NOIR CITY Xmas Returns!

Join host Eddie Muller on Tuesday, December 13, 7:30 p.m., at Oakland's historic Grand Lake Theatre for the return of NOIR CITY XMAS! The Film Noir Foundation presents Mickey Spillane's I, the Jury in 3-D to darken your yuletide spirit. The 1953 black & white film, featuring cinematography by the legendary John Alton, was recently restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive and stars Biff Elliot, Peggie Castle, and Preston Foster.

The evening will also feature the unveiling of the program (and poster!) for NOIR CITY 20, the 20th anniversary of the world's most popular film noir festival, coming to the Grand Lake Theatre January 20-29, 2023.

The Grand Lake Theatre's COVID protocol requires that the staff is masked and vaccinated, with protective shields at their workstations and that all guests must be masked when entering, exiting, or at their seats when not drinking or eating. Guests are not required to be vaccinated.

Tickets for NOIR CITY Xmas are now available online for $15 from Brown Paper Tickets and can also be purchased at the theatre box office on the day of the show.  Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. 3-D glasses will be provided!

This was the first film adapted from any of Mickey Spillane's novels and the first of two features based upon I, The Jury. The key scene in the previous tweet was not only reflected in the marketing for the movie...

... it has featured on the book cover of numerous editions.

I, The Jury has some impressive credits. Alongside writer-director Harry Essex there's cinematographer John Alton and composer Fran Waxman. The art direction is by Wiard Ihnen, Edith Head's husband. Alan Reed, later the voice of Fred Flintstone, is in the cast.

I'd love to see the film in 3D - it's the only 3D film shot by noir-master John Alton, I believe - but I've only had the pleasure of the two dimensional version. Still, Alton's deep black depths seem like they'd be perfectly menacing in stereovision.

That is Elisha Cook Jr. as Bobo the store Santa. He's not officially credited in the film. Obviously this is for the exact same reason Peter Jackson isn't credited in Hot Fuzz: to not spoil the magic for young children. That *is* obvious, right?

Finally, a little-seen treasure for those who have already seen the movie. In 2004, Biff Elliot sat down with his nephew Josh Shalek and recorded an audio commentary for the film's entire duration.

And this worst part of your fears was going to happen- that I suddenly waned to drag Cody into this little situation of ours, of course you'd know. If this going to work- we can't pretend that you don't get veto power on that sort of thing. But again- it's not going to happen because that's not likely.

I like sex. You know that- and we never put...rules down for what this was. Other than the simple fact that you should know by now that I'm yours. I don't know how many times you need me to say that. And there's that fear part of you again-

Me and Blaine are not going to run off together. For one thing you should see the way he talks about you. He gets this bright happy smile and adorable blush. Jealous of Cody? No, no, honey. Not jealous. Irritated that the flirtation somehow feels cheap if you're telling other guys the exact thing you tell me. And Blaine, for that matter. And it isn't me calling you a liar when you tell us that you have deeper feelings regarding us both over everyone else, absolutely not. But it is me wondering, at what point are you going to be saying those things about any other guy. Because this is a big deal and I've never done this before. What happens if I end up wanting to add Biff to this whole arrangement? Is that going to be a problem? Judging by your reaction, I'd say yes. And why would that be?

So I'm needing to know just how deep are you planning to get with one of your other 'randoms' before it turns not random anymore? If you were able to put yourself on the emotional feeling line for Blaine and I, who else? And do Blaine and I get to be in the know? And what happens if either of us aren't comfortable with that individual? Are you going to put that guy over us or....?

As I'm obviously dating Blaine exclusively, unlike you who is more open-ended in whatever this is, I won't be going and making out with Biff and whimpering for him to own anything. And Biff knows this. Because I love care deeply about Blaine and I'm lucky as it is that he chose me over everyone else. Seems too good to be true, actually, and as usual I'm waiting for the shoe to drop and for you two to run off together and leave me here lost on why I let myself be this vulnerable with another person - or persons in this case. This obviously involves you and Blaine, not just Blaine and I, or you and Blaine, or me and you. So forgive me if all I see is red when I feel you're just saying pretty words when I know you're also saying similar things to other guys. If you were feeling it that deep in the open, who knows what else you're saying behind closed doors when Blaine nor I are there to get jealous.
