YELLOW-CRESTED COCKATOO for sale
YELLOW-CRESTED COCKATOO for sale
The Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) is Critically Endangered in the wild. The sulphur-crested cockatoo is one of the largest of the several species of beautiful white cockatoos. It is a different species than the lesser sulphur-crested cockatoo.

Although spectacular in appearance, this huge, active parrot is brilliant, long-lived, and noisy; and it is very challenging to keep as a pet.…

A few people purchase fowls in light of the fact that, in their eyes, they are simpler to think about than for a feline or a canine. The canine needs to head outside and get a lot of activity, the feline needs her space and feathered creatures simply sit in a confine, correct?

Hi! I'm looking into getting a pet bird but all the cages that I've found look cramped. Oh and I'm planning a pair of budgies. I noticed that you have what looks like a nice one. Would you mind my asking where you got it? Or just like recommendations in general?
Thank you so much in advance! I just want a big cage for my future feather babies
Hello! Unfortunately I don't think that they make the kind of cage my budgies have anymore T_T It's a Vision L02, which I can't find anywhere now. There is a Vision L12, but the bar spacing on that one is too wide for budgies (the bars on the L12 are almost an inch apart, and for budgies no more than half an inch is recommended). Fortunately, when it comes to cages, there are a lot more options than there used to be when I first got my birds (almost 10 years ago now)!
Generally speaking, the larger the cage, the better, even for a couple of small birds like budgies. Usually anything that is marketed as a "parakeet cage" or a "budgie cage" is going to be way too small for actual budgies to be happy and healthy in. I've had a lot of luck searching "flight cages" or "finch flight cages"--ideally, you really want your birds to have some room to fly around in their cages. For this reason, it's generally also considered best to get a cage that's wide and short than one that's tall and skinny (since birds need lateral space in order to take off), but these can be hard to find. Fortunately, a lot of flight cages are big enough that it doesn't matter that they tend to be taller than they are wide! I had this exact one for Spencer for many years before it finally fell apart (it was disassembled for moving purposes and reassembled one too many times), and it would be PLENTY big for two budgies!
You can get some pretty reasonably priced ones at Amazon (although be aware that the quality can vary widely, so it's wise to read the reviews first!), but I have also found really good deals looking at the online clearance section at pet stores' websites! I got Spencer's current flight cage (which is DEFINITELY big enough for two budgies) on sale on a big chain pet store's website for around US$250, which is extraordinarily cheap for a cage of its quality and size! If there's a parrot rescue near you, you might also check and see if they ever have cage sales--when I lived in a U. S. state (Colorado) that has a big parrot rescue (The Gabriel Foundation), they would sometimes fundraise by selling their spare cages at good prices. Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist (does anyone other than me still use Craigslist, lol) can also be good places to look but make sure the cage is in good condition before you buy it--a lot of people use these methods to try to unload cages that are damaged or no longer suitable for housing birds (e. g., they're rusty or bent or the bars are made of uncoated, potentially toxic, metal, etc.).
I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions, and thank you so much for doing your research before getting birds! <3 It really makes a huge difference for their quality of life!

(1/2) I know it's my fault, but I'm a bit uncomfortable with the speed I'm getting new pets currently. I can care for them alright ofc, but I purchased my second crested gecko a few days ago + I'm gonna go pick up another leopard gecko in a couple weeks which would be fine, BUT the leo seller also offered me a turtle which I agreed to and then my friend also talked me into taking in a tortoise. This all has happened in like a week and I feel overwhelmed and kind of anxious :(
(2/2) Yet despite all of this as I was surfing the net today I saw a canary bird on sale near me. His cage was so awful it triggered my anxiety and I cried for like an hour because I wanted to go 'save' him and introduce him to my flock... But with the amount of supplies I have to get now, I can't afford it. While I know I can't help every animal I see, it still breaks my heart especially when it's 'cause I'm overwhelmed or don't have enough cash to help them and I just don't know how to cope :/
Oooof, I can understand this kind of situation well. :( That’s a lot to take on at once, and even just reading that makes me anxious too! It’s really hard when you care about ALL the animals and you want to try & save them ALL. It can be difficult to figure out good coping mechanisms for this, especially if you’re in a lot of groups or circles that are focused on animals, animal care, etc.
Try to give yourself a break from as many of these groups as possible, especially if there’s frequently posts about poor animal care, animals that need rescue/adoption, etc. Block sites like craigslist, etc. from your browser for a while. If you get the urge to look, go pick up one of your pets instead.
I know it’s tempting to want to look and either help cross-post or share things to see if someone else can help, or to see what’s there in case it’s an emergency situation, etc., but self-care comes first. There’s always going to be more animals that need help, that need a home, but you can burn yourself out very fast by feeling responsible or guilty for not being able to help all of them. It’s best to try & give yourself periods of time where you just shut all of it away and focus on yourself and the animals you have. Sometimes it’s all we can manage, and that’s okay! Treat yourself kindly, focus on celebrating the animals you get to take care of, and cheer yourself up by thinking about the great care you’re going to give them, and special things you can do to make their lives extra good. ♥♥♥

October 1st-November 5th, Washington
We’ve been staying close to home for the month, with two side trips for me to help my buddy Andy with some work on the house he’s trying to sell.
Tumblr media
I noticed the old cherry trees of the neighbors oozing sap in all kinds of crazy shapes that light up in the daylight.
Tumblr media
Our buddy Mike gave us tickets to see the last game of the season for the Sounders, which was a treat for Andy and I.
Tumblr media
With Halloween coming up, Gae broke out the satin cape I bought at a garage sale some time ago... a snappy look for any gardener.
Tumblr media
We got out in the sunshine on some cooler days to enjoy the dwindling daylight.
Tumblr media
A walk through nearby Jesse Webster Park among it’s huge trees  on the 24th was cause for a family photo shoot.
Tumblr media
I ran across a 16′ canoe on Craigslist I couldn’t pass up, which we picked up on the 25th. We stopped at Birds Unlimitied on the way back from Port Hadlock.
Tumblr media
I got out for a walk up Peabody Creek Trail on the 30th, where I nearly stepped on this 3″ frog hopping the same trail.
Tumblr media
The intrepid explorer approaching one of several log bridges.
Tumblr media
Here’s Gae posing for a photo for use at church... all dressed up with someplace to be.
Tumblr media
We got this picture from Gae’s sister Stacy, showing the truckload of pumpkins she and Jeff bought to donate to ARC, near Houghton Lake, Michigan... that should feed some rescued critters for a few weeks!

Experiences are what life is about for us as a family and finding places to stay where we can relax and unwind from the daily grind is something we aspire to. To celebrate another April birthday, I wanted the experience of staying in a geodome for the weekend. We found this beautiful geodome out in the Santa Cruz mountains complete with banana slugs and a rushing creek right by – this all appealed to our back to the earth lifestyle, so I booked it pretty much after we had spent a weekend in the caravan in the redwoods the month before.
This space was incredible and so peaceful to sleep in – the owners of this geodome found it on Craigslist. They purchased it from a family who were living in it in Watsonville, who had they had their 2nd baby in the dome :D Previously the geodome was living in a commune in Sonoma, what a life and experience this space has had!
The kids really enjoyed jumping around in the creek – note to self, take the water shoes for everyone whenever there is water as no doubt they will get their shoes wet! And looking underneath the redwoods, we found a few banana slugs.
The geodome had a guidebook on what to check out in the area, and we decided we wanted to go for a hike taken care of by the Land Trust of Santa Cruz – called Byrne-Milliron Forest. This hike was highly recommended in the guidebook and only 30 minutes away down the hill near a town called Corralitos.
It was a hard ask for one of our little hikers who does not like going uphill but when you go uphill there is always nice views to be had. We found a plaque at the AJ’s Point of View dedicated to a steward of the forest, who had looked after this forest for 27 years – such dedication and I truly understand what he meant by magical. The hike was just over 3 miles to a white redwood tree – it was uphill for a while, and then we found the view!
When we reached a place on the map called ‘AJs Point of View’ it was filled with art created by locals artists using nature and a mailbox full of books and journals (where you could write an entry) donated by Jeff Helmer, the forest caretaker. The added bonus was water where you really needed a refill after the uphill in the sunshine on a warm spring day.
We got in touch with our wild side when travelling from the ‘AJs Point of View’ as the trail narrowed and crossed a creek. We had to use a rope to jump across to the foot trail surrounded by wildflowers and sorrel, this is where the magic happens.
In the sunlight, these little blue flowers were lit up like little fireflies in amongst the green. To walk on this narrow trail led to the white redwood where the trail ended. The trail went up and down, and at points, it was steep and hard on the knees and legs!
And eventually, we took the trail up from where the kids were done up to the white redwood to this chair that read ‘For the Glory Not the Gold’. This is what being in nature is about to me feeling it within and in communion with the natural embrace of the green of the trees.
Here are some of the trees of this 2nd growth redwood forest, there were many trees like the 600-year-old white redwood that were taken from here, but over time their little tree family had grown around them. Ash is sitting there by a burnt redwood not wanting to go any further – a lot of these trees we had missed going on the track to the white redwood as we had to watch where our feet when we were walking.
  Check out my acorn cap!
What an incredible discovery weekend for all of us all the while mourning the loss of our beloved cat Mack. We had a fire for him by the geodome and enjoyed some peace contemplating the good times we had together.
The geodome had a journal for all the guests to share their thoughts and illustrations of their time. The kids shared the two at the top, and the illustration below was my favourite by a very talented artist.
Even where we parked the car was a geodome for the kids to play on – Ash with his new friend the bird we found at a church charity sale where everything was free!
On Sunday we went to Sunset State Beach for a bit of beach time – living by the beach most of my life I feel very much at home when we visit, and it was so good to walk in the ice cold water checking out the sand dollars.
We honoured our furry friend at the beach by saying goodbye in the waves and remembering our love for him.
It is with so much gratitude that I enjoyed this weekend and am celebrating my birthday writing this today for all the wonderful experiences we have together as a family. Soon we will be homeward bound in Australia where we can start some new adventures. My love is with you for all eternity and beyond, Namaste x
Welcome to the Geodome Experiences are what life is about for us as a family and finding places to stay where we can relax and unwind from the daily grind is something we aspire to.

I Have A Bachelor’s Degree And Still Work 4 Jobs To Make Ends Meet
This post was originally published on this site
I used to enjoy getting mail ― back when I still lived with my parents and my biggest concern was whether the shoes I had ordered would fit. It terrifies me now. Will I find another collections notice for a doctor’s bill I had forgotten to pay? Or maybe another letter from the IRS reminding me that because my identity had been stolen, I now need a PIN to file? The credit card offers are the worst, as if they aren’t a part of the reason I’m in this mess in the first place.
The pit in my stomach is familiar. I felt it nine years ago when my boyfriend (now husband) and I couldn’t afford rent on our run-down two-bedroom apartment. I felt it again when a bill came that would be with us for years. I can vividly remember lying on the hallway floor with my boyfriend as he told me I should cut my losses now and leave. That he would only drag me down. He couldn’t have been further from the truth.
We met nearly 10 years ago at an auction. I was 22 and bright-eyed, working part-time as a data-entry clerk so I could tack the experience onto my resume. He was 42 and fresh out of auctioneer school, looking to redirect his career. The first time he asked me out for coffee, I refused. But the more time we spent together, the more I realized the age difference didn’t matter to me. In fact, I hardly noticed it.
I was, perhaps naively, thinking that we would be fine. Sure I was a college junior working weekends and nights in a mall, but I would have my bachelor’s degree soon. And with my degree companies would be clamoring to hire me. After all, a degree in English meant I could work nearly anywhere (wrong). Truthfully, my major was based on the fact that I loved to read and write. The fact my math skills were so dismal only seemed to point me further in that direction. It didn’t take long before I was making lists of publishing companies and genuinely excited for a fictional city office I had built in my mind.
Sure I was a college junior working weekends and nights in a mall, but I would have my bachelor’s degree soon. And with my degree companies would be clamoring to hire me.
Within a month of graduation, I had a very promising interview in New York City with a publishing company. I was ecstatic. This was it! A follow-up email a few weeks later informed me that they promoted someone from within. I was gutted. The trend continued. I worked for a woman whose dog would use my cubicle as a toilet. My paychecks were sporadic ― when they remembered to pay me. I answered an ad on Craigslist and interned for an author in Costa Rica. I moved from one mindless retail job to the next.
In 2012 ― nearly two years after graduating with a bachelor’s degree ― I finally landed steady work as a receptionist for an orthodontist’s office. It was a thankless job, but it was at least getting me closer to putting that degree to use.
A year of scheduling patient appointments paid off: I had finally landed a job in marketing. I thought this was it and things were going to start looking up for me. However, it didn’t take long after that to acknowledge the fact that a marketing assistant salary was not going be our saving grace. It wasn’t enough to pay the bills, let alone the rent in a seedy apartment complex behind a Wawa outside Philadelphia.
My nights were often filled with the sounds of fighting, police sirens and the POP-POP of guns being fired. Our mail slot was ripped off our front door, the knob wobbly where someone had tried to tool it open. A man with an ankle bracelet climbed into our neighbor’s window and swiped a wallet off the table. I rarely answered the door.
My husband and I argued often. While I struggled to build my career in marketing, he was adapting and forever changing with the ebb and flow. He went back to school to get his certification as a sign language interpreter. I couldn’t stomach the thought of adding to my student loan debt ― not when my degree meant nothing. I still recall the look of shock on my supervisor’s face when he realized I had a bachelor’s degree. If you’re wondering what a degree is worth, the answer is less than $1 ― the amount of the raise I received when they realized I had an education.
I still recall the look of shock on my supervisor’s face when he realized I had a bachelor’s degree.
It wasn’t until we started looking into purchasing a home in 2016 ― six years after graduating college ― that I realized just how little I was contributing. Within the span of a few months, our offer was accepted on what we had come to view as our dream home. A gorgeous Victorian with a wraparound porch, it sat neglected on a handful of acres tucked back from the main road. It was an absolute disaster inside ― a fact we can appreciate more fully now. I ignored the crumbling walls and mouse droppings in favor of the window seats and upstairs balcony. I didn’t flinch when a dead bird fell at my feet when I opened the attic door. This was fine, I had convinced myself. And truthfully, the state of the house was only reason we could afford it.
The nightmare began soon after. Our mortgage company would call us regularly as they worked on our paperwork. Having only ever rented, we blindly followed along as they requested bank statements and documentation. The calls became more intrusive and almost accusatory ― Why had I co-signed on my sister’s car loan? Could we get copies of signed apology letters from estranged family members to corroborate our story on some old loans?
After dumping thousands we didn’t have into inspections, we lost the house. Months later we learned the mortgage company had been purchased and it had put a stop on all loan approvals. When it called us back with assurances we would now be approved, we hung up the phone.
Devastated, we returned to our rental with the jacked-up door.
I was frustrated and angry. Angry that my degree meant so little. That I could barely afford groceries or our heat and electric bills. Everything went on a credit card ― a card that nearly three years later I am still struggling to pay off.
Desperate, I begged for hours at the auction house where my husband and I had met. They gladly took me back, although a part of me had selfishly hoped they wouldn’t. I didn’t want to work another job. My vacation time was quickly whittled away as I spent long hours keying in sales to make some cash for groceries. And it still wasn’t enough.
I found the address for another auction house and drove there to beg for work. Dozens of unemployed laborers meandered on the dock, offering clumsy help for tips. I was the only one there begging with a college degree. When they told me they didn’t really need the help, I volunteered my time for free. Anything to get my foot in the door and to help ease the press of anxiety on my chest. My persistence paid off, and I added another small but steady stream of cash to my wallet. And still the three jobs weren’t enough.
My life revolved around work. If I wasn’t at the office pushing papers, I was jumping from one auction house to the other. I was lucky ― there’s almost always a need for data entry clerks. Perhaps because one must be in a true state of desperation to voluntarily sit in front of a DOS system for hours on end without a break.
My degree sits mainly untouched and forgotten since I earned it in 2010. It’s hardly the topic of any conversation and it’s certainly not a point of pride.
I felt like I was missing something important. Something monumental that would turn our situation around. While working these auctions, I started to pay attention to what was selling and the prices I was keying in. I was no stranger to thrift stores or yard sales ― I shopped them often for myself. But what if I started flipping for profit?
I filled our living room with mountains of merchandise and taped ripped, faux brick wrapping paper to the wall. A half-collapsed, umbrella light stand provided just enough light for me to photograph my purchases and then stow them away in a second pile of bins. Mrs. Piles my husband called me, but it couldn’t be helped.
My consistency paid off. As sales slowly began to roll in, I could only feel relief.
I still don’t make anywhere near what someone with a bachelor’s degree is expected earn. I don’t have the cushy New York City office with a view. I don’t even make coffee runs for executives in the hopes that one day I’ll move up the ranks. My degree sits mainly untouched and forgotten since I earned it in 2010. It’s hardly the topic of any conversation and it’s certainly not a point of pride. My bachelor’s is almost an afterthought on my resume. A tiny blip or an accent mark buried at the bottom of the second page. It’s the auction experience that employers seem to take notice of. The degree itself is glossed over just like my name at the top ― they know I have one, but they’ll forget it once the interview is done.
It didn’t occur to me in high school that I didn’t have to go to college. Why would it when half of my time there was spent testing to prepare me for just that? I don’t regret my degree, even with my student loans hovering like a storm cloud over my head. If nothing else it was a great block of filler text for the bottom of my resume.
For now, I continue to burn the midnight oil. Tomorrow morning I’ll head off to work at a job that pays too little with a degree I do not use. As my husband leaves for yet another overnight shift, I wonder if we’ll ever get around to starting that family we so often talk about. Maybe someday, but not today.

Pickup Post #5 - Sony Weeks II
Alright, I apologize to any hardcore Nintendo fans that are reading, if you follow me specifically for Nintendo content. However, this is ultimately a Game Hunting blog, and sometimes you do have to take the deals that come along. As you may have guessed from the title, this is another Sony find. Playstation 2 to be exact. Couldn’t pass it up. You’ll see why as we go through it. I’ll tell you how the deal transpired.
I peruse Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and LetGo regularly. I have been doing several searches every other day or so. Including but not limited to “GameCube”, “SNES”, “Super Nintendo”, “Wii”, and “Nintendo 64″. Of course just “Nintendo” as well. With the latest pickup of Gran Turismo and Hotshots Golf 3 I’ve thrown in “Playstation 2″ as well. I just wanted to get a feel for what they cost, and I have come to see that people, on average, want somewhere in the neighborhood of about $30 for the Fat model, and around $40 to $50 for the slims. This is generally with no games, and one controller. If you add games, memory cards or extra controllers, the prices go up from there.
A Yard Sale ad appeared in my search results for “Playstation 2″ on Facebook Marketplace the other day. I thought, that is odd, I didn’t search for yard sales, they must have a Playstation 2 listed in the listing for it to match. I read the description, and sure enough there it was. I was looking at this on a Tuesday, and the listing said “3 Days Ago”, which would have put it about the morning of the Sunday in the weekend before. So I figured the listing had to be for the upcoming weekend. Which means the swap meet reseller vultures hadn’t gotten a crack at it yet, I need to see what there is, let’s check pictures to see if they included any of the video games. You have no idea how many listings for Yard Sales will list video games, and then include 30 pictures of the stuff they are selling, but not even show the games. The one thing I want to see to gauge what they have, and they overlook it completely. This one though, had the pictures, so I could see a lot of what they had.
Tumblr media
There’s the first one. Right off the bat my jaw hit the floor, TWO PS2 systems. The fat model, but still, two of them! The fact that they have two leads me to believe one of them might not work. Why else would they have two? What do you do when one breaks? You buy another one.
I see controllers sitting there too, three of them, and just from the pic I can tell it is two Dual Shock 2′s and one Dual Shock. They only want a buck a piece for the controllers too, which is a good sign. That is already a solid yard sale price for the controllers. At this point I laugh to myself for getting that Dual Shock from Goodwill last week for $4 by itself.
The pic is too small to read the price on the PS2s. I need to ask them how much those are to ascertain if I should try and get to this sale when they open.
Popped off a quick message asking what they were looking to get out of the PS2s. Half not expecting to even get a response. But, to my surprise, she replied pretty quickly. She said one PS2 had no power cord so they were looking for $8, and the other had the expansion on the back, and had all cords, so they had it at $10.
$18 for both?
That is less than most people are asking for just one, with no games and like, one controller. Throw in the controllers here and it’s $21. At this point I figure I might as well try to get both, to improve the odds of getting a working one. Just in case. Even the cost of both is less than most people are asking for even one. By almost half. So, no brainer.
Flipped back to the pictures to look at them further, maybe they have games for it too.
Tumblr media
Looks like a stack of 10 or so on the back right hand side of that table. Just from this pic though I can’t really see titles, hmmm, let me zoom in, maybe...
Tumblr media
Nope. Still just too grainy/blurry, I can’t see what they are. No matter, let me see if she would be willing to meet me before the sale and be willing to sell them before it starts this weekend. This is kind of a long shot, I’m sure she was not expecting to get a message about this, let alone be asked to sell something before the sale even starts.
I pop off another message: “Would you be opposed to selling them before the sale? Or at least one? I’m kind of starting a PS2 collection and this would be a perfect little jump start without breaking the bank. I will be too busy to come to the sale on Saturday.” She comes right back with “Well, our garage sale was last weekend so I have no problem selling them now.”
Wait. What?
Garage sale was last weekend?! They didn’t sell?! In this town where swap meet and flea market resellers are out in front of people’s houses an hour before the sale starts for video games? Even when the listing says no early birds?! Well, maybe that makes sense, if she only listed it on Facebook, and not on Craigslist, and listed it basically day of, since it was Sunday when she put it up...
No one saw it.
Good for me.
So she’s on board to sell them. I let her know I’m available to meet that same day around the lunch hour. She agrees, and asks if I want the games too. I said sure, depending on price and titles. Within 15 minutes she goes “Here are the games. We were looking for $1 each” and I had this on my screen:
Tumblr media
Wow! a nice, high resolution picture where I can read all titles. I’m really liking this seller! So I start looking them up immediately on eBay to see what kind of value we have here. I am completely unfamiliar with the PS2 library of games. Not only is it HUGE, I know nothing about values. I start with the Kingdom Hearts games, since I recognize the title, and while not one I care to play, they go for about $20 as a pair shipped.
Tumblr media
So about $15 in value there already. Good start. What else?
Dawn of Mana looked to be going anywhere from $13 shipped, to $20 shipped. So another solid $10 value there. Lets keep going...
Innocent Life, after looking this up it appears to be a Harvest Moon title, and is going for between $8 and $15 shipped. So another solid $10 value there. Already we are up to $35 in value and I still haven’t checked all the games. One more...
Steambot Chronicles. Never heard of this in my life.
Tumblr media
Wait.
WHAT!?
FIFTY SIX DOLLARS?
Granted this is one of the highest ones, but this was a SHOCK. Some are $35 to $40 average. Pricecharting shows this one at $50 CIB. This auction was CIB and in great condition so it clearly went for more than the others, but at this point there was no way I wasn’t getting this deal. I immediately asked where I should be headed. Either an address, or a location if she would rather me not come to her house. She just gave me her address. I told her thank you and about when I would be there. I said I would take both systems, and all the games, $10 + $8 + $9 = $27, I asked if twenty five even would cover it. She said yes. I hit the road.
On the way she asks if I want the controllers too? No extra charge. I said sure.
This deal keeps getting better. I just bought a Dual Shock at Goodwill for $4 and thought it was a good deal and you want to give me THREE for free? Let me think about that one for about 0.0382 seconds. Yep, I’ll take them.
So I arrive, we exchange greetings, I give the stuff a quick once over, and check a couple of the more valuable games (Kingdom Hearts II, Steambot Chronicles and Innocent Life), yep all in there, complete and in good shape. I didn’t want to linger, she had everything stacked up neatly, and she said she was on maternity leave, so there was probably a sleeping baby somewhere. I gave her the $25 and she helped me out to the car with everything. I did inquire how it was they didn’t sell at the sale, and she said they only had two people show up. TWO. Ouch. As I guessed earlier, probably not advertised well. If she was on Craigslist I guarantee someone would have cleaned this out in four point two seconds.
So here it is now that I’ve picked it up and brought it home.
Tumblr media
Now, after doing this for a couple three months, and getting a few finds, especially the one where Monkey ball 2 wouldn’t boot up, I’m used to there being bad news. I’ve come to expect something to be off with alost every deal, that’s why I look for prices this cheap. Buying like this gets you good deals, but you are also doing all the work, travelling to the seller, taking all the risk if something isn’t right. This one was only slightly disappointing, but probably because it was not unexpected. The PS2 on the left, the $10 one, doesn’t read discs. Not a single game would boot in it, even the absolutely flawless Gran Turismo 4 I got in the last post. It does turn on, controller works, I can manipulate the files on the memory card, just no disc action. This is not a huge surprise, I said that I suspected going in that there was a chance at least one didn’t work if they had two. The $8 one reads discs and plays fine, though I noticed a bit of a video issue, if I would wiggle or move the video cable, the picture would scramble and jump on the TV screen. I tried the second cable and it did the same thing. So I tried the other PS2. Same issue. I find it highly unlikely that both PS2s have the same issue, but it also seems just as unlikely that both cables have the same issue. I do hope it is just the cables.
I will probably order a component cable for one of them since I do intend to keep one, and try it again. It is only about $6 or $7. Hopefully the problem will go away with a new cable. I’ll update on that later when I have a chance to try it.
One of the Dual Shock 2 controllers has a little chunk of the rubber missing from the start button. Minor issue.
Finally, ATV Offroad Fury, is actually a Rugrats game instead. The funny thing is, Rugrats is worth more disc only, than ATV Offroad Fury complete. HA! Battlefront II and Dawn of Mana are also not complete, they are missing manuals. That devalues Dawn of Mana slightly, yes, but at least Steambot is complete, and boy is it ever complete. It is near mint condition. I’m hoping this one will fetch near $50 or more like the other very good condition one did.
In any case, I’m still very happy with the find, down to $25 from the asking price of $30, and there is a lot more value than that in this find. Especially with just one game at $40+ on eBay right now. I estimate this find at
$30 for PS2 Fat model with cables and one controller, another $10 each for the two additional controllers. Another $3 or so for the Memory Card. Add in a conservative $35 for Steambot, and another $25 total for Kingdom Hearts and Innocent Life. That comes to $103. I’ll throw $5 on the non working PS2 and maybe $10 total for the rest of the games as a lot. Grand total $118 for $25.
Winning.
As I mentioned before, I do plan on keeping at least one of the PS2s. Probably with a component cable. I dug up an old PATA hard drive that’s 200GB, and will see if I can hack one of these things to load ISO files. Would be cool to have a permanent PS2 in the collection that can store my games without needing to keep swapping them out over and over.
I do plan on looking at the one that won’t read, it could be fixable, who knows.
Official business:
$54.36 - $25 = $29.36
$29.36 game hunting money remaining. I will be selling something soon, probably my old copy of PaRappa the Rapper.
Tumblr media
I was never a big fan, and now that I have a PS2 and it tested good, I can sell it as working, instead of untested.
I will be posting the results of the tinkering on the non-working one as soon as I know whats up with it and if it can be resurrected.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Talk to you all soon.

Broke Book Buying... Another Discussion....
It blows my mind how often I find myself having a conversation with people who tell me that they would love to be able to read they just can't afford it. This is one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard.
Because I am still stuck mentally on the whole topic from when I discussed it with this person earlier I'm going to give a few tips on how anyone can afford to read.
Some of you will roll your eyes and skip this post because yes, I've talked about it before and that's okay but if you feel like reading about it you're welcome to continue. Either way I'm going to talk about it and someone is going to hear it. :)
There are plenty of ways to afford reading books. Yes, even brand new books.
It doesn't matter if you're a penny pincher or if you're living check to check, or only have enough spare change to fill a soda can. Heck it doesn't matter if you don't have any money to put into it at all. There are multiple ways and places to buy books, get books, and cheats to buying books.
Now I understand that there are many people out there that are very specific about what they are willing and not willing to read that's okay.
However if you're a fan of reading brand new, untouched books that have just come out and they're selling for $30 bucks at your local Barnes and Noble or Half Price Books stores chances are you're probably going to miss out.
But there are some upsides to shopping at both.
Barnes and Noble keeps a limited inventory of clearance items in their stores set up on small tables that you can buy books for a discounted price. Barnes and Noble also has coupons that you can bring with you to get a better deal on those prices as well. Once in awhile they limit the coupons to non sale items but usually its okay to combine.
Half Price Books is a great place to get a deal on books. As its name states half price usually only charges have the list price of their inventory, they provide coupons for calendar buyers and email followers, they have sale days and a clearance section that will blow your mind and a blended inventory of both new and used items.
Don't want to pay that's okay.
You still have an opportunity to find and read the same books but for free.
You may have to lower your standard bar just a teeny bit but you might be surprised to know that you can acquire the same books that you want to read from your local library.
Yes, I said library.
To those of you who bash people who go to libraries - get your head checked. You're missing out one a very fundamental experience of being a book reader.
I understand that some libraries have limited stock on their shelves and they may not have the book you are looking for when you go in. If they don't there is a way to get what you want.
You can request the book through the front desk attendant, or B. You can go online and pre-order the title from another library and it transfers for free to your local location where you can pick it up - and read it for free. Please note if you do not have the internet nearly all libraries have computers that allow you to access their database and request the title you want if you're too shy to ask yourself.
All that's required of you is patience for its arrival and picking it up.
Also, keep in mind that many libraries also sell certain books too. You can actually buy them for cheap. Most libraries have "friend sales" that sell books between 25 cents to a dollar. If you keep your eye out you can double your savings on the days that the library have excess purge sales. They will pull out the back stock and cut the price in half, offer twofers (two for one deals) and more.  This is a great way to walk out the door with bags and even box fulls of books on the cheap.
Another good place to buy books really cheap are at charity and thrift shops. If you don't know where one is its easy enough to do a search to find what's local to you on google or other map apps. A lot of charity stores and thrift shops sell books, movies and music anywhere from 10 cents to a dollar and all the proceeds go back to the community.  This is a great way to give back and get cheap books.
Church sales and yard sales - fantastic and cheap and you can almost always find some rare diamonds that most stores don't carry on their shelves anymore for those rare and out of print book fans, or people just looking to save money.
Charity Thrift shops I suggest getting an early start on because that's when all the good stuff is put out. I love charity shops because I know that money I spend is going to a good cause.
Keep in mind for the yard sales I highly suggest getting out on a very early Saturday or Sunday morning and taking a drive. See what's going on in your neighborhood.
Community posts and websites often let you know when a church is going to do a sale but its also fun to get out and early bird it in places that are right in your own area.
Most the people you buy the books from at yard sales and charity stores are very grateful and in need of the money. They appreciate you buying up all they got. :) Plus, hey, it can't hurt to add a coin to the good vibes karma bag right?
Some people suggest places like Craigslist but I personally often shy away from that or from recommending it simply because it could be a security or safety issue I usually stick with what I know you can trust. So if you go with that please be careful with giving out personal information to strangers or meeting strangers to buy what they're selling. I want you to be safe.
Another good way to reading for free is borrowing. Borrow from your family, borrow from your friends. See what your mom or cousin or sister and brother may be reading. You might find a new reading buddy or someone who can break down and do a book talk with you. Just keep in mind if you borrow something to give it back. No one likes a permanent borrower. That's just stealing.
I'm a big believer in RE-READING. Yes. Reading what you already own. Find a title that you may have shelved and left sitting for awhile. Its always nice to visit old friends and it doesn't cost you anything.
You can also join an online book trade program. A lot of people take part in these. You list what you have someone wants to borrow it has something you want and you trade. Its a good cheap way to find like minded readers like yourself and read what you want.
A good way to buy cheap used books online are through places like Amazon, Book Outlet and Thriftbooks. Be aware of condition terms to make sure that the books you get are in decent shape before ordering but its cheap and the shipping isn't too harsh. Although, recently Amazon has increased shipping price to pay for their new mortar store and air port delivery expansion costs on their company. (Don't trust me? Read the fine print notification they sent out. I believe its around page 2,000 in the fine print terms.)
For me personally I'm a big fan of discount stores. I'm a big fan of hitting up multiple locations when it comes to discount stores because each one is going to have different inventory.  Plus, you never know what you're going to find.
Some examples of discount stores (local to me- you'll have to find your own you don't have these near you.) The Dollar Store: yes, the dollar store has books. I admit a very small amount of books and a very limited selection but you can get lucky once in awhile. Indoor/Outdoor Swapmeets and Antique Shops: These places are usually bursting with books. Similar to yard sale experience but its totally worth it if you love the hunt. Side note: Antique Shops tend to list the item prices a little on the higher side because both the seller and the store make a profit from the sale.
Savers, Goodwill, even Ross all have books.  (Lately most Ross locations have been reducing inventory on books since they don't really sell well in their stores so this availability may change)
Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Savers are fantastic places to get books if you want to save some money and don't mind buying used books.  The pricing varies but you can buy a book from Goodwill, Salvation Army and Savers for anywhere from 89 cents to $4.
There are even some cheat tips to getting a better discount on buying books at Goodwill, Salvation Army and Savers. Some might call it cheating the system a little bit but when you want to save money and they let you get away with it, why not take advantage? Heh.
Okay if you've been into a Goodwill or Savers or Salvation Army you've probably noticed that most of their items have personalized price tags on them.
Pay attention to this because it will pay off if you want to get a better deal.  Places like Goodwill, Savers and the Salvation Army have specials that they run every day of the week that coincide with one of the colors coded on their price tags.  Every day they have mark down sales on certain items. One day of the week will go to items like clothes, another day will go to furniture items, the day after that will go to toys or books etc.
Usually Salvation Army doesn't do as high a discount and their prices are a little higher so keep that in mind when shopping with them.
However for both Goodwill and Savers they're a little more affordable when it comes to pricing and they give a better discount on the sale pricing.
Most of the time Salvation Army offers a 20% discount while Goodwill and Savers offer a 50% discount.
So on the sale days these stores will announce that they are offering the discount which is typically half off on a "such colored" price tag. To give you an example they'll say today is 50% off items with a purple tag or sticker, or 50% off items with a brown sticker or blue etc etc.
So if you happen to come across an item with that color whatever the price is will get you half off that price listing.
Pretty sweet.
But - hold out because it gets better. Both Goodwill and Savers have their own form of coupon discounts. If you register to get emails from Goodwill they have available on their website a coupon that you can either print out or show to the cashier on your phone when you pay that will get you an additional 20% off and its good all month.
Savers is a little more complicated however its totally worth it.
When you go into the store tell them that you signed up on their website and members will be provided with a discount card that get you special discounts that shoppers who just walk in and shop  don't get.
Signing up with Savers is free and it provides members who have a card access to additional rewards, points, discounts and sales that no one else gets.
To sweeten the pot both Savers and Goodwill have HALF OFF days. 50% off everything. Usually it only falls on a certain day but if you go in and get a haul, get half off and add your bonus discount and or your coupon along with the mark down you walk out the door with a huge load and you get to pay next to nothing for it.
Pretty cool huh?
Another good way to get books cheap is shopping at your local book shops. Privately owned bookstores are a great way of getting books for cheap and its always fun. A lot of the owners are wonderful and its nice to have a place that you go to regularly that you are familiar with and who are familiar with you.  Its like having a second home.
Book Fairs: These are a little trickier as books fairs are usually a yearly event. State Book Fairs are a hoarders dream. An example of a state book sale because I live in Arizona is the VNSA book sale. Its once a year in February takes place at the state coliseum - its an all day event. Be prepared to wait in line because everyone from everywhere goes there - get your hands on the nearest available cart - actually, better yet... Bring your own because the flatbeds available are almost always gone. You will die loading up on the amount of books, music and movies they have available for next to nothing and all the proceeds go to local community charities.
There are also other bookfairs much like scholastic which usually take place at certain schools. You can check their website for where the book fair tour is currently or going to be located.
It is open to the public however they do prefer that student relations attend the sale - this also gets you a better discount so if you have a child attending the school its even better. But if you don't its okay. Keep in mind prices are a bit steep but its always fun.
Do you like shopping at Walmart? They have a section for books and even better different areas they sell discounted and clearanced items. A lot of times Walmart will pull items off the shelf that aren't new that month and mark it down for clearance to get rid of it. This is a great way to buy books on sale. Check their clearance isle and their mark down bins. The discount is worth the digging to find that gem.
A great way to get books for free is to join websites like Goodreads granted, its not guaranteed that you are going to win, there are only a limited amount of books being given away and the drawing is random however they still hold giveaways on the site that you can take part of.
Speaking of giveaways you can also follow your favorite author or publisher or blogger website, social page, email newsletter, and or blog. Almost all of them do certain giveaways for their readers and followers.
Please do not manipulate this generous and delicate system. Also, if you win a book from them please post a review and give credit to the provider. Its the reason they hold the giveaways to begin with. Plus, it pays to pay it forward as well as showing gratitude for a labor that takes a lot out of the author.
Do you shop at stores like Target? Want to get a better deal? Pay attention to their price stickers.
Target's "unofficial" markdown schedule:
All Target inventory goes through a markdown phase that is in set increments: 15%, 30%, 50%, 70% and so on, up to 90%. Here’s the unofficial markdown schedule so you’ll know exactly when to look for the best deals:
Monday: Baby items, children's clothing, electronics, and office supplies/gift wrap/stationery
Tuesday: Home décor, women's clothing, and domestic items
Wednesday: Food, health and beauty items, men's clothing, toys, and garden items
Thursday: Lingerie, housewares, sporting goods, shoes, and luggage
Friday: Cosmetics, jewelry, hardware, automotive, and home improvement
The "every two weeks" markdown schedule: Target typically further reduces unsold clearance merchandise every two weeks once the markdowns have begun, but this can vary based on region, amount of unsold inventory and manager discretion. If you are watching an item and see that it has been marked down 30% or 50%, come back in another two weeks to see if it has been marked down further.
How to read target clearance tags:
15%: When an item goes on clearance at Target, the first markdown is usually 15%. You can tell exactly how much the item has been marked down by looking at the upper right-hand corner of the red clearance tag. If you see the number 15, it is marked down 15%. The original price of the product will always be listed on the left-hand side next to the word "was," and the new price of the item on clearance will be located on the right, next to the word "now." The last digit of the item will usually end in the numbers 6 or 8 (for example: $7.48).
30%, 50%, 70% and 90%: If you look closely at the red clearance tag, you might notice the higher clearance numbers 30, 50, 70 or even an amazing 90! These numbers correspond to the percentage off that product is now being sold for.
Price tags ending in $0.06 or $0.08: If the price of the item on clearance ends in $0.06 or $0.08, the item will be marked down again during the next markdown cycle as long as there is inventory in the store. The item typically will remain at the current percentage off for two weeks before progressing to the next level.
Price tags ending in $0.04: If the last number in the price of the item ends in $0.04, the item has been marked for final clearance, and this is the lowest price at which Target will sell the item.
Random price tag endings: Often, Target price tags end with $0.00, $0.01, $0.05, $0.07, etc. I spoke with some store managers and was told these endings are arbitrary and simply indicate an item is on clearance with no specific meaning, and the item will continue on its clearance cycle.
Sectioned clearances: Seasonal merchandise such as holiday, back-to-school, and summer items are examples of these clearance products. Many of these are holiday-branded and will be reduced at a much faster rate than the typical two-week increment because Target needs the space for new inventory. Often the products begin at 50% off, then are reduced to 70% off, and continue on up to 90% off within two weeks. Also, items may not be individually marked; the entire section will be at one discount rate.
Gift card bonus price endings: Though unrelated to clearance items, anything that ends with $0.49, $0.79 or $0.99 indicate a Target Gift Card promotion is in effect. The Gift Card offer details will be listed at the very top in red, and the amount of the gift card will be listed on the card or offer.
A great way to get a free book when shopping at Target for your everyday items during the gift card promotions is to use the card you receive for making the purchase to buy your book.
You can even get free e-books from sites like Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Kobo. There are always special price days listing different books for free for a 24 hour period. Granted its not always going to be exactly what you are looking for but you have a chance of finding some really great books to read plus possibly some new authors you hadn't yet discovered.
If you complain that you don't have an e-reader like a Kindle or a Nook or Ipad, that's okay because there are plenty of free apps you can download onto your computer or your cellphone that allow you to read your digital books that way. If you have a book in a format you don't have a reader for you can always try Calibre its a great program and reads nearly every format available and its free.
So as you can see there are plenty of ways of being able to afford buying or getting books, so no excuses. Collect your spare change that you keep laying around the house and make a book fund. Save your pennies you leave laying around the house then head out and see just how far those pennies will go. You might be surprised.
Do you have any tips, tricks or secret ways that you save on books? Tell us about them in the comments below!

Garden Hacks – Repurpose Everyday Items
When it comes to preparedness – or life in general – there’s a ton to buy. When we can reuse something, it helps. One, there’s the direct cost application. Two, looking at something and seeing its ability to be something completely different has enormous benefits in opening the mind in general.
If we’re preparing for a crisis, gardening and the ability to provide fresh foods in the gulf of winter and spring take on a far greater importance than just a hobby or a passion. Happily, there are some things that can be salvaged for free or found at very low-cost that make a world’s worth of difference. Channel your inner Julie Andrews with me as we look at a few of my favorite things. There’s some non-gardening uses for each listed as well.
DVD Racks
Years ago I picked up a free DVD rack to be a bean trellis for a Rubbermaid tote garden. I have since been in love, and it’s one of the things I consistently watch for at yard sales, curbside pickup listings, and foreclosure cleanup sites.
I got lucky, and mine have a rounded top at the sides. If you find some that don’t, just glue on a milk jug cap for some of its applications.
They go way beyond trellising.
They work for the far ends and sometimes central support “poles” of low poly tunnels or low hoops for garden beds and rows. A little free bamboo or PVC to span distances, some binder clips (Dollar Tree) to clamp the plastic on, and you’re in business.
They can also be set up long-wise down the middle of a bed to form an A-frame style “camping tent” poly cover if desired, which works really well for peas, with roots and salads to the outer verges, and converts well to later tomato beds.
They also form plant racks for inside near windows, against pale walls, or outdoors to keep salads conveniently close or make use of vertical height.
Mine all hold square plastic coffee tubs (they need a length of string along the front unless it’s a really well-protected area), #2.5 cans (the large tomato or peaches can), and V8 bottles without any modification at all. They’ll hold 2L bottles on their sides for longer, shallow containers, or Lipton and Arizona tea jugs of both types and sizes either cut off vertically or horizontally.
I can do square juice jugs as well, but they overhang enough to make the dog tails an issue on their sides, and I’m more comfortable with some twine or wire looping them to the back bar.
I prefer the open-dowel construction type, just because it leaves me options. I can add thin saplings, bamboo or thin sheathing to convert them if needed, but the open frame allows more light and nestles the rounded-bottom containers well.
Outside Gardening the DVD racks have the ability to hold larger canned goods and bottles of water, be used to dry clothes as-is or be half of a frame of dowels or saplings to create a larger drying space, and the poor kid used to have a pair that were hung with a curtain, topped with a chunk of (free) plywood, and outfitted with $2 in hooks to hang her uniform shirts and pants, like a mini closet that was also the mirror and vanity.
Storm Doors & Windows
These guys don’t multipurpose to the same degree as the DVD racks. They’re really handy to run across, though. One, having a backup is never a bad thing. Two, they are ready-made cold frames and pest exclusion frames.
I like a 3’ width for garden beds, permanent or bounded, and they fit pretty perfectly as-is. I can tighten up and use straw bales to create a different kind of cold frame with them laid across the top. I can run them in series or as individual structures.
An A-frame can be pretty quickly mocked up and is one of the easiest builds for getting your feet wet. It’s also handy in that it sluices ice and snow build-up and is more resistant to winds. The doors and windows get hinged at the tops, any stick or tool props them so they don’t flip the frame or ka-bong off your noggin, and cats, dogs and goats are less likely to stand on them.
Just the mesh from storm doors and windows is useful. So is mesh that comes off when you repair those.
It’s going in the garden, so some stitching or a little duct tape on both sides to repair a rip isn’t an issue. All it’s doing is protecting seed-stock squash from cross-pollination or keeping creepy-crawlies from eating the brassicas, lettuce, and beans before you can.
The advantage to taking out the mesh is that it’s an even easier build yet. There’s no hinges (unless you hinge the whole frame) and there’s less weight. That means more materials become potentials for the frame itself. You can tie some loops to go around a brick or post, or add some eye hooks to keep it in place.
Do keep the builds small enough that you can lift or flip by yourself once plants are in there. Some posts to the inside of the bed or rows can create a pivot point for flipping.
Painter’s/Construction Drop Cloth
My first set of drop cloth came from a part-time job in high school. I have been in love ever since.
It’s not super expensive, and it’s a toss-up whether the construction poly or the garden poly is cheaper to buy new, but it’s usually the totally clear construction drop cloth in our area. The 5+ mil I use is fairly durable in Southern wind storms, sun rot, ice and freezing rain, and Mid-Atlantic snow.
Contact handyman type businesses and painting businesses – for these as well as the windows and storm doors, and the mesh from those. Usually they’ll only use them for so long and as with the mesh, a few duct tape patches and the paint stains won’t impede too much structurally or light-wise.
Should you see them pop up cheap or free somewhere, don’t neglect those fancy-people outdoor grill, furniture and sofa covers, or any clear, thick, translucent vehicle covers.
Like the totally clear and colorless painter’s plastic, they all make for great garden hoop houses. Some of them can also be outfitted with sturdier construction to form a more permanent greenhouse.
Outside Gardening drop “cloth” or storm doors and windows can also be assembled into wind and snow-blocking shields around exposed doors at the home, or can enclose part or all of a porch to turn into a mudroom in an emergency or during snowy weather. Doing so creates a buffer chamber so there will be less polar vortex entering the house with every human and pet.
Plastic can also be used to cover windows and doors inside or out to decrease drafts and increase insulation value.
The painter’s plastic has the same value for livestock in extreme environments, especially if a normally warm climate is experiencing sudden return-to-winter weather after flocks or rabbits have adjusted to 60s-70s-80s, or if it’s so rare to have severe weather, coops and hutches were never built for extreme cold.
Drop cloths and poly covers can also be used to line bedding for the young, ill and elderly, so that every sneeze and cough or “mommy, I feel- blech” does not lead to disinfecting a mattress as well as changing bedding.
Wire Shelving
Really, do you ever have enough shelving? I particularly like seeing the simple-frame, open-weave, metal-wire shelving for bathrooms, laundry rooms and closets pop up in junk piles, yard sales, and Craigslist, because it’s super handy, super versatile stuff.
Like the DVD racks, it’s indoor-outdoor tiered plant stands, either year-round or during seed-starting and transplant season(s).
It can also be wrapped in our reclaimed plastic sheets or form part or all of the structure for salvaged windows or poly covers to make a mini greenhouse on a porch, beside a house or garage, for growing later and earlier in the season.
Then it gets even more useful.
Even if the whole is a little rickety, the shelves themselves can be removed and then turned into trellises. They can be rearranged around their original legs-stand or affixed to bamboo or the legs from old tables or chairs to form short garden fences to discourage turtles and rabbits, and limit dogs running through beds.
As an added bonus, if you have a senior gardener or an injury, sinking some of those sturdy table legs or a bundle of 3-4 larger bamboo canes 18” deep and up to hip or rib level can be a major aid in keeping them gardening.
The sturdy supports can then be covered with netting or sections of storm door mesh to act as a further bird and pest exclusions.
Outside Gardening there are endless uses for shelving, from water collection to organizing anything at all. Wire shelves also offer a lot of airflow for drying clothes.
The shelf “planks” of wire units can be used to patch and shore up fences and coops, especially somewhere something dug. They can be used to cover vehicle and house windows to limit damage from thrown bricks or if a storm window is damaged during a crisis.
They can also be reconfigured into a cage or crate for rabbits or small birds, to expand flocks or because they happened to be stacked from Craigslist and Freecycle runs ahead of time and now there’s a puppy to crate train or weather has shifted and we’re worried about the next generation of layers.
The shelves can be used to sift the largest chunks out of compost or soil in some cases, help form a gabion to slow water and keep it from increasing erosion, or can be lined with mesh or cloth for drying foods or seeds.
The shelves can usually be easily reconfigured with larger or smaller gaps than originally intended to facilitate buckets, larger boxes, or drying seeds and grains.
They don’t pop up as much as they used to, but some can still be found on the freebie sites as curbside pickup, or for <$15-20. They also sometimes pop up at Salvation Army/Goodwill, and if you cultivate contacts, sometimes you get your hands on just the shelf parts because the rest of the racks have been lost during multiple transfers or all the pieces weren’t donated.
Garden Reuse-its – My Favorite Things
These are just a few of my favorite things to re-purpose for growing veggies. The world is full of things like laundry bags we can use to prevent caterpillars and squash bugs on our cabbage and beans and zucchini, and old carpeting we can layer deep in garden walkways to cut down on maintenance time.
Any time we can reuse something, it cuts down on waste, making for a better world – not just the world around us. If we’re saving time and money, and if we’re developing some creativity and a new way of looking at things, we increase our preparedness and better our own world directly.
