low key i think to deny Riko's trauma is to deny his narrative importance in the story.

like Riko's trauma related to his father parallels neil's. His concept of brotherhood adds complexity to Andrew and Aaron's relationship. He acts not just as an antagonist but as a foil to other character's relationship to trauma and violence.

to solely view riko through the lense of his actions is to miss the point. He is a character in a story, not a real breathing human being.

#i don't know guys like i though we were having fun here #lets go back to making up literary motifs that are probably nonexistent in a self published book series thats basically a sports manga #i'll start #isn't it nifty that riko was abandoned by his father and then abused and ostracized by his guardian figure in a very similar way to neil #isn't it fun that riko was cast aside by his father for his brother just as andrew was cast aside by his mother for his brother #isnt it fun that aaron kills someone to protect his brother while riko's story ends with his brother killing him #love earned through death in both ways #isnt it fun that riko's hunt to be the best ends with his brother killing him in the same way he essentially 'killed' kevin #by smashing his hand #isnt it fun how riko is just as desperate for love and attention and belonging as everyone else #there is a story in which riko is saved and heals from his past in the same way every other character does #the fun part is that story exists yet it is not the story that is told #like come onnnnn #“riko is evil”#“rikos trauma isnt as bad as *insert character”#“riko did this - riko did that - bluh bluh bluh”#im boreeeeeeddd #gnat be quiet #riko moriyama

i cracked this morning and read the first like 200 words of my og novel that i wrote when i was 13/self-published at 14

why did hank green post it on his instagram with praise?? like i think of it and i cringe. today i re-read the first 200 words and i wanted to stop existing?? why did my mom give him a copy of it i did not ask her to do that??? i just went to one of his concerts in 2014 and my mom just gave the book to somebody and for some reason that somebody gave it to hank green and then suddenly im in the crowd 15yo new best friend bc nerdfighteria and hank green is like "oh somebody gave one of the guys this book just before the show and i took a look at it and i kinda like it it's pretty good" and up he holds none other than my og novel he goes "a 14yo wrote this and it's pretty good this affirms my faith in humanity or something like a very young not-adult did this whole novel and it's not bad that's cool" idk what he said it was 10 years ago. and there's me in the crowd freaking the fuck out i say to my new bff who i had just met at the beginning of the concert bc we were standing next to each other like "BRO THAT'S MY BOOK" new bff is like "BRO THAT'S YOUR BOOK???" and starts jumping up and down for attention like "YO THAT'S THIS GUY'S BOOK" hank green hears points at me and goes "HEY HE'S RIGHT THERE YOUR BOOK'S PRETTY COOL KID" AND THEN!!! HE FUCKING PUT IT ON HIS INSTA??? AND PRAISED IT??? THE STICKY NOTE MY MOM LEFT ON IT WITH LIKE 10 WORDS OF SYNOPSIS STILL ON THE COVER??? ALL OF HIS INSTA FOLLOWER'S SAW MY MOM'S HANDWRITING??? AND MY WHOLE ASS INITIALS + LAST NAME??? A COMPLIMENTARY REVIEW BY HANK GREEN HIMSELF??? WHY?? WHY WAS MY 15 MINUTES OF FAME THAT CRINGE ASS Y/A NOVEL???

listen. i was 13 when i wrote that book. i was so full of brand new baby teen angst. i do not understand why hank green did not open the book flip through a couple pages go "oof this kid needs a therapist and a writing coach" and never mention it again. i do not understand why he mentioned it on stage, i don't know why he put it on his instagram, it was so bad. ohmygod. i wish i could forget it ever happened

#shitposting #like the plot was good i guess #i was a very creative 13yo #but like i was making jokes that were way too old for me #THE OPENING SCENE IS MC IN PRISON BEING SOLICITED FOR SEX #WHY DID I WRITE THAT AT 13 #it was like #sci fi #mc was a princess except she was also an expert assassin just casually for no reason idk i was 13 #and she was sent to prison for being half this alien/half that alien #bc her mother had an affair from a man from the neighboring planet then covered it up #and her so-called father was the king of the whole planet #and then she broke out of prison blah blah went back home got framed for her not-father's murder something something #there was an ex-boyfriend who was eventually going to be revealed to be like a primordial ancient being #and the new love interest was like blonde boy next door im your best friend but i totally wanna bone you #i named him sevawyn after severus snape bc he was like the opposite of snape and still in love with his best friend #and it ended with mc's ex best friend trying to kill mc but surprise the poison doesn't work bc she's a half-breed #the end game was supposed to be like finding a way to stop the whole universe being swallowed by The Void #the teen angst was so strong #AND MY PARENTS STILL WANT THE SEQUEL AND THREEQUEL #LIKE MY MOM BROUGHT IT UP TWO WEEKS AGO #WHAT WAS SO GOOD ABOUT THAT CRINGE ASS PRE-TEEN ANGST FEST #LET IT DIE GAWD #but man if i ever do finish my current novel and it's published and gets popular #i would love hank green to comment on it too #i would love to be able to dm him and remind him of that 2015 concert when a stage hand gave him a copy of some 14yo's book #and tell him he and his brother kept inspiring me to keep writing and keep getting better #also would love to hear his honest opinion of my cringe ass y/a novel in comparison to my current writing level #i've gotten so much better since i was 13 #to be clear i don't only write fanfic i have a lot of og short stories and the start of a novel

this is the ask that has me vv embarrassingly admitting that the last time i picked up a book was around three years ago bc we were studying it in school😭 i actually hate reading w/ a burning passion, so the list of books ive finished is small and the list of books i like enough to recommend is practically non-existent. nonnie i'm sorry i'm completely useless in this department😔💔

that being said, dostoevsky isn't everyone's cup of tea but i like his stuff so if his brand of storytelling is up your alley i'd say looking into his works wouldn't be a waste of time. crime & punishment and the idiot are some of the more notable ones (for good reason) iirc the double was my introduction to him and netochka nezvanova was never finished but the start was promising enough,, i'm not abt to make this a book review tho so i'll stop there ahaha🤧

If any society as a whole really cared about uplifting and supporting rape survivors as much as we like to pretend we do, or even half as much as we like to make excuses for abusers and rapists, perhaps women wouldn't feel the need to keep the abhorrent crimes perpetrated against them to themselves for years for fear of being re-traumatised by the legal system and the court of public opinion.

#just read an appalling review of mira's book #basically accusing her of making up events to sensationalise her book #and questioning why she never reported or revealed it publically until writing a book published after her death #and why she didn't name the man she described as a 'very well known public figure'#she literally wrote herself that she never reported because she knew the police wouldn't give a shit #and given the way the media and public in croatia tore her to shreds #forcing her into exile from her home #i can hardly imagine she would have found much support in that arena either #the accusation here is all the more egregious for the fact #that she spends a grand total of two paragraphs in a 600 page work discussing this event in her life #and does so in a very straightforward manner and then moves on #reading articles about mira to distract myself possibly wasn’t the best idea #given how exceedingly awful and misogynistic certain areas of the balkan media tend to be about her

and like yeah lol

i havent read it yet but i could have told u this from listening to fennah talk for five minutes

this is the kind of guy who thinks that saying he takes no stance at all on the politics of his book means that its more intelligent than if he did

hes the sort of guy who i get the impression feels that having Strong Feelings About Anything means that you are wrong simply for having strong feelings (this is based on vibes from what hes said in vids etc; he has not to my knowledge outright said anything like this im not trying to slander anyone, this is just the impression he gives off)

but he is kind of a textbook example of why “kill your darlings” isnt bad advice, and why sometimes you need someone to say “idk man this doesnt read super great”

watched a livestream with him and the guy stumbles reading through passages of his own book, not b/c hes a bad reader but b/c he Really likes using as many words as he can to say anything

anyway fennah is one of those internet creators who makes me cock my head in both admiration for that devotion and bravery in really putting his stuff out there and boldly and proudly embracing how weird it is

but also in a wince, because it really, really is frustrating how much thought he seems to put into literally everything except what it is he’s wanting to say or share with the world, and what seems to be a massive aversion to researching aspects of culture, nature, economy, environment, even parody (as he describes the book as a hyper-parody of the animal kingdom, which i can see and it does have this really over the top extremity to it that i think is fun! but needs to be handled better)

he talks about how he likes his characters to not behave how they look like they Should behave- but then at the same time elaborates that he designs his gentler characters to outwardly show traits more in line with herbivores than carnivores, like his more intense and violent characters, which is both like, textbook visual queueing and also feeds into the whole “herbivore soft weak gentle carnivore big scary mean powerful” thing which is just. massively inaccurate

anyway the entirety of fennah’s works and their history absolutely fascinate me in this really detached way and i am rolling them over in my mind and inspecting them like a neat bug

i will read the book eventually and probably enjoy it if only b/c excessively wordy hyper detailed prose is genuinely fun for me to read, and i know its going to have me rolling my eyes A Lot

#the august few #fennah #i do not have any beef with fennah #i literally do not know enough about him as a person to have beef with him #i own the book b/c i am Genuinely delighted at such a weird and maximalist world getting a massive published book #from a guy who made his weird little live action/cgi science fantasy show on youtube #ghostboyfriend would describe it as me once again doing internet anthropology #which yeah it is #im fond of it as a strange artifact of internet #and completely unrestrained and unedited fantasy can be inspiring to me in a lot of ways even when its not very good #blah blah blah many thoughts and not the best at words to talk about them but yeah
