BOOK 30: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin

What a beautiful, gorgeous book. I feel like I’m going to have to reread this at least twice more to fully feel the magnitude of this story. The dualities that she holds in each character and how these drive the plot are really masterful. READ THIS BOOK!!

BOOK 31: Model Home by Rivers Solomon

I don’t think I’ve been as shocked and devastated by a book in a long time. Solomon’s masterful development of Ezri and their familial relationships throughout the book keeps you as the reader guessing. In a way, the whole book felt like I was intruding, seeing something I’m not supposed to, in the same way that I feel like it must feel for other people to observe my own fucked up relationship to my mother. Oh yeah, word of caution if you have mommy issues like I do. This book is full of them. Throughout the book, I found myself trusting Ezri and their perspective, even as things continued not making sense. The strong, pervasive nature of something in the narrative being off, being wrong, being obscured was the most haunting part of the book - despite the titular house being haunted. And then, as the action culminates, Solomon writes a shocking twist, that probably shouldn’t have been a twist if you were looking closer as a reader, but the way they construct the narrative it’s almost impossible to have done that. It left me with a sense of devastation and even more distraught than I had been throughout the rest of the escalating conflict. Truly an amazing book.
