I think one of the things that irks me about Leshawna’s treatment in both fandom and canon is that despite being one of the driving forces in Island in the extent of Gwen, Heather and provided more in terms of plot and character interactions, Leshawna is never seen as a character that is desirable despite her consistent sexualization just from the way she’s drawn.

While a lot if not all major female characters’ arcs being tied to just her proximity to a man is absolutely problematic, the fact that Leshawna doesn’t receive even that attention in canon is a way to other her from the thin, non-black girls who receive the attention of a boy who spends time with her, builds a rapport even if antagonistic at first and is seen as a guy on the girl’s level in terms of looks and character- in short the coupling means something to the narrative. Leshawna gets harassed by said guy once in the opening and then only spends one episode where she’s not even the central focus to her OWN romance and it’s with a guy who fetishizes her and we spent this entire season showing how utterly unattractive/gross/boring he is and at no point does Harold show an inkling of respect for her as a person and there’s no justification for their relationship because it clearly didn’t matter to the writers.

Leshawna is sexualized without being seen as a being who’s worth being with and serves often in fic as a supportive character to white character’s romantic escapades but never her *own*. The joke of Lesharold were supposed to find in the relationship in my opinion is that it’s supposed to be funny that the only black woman in the Gen 1 cast has to settle for just being shoved together with a guy almost everyone has a lesser opinion of. That it’s funny that Leshawna does not get a real meet cute or a slow development, a boy showing open interest in her and developing a crush, finding common interests or challenging each other’s point of views in an attractive way or even something simple as the guy trying but failing to impress the girl until later down the line- all things other girls in the series got who were able to cherry pick who they wanted while Leshawna got the scraps, the boy that it’s a joke for her to be with.

Anyway, more Leshawna gifs where she’s seen as not just a laundry list of black women tropes but as someone with her own agency and beauty and one of the girls with a relationship equal to the main girls’ and not with people who mistreat her with misogynoir like Heather and Harold and put Leshawna in more ships and also how she is the best social player in TD bar none!

The derailment of and framing of Courtney post-first season as hyper aggressive, always seeking attention or a ‘free ride’ (the show literally framed her rightfully coming back to the show after she was unfairly voted off as a bad thing even though all the contestants hate Chris for being a sadist to them but they side with him including her then boyfriend???) has so many undertones of not only misogyny but a combination of misogyny and racist undertones specifically to Latina and Asian women and the creators catering to an entire subculture of fandom who shipped Duncan with someone similar to him i.e. not only punk/goth aesthetic but also as pale as him is. A conversation the fandom should have when it comes to Courtney more and how a lot of Courtney’s anger thats either justified is seen as her being an aggressive bitch or comically overplayed to villainize her.

The ‘downfall’ of Courtney is always talked about but you can’t talk about how Courtney going from to someone Type-A and all about the competition and who’s biggest flaw is being a stick in the mud and a know it all to bargaining with her cast mates’ lives and trashing a hotel room like a ravenous beast without talking about the racism in Courtney’s character imo. ‘Why did they make Courtney super mean and emotionally/physically abusive to Duncan-‘ racism (and tagging on behavior she did BEFORE they were dating because they were lazy). ‘Why did they favor Gwuncan over Duncney besides the scenes and pivot to them-‘ racism since they were the only prominent interracial canon relationship in the show (Aleheather hadn’t been conceived yet and Lesharold was never treated the same as Gwen or Gidgette lbr). ‘Why did she make the list-‘ La toxica stereotype!!! A real trope that if you look up the definition shows how Courtney acted to a T in Action. They played it completely straight with Courtney in Action and no one talks about it and she deserves so much better!

(Side note but I have no issue with Gwen and she’s actually my fave so when I say ‘people shipped Gwuncan because they saw they were similar’, it wasn’t just their brief banters in Island and horror movies and pranking in common but also their race. Not bashing her but bashing white fans who hate interracial relationships with their white crush.)

Yeah yeah tdi writers when it comes to female characters could be better but can we please focus on the fandom? Y’all have no excuse as to how you treat these characters!!!

Hello some of the best written and intriguing characters are female, some of the best dynamics include females but y’all are too busy with your male characters and male ships and your internalised misogyny I mean what who said that???

But fr to go onto some of my most hated things in the fandom because I’m in a whingey mood and want to complain and this blog is great if it’s okay I’m gonna dump these here;

Courtney haters need to SHUT UPPPPPPP!!!! I don’t care if you think she’s badly written she’s not and especially not for tdi standards y’all just want to complain about an interesting female character there’s sooo much to her you can just dig into it’s delicious I love her!! And yet she’s still antagonised by the fandom??? I’m not gonna act like she did no wrong and wasn’t the villain because hello did we see action but it’s more nuanced that her being annoying and evil! Y’all just need to look at her more!!!

Svetlana is ALWAYS neglected by the tdi fandom hello she’s one of the alters we see the most yet everyone hates her!! Why!! She’s not my favourite sure I prefer Vito, Manitoba and maybe Mal maybe but come on! She’s a part of the gang too stop ignoring her!!!

People who hc male characters as misogynistic are icky stop itttttt!!! It’s not fun!!!! I have more to talk about this later but I hateee when people say that male characters are misogynistic when either they’re clearly not or they make such a deal of it cough Ezekiel. I’m fine with it being a joke once again I will make fun of Ezekiel till the day I die but when people low-key make the male characters misogynistic it’s like why! Especially when it’s male fans sorry had to be said.

Can we please not ignore platonic male and female friendships pretty please!!!!! We saw how many of the male and male friendships were fake and caved in on themselves we saw the downfall of the guys alliance why do we act like it’s only the females?? I swear the male and female friendships are the only normal ones in the show bar like Gwen and Duncan because they had to do that but hello we all love a bit of DJ and Heather why do we act like we don’t???

The way tdi fans treat the male x male relationships compared to the female x female relationships is soo gross leave them alone please! They can be just as good!!! You don’t believe me well gwourtney has just as much potential as any male x male relationship but y’all don’t want to hear that! And they’re all so fun hello?? Mkulia did more for the homosexuals than anything pride ever did (jokes). The way y’all treat Dawn… sighs. She’s not some cute little garden fairy especially not after tdi she definitely doxxes people on Reddit if they’ve wronged her she definitely leaked Scott’s ip address after tdi. Like yeah she’s nice and a good person and likes animals but let her have fun too please

The way roti fans treat zoey is despicable. They treat her either likes she’s the devil and evil and poor little Mike zoey is so hypocritical and evil and mean, or they treat her like she’s a two dimensional piece of cardboard. Didn’t want to say this but she had some of if not the funniest lines in roti. Yeah she sucked in AS but everyone did and im predicting people treated her like this before AS even came out.

Uh TL;DR treat the female characters like how you treat the males please they’re not that different you just hate women.

Uh take this all with a pinch of salt if you do any of this you don’t hate women im just being hyperbolic but there is clearly some issues with the way you view women if you do any of this. Sorry it’s true I’m sending anonymously because I fear this will strike a nerve.

how total drama failed bridgette

now I was never that bug a fan of bridgette but rewatching the series she's grown on me but I felt like talking about how the show never gave her much to do other than being defined by her boyfriend.

even though in island her main plot is her romance with geoff we still get to see alot of her personality and her freindships with other people without it having anything to do with him. she is depicted as a outgoing, clumsy but fierce girl who stands for what's right. she makes freindships with the other girls (more notably courtney) and is seen as the chill one. Her scenes are a breath of fresh air from the dramatic plots we get to see throughout most of the season.

however the island special is the first instance where she's mainly just seen as "geoffs gf". she is just making out with him and the same thing in action. atleast geoff has his "captian hollywood" arc but she is left to having to make him normal again. we still get her kind personality but it's usually never the centre I'd her character. geoff is.

in world tour she is finally given the chance to shine now that her boyfriend is not participating, right? wrong. her main story has to do with GEOFF. In world tour her story is basically trying to resist alejandro and then not being able to do it and then making up with geoff. the thing is we don't even get to see much if her personality on the main show since her screen time is just with alejandro or talking with geoff and she's usually just nervous and agitated. geoff however gets to have his aftermath plot with blainley where they have a rivalry with eachother.

now you may be thinking, why are you only talking about bridgette the same thing happens to geoff too. but no it doesn't. unlike bridgette his character is not seen as "bridgettes bf" its seem as chill himbo party dude. even in the season where bridgette is not present she has one mention and he wins the season!

it's unfair how her character became "geoffs gf" and she deserves a redemption! (I liked how the promos for tda made it seem like she would have a rivalry with duncan they could've built on that)

I really understand people not liking Courtney (still people with bad taste), but the way some of them treat her is so disturbing.

Like, they always treat like she killed Duncan and Gwen with an axe or something, and the way they always disregard her feelings in situations where she had ALL the right to have (her getting CHEATED on, her being UNFAIRLY eliminated) is... Just terrifying.

The Gwoey friendship is so cute and is the only good thing to come out of All-stars for Zoey (with Gwen we got the Gwortney friendship until that crashed and burned so I sort of count that.) I get it it is kind of funny that mary and Harold look so alike but can we not say that Mary IS Harold???

I do like the transfem Harold headcanon but if we could not take one of the only female characters that doesn’t look exactly like the others and say that she’s just a transfem character we knew when they were presenting as a guy after transitioning that’s really weird

(Before you get it twisted this is not bashing the trans Harold headcanon this is saying we should now associate girls who don’t fit the beauty standard with trans women. That’s misogynistic and transphobic.)
