Do you have any book recommendations?
Tumblr media
this is the ask that has me vv embarrassingly admitting that the last time i picked up a book was around three years ago bc we were studying it in school😭 i actually hate reading w/ a burning passion, so the list of books ive finished is small and the list of books i like enough to recommend is practically non-existent. nonnie i'm sorry i'm completely useless in this department😔💔
that being said, dostoevsky isn't everyone's cup of tea but i like his stuff so if his brand of storytelling is up your alley i'd say looking into his works wouldn't be a waste of time. crime & punishment and the idiot are some of the more notable ones (for good reason) iirc the double was my introduction to him and netochka nezvanova was never finished but the start was promising enough,, i'm not abt to make this a book review tho so i'll stop there ahaha🤧

THIS but also the fact so many people think yoko taro's opinions are the only ones that matter anyways and that if HE'S not directing it and ""making every decision"" (which he already isn't) somehow that makes it "lesser" in the series???? Like GOD people's weird parasocial deification-like view they have and the amount of projection they put onto what is literally a real, human person is INSANE and it's like,,, aside from just not knowing anyone involved with the series OUTSIDE of like,,, jun eishima maybe (Yasui Akira had been working in the Drakengard series since game one and knew the team before Drakengard even existed, yet half the time you hear him spoken about is in the context of "some guy" directing DOD2 Like NO???? he literally has been in the game industry since 1996 at LEAST and has gone on to work as a producer for the Dragon Quest series!!!! Fuck outta here!!!!!!) it's ALWAYS yoko taro's opinions, yoko taro's """vision""" or whatever and in VERY FEW contexts it makes sense but you know what????? Despite him being the frequent director of the series, the only ones who truly "own" the series is the team that puts the work into it bc believe it or not, it's not just yoko taro!!! hes not the only one who matters bc there is a whole TEAM of people involved with their own "visions" and interpretations of the series and in the context of DOD2, finally getting to the point i wanted to make with all this rambling 😭 i apologise for all that lmao
Letting other people get to take the helm of the series they put so much work into and that they love and be able to tell a story that THEY had their own vision of in that world is beautiful fuckin work actually!!! Just because it doesn't have Yoko Taro's face and his own "style" stamped all over it doesn't make it automatically "bad" or "weak" or "boring" by default because idk if I'm just missing something but i kinda really hate the idea of a world with that much potential just being under one person's perspective forever!!!!
The idea of a "fix" to someone else's perspective on not even the world itself, but just the direction a story and world can go in (without even undermining or playing itself as "superior" to it's predecessor, i might add!!!!) being "I want the GOOD writer to do your ideas himself because these are awful" is just so..... Like DOD2's writing isn't perfect but these people's issue with it is that some guy they don't even care enough to see beyond the scope of "Not Yoko Taro" had the balls to make DOD2 it's own thing instead of just rehashing another person's work.
TL;DR since i suck at making points: dod fans weird parasocial relationship with yoko taro scares me and it's weird so many of them literally want the same exact game, storylines, viewpoints, style, etc. and are allergic to anything outside of what they personally have established as "Yoko Taro's style". Like if it ain't broke don't fix it, and maybe I'm just blind but imho that is HIGHLY subjective and also a really,,, interesting opinion to have in a game/series so heavily based off the idea of subversiveness and bringing something new to the table of JRPGs as a whole
I can't help but giggle whenever people start on the "We need a Drakengard 2 remake but written by Yoko Taro so it can be good!!!!!" bit bc all i can think of is gismor acting like the same kind of cartoon villain but this time with ridiculously convoluted dialogue chalking up to the same "if you're weak you're nothing" philosophy the whole game and instead of the vague backstory drop in your final battle against him you only get his "tragic context" through an overpriced DLC where he suddenly gets really emotional recalling that he was ENSLAVED as part of the Empire and learned might makes right in a mission where you kill 1,200 child beggars
