Chronicles of Mama Okoye and Riri! V

It's a Girl!

Warnings: Brief and minor allusion to abortion.

Okoye never thought herself to be easily frightened. Its been like that ever since she was young. When the bigger kids tried to intimidate her, she never stood down. When she was tasked with taming a few wild Rhinos by herself, she took on the challenge, no worries. When she had first joined the Doras, she laughed in the face of death should it try to intimidate her. Okoye was not easily frightened.

That was until she had fallen pregnant. Okoye had been scared because for one, she hadn't known until she was about almost 4 months along. She hadn't believed it at first. There had to have been some mistake! Her menstrual cycle never fluctuated once and...and she didn't feel any different. She didn't look any different. Wasn't there supposed to be cravings and weight gain?

But after she'd gotten the sonogram, seen the little life growing within her, reality smashed itself upon her shoulders.

Okoye: *paces* No, no! *runs a frustrated hand over her shaved head. *sits on her bed and bounces her leg and gets up again to pace some more* Shit! Pregnant?! *sharply inhales and puffs out a frustrated breath* Okoye: *sits on her bed again and intertwines her hands until they felt numb* This is a dream. This has to be a dream. Please, Bast. I cannot be pregnant. *squeezes her eyes before opening them again, her blurred gaze falling onto the black and white picture on the floor*

Okoye had cried for days after she'd gotten the news, trying to pull herself together, figure out what she wanted to do about her predicament. She'd began to wonder if her tears would ever stop.

Eventually they did. She spent a week thinking of what she wanted to do. Would the baby have been better being put up for adoption? Okoye didn't even dare think about the idea of throwing away her child. Bile boiled in her throat just thinking about it. But being someone's mother. Okoye didn't know if she was cut out for that either.

Okoye eventually decided to drop the news to her friends: Ayo and Aneka.

Okoye: *walks up to the couple who were already relaxing on a blanket in the grass* Aneka: *spots her* Oh! Look who finally decided to join us! I thought we were being stood up. Okoye: *stares at Aneka's head on Ayo's stomach while Ayo was caressing her cheek* You two probably wouldn't have noticed, I'm essentially a third wheel anyway. Ayo: *offensive gasp* I value your friendship very much, Okoye. *places a hand over her heart* This is a three way date if anything. Aneka: *flips over and hugs her arm's around Ayo's waist* She's probably just jealous. *pokes her tongue out at Okoye* You just need to get yourself a lover. Then you'll stop being Ms. Grumpy. Okoye: *silenty joins them on the blanket and crosses her legs* Ayo: *leans her upper half closer to Okoye in concern* What's the matter, Okoye? Usually you have a biting comeback. Okoye: *grips her leg tightly and opens her mouth to say something, but nothing comes out.* Aneka: *sits up and scoots over to Okoye* What's wrong? Okoye: *licks her lips and looks over to her friends* I'm pregnant. Ayo: What! *almost slips off her elbow* Aneka: You had a secret boyfriend?! Why didn't you say something? Who's the Baba? Is it that W'Kabi guy? *excitedly rubs Okoye's stomach* I knew he had his eyes on you. You could practically see the hearts in his pupils! Okoye: *sniffles and wipes her eyes* Ayo: Aww, Okoye. *shifts closer to give her a hug and Aneka joins in* It's alright. It's okay. Aneka: *rubs her back affectionately* Are you keeping it? Okoye: *shifts uneasily* I don't know if I'll be a g-good mother. Ayo: Okoye. *hugs her tighter* You'll definitely be a good mother. You're so sweet and loving and kind. Who wouldn't want you as an Umama? *smiles* Aneka: Besides, you're super good with kids, anyway! I'm imagining a mini you running around the village!! *gushes* You always mentioned having kids eventually! Okoye: *gives a light chuckle while wiping her eyes* Yes, but not at 17. I haven't even told my Uncle yet or any of my other family. Ayo: You should tell them soon, unless you want the baby to be a surprise. Aneka: *excitedly squeals* Oh Ayo, this means that we're going to be Aunts!! Ayo: I think it's going to be a girl. Aneka: Well, I think it will be a boy! *affectionately rubs Okoye's stomach some more* You're going to be really adorable when you swell up like a balloon!

Okoye had told her family of the news and they were supportive of her decision to keep it, but had gotten quite frustrated when they pressed but she wouldn't budge on the identity of the father. They decided to leave it be for the time being.

Even though Okoye had decided to keep her baby, she couldn't help but feel frustrated. She knew that as her pregnancy progressed, she wouldn't be able to fulfill her duties as a Dora. At least, not the particularly exciting missions. She'd definitely be put out of commission for a while. Fighting was definitely out of the question. Okoye placed a hand on her belly, thanking Bast that she hadn't gotten into any hairy situations that would have ended badly for her child.

Her child. The thought still felt foreign. In a few short months she was going to have a baby. She was still trying to get used to the idea. This was seriously happening. She was seriously bringing a tiny little human into the world that was going to be dependent on her for everything. It felt surreal.

Okoye had already been living by herself so she just needed to prepare a room for her baby, which Aneka and Ayo excitedly volunteered to help.

Aneka: What color should we paint his room? Ayo: Her room. Aneka: *grins* We should make a bet! If I win...you'll have to do something...anything I say! I won't say what though. Ayo: Fine, I subject you to the same fate then. *smirks* Aneka: Okoye, it's your baby. What do you think you're having? Okoye: As long as my baby is healthy I don't care about the gender. Aneka: Bast, 'Koye that's such a boring answer! I can see you roughhousing with your bouncing baby boy *playfully side eyes Ayo* And he can be all protective over his Umama! I just know he'd be a Mama's boy! Okoye: I'm serious!!! *smiles and gently caresses one of her blankets* I wouldn't mind if it were a girl, though. Ayo: Ha! *points at Aneka* Okoye sides with me! Team Girl outnumbers you. Aneka: *Gasps and holds her chest* When I'm right, you have hell to pay! Okoye: *laughs*

As the months progressed, Okoye felt herself growing attached to her baby. She wouldn't lie. It wasn't easy in the beginning, given how late she found out. And the initial fear that rooted itself at her core.

It started when she first felt her baby move. Okoye had been shocked at first. She even thought she'd been imagining it. But then she felt it again. Little flutterings in her womb that made her heart spike. It was new, but exciting and filled her with immense joy!

At times, Okoye would lay awake late at night to catch her baby wiggling around. She had read about what to expect during pregnancy but experiencing it was a whole other ball game.

Okoye: *places a gentle hand in her barely flat stomach* Hello in there. *gently drums her fingers on the flesh* Okoye's Belly: *slight movement* Okoye: *smiles through closed eyes* You're very responsive. Okoye: *turns on her side and rubs her belly* I had been uncertain at first, going along with this pregnancy. *inhales* But you're mine and I want to do right by you, Usana. Okoye: *looks down at her belly and gently rubs it* I still haven't thought of a name for you yet. Okoye's Belly: *lightly pokes* Okoye: Oh, you want a name? I have to think of the perfect one though. But for now I'll just call you Usana, okay? Okoye's Belly: Okoye: Hm, are you sleepy? Good night, my love. *kisses her fingers and then places them on her stomach*

Okoye had been worried as the months progressed but her baby hadn't been growing much. She was 6 months but her baby bump barely looked 4. She had made a trip to the doctor and was reassured that her baby was growing fine and there were no signs of abnormalities. This eased her heart some, but she couldn't help but think of the what-ifs at the back of her mind.

Aneka and Ayo had been bursting at the seams as Okoye's due date neared. Their niece or nephew didn't know what was coming with the onslaught of love they had locked and loaded waiting for their arrival!

Aneka: *plants her ear against Okoye's stomach* Hello in there! Are you awake? *lighty tickles Okoye's belly* Ayo: *on the other side of Okoye's belly* Don't you want to play? *kisses Okoye's stomach* I even brought a book for you for Umama to read! *kisses Okoye's stomach again* Aneka: Ow! *quickly lifts her head* Is it a fight you want? *glares at the spot on Okoye's stomach that she was hit* Okoye: Usana was sleeping but you just had to interrupt. You got what you deserved *laughs* Ayo: *hands Okoye the book and cuddles at her side* Aneka: *copies Ayo and gets comfortable next to Okoye* Okoye opens the book without protest as this was now routine with the three- four of them. She would read to her baby with the audience of Aneka and Ayo. They both said it would assist with bonding and providing stimulation for the baby. Ayo: Make sure to do the voices too, 'Koye. Baby loves it when you do that. Okoye: I'm sure that it's you who loves the voices, Ayo. *Okoye humors her friend nonetheless with her voice impersonations*

Ayo made sure that Okoye took all of her vitamins through the duration of her pregnancy. She'd bring in meals for her to eat as well because she couldn't bear the thought of her friend slaving over a hot stove to feed herself.

Aneka was Okoye's first line of defense against her cravings. Aneka would call her on her kimoyo beads and show off all the food and snacks selling at the marketplace and ask her what Okoye wanted before she stopped by.

Okoye was forever grateful of her friends. They were so sweet and supportive when they weren't truly obligated to do anything.

Okoye: *laying between Aneka's legs as she gently massages her stomach while Ayo was rubbing her feet* I really love you both. You don't have to be there for me in the way you have, but here you are. Ayo: Oh hush. We're best friends. Besides, we have to make sure you're good so our niece or nephew is good too! Aneka: Yea. We can't have a cranky Mama for Okoye Junior. Besides, we love doing this for you. *kisses the top of Okoye's head* Okoye: *sniffles and wipes her eyes* I really appreciate all you have done for me. Both of you are the best. Aneka: Yes, yes. *leans down and picks up a glass of okra water* Drink up. Okoye: *groans* Again? Ayo: Yes! You'l thank us later when Usana slides right out of you. My mother said I came out so fast I almost flew across the room! Okoye: *laughs* Ok, ok.

Okoye had decided on keeping the gender of her baby a surprise which slightly annoyed her family because they wanted to know if they should expect a new niece, nephew and most importantly, what to get them! Gift giving was a big thing for Okoye's family, but she just told them that this should make them get creative with their ideas.

Okoye thought she knew pain before she went into labor. She's been stabbed and thrown from great heights, breaking bones, suffered from internal injury and gotten concussed on more than one occasion. Labor pain was a whole other ball game. All the bones in her body felt like they were snapping at once. Was Bast paying a cruel joke on her?

Okoye was audacious to say that her pregnancy had run swimmingly up until then. No morning sickness. Barely any discomfort to complain of. She had really thought she had gotten off scott-free. But every so often she got those stabbing pains to her vagina AND asshole she had found herself questioning what she had gotten herself into. She couldn't dilate fast enough. That baby couldn't come out of her fast enough!

The actual delivery wasn't so bad. Her baby having been born after the third push.

Midwife: *lifts the crying baby up for Okoye to see with a bright smile* What did you make? Okoye: *looks up and grins* A girl! Midwife: Congratulations! *places the crying baby on Okoye's chest* Okoye: Hi there. *kisses her daughter's head and cheeks and eyelids* You're so small. *kisses her some more* Like a little pebble. *kiss kiss* Baby: *whimpers slow to a stop as she's bombarded by her mother's affections* Okoye: I love you. Mama loves you. *hugs her baby closer*

Aneka and Ayo had rushed over to the hospital after their mission to see Okoye and their newborn niece. They barely had time to shower and make it out the house because they were so excited.

Ayo and Aneka: *bursts through the door* Okoye: *sitting up in bed with her swaddled daughter* Aneka: *runs to the side of the bed* Let me see her! Don't worry, I washed my hands before I came in. *gently pulls down the blanket to see bright, curious eyes staring back at her.* Ayo: *joins them and coos* Oh my goodness, Okoye. She's so precious. Okoye: *looks down at her baby* For being so small, it was quite literally a pain to get her out. Ayo: *gently pokes baby's cheek* You couldn't wait a few more hours? You just had to come the day we were scheduled to return from a mission, hm? Aneka: *excited* Did you name her yet? Okoye: Yes! *looks down at her bundle of joy* Meet Riri. Riri, these are your Aunties. Aneka and Ayo. Aneka: That's such an adorable name. *baby voice* Hi Riri. Ayo: You're so cute, Riri. *gives her a pinky to hold* Ah, she's so strong! Okoye: Be careful, you may not get back that finger. She held mine hostage for almost two hours. Aneka: *shyly* Can I hold her? Okoye: Of course! Just make sure to support her head, okay? Aneka: *nods her head in understanding as Okoye carefully transfers Riri into her hold* Ayo: *walks over to Aneka to get a better look at Riri* She is super tiny. But so adorable. Now I have baby fever. Aneka: *looks over at her* Woah woah woah. No babies yet. We are going to have our hands full with this one as is. Okoye: *rolls her eyes*

Okoye utterly fell in love with her little Riri. Ten fingers, ten toes. Healthy, and she had her whole life to get to know her little Pebble.

Riri had the cutest, chubbiest kissable cheeks ever and that's what Okoye did. Kiss her to death! Okoye barely put Riri down the first two weeks after her birth and the baby definitely didn't mind it. Okoye loved her child to the moon and past the stars.

Okoye continued to read to her baby before bed which proved to be an effective way to soothe her to sleep. After Riri had her fill of milk, she'd fall asleep on her mother's nipple, lulled by the calming voice she was all too familiar with ever since her days in the womb.

Okoye had still been afraid of what the future would hold for her and her daughter. But she had never backed down from a challenge. And she was utterly excited for this new journey she was about to start with her baby girl. Okoye had planned to do her very best when it came to her Riri. No matter what.

SANDVEISS Sparks 3rd LP, ‘Standing In The Fire’

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

We've been tracking Quebec City four-piece SANDVEISS since at least 2015, when they contributed a track to the compilation Doomed & Stoned in Canada and have featured them throughout the years on The Doomed & Stoned Show.

‘Standing In The Fire’ (2024), their latest, bobs and weaves different stylistic elements together for something that could be classified progressive heavy rock. What remains consistent and gives the band its signature sound is a bravado rhythms from drummer Dominic Gaumond, guitars that growl and a bass that bruises, fantastic atmospheric elements, and a certain metallic vocal sheen of frontman Luc Bourgeois.

I dig the opener with its pulsating sci-fi synth effects of opener "I'll Be Rising." It reminded me of scenes from Panos Cosmatos' 2010 surreal retro flick Beyond the Black Rainbow, and I'm sure producer Karl Daniel Lidén (Dozer, Greenleaf, Demon Cleaner) had a hand in it. Eventually it goes full-on with electrified crunchy guitar action. The energy is undeniable and could suit up comfortably with anything currently on Sirius FM and modern rock/metal charts, especially the chorus. As AI "art" is all the rage these days, it's refreshing to see the band turn their attention on human talent for the music video to this song (collage artist and album art contributor Amanda Morely).

"Standing In The Fire" is a song about our modern way of life. "No one knows where it's going, no one has control." The world Each generation inheriting the problems of technology and development run amok. "Confusion is eating your mind day by day, your anger consumed heart is now fading away." This was also one of the singles and a music video, and is a stage-maker for sure with rainy, dark rock spirit.

"Wait And See" is a rip-roaring rhino on the loose, with a rolicking heartbeat that brings emphasis to the words "we are running out of time." Meanwhile, "No Love Here" has a misty, mysterious air about it, the longest track of the record, with elements that dovetail well with Elder and Alice in Chains on a mixtape.

"Fade (Into The Night)" has a hard driving revolution, and I can easily imagine myself listening to this wheeling along a sparse I-5 returning from a show in Portland, windows rolled down, cold midnight air pouring in.

"Gone Away" is one of the most appealing songs of the album with a dynamic pulse that will capture you in its sway. It's classic Sandviess, especially at 2:29 when the chorus kicks in and we have those glorious guitar strains from Shawn Rice (ending with some glorious two-guitar harmonies at 4:32, as Luc Bourgeois joins the fray) .

Maxime Moisan's basswork is a standout on the relentless penultimate "These Cold Hands, and "Bleed Me Dry" is a fantastic close to the album, with its sinister sounding doom-touched opening and a vocal attack that gives me David Draiman (Disturbed) vibes, rhythms that intensify into groove territory, and a extended stretch of solo and dual guitars that really transports the listener into epic realms of imagination.

The new Sandveiss album Standing in the Fire comes out October 11th on Folivora Records, available for pre-order on vinyl, compact disc, and digital format (get it here). Stick it on a playlist with Mastodon, Baroness, Retronaut, and Greenleaf.

The production of “Standing in the Fire” has a modern feel while still incorporating vintage sounds and instruments, and the mix by Karl Daniel Lidén (Greenleaf, Dozer, The Ocean Collective) adds depth, texture, and power to the album. Lyrically, the songs were mostly written in response to, or sometimes as a grim reflection on, human and social issues, including politics and environmental problems.

The band cites that they've pushed their boundaries on all sides. The heavy is heavier, the prog is proggier, and the catchy is catchier. They've allowed themselves to explore new territories while staying true to their core sound. They are recommended for fans of The Sword, Dozer, and Baroness.

Monster Next Door ep 1 Initial reaction

FINALLY AND YES!!! I’ve been in love since the trailer and I’m not disappointed. Diew is so relatable. You are saying he likes turtles an extreme amount? Me too? Also Bats and Rhinos. I live next to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and anyone who goes with me to that park will hear every fact I know about 200 times and yes I know most of the animals names. Who doesn’t? Did you know the giant tortoises about the tree of life are named after the universal original monsters? So Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature (of the black lagoon), Werewolfman, and I can’t remember the last one I’m sleepy… but there are 5 of them. Sometimes they fight and that’s why they sometimes put them in solo enclosures. They also like to escape. AND HE READS?! AND DOESNT LIKE TAKING HANDOUTS?! LOVES HIS EXTROVERT MOM. IS THIS BOY ME?!

Let’s get into the photo review!!!

Okay before we get into anything else this woman also might be stylistically me. I literally wear a demin jacket over a plain t shirt dress with white sneakers with rainbow accents to work EVERY SINGLE DAY. Is she also a lesbian because….. I’d definitely dream about her all day if she was in my university courses

Me walking into a bookstore. Ahh I’m home!!! Also I look ridiculously happy in a book store people will talk to me despite the headphones and the fact I’m standing still reading the first chapter of something anything. Just 10/10 on the comfort scale Diew is once again super in my wheel house

Precious little turtle his enclosure is so tiny but it does look nice. What a cutie!!!!

Wow God took reading that book to heart this is what romance is this is what I want. Someone willing to engage a little bit in what I like to actually appreciate it. Diew he’s sooo in love you’ve done it

Maybe I spend too much time on the internet because I instantly thought of “there is no such thing as a coincidence you and I are energetically aligned” hehehe I’m just imagining he’s the one who wrote the book they were talking about all episode. Sorry I know I should be like uwu they’ve had so many meetcues but hahaha this is my photo review so deal with it

YASSS GO GET YOUR INTROVERTS BOY GET TO KNOW HIS HEART AND VIBE I KNOW I HAVE MAINLY TALKED ABOUT DIEW BUT THIS BOY IS ALSO 10/10 wonderful deserves snuggles. He has friends who love him and that he looks out for. He has fun and interests and he’s intrigued with Diew and patient. Dream man. Also funny and the actor is pretty damn handsome.

Between both the left being like “No kink at pride, also we must make all queer lit and the internet acceptable to children and everyone ever uwu” and the right just banning everything and anything the tiniest bit queer, black, brown, disabled, just ANYTHING for any reason…….just imagine the backlash generation we’re raising. It’s been commented on and well-known that even aesthetic trends rebound generationally as a response so like….oh my god.

And if you know anything about authoritarian parenting and what kids tends to actually do as a result, these kids are going to GORGE on the most fucked up content they can get their hands on the moment they can get their hands on it. Either that or just soft and unprepared if we don’t push them in multiple areas and will flip the fuck out if someone doesn’t use insane TikTok censorship words. Because we’re infantilized them, not even given them the baby steps and tools to manage their own content. And I keep hearing people assume children have less and less ability to deal with heavy subjects—if you told people today some of the stuff my CATHOLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL had us read(“A Day No Pigs Would Die” for instance—pig insemination, animal death; let’s not even get into all the books with character death or how emotionally scarred I was from “Flowers for Algernon”), you’d have both sides up in arms and it’s just…really doesn’t push children intellectually and emotionally. Sure “Flowers for Algernon” haunts me to this day—but it gave me a LOT more empathy for the elderly and people with intellectual disabilities that I didn’t have as some random twelve year old who didn’t have to think about the horrors of dementia taking away everything you ever remembered away from you, or that a lot of people’s intellectual abilities definitely knew that people talked down to them and rushed them and were frustrated with them. That’s just one book. You can tell me those things all you want and I can know it on an intellectual level, but it’s not the same as knowing it emotionally because I experienced it through a book—through living it through the character’s eyes.

I literally had a parent think that the parents being eaten by a rampaging rhino—the fakest, least likely death to happen ever that was glossed over in a literal sentence in “James In The Giant Peach”—was too much for elementary school children. How do your kids get through the Lion King, ma’am. And imagine being told for eighteen years that you can’t, you’re too young, you’re too immature, your parents have to look over your shoulder for everything…and then being just dropped into whatever. It’s authoritarian textbook parenting—they’re either going to rebel and be edgelords and sneak it the entire time(please god) or exit into adulthood as unprepared little softshell crabs and freak. the fuck. out.

And it’s not the kids’ fault! This is a ‘participation trophy’ situation—It’s all of ours! We can’t even blame a SIDE here!!!!! It’s the left and the right!!! I can’t even entirely blame a kid for going through a 4chan phase because A)It’s a child that literally doesn’t know better, B) It’s practically the only space that doesn’t freak the fuck out and sense of “pffft you can handle it,” albeit obviously uhhh the one place shouldn’t be a place that harbors child porn and Nazis. Like the fact that we can’t find a middle ground on that is fucked. Like the idea that mods are in places to report TOS, however, they are ultimately not your parents and you’re responsible for yourself and learning your own content moderation and if you can’t manage it on the wider internet, then you need to stay on Roblox and/or get your internet physically moderated by your parents should not be controversial. Revised Jumpcahin Companion Stand Listing

Primarily from a single player CYOA/RP format called Jumpchain. It is about serial crossover travel. The player or Jumper can gain powers and characters. Many of these names and their relationships will be familiar but some have deviated from canon but developed for the better too.

The main character’s a self insert referred to as Jumper or The Jumper and eventually gets abilities to transfer and alter Stands. I ruled perfect transfers are nigh impossible or risky so some changed.

Benefactor is a Jumpchain term. A common conceit is you are contracted by a Ambiguous/Amoral Random Omnipotent Being to entertain it for a decade at a time in each setting. After that it moves you as a Quantum Leap, Reincationation to awaken at a certain age, or ISOT'd to next link on or off chain

And there is a supposed choir of angels called the "Masters of Howling" given to celebrate at times of day aloud. The choir name makes up the Stand name AND trigger phrase but in MTL Latin.

Finally, spoken aloud, the final Stand name is a reference to Donnie Darko. Also mitre, a bishop hat. I don't think, there is comet named or associated with it. Or an ersatz child surburban dance troupe.
