Big fan of how a lot of the doctor’s closest companions have incredible amounts of similarities to the master. Clara is the obvious one, but I raise you, donna:

You know how the metacrisis doctor made that comment about donna shouting at the world because nobody’s listening. Missy says (in big finish: masterful) that she’s always been shouting at the world. I just wonder if the doctor gravitates towards people who are angry with the universe, who don’t feel listened to or respected, because that’s how the master always was. That resent, even though it’s expressed way differently in donna, is something the doctor finds familiarity and comfort in.

Donna feels average, she feels ignored and has deeply internalised that she’s nothing special, she spells that out pretty frequently. The master had a bizarre childhood, saxon describing it as a “life of duty” and never felt satisfied, they’re so unsatisfied that they’re end form in masterful is an entropy wave of pure hunger. They’re both resentful of the cards they’ve been dealt and their life. The doctor helps donna see her worth, and see the beauty in the universe. They couldn’t do that for the master. It was too late.

The doctor can never do what they did for donna for the master, they’re both some of his closest friends, but donna’s resent wasn’t too solidified by the time the doctor got to her, the master is bitter because of the doctor in many ways. They can’t listen because the master will never let them.

The doctor gravitates to people like the master, and always will. They were their first comfort and familiarity, their best friend (their crush). The master’s anger at the universe and same feelings of having to stand your ground and make people listen because otherwise they won’t (“well, why should they”) is something they will forever associate with their friend at the academy.

The doctor can tell donna that they belong together and she will agree, he can tell the master that and they’d never be caught dead agreeing, because they left them, and the master won’t make that mistake twice.
