SUCCESS STORY (manifesting)

OMFG you guys! I did it! I made it to my desired reality! I'm living my desired life!

All I did was decide it's done. More specifically, I just did Angel's fulfillment challenge (which you don't have to do). Everyday I just decided to live like I was in my desired reality right now as often as I could and whenever I wanted to.

If I vented, I vented. If I ranted I ranted. If I sabotaged my manifestation I just decided it wouldn't matter and that nothing would ruin my manifestation and everything was ok and fine.

And this is totally optional but I affirmed sometimes. I just did to remind myself that it was done.

My affirmations were:

-I'm living my desired life

-Nothing can ruin my manifestation

-I'm in my desired reality

-I'm in my desired reality in my penthouse in Tokyo

-I have all my desires

-The 3D conforms instantly

And it worked! And now I'm happy! I woke up today IN my penthouse in Tokyo! The view of the city is amazing. I checked my bank account and it turns out I'm super rich! Like I literally have BILLIONS of dollars. And it's like I always get millions of dollars out of nowhere! So it's like I get paid just to exist!

Also life in this reality is soooooooo different than on Earth. Like the people in the city are nice... but they aren't just humans beings. I'm seeing Japanese monsters walking around wearing uggs! I can also see Godzilla walking around in a place in the city it's so cool! (don't worry, they made a place in the city specifically for her)

I can also enter the void anytime I fall asleep. Like everytime I go to sleep I wake up IN the void state completely aware. I know this because I just decided I would go to sleep and I did! (one of the things I also manifested, to fall asleep instantly)

And guess what? I also revised my ENTIRE life. Like all the shitty, terrible things that happened to me and all the awful things I've done are GONE! They never happened. All the arguments I had with people on Youtube are gone, they never happened. I never met those people. All the people who I argued with on Discord, well I never argued with them. All the problems with my family are gone.

I also have new memories of me being in Highschool. It went great! I made some friends, they never got angry at me, I got to play my videogames, and I never had to deal with any kind of stress. And I also have my college degree even though I never went to college.

I'm a lucky duck who lives in one of the markets getting the limited release of Dandelion! Per Nat's request here are my thoughts to tide you over until it's more widely accessible.

As I said in my immediate reaction post, KiKi Layne was built for the big screen. This movie is full of gorgeous closeups of her. And medium-sized shots, and distance shots, and ok maybe it's just me, but bless this movie for making her a singer-songwriter-guitarist, because this means there are so many lingering closeups of her hands, and oh mY GOD NOT TO BE A LESBIAN (gender-neutral) BUT >:)))))))))

I could look at KiKi Layne all day, and now I could also listen to her sing all day. Her voice is beautiful and so expressive. She said in press leading up to it that she was nervous to share her singing voice and maybe that had something to do with just how expressive she is as a singer. Maybe sharing that is more intimate for her than the on-screen nudity this movie also has, and which is also compelling as hell.

This pro review notes that KiKi contributed to the music writing, which is so cool! It also acknowledges that much of the dialogue isn't quite right, often a little too like an essay or a headline to be organic for these characters, while getting at how forgivable that is in a movie whose soul is in the music and the visuals and the chemistry.

Somewhat miraculously for a movie with a white writer-director whose skill isn't primarily in dialogue, about a Black lead in a mostly-white place, it's conscious about race without being didactic. Dandelion is wary of going to white redneck territory for a music competition, and there's a sequence where microaggressions turn into shitty petty crime, but she's also not the only Black person in the sea of likely [redacted] voters. The movie does get a touch didactic about the struggles of women in creative industries, so maybe it wasn't a product of careful effort so much as Nicole Reigel's limited perspective, but the result works. Antiblackness isn't The Conflict of The Movie, simply a shitty part of the background radiation of Dandelion's life.

The music is so damn good. Soundtrack album here! Though the album tragically leaves off two of the movie's best songs: the stunning final number where Tracy Chapman vibes meet Prince, and a cover of 90s white boy song Hey Jealousy that starts off as mere pleasant background track introducing us to KiKi's voice and turns into a sleeper thematic tornado. Once you've seen the movie go look at Hey Jealousy's lyrics and backstory so you can join me in screaming about it and these characters.

Dandelion is a little movie, marvelously so. It's about just a few people in a short time in their lives. I hadn't thought about it like this until now but there are several thematic as hell shots of one or two characters shown tiny and off to the side amid sweeping rocky nature. The artsy shots of flowers superimposed on emotive faces aren't my taste but the overwhelming scale of the landscapes really spoke to me and now I'm realizing this is why.

There's a thing about some side characters wanting to be the biggest band in the world that's kind of an example of the clunky dialogue and kinda perfect for how wonderfully small this movie is. It doesn't matter where Dandelion's career goes after this. These scant few weeks of her life make for such a rich story on their own. This moment in time matters, even if these events don't turn out to have any more effect on the characters' futures than they do on the timeless mountains and prairies of South Dakota.

Fandom people are probably more likely to connect with this movie than the average non-musician viewer because of something that baffled me about a review I wildly disagreed with. Apparently some people can watch this and not understand how fast two people can develop deep intimacy and attachment despite barely knowing each other, just because they make art together. I don't understand how that reviewer didn't understand. You make art with someone and you're in each other's souls. It's intoxicating to collaborate with someone who gets what you're trying to say with your art and helps you make something that best captures the ineffable but crystal clear thing you're trying to say.

Not so intoxicating that you can no longer make rational decisions — but, well, in a way maybe it's the more rational decision to keep chasing the high of drift compatible creation, even when the person you've found to be your musical brain twin is maybe a not great choice in other ways.

Purely for Book of Nile reasons this movie is a damn gift. Tons of shots would be so easy to swap out one scruffy white boy's face for another. (Though Thomas Doherty is the same height as KiKi, which I personally enjoy, it's fun to have variety.) So much of the lyrics are extreme bait for gifsets and fic titles. (Tiny for the movie but very big for the BoNers spoiler: SHE LITERALLY CALLS HIM OLD MAN.) The first two thirds of the movie I kept thinking how perfect this plot would be as a BoN musicians AU — until a twist where I was both so pissed on Dandelion's behalf and internally screaming BOOKER WOULD NEVER.

As I was watching the final scenes I kept waiting for a thing to happen that didn't happen, a certain way of resolving the romance. The ending we do get left me yearning a little. But starting a few hours after leaving the theater the yearning subsided and now a week later my satisfaction with the ending has fermented into a yearning only to listen to that last song on loop forever. (WHY is it not on the soundtrack. I mean, TRACY CHAPMAN MEETS PRINCE.)

One more thing before I go. Dandelion is another thrilling expansion of the repertoire of KiKi's characters in terms of vibes and aesthetics. She looks so different than Nile in a theoretical mirror image outfit of practical boots and jeans and an oversized borrowed button-down thrown over a tee. None of KiKi's other characters, not even gentle Tish, would look so at home in delicate florals, doubly so when they're paired so effortlessly with a comfy denim jacket. And KiKi's physicality here is unique to this person: Dandelion, Theresa, a guitarist. Wholly unlike Margaret the dancer or Nile the warrior. Maybe someday Nile will grow locs like Dandelion's though.

In conclusion: watch Dandelion! I'm as glad I saw this in theaters as I was glad I watched Don't Worry Darling at 1.5x in a small corner of my laptop and only slowed it down for Kiki's scenes. The limited release is real limited, alas, but if you have access to a biggish tv to stream it on I'd strongly recommend making that effort. Both for the landscapes and those gorgeous closeups of Kiki's face.

im the psychotic wilbur anon (forgot to note im paranoid schitzo and i see myself so much in him ANYWAYS) BUT CWILBUR BPD FOR THE WORLD. (< ALSO BPD.) hottest take is that him and quackity are bpd4bpd and a huge part of their relationship is a learning curve figuring out how to navigate communication with each other and each others splits and such. i also think that wilbur tends to black split on HIMSELF more often, and quackity tends to black split on OTHERS more often. i also think that wilbur white splitting on quackity would be a whole nother thing they have to deal with, with wilbur suddenly being like "you are literally god to me and the only person who loves and cares about and understands me you are the greatest human being alive please let me worship you i love you so much" and quackity just being like "woag dude" LIKE. also im so so so for real wilbur has so much paranoid schitzo swag i dont know how to explain that this man is fucking TEXTBOOK paranoia and he has so many paranoid anxiety habits that make me feel insane. i think he always makes sure to lock the door and check the lock like six times when he comes home and he cant sleep at night if hes alone in the house so he barely slept in paradise and didnt sleep right until he moved in with quackity, i think he has really severe paranoia about imposters and intruders and also barely slept and was constantly on high alert in pogtopia and he could only really sleep when quackity visited or if tommy or technoblade shared a mat with him, i think he also has delusions of grandeur that he has to deal with a lot and reality checking him can be really dangerous especially coupled with his bpd because he then SNAPS to black splitting on himself so hard he makes himself sick, ohhhh cwilbur my sickly man i adore you so sorry for being insane in your inbox

The first ask in question

(Ok so as a disclaimer obviously headcanons are personal and there's no wrong ones and you're valid for reading it this way)

With Wilbur I very much agree, but I don't see bpd in Quackity tbh. It more so looks like ADHD alongside shit like abandonment issues, being invalidated his entire life, being generally overworked and having no healthy outlet for his feelings, having trouble identifying said feelings in the first place, etc - all of which are very common in/characteristic of ADHD. I don't remember him ever splitting. His shitty love life makes sense with ADHD too - deficiency of dopamine makes it very easy to mistake the dopamine boost from "new person to talk to" for a crush (believe me). Hypersexuality is also common in ADHD, as well as emotional dysregulation, alexithymia (difficulty/inability to identify one's own emotions), overstimulation, shutdowns, etc, which can occasionally resemble splitting, but is very different, and works through exhaustion and frustration rather than delusions. Various types of paranoia as well as heightened irritability are also very common, especially when your senses are clouded by sensory/information/emotional overstimulation. And especially the splitting outwards part just doesn't sit right with me - maybe i missed a stream or sth but I haven't seen anything like that in him. Furthermore I'd actually say he generally points negative feelings/breakdowns etc inwards for the most part - and when ADHD is being pointed inwards it usually leads exactly to developing/heightening shit like paranoia, rejection sensitivity, hypersexuality, emotional dysregulation, alexithymia, etc. He can snap and isolate himself, but it's very different to splitting. ALSO - very important part - Quackity doesn't exhibit mania episodes. He occasionally exhibits the type of hyperactivity and excitement representative of ADHD, but it's never this state of delirium with feelings of grandeur, delusions, etc. Wilbur does exhibit mania episodes - pretty heavily at that - and the contrast makes it pretty apparent that Quackity's case is different.

THAT BEING SAID I don't have bpd, so for a perspective from someone who does, here's a rant from @octobre-ackedia: <<On so many levels, Quackity doesn't show bpd symptoms. Not all abandonment issues are borderline personality disorder. I don't think I need to say it, but bpd takes over the entire life of a person, it's not just trauma. And I don't really have much to elaborate on with the ask, mostly showing Wilbur's bpd traits but that's for an entirely different rant, and I need to chill out. Quackity doesn't black split on others. It was not shown a single time. He slowly loses trust in people, he builds walls, but that's not splitting. He doesn't start to irrationally hate everyone around himself, think that people are just cruel and bad, and more importantly don't care about him, suddenly becoming aggressive towards them. He backs off a little bit more with each disappointment in people around him, ending up not so much hating, as avoiding human relationships. Quackity learnt how to trust the guy, building a friendship, but never became truly "obsessed" with him. He grieved his death, tried to save him, but FFS, that's not a favourite person, that's how human relationships work (or more so, hybrid relationships haha). He doesn't get manic. You could say he becomes strongly confident, hypersexual or overworking himself, but the important part in it is the reasoning. He doesn't start believing he is some sort of a saviour for the world and can build a perfect country, or that he doesn't need anyone for that. He starts a project and might go overboard with it, but it's never this... aggressive as with bpd. With the 9 most visible symptoms, he has maybe 3 of them, which are all clear reactions to specific situations. Unstable relationships? Schlatt became an abuser, Karl and Sapnap abandoned him, he never really influenced any of that happening. The abandonment issues and feeling of emptiness are simple reactions to that trauma. His moves are calculated, he doesn't really show any mood swings, he has a quite clear image of himself, he doesn't experience any suicide ideation or shows extreme examples of self harm/putting himself in danger. And what about the part of splitting when he pushes people away after getting scared of becoming too close? He always stays, in the end. Even when he tried so hard not to get attached to Slime. Where's the white splitting? Where's anything, really. I still stand with the headcanon of them having to navigate a hard relationship, with both of them experiencing severe mental issues, but it's not bpd4bpd. Q is my depressed ADHD bitch, who struggles with trauma.>>

Also I'd say Wilbur's heavily autism coded too - as a bonus it does frequently "strengthen" bpd cause of the type of trauma autistic people experience. Q I see as very much ADHD but I also low-key hc him as somewhere on the spectrum too, though I'm not as heavily set on that

Tldr while Wilbur absolutely clearly has some severe mental issues, Quackity's seem (to me at least) to be more easily and consistently explainable by a combination of ADHD (maybe low support needs autism) and some (pretty damn severe (canonically - looking mainly at all the abandonment + sa hints)) trauma

Was musing on how the identity reveals in Duchess and M-Trio would look from an outsider perspective.

Like with the latter, it may not be noticed too much. Some observers note the team seems a little awkward. Maybe they are seen bickering in an Akuma battle a bit more than usual. But mostly people just figure its some growing pains stuff and will pass.

My rationale here being that despite Nino's history with Chloe & deeming her a brat he did still have her as part of group stuff he was in charge of. Meanwhile Alya may dislike her but she lacks any significant history with her beyond "Is a dick to my friend."

So a lot of it is more like "OK fine, she's not a bad bee but why was she picked?" & generally trying to get used to the idea.

Duchess & Ladybug however, that is much more obvious.

Cos as @generalluxun said both Chloe & Marinette tend to yeet affection at their loved one's when they do get physical. & with less 'serious' flirting and both being girls I could easily see them being quite affectionate with each other.

Then it suddenly just stopping.

Suddenly they are always quite far apart Suddenly Duchess is a lot less cocky and chatty & Ladybug is even more all business. Suddenly Duchess is a lot ore risk tasking and self destructive in battles & even more inclined to fawn though be it at a distance on her partner & do as she's told. Possibly to the point where it risks getting her really hurt & leads to a sort of:

"Isn't this what you want?"

"Just because- Just... Stop getting yourself hurt over this!"

Most people think Duchess chose to shoot her shot and got rejected. Or that there was some big dramatic unseen confrontation with a villain and someone had to make a call and its damaged the partnership.

Oh yeah no like

In M-Trio, there's a combination of like. Nino doesn't particularly /like/ Chloé, but they've rarely had direct beef and he's more chill and (unlike Mari) he is very aware that parents can be shitty and kids will act out because of it. So his reaction to Chloé being Queen Bee is pretty easy for him to roll with.

Alya has a slightly trickier time with it because she's very ride or die with Mari and was already projecting her own experiences with other bully types on Chloé. But she's also equally ride or die with Queen Bee and while it takes her a minute to really connect the two and connect like. She'll look at something 'Chloé' says that usually would be taken as insult because oh she's just a mean bully but actively shift her perspective to think of 'Queen Bee' saying it and realizing that a solid chunk of Chloé's words are just her being bad with people and not really knowing how things should work(granted she's also often trying to be mean, but there's plenty where she's just. Stating something. Or trying to express her dislike/displeasure. And it comes out so wrong that people get offended.) So yeah it trips her up but it takes a minute.

Meanwhile in Duchess Noire:

Mari's whole black and white mentality gets absolutely shattered with a fucking cannon. Because 'Chloé' is 'bad' but 'Duchess' is 'good' and she surely can't be both 'good' and 'bad'...... right?

And it takes. It takes a lot of unpacking. And for her hearing C/DN say something she's always imagining the other and how she'd interpret them saying it and it's driving her goddamn nuts because no that's that's not right something has to be going on here one of these has to be fake.

On the flipside, Chloé completely click that Mari and LB are the same person. But now she's just like 'god you're so fucking perfect and I'm afraid of rejection let's do whatever to please you and make you like me!'

Okay so something happened in the Honkai Star Rail community that really bothered me and I'm trying to put into words what makes me so upset about it.

So Hoyoverse recently hired a new voice actor named Chris Niosi to voice one of their new characters. He is no longer voicing this character. The reason he is no longer voicing this character is because a bunch of people found out that in 2019 Niosi released a shitty internet apology for being abusive to people in his personal life in response to callout posts on Twitter and Tumblr. During this time he also violated an NDA about a role he played in Fire Emblem 3 Houses, and was replaced with Zach Aguilar. He did not face any criminal charges for this behavior, but it is a thing that happened. Naturally people are upset about this and kept asking for him to be fired, and some VA's stood up for him claiming he'd changed, and fans began to lash out against them too. Niosi ended up resigning, and Hoyoverse will hire a new voice actor.

So far, it seems this controversy has not affected his work. Since 2019 he's played Reigen Arataka in Season 3 of Mob Psycho 100 and was an NPC in Genshin Impact.

Now I have a few problems with the community reaction to all this:

Problem number 1: I spent way too much time in the Dream SMP fandom, and have heard way too much bullshit about people being abusers in their personal lives to be ok with any of this. Like part of the reason Dream SMP was so awful is that every other week there would be a new post along the lines of "Dream is the Worst! Here are 7 Heavily Censored Screenshots To Prove Why!" This stuff instantly activates my "I don't like this" senses, I have a very bad reaction to these things.

Problem Number 2: He's a fucking actor. Just because he now has a bit of fame in the community doesn't mean he's somehow more worthy of criticism than he was before. Hell, he still has work in the industry. Just go look up his IMDB. The only reason it matters more in Star Rail is because a lot of the Hoyoverse VA's make extra money off of being Hoyoverse VA's, like how Dan Heng's VA gets the other Star Rail VA's together to do music covers. Even then, he's WORKED WITH HOYOVERSE BEFORE. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT HE'S NOW VOICING A PLAYABLE CHARACTER INSTEAD OF AN NPC.

Problem number 3: Personally, I don't see what online abuse allegations from 2019 have to do with his role as a Voice Actor. Would working at McDonald's or in a less flashy job stop him from hurting people? No! Now, if I was hiring him, I would be nervous about that NDA violation, or that the abuse allegations might flare up into a PR disaster (like they ACTUALLY DID). I might not hire him for a major role. I might take concerns about his mistreatment of his colleagues more seriously. He might not be a Good Face for my company. But, at the end of the day, he is still a Guy Doing a Job, parasociality be dammned, and not doing This Job will not make anything better for the people he hurt.

(Also your (and my) favorite game has like, one not-pale dude in it and is made by a huge dev team that probably has shitty people in it just because that's what happens when you get a large enough group of people together but like heyyyyy let's all jump onto boogeyman of the week now shall we?)

(now, concerns about parasociality I do respect. Hoyoverse VA's are VERY parasocial, and tend to make a bit of extra money from fans by doing cool Hoyoverse VA things. But most people are like ABUSER = BAD AND GROSS and... ugh onto the next slide).

Problem number 4: ABUSER = BAD AND GROSS is a stupid black-and-white mindset and I think everyone who has this mindset should grow the fuck up. People can and do get better, I know people who have gotten better, people who it would be really fucked up of me to stop speaking to because of things I wasn't even alive for, when I don't even know the people who were hurt. People who have already had enough guilt and now need the space to live again. Hell, I've hurt people. You can't divide people into "good" and "bad" and you have to make room for change because if you do not you will hurt someone badly and that mindset will either break you with guilt or turn you into one of the "bad" people without even realizing it. (i reblogged earlier a comic about this exact phenomenon go read it)

At the end of the day I do think it was a good thing Niosi resigned because jesus fucking christ this was a PR disaster, and I would have hated to see him do something like Elliot Ghindi and use the parasociality of Hoyoverse fans to hurt more people (which is just a possibility, not something Niosi has actually done), but I don't think the internet Hate Mob was a good thing. I think bringing up someone's irrelevant personal details into their work life is a universally bad thing and even though he's a semi-public figure, nobody's private life should be exposed like that. There are court systems for a Fucking Reason and I know that they are flawed but also I genuinely believe that this whole internet tradition of making "callout posts" and stuff is incredibly toxic and abusive and I don't want it to keep happening in the fandoms I'm in.

ok well fuck now I'm thinking about new haven wards !!!! specifically like. how would their appearances differ from what we know in pd to in. worm world. like AS FAR AS I KNOW . with my somewhat limited knowledge. there are no fucking ELVES in worm. so virions just got. normal ears . but what else is different !!!! when condi first described vyncent in s1 he actually said he had black hair. so i think it might be cool to make his hair darker more of a natural color. maybe shitty box dye purple with black roots or something. proabably permanent bags under his eyes because he feels like he always has to keep watch for something (it's hard to get much rest at night when you're by yourself in an unfamiliar place and spend your waking hours making potential enemies out of other capes). I hate it when people draw characters with WAY darker skin than they really have... like, there's a particular fandom that I'm in, where the main character is played by a mixed race actor with pretty light skin, and people draw him the color of chocolate all the time. Nothing wrong with that skin color, of course, but isn't it kinda racist to look at a guy and say "ok, he's not white so he's gotta be BROWN" to the point where it doesn't even look like the actor? Is the real life person just not brown enough? I dunno, it just weirds me out.

I wonder if it comes from a place of fan artists not feeling confident about their abilities to draw distinctive facial features. So they worry that the accurate skin tone will cause people to accuse them of "whitewashing". 🙁 I get that, if so. It's just a shame that fan communities can be so awful.

I read a lot of Yuri on Ice fanfic and it always drives me up the wall when writers describe Yuuri as having darker skin than Victor. Look at these two

They have the exact same skin color. You'd have to go into photoshop and search around with the color picker to find a different shade on their faces.

It's like they can't admit that Japanese people can have pale skin because in their woke brains everyone is separated into White People--Evil, Bad, Pale Devils, and People of Color--Oppressed, Dark Skinned, Perfect. And when they're confronted with a "POC" that has light skin, they can't handle it.

(these are the same people who though Chris Pratt tanning for Jurassic World was him trying to "look black", so we're not dealing with a lot of brainpower here)

I do think a lot of what you're talking about comes from being scared of being accused of whitewashing, because fandoms are super toxic about any character appearing even a shade lighter than they're supposed to be. But I also think at least some of it comes from people not being able to deal with the fact that sometimes non-white people have pale skin. Especially when the characters are animated. They see darkening the skin as "correcting" or "fixing" the character. It's super racist, and really exposes how much dark skin is almost fetish-like for them.

And honestly, when it's a real mixed race actor? It's doubly shitty. Mixed race people deal with a lot of stigma from within their communities and without. "Too black for the whites, too white for the blacks" is a common sentiment among Americans with mixed racial heritage. For fandoms, who love to act like they're super "anti-racist" and "allies", darkening a real person's skin in their fan art shows that they don't even know what racism is. It's just the sad state of modern fandom.

Thankfully, most medium to large fandoms seem to have groups that aren't like this, and they're usually not that hard to find.

It's not a funny ha ha baby man needs a diaper moment, it's someone in old age who suffers from incontinence. Is he a really horrifically shitty and bigoted person? Yes. But just cause the villain needs a wheelchair doesn't mean your a-ok to suddenly start calling them a vegetable or a cripple or joking about them getting dumped out their wheelchair and laughing at their helplessness. When you make fun of one person for having incontinence, you make fun of them all and many have disabilities.

the modern cover (i assume). i like the watercolor and how it's not too busy but there's still a discernable image (unlike a CERTAIN cover i just discussed...🙄). the font kind of fucks up the whole thing though. it doesn't match the vibes of the book at all. it's very new-adult-romance and just feels off. because yeah technically the book is about new adults and their relationship drama but it's not this...cute.

the uk cover (?). the quality of this image sucks but i literally could only find it on abebooks.co.uk so. it's not bad, just really busy. the font has a shadow so it can be readable but that makes it feel even more cluttered. i like how the angel statue makes an appearance, but all the colors and how bright it is just makes it feel like a little too much.

the color burned one. honestly while i like the vibes i'm not quite sure who this lady is supposed to be. that looks like a wing so she's probably the white angel statue, but she looks too human. and angels aren't different colors like that. i like how this is simple and black, very classy. but ultimately it doesn't really make a lot of sense.

the grey one. this is simple, but nice. it's dark but with light shining behind the house--a nice balance of hardships but also hope, which fits the story. there's a swingset, which makes sense given the story is about growing up, in a sense. and there might have been a swingset at the actual house in the book. can't remember. the font is clean. a little sci-fi/futuristic for my taste but that's alright i guess. this is the cover i have. i guess i should be lucky it's not one of the previous ones but i really wish i had the next one...

the first edition. look it's classy. it's gothic. the angel is there. the sky looks like it could be ohio or nyc. there's powerlines. the font is stylish but not over the top. it's not too bright. it's slaying. one of my favorite things about this cover is how it emphasizes the angel, because the book itself was written around michael cunningham's seminal short story "white angel" which i have talked about a lot on this blog. it also is in a similar pose to the actual angel statue it was based on, the black angel of iowa city (shown below). i'm a fan. i wish i had this cover soooo bad<333

I know this topic is really stale but for some reason I still see people or maybe I'm unfortunately on tiktok weighing in on the whole Sel-Hailey fight. Surprisingly though, A LOT of people have come forward to defend Hailey. No I don't mean trying to act like she's their queen, rather just pointing how this whole bullshit was Selena's fault and Hailey was innocent on this specific feud. I'm surprised considering Hailey's own reputation on the black community, but even among my friends (I'm biracial to be clear and I barely pay attention to those 3) they were pointing out how Hailey is innocent in this battle.

Ok anyway, my question is. I wonder why more people who are mostly locals or not even fans of any of those 3 have come to defend Hailey or on a lesser scale point out how this is a product of pure misogyny alone. Compared to say, when Olivia Wilde was the subject of a stan related witchhunt. I'm no fan of Olivia by any means and I don't care about her, Harry or Jason, but I did remember wondering why Shia was getting a redemption arc while Olivia was being treated as worse than him. While she's an ass for hiring him in the first place, Shia is the abuser here.

I'm gonna put a disclaimer that I'm no psychologist or idk anthropologist to act like I have some scientific or a deeper analytical answer to this. I'm gonna go based on how I view the two situtations, how I reacted to both, and how people I know or on my immediate circle reacted.

I'm not gonna start with the harries, I think it's pretty clear you should not look at anyone who's a stan or has a very subjective bias to get opinions on a person. Rather, I'll go with the stuff Olivia has "done" and when the hunt leaked outside of the stans

A lot the Olivia bashing went out of hand that's true. She does not deserve to be viewed worse than Shia or be subject of any misogynystic attacks. I refrained from a lot of the conversation because people were no longer focused on the shitty thing Olivia has done that warrants some well-deserved criticisms or even annoyance, but rather stans using this as a justification to be misogynystic.

But honestly for me, why I was less keen on "defending" Olivia was because she ultimately used Shia as a prop to make her seem like a feminist queen, starting with her profiting of FKA Twig's abuse. Then as the Shia drama began and all the way to the end of the dwd promo actually, it's not even enough that she wants to get rid of the drama she wants to be absolved from the things she's done and someone gotta tell her that's not the women's empowerment move she thinks. Like girl, no matter what Shia had a well-known history of being abusive and being an ass. The fact that you even hired him, you're not exactly the ally of the people you think you are. And you know what, I would still criticize her, but I would be less bothered if she wasn't so keen on making herself like some groundbreaking feminist. It's annoying because I REALLY REALLY hate hypocrites and people who tout activism as some brand when they don't have the morals to back it up. It's also downright insulting profiting off another woman, moreso a black woman's abuse like that, when it's clear from actions and words your feminism is white feminism.

Fast forward to the Shia video, it reminds me of people willing to look the other way for this guy and she's begging him to stay and her condescending tone to Flo. NO. But really it's the former that irks me so much because Shia is KNOWN ABUSIVE ASS and you can't gaslight me to believing you hired him but you're the embodiment of women's rights and kindness. BUT, it was disturbing she got more lashing than Shia did and you saw people using that video to give Shia a redemption arc. I also note that as much as she's an ass, from this situation that's just as she is, an ass. But the thing that seals it for me is she just doesn't stop talking. It's ok if she wants to defend herself on things she should be defending herself from. I would support herself on that. It ain't ok when you're gonna try to rewrite history and act like you weren't the one touting this scene's problematic/borderline rape scenes as sexual breakthrough for cinema. You can't complain and say you're not gonna feed drama, and the next sentence or action you're gonna feed drama. I'm gonna defend her on the attacks she doesn't deserve, but I'm not gonna tolerate when a bitch tries to rewrite history and absolve their faults. With Hailey here's the thing. The first difference with her and the Olivia situation is that she did nothing to prompt this. She's done nothing in the recent years, unless you're trying to reach super hard, to provoke Selena starting this stupid witchhunt. It's incredibly dumb if you're a stan trying to use things that happened 7 or more so years ago or aka when she was a stupid teenager to justify that, especially when they both have tried to quash any drama like a few months prior to this. And the annoying part is how people try to go social justice route when that's just your justification to join a witchhunt because people love having a new woman to attack and make viral tiktok videos about. I have a hard time believing when most stans would turn the other way OR be hypocritical if a celeb they like does the same problematic shit Hailey did or is doing.

The second difference, she's not responding to it. She hasn't done a victim off or made some clarificatory video or anything to fight back. She's going on like nothing's happening, we don't know how she feels, but she's not doing anything for this drama. It would be different for me if Hailey tried to rewrite that she was never at any point being racist or do whatever Olivia did and try to make it look like she's never done anything wrong in her life. Hailey is problematic in her own right and her being the product of a witch hunt doesn't erase that. But in this specific feud, she's innocent and she hasn't responded in anyway right now that makes that point moot. It's a crucial difference because Olivia had her share of adding drama or the conversation around it so unsurprisingly people kept talking about it, whereas Hailey hasn't done anything to further it and the drama kept going on and on that it's obvious this is just plainly rooted on people wanting another woman to hunt.

Writer: I don't recall telling anyone to put up with it but I do recall suggesting a more effective solution to a small part of it. C took me a minute to think some stuff over though, the argument is certainly valid, however I do have a couple counter points I'd like to make. First is that, based on the words of the post also being racist towards whites, would it still be OK for you two to tell someone who's even partially white to shut up? Your argument is valid so long as you adhear to it yourself, yet you're not.

Point 2 is more complex and it's taking on the issue of racism, all racism, as a whole. For instance, taking your argument to the extreme, if someone were to call an Asian a slur and their response was violence, would I or anyone else not Asian still be unable to have an opinion on that? For people to gain a thorough understanding of racism, they will eventually be forced to have an opinion on how a race, all races, react to facing racism.

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from a fan of white people. The current state of multiple governments, the billionaires who run things, a lot of it is shitty people who are also white, and I'd happily see them put on trial. In a similar fashion I'd also like to see the Chinese and NK people have governments they don't need to fear either. The only race I'm aware of that doesn't have many problems with their government/s are native Americans and they don't even get to be recognized as full fledged nations by the rest of the world last I checked. So yeah, a lot is wrong in the world, but no one's going to be able to fix a problem like racism if nobody is allowed to view it as a whole. I mean hell, there's STILL white people getting conned into being racists with arguments revolving around the instances of black on white violence, and I sure as hell think an Asian is perfectly in their right to call them stupid for it

if you want to be a "true crime fan" you have to actively be critically considering WHO you're listening to on podcasts or reading articles by, WHAT types of victims they focus on, HOW they present the crimes.

I have consumed a LOT of True Crime podcasts over the past years bc I'm Like That TM but I have had to actively sift through podcasts to find ones I feel morally ok with engaging with. Here's what I look at when considering whether the podcast and the podcasters are ppl I want to listen to and support:

Is it a big joke to them? An oooo spooky scary story to them, a spectacle rather than something real that actually happened? Are they there to play up the, as mentioned above, Missing White Woman Syndrome? Do they talk about crimes against people who are not White? Who are not 'acceptable' to mainstream society? Do they talk about the criminals like they're larger than life, like they're someone to have grudging respect for, like they're some sort of mythical legendary figure? Do they actually talk about victims, or are victims just there as stage dressing for talking about the perpetrators?

Do they talk about the justice system and issues within it? Do they call out police inaction, police incompetence, etc when talking about cases?

Are they actively seeking out cases that are less known, where crimes are perpetrated against ppl society doesn't like to think about or feels comfortable ignoring? Do they respect ppl with mental health issues? Do they respect neurodivergent ppl?

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE THEY OUTSIDE OF THE PODCAST? Yeah, back in the day I listened to Sword & Scale, created and hosted by Mike Boudet. Guess what! Guys a total skeevy shitbag asshole! Don't support the show y'all! He was booted a while back, but now he's hosting again. WTF!

I have a TEENY TINY amoutn of true crime podcasts I can ACTUALLY recommend, and quite a few I'd say to stay away from. If you're someone looking to listen to true crime podcasts and want to steer away from the shitty ones, there's some suggestions below the read more:

SUGGESTED:

Obscura: A True Crime Podcast - handles some rough subject matter, has a "Black Label" series that tackles even rougher subjects. It's a 'narrative approach' podcast, where the events are presented as a sorta story, but not like a "fantastical tale", it's a bit more respectful than that. Host seems like a decent fella. The ambiance is like, sitting around a campfire, but it's definitely not a 'spooky campfire stories' thing.

True Crime Garage - One of my long time faves, not for everyone, it's a more casual 'talking about the crime' podcast, but it does delve into the crimes, and does a good job focusing on victims rather than the perpetrators. The hosts are decent guys, they're respectful of pretty much everyone. Nick is the sorta 'main' host, The Captain is the guy who adds commentary and other additional info (and also calls jerks out when he sees them). One thing to note - they do lean towards appreciating the police, BUT the caveat is that when the police and/or legal system messes up they call it out, and they do try to talk about issues of the legal system.

Morbidology - Another FAVE of mine, Emily G. Thompson hosts this podcast. She also has written some very good books. Her approach is very respectful, fact based, and in depth. No frills here, if you want to listen to a podcast that just gives it to you straight, and doesn't make it all into some sort of 'fun' narrative, here you go.

Generation Why - Pretty ok. I say that because it is probably the most 'casual' of all of the podcasts I still listen to, and even that is rarely these days. If you're not a fan of "two guys just chat about true crime" you won't like it so skip it.

Already Gone - Nina Innsted is the host here and she really does a good job on this podcast, what I really liked about this one is that she does try to find lesser known crimes, instead of focusing on the big sensational things.

True Crime Sweden - podcast series focused on crimes in Sweden. Handled well, presented well, and brings light to cases that frankly many ppl just haven't heard about.

Canadian True Crime - I haven't listened to this one in a while, but I know that when I was listening regularly the host was making a point to talk about not only lesser known crimes, but also crimes involving the indigenous people in Canada which is a HUGE issue that honestly needs to be brought to light much more often. Respectful and doesn't do the sensationalization thing either.

I GUESS THESE ARE OKAY?

Court Junkie - despite having 'junkie' in the title, it's not a bad one really. Focuses mainly on court cases, and court transcripts.

They Walk Among Us UK True Crime - can be a little sensationalist, but is good.

Going West - If you don't want to listen to a conversation between two people about true crime cases, with their opinions somewhat included, don't listen to this. If you want to chill this one's ok.

TRUST ME JUST DON"T:

Crime Junkie - just, i mean look at that title. Look at it. You should know why you shouldn't, but if you don't get it - every crime is treated like a fun shocking story! I mean, they do talk about it as a crime, but the feel is just very....it's a no.

Corpus Delicti - it's not baaad it's just... too like, poppy? I don't know how to say it. Not bubbly, but bubbly. Like, carbonation that's stopped fizzing but you can still see the bubbles. It borders on being a bit too into the 'shocking crime whooooo" narration.

I thought I'd have more but honestly I've stopped listening to everything except True Crime Garage, Obscura, and Morbidology at this point. Part of it is how some podcasts approach the subject. Part of it is that a lot of podcasts are just all talking about the same things, or really going hard on the sensational stories to draw in listeners and not touching much of anything else.

I was making a post defending her outfit but i realized that yeah it would better change everything.

But! The idea itself is nice, and I've seen it done well many times. I think in this case, it's more about a failed styling attempt

(Tho i understand that from the perspective of a high fashion magazine on the 2000s, this outfit is sacrilegious)

First: Change the shirt to a white one because its too blue with the blue sweater. A white shirt would bring more contrast and variation, and it would be easier to the eyes. It would be more fun! Idk how to word it lolol

Second: change the sweater to a more oversized one. The one she is wearing is ill-fitting, so it makes an anxious and awkward impression.

Third: The skirt. Ok. Look. At first i thought it was fine, and yeah it foes depends on how its stylized and the vision of the look! But either dont really apply to Andy cuz she lacks both. And now i dont really like it. It looks ugly, and the ill-fitting blue sweater prevents me from re-imagining it.

But! I found some pics of similar looks on pinterest and one of them do have a blue sweater! So yeah something akin to those can work out

I think the biggest issue with Andy's skirt is that although on first look its fine, if you stop to think about it, the form and stamp and how is used doesn't work well at all with the other pieces. ESPECIALLY with the sweater. So change it to any of the above skirts, esp the last one and it will be fine.

(I just want to add that the og skirt is innocent. It can go well with more alt vintage styles, but again, the wearer and how is wearered matters a lot.

Also also ik the movie is in 2000s so my opinions on this is very biased. I know shit abt USAian 00s fashion culture aside from y2k and punk scenes)

4: The highstocks. Since im making a point of maintaining the same idea without excluding any piece of the look, rather than leaving them out i think its better to either 1. Change it to white stocks or 2. Change it to those somewhat transparent stocks. But considering that Andy is def going to a more "conservative" look here, it would make more sense to make her use white stocks.

5: Her shoes is ugly. I dont like it. Any hope for the original look is destroyed the moment you look at her shoes. Since current Andy doesn't seems to like high heels, then maybe wearing boots or those more cute-looking, lolita type shoes would the best. But considering her character and environment and time, boots would make more sense. More specifically, black boots!

And thats it. I dont want to justify her colleagues/boss's mean remarks, its shitty nonetheless, but they do have a point. Andy do work for a prestigious/elite fashion magazine and dressing better due to that is important, because as the assistant of the editor in chief, she is part of the magazine's face.

So like. Girl sorry i cant defend your outfit but to give your a credit your workplace is shitty.
