Shoutout to Maya's family in Echo, because every single one of them could sign. Now, it's true that none of them were especially great at it. I thought it was realistic that some of Skully's lines got really simplistic/stilted, because he didn't know how to say something in a more fluent manner. And when Henry was trying to interpret for Maya with the mortician, I liked the moment where she rattled off some medical jargon and he just shrugged.

But all of them signed, from Maya's grandparents, to her dad in flashbacks, to her uncle, to her cousins. I got the impression that Chula probably started the whole thing when Taloa was young, so Maya was born into an already-signing family. And that is huge. When I worked as an interpreter in a public school, I can't tell you how many kids I worked with who only had the chance to fully communicate with their parents on the few times a year they came to school for conferences/meetings and had access to an interpreter. 90% of Deaf people are born into hearing families, and so many of those families don't learn their Deaf child's language.

And keep in mind, Maya has been living in New York for 20 years. There's no mention of video chats with the family members she was still in touch with, so that means everyone kept up their signing for literal decades even though Maya wasn't around anymore.

I love that, besides the main benefit of being able to build a meaningful relationship with their granddaughter/daughter/niece/cousin, this knowledge helps them out in other ways. Skully covertly rags on Biscuits in front of customers in ASL when he's interfering at the pawn shop. Henry warns Bonnie off by discreetly signing at his side so Fisk's goons won't notice. Bonnie pretends to interpret for Maya with Fisk's goons but really communicates with her in secret so they can figure out how they're going to escape.

My favorite part about Spanish, besides the phonetic spelling, is that we (I’m not nearly fluent so I shouldn’t say that) they have two separate words for a bunch of things that English speakers only have one word for. Take “Haber” and “Tener”, for example. In English both translate to “to have,” but “tener” is in the sense of ownership/possesion, while “haber” is a helping word for certain verb tenses. e.g. “El ha hablado” “He has spoken.” There is no reason for these two different words (because they are different words semantically) to be the same word. Otherwise you get shit like “El habia tenido un perro.” “He had had a dog.”

Likewise, estar y ser both translate to “to be,” but there’s a somewhat vibes-based difference that is interesting. Estar is usually used in more impermanent condition-type expressions. “Estoy enfermo.” “I’m sick.” “Estas aqui.” “You’re here.” Ser is used for more permanent things. “Soy alto.” “I’m tall.” “¿Eres de los estados?” “Are you from the states?” I made this post because I saw potential in intentionally mixing these up, e.g. “Estoy Americano.” could be roughly translated to “I’m feeling American,” or “I’m American at the moment,” but realistically it’ll only read as a second-language mistake. Likewise “Soy triste.” might possibly be the simplest way I know of to express depression as I understand it.

There’s a set of words I can think of that fit the reverse concept. Specifically “of,” “by,” and “from” all translate to “de” in Spanish, which can lead to some goofiness. I remember speaking to a woman who said something like “This bread is made of him.” Which sounds like such a weird mistake to make, but the way one would say “made by him” is “hecho de el,” and the way one would say “made of flour” is “hecho de harina.” No distinct words for the two concepts, means they’re a lot easier to mix up. I couldn’t tell you when to use “por” rather than “para” because both of those are “for” to me. A native Spanish-speaker might mistakenly say “Do me a sandwich.” because “hacer” can mean “do” or “make,” or more accurately, in their own tongue it’s one idea, while in ours there’s two.

This post is aiming towards the psychology of language, which I am not at all equipped to babble over. With the number of times I had to check a Spanish dictionary while writing this, I can’t say I speak more than one language, let alone have any experience in thinking differently in different tongues, so I’ll leave things here.

Had to laugh so hard this morning - LO was allowed to watch some Netflix (at the moment he loves Lego City Adventures). I was taking a shower. He stormed in and was kind of mad…it turned out the audio setting was changed to German. And he didn’t like that at all. The same reaction I have watching a Friends episode in German. It just sounds wrong 😂.

He watches most of his stuff in English. There are some shows that are only available in German and he likes those too. But his ‚default mode‘ watching TV seems to be English at the moment.

We‘re at the dentist right now (he‘s getting his molars sealed today). He‘s really patient and doing great.

I’m a very proud Mum today ☺️.
