Character Spotlight Monday turns its focus to Veronica Lodge!

Of the big 5 Riverdale cast, Veronica has arguably interacted the least with Sabrina. Brina's dated Archie and Jughead, tried to help Betty and pranked Reggie, but she and Veronica don't really meet much, and probably wouldn't vibe, as Veronica (like Cheryl) would probably be her rival.

Still, they have interacted a few times! Usually negatively, as seen by the panels above! Veronica also turned out to be a witch in "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", met her in Vampironica form in both "Jughead The Hunger VS Vampironica" and "Bite Sized Archie", met her in live action in Riverdale, in cartoon form in the 60's, and these days the the two hang out anytime Archie Comics feel like a one shot!

can i be riverpilled on main for a sec. if jughead has been controlling the narrative all along - which tbf we were told in the first five minutes of the show - then it makes sense that both betty and veronica are not representative of themselves, actually, but rather of himself. if we are to believe the story of riverdale, then two things are true: 1. that jughead has been in love with archie this whole time and 2. that jughead himself never wanted to be part of the narrative. think about it - each season, apart from 1 and 3, involve some kind of death/death threat for jughead (serpent battle, stonewall preps, rat…king? dead and sent to heaven for sabrina to retrieve him, literally booted out of the narrative). however, someone is still required for him to project his feelings onto. if you believe that riverdale is a story starting with the real events of jason’s murder, jughead takes on the role of investigator/narrator. this means he needs someone else to be the love interest: enter betty. someone he would’ve known since forever, and so all of sudden, as jugheads story starts, betty “réalisés” she wants to tell archie she likes him -> jughead’s own crush coming to light / vs. veronica coming to town and immediately catching archie’s eye (AND she resembles him, dark hair, dark clothing, pretentiousness galore) -> jughead wanting archie to want HIM. all of this explains why betty and archie never really click in s5, why betty repeatedly takes the chance to kiss archie despite her friendship with veronica being at stake (what jughead would do, if he could) why veronica cannot handle loneliness, why a lot of the time neither betty or veronica’s actions match up to the personalities that they actually have -> betty is repeatedly made out to be a “hero” struggling against her internal demons/serial killer genes despite everything that would condemn her as a bad person/friend whereas veronica tries to be better and still falls short at every turn -> representation of repressed homophobia re: how not confessing makes him feel better about himself, like he’s doing archie a favor vs. even thinking that he would LIKE to date archie makes him “feel evil”. in the end, betty and veronica don’t even actually care about archie, romantically; the one person betty misses more than anyone in the last episode is veronica (her long lost love) and veronica throughout the series spends more time trying to figure out what would actually make her happy even though she has archie and that should supposedly be the answer; this is their actual characters breaking through the shell of projection given to them by narrator!jughead. of course, this would’ve been solidified if cole sprouse wasn’t a coward and kissed kj apa on screen in the finale but you know what they say about the absence of a thing .

ok so basically it starts with old betty being like 80 and all the other riverdale characters are dead. and then jughead shows up as an angel and takes her back to a high school day and its revealed that she was in a quad relationship with veronica, archie, and jughead. but then all the characters move away from riverdale and die in different ways. then old betty dies and reunites with her friends in riverdale heaven (its not really heaven its like this diner but removed from reality) and narrator jughead is like 'theyre all going to be 17 forever here btw' and then it ends

“Does he always do that?” Betty asked as her and Veronica watched out y/n’s bedroom window. They were currently having a sleepover but Archie and some of the Bulldogs were playing football out in the street.

“Yup.” Y/n let out a frustrated sigh as she pulled her hair up into a ponytail.

“Wow, Archie Andrews being a show off.” Veronica said amused as she to watched the redheaded boy.

“He never stops.” Y/n stated shaking her head as she glanced out the window for a second.

“Do you know why?” Betty questioned moving to sit across from y/n on the bed.

“I think he likes me, but if he knew anything about me. He wouldn’t.” She told them shaking her head. It had been going on for months at this point.

“Why do you say that?” Veronica tilted her head at Y/n’s statement. Confused about what she meant by it.

“I’m a Serpent Veronica. Archie hates the Serpents. And besides, I’m dating Sweet Pea.” Y/n shrugged and gave them a tight lipped smile, but it became real at the mention of Sweet Pea.

“I will say I love Archie and he’s a good guy but, Sweet Pea treats you like a princess.” Betty smiled at Y/n. Betty had known Archie forever but she had firsthand witnessed how Sweet Pea treats her friend in their relationship. And even Betty didn’t think Archie could treat her that good.

“Correction. He treats you like a Queen.” Veronica smiled coming around to sit on the bed with the both of them.

Y/n smiled widely at their comments. “Plus with all the beef going on between the bulldogs and the Serpents. It’d be worse once he knew FP treats me like a daughter.”

“FP treats you better than my father treats me.” Veronica admitted letting out a sigh that had frustration and sadness in it.

“Sorry V.” Betty rubbed her friend's upper arm.

“No worries. Hey, do you think FP could honorarly adopt me too?” Veronica asked y/n jokingly.

“I mean if you ask.” Y/n shrugged her shoulders but they all started laughing, not being able to hold it anymore.

It was only a week later at a game for the school that the girls along with y/n and Toni noticed Archie doing it again. Watching.

“He’s doing it again.” Veronica noted nudging the y/h/c-ed girl scooted next to her on the bleachers.

“This is just sad to watch.” Betty said watching the boy she grew up with, with squinted eyes. 

“Sweet Pea’s going to be here soon. And for the record this is fun to watch.” Toni interjected as she sat down next to them. She found Archies actions to be quite entertaining much like Veronica but for different reasons.

“Once he sees the back of my jacket he’ll stop.” Y/n nodded, taking a hand full of popcorn from Toni. Y/n made sure to wear her Serpents jacket tonight. This needed to stop.

“Hey, babe.” Sweet Pea greeted kissing her on the cheek. Toni scooted over fromY/n so Sweet Pea could sit down next to her.

“Hey.” Y/n greeted Sweet Pea before he could sit down she stood to hug him, making sure her jacket faced the field as she did so.

“And he noticed.” Betty pointed out as the couple sat down.

“Wow.” Veronica shook her head with wide eyes. “Men.” she scoffed, as they all watched the attraction Archie had to Y/n leave him as he saw her jacket.

“What are they talking about?” Sweet Pea asked leaning in to whisper in Y/n’s ear.

“Nothing.” Y/n answered but she could tell he didn’t believe it. So Y/n turned a tiny bit to face him with her body, grabbing his hand bringing it to her lips. “Trust me Pea. If it was something worth telling, I’d tell you.”

“She would.” Betty stated in agreement.

Toni knew problems would only get worse if Sweet Pea knew exactly what they were talking about. “You or FP would be the first to know.”

And it was true but let's just hope Archie had the sense to not ever bring it up.

First impression: I love that initial montage with Jason and the decision to open the show with such heavy * implications, but really that shot of her on the rocks by sweetwater river crying mascara tears won me over so fucking hard, I was locked in

Impression now: 😍😍😍😍😍😍

Favorite moment: god, where to begin... setting her house on fire... talking to her brother's corpse, mourning cheerleader outfits... as a s5/s6 hardcore stan when she thinks she's the first living saint and has magical powers and then when she does get powers, and ofc this episode one of the greatest slayages of all time // also she has never won a dance-off (she can't dance)

Idea for a story: I'd like to see a Cheryl that wasn't tied down to hugely popular canon gay ship forever across all universes including after death monogamy... I don't even really dislike the ship in question per se but she had too much chemistry with everyone else to be tied down

Unpopular opinion: above is the most unpopular opinion possible... why does she have a child

Favorite relationship: Veronica for fucking, Betty in general

Favorite headcanon: not sure if I have one because I don't think her feelings for Jason are a headcanon I think that's canon. but I think it's funny if she actually did a little magic her entire life

First impression: funny actually because I didn't know who anyone was, s1 was just about to finish when I started and my friends on twitter were all starting to watch, and I'd seen Kendall mentioned a bunch by them because we all went on to become kendolls but I didn't know what he looked like, so my FIRST first impression was cringing at his rapping, and then when he gets out of the car it was me going "oh I think this is Kendall!!"

Favorite moment: I was just talking about first impressions so I'll say Austerlitz kitchen scene, the first time we see him high around his family, and because s1 never gets any love in this fandom the I Wanna Dance with Somebody scene from that finale

Idea for a story: this is funny because I have been technically writing a story for several months though it's from another character's pov and will probably never see the light of day... but it's set in the past and it's a lot about expectations and having your future written up for you and things about little fictional heirs that interest me. I don't really have post-canon story ideas because I'm not really that interested in what happens there but Kendall as Shiv is in the hospital giving birth behaving like Dennis in the iasip episode where Dee gives birth is always a very funny image I'd read that fic

Unpopular opinion: Kendall did not in fact Become Logan in the final season of HBO's Succession. (also people misinterpret the now infamous "the poison drips through" line but that's not so much tied to his character)

Favorite relationship: Shiv 1000000000%

Favorite headcanon: people used to have a problem with this headcanon for some reason I don't remember but he's 100% bipolar. I think the objection was that it wasn't bipolar it was substance abuse which is extremely silly. That gleam in his eye is a manic episode babes!!!!

More Heathers (Movie) Headcanons!

Heather Chandler's love language are acts of services and words of affirmation.

Heather McNamara's love language are words of affirmation and quality time.

Heather Duke's love language are acts of service and quality time (with a sprinkle of gift giving because she's materialistic).

Veronica Sawyer's love language are words of affirmation and quality time.

Heather Duke is an ambivert but leans more onto her introverted side.

Heather McNamara is no doubt an extrovert.

Chandler used to be a very sporty kid.

Veronica hated books when she was a child.

How did she come to like them now? Well, Betty happened and she was influenced by her.

Duke used to hang out with Martha at her house a lot when they were still kids and were still good friends with each other.

Betty and Veronica were close to each other since childhood but when they got into high school, they grew apart from one another.

Mac knows that Chandler is a bad person but she doesn't care because while she might be the living embodiment of cruel, she was a good friend to her.

Duke was raised in a family that cared a lot about their image, it extended from one generation to another.

Duke and Mac both have the fear of abandonment but Duke has it a bit more severe because of how Chandler can just easily throw her away like an unwanted broken toy.

Veronica never really participated that much with the Heathers when they bullied people.

The only things she would do when she was participating were throwing a snarky comment here and there while hitting on the person's insecurity at it.

Veronica was usually just backup in case a person were too much of a handle for the Heathers.

Chandler DOES genuinely enjoy Veronica's company a lot.

She'll never tell that to anyone, of course. It's not a good thing to be known when you're her after all.

Mac is very naive and it makes her a very easy target to be controlled hence why Chandler has her so wrapped around her fingers.

While they all have an image to maintain and relationships that are mostly built for selfish (insincere) reasons.

They did somehow form genuine things out of it and as time passed, the lines between being actual genuine friend's and feeling like business partners to each other started to blur or mix.

Duke DID feel guilty about leaving Martha and becoming part of the Heathers but it disappeared slowly as she focused on other things than feeling guilty about it.

Mac wasn't fully aware she was bullying people back then until someone she bullied had enough of it and decided to point it out.

Mac was really conflicted with it but Chandler convinced her that the little “jokes” she would often make out of people they considered as losers were harmless.

That's when Mac started to become morally ambiguous apart from knowing Chandler is a bad person but still remaining by her side because she's a good friend to her.

Chandler is nicer to Mac than Duke because Mac has been her friend since forever and because unlike Duke, Mac didn't need that much pushing or persuading.

Chandler doesn't really know how to feel about Veronica, she wants her around and enjoy her company more than maybe Duke & Mac but she wouldn't hesitate to push Veronica into a lake for a mean prank or to remind the brunette of her place.

Veronica DOES care about the Heathers but it's a constant on and off thing she has with them.

Duke was hesitant and very reluctant to join the Heathers, it took Chandler a few weeks to finally make her change her own mind about it.

Duke has a little bit of a god complex along with Veronica.

JD did care when he made Veronica accidentally kill Chandler but after the blonde died, he had never felt so alive.

It was so refreshing to feel like that after feeling so numb and dead for years now.

JD has a god complex.

He also sorta has a martyr complex?

He couldn't imagine himself with anyone than Veronica.

Veronica meant a lot to JD but at the same time, she could have mattered less when it came to his goals.

top 3 Archie traumas. actually...do the whole core four

i love this. what does this mean. my favourite traumas?? the most impactful ones on the characters and their stories?? the ones that just live rent free in my mind?? im just gonna go with. yes. all of the above.

Archie:

Hiram Lodge. I couldn't decide between getting framed for murder, or the attempts on his life in juvie, or Hiram nearly beating him to death in the ring, or the three hundred other things Hiram does to him. So Hiram gets his own bullet.

War. Because I love the football war scene. Also because I love the choice to have Archie fight in what is aesthetically clearly the trenches of WWI except its in Uzbekistan in 2020.

Bear. It is so important to me that Archie goes to Canada and gets mauled by a bear. This could technically fall under the Hiram bullet but it's so special to me that it gets its own.

Veronica:

Can I just say Hiram Lodge again? Yeah I think I'm just gonna say Hiram Lodge again.

Marrying a guy exactly like Hiram Lodge. And then killing him.

Also Killing Hiram Lodge. And then her blood turning to poison about it and killing some guy she was trying to hook up with. Haven't we all been there. I realize this is basically just Hiram Lodge three times but please consider: Hiram is Hiram forever. Especially if you're his daughter.

Jughead:

Being abandoned and neglected by his parents and experiencing homelessness as a teen.

Rat King. Getting lost in the NYC sewers and becoming the rat king and getting rabies. Happened to my guy Jughead.

S4 attempted murder because I'm forever a s4 defender and without it we don't have the iconic "I GUESS DEATH JUST CHANGES A PERSON" line leading into exquisite corpse

Betty:

The attempted lobotomy. Betty's only remaining non-serial killer family trying to indoctrinate her into an organ-stealing cult and then her best friend dragging her by her ankles to get a lobotomy. Season three is so special to me.

TBK holding her captive and making her carve up a body with him. I don't care that the trash bag killer is the world's silliest serial killer name I love everything that comes out of this plot. I love you silence of the lambs references, I love you betty cooper doing violence, I love you autoshop interrogation scene.

Hal Cooper. If I'm giving Hiram is own slot in two of these Hal has to get one, too. Also he could have easily gone under Archie too for y'know, shooting his dad in front of him. Why is Hal number three instead of number one despite his massive impact on Betty and her development? He has number three vibes. Way easier to get rid of. Can't do anything right, even be a serial killer.

It’s been one year since we said goodbye to Riverdale. Since our characters got their happy endings.

- Since Archie settled down with a woman in Modesto, had a family, and continued writing and working construction.

- Since Jughead never married or had kids, but went on to become a prolific editor and created his own comics magazine called “Jughead’s Madhouse Magazine”.

- Since Betty moved to NYC to become a freelance writer, created a feminist magazine called “She Says”, and adopted a daughter named Carla.

- Since Veronica moved to LA & became a major movie studio executive, won two oscars and produced some of the most iconic films of her time.

- Since Reggie went on to play basketball for the Lakers, before moving back to Riverdale, taught basketball at Riverdale High, and had a wife and two sons.

- Since Cheryl & Toni settled into Oakland Hills in their craftsman house, living together as artists and social justice activists, with their son Dale.

- Since Kevin & Clay moved to NYC together, where Kevin started an off-broadway theatre company and Clay became a professor at Columbia.

Whether your ship ended up together or not, whether you enjoyed the final season or not, you have to appreciate that everyone was happy, successful. And that this final scene means they live on forever, tell countless stories and live everyday like it’s an Archie Comic. Everyone together in the Sweet Hereafter, for the rest of eternity.

There will never be another show like it, and I’m so grateful to have witnessed these beautiful characters’ journeys. Thank you, Riverdale. 💙🤍

They will forever be loved. The quad was simply an experiment between good friends who genuinely cared for another. Jughead and Veronica were true romantic soulmates, just like Archie and Betty were. I truly believe Jeronica kept in touch over the years by always calling one another for advice, and then eventually reuniting again living out their fullest beautiful lives together.

I'm so grateful they were finally given a chance, I only wish we had more time with them 💚💜
