H.P. Carlsen (Nov. 30, 1855 - 1950) was a Danish artist who trained at the Royal Academy in the 1870s along with future stars of Danish art, such as L.A. Ring. But Carlsen was given to drink and soon found himself in the poor house in Copenhagen at all of 24. He never became successful and by 1892 he was committed to a workhouse in Odense where he spent 57 years altogether. He was the last inmate in the institution which closed after his death...
Carlsen invented his own technique while a workhouse inmate. He would coat waste paper in white distemper (glue-based) paint, which was then overlaid with a charcoal solution. He would then rub and scratch the black surface to get shapes and textures to appear, creating black and white landscape paintings that were as detailed as any air-brush technique.
Carlsen would sell his works from his cell where he was allowed visitors, or in pubs and bars in town on his weekly leave. He was proud that even at age 93 he could sell his works and spend the money on up to 20 shots of booze, which he took in black coffee - and still make it home to his cell before curfew!

In our setting, Florida doesn't exist, but in reality, I grew up there! And I'd like to take a moment on this nice Friday morning to spotlight the Florida Highwaymen, whose landscapes adorn my childhood. My dad thought these guys were the absolute coolest and so should you.
Thanks for joining me this Florida Friday, which will not necessarily be a regular thing (I just love alliteration).
Mary Ann Carroll (1940-2019), “Untitled (Backcountry Twilight)”, n.d., Oil on Masonite board
Harold Newton (1934-1991), “Untitled (Painting of the Indian River)”, c. 1958, Oil on Upson board; Alfred Hair (1941-1970), “Untitled (Marshland with palm), c. 1958, Oil on Upson board
James Gibson (1938-2017) “Untitled (Moonlit palms)”, n.d., Oil on Upson board
In early 2021, Tampa Museum of Art presented the work of Florida’s famous Highwaymen painters in the exhibition Living Color: The Art of the Highwaymen.
From the museum-
The Highwaymen are a group of African American artists celebrated for their distinctive paintings of Florida’s natural environment. Working in and around the Fort Pierce area beginning in the 1950s, these self-taught artists depicted the state’s scenic coastline and wild backcountry, often in dazzling combinations of color and tone. Brilliant tropical sunsets, windblown palms, towering sunlit clouds, and blooming poinciana trees are among the many subjects that have become iconic images of Florida in part because of the paintings that the Highwaymen created. In the state’s postwar boom years their paintings found an enthusiastic audience among a growing population of new residents and visitors. Unrecognized by the region’s art establishment of galleries and museums, the Highwaymen by necessity catered directly to their patrons, selling their paintings door-to-door along such thoroughfares as Route 1. It was from this practice that the name “Highwaymen” was later coined.
The popularity of Highwaymen paintings waned in the 1980s as the vision of Florida was reimagined by an ever-increasing population and once-pristine landscapes were lost to development. Then in the mid-1990s a new generation of collectors, with fresh eyes, rediscovered the paintings and began to assemble significant collections. These collectors saw the art of the Highwaymen as an important artistic legacy and together with several writers, scholars, and enthusiasts began the process of establishing the historical context and reevaluation of their work. Books and articles followed, bringing a new level of recognition for the achievements of these artists and, with that, growing popular acclaim. The contribution of the Highwaymen to the cultural life of Florida was formally recognized in 2004 when the group of 26 artists was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.
Living Color: The Art of the Highwaymen brings together 60 paintings by a core group of the Highwaymen including Al Black, Mary Ann Carroll, Willie Daniels, Johnny Daniels, James Gibson, Alfred Hair, Roy McLendon, Harold Newton, Sam Newton, Willie Reagan, and Livingston Roberts.
Focusing on work produced from the 1950s to the 1980s, the exhibition is an in-depth examination of the group’s initial period of success when their groundbreaking style of fast painting was being developed. Fast painting is a hallmark and essential innovation of the Highwaymen. Facing limitations imposed by the racial prejudice of their time, they had little or no access to formal training or to conventional art markets. To overcome these obstacles, they produced large numbers of works which could be sold at very affordable prices. Some estimates of the group’s overall production during their heyday exceed 200,000 paintings, with certain artists creating dozens of paintings per day. Their creative response to the racism they confronted resulted in an original artistic practice.
Opening at The Woodson African American Museum of Florida in St. Pete this Saturday, 9/9/23, is Florida Highwaymen: The Next Generation – The Legacy Continues, an exhibition of work by Ray McLendon, son of Highwayman Roy McLendon, who creates Florida landscapes in the same iconic style his father used.

The interview (NSFW) FT Sana and Nayeon
Operator's Notes: Well that's all the twice girls now… might make this an AU but I'm unsure TBH so if not enjoy. Hopefully this is a bit more digestible then the other story I plan to release this week.
“Look boss you'll completely kill this interview,” I tell you excited.
You look at me perplexed and respond “Dio I know you're trying to be encouraging but this is the Ishtar collective, one of the most exclusive and secretive artist think tanks in the world.”
“Yeah, and they reached out to interview you for your beautiful paintings.”
You blush then ease as we arrive at the minimalist unmarked black building.
“Show some confidence Orion you got this,” I say to you as you walk in,”
You approach the front desk sheepishly where a dark-haired woman wearing a black jacket, a bralette top some of the shortest shorts you've ever seen. She smiles at you.
“You must be Orion. I was given your picture by our boss. I am Mina,” she says smiling. You nod Mina gets up from her work (she's sculpting something) and leads you to a back room. You follow the young woman to the back room the door is a simple understated pink.
“Here is the room where your interview will be conducted. Good luck!” Mina says with a flirty smirk and lip bite. You pause before saying.
“Thank you, Mrs?”
“Myoui. Mina Myoui, but please call me Mina. I don't like the formal speaking.” she says happily. You nod as you walk in.
The first thing that hits you is the scent of arousal that permeates the air. You walk in slowly as you do you notice the dimness of the room. As you look around you see an obtuse and abstract chair.
"Please sit," a voice says from the darkness causing you to jolt, and fall. As you fall to the ground and get up you hear.
"Oh, I am so sorry," as an arm grabs you and helps you to your feet. A brunette with soft eyes and an easy smile eyes appraises you. She helps you sit down on the large chair, before taking your lap.
"So you're the mysterious Hunter of the night. Architect and Master landscape painter," the lady said. Her voice dripped seduction as she eyed you with a sexy glare.
"Um Yes?" you say awkwardly. Sana smiles, and says,
"You are probably confused so let me explain. We at the Ishtar Collective believe that Love, Affection, and Sex are all a part of great art. So all of us are in a free-use community, Is that okay?"
Your brain short-circuited for a moment. You had heard of Free-use and figured it was more a cheap porn plot point than an actual thing in real life but here you were being eye fucked by a beauty.
You gulped excitedly then say, "That's perfectly fine if it means I get to fuck you, babe." The lady blushed and said,
"Oh, I knew you'd be perfect. My name is Sana. Nayeon and I will be conducting the rest of your interview. Now let's begin." Sana whispers sexily in your ear as the both of you strip. Nayeon whose chest and thighs were the only visible parts of her while she sat in the corner says,
"Sana start him off slow,"
Sana slowly stroked you as Nayeon walked from the shadows into the lit part of the studio. She wears a pleasant smile but her eyes speak of her hunger. Slowly Sana's delicate hands rise along your shaft as she tries to coax a large load out of you. Her eyes are innocently staring at you despite the sinful act she's pressuring you with. You moan and when Nayeon closes in Sana stops before going to kiss her. The two moan as they kiss and begin to touch each other. Nayeon runs her giant hands around Sana's perfect perky tits and you watch deliriously Sana notices you eyeing her tits then says,
"Do you want them baby." you nod helplessly as she lowers herself between your legs. She smiles as she wraps them around your shaft. Nayeon smiles and says,
"you are going to love this." and Nayeon isn't wrong. Your last girlfriend didn't have the size to fully wrap around you but Sana's are perfect as her perky mounds rub rigorously around your shaft. She smiles as she watches your eyes roll into the back of your head. You moan as you buck your hips into her chest.
"Are you close?" Sana asks a moment too late as you explode all over her chest. Sana smiles as your cums erupt onto her chest and face, as you recover Nayeon moves to Sana and begins licking your cum off her statuesque body. You watch with horny vigor as you quickly become hard again. Nayeon notices and smiles. You watch as she closes in on you as her hips sway. Nayeon notices and puts her big butt in front of me as she begins to grind on my hard cock.
"You like my ass huh?" she questions and on some disgusting impulse, your response is to spank her.
"You dirty slut." you growl and Nayeon smiles.
"You catch on quick." she says, "harder" she adds. You nod as you begin to spank her repeatedly before you can't take anymore. You plunge into her vice grip tight cunt. Nayeon moans happily as you thrust into her.
"Fuck yes. fuck me with that cock. Destroy my pussy" she says in between moans. You ram harder into her as her pussy pulsates and sucks you in deeper, and deeper. She's dripping no sopping wet as you thrust in and out of her. She can barely take it. Neither can you because you reach your peak and explode in Nayeon. She moans as she goes limp as she cums around your cock. Your combined fluids pool under the both of you and Sana crawls to Nayeon before pulling her down to the floor with her in a lurid kiss. The two girls moan as they lie together on the floor kissing and moaning.
"Yeah you're so fucking hired," Nayeon says in between rapacious kisses with Sana.
"You will start tomorrow," Sana says as she waves you off. You nod and go back to the front desk where Mina is waiting. I called you to pick me up and inform you I got the job.
"Yeah, baby that's what I am talking about. Told you that you'd get the job," I yell in my car before heading to pick you up. You laugh as and Mina gets up before handing you a paper note with her number and "congratulations" written on it. I pick you up five minutes later and we drive home.
When steps into the apartment, Jihyo is there waiting, sitting on the couch with her usual calm, patient smile. Just seeing her relaxes something in me. She looks up as we walk in, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “Hey, love,” she says, her voice soft and warm. “How did everything go?”
Before I can answer, you disappear down the hall, calling back that you are going to shower. I turn back to Jihyo, who’s still looking at me, her smile as gentle as ever like she has all the time in the world for me.
She asks, “What would you like for dinner?” It’s so her—always putting me first, always checking in.
I feel a pang of guilt. She’s constantly doing things to make life easier for me, and sometimes I worry I take it for granted. I cross the room, sit beside her, and take her hand. “What do you want, babe?” I ask, looking right into her eyes, hoping she feels how much I appreciate her.
She pouts, letting out a soft sigh. “Honestly? I want you to choose.” She squeezes my hand. “I’ve been making choices all day, and right now, I’d love a break. Think for me?”
I nod, brushing my thumb over her knuckles. “Fried chicken. Extra crispy, just how you like it.”
She beams, and there’s this little spark in her eyes that makes me feel like the luckiest guy alive. As I get up to start cooking, her voice follows me, a simple, “Thank you,” that somehow means so much more.
I hear your phone ping from the hallway. You check it to see it's a text from Mina. She is asking to hang out with you tonight. You quickly text her your address and “say come on over, but no funny business Sana and Nayeon drained me today,” Mina sends a smiley face back. After her text, you call out from behind the closed door, “Hey, Dio! I’ve got someone coming over for dinner. Can you make extra? I met her at my interview today.”
I pause, leaning against the kitchen counter. “Business thing or…romantic?” I ask, raising an eyebrow even though he can’t see it.
“Romantic,” he replies after a beat. “But, don’t worry—she’s not in my department, so no rules are getting broken.”
I scowl, feeling a protective instinct kick in. “Alright, as long as you know what you’re doing.” I shake my head, grabbing another pack of chicken from the fridge. Jihyo glances at me, amused.
“Is he going to be alright?” she asks, an edge of worry softening her gaze.
I shrug, trying to play it off. “Orion’s got a way of keeping things interesting.” But she sees right through me, just like always, and gives my hand a reassuring squeeze as I get to work on dinner, the steady rhythm of our life flowing back around us.
You go to shower and replay the events of your interview in your mind. Nayeon's assjob, and Sana's titjob all end with the creampie. You also wonder why you were so insatiable with them. You wonder if it had something to do with the women or the air of the office. As you clean yourself of the filth of the office you hear the doorbell ring. You quickly finish up, and come out of your room.
As I finish up in the kitchen, I glance over at the couch, where Jihyo and Mina are chatting away. Mina’s in this cute white sweater, looking unexpectedly innocent compared to the bold outfit she rocked during your interview. She sits with her hands folded on her lap, her cheeks tinged with a soft blush. Mina smiles, a little shyly—a complete departure from her confident attitude at the Ishtar Collective. “Jihyo’s so pretty,” she says softly, casting an admiring glance her way.
Jihyo beams, a warm laugh escaping her. “Oh, you’re the one who’s pretty! And don’t get me started on your skin—it’s flawless.”
Mina blushes harder, ducking her head as she responds, “No, you’re seriously stunning. And those abs? Insane.”
Jihyo laughs again, shaking her head and pointing a thumb toward me. “Thanks, but I have to work hard for them because this joker keeps feeding me so well.”
Without turning from the stove, I call back, “You could always not eat it.”
Jihyo pouts dramatically, folding her arms. “But then all that extra food will go to waste!”
You chuckle from across the room. “Between the two of us, no chance of that.”
Mina glances over at him, her eyes lighting up as she laughs. “Is he really that good of a cook?” she asks, genuinely curious.
You nod, leaning against the back of the couch. “The best. Learned from his dad and his uncle. They put him through the wringer, and it paid off.”
Mina turns to me, chuckling. “I can see that,” she says with a grin. “So… Dio, huh?”
I nod. “Yep. Just like the anime character,” I add, anticipating her next question.
She smiles, taking the explanation in stride, and slides over to make room for you at the table. You sit beside her, close enough that your shoulders nearly touch. I notice her fingers fidgeting nervously in her lap, her hands lightly trembling. You, picking up on it, reach out and gently place your hand over hers, your touch steadying her.
“So, Mina,” you ask casually, “how long have you been with the Ishtar Collective?”
She relaxes slightly, her voice gaining confidence. “Almost six years now,” she says. “It’s been…intense but rewarding.”
Jihyo’s eyes widen with genuine interest. “Wow, that’s amazing! What kind of art do you do?”
Mina’s face lights up as she answers, “I’m a sculptor. I work with all sorts of materials—stone, clay, and even metal sometimes. Guess you could say I’m pretty good with my hands.” She wiggles her fingers innocently, a subtle smirk creeping onto her lips.
I shoot a knowing look at you, and you raise an eyebrow, clearly catching her meaning. Jihyo, however, grins, completely charmed. “That’s so cool! You must be insanely talented.”
“Thank you,” Mina replies, the blush returning as she shifts her gaze toward you, holding it for a beat longer than necessary. You smile back at her.
Just then, I carry the fried chicken over to the table, setting down the steaming platter. “Alright, folks, dig in,” I say, motioning for everyone to help themselves. I also made mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, collard greens, and green beans.
Jihyo beams at me as she takes a piece, her eyes sparkling with gratitude. “See?” she says to Mina with a playful nudge. “The best cook I know.”
You smile, stealing a glance at Mina as he reaches for a piece himself. “Looks like tonight’s full of surprises,” you say, your tone light but charged. You take a bite and are greeted by the familiar sweet beet you knew of my fried Chicken. Jihyo coos as she says “As always you overperform,” I smile. Jihyo turns to you and Mina before saying, “The best part of having a foreign boyfriend is he makes all the yummy foreign foods,” You and Mina laugh.
“I aim to please,” I respond.
Mina stares at me and says in English, “Are you American?” I nod and Mina smiles. You and Jihyo roll your eyes as we dig into and then finish the meal.

Wood Engraving Wednesday
NICHOLAS WILSON
This wood engraving, World View by Arizona painter, sculptor, and engraver Nicholas Wilson (b. 1947), is reproduced in the Wood Engravers' Network Fifth Triennial Exhibition, 2024-2026 catalog of the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN), the national organization for American wood engravers. I was the juror for this traveling exhibition.
Wilson is a self-taught artist who has lived in Arizona for over 30 years. His work tends to focus on the natural environment he encounters in the Arizona landscape. On making wood engravings, Wilson writes:
Among the various media I work in, my favorite, as I grow older, is wood engraving. The graphic expression of subject, presented in black and white parallel lines, dots and dashes, enable me to render my thoughts in precise detail.
