As a bisexual male, there is a myriad of double standards. Bisexuality alone is the most isolated orientation, but when you put the roles of masculinity and expectation on a person, the critics are everywhere. “You have to choose.” “But like, you like one more than the other right?” “Oh it’s just a stepping stone.” I get that a lot of the ignorance comes out of trying to understand, but my sexuality is not something that needs to be digestible. We have to do better as a queer community in accepting everyone. We are the first to scream about equality, but so many of us are also the first to cast judgment, hold prejudice and segregate our chosen family based on how toned the body, the color of the skin, the lifestyle, the money, and everything else. Bisexuality was a journey for me. It wasn’t easily found, which says something to me about the visibility that we experience in the LGBTQ community. I was “straight” by default, and then presumably “gay” because I knew I had attraction to men. The issue arose in college when I started experiencing internalized reverse confusion. “I’m gay. The uniqueness in accepting ourselves, is that not every bisexual person has the same orientation. I am pretty 50/50. Some are are 90/10. Some are 40/60. Some people are emotionally queer and physically heterosexual or vice versa. And each and every single one of us are valid. I’m proud to be bisexual. Pride is something we all share. Now the other can be empowering. The other can be something that we use as a rock to build ourselves up and make ourselves stronger. But many people try to convince us that it is what makes us lesser. Weaker. They are wrong. It took me many years to discover what bisexuality could mean to me because of those people.
