omg!!! Dog au
I always head canoned jimmy to be a golden retriever and joel to be a tiny feral dogo
but they are clearly not here and I wonder what breed you drew them as and why you choose them to be that in the au
Tumblr media
golden retriever was actually one of the breeds that i was considering in the brainstorming stages (along with some terrier breeds) but i eventually settled on the good old beagle for jimmy.
to me personally, beagle fits because they and their hound cousins are just a little more plucky and scrappy than "himbo-soft" golden retrievers are stereotyped as. jimmy is brash and foolhearted to an hilarious degree so i wanted to give him a more "goofy but still a hunting dog" feeling if that makes any sense at all.
also beagles are known for baying and i think it could function as a fun parallel symbol to the canary stuff he has going on.
Tumblr media
and lastly, scott is a sheltie (and martyn and tango are medium-small sized breeds as well), so i wanted jimmy to fit in those size ranges and dynamics. he also just doesn't read big or small dog to me so medium size he is!
Tumblr media
and good ole joel is a jack russel because that breed is terror on tiny legs. joel has a truly potent amount of small dog energy with the ferocity and gaul to back it up, so he gets the jack russ because those guys are as if a rabid animal and also 200 live grenades was packed into 10-pounds worth of dog.
it was a debate on whether to give grian, bdubs, or joel the jack russel terrier as they are all (just a little) napoleon-complex personalities to me but jack russel fit joel best design-wise and i ended up finding breeds that work with the other two better

how did you get into bird dogs? do you prefer britannies for any reason? i have a bird dog mix myself and she is so fun. she got me into hunting breeds.
also, what high value treats do you enjoy using? i try to use veggies and chicken but want to add variety.
Mav was my first brittany and I picked the breed basically on a coin flip. I had some criteria (size, biddability, general temperament, activity level) that several breeds met and I ended up picking brittanies out of my short list because I had read a book I liked as a kid that had a brittany in it. It's not a strategy I would recommend but it worked out for me!
I was back and forth on gundog breeds when I got Aurora, but ultimately I stayed with britts because I love a pointing breed (a different flavour of biddability that I find extremely fun to work with), they are the perfect size for me, and they are CKC recognized so I can do CKC events. Other breeds I considered to a high degree were blue picady spaniels (too big), field spaniels (not a pointer, maybe too chill for my lifestyle, hard to get a puppy in Canada), boykin spaniels (not a pointer, not CKC recognized), and French spaniels (hard to get into, very closed breed). I was actually on waitlists for BPS and the FS but backed out for one reason or another. I was following Rory's kennel (new breeder's first litter) because I liked her puppy raising efforts and wanted to see how the puppies grew up, so when Aurora was offered to me, it was a pretty easy yes.
I lived up in Yellowknife with Mav for a few years and hunting (esp hunting with versatile dogs) is extremely common. I was able to go ptarmigan hunting and duck hunting a couple times and it was cool. I worked on easy gundog skills with Mav as much as I could. He found a lot of the work extremely reinforcing though (searching fields, retrieving) and it quickly became my favourite thing to work him in.
When I got Aurora I really wanted to encourage behaviours that would help her be the best possible field dog, things like confidence and appropriate ranging and recall. She's still a baby and we both have a lot to learn, but it's been super fun so far. It's really rewarding to watch her do what she was made to do and enjoy it with every fibre of her being.
For high value snacks, I usually pick up a different option every time I do groceries. This week I had clearance pre-cooked turkey breast strips, the week before that I had discount aged cheddar cheese cubes, the week before that I had rotisserie chicken I found in my freezer. You get the idea. I keep freeze dried raw for training at home or on leash, but use the good stuff for recall and retrieves in the wild.
Here's a little croissant for reading this far:

this is so silly. one of the perks of having goody gardens as a thing is that it gives me an excuse to have like 50 billion fursonas. but then i'll keep thinking "but what about my truesona" as if that doesn't completely defeat the purpose
#melonposting#like oh my god. my brain for some reason cannot handle having multiple entities to describe myself unless i put that in its own framework#like goody gardens being an imagination world and such (it's imaginary so it doesn't have to obey physics or whatever)#and i'm like yay!! i couldn't describe myself with just one fursona/persona anyway#but there's something about having one that is generally me that's appealing and it's annoying that it just doesn't really work for me#i mean hey mr. nice guy used to just be my persona - and he was a personified version of my objectsona anyway#and now he's part of that larger framework#i still go by mr. nice guy because i think he's the most central to me. like he's the 'protagonist' of goody gardens so to speak#but the others are just as 'me' as he is#i dunno. as it is it's annoying just picking one animal for each goody gardens character#and i don't want to just have every animal as an option cuz that kinda takes away the meaning#but like with my difficulty suspending my disbelief...#if i ever want to play splatoon right? i'd be a cephalopod of some sort in that game#so in order for my brain to believe that i could 'be in that game' i must have a cephalopod fursona for at least one goody gardens characte#and so on and so forth#for bluey i must have a dog fursona. for ducktales i must have a bird. for my little pony i must have some sort of ungulate#and then for the bluey example: honey-doo gets a dog fursona cuz that suits her#and that fursona being attached to her would inevitably affect that dog's design and breed and personality and so on#which means that the dog she'd be might not be the dog *i'd* be (as in my whole person)#which is confusing and annoying#so then what - for every fursona there's two versions? one general one and one goody gardens character specific? that's so weird though#i have a vague idea of what those general ones might be like (brown or yellow with rainbow accents) but it's still soooo confusing :[#god it's times like this when i realize that autism isn't good or bad it's just weird and annoying sometimes#like god forbid these two completely inconsequential things not match up perfectly. god forbid#like golly it could not matter less!!!!! stop worrying about this you silly goose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#anyway sorry for this. i have work to do :'D i need to read karl marx haha
