I think my biggest ace attorney hot take is that Kristoph’s black psyche locks not being broken was the best possible decision Takumi could have made
Phoenix trusts people, that’s his whole thing, but i think more importantly he trusts in the truth— that if he can just find that truth and put all the cards down on the table that things will be ok. We see in so many instances that his deeply ingrained savior complex and pursuit of truth often comes back to bite him and hurt himself and others. So honestly, him seeing Kristoph having black psyche locks and being able to accept that he doesn’t have to break them is such a vital step in his character to me
Phoenix doesn’t need the entire truth anymore— he doesn’t need to figure out what makes Kristoph tick. Time and time again Phoenix will not stop until all the dirty laundry is hung out to dry, until he knows the why’s and how’s and everything in between— but for once, with Kristoph, he doesn’t. Kristoph hurt people, and to him, that’s enough

Black Psyche locks
Dual destinies and Apollo Justice spoilers under the cut
In Dual Destinies black psyche locks appear in conjuction with a character who has been deluded into believing false memories they are responsible for a murder they didn't commit.
What if it was the same case with Kristoph Gavin?
(this is a watsonian discussion, not a doylist one and is approaching it with the idea that retcons to change the meaning of black psyche locks by the authors are not a thing.)

i need to write the fic where it's a flashback of a time to when kristoph and apollo are investigating something and then in the blink of an eye, something happens that could put apollo in mortal danger, like something's about to fall on him or someone's about to attack him, and then kristoph just instinctually "takes the bullet" for him.
kristoph has big brother instincts that just kick in when he sees klavier or apollo (or trucy, in my mind) specifically in danger and he doesn't even realize he's DONE anything until it's already done, and now maybe HE'S injured or bleeding or whatever. it wasn't a conscious action, it was because he cares for them but doesn't even know that he cares THAT much, enough to go against his most basic paranoid self-preserving instincts (which are incredibly strong motivating forces in him specifically by the way, he always protects himself first) and take a self-sacrificial action.
apollo is just in awe of him after that. his boss is his absolutely his hero. and kristoph is just having a bit of an internal crisis because why did he do that. why put himself in danger like that. why. why. why. why. it disturbs him, deeply. does kristoph really know so little about himself?

"Black Psyche-Locks represent a secret that an individual keeps subconsciously, without even being aware of it."
I think Sissel would have at least some during the game, considering he's forgotten his entire past.
I wonder what he was asked?

If you went back in time to your first trial, would you do anything differently knowing what you do now?

If only hanging still existed..though for you, you deserve worse than what the courts allow
You smile as you talk about her death
You relished stabbing her, didn't you?
You loved it.
You killed her and you enjoyed it.
Didn't you?

me when i’m in an “introducing a major antagonist whose crimes span across multiple cases and then revealing something at the end of the game that shows they’re a more complex character only to never mention them again” competition and my opponent is the apollo justice trilogy

Man suddenly i want Technus and Ghost writer to team up and put danny in a mutiple ending Visual novel. To teach him of caused and consiquenses.  And for Danny to Escape he had to complete all ending. But he already complete all ending with his well known possible allies and enemies. Who could he be missing.

Trying to think about what would make Lu Guang open up about going back and am forced to admit that the only times he's in any way opened up in-series are when he's been forced to by outside circumstances beyond his control.
He panics if Cheng Xiaoshi is about to go off plan or he doesn't know what's coming photo-wise, but otherwise is incredibly good at keeping his cool.
That said, the only times he's been "confronted" to any extent so far remain post-earthquake and you could also argue when he was called on his reaction to the idea that powers could be passed on in s2. In these cases, he tends to deliberately underplay his reaction and let others just make their own assumptions. His deflections at present work because no one is truly looking to realise it's what they are. His quietness also absolutely comes to his advantage because his personality doesn't allow him to "slip" in the same way as a more talkative character would. (And doesn't that just make me think about how all the comments about him being "mature" imply he wasn't always like he is now. I doubt it's an entire façade he's putting on, but he has changed irreparably.)
The exception to this is, of course, when Cheng Xiaoshi was shot and he completely lost it. It's not that he's just dead emotionally or anything the rest of the time, but this is the one thing (person) he's sacrificed his beliefs for. And before it got to this stage, there was still some control, but Cheng Xiaoshi getting shot is a double whammy. Not only is Lu Guang no longer in control of the situation (he lost that back when he got stabbed) but if the implication is that Cheng Xiaoshi got shot the first time, then his reaction here is pure instinct. There's no thought in it whatsoever and even after both of them return from the hospital, he's clearly not taking it for granted.
Thinking to season three though. He's still off-kilter for now and Liu Xiao will likely ensure he remains that way. The fact we've been let into Lu Guang's POV now means we'll get to see those cracks that have been forming throughout season two and watch them widening.
Qiao Ling's knowledge is the key. If Lu Guang is to open up properly, it has to be external. Either a danger to Cheng Xiaoshi so potent he's forced to act without thinking or someone actually pushing and not letting him deflect. Someone with enough knowledge to realise that he's deflecting in the first place.

ouhggh alright ive been replaying aa4 recently and yknow. i always forget how UTTERLY INFURIATING the missed potential with klavier. my god.
to begin with, he was something so fresh and interesting to aa prosecutors. all our previous prosecutors needed to learn to value the truth over their own victory, but klavier already values the truth! though seemingly arrogant, he isnt antagonistic to apollo and helps him out. he seems cheerful, confident, and moral! and so, naturally, his arc would be something far more personal than previous prosecutors... right......
we even see hints of it. in 4-3, when we go to his office, he asks if you would like to speak to klavier, lead singer of the gavinners, or prosecutor gavin, terror of the courtroom. seems like! theres a real discrepancy in the ways he tries to present himself! like hes trying to be something hes not! 4-3 in general has SO MUCH of klavier in his personal life. this is almost like,, setting up a character arc or something!
but NOPE. klavier really IS just a cheery, confident rockstar lawyer who is almost entirely unaffected by HIS BELOVED BROTHER'S JUST. EVERYTHING. ALL THE STUFF HE DID. oh, is he just pretending to be unaffected? maybe due to being a famous singer and growing up with That Guy ad a role model, maybe hes good at detaching himself from his emotions? maybeNOPE, hes just good ol' klavier, not a care in the world!
of course i still love mr klavier gavin, but i sure would like him a lot more if he had SOME SUBSTANCE

Dear Anonymous,
Tumblr media
Let me set the record straight. Kristoph Gavin is doing just fine. He's not in some catatonic state or any state that was a result of forcibly breaking his Black Psyche Locks. I had no intention of doing that, since I didn't even know what they were at the time.
Tumblr media
From what Pearls has told me about the effects, I doubt that's what happened to Gavin. There are different ways to break Black Psyche Locks. One seen with Athena, the other by force which would put the person at a state of shock, but also the Black Locks could turn to red ones.
Tumblr media
If he did break down, it was from getting caught or being in a state of confusion. It might've had something to do with breaking the Psyche Locks, but I wouldn't know since I wasn't there.

actually i really do think the amount of times maya has dragged phoenix into doing spirit medium training with her is insane. like it absolutely wasn't a one-off thing when he did it with her at the end of aa3 since pearl mentions that she's gonna make them a reservation for something even HARDER than the special course. i literally think over the course of the seven year gap whenever they had time for a little family vacation up to hazakura temple maya would drag phoenix into training with her every single time and he would bitch and moan and complain about it but he always gives in because. it's maya. of course he's gonna give in. and he works in the borscht bowl where it's freezing cold all the time he doesn't even have the excuse of "i hate the cold!" anymore. so he grumbles and whines and sits under the stupid waterfall and does the stupid meditation and says the stupid spells. and of course trucy spends the whole time hanging out with pearl and also side-eyeing phoenix like "man this new daddy of mine is so weird. i love it"
