Since I was too heavily invested in potato-ing to do this last week, this is technically two weeks worth. 🥔🥔

Watching: is actually REwatching M*A*S*H yet again. -ish?

As in letting it run on the tv in the background a lot. I'm already at Charles! He's such a better foil than Frank ever managed. (Glorious bastard vs snivelling ninny, the glorious bastard always wins.) I did stop and watch Mulcahy's War properly tho, since that's always been one of my favorite episodes. It is also where bb!jilly first learned the word 'tracheotomy' and bb!jilly wanted to be a pathologist when she grew up, so that's a pretty formative influence. Or something?

Adulting: Still enjoying my job, and they don't seem to want to get rid of me, either. 😄 Not so great with non-job to-do list, but whatever. Adulting is hard, no one's dying/starving/injured/fired, so we'll take it.

I finished my first "race" of the year! I don't have my medal yet though, you'll have to wait on that. I'm only averaging about a mile and a half a day which means I'm gonna need to be *over* three miles/day for the rest of the year, but I did the same thing last year, I just suck at January/February so it's not actually that discouraging. (I also lost a bunch of steps because I wasn't wearing my watch while I was shoveling out the driveway when we finally got snow last week, but whatever. 🤣)

Reading: Mermaids & Murder & Toad, oh my!

I liked Into the Drowning Deep more than Rolling in the Deep, but I'm glad I finally tracked down a copy so I could read it, it is very good. If tragic. But I knew that going in.

Adèle from Jane Eyre is an excellent heroine of her own, and for all I do actually adore the original, this is visceral & self-aware in a way I think Bronte would have appreciated, even as it does emphasize different conclusions.

Hey look I've had T. Kingfisher in *every one* of these so far, so are we surprised? No. Is Thornhedge spectacular & somehow adorable even around all the terrible fae violence? Yes. (I should let my mother know I'd like the hardcover for my birthday, since it was a library read. 🎁)

Playing: Cult of the Lamb, to poke around the new Sins of the Flesh update. It's a very silly game, but again, I knew that already 😅😅😅 (Thing 1 got it for me, I'm glad he knows I've put an embarrassing number of hours into it.)

Creating: No writing or podfics or fanmixing, despite the occasional intention for all of the above. However!

Oh thanks so much for the ask. This is a Christmas story, so maybe I'll have it done in time for December?

Here's a description: "Shadows of Love"-- In 1831 London, Henry Poldark, now grown and living from home, develops a tenderness for his young parlour maid.

Here's a snippet:

“Allow me, Betsy.” Henry took the heavy coal bucket from the young maid as she struggled through the chamber door. She looked paler, thinner even from the last time he’d see her.

“Oh, thank you, but no sir, Mister Poldark, sir,” she stammered, reaching out to take the bucket back but unsure of what to do next. 

“Am I not your friend? Therefore you must indulge me,” he winked. He hadn’t meant to be charming, just friendly, and had no idea how confusing his gestures were to the girl.

“Yes of course, sir, but I mean, what if Mrs. Thomas--or your mama were to see?” she gasped.

“Well, I am Mrs. Thomas’s guest and she has an obligation to fulfil my wishes, as long as they are reasonable. And Mama? She’d no doubt scold me for not having made the fire myself before you rose and then she’d put you to bed with some hot milk,” he laughed. “Besides, she and papa are unlikely to rise until later.  It is their custom when they are from home. Come, do sit down a moment, my dear.”

“Oh, I see.” She carefully perched herself on the edge of the hardest chair in the room, ready to leap up in a flash. “They do seem such kind people, Lady Demelza and Sir Ross. And fine ones, of course.” She dared to look up at him; a weak smile barely disguised her fear that she’d overstepped a boundary.

Henry gave a warm chuckle--it was deep like his father’s, as he was oft reminded--pleased that his own chatter had succeeded in inviting the young thing to speak.

“That they do aim to be. Kind that is. And they do also manage to be fine--and honourable, I suppose. And your people? How do they fare?” he asked.

“Oh, sir, they are well, I suppose. Only cousin Ann can write and she do send me letters from time to time. I had one just last month with Christmas tidings.”

“A bit early?”

“Oh but she writes when she has time, mind. She’s in service at Fernhill Park,” she said proudly.

“In Buckinghamshire?” he asked, wondering if it was too early to light his pipe. He decided against it when she gave a light cough.

“Yes, sir. And I’m always glad to hear from her, no matter the reason--Ann is like a sister to me, you see.”

“Have you other siblings?” he asked, thinking of his own sisters back home in Cornwall.  No doubt they’d be bustling with their own preparations of the season. Mama would insist they all gather at Nampara and even though Clowance’s home in Wiltshire was far grander, no one would dare to argue. Christmas at Nampara was always a cheerful affair. He’d be sorry to miss it, but at least he’d have had a warm visit from Mama--and Papa.

“No sir. Twasn’t blessed with any. My own mother died when I was a baby--in childbirth they say. That’s when dear Aunt Mary took me in and raised me alongside her own--Ann, Fanny, and Mary Martha. So you see I’ve had other blessings.”

“And your father?” As soon as he’d asked he sensed it might be an indelicate subject  to broach.

“Erm, I never knew my father, sir. And I don’t carry his name--I’m his natural daughter, you see,” she said with a blush.

Henry shook his head, as if to dislodge a darker thought. 

It didn't seem fair to him that this sweet girl should feel shame at her situation, one not of her own making, when amongst his genteel neighbours, such shame wasn’t so acutely worn. Both here and in Cornwall, he’d encountered many of his class, all with complicated family ties, the shadows of love and impulse that had been left behind. Sometimes these misborn were shuffled about as “wards” or sent away to schools, fine establishments where they might have been lonely but at least were raised well and still granted prospects. Of course they always had someone's name--no matter how dubiously it had been acquired. 

And just what was in a name? Henry’s own father had bestowed upon him not only an ancient name but a title as well, one he too would be expected to pass on someday. His mother, Lady Demelza, had had another name before she traded up for a better one, and never spoke of her early life. She’d raised Henry in all manner of folklore and stories but always about other families. Never about the Carnes, and never her own parents--her own mother had died when she was quite young. Perhaps she felt those stories no longer belonged to her.

“Never lived until I came to Nampara,” she’d said more than once, as though she’d invented love and invented herself upon arriving there.

Everything Henry knew of the Carne family he'd taught himself from Aunt Rosina’s bible. It was only lists of names, births and deaths. Nothing about the flesh and bones, the hurts and dreams. And yet it was more than this girl knew of her people, he supposed.

“What were your biggest inspirations (artists, books, etc) while writing your newest album? How long did it take you to write the whole thing?”

Dear Erica,

This has been a very nice experience to look back and pick up the things you forgot actually, so thanks for that.

At the time it was just leaving spring and the weather was a breezy 19 degrees. I remember reading a lot as we had lazy mornings and good breaks so we could work in more of a concentrated environment at Ethan’s.

I remember before we started recording, he played me a few albums; the first being Elliott Smith’s Roman Candle (naturally), Simon and Garfunkel’s Bookends, and Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk.

All three, we agreed, were albums of classic recording technique juxtaposed with these mental, wrong or messy sounding idiosyncrasies that work unashamedly. The horrible chords and grinding electric on Roman Candle, the outrageous circus orchestra of Old Friends, the general synth push and drifting instrumental of The Rainbow - we wanted to do that or some digression of it with Seahorses. It was more of a mutual feeling we both got when we listened, this push of angst or aggression, something that tears you but you like it, they were the few references we subconsciously chose.

Writing was a different story, because it was so long and sporadic. The songs were picked up and put down, forgotten and neglected, but all very quickly done in terms of actual sit-down-and-write time. The recording process took 10 days initially, with 3 at Rockfield to put on some extra drums and synths and to get into the echo chambers, then maybe a couple more days to mix. All songs where done in 2 or 3 takes from live to 4-track, and we just built up sounds from there.

Songs like Betsy and Mice were all written maybe two years ago, I took myself off to Cornwall and came back with Mice but didn’t think it was any good at all. I later went in with my producer Rich where we recorded that song in one day and wrote Betsy the next, it felt immediately like a new wave of recording, and the start of the next album’s groove. We love it.

Listening to the voice notes now I actually recorded ‘it doesn’t really matter if I’m happy or sad’ when I was walking back from the beach one night, which later turned into the start of Cartoon People. Pieces like that always find a way in somewhere I guess.

Blue Sea, Red Sea was written when I just moved into my place in London, a really discombobulating time. I got a randomised and probably not healthy or conducive to writing job, I walked around a lot, got upset with the weather and all the snow, got angry. I sat down to write and reduced everything to the simplest melody and chord progression I could and thought “Fuck it, I’ll just make a pop album instead”. In reality it’s just a song of homesickness and convincing yourself to be a good human without others, “I don’t need you to love me” gets a bit defensive but it’s not directed at one human.

Books –

I read Joan Didion a lot, Deborah Levy’s, Things I Don’t Want To Know, Iris Murdoch’s The Italian Girl, and Nietzsche's Aphorisms on Love and Hate and I liked these pages – 

They don’t say much but they say a lot.

I wouldn’t say I have clear inspiration for making songs or albums, they are more of an accumulation of a general feeling that keeps repeating itself, in all parts of life, and you find that eventually presents itself in the music. I do like to read a lot during recording though, it completely takes you out of the room you’re in and it’s not as easy or satisfying as watching the TV. Reading switches you off by turning you onto something that takes time to understand, be it a storyline or a metaphorical image or some philosophy you’ve never heard before, it’s a short challenge for however many days it takes you to read it and at the end an accomplishment. That is why people buy more and are never satisfied with just the one. Your brain likes it.

Some songs were written earlier and the books were different too, more politically charged like Animal Farm (a narrative that made me write Blood Is Blue), and Heart of Darkness I read in the Philippines which lead me to write Anda.

Here are Ethan’s notes after our final session at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth – the greatest place in Monmouthshire. One day we got tired and grumpy so took a drive into town to get fish and chips and walk around, our engineer Dom bought a Little Feet record from the market man.

I went for a walk one morning and got chased by a herd of cows, but in the next field a bunch of nice people were putting up their hot air balloon out the back of a defender.

Titles/Author: Summer Prince/ Alaya Dawn Johnson Genre: YA, romance, dystopian Relationship(s): m/m/f, m/m The Good: lively and fast moving plot, interesting world building, good characters and motivations, character development, writing style is easy and pleasant to read The Bad: unnecessary sex scenes, tension falls flat, okay ending, world building holes Extra Notes: unlike coda I feel this one is enjoyable regardless of whether you like the genre or not but I’d be hesitant to recommend to readers under 16 due to inappropriateness. also, it is based on brazilian culture (I believe), which could be problematic, but I don’t know enough about it to know myself. Titles/Author: Fingersmith/ Sarah Waters Genre: historical fiction, crime, psychological thriller Relationship(s): f/f The Good: fairly true to the setting and time period, characters are very realistic and a bit gritty, plot and narrative have a unique twist, ending was satisfactory The Bad: big drag in the beginning of part two where it basically is a re-telling of the end of part one, gruesome and graphic in places, hard to get into at the beginning even though the set-up is extremely important to the plot, language is a bit difficult until you get the hang of it Extra Notes: I watched the movie The Handmaiden first, so I had a good idea what was coming at me. Fortunately, it is not as gruesome and disturbing as the movie is, but unfortunately it is still full of potential triggers and uncomfortable topics. It is also an extremely long book (600 pages). Sex scenes, allusions of rape, mentions of torture, etc. I enjoyed it and rammed through it in two days but I just can’t imagine the general populace wants to read this book without an interest in the dark and macabre. Personal Rating: 8/10 Recommend: No

Titles/Author: Iron & Velvet/ Alexis Hall Genre: paranormal, detective Relationship(s): f/f, background m/m The Good: fits genre expectations, quick read, lots of action and excitement The Bad: it is a little over the top with some of the supernatural stuff, side characters aren’t that great Extra Notes: This book was gaudy as all get out but a ton of fun and lots of witty lines. I don’t really think it is the kind anyone will re-read but it is a fun book for entertainment value alone. Sex scenes, lots of casual mentions of sex and wanting to have sex. It reminded me of fanfiction circa 2010. Personal Rating: 7.5/10 Recommend: No, unless you like the genre or fanfiction circa 2010

It’s really rare to find a young adult written for younger teens and this was written perfectly to suit the age group. It is super cute and very positive without washing things over with rainbows and sunshine. Titles/Author: River of Teeth/ Sarah Gailey Genre: alternative history; bio sci fi Relationship(s): hard to qualify but there is a gender fluid, gender binary and 2 bi characters along with bi x nb relationship vibes The Good: Interesting premise, fast paced, distinctive characters, lots of tension, subtle but not non-existent romance The Bad: It’s a novella, so it’s short. Some of the action at the end, while well-written, was still confusing to visualize mentally. A few editorial bloopers. The characters aren’t as fleshed out as I’d like but it is a novella, so yeah, expected. Extra Notes: I read this while waiting for my stupid computer to update. It is a novella not a novel, so it is short. But it is extremely well paced and the balance between action and dialogue is well done. There is death and there is knife play and people having unfortunately accidents with hippos. There is a sequel, which was also good, but for completely different reasons (much heavier on the romance). Personal Rating: 9/10 Recommend: Yes, unless you are afraid of hippos

Titles/Author: A Place to Rest/ Erin Dutton Genre: romance Relationship(s): f/f, background m/m The Good: A light, quick read with a realistic flavor that doesn’t get too heavy. Very cute premise and heavily character-centric with nice arcs. Obligatory hot cocoa scene. The Bad: The pacing dragged a bit, the side characters were pretty stock. There were some repetitive elements that came off clunky in execution. Nothing terrible just seemed like the author is a bit inexperienced in a few areas. Extra Notes: This, to me, read like a slow burn coffee shop AU fanfiction, so if you like that sort of thing, you’ll really enjoy this book. I, personally, enjoyed the fact that there was family-centric tension that wasn’t omg you’re gay! and instead focused on normal sibling problems. Also, I liked that the protag was in her 30s because a good chunk of recommended reads for queer books are YA and at some point its nice not to read about teenagers. Sex scenes. Personal Rating: 8/10 Recommend: Yes

Titles/Author: Letters Never Sent/ Sandra Moran Genre: romance, historical fiction Relationship(s): f/f The Good: Well constructed and interesting plot, realistic premise, suitable twists, lots of pertinent and salient issues, queer history in the US midwest The Bad: Not a lot. There are 2 main characters, a mother and daughter, so it does waffle between the past and present time, which isn’t balanced perfectly and could have stagnant spots. Extra Notes: Honestly, I’d like to find a lot more adult books like this one. It hit my radar as a Must Read, and I don’t always care of Must Reads, they tend to be hyped from a small pool of mediocre. This one was worth it but... on to the warnings: sex scenes, homophobia, internalized homophobia, rape, abortion and murder. Nothing was gritty, in fact, the story itself is serious but not overly important about it.  Personal Rating: 9.5/10 Recommend: Yes
