25 books in 2025
Tagged by @bibliophilecats, thank you! Sorry it took me so long, I'm horribly indecisive lol (and @wearethekat I know this isn't exactly what you tagged me in, but here's some books I want to read in 2025!)
Continuing on with my theme from last year, this year I really want to keep my focus on my backlist and tbr, especially those pesky ones that keep slipping away from me despite my best intentions!
The Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin (January)
Machineries of Empire series by Yoon Ha Lee (1/3, April)
Saint of Steel series by T Kingfisher
Penric & Desdemona series by Lois McMaster Bujold (5/13, in progress)
The Doomsday Books series by KJ Charles
Feminine Pursuits series by Olivia Waite (1/3, in progress)
The Listeners by Maggie Stiefvater
The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison (March)
The Orb of Cairado by Katherine Addison
(a book published by Sarah Monette)
The Bone Harp by Victoria Goddard
Bunt! by Ngozi Ukazu and Mad Rupert
Lake of Souls by Ann Leckie
Piranesi by Susanne Clarke
Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind (reread) (February)
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (reread)
Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne (partial reread)
The Island of Dr Moreau by HG Wells (March)
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (reread)
The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery (March)
A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge
The Reckless Kind by Carly Heath
Loveless by Alice Oseman
I loved seeing other people break their lists down, so here we have series, new releases, books I own (to be read in print), books I own on audiobook, classics, young adult.
Every time I look at my goodreads tbr list I could find another dozen to add, but it's already February and I need at least half a chance to finish them all XD

NEW QUEST UNLOCKED: January Writing Month Challenge
ALLLLLLRIGHTY. ITS TIMEEEEEEEEE!
Time for January Writing Month!
Hey, i’m Kani/Kana! (I alternate between those two names) for those who don’t know me.
What most people don’t know about me, except for my lovely moots, is that I usually have a rotating schedule for my consistent writing (for my own sanity). My last writing month was November, and not it’s january! It’s pretty much like this:
January: Writing Quest
February: XP Farming (Inspo gathering/content consumption)
March: Writing Quest
April: XP Farming
May: Writing Quest
June: XP Farming
July: Writing Quest
August: XP Farming
September: Writing Quest
October: XP Farming
November: Writing Quest
December: XP Farming
Of course, you don’t have to stay within these boundaries, and you can write if you want to on the XP months! But on the Writing Quests, you HAVE to remain consistent to achieve a set goal of whatever amount of words you wish to achieve, by the end of the month,
If you want to participate with me of course, i usually do this, bc i have a BOOK TO FINISH!!!! Books plural actually, both reading and writing… And shows I wanna watch and movies i wanna watch but i just don’t feel motivated to watch them… BUT YK THATS WHY I MADE THIS SYSTEM THAT I’M ONY JUST NOW SHARING WITH THE WORLD!!
It’s very simple, and i’m sure other people pretty much came up with the same thing, just different names and stuff, but i guess the unique thing about it here is that you can get constant updates about my progress throughout the entire thing, and you can also like show ur progress thru reblogging or comment or smth i dunno ITS THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS!!!
Bc we’re motivating eachother and stuff
SO YEAH
Writing Quests can also be a lot of things, I know I listed one of them in one of the previous paragraphs but I’ll put a list of things you can do right here if ur not writing a book.
Assign a Word count to finish by the end of the month
Weekly Short Stories (1k-2k), written and edited
Analysis’s of Tales you like, and been wanting to do
Asks and requests for your own blogs
IDK PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING THAT INVOLVES WRITING TBH
A Writing Quest should also be fun by the way! So make it as fun as you can, don’t force yourself to write, write about what you like, or even just journal your thoughts! Just as long as you write and grow from the process!
Mmm that should be it. If ur interested then reblog probably idk
BUT YEAH! GL ON EVERYONE WHO SEES THIS AND IS INTERESTING I TRYING IT!
From a fellow writer,
-Kani

Books I finished reading in January and February 2025
You Will Get Through This Night by Daniel Howell

I have to be honest and say this is not the type of book I usually read and I only read it because it was written by Dan. However, I found that the book was well-written and easily understandable. It didn't read like pop psychology books that I hate so much and it was instead full of actually useful tips to improve your mental health. Additionally, it was funny and it makes the reader feel like they can trust Dan due to him also dealing with mental health problems throughout his life. My one criticism is that I would've liked to see a list of sources at the end. Overall a good book for those dealing with mental health issues.

Living a Jewish Life by Anita Diamant

I read this book for my Intro to Judaism 101 class. It's a good introduction to Jewish life and holidays as it's quite easy to read. This updated version is particularly good as it updates the language used within it to include non-binary and other queer people. It looks at Jewish life through a liberal Jewish lens, so it would not be ideal for those wanting to learn more about Orthodox Judaism, but it is a good resource for those interested in learning more about Conservative or Reform Judaism.

MiqoMarch Day 15: Fortune
Upon our return to Tuliyollal we made our way to where we suspected Kirui might be toiling away. Wachumeqimeqii was abuzz with activity I don't remember seeing when we first arrived. She was easy enough to find, though, as she seemed to be one of only a small number of Au Ra around. When we found her stall down towards the docks she was finalizing an order of raw materials. This was odd since she would usually gather them herself, though the pile of half-finished goods would point to the fact that she simply didn't have the time, and was clearly making more than she did even in Ul'dah. She was delighted to see us, as she so often is, and hurried over to a chest she had kept hidden towards the back. Beaming, she brought it out and opened it for us to see. Within were full new set of armor for each of us, custom made by Kirui herself. She told us she still had a few upgrades in mind, but that these should keep us safe for a while yet. Excited ourselves, we donned them then and there. She loves it when we show off her work, so we struck an impromptu pose for her! When she started rambling on about the materials with that big smile I realized these must have cost a small fortune to make, but I knew she would never accept payment from us. This is how she shows her love, and the best way for her to feel that love back is to wear her creations proudly, which we shall gladly do!
There is one concern, though: where did Statice head off to? I thought she had said she would do a little exploring and head back here, but Kirui said she hadn't been back. I know she can take care of herself just fine, but it does worry me. She doesn't usually stay gone this long, but this is a new place with new people, and I would never want to stifle her curiosity. Besides, she was only so rambunctious due to her boredom back when I first found her, so I doubt she's out there causing trouble. Hopefully we'll reunite soon.
#miqomarch#miqomarch 2025#ryune avereth#m'naago#miqo'te#ffxiv#kirui gesi#i do wanna say before anyone who is allergic to reading comes in and says something about it that I do properly gender the fey#feo ul is they/them as is specified in game#statice is she/her as is also specified in game in the aloalo logs#my hc (as i havent seen it confirmed myself) is that the fey chose how they want to be represented by their pronouns#its only been one person who has said something about it so far because ya'll out there are good at reading and critical thought but also#it bothers me and I'm trying to get ahead of that problem#also i'll fight anyone who purposefully misgenders people in the street

READING LOG No. 9: IRON FLAME (The Empyrean, Book 2) by Rebecca Yarros

Since this is a reread, I won't be writing a full review like normal. I'm just going to ramble about it. I liked this book when I first read it in 2023, but I love it now. Upon re-visit, I truly believe that this book elevated the first one and this one with a single detail: Xaden's second signet.
There is so much nuance now with every Xaden interaction. In Fourth Wing, you can see where he uses his signet on Violet, like when she's hiding in the tree and also when she's brooding the night before gauntlet. There are three moments in Iron Flame that are my favorite hints to his inntinnsic ability: first, when Varrish is trying to take Violet for their first interrogation test for RSC and Xaden is mentally telling Violet that Varrish plans to use that as a way to kill her; second, when he insists on meeting Jesinia and Violet's like, "so you can do your reading of her to test her trustworthiness," not knowing that is exactly why; and thirdly, when Xaden yells for Violet right before Aaric grabs at her and pulls her through the barrier in the archives. I figured he must have been using his second signet the whole time to monitor Aaric to ensure his compliance and dependability.
The way that Liam haunts the narrative as an emotional crutch was for both Violet and me. I love that he is still present, even if it was as a delusion. It is actually insane how deeply attached I, and many others, are to him from just one book. I cried again over his death during my reread of Fourth Wing. I hope he continues to haunt the narrative in the next three books.
With the wording used for the excerpts before each chapter, and keeping mind the fact that both books start with a disclaimer that the following story is a translation by Jesinia, I have a prediction for the way this series will end. I think our main cast of dragon riders are all going to die, including Violet and Xaden. I feel like the letters Xaden wrote to Violet wouldn't be listed as "recovered" if one of them had voluntarily handed them over to Jesinia so that she could add it to her records. I also think they were too personal and meaningful for either of them to hand them over. I, also, think that the tradition of burning possessions immediately after a death is going to be stopped for the exact reason of maintaining accurate archiving of information. So much of these books are about government censorship and rewritten history for propaganda and societal control.
I've read a lot of criticism about the pacing of the book, which I don't understand. I loved the pacing. I loved that it's split into two parts, because, at 600+ pages, Yarros could have easily split this into 2 books and that would've been annoying to me.
