One of the top ten funniest/best experiences of being a (any creative field) creator online is seeing someone tag/comment something completely different than the intended message or subject of the art/photo/story was, and it genuinely doesn’t matter if it’s not what you intended for them to experience with the thing because they got something out of it and as wild and out of left field as it is, it’s just… good.

And I don’t mean people who do the willingly misunderstand no reading comprehension and likes to yell at people thing.

I mean someone tagging suburbs on a photo of an extremely rural house. I mean someone writing an entire mini fic about an art piece that is so far from anything you were thinking of when you drew it but it’s got that heart and soul. I mean someone tagging their masc af bestie in a post about sparkly magical girls with ‘this you?’ and you can’t tell if it’s irony or genuine gender fuckery or both. I mean ship or fandom tags from 900 fandoms away on your Marvel ship art. I mean those ‘that’s me’ tags on frog pictures. I mean the seemingly random stories of life events someone went though that are followed up with the person looking concerned in the drive through window jpg. I mean the ‘wish that was me’ tag on an anime clip of someone burning alive. I mean shared experiences and ‘damn bitch you live like this?’

It’s all good. I’m beyond thrilled that you experienced something. I don’t know what it is, sometimes, but that doesn’t matter. You experienced something. And I just think that’s cool af.

I am still working on it, I'm just struggling to overcome this last hurdle with a script in addition to battling with my ADHD that has decided to make working on it difficult. I want to say that it'll be released soon-ish, but it's likely that I will be releasing other projects before releasing Sphynx Khajiit. Drawn to Life

I remember playing this game as a kid. I borrowed it from my brother and I enjoyed it. Now sixteen years later I played it again and realized that I didn't appreciate it nearly enough. This game is so delightful from the characters, the story, even the art style. I could gush about this for an entire review, so I'll do just that.

The main plot follows two child hood friends named Mari and Jowee calling upon the god of their world to help revive their village that has fallen to a darkness that came about from a fellow villager deciding that he can do better than god and stole a powerful holy relic eventually destroying it causing the world to fall into ruin. By the time the game proper starts, the world is nearly done for being stuck in an eternal winter with the sun gone. All seems lost until the creator starts talking to Mari as she's having a crisis of faith. Yeah this game has some religious themes, but because of the setting, it is pretty easy to put aside and it doesn't really push one religion over another. If anything they're more allegorical to any real life religion.

In game you play as a hero created from a mannequin that you can draw on, but in reality you are the creator of this world. I am a god with the ability to doodle dicks all over the world.

Given the stakes at hand I decided I needed to take it very seriously, so I made a blue fox with read hair that I named Bingus. The drawing mechanic is more of a gimmick in this game, and is not really a focus of the game play. Really its more of a standard plat former, it's a pretty solid one though. Each level is simultaneously a rescue mission for three villagers and a hunt for pages of the book of life. You can't complete the level without those two missions complete. Each group of villagers has one named and the other two are more generic.

Art style wise, we have that classic pristine DS pixel art going on. The environments have a lot of detail, and I also noticed that with just a little bit of care, you can make your own creations fit in pretty well. Something fun about the named villagers is that they have their own unique animations that pretty well convey their personalities. For example there is a thief whose animation is constantly looking over his shoulder, there's a security guard who is clearly inspired by the secret service who is always on his phone, no doubt going over the security detail, there's an astronomer who's always looking up while shielding his eyes from the sun.

The enemies are also just wonderful on the eyes. The common enemies the Baki, this game's equivalent to goombas, are just so adorable and are so expressive, I love them and would end society for them. There are also the shadow enemies created by the main villain, they give the feeling of being simultaneously being made from ink and smoke. The animation and the designs of the enemies are just something I can't help but to just stop and look at. It's just so pleasant on the eyes. Which has also cost me a number of lives.

Story wise it really sticks in my head. It has a progression in how things get more serious. The mood is tied to the mayor and his office, at first he gives off more the feeling of just trying to provide sanctuary from a dying world, but eventually his mood changes to "by Ducky's balls we actually have a chance to end this nightmare!" There is a subplot running throughout of Mari being propped up as the next mayor after her dad steps down at some point in the near future. Apparently the office of the mayor is hereditary here. She goes through an arch of impostor syndrome believing that she's not good enough for the title that is never fully resolved in this game, in fact it carries over into the next. (Spoiler alert) This makes the scene where the Mayor is murdered a heart wrenching moment. A character who is always there at the end of every level and mission who becomes a point of stability in the village is suddenly gone.

There are also plenty of moments of levity in between missions, one example is near the beginning of the game while the village is coming out of winter, the mayor sees Mari and Jowee throwing snowballs at each other and decides to have a village wide snowball fight. It's one of those moments I keep remembering, because it was just the villagers trying to keep their spirits up after watching the world crumble around them. Another point is when Mari and Jowee start getting theological about how the creator watches over the world, and Jowee ends up describing a DS. They know too much, I must smite them, BINGUS GET THE BINGLAR!

I mentioned this in the review I did on the Wii sequel, but this game has great respect for its audience. This is an E rated game on the DS but it doesn't use that as an excuse to cut corners with writing. Sure its a simple story with a coloring book gimmick, but peppered in it are details and moments that just tell me this game really cares about what its putting out there. It doesn't talk down to you, it doesn't handhold you, it treats you with respect no matter your age. I absolutely recommend this game.

Ravnica D&D Campaign: The Characters (2)

Our second entry for the group is a character on a very different wavelength. This player agreed to play d&d more for the company than anything else, so he wasn’t particularly choosy about his character and doesn’t really care about the mechanics that much. As such, I helped him come up with some ideas and backstory, and I must say I’m pretty satisfied.

Bingus Babolax III--Goblin Artificer

My friend is basically a goblin irl when it comes to social interactions anyways, so I figured might as well embrace it. He immediately was onboard with the idea of playing a goblin, but unlike Cornelius he didn't really know what he wanted for his backstory. I figured it was probably a good idea to keep it simple, but I didn't want it to be un-important. So, the end result is that Bingus has lived a relatively comfy life so far, as the son of Dingus Babolax II (yes, I know that's not how numbers in names work), a clever Izmundi. Bingus is the only one in the group that has completed a higher education (at Prism University) and is quite smart, though his common sense is sometimes lacking. He wants to become an Izzet like his dad but so far has not been able to convince the guild he's worthy to enter. Before the campaign starts, he and his dad live in the Blistercoils area. He's a skilled tinkerer and a very social guy, though he doesn't really have any friends, only former study-mates. He unfortunately feels a lot of pressure to excel at what he does due to his heritage (his grandfather was also a great Izzet mage, an Izmagnus even, and is credited with the creation of Gelectrodic Weirds), so he tries to compensate by being really friendly.

Splatoon Rambles: Read At Your Own Expense

Do anemones get to know their fish before they form a bond with them? Like do they go on something like fish finder dot com or is it just “This is bingus, we found each other in the tesco parking lot and he wouldn’t leave me alone, now we’re friends.”

Are there Turf War video games? Are there like professional e-sports tourneys for it? Is there a Splatoon equivalent of EA that keeps making shitty Turf War games?

Speaking of video games, I know it’s a Nintendo game and they can’t legally show other consoles (and don’t even want to allude to them at all), but I think it’d be funny if in this universe before all of humanity was wiped out Nintendo became the Disney of video games. Like historians looked into the “console wars” and saw how Nintendo prevailed and said “This is what we will model all of our tech on.”

How come birds and sea life only got to live through the aftermath of nuclear war? I understand that the sea creatures evolved but how did the birds survive and not evolve? Why not reptiles? And how come aquatic mammals got the axe as well? I dunno I just think it’d be funny if whales, dugongs, or manatees were domesticated and kept as livestock.

Are there also non-intelligent sea life specifically for eating? Or is it artificial meat? Soy meat? Hotlantis sells (presumably) soy cheese and they probably grow soy like crazy, right? Do they even know what real meat tastes like? Does this mean the population is naturally lactose intolerant?

At what point does the modern sea creature calendar start? If each game takes place during the year of its release, were they fully evolved at the point of “year zero?” What happened before that and when did they decide that the “mollusk era” started? Was there a squid Jesus? (Squesus?) Does the population even have religion? Are there arguments about the creation of sea life and if evolution should be taught in schools?

If an inkling/octoling/whatever were to go back in time and visit an aquarium, would it be considered educational or controversial?

The Ricauli pantheon was formed from the tales brought back by Bram of the four Dragons of Creation who keep the Monarchs of Destruction sealed away. Though his version of the story made things sound more like the Monarchs’ imprisonment was unnecessary or cruel, leading to these versions being seen as beings of equal stature, rather than one set preventing the other from destroying everything. The current iteration of the religion has the Dragons as being lazy and the Monarchs as overly passionate, so the Diamond Guardian is needed to motivate or stop them, respectively.

The Gods of Quderemasa are said to have chosen the family and given them the divine right to rule the world. They have animal heads in much the same way the real-world Egyptian gods do. Urbs Magna is considered the head of the pantheon. Each of them, including Honesta, have an associated constellation that can be found in the night sky. The Circle is therefore the closest equivalent to Earth’s Zodiacs, with each deity claiming twenty-two-and-a-half days in ascendance. The equinoxes and solstices are special holidays that celebrate the parts of the pantheon that appear in that season. When two gods are ascendant at the same time, they have their own celebrations based on which two gods are prominent..

Afernai: The Duality of the World

The two gods of Afernai stand at opposites to each other in all things (except that both are considered very attractive). Part of the religion is that Sefka seeks to possess the unrivalled beauty that is Terrenith.

Terrenith, Goddess of birth, creation, growth, generosity, etc.

Sefka, God of death, destruction, decay, selfishness, etc.

People pray to Sefka when they’re going to war, on a hunt, or when slaughtering food animals, whereas they would pray to Terrenith for a bountiful harvest, a successful birth, or a grand construction.

Because of the male/female divide of Terrenith and Sefka, the culture of Afernai is similarly divided (which will be expanded upon in the Afernai entry of this series of posts).

Ahcos: The Philosophy of the Eternal Spirit

For a long time, the only “god” of Ahcos was The Guardian of Order, until the Chosen of Ahcos returned from her otherworldly adventure and spoke of three beings she heard of but never met, and the stories of these powerful elemental beings gave rise to the other three gods. In addition, they believe in a world called “Droker Kishaka,” which is a metaphysical realm made of dreams, fears, hopes, and nightmares, where the souls of the dead go to their punishment or reward as well as where new souls are born.

Ancient’s only god was actually a regular person once, but has long since been deified into being responsible for creating the entire continent of Boru Khan, rather than just the creation of the Ancient Laws and thereby the Ancient Kingdom itself.
