As a queer servicemember who did serve during dadt that got out the year before it was repealed - FUCK DADT, it ruined lives and fuck the fact that it took so long for our military members to get their dishonorables changed and the fact that they left homosexuality on the new dd214s so former service members still had it follow them.
As someone who has never served myself and only has internet research and old Navy stories from my grandfather and cousin and one former coworker who was briefly in the army to go by, and every single one of them is cishet, I appreciate your input immensely. and, quieter, thank you for this, specifically, because this is exactly my point, I just don't have all the exacts to back it up like this. I've been doing my best to not rant about it and start things because it's about a fictional character it isn't that deep but also... considering how many people it affected in real life, yes it is.
I can't tell if you're yelling at me, specifically, or just using the anon function in my inbox to protect yourself from the fandom having different opinions (I get that, zero judgement whatsoever, I've been doing that a lot the last ~week just so I can have my opinion out there and avoid the backlash that comes with that and protect my sanity), but I'm going to put my own thoughts here, too, either way, because I feel like we're on the same page?
I know that using DADT seems like an easy out for speedrunning Tommy's timeline and making him younger than he would logically be to fit Lou's age (45 isn't old and 45 doesn't "look" all that different from 39 unless you're being ageist but whatever), but it's really not. There are so many complications that come with it - such as a dishonorable discharge.
Someone reblogged one of my posts earlier this week (the same person my vague post was about today, and I'll keep it vague I'm not here to call people out directly this is my blog and I'm going to put my opinion on it, no one should go harassing this person about any of it because it's fictional characters, they're allowed to have different opinions and headcanons about things), with a comment about how the LAFD (and PD? it's less relevant and I don't want to scroll back in their blog or my notifs for something minor like that) was hiring people regardless of sexuality in the 90s. Good for them! That doesn't change the dishonorable discharge tho!
Like... please correct me if I'm wrong, because again, I have no personal experience with any of this, just too much time on my hands and too many military blorbos, but when a dishonorable discharge shows up on someone's record, it doesn't necessarily say why it's there. It doesn't say if it's related to DADT or some other incident in the field or whatever it is. So yes, while the LAFD might have been hiring queer people far sooner than that, they still aren't going to look at a guy who has a (recent!) dishonorable discharge and say "yeah, we're going to put him through our training, which costs taxpayers x amount of money, and then hire him and pay him to have someone's life and death in his hands."
DADT and all the discharges that came from it completely ruined lives and made going on with any kind of career, especially something for the government even on the level of firefighting or police work, all but impossible. It's not an easy out to make Tommy the same age as Lou. It's actually completely nonsensical because he never would have been allowed to even get within 100ft of the fire academy, let alone be a senior member of a firehouse in 2009 when Hen joined the 1118.
There is a reason it's called a dishonorable discharge, and it would have completely ruined his life, no matter what the reason was for it.
(also, re: the game I play with Kit and Cass, the complaint this morning puts Tommy's age at 55 💛)

#i spend so mad god damn time bitching on this website. its bc i dont talk to ppl. whens the last time i had a non functional conversation?#uuuuhhh last weekend or maybe the weekend before that? so like i gotta complain somewhere. so if i stop complaining u can assume i made#friends lmao. ugh. its just. im worried. im worried abt how this semester is gonna go. how this phd program is gonna go#bc i spent the last 2 years destroying myself. realized ive gotta stop doing that. haven't figured out how to stop and now im gonna triple#the amount of pressure im under while trying to do things in a more healthy way. its just like. it objectively doesnt seem like a formula#for good things to happen. im more worried for how catastrophic its gonna b on my brain than i am abt the things i think most ppl would b#concerned abt. like im not worried abt planning and executing a project or teaching beyond fear of the unknown#its like. ive done these things before. theyre difficult but u make due and tackle the problems. but when it comes to: how to maintain a#healthy school/life balance? i dont even kno where to start with that. i just dont bc when u have a learning disability things just take#more time but like how much time is too much? where does it end? i dont kno how to manage it and i dont wanna hate my project by the end#of this. i want to b excited and not paralyzed bc im afraid i cant change my behavior and its gonna kill me#and im worried bc im meeting with my advisor for the 1st time since march before i agreed to join thr lab and have i prepared for this#project which is almost complete unrelated to what i did in my last lab? no bc ive been managing data and im still not done managing data#bc i cant focus bc i collected that data in a way that was actively self destructive. and i mean i kno itll b fine. thr guy seems nice i#just hate that im showing up devoid of enthusiasm bc its all been drowned out by the fear. and thats also gonna make teaching a problem#bc its hard to b excited abt things when there's a hole in your chest and ur desperate for someone to tell u how to fix it. but idk helping#ppl does usually make me feel better so maybe itll b a good thing. forgot how much i feel like im dying when i sit in meetings and#classroom tho lol. god its been 2yrs since i was a student. classes feel like such bullshit now. and yet if i dont get all As i might die#my students better b good. i have the 1st lab section bc thr lead ta couldnt do that time. so im the trial lab and i start fucking Monday#who tf does labs the 1st week of class? ugh. also its an intro bio so like 2/3 of thr class r freshman. lil bby 18yos and some r non bio#majors. and ive been warned that sometimes there r problems with ppl who don't believe in evolution and cause problems. pls let my classes#b good. im not that worried. its just gonna b annoying as fuck. im not good at being authoritative#ugh. i should b reading papers so i dont look like too much of an idiot tomorrow. itll b fine im just an anxious freak. a lil over a week#until i can try to find a therapist. probably seek medication bc i dont kno how else to stop this bullshit. annoying. i grew up with a dad#who gets anxious abt the idea of taking too much medication when he tskes a single ibuprofen. in this household we feel pain and then we#die miserable. this is all his fault. we have the same brain.im just a lil more irradidic than him#its so funny i say that bc im like the least irradic person ever. i do the same things every god damn day. im just irradic in terms of#sometimes i feel like my brain is on fire and im a cry bby lol#whatever. enough bitching. ive got papers to read. or maybe ill just go to bed and read them tomorrow 🙄#unrelated

Idk who I’m making this post for, feel like i just wanna get my thoughts down. If anyone wants to comment they’re welcome to
Just played Oblivion for the first time ever, put almost 5 straight hours in….
Would it be weird to say it managed to make me feel homesick for Skyrim?
Idk man it’s not bad and maybe once I get a better grip on the mechanics it’ll be better but not only am I immensely lost with how the personality/speech skills work as well as generally confused by almost everything, but Oblivion’s map layout just feels so….lonely. Barren and lonely. It made me sad lmfao I saw Skyrim on the map and was like omg home :,(
I don’t hate it though! I just think I have to get used to it, though I can’t stand having to figure out the 4 or 5 inventory/journal tabs, I’m so so so confused by them
I do appreciate the automatic dual wield with weapons and magic, wish they kept they in Skyrim. Felt the same way about that particular mechanic when I saw original Bioshock used it after already playing Bio Infinite first
I am however having a BLAST with the battle music cut-out and the way characters absolutely either rag doll or launch when you kill them and the infamous zoom-in on faces <3
I think, everything else aside, my main frustration is how lackluster quests are compared to skyrim. It just doesn’t have the same urgency, and the way they’re organized in the tab feels like they’re hidden away sort of? Idk something about Oblivion just isn’t encouraging me to go and explore or talk to people or do quests the way Skyrim does
I am aware that these are practically two completely different games despite sharing developers and lore/storylines but when it’s a game from a specific series usually you expect that they’ll have at least a similar vibe. Oblivion struck me the same way Morrowind did, which is that it’s lacking in the same excitement I feel playing Skyrim
But again, I understand why! There were YEARS between these games and a lot has changed and they’ve gotten better at art style, mechanics, etc which therefore will produce different games. I really really really wanna enjoy Oblivion (I’d also like to enjoy Morrowind but god that felt almost tedious) so if anyone sees this and has advice for how best to enjoy Oblivion (minus mods! Wanna finish it normally first) I would greatly appreciate it

okay .. so i’m about to put out a starter call (even though yes i know i shouldn’t with how much i owe but i really need to get muse flowing bc i’ve been struggling & i think this will help), but i also realize callie nor raine’s bio’s are up yet. nor is my info for my mcu gwen, so i’m gonna list like the basics here so if people are interested in them they can have the info & yeah -
callie:
was raised by a single mother, but when she turns 19 she discovers her mother is not actually her biological mother & kidnapped her as a baby. after being justifiably upset by this, she leaves home & sets off to find her birth mother. as she does she ends up meeting a man who is significantly older than her - he … grooms her, & the two enter a relationship. when she finally gets to where her birth mother is supposed to be, she finds out she actually passed away a few years ago. the guy is very unsympathetic to her & it’s clear there’s only one thing on his mind even while she’s sitting there heartbroken, this kind of opens up her eyes to him & what he’s been doing to her. she leaves him behind & ends up moving in with a girl her age she meets at a cafe. nowadays she’s living in her own apartment a few down from the girl & making a living for herself with a job with the local newspaper & is lowkey working on autobiography. she’s kind of guarded, closed off, after everything she’s been through it feels easier to keep people at a distance. but behind that facade she’s vulnerable, smart, caring & a fantastic storyteller.
raine:
a girl who’s very much a happy-go-lucky type, friendly, optimistic, enthusiastic & fun-loving. but … this has kind of made her stand out, most people finding her personality a bit ‘off-putting’, as it seems like ‘too much’. even amongst her own family, her parents scoffing & rolling their eyes at her antics & her older sister making comments about wanting a ‘normal sister’. she can also be a bit reckless at times, especially with the fact that she actually discovered at a young age she has magical abilities (she tends to keep this a secret though, even from her family). raine appears as though she doesn’t care what others think, but words do hurt sometimes. & never having really fit anywhere isn’t a great feeling. nowadays though she lives away from her family, trying to find her place in the world & find people who don’t turn their noses at her, with a job as a cocktail waitress & a maltipoo called butterfly.
mcu gwen:
basically is in the grade above peter, was blipped. was on peter’s side from the sidelines when the mysterio stuff came out. her father passes away senior year & instead of going away to college ends up staying in nyc to help her mother take care of her brothers & just generally so they could still have each other, etc.
