Headcanons: Erwin Smith (Modern AU)
Tumblr media
I see Erwin being the CEO of some big, super progressive company. He would be a very powerful and respected man whom many will look up to as an inspiration. His dedication to helping the greater good will have won the hearts of thousands of people worldwide, including their belief in him, their services and overall support.
Levi, Eld, and Gunther would also be higher ups working alongside Erwin and his company, thus earning lots of respect from their employees and other companies worldwide.
Erwin would be totally humble about his position in the world and act as if he's just another regular person. Whenever he goes out, he assures his bodyguards that he doesn't need protection, that he can handle himself and will be just fine. His bodyguards will become anxious and urge him to at least take one of them with him, but Erwin will decline. His answer would always be that having a group of men dressed in black surround him will only bring more attention to him, which he doesn't need.
"But Sir."
"Let the bastard go out by himself. He's a big boy. Now make yourselves useful and go fetch me a cup of tea."
"Yes, Mr. Ackerman!"
Erwin would be the type to take long walks alone just to clear his mind and think. Being the CEO of a growing and prosperous company can be exhausting both mentally and physically, so Erwin tries not to let himself get too stressed out by taking his lunch break somewhere outside the office or after hours he will treat himself to a nice dinner or movie, or meet up with the guys (sometimes including Hange and Moblit) at the bar.
Erwin would totally fall for a sweet middle class person. He would probably spot them in the same cafe he was at. He would catch them laughing and talking with their friends at a secluded table area of the cafe, and when the person just so happens to look up and lock eyes with him, it will be love at first sight.
The person's friends will take notice at them constantly eyeing Erwin from afar, and are shocked when they realize who he is.
"That's Erwin fucking Smith. Sorry love, but you've got no chance."
"Yeah, you're probably right. What was I thinking?”
Erwin will stay put and wait for an appropriate time to approach them. When he sees the friends leaving, that's when he would go in and make his move.
He will introduce himself to the person, which they will shake his hand and tell him that they already know who he is. Erwin isn't surprised though. He brushes it off and asks to know their name, which they tell him. From there they began to converse and get to know each other, exchanging numbers and making plans to meet again.
His crush will have their head in the clouds as they cannot believe that someone so powerful would be interested in a regular person like themselves. They will often feel conflicted and doubt themselves a lot, but Erwin always, always, always reminds them, that he likes them for them. He's not trying to use them in any way shape or form, he genuinely finds them beautiful and interesting and will continue to want to spend time with them.
Erwin would be the type to take them out on super fancy dates. He won't know any other way of doing it because he's use to having money, so it's a regular thing for him. His crush, however, will eventually express that they don't have to be taken out to fancy places to have a good time.
They will start to introduce him to more fun dates like going to the zoo, or the museum, or even a theme park, all of which will make Erwin uncomfortable at first, but after a while he will start to enjoy. He just won't be use to having so much fun because of his busy life as a businessman and he will be overjoyed to see how much life this new person brings him. It will be one night when he and his crush are walking alongside a peaceful area of the city that he stops them and asks them to be his, which they agree to by kissing him.
Because Erwin will be such a well-known man, his s/o will also have to get use to the fact that everyone will be in their face half the time. They will date for two years until Erwin decides that they are the one for him and proposes. He will make sure his s/o has the wedding of their dreams and covers all of the costs so that their parents won't have to worry about anything. Their honeymoon will take place somewhere different like Australia, Dubai, or Greece.
Erwin would be such a bomb ass husband. I'm talkin waking up to gourmet breakfasts, back massages, being spoiled to death by his time, not money. He and his s/o know how important his job is to him and a lot of people, but even he will find time to spend with his s/o. He will care for them deeply, always checking to sure they are okay.
They will often have long talks accompanied with a glass of red wine at night before bed. Their talks will range from how their days went, to what their plans will be for the upcoming weekend, to what Bonnie found out about her husband's best friend's brother cheating on his wife with the lady down the street from them.
Whenever he starts to get stressed out from the loads of work he has to do, his s/o will encourage him to take a break and come to bed. Most of the time he won't, because he doesn't want to get behind on his work and it start to pile up on him, but all it takes is for his s/o to shimmy their way into his lap, wrap their arms around his neck, and feather kisses against his neck for him to drop what he's doing and go to bed, but not just to sleep if you know what I mean. ;)
Arguments will be typical but are always solved immediately. Erwin will not hesitate to apologize if he knows he is in the wrong and vice versa. He refuses to let his s/o go to sleep at night sad and unhappy.
Jealousy? Psh. It's Erwin fucking Smith. Who else better would his s/o ask for? Erwin never gets jealous with his s/o. It is only when someone else decides to get disrespectful and flirt with Erwin's spouse that Erwin will give them one and only one warning before they run away in fear of what they know he can do. Everyone knows who Erwin and his spouse are so for someone to blatantly try to flirt with his spouse will totally piss Erwin off.
"Look at my spouse again that way and I'll make sure you wake up jobless tomorrow morning."
"I'm flattered that you find my spouse so lovely, but wouldn't it be a shame if you didn't get that promotion you've been working so hard on for years now?" *Takes sip of wine*
"Isn't Mr. Ackerman your superior? Maybe I should have a few words with him about your behavior towards my spouse. I'm sure he'll know what to do about that."
PDA is limited strictly to handholding. During more casual settings like a dinner, Erwin will place his arm around his s/o's waist. As a well-known business owner, it is important that Erwin remain professional while in public and on the job (with the exception of fun dates his s/o likes to take him on). If alone in his office, he and his s/o will sometimes get a little frisky during lunch hour.

Things to see and do in Kenya
Tumblr media
Things to see and do in Kenya
Climb Mount Kenya At 4,986m (16,358ft) above sea level, this extinct volcano is the second-highest mountain in Africa. The Mountain Club of Kenya runs mountain huts and publishes guides for climbers. Even if you don't climb to the upper slopes, it is worth spending time on the forested lower slopes below the ice-capped peak, where interesting wildlife abounds. Climb Mount Longonot This distinctive volcano, which last erupted in the 1860s, rises dramatically above the Rift Valley floor, and its slopes can be ascended in around 90 minutes. Allow another hour for the descent, and 3-4 hours if you want to walk around the rim of the perfect volcanic crater. Day trip to Nairobi National Park Nairobi National Park, only 8km (5 miles) from the city centre, is Kenya's oldest national park. Today, it still looks much as it did in the early photographs – wild, undulating pasture – and supports most of East Africa’s best known wildlife, including lion, rhino, giraffe, buffalo and zebra (but not elephant). Experience the magic of the Masai Mara Kenya's most popular game park is named after the Maasai tribe, who migrated south from the Nile Valley in the 17th century. A northern extension to Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains, it is one of the best places in Africa for seeing lion, cheetah and leopard, but is most famous for the annual wildebeest migration and dramatic crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara River. Explore Kenya’s coral coast Visitors can choose between scuba-diving, snorkelling, sailing, water-skiing, swimming or surfing along Kenya's coral coast. The most popular resorts near Mombasa include Bamburi, Kikambala, Kilifi, Malindi, Nyali and the 10km- (6-mile) long, dazzlingly white Diani Beach. Another good base for watersports is the Rift Valley lake of Naivasha, about 1.5 hours drive from Nairobi. Explore Lamu Town Set on a picturesque offshore island close to the Somali border, Lamu is a charming old Swahili city and UNESCO World Heritage Site with many historic mosques and fine old Arab houses replete with impressive carved wooden doors. Highlights of the town include the Lamu Museum, the Swahili House Museum and the Fortress. Go twitching in Kakamega Forest The only rainforest in Kenya, this lovely spot near the Ugandan border is arguably the prime birdwatching site in the country, thanks to the presence of several dozen forest species found nowhere else in the country. For non-birders, the shady forest paths and plentiful monkeys still offer lots of charm. Go wild at Lake Nakuru National Park Boasting a dramatic setting in the Rift Valley, this park is dominated by a lake whose edges are frequently home to hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos. It is also one of Kenya's best rhino sanctuaries, supporting high concentrations of both black and white rhino, and you may spot a leopard in the giant yellowwood acacia trees. Help save the elephants at Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Watch baby elephants play at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, an important sanctuary where orphaned elephants are hand-reared before being released back into the wild. Bordering Nairobi National Park, the sanctuary is also home to several orphaned rhinos, and is an important player in the fight against poaching. Jump aboard a dhow Spend an evening afloat on a romantic dhow (traditional Arab sailing boat), feasting on delicious seafood and watching the moon rise over Mombasa's old harbour. Lunchtime or dinner cruises are available on these beautiful floating restaurants, and some even have space for dancing on the deck. Marvel at Mombasa Enjoy this coastal city's Swahili flavour in the Old Town, with its narrow, crowded streets; watch the sailing dhows in the Old Harbour and catch the sound and light show at Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and is now a museum. Pay a visit to Laikipia Plateau Discover a recent conservation success where former farmland has been opened up as game sanctuaries and stocked with big game including the Big Five: elephant, buffalo, lion, rhino and leopard. The old farmsteads here have been converted into delightful, luxurious accommodations. This vast wilderness area remains largely underexplored by tourists. Quaff high tea at Elsamere Situated on the shores of Lake Naivasha, the former home of Joy Adamson (of Born Free fame) is now a museum and conservation research centre. Set in grounds teeming with birds – and home to a group of handsome colobus monkeys – Elsamere also serves excellent high tea. Shop until you drop in Mombasa Biashara Street is a great place to buy traditional kikoy and khanga clothing. Makupa Market, off Mwembe Tayari, is the main city market. Serious souvenir shoppers should also head for the Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Village, where disabled men and women produce high-quality leatherwork, jewellery and other crafts. Stay a night at Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary Situated a short distance from the main highway between Nairobi and Mombasa, this small private sanctuary bordering the vast Tsavo National Park doubles as a luxury hotel and well-positioned hide, overlooking a salt lick and a waterhole that frequently attracts aggregations of a hundred or more elephants. Step into the land of giants at Amboseli National Park The 392sq km (151sq mile) Amboseli National Park lies at the base of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Wildlife includes lion, cheetah, wildebeest, hippo and gazelle, but the park is most famous for the large herds of elephant attracted by the perennial swamps. Bird-watching is popular, and visitors can learn about the local Maasai people through homestead visits. Take the road less travelled to Lake Turkana In the barren northern reaches of Kenya, Lake Turkana is a strange and beautiful oasis, known to locals as the Jade Sea due to its size and striking colour. The lake provides great fishing, while its islands have healthy crocodile and hippo populations. The semi-nomadic Turkana tribe are just as interesting as the lake itself. Take to the skies in a hot air balloon Float over great herds of game in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Hour-long excursions set off at dawn and end with champagne breakfasts. Almost all the lodges in the reserve offer this experience, which gives ballooners the chance to see the wildebeest migration from the air between July and September. Tour Nairobi's museums Browse the ethnographic and archaeological exhibits of the National Museum, which lies within walking distance of the city centre. And then head out to the suburban Karen Blixen Museum, which occupies the farmhouse made famous by the nominal author's book, Out of Africa. The Nairobi Railway Museum also covers an important chapter of the city’s history. 美国媒体报道:香港举行数绘摄影之父傅文俊的展览
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
《他心通》No.7 (2009-2011)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
HONG KONG HOSTS FU WENJUN EXHIBIT, FATHER OF DIGITAL PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Susan Morgan
Bleeding black ink, swirls on and off the borders of the page. In some instances, the running ink is rain, or dreams, or wind. In some instances, the smeared and smudged ink, muddled with rich colored paints, are concepts of perception, identity and emotions. The works of Fu Wenjun lives in shadow boxes, usually containing 9 square sheets, placed three by three only an inch and half away from the wall. That is enough space to create transcendence over space and the eye's expectations. His art floats. It is Photography redefined. It is digital photography revolutionized. Wherever your mind thinks the image should end, his work defies you. This is Wenjun's style. This is Digital Pictorial Photography.
Leading the way as one of the most innovative artists in China's contemporary art scene, Wenjun's work has shown in New York, Paris, Barcelona, Miami, Milan and Dubai. And this is not a full recounting. He is a darling of the Chinese Contemporary art market. His work is collected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and Société Nationale des Beaux Arts of France. He is also in countless museums throughout Asia, Africa, and the US.
His modern and abstract art fits effortlessly, like a glove, into the art scene emerging in China, but he comes from a rather unexpected place.
Fu Wenjun was born in Chongqing, China during a time of peace in a country in the process of healing from the 2nd Sino-Japanese war. During these formative years, Chongqing was becoming one of the four main municipalities under China's central government alongside Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. He went to Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.
His first main exhibit was "Echo" in 2009. The collection was made up of haunting abstract paintings of abandoned buildings accompanied by the Chinese National Emblem creating a juxtaposition between the economic waste and spending of an authoritarian government and the prosperity promised in industrialization. From his very first exhibit, it was very clear he was fearless in his ability to confront modern culture's hypocrisies.
In 2010 - 2011 he combined digital photography with montage art design. In "Thought Reading" his process included taking radiology x-rays of the human skull and replacing the brain space with Buddhist sculptures. In 2012, he followed with his next exhibition, "Pick at Random." This time he experimented with mixing art languages and creating new images combining iconic cultural symbols. This was a playful process, but the resulting works questioned cultural identities and our perception of the "self." And there is no slowing down for Fu Wenjun. His work keeps coming. He is prolific and continues to push the intersectionality of art, painting, inking, sculpture and digital photography.
His work has become more and more entangled with cultural influence and criticism. The topic that most influences his work is his connection to travel.
"I like travelling and travel a lot. Every journey is an experience, a process of meeting something new, something different. What's more important, it's a process of understanding more about myself and of rethinking more profoundly of what I have experienced up ‘til now."
Some of his best works are at The University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong in his newest exhibit "Digital Brush: The Photographic Process of Fu Wenjun." Some of the works featured are "Soft Hands," "Fresh Rain in the Mountain," "East Wind Blew Again Last Night" and "Dancing Notes." All four are masterpieces worthy of an afternoon studying the master's process and recontextualizing your definitions of Photography and Art.
But he is far from done exploring these ideas. In his new works, he takes on more structural forms. In one of his new series, "Ask Tea" Wenjun explains that the works "display the objects in the environment of an old-style Chinese teahouse, and aesthetically explores a composition of geometric shapes."
Meanwhile his work with culture continues in his new "F1" series. He told 72 Dragons Media that "the works are thematic portraits with ink painting, line drawing and light color in contrast to original photos, with the attempt of encouraging viewers to ask and think the facts behind the images in front of them. [The Inspiration] coming from my last year's visit to F1 Abu Dhabi race."
It is clear that his newer works grow richer with context to his own Chongqing upbringing and the influence he has met with the outside world. His work, much like the ink that appears to bleed from the canvas, is sometimes blending and blurring with its surroundings and other times standing in sharp contrast to them.
This is what has Wenjun so excited about showing in Hong Kong.
"My work is a place where the spirit of Chinese traditional culture encounters the photographic art that keeps innovating. Hong Kong is a city [where] the Eastern and the Western culture meet and blend…" For this reason alone, there is no better place to exhibit his work and to admire it.
The exhibit is showing at the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong and will run until February 22, 2019.

i promise you it’s taken me two weeks to do this. @rebellesixx
Tumblr media
A tux would have been more fitting but Aubrey could care less. Twelve hours without sleep would make anybody not care. Especially if all today was going to be about was being flashy and eating a meal that cost more than a small island in the Caribbean. Ditzy chicks littered the restaurant, blondes of all types, from business owners to the ones selling teas on instagram. Some exotics followed suit, most just came with their sugar daddies though.
Bright lights were everywhere. Aubrey scrunched up his face; a headache was forming. He knew he shouldn’t have drunk two glasses of wine this early in the day. But he wasn’t ordering nor paying for anything here. The food was shitty—but the company sitting across from him wasn’t half as bad.
Robyn was the top of her tier. A woman beyond her years and more elegant than the ones she surrounded herself with. Today she dressed up; Aubrey could have cared less though. Her Chanel Spring 2014 Couture dress still fit her nicely; the lilac color looked bright against her skin. He still remembered when he got it for her because she wouldn’t stop complaining about it.
“You’re not going to eat?”
Aubrey saw her mouth moving, he heard her too. The wine was making him feel warm and nice. He could feel it rushing through his bloodstream into the bits of him that needed desperately to wake up.
Shaking his head, he replied, “I’ll probably just get it to-go.”
The smell of his steak wafted under his nose and the aroma made him want to vomit. He wasn’t going to take anything to-go, what he was going to do was go home and attempt to get some peace and quiet.
“To-go,” she asked, “usually you try to eat everything in here, if not buy it all before we leave.”
Aubrey could feel his irritation rising. Just the look at the red wine sloshing around in her glass before she brought it up to her lips made him grow into this beast that he was growing more accustomed to being as each day passed.
It was truly taking a toll on him.
“Haven’t been hungry much, ya’ know? Been a busy man,” he stated.
“I do believe,” she cleared her throat, “that a busy man wouldn’t have time for lunch, now would he?”
“Sometimes that busy man has his exceptions,” said Aubrey. “It all depends.”
Robyn put her glass down and picked up her knife and fork. Whenever they came here she ordered the same thing for the both of them: rare, charred on one side with a side of garlic roasted potatoes.
Cutting into her steak, she flipped her hair over shoulder and asked, “Depends?”
“If I was busy with something out farther, than this wouldn’t have happened.”
“You mean if I hadn’t bribed you into coming,” she paused, putting a piece of pink meat into her mouth. “You’d lie to me and tell me you were busy?”
“Pussy isn’t a bribe if I could have gotten it whenever I wanted to,” Aubrey’s blank expression didn’t match his words. He slouched in his seat. “Especially if I didn’t want it in the first place.”
Robyn blinked at him. Her cutting motion stopping before she looked around them to see if anybody heard what he said. “Can you keep your voice down? I don’t know what’s gotten into you this past couple of days but you need to chill out.”
“Robyn,” Aubrey said, “I’m going home.”
Aubrey decided to just leave a tip. He pushed his chair back, stood up and reached into his pants pocket. It was a twenty, the waitress was a good one and he felt like she deserved it. Throwing it on the table, he grabbed his jacket and started to put it on.
“Aubrey,” Robyn whispered, cautiously looking around. “Sit back down.”
“No,” he answered, slipping into the rest of his jacket. Walking around the small table, he bent down and kissed the top of her head, muttering, “Don’t call me unless it’s important.”
And he knew she would call him anyway. Sending him drunken texts and emails of how he ruined what they had and so on, so forth. Whiskey would soon be her choice of drink if he really knew her like he thought he did; he could envision it spilling on her mint green night gown as she slid down the wall of her loft with tear stained cheeks.
It was never supposed to end like this, he thought.
Tony was parked on the corner of the street where the restaurant was across. Climbing inside through the back seat, Aubrey patted his shoulder and pointed east.
“Past the deli on third,” he pointed, “make the right when you see the complex.”
Tony nodded and started the car.
The ride there wasn’t one he wanted to endure. Every few minutes his eyelids would droop and right before he could drift into a slumber, his phone would buzz or ring with a vengeance. His mother constantly texted him, he learned to accept her wanting to know his whereabouts as common motherly love. Everybody else just got on his nerves, so he ignored them and focused on the emails he kept getting.
No, Don I do not want to fly out to Dubai again, he thought as he deleted it from his inbox. Most were the same people who wanted him to send them things or help them out with exporting their product. If anything I’m going to sleep and I better wake up to silence, he thought. And if I even have to look at another shipment order… Lord have mercy. His day wasn’t even over and here he was daydreaming about the nap he might never get.
“Boss,” Aubrey picked his head up and saw Tony had stopped driving.
Aubrey patted his shoulder. “Thanks,” he climbed out and shut the door. Seconds later Tony pulled off and it made Aubrey re-consider his decision.
The industrial building was once a booming business. Everyone who lived by it knew it always had business and was filled with just about anything you could ask for.
Here it was just an empty building used for the evil of all things pure and holy to the ones on the outside looking in.
“Hey boss man!”
The first initial steps inside were filled with five minute greetings and conversations that didn’t hold his attention. Normally he was engaged and polite—today just wasn’t his day. Neither was last week or the week before that. Something had been bothering him, but he couldn’t even put a finger on the true cause.
If anything it’s Robyn and her calling my phone every damn night, he thought. The thought of her probably drunk somewhere made him tighten up. It made him want to call her and check up on her but that was something he knew would bring them both back to square one—or the restaurant per usual.
“My man,” Chubb’s called, dapping Aubrey before pulling him into a quick hug. “You been good?”
“As good as good gets,” he replied, “anything been going around yet?”
“Naaah today been a slow one, mad shipment orders but no actual boxes been through.”
Not something unusual to hear. Especially in the middle of the week—it was just something that Aubrey didn’t want to hear.
He slid his hand down his face with a groan. Coughing, he watched his breath float in the air for a second before a crashing sound boomed from behind him.
“Sorry boss!”
Chubb’s looked at the annoyed expression on Aubrey’s face and emitted into laughter. “You havin’ a rough day?”
Aubrey shot him a look. “A fucking understatement.”
“Don’t you gotta go off to work too?”
It obviously flew over his head. Sometimes he’d get into such a foggy state that he’d forget he was still leading an average life. He’d get so stuck in his ways of night life and trafficking that it only would take a few words to bring him back down to the life he used to enjoy.
“Around three, Kayden said I’d only work the front,” he said. “It’s only Thursday so I shouldn’t have to do much.”
Chump change, he thought. All it truly did was give him a chance to keep the cops from kicking in his door. He’d seen all the notorious, most infamous dealers get socked because they wanted to walk around with millions and have five grand rolling into their bank accounts every six seconds like it was normal. That wasn’t going to be him, not if he could help it. As far as he was concerned—he was never letting that happen to him.
Only time he got caught was when he first started. Some dude he would sell to got mad because he wouldn’t give him anything. Debt was bitch and if Aubrey had to dish it out then so be it.
Not even a week in, he got busted at his cousin’s for the intent to sell. That threw him out of whack for a couple of months. The feeling of fear every time you turned down a corner was real. Just the look from his peers when he would come around was enough for him to never get caught up like that again.
He was on to bigger and better things.
“You headin’ up to the complex,” Chubb’s asked, rubbing his hands together.
Aubrey nodded, licking his lips he dabbed his friend and nodded off to the workers around them. Conversations could wait—for now he just wanted to sleep.
Moments like these are the reason why Aubrey hides.
Water cascaded down his back. His curls were drenched with soap that slid down the sides of his face as he inhaled the aromas he created. Mahogany infused scents floated all around him as he washed himself. Aaliyah’s soft voice sounded godly against the rain outside his window.
This bathroom was different than his sanctuary.
Black covered the walls while burgundy tiles and towels littered it. Black sink, tub, counters—marbled and initialed with the infamous trademark. Candles still sat around, vanilla scented and the same ol’ rose petals; just in a mason jar on the counter with a washcloth covering it. Steam hung in the room, casting over the mirror and revealing secret messages written on it over time. You better open your mind, you better read between the lines—things he’s thought about continuously. But the lines blur and he can only just go on instinct.
His day was almost over. He was trying not to think about it though; it would only make him more irritable. He leaned his head against the tiles next to him. Aaliyah’s lyrics made him feel smaller than what he was and he couldn’t help but let his emotions get the best of him. For a moment, he considered wiping his tears and rinsing off due to this very moment—he decided against it. Everything surrounding him had him worrying. He worried that his life might be snatched away from him.
He was concerned with his dealings. The people he came in contact with always made him reconsider and that was bad being in the business that he was in. He felt that if he wasn’t sure, he shouldn’t give them chance, but as of lately his mindset has been, ‘fuck it’, and gave out free handouts like it was going out of style. Niggas didn’t care if I died or not, as long as I’m gone the game is unbeatable, he thought. I don’t have to put fear in these niggas because I’ve done it enough; I just wonder when I can stop. Only thing that keeps me going is the nerve-racking fear of having to switch over into a lifestyle that I can’t maintain. I wasn’t able to maintain it prior. Never will be, and he thought of ways of to leave, but none of them seemed to make sense.
Take the money you have saved up. Go to the states and start out small.
Nah, they won’t last long because you got connections and end up using them all.
Ask Natalia if she wants a roommate—Texas ain’t that small and plus, she’s too dumb to say no.
Or, just pack up and go away. Don’t even think about it—just go and pray that God keeps on sending blessings.
Either way you’re fucked, he thought. Forty will have a cow. God forbid if anyone even let him breathe long enough to escape.
He got out of the shower. The intense smell of his Giorgio Armani body wash made his nose burn as he wrapped his waist with a towel and sauntered to his room. It was like it floated all around him, the feeling of being trapped inside his own walls didn’t help it returning irritation.
“Drake.”
He turned his head at the voice but never turned around. Mumbling a, “yeah”, he dropped his towel and walked over to his closet.
“You want lunch,” she asked. Dainty and soft, her voice didn’t match her looks. Five foot three; Aubrey basically towered over her whenever they were together. She had a couple of freckles on her face paired with the two beauty marks she had on her cheek. Wild, light brown curls were always all over her face and seemed to match her tawny, beige skin. Her full figure is what caught him; wide hips with a behind that seemed blessed paired along with breast that he could never tear his eyes way from.
“Not in the mood.” Nadia’s hand crept up his back, making him jump at the contact. He looked down at her and gave a gentle smile—he knew she meant no wrong.
“You want me to save you some? I made enough if you wanna take some to work with you,” she offered, placing a kiss on his back as he pulled on a pair of jeans. “It’s nothing to spicy either, I made sure,” she looked up at him as he put on a sweater.
“Yeah,” he mumbled as he bent over her. “Gimme a kiss, I ain’t gon’ see you for a while—I’ma miss you,” he told her, a smirk etched on his lips.
“I’ll miss you even more,” she replied, giving him a peck before stepping back and walking out of his closet. “Don’t forget to text me,” she added, turning around on her heels and pointing at him tauntingly.
“I won’t,” said Aubrey.
I’ma forget, he thought. He usually did, but those weren’t his intentions. Aubrey wasn’t a man of many words, especially when texting. Only time he really did text was when Robyn was sober enough to tell her A’s from her D’s.
Hours had passed between him riding from the city into what he called home. The streets were still filled with the same guys who he grew up with, and Aubrey felt a sense of tranquility. From what he saw, today was a slow day and that meant everything was calming down for him. “A moment from all the stress—life is fucking me,” Aubrey mumbled as he collected his things from the passenger seat before he got out and started his walk to the building.
Aubrey glanced down and sighed. He smoothed out his sweater and took in a deep breath before entering through the back door. Dimly lit and noisy—he felt like his old self again as he strolled through. Mold and wet plaster was the smell that filled the four story building. No matter the floor; you smelt it. Water dripping from busted pipes with pressured air coming from the holes was like a choir to anyone who worked here.
It eased Aubrey’s mind.
“Drake,” he turned a corner and looked around for the culprit who said his name.
At the end of the hallway was the entrance. Two doors sat there, one for entry and the other for deliveries—metal, one window and two metal bars to pull them open. The second was a regular glass door with a neon open sign flashing on it.
To the left is where it looked like that scene from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when they were in the Hall of Prophecies. Large, metal shelves filled up to the top with boxes filled the first floor. Walking down one of the aisle was like asking for a death wish. The amount of boxes you had to count and put in alphabetical order was asking for your short term memory to relapse. Regardless, Aubrey and his fellow work friends got it done in a timely matter.
“Yeah man,” he walked up to the culprit, Donnie, and dapped him up. “How you been?”
Donnie was a junior in college with a baby. Tall, a curly fade to match his beard, and the impulse to roast anybody on sight. He was a good guy, never one to really complain or get in the way of any of the other guys.
“Shiiiddd Kayden got me workin’ like a slave,” he told him. “Had my dark ass in the way back talkin’ ‘bout some, ‘I can’t see you on the camera’s, you might wanna come back to the front’—nigga! I couldn’t see myself so I know you ain’t see me!”
Doubled over in laughter, Aubrey slightly bent over and let out a hearty cackle.
“Man,” Donnie sucked his teeth and rolled his eyes. “Got me fucked up and my shift ain’t eem’ over.”
“You know Kayden always being an asshole,” Aubrey replied, wiping at his eyes.
Donnie nodded. “Mans had me lifting boxes that weren’t eem’ in my weight class yo.”
Donnie was always making somebody laugh. Aubrey liked him, his vibe was clean and good natured—something Aubrey hadn’t felt in awhile.
The two continued talking as they walked down an aisle that lead to their working stations. Donnie dealt with customer service and shipping; a job that meant lots of communication. Aubrey chose the easy way out, especially today. Working with the front was easier than the rest because all he had to do was count boxes, and give a total number of the shipments that came in. No talking was had and he got to go home earlier which meant he had enough time to prep himself for his night.
Tired of having to prep myself, he thought.
“Ay, you heard ‘bout that shoot out up on Terrance this weekend?”
Aubrey felt his chest collapse. He started coughing because of the heavy feeling.
“Ay,” Donnie stopped next to him, patting his back. “Big man, you good?”
Aubrey nodded, clearing his throat with a few pats to his chest. “Yeah, yeah I’m good. But, uh, what did you hear?”
“Maaaaan! Everybody was like, ‘oh a big group of niggas in like five SUV’s pulled up and just started shootin’ up the block’,” he relied, mimicking the person he must’ve heard it from. “Mad niggas was talkin’ ‘bout how the whole block got sprayed and then it was over just like,” he snapped his fingers and gave Aubrey a childlike smile. “That.”
Upon entering the work station, Aubrey had just nodded and muttered a, “damn, that’s crazy.” But he was more interested in how that had even got around that fast.
Last weekend was a blur. Aubrey had a couple of drinks and felt that he needed to prove to a fellow rival that he should watch his back. In doing that, he rounded up his team, plus the people he had in his inner circle to about five/six trucks and they all headed up there. If he would’ve known his reckless behavior was going to be town wide news, he would’ve just dealt with a hangover.
“I know, right,” Donnie replied. “But don’t nobody know who bold enough to show up on Donileius block like that, ya’ know?”
Aubrey wanted to laugh so bad it was terrible. He wanted to double over in tears and shout to the top of his lungs, that he, Aubrey, had the balls to show up on his block with no fucks given. He wanted Donnie to know he was unstoppable and that even if he got in his way, he wouldn’t hesitate.
Instead, he said, “True, sounds wild.”
From then on work got started. Aubrey would sometimes find himself motionless in the aftermath of his thoughts as he worked. Outwardly, he looked content, counting aloud and writing down the information on spreadsheets while having a meaningless conversation with whoever brought the shipments in. When he eyes lifted to the next person, a petite woman was approaching him, and he recognized the man walking behind her. Average in height but upon further inspection, pretty in presence, with Long-silky hair, and skin like warm sepia made most of the men bask in her glory. Kayden’s niece. Unlike Kayden, she had changed.
“Well if it isn’t the man himself,” Kayden began his greeting as he reached an arm over Aubrey’s pedestal and dapped him up.
“Hello, Drake,” Kayden’s niece smiled, and his brown eyes narrowed at her.
“You haven’t met my niece,” Kayden uttered in surprise, and Aubrey forced a respectful smile that he only used when he was clueless to what was going on. He stepped around his pedestal and stood next to Kayden, positioning him right in front of his niece.
“I’m Aylin,” she said quickly.
Sticking his hand out, Aubrey nodded and replied, “Drake.” They shook hands, awkwardly, before pulling them away.
“Now you two know each other. That’s fantastic,” Kayden declared. “So if you see her here more than me, it’s all good and dandy. Which also means, you can trust her as well as you do me.”
“With that being said, I’ve been thinking about expanding the business and hiring more people. To maintain the ‘home-like’ feeling of our business, because the people of the city come here more than they do any other industrial company including the tri-cities and outermost counties around us,” he explained ardently as he turned to Aubrey, moving is hands in trying to inform.
“In that, I wanted to move you upstate where the second installment would be, only if you be comfortable with that. Aylin saw your spreadsheets and got to see you work last week and seemed to pick up on your craft—so no problem with replacing you here. Now that you’ve met her, and can get familiar with her, it would be great if you could show her the ropes. Then if you feel comfortable with her doing this, we can send you upstate and let you manage that area up there. This is a deal meant to happen,” he added hopefully. Aubrey stuck his hand in his pocket, and brought his other hand to smooth down his beard.
“You want me to go upstate to manage a whole area,” he repeated. “My living situations, I could only—“
“That’s where I come in,” Aylin chimed in. “In being here, we would meet here on the days we work—transportation provided, my uncle would have someone here to take you. So you just leave your car here, or we could car pool—your choice, and then someone would drive you to and from Upstate.”
“I’ll have someone from this building taking you up there, it’s all planned out,” Kayden insisted. “But you would have to take the job head on, instead of working your usual two or one night shifts; I need you for three or more days at a time.”
“I can always take those… switching up is fine with me,” Aylin could hardly suppress her nervous chuckle, and Kayden looked in between the two, wondering what he was missing.
“Let me think about it,” Aubrey eased, patting the back of Kayden’s shoulder, and nodding.
“Please, take all the time you need. Get to know Aylin as well,” Kayden persisted. “This is just the beginning; me seeking you, if you will. I’ll leave you two to get to know each other; I think Aylin can persuade you better than my old self could ever. But! Don’t think of it as doing it out of pressure. Just know that you would be gladly appreciated to us, Drake.”
Aubrey nodded, grabbing a hold of Kayden’s hand for a firm shake before excusing himself to the bathroom. The dimly lit hallway led way to a great distance between him and the exit door as he leaned his body up against the wall.
A sigh escaped his lips before he heard a door click, making him stand up straight and look that way.
“You don’t have to take the shit,” Aylin walked down to where Aubrey stood. “Declining his offer instead of making him wait for a ‘no’ is way better.”
“Seemed like you wanted me to take it,” Aubrey responded calmly, his composure to her outward statement provoking her.
“And? I can tell when someone isn’t convinced,” she asserted, taking a stance in front of him. “He only wants you up there because I need a job. He probably wouldn’t have even pitched the idea if it weren’t for me. And if anything, you could do better.”
She was started to turn around, but she stopped and her stance went back to Aubrey.
“What do you really do, huh,” she questioned eagerly. “I mean, excuse me for intruding, but for someone like you it doesn’t seem that you’d be in the industrial business.”
Aubrey began to speak, wanting to set her straight for just implying all these dumb opinions, but withdrew mid-sentence, taking a breath in, fighting the urge to do just that and more.
“The minute you walk back out there, you’re probably gonna go back to counting and sorting. But once that’s over, it’s like you turn into a different person,” she claimed, in a dreamy like voice.
“I’m only different because I intrigue you.” Aubrey said it slowly. It sounded more like a question. He wanted to twist her words and make her walk away, to make her sound like the nosy person she was seconds after prying into his world. It was the only thing that made him still feel whole at times. Being able to leave someone shook off of his bomb dropping into their conscience.
“That’s the only reason you’re trying so hard,” he added, and Aylin rolled her eyes, shrugging her shoulders childishly.
“I only try when I know something’s up. But you can continue your little act,” she retorted. “Just… don’t play this façade you have for too long, it can be damaging in the end.”
Aubrey watched her walk away, taking in a slow deep breath, letting the sound of his inhale force him to release it in a calming matter.
The clink of glasses made him nauseated.
Dim lights surrounded the island. Glasses of wines and tropical liquors sat on it in sparse positions. The taste of leftover cigars and stale pretzels sat in his mouth as he eyed the plate of pasta in front of him. Rosewater and mist of mahogany sat in the room and wavered in and out of his nose when she entered the kitchen. Her hair pulled back into a ponytail, her bangs sat in her face. Smug and dangerous, she sauntered over to Aubrey and rubbed a hand down his back.
His eyes moved from his plate to the glass of wine he had devoured. His lip imprint still on it. The soft touch of her lips nibbled on his ear lobe—his hand lay underneath him as his forearms supported his weight on the counter. Black curtains came into his view as his eyes lifted to them. The world was closed out on this part of his life; the only way she’d tolerate it.
Her other hand slid onto the counter, scooping up the torn black envelope and smacking it against the side of Aubrey’s face. He could feel her demeaning gaze upon his temples and decided to pour himself another glass.
His sudden movement caught Robyn off guard. She scoffed and shifted her weight to the left.
“I know you didn’t come over here to drink all my wine,” she noted, flipping her ponytail over her right shoulder.
“Seems that you’ve done that for me,” his demeanor was cold; as was his choice of words. He knew that because Robyn attempted to mask her hurtful expression with a light chuckle before stalking over to him again.
Her hand found a place in his curls, rustling them around. The legs Aubrey once loved to feel on tangled in his as she forced her body in between him and the counter, giving him no space to ignore her. Chest to chest, hand to hand, nose to nose—she had pinned him and was making her statement clear.
Aubrey dipped his down and captured her lips, giving her an answer. She moaned as his hands gripped her ass, picking her up and setting her on the counter. They pecked each other’s lips a few times before Aubrey placed small kisses on her neck and down between her breast. His hand reached up her back and played with her bra before getting it off. In succeeding with that, his lips instantly latched onto her nipple and sucked on it, toying with the piercing she had. Each time Aubrey grew lower and lower, her breath hitched, picking up speed and then calming down. They had always wanted this. They wanted the feeling of lust and love again and they tried to recreate it.
Placing her legs on his shoulder, Aubrey began to kiss and nibble on her thighs. Her cocoa butter lotion had engulfed him in a trace to plant his face directly where she wanted it. Upon first touch, his tongue separated her lips, allowing his lips to wrap around her clit and suck on it gingerly. Her fingers brushed against his ears softly, slowly crawling into his head of curls.
Robyn’s other hand gripped Aubrey’s that held her thigh. She squeezed it tight; his actions growing sloppier as her moans grew louder. He could feel her hips grinding against the concoction he created, only making him want to send her spiraling into the dark abyss she wanted. He wanted to channel her energy to fulfill not only her needs, but his. Using the fingers of his free hand, he slipped a digit inside as his tongue made figures on her clit.
“Fuck Aubrey,” she moaned, as Aubrey slurped under her. He had her flowing and was trying his best to keep it coming. He wanted her in a vulnerable position, just to the point of no return so he could sweep her up at the right time. Aubrey pulled away from her clit and focused on her lips, kissing them as if it was her mouth. His pace made her grow uncontrollable; her hand squeezing his even tighter. No matter how he felt about her before, he was aroused at her being aroused and in due time would show her.
Looking up at her, Aubrey grunted at the sight of her bottom lip embedded in between her teeth and her eyes rolling towards the back of her head. The vibration of his grunt sent a throaty groan from Robyn’s red lips into the room, making her hips spring to life once more. He let his lips grip onto her clit, adding another finger into walls with ease as he felt her almost reach her wits end.
“I—I‘m going to cum,” she rasped, though Aubrey was aware of it. He moved his head back some and freed his hand from her grip, licking his thumb he planted it on her clit and rubbed it rapidly.
“Fuuuck, baby,” she cursed as her legs begin to tremble and she began to pour onto Aubrey’s tongue.
He kissed his way up from her thighs, her stomach, and the nape of her neck before placing a kiss on her lips. “I’ve missed you Aubs.”
Those were the four words that always trapped him in. He knew he was never escaping them and kept them close in his heart because she was only one that would remind him.
He did become a different person, but only for the better.

Date with Nabataeans...
Finally, I could walk through the lands where legendary Nabataeans, Romans and Greeks once moved and left their marks. It was a well-planned solo trip to Jordan after gathering information from friends, online sources and tour operators. My initial plan was to travel using the public transport but had to change plans and depend on tour operators. This was due to considerations of time constraints and public transport connectivity between the places.
It was a smooth sailing on the board of FlyDubai flight FZ 5141, shall I say, from an almost empty but Dubai’s newest Al Maktoum Int’l Airport (DWC) at 22:40 Hrs on 24th May 2018 to Queen Alia Int’l Airport in Amman (Jordan). On landing at Amman at 00:55 Hrs the next day I had a smooth passage through the immigration process including baggage collection which took less than 10 minutes; as expected the representative of tour operator facilitated this.
Jordan offers visa on arrival for a fee for the Indian passport holders. It would be better to buy a Jordan Pass online couple of days before the trip as it covers visa fee and entry fee to many sites. Details are at http://www.visitjordan.com. Money matters: If you do not have any major purchase plans carrying about 500 Jordanian Dinars in cash would be sufficient for a 4 days’ trip provided the breakfast is covered with the lodging. I was on a tight budget and was cautious while spending. If you are travelling through/from Dubai, try to exchange currency at Dubai Duty-Free owned outlet. They do not charge commission/service charges and also offer best rates (1 JD = 1.44 USD, 5.17 AED, 94.10 INR - approx).
Mobile / Internet Connectivity: You can pick up a SIM card from the airport. There are few outlets in arrival and departure areas of the airport. I would suggest a connection from Zain since they have wide coverage and also has hotspots in many tourist areas. I spent 6 JD for the SIM card and 10 JD for a package with 10 GB data with unlimited calls. Also, there are many places you can connect with free WIFI, if you are not very concerned about data security.
My guide-cum-driver Mohammad was waiting for me at one of the pickup bays. Mohammad turned out to be very friendly English speaking resourceful person with good knowledge about the history of Jordan and the region.
From the airport, we headed to Petra straight through the desert highway. We have covered the distance of about 210 km from Amman to my hotel in Wadi Musa in 4 hrs with a prayer and tea break in Hasa. My accommodation was arranged in Amra Palace Int’l Hotel in Wadi Musa (means Valley of Moses in English). Most of the economical hotels are located in Wadi Musa area. There are few hotels like Petra Guest House, Mövenpick are located near to the Petra World Heritage site entrance. After completing the check-in formalities went to the room and had a nap for 3 hrs. Important: Be prepared to walk and climb a lot in Petra or need to depend on the ride on horse / donkey / camel back or horse carriages. Remember, it is a desert so keep hydrating yourself.
Day 1 (Friday 25-May-2018): Petra World Heritage Site. Around 8:30 I was picked up my tour guide just after the breakfast which was included in the room plan and we proceeded straight to the Petra World Heritage site visitor Centre to get the tickets issued. My travel operators had arranged a Jordan Pass for me. Hence the entry for a day was already covered in the pass. I had to pay 5 JD to add a day’s additional entry. If you wish to spend two days in Petra, better inform the counter while buying the ticket as they charge a combined fee of 55 JD. Entry fee for a single day is 50 JD and if you buy a ticket on each day, it will cost you 100 JD. If you are a history enthusiast Petra will never disappoint you. I feel one need to have minimum of 5 days and lots of energy to explore Petra. I had to cut short my visit within one and half days due to time constraints.
After verification process (physical security check and baggage check) you are allowed to explore Petra. A 2 hr guided tour was part of my package and my guide took charge from here.
The half a kilometre distance from the Visitor Centre to Bab Al-Siq, the entrance of The Siq i.e. the narrow way to the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, you can either walk or ride horse / donkey or in a horse cart. The fee for horse ride is included in your ticket but the handler expects some tip. You will see Obelisk Tomb and many cave type constructions on both sides of the way to the Bab Al-Siq. Just before entering to the Siq, you will see a tunnel on the right-hand side. This was constructed by the Nabataeans to ensure safe flow and storage of stormwater.
You need to walk a bit more than 2 kms through the Siq to reach Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) - one of the most attractive structures in Petra. You can hire a cart, horse or donkey to cover this distance. While walking through the Siq, you will come across many remainings of Nabataean architecture including idols and temples they worshiped. There used to be waterways on each side of the rocky walls – right side, covered pipes for drinking water and the left side is an open small canal for irrigation purpose. My guide for Petra exploration had left at this point as his service was for about 2 hrs. Though he had offered me further service at 60 JD per day, I preferred to go on my own.
I walked upto Al-Deir Monastery, which is about 3.5 km away from the Treasury. On both sides of the path – King’s Way, you will see places such as Nabataeans Theatre, Um Tomb, Al-Batra, Qaser Al-Bint, Petra Museum, some of them involves bit of climbing. Also, you can explore many sites like The Renaissance Tomb, The Garden Temple, Lion’s Monument, The Great Temple, and many places if you like to explore. You need to do climbing for about 2 km through the cliffs to reach Ad-Deir Monastery from the plains. All these buildings are carved out of sandstones by Nabataeans except few constructions by Roman Empire. There are only few small trees and bushes in entire area as it is a desert. I’ve learned that only 30 - 40% of the Petra is unearthed so far and excavation is still progressing with assistance from UNESCO. I finished 1st day’s exploration and returned back to the hotel by late afternoon. Spent some relaxing time in Jacuzzi and felt fresh and all muscle pain gone. Had an early dinner and slept since I haven’t slept well in previous night in transit. I have paid 12 JD for the dinner as it was not included in my room rent. It was buffet dinner with fish curry, sausages, mutton curry, a variety of salads, pickles, hummus (bread spread), garlic paste, with rice, kuboos (Arabic bread) and desserts – cakes, fruits, Kanafah (Arabic sweet) + sugar syrup and ice cream.
Day 2: (Saturday 26-May-2018):
I got ready early in the morning and finished my breakfast. The hotel manager offered me the breakfast though the 2nd breakfast was not included in my room plan. It was a rich breakfast, same as the previous day, with Kuboos with spreads - hummus, garlic paste & lebaneh, boiled eggs, varieties of bread, jam, cheese, butter, fruit & vegetable salads, green & black olives, cornflakes, milk, tea, coffee and juices.
My travel guide cum driver dropped me at the Visitor Centre at 8:30 am. This day, I visited Royal Tombs, Ridge church and Byzantine Church and explored more around the Treasury my own.
There are lots of eateries, WiFi hotspots, shops selling souvenirs. Pay and use Bio-toilets are available on both sides of the way and also around the historical spots. The horse/donkey/camel handlers (most of them are teenagers) will keep coming to you offering a ride. However, I observed that they are decent in dealings. But better to negotiate before using their service if you are money conscious. The thing I found uneasy was the flies. They are everywhere, especially around the horses, donkeys and camels. I assume this is due to pile up of horse/donkey/camel dung.
To be continued…
