Aromantic Flag History
With all the arophobes coming out of the woodworks, I want to share some aromantic history to hopefully brighten your day.
The first use of the term "aromantic" appeared in an AVEN thread in June of 2005. A couple years later, a flag was created by the National Coalition for Aromantic Visibility. It looked like this:
Tumblr media
Green symbolized aromanticism, as green is the opposite of red, and red is sometimes seen as a symbol of romance. Yellow represented platonic love. Orange represented lithromanticism, and black represented anyone who fell under the greyromantic range.
At some point, the aromantic community decided it was time for a change, and thus came the second flag. Created by Cameron Whimsy, this one looks a lot more familiar to the one we see nowadays:
Tumblr media
The two greens represent the spectrum of aromantic identities, yellow represents friendship, and grey and black represent the spectrum of sexual identities in the aromantic community.
While this flag wasn't as widely used as the first, it laid the groundwork for the one we'd come to know and love today. At some point, it was pointed out that the yellow stripe caused sensory issues for some individuals, and as such, it was changed to white.
And now we have the modern aromantic flag we all love! Thanks for reading!

random aro!enjolras drabble for pride month
------------
The parade was passing through and Enjolras felt like he was missing something. He wasn't as decked out as his friends; no flag around his back or flower crown in his hair, but he had his shirt off to show his top surgery scars, a "he/him" pin on his lanyard that showed information for Les Amis de l'ABC, and Courfeyrac talked him into wearing a stack of rainbow and trans flag bracelets along his arm. Yet in the place he felt the most at home - being himself with his friends - something wasn't in place.
Enjolras began perusing the stalls and stands that different groups had set up. He had made sure to keep a stack of paper money with him for donations, giving them out to community and local organizations. Les Amis had a stall set up at the Café, but they were all taking turns manning the stall versus enjoying the festivities.
As Enjolras continued walking, a stall caught his eye. The stand had a few flags hanging on it with different shades of purple, green, grey, white, and black. Enjolras recognized the purple ones as the asexual flag, but the green flag caught his eye. He steadied himself and walked over to the stall.
The stall was being operated by two college-age kids, someone who looked to be in their mid-thirties, and an older man with a thick beard. When Enjolras stopped, the man stood up and gave him a smile.
"Hey son," the man said, looking at Enjolras' pin. "What can I help you with? Flags? Pins? Maybe a few zines by these lovely people behind me?"
Enjolras looked around the stall and his eyes fell on the green flags again. "What do the green flags mean?" he asked. "I know the purple is for asexuality, but I don't recognize the green one." He felt his face flush as he asked the question. Enjolras liked to think he was in the loop of all things queer; his friends had so many labels and have taught him so much more than his conservative family taught him, but admittedly he was more aware of political theory than identities.
"Oh!" the man said, smile widening. "It's the aromantic flag." Upon seeing Enjolras' slight look of unrecognition, the man continued. "It means they don't experience romantic attraction. Some people are just aromantic and never experience romantic attraction, some use the term greyromantic because they sometimes feel attraction, feel attraction but to a very low level, or feel somewhere between aromantic and alloromantic, and some use demiromantic because they don't get romantic feelings until a very deep bond is formed." The man pointed at each flag as he talked.
Enjolras stayed quiet for a second. He hadn't realized this was an option. All his friends talked about their crushes and romantic relationships, and while Enjolras enjoyed hearing about it, he never had anything to share, and he wanted to keep it that way.
"How do you know if you're aromantic?" he asked, feeling sheepish.
The man gave him a knowing smile. "It's a process of finding yourself, but sometimes you just know."
Enjolras looked at the little green and grey pins on the table. Everything felt like it was clicking into place. All the years of trying to be in romantic relationships hoping romantic feelings would form and ending up having to break up and losing a friend because he couldn't do it. All the confusion of what he thought were crushes but the idea of being more than friends made his stomach churn. Every time he changed the subject when his parents asked him about settling down because settling down with someone was so foreign to Enjolras in a way he couldn't express. All of it was suddenly a shade of green, calming like summer trees and fresh cut grass.
Enjolras pulled out his wallet and gave the man a few dollars.
"I'll take a pin please."

Happy aromantic spectrum awareness week!
Hello everyone! So since it's officially aro week (a bit late but whatever) I thought it'd be cool to make some content about aromanticism and give some information about it ^^
Before we start, happy aro week to all of my arospec folks and allies who support us through it all. I love you all so much ❤
So, what is Aromanticism?
Aromanticism is a romantic orientation where the individual experiences little to almost no romantic attraction or desire. The term is also often shortened to 'Aro' to refer to people who are aromantic. The opposite to the term is 'Alloromantic', which describes a person who does experience romantic attraction/desires. Aromanticism is a spectrum, and individuals have adopted other more specific labels, such as Aroflux (romantic attraction fluctuates in intensity), Greyromantic (romantic attraction rarely experienced), Demiromantic (romantic attraction only happens when a strong bond has been formed), Aegoromantic (doesn't feel romantic attraction, but likes the idea of romance) and many more that is simply too much to name.
Flag meaning
Tumblr media
The first aromantic flag was published by the National Coalition for aromantic visibility in the early 2010s.
Green: aromanticism
Yellow: platonic love and friendship, because yellow roses represent friendship
Orange: symbolizes lithromanticism because it's between red and yellow
Black: represents a variety of people who fall within a grey-aromantic range.
The flag was later changed as it left out some arospec identities, closely resembled the Rastafarian flag and had a stripe including alloromantics
Tumblr media
The current aromantic flag was made by Cameron Whimsy on 2014. The stripes are as follows:
Green: aromantic spectrum
White: friendship and platonic love
Grey and black: sexuality spectrum
Green is chosen as it's the opposite of red, the color mostly associated with romantic love, and the two shades of green were chosen to represent the aromantic sprectrum.
Other symbols
Arrows are commonly associated with the aromantic spectrum due to aromantic often being shortened to Aro, which is pronounced the same way
Spades are also used, as it's the opposite of hearts and is also associated with the aroace spectrum
A white ring is worn on the middle finger of the left hand (opposite of the black asexual ring)
History
The early online community of aromantic people formed on the Asexual Visibility & Education Network (AVEN) and other social media platforms on the year 2005.
Since then, a community centered around aromanticism was formed online of Arocalypse.com, as well as other social media platforms
To gain wider acceptance and recognition, the Aromantic-spectrum Union for Recognition, Education & Advocacy (AUREA) was formed. This was to increase education on aromanticism and help the aro-spec community gain wider acceptance by the general public. AUREA is also the leading organizer of Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week.
Please let me know if anything is lacking from this post or you know anything else or if there's anything incorrect, please let me know so I can add/edit them to this post! Much thanks! ^^
If you're aromantic and/or an ally, I hope you have an amazing day/night and remember, you're always loved and appreciated in the community even if the phobes around you make it not seem like it. You always have your allies to support you! ^^

Greypunk / Graypunk ( or Greyqueer / Grayqueer )
Greypunk / Greyqueer is a punk / queer term (similar to Genderpunk/Genderfuck, Voidpunk, and many other queer terms) which focuses on those in the "Grey area(s)" of identity- including but not limited to Greygender/Grey agender people, Greyromantics/Greyaros, Greysexuals/Greyaces, Greyplatonics/Greyapls, and anyone else who feels nebulous/"in-between"/vague/undefinable or similar (especially Neurodivergent, Intersex, Androgynous, and GNC folk).
I use "Grey Area" here with the definition of "not readily conforming to a single category or to an existing set of rules" so I don't have to type that out every time. (You don’t have to use that exact wording for your own identity btw)
This concept is intentionally broad and... grey! I will not gatekeep this term to any specific group(s) or label(s) and I think doing so would be antithetical to it's purpose. So please don't do that and if you want to use it go ahead.
Greypunk / Greyqueer is about community, solidarity, and defending your (and others) right to exist in the "Grey area" while also labeling your gender/attraction/etc. in a way that is the most comfortable/true to yourself/your experiences.
It's about rejecting those who try to draw strict lines around your identity and going "fuck you" when they tell you should (or make assumptions about you).
It's about finding joy and comfort your in your identity, respecting that everything isn't "black and white" (or binary/trinary, however you want to phrase it).
Greypunk / Greyqueer was inspired by my anger at many things, but mainly by the attempted exclusion of Greyaros/Greyaces from the terms Aro/Ace/Aroace or even from calling themselves "bi/gay/[insert orientation] aroace" (on the basis that they aren't "strictly"/"pure" Aros/Aces/Aroaces).
See this blog post on "umbrella crunching" here, this summary post with links, this post, this post, this post, this Arocalypse comment, this post, and this other blogpost (with even more links!) for discussion by people more eloquent than me on the above issues.
It was also inspired by the pushback against that exclusionism that I've seen (shoutout to the r/orientedaroaces subreddit!) as well as my experiences as an Aroace Androgynous Intersex person who's fed up with people defining my experiences for me.
The flag uses the same layout as Genderpunk and a few other -punk terms. I choose it for unity and also I think it just looks good. The colors are taken from the different "Grey-" flags. The dark grey to light grey stands for the "grey area", green is for Greyaros as well as Greyapls, the blue is for Greygender people as well as Greyaroaces, and the purple is for Greyaces as well as GNC, Intersex, and androgynous folks.
( Editing this to include Greyqueer as an alternative term for those who prefer it to the -punk suffix. )

Tumblr media
Advenduromantic:
Advenduromantic is a romantic orientation on the aromantic spectrum, derived as a romantic parallel to advendurosexuality. It can be considered a subcategory of the greyromantic umbrella.
Advenduromanticism describes the conditions of infrequent romantic attraction, fading into the background before coming back either suddenly or slowly, which can be triggered by something or just happen. It is also described as being hard to distinguish from platonic attraction. An advenduromantic can experience a crush towards strangers and friends and can have romantic relationships.
Advenduromantic experiences may include:
Relating to some aromantic or grayromantic experiences.
Having only limited experiences with romantic attraction.
Having very brief crushes.
Only getting crushes several years into a friendship.
Not understanding the point of blind dating, speed dating, personal ads, or a generalized desire for a romantic partner who isn't an already-known person.
Being in a relationship without being romantically attracted to that person most of the time.
Like with any romantic orientation, advenduromantic individuals can identify with any sexual orientation. The name comes from the Latin words adventus, meaning arrival, and durum, meaning hard.
Two flags have been created, both by the coiner of the term, lgbt-i-guess this site The first, a red-orange-white-grey-black flag, was made at the same time the term was coined, Jan 13th.

Whats an aromantic flag and why you should include it in your pride posts
disclaimer: i know theres fighting every year about who should and shouldn’t be included in pride posts, this isn’t to argue with people who just hate aspec ppl, this is an informational post. don’t send me bullshit about it
Why should you include aro flags?
many people believe that aromanticism is covered under the asexual flag, so if they include that they’re including aros, however that’s not the case. aro and ace people share the aspec community, but one identity does not fall under the other. It’s less like using the trans flag as an umbrella for all trans and nonbinary people even if there’s a separate nonbinary flag, and more like using the transmasc pride flag to represent all transmascs and transfems. Aros are just not covered under the ace flag because both groups are separate identities. people can be aro and ace but not all aros are ace.
aro is also an incredibly important identity for a lot of people, something we take a lot of pride in. we get relegated to “minor or add on identity” all the time because people keep thinking of us as the -romantic version of asexual. we have multiple terms, multiple flags, and a huge array of different aro experiences, we are not a subset of asexuality and many of us wish for that to be more respected.
last on the reasons of why you should include aros in pride posts is that we have no larger umbrella flag, unless we’re counting the rainbow flag. the aro flag is the umbrella flag for arospec identities. if you don’t include it then we aren’t being included. and this isn’t me telling you you have to include an aro option for everything you make (tho that would be nice) ppl have the right to choose what flags they want to include. but theres been many times when i see people add  flags representing all parts of the community except aro, and then add on smaller more niche flags. i don’t want this to come across as another post like “how dare you include X flag but not Y flag!!!” because i think everyone should have the joy of representation, i just think many people don’t realize they’re even leaving aros out. either through lack of awareness or lack of knowledge on what the aro flag actually is, and that’s what i wanna help with this post.
What even is the aro flag?
Let’s start with what it’s not:
Tumblr media
[ID: a flag with four horizontal stripes. from the top down they are green, yellow, orange and black. End ID]
This was the first proposed aro flag. We do not use it anymore for a couple reasons, the main one is that it resembled another countries flag too closely and was getting confused. I’d think this one would have died out by now but i literally just saw a post include it today.
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with five horizontal stripes. from top to bottom the colors are dark green, light green, yellow, grey, and black. End ID]
This was the second popular aro flag. It is very close to the main aro flag now except the middle stripe is yellow. That stripe was changed due to causing some people sensory problems. This one is sometimes still accidentally used, probably because it looks very close to the main flag, but it’s not the main aro flag either.
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with five horizontal stripes. from top to bottom the colors are black, grey, white, light green, and dark green. End ID]
I’ve actually seen this flag used a lot by people not very knowledgeable about aros. This is a flipped version of the aro flag. I also for the life of me can’t find an example of this but i’ve seen more than once a version that is flipped and removes a stripe of green so it looks like a recolored ace flag. These are pretty common, enough for me to have seen multiple people selling merch with this incorrect flag. I think it comes from people thinking the aro flag is the same as the ace one which does start with black at the top and has only four stripes.
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with seven horizontal stripes. from top to bottom the colors are black, grey, white, green, white, grey, and black. End ID]
Yeah, this is the agender flag, not the aro flag. I see these get mixed up all the time. It’s not hard so see why with similar colors and a white grey black gradient, but as someone who is agender and aro, it kinda gets on my nerves when people mix these up. Also no this is not the same color palette as the aro flag. I’ve seen people make designs labeled as agender/aromantic that just use the agender color palette. The aro flag has two greens and they’re both different than the agender green.
Tumblr media
[ID: Two flags next to each other. The first one has five horizontal stripes. from top to bottom the colors are orange, light orange, white, light blue, dark blue. The second flag has eight horizontal stripes. from top to bottom the colors are dark green, light green, white, grey, black, grey, white, and purple. End ID]
These are two common aroace flag designs. These flags are used by a lot of people and you might see them included in pride posts. These are good flags, however, they should not be used to represent all aros. Including an aroace flag does not mean you’re including all aros and all aces, it means you’re including just aroaces. There’s plenty of aros who aren’t ace and aces who aren’t aro. It’d be like putting a gay trans flag in a post and saying its there to represent all gay and all trans people, when the flag is usually used to represent only people who are both gay and trans. Again, these flags are not bad, and them being included in pride posts is good actually, but they should not be used to represent all aro and all ace people.
Now let’s go over what actually is the aro flag:
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with five horizontal stripes. From top to bottom the colors are dark green, light green, white, grey, and black. End ID]
This is the main aro flag. It’s the one most widely used and recognized. The color meanings are dark green and light green representing the spectrum of aro identities, white meaning friendship, and grey and black representing the spectrum of sexual identities in the aro community.
But wait there’s more!
The aro identity is a spectrum, meaning theres more identities under aromantic, and they have their own flags too. If you really wanna go wild and include some other aro flags heres some more. (this is not a full list of all arospec identities, just some i see around the most. feel free to look into more arospec identities and flags! also all of these definitions are coming from me and my personal knowledge of aro identities, i do not identify as any of these though, only as aromantic, so if i give the wrong definition please tell me so i can fix it!)
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with five horizontal stripes. From top to bottom the colors are dark green, light green, white, yellow, and dark yellow. End ID]
This is the alloaro flag. Alloaros are aros who aren’t ace. They deserve more support and attention because they’re really amazing members of the aro community.
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with five horizontal stripes. From top to bottom the colors are dark green, grey, white, grey, and dark green. End ID]
This is the greyromantic flag. Greyromantic means someone who feels romantic attraction rarely. The term greyromantic is also sometimes used to mean aro identities that still feel some form of romantic attraction.
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with four horizontal stripes. From top to bottom the colors are black, green, aqua, and grey. End ID]
the quoiromantic or WTFromantic flag. It means someone who can’t or doesn’t want to tell the difference between platonic and romantic attraction basically. It’s got a special place in my heart bc i used to id as quoi.
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with five horizontal stripes. From top to bottom the colors are red orange, orange, yellow, white, and black. End ID]
This is the Lithromantic flag. Lithromantic means someone who feels romantic attraction but doesn’t want it reciprocated, or may no longer feel romantic attraction when it is reciprocated.
Tumblr media
[ID: A flag with a black, sideways triangle on the left side pointing right and three horizontal stripes. The first stripe from the top is a thick white stripe, the next stripe is thin and dark green, and the bottom stripe is thick and grey. End ID]
The demiromantic flag. Someone who is demiro doesn’t feel romantic attraction until they have formed a deep emotional connection with someone.
And there’s many more arospec identities!
I hope i’ve helped to clear up some misconceptions about aros and our flags! We’re not under the ace umbrella, we’re our own community. We all have different experiences, different relationships to our identity, and I hope to see more people represent aros this year!
Have a happy pride month!

Week 5 (and last week) of my pride month 2022: plants!
I miscalculated at the beginning of the month and ended up having to come up with two new items for this week but we made it work anyway! Greyromantic cactus, demigender monstera, intersex physalis and quoisexual/quoiromantic hyacinth.
[ID: The first picture shows part of a light purple wall. On the bottom left-hand corner, there is a big grey pot with a monstera in it. Its leaves are light yellow, and their stems go from dark grey in the dirt to white at the tip of the leaves.
On its right there is a piece of furniture in light grey wood. On it, on the left left, there are four small whit cubic flower pots, arranged in two lines. Each of them has small dots, representing the color schemes of the two grey romantic flag : white, black, two shades of green and two shades of grey. In each pot there is a different type of cactus. Each is mainly green, but the two on the bottom are shaded with a darker green. The four cactuses’ thorns are grey and white.
On the right of the cactuses, there is a white round flower pot with a hyacinth in it. Its leaves are two shades of light green, and its flowers are two very close shades of blue, shaded one with white, and the other with light grey. The centers are black.
On its right, there is a single fruit from a physalis. The outside and the stem are yellow, while the actual fruit in the center in purple. Above the piece of furniture, there is a white window through which we can see grass and a blue sky with two white clouds.

Happy pride to you grayromantic polyamorists!  Don’t get it twisted: aro-spec folks including grayromantic (also seen as gray-aromantic, greyromantic, and grey-aromantic) people feel and experience a full spectrum of love and love-feelings. They may feel limited or less frequent romantic attraction, but romantic attraction is merely one sensation in the nebula of -amory. We’re so lucky to have you, grayromantics. Thanks for being your truest you!
~image description below~
[Image Description: A set of 2 square images, placed beside each other. All text is in lowercase letters. In both images the gray-romantic pride flag is used which is a striped flag made up of five colors in the following colors: Green, light gray, white, light grey, green.
Image 1: A single square image with a pastel green background and outlined by a thin black border. All text in this image is centered. At the top of the image in big, bold black letters it reads “happy”, followed by text featuring the colors of the gray-romantic pride flag which reads “grayromantic”, followed by black text which reads “pride.” Beneath the text is an enlarged polycule symbol with the gray-romantic pride flag across the hearts. Under the polycule symbol is smaller, bold black text which reads “to polyamorists who experience romantic attraction rarely and/or with low intensity.” At the bottom of the image is the “@polyamproud” watermark in gray letters.
Image 2: A single square images with a white background. Most of the image is taken up by a big gray-romantic pride flag with a black polycule symbol in the top left of the flag. All text beneath the flag is left-aligned and lowercase letters. Directly beneath the flag in big, bold black letters it reads “grayromantic pride,” followed by the text directly beneath it which is much smaller, thin text which reads “with polycule symbol”. Beneath this text is slightly bigger, bold black text which reads “celebrating grayromantic polyamorists.” At the bottom right of the image is the “@polyamproud” watermark in gray letters.
