Almost forgot to post today 🙈🙈 I thoroughly enjoyed Salt to the Sea because of Ruta Sepetys writing, so I cant wait to jump into this!!! 🖤💙🖤💙 I've been in some pain the last few days. Turns out my muscles are so tense that they've pulled on my neck bones and made them straight. Fun fact, your neck has a natural curve in it haha oh goodness. I am a walking mess haha 💙🖤💙🖤 #bookstagram #bookdragon #bibliophile #bookstagrammer #amreading #ilovebooks #kimmersbooks #betweenshadesofgray #rutasepetys #bookreader #booksofinstagram #bookaddict https://www.instagram.com/p/BsW0U7KHmVK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=132ry09j7bz4w

Between Shades of Gray/Ashes in the Snow Review
5/5 stars Recommended for people who like: historic fiction, WWII history, Soviet history, Lithuanian history, strong female characters, survival stories It is probably obvious by now, but I really enjoy WWII historic fiction. Some people aren't as into it as I am, which is understandable, and that's one of the beauties of this book. It is set during WWII, but it doesn't read like your typical WWII fiction novel. Sepetys focuses on the Soviet aspect of WWII in Between Shades/Ashes, and in particular, the Soviet occupation and deportation of the Baltic States. It's definitely not something you learn about in American schools, so I was thrilled to get this introduction to a part of history that's 1) little known, and 2) is not so old that you can't still find primary sources on it. For starters, this book is beautiful quote porn. There are so many of them scattered throughout the book, but here are a couple from the first five chapters alone: "They took me in my nightgown." (3), "We were about to become cigarettes." (5), "The child had been alive only minutes but was already considered a criminal by the Soviets." (21), and "Have you ever wondered what a human life is worth? That morning, my brother's was worth a pocket watch." (27). On top of these, and many more, beautiful lines throughout the novel, Sepetys manages to perfectly paint a picture of the balance between humanity's ugliness and cruelty and its hope and resilience. I especially love how Sepetys showed this breadth in single characters sometimes. There are characters you love to hate, whom you cheer on, whom you just want to be given a goddamn rest. Our narrator, Lina, is fifteen when she and her family are deported. She is afraid, but she also has a tenacity and bravery that has her trying to protect her brother, find her father, and snark some of the other prisoners they're with. As we follow her through the story, I could really feel what she was going through and the kernels of hatred she developed for the NKVD. I understood her reticence when it came to learning Russian, I understood why she would want to hit and spit at them--I even wanted her to, in some parts--but I also saw her fear and hope and her desire to be more than what the NKVD were pushing her into. With these thoughts in mind, there's a part toward the end with Lina that is especially poignant. Jonas, her little brother, is 10, I believe, when they're deported. I really feel like he ages more than Lina does over the story. There are times when he feels like the older child, just because he comes across as a lot less angry than Lina does throughout the story. There are definitely times when he was angry at the situation, at the people around them, but overall he's a gentler, more adaptable soul than Lina. He goes through so much at such a young age, and yet he still cares for the people around him and maintains a lot of his pre-deportation attributes--not saying Lina doesn't, just that I think it's admirable he does the same at a much younger age. (And while this is a review of the book, it is CRIMINAL he wasn't in the movie more) Andrius is another character who was criminally underused in the movie who is just absolutely amazing in the book. Andrius' mom does some...compromising things in order to keep the two of them alive, and I think it really shows in the way he carries himself and the things he does. He definitely takes on the roll of friend and caretaker to Jonas, though his relationship with Lina is a lot more convoluted. They are comrades, they are angry at one another, they are friends, they are angry; their relationship goes back and forth until it settles into something deeper. His relationship with his mom, with Jonas, with the NKVD, with Lina, all work to characterize him as a character who--while originally has seeming contradictions--is actually a well-rounded, resilient character. *SPOILER* I really wish Sepetys would write a book about what happened with him between when Lina is taken to Siberia and when they reunite. *SPOILER OVER* The other prisoners were all really interesting to read. While all from the same general area, each had a diverse background and personality that Sepetys really brought forward, making them seem like real people. Lina and Jonas' mother, for instance, is always helping others and being respectful to the soldiers despite their cruelty, whereas the bald man (I think that's Mr. Stalas) is extremely pessimistic and rude and keeps mentioning his desire to die and how it'd be easier if everyone killed themselves. The other deportees fall somewhere between the mother and the bald man on the spectrum of how they handle things. On the flip side, Sepetys also shows the interactions with the NKVD in several different lights. As a whole, they're terrible people who commit horrible atrocities, but the Commander has a family and wants his portrait sketched, and Kretzsky pulls through for the deportees in certain aspects. She isn't condoning their actions, but she is showing multiple sides to them, which I enjoyed since it doesn't happen a lot in this kind of fiction, and I think without it it's very easy to forget that the people who committed atrocities during WWII came from all walks of life, they were single and they were married and they had kids or little siblings, they were everyday people before and after they went to work, and it isso easy to forget that most of these people did not necessarily show symptoms of evil in order to do evil.

I had an exam today, a final. There was history involved, which I loathe. But since it was a final, I never have to study it ever again. And to commemorate the joyous occasion, here's the only kind of history I can, to some extent, deal with. A story helps distract me from the historical setting. I've only read two of these books, top and bottom, and I loved them. They made me wish I liked history more. #bookstagram #bookish #betweenshadesofgray #allthelightwecannotsee #thebookthief #anthonydoerr #rutasepetys #markuszusak #readersofinstagram #instabooks

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys is a heart-wrenching, emotional novel. “Lina, her mother and brother are taken from their home in Lithuania by Soviet officers and forced onto a crowded train. They are sent to a Siberian work camp and forced to fight for their lives.” This book looks at part of Stalin’s purge of the Baltic countries during WW ll. How can men be so evil? How do people find the will to live and persevere? Book is beautifully written, but the subject matter is tough. But Sepetys wants you to know this story. #betweenshadesofgray #rutasepetys #historicalfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookshelf #books #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #booklover #bookish #bookreview #bookclub #novel #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookcover #bookhaul #bibliophile #goodreads #homelibrary #bradslibrary #ya
