What if Thorin wrote a poem about Bilbo?

I like to think myself a great man,

Yet in your gaze, I find myself small.

You make me more than I was,

Therefore I am bound to you.

‘Thorin looked down at his One, and he saw how the only red in Bilbo’s cheeks were from his wounds. He was pale and sallow, and unmoving. He looked dead already. The sight was enough to encourage Thorin to get Bilbo out of the mountain. If others needed to touch him to heal him, so be it…but he would not leave his One’s side.’

Not gonna lie, I’m pretty happy with how this came out. I’m just trying to enjoy myself with my art right now, and not focus on making anything good necessarily…just enjoying the process… :3

The fact that The Hobbit is such a lighthearted family-friendly book, especially when compared to LOTR, actually breaks my heart when you consider that it is Bilbo’s writing. That journey was anything but a fun trip for him. He went through real dangers and horrifying moments. He saw violence for the first time. At the end of it, he lost his love. And he went home traumatized, heartbroken, and forever changed.

Yet when he wrote the story down, he emphasized the more successful and fun parts, and glossed over the depth of his pain and grief when the losses happened (even leaving Fíli and Kíli’s deaths to a throwaway line.)

Because what else could he have done? Nobody else could possibly understand his pain. Bilbo wasn’t like Frodo. He didn’t have a Sam who he shared the experience with and could talk to about it every day afterward, to help him work through writing down the details of the darker parts of the story. And his other friends lived far away and could only visit occasionally.

And the hobbit children were all full of wonder about Elves and dwarves and trolls, so he put the focus on that.

I feel like that was his way of dealing with his trauma.

Bilbo Baggins wakes from his head wound after the Battle Of The Five Armies in a seemingly foreign place surrounded by strangers with no memory of the last eight months. Stuck in the mountain until spring, he finds himself drawn to the broody dwarven king carrying a guilty heart.

Sometimes i never really realize just how crazy bilbo was. Like he tried to CONVINCE trolls into not eating his friends after being away from his house for the first time for like only a week. THIS GUY PICKED UP AN ACORN AT BEORNS AND CARRIED IT WITH HIM TO EREBOR. what was going on in that brain

I love comparing book Thorin and to movie Thorin especially when they first meet Bilbo and book Thorin lands flat on his face being crushed by Bifur, Bofur and Bombur, pulls out a beautiful harp that he’s been carrying the whole time to the shire and even after they leave the shire, gives compliments to Bilbo about being a generous host and talks about the hair on his feet and movie Thorin just saunters in looking like a sexy mysterious man in the night ready to whisk away poor Bilbo but his brain wasn’t working quick enough to keep up with the charade and insults Bilbo instead.

And I love both of them and would love it if they both met and thought the other version was a complete moron.

It blows my mind that by giving the mithril shirt to Bilbo, Thorin indirectly saved Frodo and thus prevented the Ring-bearer from dying and the Quest from failing. The world was ultimately saved because the exiled King Under the Mountain fell in love with a hobbit.
