old take i know but im still obsessed with the idea the real reason that ryan is surrounded by skeptics or people who are on the fence is because they are all really supernatural beings that are just there to protect him from other ghost and beings so he doesn’t killed by his own idiocy
Before Mystery Files braves the algorithm this Friday, thought I’d do a quick check-in with the Watcher viewcounts.
First and foremost, WWW has cooled down a bit. It’s in line with the first six weeks of original WWW eps, Mystic Museum and Soda Pals, and better than the rest. Older eps have cooled off too, although they really did get significant boosts there for awhile. My personal opinion about WWW’s future is that if they get sponsors for it, it may become a travel show (like the Montana episode) but is dependent on their schedule and being sponsored. Still, I will be holding out hope for an Iowa State Fair WWW because it would be a delight to me personally.
As you can see, the second season of Worth a Shot has not blown the doors off. Sad because I liked the changes to the format a lot, bringing in Mari as a co-host, having a couple episodes with a Steven battle.
New season of TMS is right in line with last year’s, so it’s nice to see it be consistent. Also last year’s got a nice little boost.
Ghost Files continues to do banger numbers every week, particularly the Hobo Hill House finale. Last week it got 81k views, which is almost as much as the new WAS did.
Mystery Files starts this week! My official prediction is that it will do quite well, but not Ghost Files level. This is based on my BFU viewcounting, where True Crime and SPN were quite equal in viewers until the last couple years when SPN became a more statistical favorite. TC often really popped off based on subject, so I’ll be interested to see if that follows here.
I’m excited for MF to do well for a few reasons. First, obviously, I want all their series to do well. Second, having seen the premiere on Patreon last week, I can confirm that it’s a very good show with amazing production and it truly feels like a Team Watcher show and not necessarily Team Ryan/Shane/Steven/whoever. It’s very collaborative! And third, because MF is made in-house without travel expenses, the better it does means the more the company can do travel videos or take chances on other creators or new concepts.
For posterity, as of May 15, 2023, Watcher has 2.53 million subscribers, 274 videos, and 283,468,098 views. That averages to 1.034 million views per video. This is up from 1.018m views per video from December.
I was tagged by the lovely and talented @titleleaf!
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favourite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers.
I'm gonna try not to just reproduce the same list from the last time I did this (although I can't fucking find it, so who knows), and also shine the spotlight on some that I think don't get as much attention but that I'm still very proud of anyway!
(But also, the road goes ever on. It's always gonna be the road goes ever on.)
1. house rule #3 (MCU Thor, Avengers [2012])
“Darcy,” Jane says, firmly. “Breathe.”
“I am totally breathing,” Darcy protests. “Look, after you offered me the job, she bought us a bottle of sparkling wine and thanked me really cryptically and I basically haven’t seen her since. And in that time, Selvig’s dropped off the map, and a supervillain calling himself Loki who could be her fraternal twin pops up and starts chewing German scenery in a helmet that looks exactly like the one in this book.” Darcy sits back in her chair, bouncing off the back. “Also, I told her about this professor who was a total pain in my ass, and like two weeks later he was on leave for ‘undisclosed reasons’ and he still hasn’t come back.”
“This…could all be a coincidence,” Jane says, lamely.
“Oh yeah. Same way that weird homeless guy you kept hitting with your car showing up inside that storm was all a coincidence,” Darcy says. “Oh, my god. I’ve been watching ANTM highlights with a supervillain.”
I love Darcy Lewis, I think the narrative voice in this one hits her sense of humour just right, and it makes me astoundingly nostalgic for the early 2010s.
2. definitely not bfu rpf (definitely not Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher Unsolved?)
“Even Scully took it seriously when the shadow government gave her cancer, man,” Bryan says, when he sees the glitchy footage.
“There – okay, there are two issues with that line of logic,” Zane says. “First, cancer. That’s detectable by current medical science. It’s not exactly a matter of belief. Second, Dana Scully is a fictional character.”
“So you won’t get an exorcism?” Bryan says, sounding defeated.
“Bryan, my dear, I think you already know the answer to that one.”
Back when the Watcher guys were still attached to Buzzfeed, there was a really popular fandom trope that went around that Shane was secretly a demon. However, nobody seemed to have taken the next logical step - that if Shane was a demon, he wouldn't believe it.
(I don't write RPF, because I tried it and felt weird about it, but I just had to get this written, so I changed everybody's names to something that rhymed with the real-life people's names. Legally Distinct Buzzfeed Unresolved.)
3. Girls In White Dresses (Supernatural)
Mary’s the first to appear in the kitchen doorway, pistol raised, eyes flinty. But she pauses, just for a moment, when she sees Dean, and Jess’ stomach drops. Whoever - whatever - Dean really is, he at least hadn’t lied when he’d said he was Sam’s brother. He’s Mary’s son. And Mary’d just had to watch, helpless, while one of her sons died.
Mary’s going to hesitate. But Jess can already tell that Dean won’t.
By the way Dean's grinning, she can tell he knows it too.
I had to unfridge some of SPN's many, many freezer-burned women. Also it was so much fun to try to think up ways to hurt all of them emotionally as badly as the show likes to hurt its big strong men emotionally. (Lady Gaga voice) It's equality.
4. i hold with those who favour fire (Crimson Peak)
Perhaps she looks too long. Perhaps her eyes are playing tricks on her, perhaps it is only the lingering warmth of the body melting away the fallen snow, but it seems there are more autumn leaves gathered under Edith’s frozen form, more reds and golds spilling from beneath her nightdress and her hands and her golden head. The leaves flicker and dance, as though caught in a high October wind, though any such wind would be stymied by Allerdale’s protective walls.
It isn’t until the hem of Edith’s gown begins to blacken that Lucille sees that what she had taken for autumn leaves are flames.
This one was written for a prompt meme where I asked for a character and a monster/mythical being, and wrote something short connecting the two. I should do that again, that was fun.
5. Boiling a Frog (Rick and Morty)
“It’s strange,” she says, tipping the contents of her cup carefully into the drain under the vending machine’s dispenser and crumpling the cardboard cup in one hand. “None of this feels really...real. Like, Grandpa Rick should be here complaining about how hospitals are breeding grounds for superbugs and how sitting in waiting rooms is pointless because unless you’re a doctor, there’s fuckall you can do to help anyway.”
Morty suddenly looks uneasy, but Summer’s not sure if that’s because of what she said or because of the coffee.
“I’m glad he’s not,” he says, and then looks horrified.
I broke up with this show when it became clear it was going to wallow and spin its own wheels and suck Rick's dick forever and that at least one of its creative minds genuinely seemed to think that was great and smart and good storytelling and if you didn't love it then you were just too stupid to appreciate his brilliance. But every once in a while the show managed to do something really interesting by approaching something heavy and awful sidelong with absurdist sci-fi and gross-out humour in a way that just worked for me.
I tried to do that here and found out just how hard it is to get a handle on that tone of almost manic energy with total black despair oozing out around all the edges. I think it really turned out, here, and despite no longer having any interest in anything to do with the show, I'm proud of it.
Also, I still love Summer.
I'm going to tag @daddygrandpaandthebeaver, @bixxelated, @marzipanandminutiae, @definitely-not-a-bug, @aquitainequeen, and, as usual, anybody who'd like to do it!
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
I ain’t tagging that many people. Q’s are welcome, as always!
inspired by the fact that 8 times out of 10, when I click on a markiplier or spn blog on here, they're also bfu/watcher enjoyers: what fandoms do you think overlap with ours or what have you noticed tends to go together with watcher? i would also say try guys, garrett watts, and gmm for sure.. those are like our sisters. maybe dimension 20?
i would definitely second the first ones you mentioned along w garrett, gmm, and the try guys. i’d add that whole buzzfeed era in general. i’m sure a few more gamers as well as markiplier like that one guy they did the collab w not too long ago i’m forgetting his name. dnd as a whole probably with focus on critical role and dimension 20. i personally don’t watch dimension 20 but i watch other dropout shows like gamechanger which i’ve seen maybe one or two other mutuals post ab so i’m gonna count it lol. i’ve seen a lot of swifties around too myself included. maybe kpop as well. there’s probably a ton more i just don’t recognize bc i’m not familiar with them so if anyone has more to add please do :)
hi not to take away from your experience (i’m poc too and know that some people unfollowing you definitely has to do with discourse) but you did also switch fandom making it a succession blog so maybe some might also be because they’re not interested in your content anymore?
Bruh do y’all think I’m a succession blog??? I have been a multi fandom blog since 2014 and I will continue to keep it that way. I have no plans on ever making this a one fandom account nor has it ever been a one fandom account. There were times when the focus was either marvel, supernatural, broadway, and bfu, but I have always been multifandom.
And in regards to the unfollowing I have been keeping track of a handful who either unfollowed me or i softed them and yeah it’s because of the discourse these past two weeks
Hope this clears it up, but I doubt the majority are unfollowing me because I changed from a severance to a succession username especially since I know not many people watch severance on here. (If they wanted to unfollow me because of a url change they would’ve unfollowed when I got rid of my spn url all those months ago)
It's sad because I think MCYT struggles with rewatchability even when you leave the fandom.
I'm no longer in the Voltron, Phandom, BFU, SPN, and Sherlock fandoms for years now, but I still rewatch stuff from them all the time because I love the shows/content. People get so caught up in the MCYT fandom that they forget the love, and it's sad :(
I don’t think I’ve had this level of brainrot since bfu I know I say supernatural changed my brain chemistry but it has been like 2 days since I finished ofmd and I cannot stop thinking about it also Con O’Neill I have the most respect for now thank you for retweeting tentacle porn of your character this show and your Twitter have made up for the spn pain inflicted on my brain
shane and ryan from bfu could easily survive txf but couldnt survive spn. mulder and scully from txf could probably survive spn but would Die if dropped off at the waverly hills sanatorium. sam and dean could survive bfu but would FREAK at the concept of aliens
