This is absolutely a beloved looper! I love them dearly. Really excellent mohawk. And yes, looks to me like a bilobed looper, Megalographa biloba :)

Bilobed Looper Moth - Megalographa biloba

Oh my, what have we here?

Today's strange-looking specimen was sent to me by a very dear friend of mine from her mom's garden. I'm very grateful for it, especially when it contributes to a new specie for the blog, and one that is somewhat uncommon in Canada, but more on that later. When the wings spread out and ready for a takeoff, they appear as typical Lepidopteran wings, well equipped to fly. When the wings are folded at rest the folds in the wings project upwards, giving this specie its unique appearance (and possibly a help when against trees and branches while camouflaging). The shape of the wing folding which results in those dorsal ornamentations immediately jogged my memory that this was a Looper Moth (subfamily Plusiinae; named for the inchworms "looping" as they move). In fact, it has a strong resemblance to the Common Looper! However, the Common Looper lacks a prominent and large "B-shaped" white spot on its wing accompanied by distinct white, curved markings, indicating this specie was something else.

Going back and forth with my friend, the large white, bilobed wing stigma eventually pointed us in the direction of M. biloba. With that big spot, identification is very easy. It seems to have once been classified as part of Autographa (like the Common Looper), but now sits in its own distinct genus, and is currently the only of its kind in North America, ranging from here in Southern Canada to the bottom of the United States. As mentioned before, the individuals found in Canada are uncommon as the climate is too harsh for them to overwinter. As such, the Moths migrate southward when warmth decreases and new adults return to Canada when temperatures become ideal throughout June and July. Just as as we do with the Monarch Butterfly, perhaps we should keep an eye on this specie too to see how its range changes overtime as temperatures change year to year. A Moth's perspective might be interesting to consider. Unlike the Monarch however, the Bilobed Looper can adapt to a wider range of habitats while there are healthy plants since it is a generalist feeder. Their Caterpillars can be sustained on a wide variety of plants, which has the potential to make them garden and commercial crop pests, much like other Owlet Moths. If you find rotund, heavy, green inchworms on your beans, cabbages and lettuces, maybe direct them to the dandelions instead.

Hi Cryptid! That's such a hard question!! I have so many!

I think my top one would have to be that Bilbo fell first, but Thorin fell harder. So hard, in fact, that when the gold sickness was poisoning his mind, it had to actively contend with how much Thorin had grown to love Bilbo. To that end, the only way the gold sickness was able to reconcile Thorin's love for Bilbo and the gold was to put them in the same category. It's why I believe he held Bilbo with such specific reverence even when he was suspicious of the rest of the company and why he descended so quickly after Bilob's "betrayal."

As of 2022, what is the most distant object explored by a spacecraft?

Arrokoth is a small, icy world located in the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune that is home to numerous dwarf planets and asteroids. Formerly known as Ultima Thule, Arrokoth was first discovered by NASA's 'New Horizons' spacecraft on 1st January 2019, during its historic flyby of the dwarf planet Pluto. After completing its primary mission of studying Pluto, 'New Horizons' continued its journey deeper into the Kuiper Belt, where it encountered Arrokoth. This encounter marked the farthest exploration of any object in the solar system.

Unlike other celestial bodies that have been subjected to significant geological activity or collisions, Arrokoth appears to have remained largely unchanged since its formation over 4.5 billion years ago. This makes it a valuable time capsule, offering scientists a unique opportunity to study the early stages of our solar system's development.

Arrokoth's shape is also of great interest to researchers. It has a distinct bilobed structure, resembling two spheres that have gently merged together. This unusual shape suggests that Arrokoth may have formed through a process known as "contact binary formation," where two separate objects gradually came together under the influence of gravity. Val Camonica, one of the largest valleys of the central Alps that runs across Brescia, Italy, is home to several dozens of rocks that bear the carving of a curious symbol now known as the Camunian Rose.

The design consists of some basic elements: nine cup-marks, which are always present and disposed in fixed forms, and a quadrilobate contour winding around them. There were determined three basic-types: the swastika type (its four arms bend of about 90°), the asymmetric-swastika type (two arms join together in a single bilobate arm) and the quadrilobate type (its arms are straight and symmetric).

The most frequent engraving related to the “camunian rose” is the warrior, which is usually placed on its side and is provided with a shield and a sword or a stick. The digital pads of the first and fifth digits of the mummy have the shape of a right triangle. The long side of the fifth digital pad is adjacent to the fourth digital pad. The shape of the second–fourth digital pads is subsquare, in contrast to the oval digital pads of the lion and other Felidae. The metacarpal pad is bilobed and bean-shaped.

Important: while this sabre-toothed kitten did not have toe beans (its toe pads are square-shaped or triangular), the main "palm" pad is bean shaped.

Also most of its toes have tufts of fur between them. The paper concludes its extremely wide paw, seen above in comparison to a modern lion paw, was designed for walking on snow.

In a monumental discovery for paleontology and the first of its kind "Mummy of a juvenile sabre-toothed cat Homotherium latidens from the Upper Pleistocene of Siberia"

Abstract The frozen mummy of the large felid cub was found in the Upper Pleistocene permafrost on the Badyarikha River (Indigirka River basin) in the northeast of Yakutia, Russia. The study of the specimen appearance showed its significant differences from a modern lion cub of similar age (three weeks) in the unusual shape of the muzzle with a large mouth opening and small ears, the very massive neck region, the elongated forelimbs, and the dark coat color. Tomographic analysis of the mummy skull revealed the features characteristic of Machairodontinae and of the genus Homotherium. For the first time in the history of paleontology, the appearance of an extinct mammal that has no analogues in the modern fauna has been studied.
