"Magnetoreception is now known to be used as a guidance system among a wide array of animals. It relies on the geomagnetic field that englobes planet earth and provides a globe-wide compass for migrating animals. Among them, sea turtles are the most studied, and yet little is known about the internal mechanisms allowing them to exploit such magnetic information and use it for navigation. How do animals find their way when they rely on magnetoreception? In this essay, I first discuss the three main current hypotheses regarding the way animals may detect magnetic field parameters. I then relate this to the puzzling case of sea turtles and the novel symbiotic magnetoactic hypothesis. Finally, I discuss the difficulties in studying magnetoreception. I find that although each of the three main theories offer convincing arguments when it comes to specific individual species, none currently explain the mechanics of magnetoreception in all animals. I discuss that it is likely that these mechanics are not exclusive but instead occur simultaneously in individuals, and I show through the example of sea turtles and magnetitic bacteria, that there may even be entirely new mechanism we are yet to unravel. I finally describe how our biases based on our human senses as well as the difficulties we encounter when measuring magnetic activity may lead to errors, and how research needs to take this into account in order to yield convincing results that will shed light on what is still unknown."

Reverse 1999 Theory: What is "Perception" and how does it work in arcanists?

Vertin canonically has uncanny perception and a deep understanding for arcanum even amongst arcanists, despite her lack of skill. Arcanists are very sensitive, or rather, vulnerable to emotions. There is another arcanist known for her perception we can look at for more clues.

Mesmer Jr. also has a "acute perception", much like Vertin.

In Reverse 1999, Perception functions like a 6th sense in arcanists. But how does it work? I looked up to see if there is a connection between magnetic fields and emotions. Turns out there is A LOT. Specifically the magnetic field radiated by the heart.

We have found there is a direct relationship between the heart-rhythm patterns and the spectral information encoded in the frequency spectra of the magnetic field radiated by the heart. Thus, information about a person’s emotional state is encoded in the heart’s magnetic field and is communicated throughout the body and into the external environment.

There is so much cool information in this article I'd love to gush about, but we're here for lore. Remember my psychube post that I never shut up about? It's actually missing very important information that I didn't add at the time because I could not figure out how it worked.

Polarization:

The different frequencies are triggered by different kinds of emotions and we can see the heart being affected by the electromagnetic fields. My theory is that this is the key to arcanist perception. This is how they "sense" emotions. They are picking up on these frequencies. For a real life example from the same article, look at these graphs showing how the influence of emotions:

Most people tend to think of communication solely in terms of overt signals expressed through facial movements, voice qualities, gestures and body movements. However, evidence now supports the perspective that a subtle yet influential electromagnetic or "energetic" communication system operates just below our conscious level of awareness. The following section will discuss data that suggests this energetic system contributes to the "magnetic" attractions or repulsions that occur between individuals.

Arcanists sense these waves and it can cause distress in them. Mesmer Jr. is a prime example of this. Other people's emotions get to her.

Now how does this tie into our beloved Timekeeper?

What if the reason Vertin has to stay "stoic" is because her emotions can influence the others around her and because she is extra susceptible to other people's incoming emotions. She needs to stay calm even in mental distress. Mesmer Jr. is also like this. She may come off as abrasive and snappy at times but she is described as a "an indifferent and refined machine" (Chapter 3: An Opened Sandwich). These two share a lot in common. They are both victims of trauma yet must operate in many emotionally taxing positions.

They even say "engraved in the heart" (although this could simply be word choice it really fits)!

Both Vertin and Mesmer Jr. struggle everyday to keep the their feelings at bay. Neither of them is "used" to this life but they have to keep up the facade for their sake and possibly for those around them.

The main story doesn't give us as much insight into Vertin's head but the traces do. She is always holding back, just like Mesmer.

Side note, do you remember the heartbeat we heard as Schneider was reversed? It raced. Interesting how later Schneider shows up in one of her dreams during Artificial Somnambulism. This could be an example of HF Polarization which generates strong and temporary mental images with very powerful emotions.

This also adds an extra layer to Vertin's interactions with others. She tried to get through to Druvis and Schneider, but as for Forget-me-not and Arcana, she didn't bother. Maybe their feelings of revenge and hatred are so tangible she knew it was lost cause. However, Druvis was laden with grief and loss. She was not a malicious person. Schneider was desperate and motivated by love for her family. Vertin even mentions she knew Madam Z was not part of Constantine's game by the "look in her eyes" and never blamed her for the loss of her friends.

Through the Ages: A look at the Roguneto ship.

Age of Apocalypse (Earth 295)

Set in an alt-timeline caused by a time travelling Legion, the ancient mutant Apocalypse has taken over the world and enslaved the human race; however not all mutants agree with Apocalypse’s tyrannic reign. A team of mutant freedom fighters know as the X-Men, led by Magneto, fight to save the world from Apocalypse nefarious hold. 

Rogue is a new recruit brought in by Mystique to help fight against Apocalypse. Rogue becomes Magneto’s second-in-command after both Jean Grey and Weapon X (Wolverine) leave the X-Men.

However, both Rogue and Magneto have developed romantic feelings for the other. Unbeknownst to Rogue, her current beau, Gambit, who is coincidentally Magneto’s best friend has previously commissioned Magneto to help find a way around Rogue’s powers. While interrupting a training session, Gambit asks Magneto to further research away around Rogue’s powerset. To which Magneto, knowing his own feelings for Rogue, reluctantly agrees to continue helping.

After sharing a rather intense personal moment while go over mission details, Rogue tries to speak with Magneto’s son, Pietro (Quicksilver) about her feelings for Magneto and her relationship with Gambit. Before anything could be said Gambit appears in front of the two, and after a quick exchange Rogue leaves to be by herself.

Rogue sees Gambit and Magneto speaking, about the aforementioned request, and asks to speak with Magneto alone. Once alone, Rogue reveals that to Magneto that she has feelings for him but doesn’t know if it’s right to act on them. Magneto reveals that while working on a way to neutralize Rogue’s powers, he discovered that he can create a biomagnetic shield around his body to shield from the affects of Rogue’s power, possible due to Rogue having permanently absorbed the mutant Polaris who shared Magneto’s mutant power of magnetism.

Before things can be further discussed the intruder alarms blares through the X-Mansion grounds and the X-Men quickly assembles to deal with the threat.

During the fight with “Wolverine”, Rogue chooses to save a injured Magneto from being killed leaving Gambit to be taunted by Wolverine. After the battle, Gambit decides to leave the X-Men after realizing that Rogue is in love with Magneto.

An undisclosed amount of time passes and we see that Rogue and Magneto are happily married with a son named, Charles.

However, due to the mysterious mutant Bishop arriving in their world and the startling revelation that their world is not the “correct” one. Rogue, now a leader of her own team, and the remaining X-Men kick into gear and take the fight to Apocalypse in the hopes of finally putting an end to his reign of terror.

After Apocalypse is defeated, knowing their world isn’t meant to survive, Rogue, Magneto, and their son Charles stand together as a bright wave of light sweeps over them.

In the 10th anniversary special it is revealed that the world of AoA, did not in fact die, but the phoenix possessed Jean Grey had saved everyone from certain death before vanishing.

When the people awoke to see that their world still stands they mistakenly believed that Magneto, in his battle with Apocalypse, found a way to save them all. Only Magneto knew the truth of Jean Grey but it kept it a long buried secret in order to focus on ridding the world of remaining factions loyal to Apocalypse and creating a new world where human and mutants can live in harmony.  This proved to be too much on his conscious over the years and when Sinister confronted him with the truth and a possessed Jean Grey herself, Magneto finally was able to clear his conscious and let himself be arrested (for lying or something, idk) leaving Jean Grey to be the leader once again. 

AoA was once again revisited In Uncanny X-Force vol 1.  X-Force of the 616  having traveled to AoA meet with the remaining X-Men of the world. It is now 10 years after the events of the anniversary.

Special note: There are discrepancies between the revisit to Earth 295 in X-Force and the two previous AoA stories as little matches up with the events of the special and several dead mutants from the original AoA are now mysteriously alive again and Magneto is no longer in prison or was even mentioned as being in prison.

During the Uncanny X-Force revisit, Apocalypse was revealed to be back but in the form of Weapon X (Wolverine) has become more dangerous than ever. After the 616 X-Force return home, it’s up to the AoA X-Men to deal with Weapon X. Sadly, Rogue and Magneto are killed by Weapon X before they can stop him from further destroying their world (as told in David Lapham’s 2012 AoA series).

The Relationship:

The relationship between Rogue and Magneto was very much one that was on equal footing both of them were devoted and loyal to each other to the end.

They were able to conceive and raise a son together something that would have been incredibly difficult given the structure of the world they lived in and the constant threat of attacked by the forces of Apocalypse.

Due to this constant threat Rogue became one of the leaders of her own strike team during the fight against apocalypse, something kept her away from her young son much to her disdain. Pietro, Magneto’s elder son, and Rogue became close friends and helped each other watch out for Magneto and Charles until Pietro’s death years later.

After Apocalypse was defeated and the world on the edge of re-building itself, both Rogue and Magneto were able to find a better balance between fighting the remaining apocalypse factions and raising a happy, healthy, normal 6 year old son.  

Throughout everything Rogue and Magneto remained fiercely protective of each other and their son. Even after the death of a 6-7 year old Charles Lehnsherr and Magneto’s paralysis, Rogue and Magneto stayed together until their untimely deaths at the hand of Weapon X.

What are some mutation type quirks you made that have a general inconvenience with them? I’m asking since I like the idea of a mutation type quirk changing the way a person has to live their life like for example Drum Palm you made makes it so the user has to be more careful with their hands and any of the animal mutation quirks have their own inconveniences while still being good quirks. So what mutation quirks did you make that you think add that sort of inconvenience or at least difference to the users normal life? Thank you for saying that. As for your question, a lot of Mutant Quirks fit that, honestly. This could be because I think a lot of how powers are in day to day life, but having powers on all the time is going to have all kinds of issues. It's just some are more prevalent.

As for what Quirks specifically fit that, besides the ones you mentioned, "Bulk" can cause undo damage to the user's surroundings, "Adaptation" is constantly changing the user's body, "Metal Bones" weighs you down constantly, "Poison Tips" makes a horrific poison form the user's head, "Ampathy" requires a lot of emotional control to work, "Biomagnet" can end up messing up metals around the user, "Hard Rock" covers the user's body in a lot of tough rocks, and that's not even mentioning sensory Quirks like "Nosey", Sonar", and "Ambiance".

Oftentimes during the late hours of the night when most of Bruce’s friends either slept or were need elsewhere, he patrolled the waters of the southern edge of the Great Barrier Reef. The route kept his mind occupied, harnessed and secured from being left alone with his own thoughts. Loneliness was such a devastatingly strong current, whipping wildly and dragging anything and everything into a downward plunge. 

Patrols kept the loneliness at bay. 

Bruce’s presence also helped keep mesopredators like barracuda and groupers on the move, and away from idling in his fish friends’ neighborhoods for too long. For the most part, the waters were empty of active creatures; most of the ‘noise’ that Bruce felt originated from fish and the likes curled up in their burrows and dens. 

It wasn’t until Bruce descended just far enough that full moon was nothing more than a speck of white obscured by the undulating ripples and currents at the surface, that he sensed someone else in the water with him. It wasn’t an odd feeling, per se; the euphotic zone-- or sunlight level zone of the ocean-- was home to a myriad of creatures, including the denizens of the coral reef which Bruce guarded closely. Even so, the shark could sense through his snout’s ampullae of lorenzini that something moderately large occupied a space quite close to him. The little jelly-filled pores running up and down Bruce’s lateral line could pick up on numerous things: from muscular contractions as quiet as heartbeats to the world’s biomagnetic fields, and even to the electrical pulses generated by living things. 

And this living thing was about the size of a human, but Bruce hadn’t picked up on a human scent in the water. 

Self-preservation urged Bruce to flee; but curiosity advanced his body closer to the source, feeling the creature’s heartbeat amplify along his lateral line as he drew nearer.
