One thing you will always hear me talk about is how much support mamas need throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. It can be encouraging and affirming words or actual hands on support. In episode 3 of the Tribe of Suns Podcast we hear how Phenecia’s husband, Troy did skin to skin with his newborn , Nuri after she was born. Research shows that very early skin to skin is beneficial to the baby maintaining their body temperature, which is essential. Babies can lose body heat very quickly because newborns aren’t able to keep themselves warm on their own. Other benefits include: •Baby crying less often •Improved weight gain •Experiencing more stable heartbeat and breathing •Higher blood oxygen levels •Long-term benefits, such as improved brain development and function as well as parental attachment. #birthadvocate #homebirthadvocate #blackmaternalhealthcrisis #birthstory #blackbirthstories #yourbirthmatters #hireablackbirthworker #sacredmotherhood #blackmamasmatter #blackmamas #birthdisparities #birthoutcomes #informedconsent #postpartumdoula #blackdoula #birthyourway #saveoursisters #saveourselves #newpodcastalert #blackpodcaster #birthstoriespodcast #podsincolor #wocpodcasters #dopeblackpodcasts #blackwomenpodcast #birthstories #herstory #homebirthtransfer #nicubaby #skintoskin https://www.instagram.com/p/CFC3E83A9ow/?igshid=sqidjxxg7c78

@kehlani: LA BIRTHING PEOPLE NEED YOU. @iamhaizehawkerosen with @make_repost
・・・
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Martin Luther King Hospital know as MLK Hospital in South LA may be forced to close the Labor & Delivery unit due to state budget cuts. This is the hospital that is closest to Compton, and Watts and is in South Central LA. This is a problem because this unit mostly serves people of color. This was made possible by through a unique funding arrangement with the state. They operate under a midwifery-led model, which has contributed to an incredibly low cesarean rate, especially for the area, and they are providing compassionate, women-centered, evidence-based care. Their absence would create a vacuum in maternal health care in South los Angeles as several hospitals in the area are also closing their labor and delivery units. Los Angeles people, Californians and anyone who gives a damn about the black and brown birth disparities in America, If we raise our voices now in a clear and urgent protest, we can help our leaders keep the promise they made to us when our hospital opened just five short years ago. That promise: that South Central LA would never again be left without a hospital and without access to the kind of care it needs and deserves.

you gotta give credit when it’s due. birthing another being is not light work, no matter how easy a mama can make it look. your body goes through some thangs—major thangs, and having a support system that understands and acknowledges that, is the icing on the cake for a mama that just endured the journey through childbirth. support black women—in all ways. 📸: @imanshumpert #blackhomebirther #homebirth #birthworker #blackhomebirth #birthadvocate #homebirthadvocate #changingthenarrative #maternalhealthadvocate #blackmaternalhealthcrisis #birthstory #blackbirthstories #hireablackbirthworker #tribeofsunspodcast #teyanataylor #blackmotherhood #blackbabas #maternalmortality #blackmamasmatter #blackmamas #birthdisparities #birthoutcomes #informedconsent #postpartumdoula #blackdoula #birthyourway #saveoursisters #saveourselves https://www.instagram.com/p/CE6wVBlALgj/?igshid=j5lblgu9mlig

they did it again!! they had another baby at home. i’m sooo hype for them!! we do this, ya’ll! we birth strong healthy babies at home. 🏠 there is something about a bathroom while you’re in labor. i concur!! Congratulations to to the family!! I’m so sure she is getting all the postpartum support she needs with her mama and her husband by her side. ・・・ Repost from @teyanataylor via @imanshumpert We love you Rue, welcome baby girl @babyruerose 😢😍🌹❤️ At 3:28 am on Sept 6th 2020 Rue Rose 🌹 decided that the baby shower thrown for her and mommy was too lit. She didn’t make the party but she managed to make the next day her birthdate!!! Now...when we buy homes, we always find a bathroom with great energy... but not in a million years would you be able to tell me we’d deliver both of our daughters in a bathroom without the assistance of a hospital! Our newest edition entered the world in the water and came out looking around and ready to explore! A healthy child. A little sister. Another daughter. Black love wins....again. “08.12.2020 Primary Content Advocacy efforts by the Center for Reproductive Rights and its partners helped lead to the enactment of a new law in Georgia that will improve maternal health for mothers. The law extends postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to six months after delivery. Georgia’s maternal mortality rate is more than twice the national average, and the rate for Black women is more than three times the rate for white women. Standard, affordable postpartum care for mothers in every community is needed to improve maternal health and reduce racial disparities. The new law, H.B. 1114, is expected to benefit almost 65,000 Georgia mothers and to particularly benefit Black mothers. Black women in Georgia are about twice as likely as the state’s white women to live in poverty, and more than half of births in Georgia are to low-income women covered by Medicaid. Postpartum care includes help with physical and psychological recovery and well-being, help with infant care and feeding, counseling as needed, and more.” In advocating for the passage of H.B. 1114, Lipscomb worked to convene stakeholders—including policymakers, reproductive justice community members, public health professionals, and medical professionals—to testify at hearings and equip lawmakers with critical information. “The maternal mortality issue was one of the most important issues and budget priorities of the 2020 session,” says state Representative Able Mable Thomas, who has been amplifying the need for legislative action on maternal mortality issues for years. “We must continue to fight for Black mothers who die three to four times more than white mothers at childbirth.” Source: reproductiverights.org #maternalmortality #infantmortality #motherhoodinblack #blackmamasmatter #blackmamas #birthdisparities #birthoutcomes #informedconsent #postpartumdoula #blackdoula #birthyourway #saveoursisters #saveourselves #tribeofsuns #hb1114 #reproductiverights https://www.instagram.com/p/CEF0fuZpkSn/?igshid=1h6ynic5r0eng

To make an informed decision—either informed consent or informed refusal—women need to know the value of waiting for labor to start on its own. In the last weeks of pregnancy, maternal antibodies are passed to the baby—antibodies that will help fight infections in the first days and weeks of life. The baby gains weight and strength, stores iron, and develops more coordinated sucking and swallowing abilities. His lungs mature, and he stores brown fat that will help him maintain body temperature in the first days and weeks following birth. The maturing baby and the aging placenta trigger a prostaglandin increase that softens the cervix in readiness for effacement and dilatation. A rise in estrogen and a decrease in progesterone increase the uterine sensitivity to oxytocin. The baby moves down into the pelvis. Contractions in the last weeks may start the effacement and dilation of the cervix. A burst of energy helps pregnant women make final preparations, and insomnia prepares them for the start of round-the-clock parenting. Induction alters the process of labor and birth in significant ways. The cervix often needs to be softened before pitocin (synthetic oxytocin) will be effective. Pitocin causes contractions that both peak and become stronger more quickly than naturally occurring contractions. The result is a labor that is more difficult to manage. In addition, the uterine muscle never totally relaxes between contractions, increasing stress on both the uterus and the baby. Because of the increased risk to your uterus and the baby an electronic fetal monitoring is now introduced. Unless there is a clear medical indication that induction of labor will do more good than harm, nature beats science hands down. For both mothers and babies, it is safe and wise to wait patiently until labor begins on its own. we are still out here celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week! 🥰 I found the book that I or my husband bought over 12 years ago when we found out we were expecting our first child. It is a treasured gem that was packed away. It is unfortunately no longer in print, so if you happen to cross paths with one make sure you add it to your library. 💜koya “Breastfeeding is one of the greatest gifts a woman can give her child. It is the perfect food for baby because breastmilk is specially designed for the baby. Breast-feeding promotes womb healing. The uterus is allowed to naturally contract and reduce hemorrhaging. Breast-feeding burns calories, allowing the body to get back in shape faster. Exclusive breast-feeding delays ovulation for most women during the first six months and acts as a natural contraceptive method. However every woman’s body is different. Breast-feeding also benefits the environment. The earth which sustains the African family must be protected. Mothers especially must do their part to protect the mother called Earth.” (Sidenote to my fellow birth workers, birth nerds, inquisitive folk, and life long learners: i have found some very well taken care of books related to pregnancy and birth at goodwill and other resale/thrift stores on various occasions. some books i have to have brand new, or so i tell myself. others i’m fine with buying used.) #blackhomebirther #birthworker #blackhomebirth #birthadvocate #homebirthadvocate #changingthenarrative #maternalhealthadvocate #blackmaternalhealthcrisis #birthstory #birthstories #blackbirthstories #yourbirthmatters #hireablackbirthworker #sacredmotherhood #blackmotherhood #iyaraet #holisticparentingfromthepanafrikanperspective #blackbabas #maternalmortality #infantmortality #motherhoodinblack #blackmamasmatter #birthdisparities #birthoutcomes #informedconsent #postpartumdoula #blackdoula #birthyourway #saveoursisters #saveourselves https://www.instagram.com/p/CEZggDdAhyg/?igshid=1ttaw5w7ajrbi

the loss of any loved one often feels like a gut punch that you didn’t see coming. the loss of a child (i can only imagine) feels a million times worse. because my sisters have been open with me about their birth experiences throughout the years, i have a better understanding of how we can better support them after they have endured such a loss. we will share these stories and more on the Tribe of Suns Podcast—to honor the lives of little ones that we never got to know or were only blessed to know for a short period. what support have you given to a mama that has experienced the loss of a child? #birthworker #blackhomebirth #birthadvocate #homebirthadvocate #changingthenarrative #maternalhealthadvocate #blackmaternalhealthcrisis #birthstory #birthstories #blackbirthstories #yourbirthmatters #hireablackbirthworker #sacredmotherhood #blackmotherhood #infantloss #stillbornstillloved #miscarriagesupport #maternalmortality #infantmortality #motherhoodinblack #blackmamasmatter #blackmamas #birthdisparities #birthoutcomes #postpartumdoula #blackdoula #birthyourway #saveoursisters #saveourselves https://www.instagram.com/p/CEJ6qRtA5s5/?igshid=nzj32a4tnamg
