They are so brothers oh my fucking god. I just want Masamune to get up to the most devious deeds and force Tsubasa to come along with him. I want Masamune to bully him and Tsubasa to chase him down and thwack him with a foam Minecraft sword. I want Masamune to make Tsubasa do stupid challenges with him on his youtube channel, like gaming or baking dangerous concoctions. I want Tsubasa to say "there's no way you'll stay out all night" to confident party-goer Masamune, and for Masamune to call him at 11pm, tired out of his mind, saying "pls come pick me up🥺 and maybe get a Mickey D's on the way👉👈" and of course Tsubasa does just that. They would be the ultimate Fucking Idiot and Braincell duo.

Benkei and Demure

The besties ever. The big softies of Wild Fang. They are such loving and supportive friends to everyone, of course they're perfect for each other. I imagine them writing letters to each other for the entire period between Masters and Fury, with cute scribbles and pictures of wildlife from their respective homes and pressed flowers, and of course there's always a "Kyoya says hi!" when he really didn't and a "Nile says he misses you!" when of course he did. These two are the glue that holds Wild Fang together (literally in Benkei's case).

Yu and Kenta

Little guys just want to hang out and have fun. Is that too much to ask? Kenta was Yu's first true friend, who just liked him for him and wanted to hang out with him for no personal gain. And Yu really does believe in Kenta and his skills, despite what others think of his power level. And despite Kenta often being left behind on adventures, Yu always cheers and embraces him when they meet again. They're just such besties and I want the world for them they deserve happiness and silliness.

Daxiang and Chiyun

These two had more development in Fury in the span of five minutes than anyone else in that season had the entire time. Chiyun presents as this stubborn and uptight little dude who knows how to find his own way and doesn't take shit from anyone. But when it comes to Daxiang, he just melts in pure adoration and love. The thing Chiyun truly wants more than anything in the world is to be good enough to stand at Daxiang's side; but Daxiang assures him that he is already enough, and he always will be no matter how many times they fall. crikey. a year since I started writing Fateheart. Roughly. What a time that was.

and still is, actually. it's not like I've stopped. The third book, second sequel to The Starless Sea, is in the works. I took a break from it the past months because I have been quite unwell, but it is called The Lotus Flowers and it WILL get done it WILL it WILL it WILL.

I also have Fever Pitch to finish, which is an interrim story that was going to go along with the rest of the collection of stories in the extended canon, but is actually rapidly approaching another full-sized book. (I think Fateheart has warped my perspective slightly on what constitutes a full-length story hahah.)

@erinmorgenstern are you aware that Zachary Ezra Rawlins has moved permanently into my brain? He has truly set up his entire life and his gaming desk in here and refuses to get out.

I've spent more close and intentional creative time with these characters - with Zachary, Dorian, Kat, Madame Love Rawlins particularly - than any others ever in my life and by golly I'm having a great time.

Currently editing the latest Zachary/Dorian story to go up on Ao3 later today. It's called 'The Man Named Sky' and it is, courtesy of Katrina Hawkins, another dumb contrived time-travel plot (she loves them). I like this one a lot. It was supposed to be short, and I still think it's short, but it also turned out to be around 27k words, which my friends assure me is not, in fact, a short fic.

Ever onward, ever upwards. Book 4 is already in the planning, and then who knows. My mother keeps telling me to apply my attention to original works but until I have thoroughly and entirely worked through all my many, MANY thoughts about Dorian, I simply shall not be able to, I think.

And I'm having too much fun.

Gonna try to work on Fever Pitch (Set 5 years after Fateheart, 6 - or 9, depending on how you count it - years after The Starless Sea) while I'm at home for two weeks. It's an Alice and Wonderland-themed Starless Sea story, so that's going to be fun.

I have several other little gems to bash out for the extended Fateheart canon collection, and Lotus Flowers rolls slowly ever onward in the background like a slow-cooker pot with a dull red light that fills the kitchen with a slowly growing scent of herbs.

I am a writer!!! I have so many things in progress and so many things I am excited to work on!! And literally all of them are from or about The Starless Sea!! Haha!! WHat!!!!

i said fire for him too and then my friend said she could see him focusing on lightning and i felt that was so fitting! since it is a bending technique that required a lot of precision and skill it just felt like such a good match. he'd take bending very seriously and work really hard to hone his skills. wouldn't really use his bending skills much for goofing around or mundane things.

my bestie said earth and i also thought of earth too but somehow he is just very water bender shaped to me--maybe because i associate him with the color blue

Part 2 warlord boogaloo

1st day back as an amateur illustrator and you'll never guess who just lost Dumb Roulette. i return after a 2 month hiatus and realise to my horror i've been drawing clothes from the MING dynasty the THE WHOLE TIME. to add insult to injury i also spelled the warlord's name wrong. in a moment of madness i consider redoing the whole thing but that bird's already flown so i decide to forge ahead with my time-traveling warlord and his merry band of anachronisms. the ghost of luo guanzhong gives me a single nod of approval, before continuing his tirade against john woo.

2nd day as an amateur illustrator and i come out absolutely SWINGING. i burn the midnight oil and finish four panels in less than 2 days. my abilities have improved drastically over the break, with the benefit of better materials and better research im absolutely steamrolling this project. (don't ask what happened my best ink, my table, my pants and my bathtub. it's not important.)

3rd day as an amateur illustrator and i am experiencing what might be charitably called 'delusions of grandeur.' i decide to completely scrap my old storyboard, dial everything up to 11 and break off the knob. the last panel is going to be a massive A3 piece featuring the whole ensemble. every zhang-three and li-four and the horse too. it's going to be SO COOL...when i eventually figure out what to draw. as this point I am making things up as i go along without the clarity of an end-goal but i'm not worried. I have momentum from my pervious victories and morale is high. who needs a stupid storyboard? if it works for Miyazaki it works for me.

4th day as an amateur illustrator. i am not Miyazaki.

5th day as an amateur illustrator. the campaign has ground to a halt and i'm suffering attrition.

6th day as an amateur illustrator, if i was a wannabe-hegemon 2k years ago, my current predicament can be summed up thusly; devastating defeat. supplies routed. facing plague, mass mutiny, and very bad feng shui. we've resorted to eating our horses. pls pls pls send reinforcements. i'll let u marry my daughter.

7th day as an amateur illustrator, i finally break out of encirclement (drawing 8+ versions of one panel), valiantly abandon my wife and children, and seek refuge in the South (go to my besties house for a sleepover)

9th day as an amateur illustrator and the power of friendship prevails! i take a heroic last stand and finish the last 2 panels. My friend and I model the hand-holding from the last panel and I use a pillowcase + safety pin to replicate the sleeve. not only am i a rare and sublime genius im also incredibly, incredibly humble. can't believe i ever doubted myself. everything is great peace and love on planet earth ect.

1st day as an amateur illustrator. I spent three hours collecting pictures of ancient china only to realise i was looking at the wrong dynasty but I forgot to label the pictures and i dont have an organisational system in place so i have no way of seperating them from the correct dynasty, inadvertently creating the world's dumbest and most low-stakes russian roulette.

4th day as an amateur illustrator. i found some really good sources on ancient china but they're all in chinese and i can't read chinese so i'm been painstakingly Ctr + P --ing it into google translate until finally i get to a scanned pdf and at this point i just decided to cut my losses and get ratio'd by armchair historians.

5th day as an amateur illustrator. im 3 days ahead of schedule and make a vague but grandiose boast about my incredible skills and enviable work ethic. i also have a 50 point essay due in two weeks i haven't touched but that's neither here nor there.

6th day as an amateur illustrator. i realise i've miss-read the dynasty for the Warlord's little hat (apparently ming and han look very similar when you're sleep deprived) so i have to white-out ALL his panels and redraw his hat. it's at this point i start to realise life is imitating art.

7th day as an amateur illustrator. i realise i've been in the wrong dynasty this whole time. op was probably talking about the tumultuous 3 kingdoms period (late 2nd century) NOT the peaceful Han dynasty (early 2nd century) which seems blindingly obvious in hindsight. i fight the urge to convert all my manuscripts to kindling.

8th day as an amateur illustrator. i get some sleep and realise the 3k period was only 60 years long. i can still use my han references. i don't really have to do anything except change my notes.

10th day as an amateur illustrator. I wasn't happy with the background on a panel because the foreshortening was slightly off-center so i cut out the parts i liked, pasted it onto a new sheet of paper and redrew it. no my essay is still not finished stop asking.

12th day as an amateur illustrator. i finally finish the comic 3 days behind schedule. i bus to the library with my stuff in a folder because i don't have a printer at home then i realise in my sleep deprived state i forgot to rub out the pencil lines and you can see them on the scan but i don't have a rubber so i use the pdf editor to white them out with my trackpad and then the wifi at the library keeps cutting out so I can't upload any files. i've decided this is a sign that i should finish my essay before i bus back home.
