Show Your Love For Barcus Wroot By Participating In This Collaborative Fanfiction Series of Barcus Wroot Ships.

The Premise

The idea is that Barcus is going to go through the game timeline and meet a lot of different people. Some of these encounters will cause some canon divergence, but the game timeline will be mostly kept. There will be smut, fluff, friendship - whatever you want to write! Each chapter will focus on a single partnering, with a title relating to it in the format “The Wroot of _____” in which the blank relates to the partner or the relationship between them. Writers signing up can volunteer for a listed character or add a new character to the list that they want to write about, and after the sign up period we will check the assignments and decide an order together.

How To Sign Up

Join the Tolna's Vault Discord Server (invite link above) and follow the link to the sign up spreadsheet featured in the Wroot of Romance event description, and pinned in the #the-wroot-of-romance-collab channel.

You will also need to have an AO3 account and share your username with us - there is a second tab in the spreadsheet with a table to add your aliases!

The table should be pretty simple to use. If there’s a character not on the list that you’d like to add, put them in a new row! You can also add title suggestions if you think of something fun, and we’ll all agree on the final titles that fit best when the event starts. There’s a column to volunteer to write a character, and you’re welcome to add your name here as long as you don’t remove anyone else’s without their permission - for now keep it to your Discord username from Tolna’s so we know who you are! We will add a column for AO3 names and other aliases later.

Each character will get one chapter written by one writer (unless two or more agree to collab on a single chapter together), and if several people have interest in the same character we can work it out in the server together.

Event Timeline

Sign ups will end on the 1st May to allow us a day or so to ensure we have the writers set up with their pairing(s). Then we will work together on an order/structure together so we know the chronological story - and release - order of everyone’s works!  The next deadline is the 10th May - by this date you will need a bullet point summary of your fic plan. That way, you can coordinate with the writers before and after you to ensure we have a cohesive story structure. We might also be able to reference - or even add foreshadowing! - from each others ideas so we can even have some real character development for Barcus as he goes on a very sexy adventure across the sword coast.

The first batches of submissions will be due in by the end of May, and the release schedule will be one chapter every few days through June/maybe July to stagger them for readers but also keep a nice steady flow until we reach the end.

It’s best to publish these as a Series on AO3 with each chapter as a new work (so your “chapter” can have multiple chapters if you need to, particularly if it runs long or you feel it needs a split in the middle to be more reader-friendly). This also means each person’s submission will have its own tags on it, and will be easier to find for those just looking for each individual pairing they like.

The Concept So Far

A chance encounter with Abdirak in act 1 will kickstart this fic series, as this crack ship sparked the idea. Abdirak (in his own unique way) will encourage Barcus to open himself up to new possibilities. And thus we begin Barcus' journey of self discovery and relationship building. Some of his encounters will be romantic, some platonic, some simply smutty. You get to write what you feel is best for the ship you choose.

The Rules

The main thing is to follow all the rules listed in Tolna’s server, make sure your works are tagged appropriately, but otherwise follow your hearts and dreams! Want to go full Dead Dove? Do it! As long as it fits the event, it’s fine. You can also go pure SFW fluff if you want, you don’t have to make it smutty at all unless you want to.

Do be mindful of the people following you directly in the series. You should be able to summarize the "important events" in your fic with as few triggers as possible so people can follow up from your story even if your content isn't to their taste. If you can summarize all your Dead Dove elements with "they had a wild night." you are free to write anything you'd like happening that night in the fic proper. Please try to stick close to the deadlines, but if you are struggling let someone know ASAP and we can work something out! Otherwise? Have fun!

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? I'm not really one for writing angst- I love to read it but I just can't bear to write anything besides a happy ending!

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending? They're all pretty happy, but I think the fic with the highest amount of sheer fluff would be The Floor is Molasses.

Do you write crossovers? Nah, I don't think crossovers are for me

Have you ever received hate on a fic? Definitely! Not so much on tumblr or AO3, but I've gotten some weird ones on FFN

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I've only posted one real smut fic, Sword Master (unless you count the smut-adjacent bits of Customer Service too) but tbh I'm not sure I'll post more in the future. Maybe one or two Burn Like Cold Iron extras when that fic is finally done, but otherwise I probably won't go above an M rating again. You know how people tend to look hotter in lingerie than fully nude? That's usually my take on smut XD the scene turns out hotter if I leave a bit to the imagination lol

Have you ever had a fic stolen? I hope not!

Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope! But I'd be very flattered

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Not officially, but @sotwk and I wound up writing a back-and-forth Eomer/OC thing via tumblr ask boxes lol- Eomer's letter and a response, and I'm always down to keep the collab going!

What's your all-time favorite ship? Eowyn/Faramir, but outside of Tolkien maybe Jaime/Brienne from ASOIAF

What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will? I do my best not to post anything I'm not confident I can finish!

What are your writing strengths? I'm terrible at complimenting myself but I'm trying to be better- let's see I think I'm getting better at dialogue, particularly capturing different characters' voices. I think I can infuse dry humor into my fics pretty well too (although sometimes this happens by accident, rendering a dramatic scene goofy)

What are your writing weaknesses? I'm slow as hell. I cannot focus for the life of me. BUT I'm getting my hands on some adderall so hopefully that will help in the future XD

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I think my favorite method in fics is when writers don't translate the other language, or at least not directly, and let the other characters and setting reveal the words' meaning through context. Personally I try to avoid it entirely, just because I don't know any words in Tolkien's languages lol

What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to? I'm such a slow writer that I want to stick to LOTR for now, but someday I might snap and write something for BG3 lol (there's no regency AU fics for Wyll?? Are you kidding me?? I'm going to commit murder)

What's your favorite fic you've written? Burn Like Cold Iron is always my (predictable) answer, but among my less popular fics, Chicken Soup for the Soul is an old favorite, as well as Something Burrowed, Something Blue.

Hehehe it's barely getting started but there's already 5 chapters up 😁 Cal is a mechanic who plays rugby and draws in his spare time. Astarion is a co-star. Lia is featured heavily eventually, as well as Dammon, Rolan and Zevlor. Gortash will be in there, and Raphael and Cazador. Most of our standard OCs are in it, including Ryldinn, Nienna, and @crowwolf OC Kitalia. We've also come up with a few new OCs.

The thing is going to be an episodic serial after the initial long fic introduction. We even have a goofy logo and a silly 80s title.

I was poked to do this months ago, twice at least - once by @docholligay and I think the second was @jeejyboard, but I can't find the tag for the life of me. SORRY. I felt like doing something a bit more meta today re:writing and post about The Process, and this was a perfect excuse - thanks for thinking of me. So here's some actual effort! I went and dug deep, trawled through some really old stuff, which was fun. I write and scribble down way, way more than I actually polish and post (which I assume is probably normal, but who knows). 

General info, for whoever is interested: I mostly use Google Docs with offline backups for fic writing, as I shift between computers a ton, and I put fandom tags at the start of my filenames for organisation. I have a ton of prompt/meme/ask/event collection files - for example, the very latest: "[BG3, STRAHD, SM] Fic Prompts 2024". In these I jot down both the prompts people send or that are listed and the ideas/outlines/notes for each, then when I really get going with a certain fic I spin it off into a separate document. 

I hate coming up with titles and usually do that last, so most of my document names are silly references for my own amusement or just a boring old brief description of the main concept. For instance, my latest posted fic Cerimonia Compedum was for most of its WIP-hood known simply as "[BG3] Tadpoled Isobel". Sometimes I keep different versions/revisions/parts of the same WIP in different files, and if that's the case I've grouped them here. Note that for simplicity's sake this post includes my "solo" fic only, no collabs or coauthored stuff, of which there is also a bunch. 

Some of these are ancient and hit me in the face with "12 years ago" timestamps. Some ficlets will never make it out of the mixed prompt plot bunny dumping grounds into their own doc. I think Sailor Moon 10-ish years ago was the one outlier fandom where I actually wrote most of my concepts out fully and posted them. The ol' brain is currently overproducing stuff for the more recent BG3 flavoured moon lesbians (and no, that ship name will never stop throwing my HaruMichi-loving ass for a loop). Note that some of the SU WIPs on the list I've already posted about here, here, here, and here.

Obviously all of these vary wildly in terms of completion level, word count, refinement, and age (and capitalisation, apparently). So yeah, here's the list, roughly sorted by fandom - ask away, if you feel like it!

The Choices We Made -- (Borderlands 3/Rhack fix it) This work got me through the pandemic & set me on the path to make a few of my best friends.

A Memory I Keep Having -- (Borderlands/Rhack whumptober collab with one of those best friends) I put my whole heart & soul into this thing. It didn't do very well compared to some of my other works in that fandom, but the fact that didn't bother me only makes me love it more.

(ngl, I love so many of my rhack works because I worked on so many with friends or for friends, it's hard to narrow that one down, but I did it lol)

Wandering in the Dark -- (DA, f!mage Trevelyan/Cullen,1930s noir/dystopia twist on the events of DAI) I left DA on a sour note, but still made some great friends there & this work was a nice ending note. That said, I fully expect Veilguard to suck me back in.

And then I'm going to add on a couple of my unfinished favs/current main wip to the list:

Hell & You (Tavstarion/BG3 Hades/Persephone AU) This is my self-indulgent passion project. Something I don't expect people to love, but something *I* love dearly. Any given moment I'm currently thinking about this one & wishing I could write faster.

Then another fav/unifinished work is The Empire & the Sun (Borderlands/Rhack Kingpin AU). I'm hoping to go back to this one someday & finish it because it was also a self indulgent passion project. I just got burned out & needed something new

highest hit oneshot: Same as above. Second most was a RolanxTav commission I did with 430 hits. It also was one I didn't spend a whole lot of time on.

new things I tried: Getting back into fanfic writing for the first time in over a decade was good enough for me!

fic I spent the most time on: Time and Again by virtue of being long fic. My baby~

fic I spent the least time on: By design, Tryst. It was a challenge to myself to only spend an hour on it. I also purposely didn't advertise it due to this, lol. But I like it!

favorite thing I wrote: Time and Again is naturally the top of the list. My best writing and most effort goes into writing it. But A Night to Forget is the one shot of mine I reread most often. It doesn't get a lot of readers because a) it's M/M/F, b) it leans VERY HARD into the awkward, and c) it doesn't have a happy ending, but I'd rank the quality of writing up there with TAA.

Additional shout outs to Lakrissa's Makeshift Tattoo Parlor, which was just plain fun to write, and The Price of Tav's Love, which performed about as well as I thought it would (lulz) but was a fun challenge.

favorite thing(s) I read: So unfortunately a lot of times I have to pick between using my time for reading or for writing, and writing won out this year. But shout outs to a few I liked:

Only an Apron by @threerattsinatrenchcoat (Cal x Geraldus smut, my beloved. But, really, anything Ratt writes is absolutely wonderful. I cannot recommend them enough.)
