Best Free VPNs For PC 2024: Click, Connect, Secure UR PC Now
youtube
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts internet traffic, ensuring privacy and security by masking your IP address. It allows access to geo-restricted content, bypasses censorship, and prevents tracking by advertisers and hackers. VPNs are essential for safe browsing, particularly on public Wi-Fi networks, and protect sensitive data.
VPNs, heralding from the '90s, have surged, especially post-COVID-19. The best VPNs balance security with accessibility, while free VPNs offer a taste of privacy, like free VPN for Chrome. Yet, paid VPNs often outperform, providing robust protection. The Best Free VPN for PC? It’s a blend of safety and cost-efficiency.

List of programs and stuff I use
[pt: List of programs and stuff I use ./end pt]
Disclaimer: This is in no way trying to say I have the best setup of all time or anything. The point of this post is mostly to introduce people to cool things they may not know about, or a place to point to when someone asks what I use!
(Last updated: 6/28/24)
Browser
[pt: browser ./end pt]
Firefox (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Obviously I recommend Firefox above all else, especially with chromium-based browsers moving onto manifest V3.
Bitwarden (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Good password manager! Used it for years with no complaints!
AdNauseam (Firefox/Chrome) - My adblocker. It's built upon uBlock Origin and has all the same features, but it actively clicks on the ads to waste advertiser money. If that's not up your alley, uBlock Origin is fantastic too!
Wayback Machine extension (Firefox/Chrome/Safari) - Allows you to make snapshots of pages, or view old snapshots if a page isn't loading correctly!
XKit ReWritten (Firefox/Chrome) - Pretty much a must-have for Tumblr. Has a ton of features to make navigating this site much better. Full feature list here!
Discord
[pt: Discord ./end pt]
Vencord (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - A modified Discord client that adds support for plugins and themes. Basically allows you to install plugins from a massive list that improves Discord. (Technically against ToS. Basically, don't post that you're using it in big servers, and turn off your themes before sharing screenshots.)
Bunny (Android/IOS) - If you miss Vendetta for Discord, Bunny is an actively maintained fork of Vendetta! Basically the same as above, but for Android/IOS instead of desktop. Same warnings about ToS apply.
Aliucord (Android) - Miss the old Android app feel, and still want to have plugins/themes? Pretty cool but has a less impressive theme/plugin selection. Same warnings about ToS apply.
Bluecord (Android) - Another Discord modification without the new Discord UI!
Youtube
[pt: Youtube ./end pt]
Freetube (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - A desktop Youtube client with adblock and sponsorblock built in. Still in beta, but very good.
Sponsorblock (Firefox/Chrome) - Pretty much a must-have for watching Youtube these days. Automatically skips over sponsors, self-promos, interaction bait, outros, intros, etc. Highly configurable!
Dearrow (Firefox/Chrome) - Haven't used this very long but I love it. Gets rid of vague or clickbait titles/thumbnails and replaces it with descriptive and more accurate thumbnails. Also built into Freetube now!
Newpipe (Android) - Lightweight Youtube client. I haven't used it myself much but people swear by it!
ReVanced (Android) - Modded Youtube client with Sponsorblock, Return Youtube Dislike, and Youtube Premium features. Doesn't support Dearrow as of 6/25/24 :( (PLEASE BE CAREFUL INSTALLING THIS. If you don't know what you're doing, you can cause some damage!)
Spotify
[pt: spotify ./end pt]
Spicetify (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - Spotify modded client. Has adblock, themes, etc! Think Vencord, but for Spotify.
Misc.
[pt: Misc ./End pt]
Obsidian (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Basically a personal wiki for notetaking! A bit of a learning curve. Fanfic writers and worldbuilders... go feral.
Notepad++ (Windows) - A must-have text editor. Might be on more platforms but can't confirm?
Mullvad VPN (Windows/Android) - The only VPN I can 100% recommend. Cheap, fast, and really cares about your privacy. It's a little under $6 USD a month!
NVDA (Windows) - A free screenreader I use for reading large blocks of text. (Notice: I am not visually impaired to the point I rely on a screenreader to navigate my PC. I use it on occasion to read text to me because I have a hard time reading. If you're looking for advice on screenreaders for the visually impaired unfortunately I'm not a good source! Maybe check out the #visually impaired, #blind, or #accessibility?)
Syncthing (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android) - Lets you sync folders across devices. It's especially good with Obsidian.
"Tequito, I didn't find what I wanted!"
[pt: "Tequito, I didn't find what I wanted!" ./end pt]
I'm sorry. :( If you're looking for a program I have personally mentioned using in the past, feel free to shoot me an ask or DM! Or hey... maybe try searching the letters "FMHY" and having a look around? *wink*

Okay I swear I'm not a narc, I just never learned the ways of the internet, but like... where/how do you get good footage of things? Is there a screen recorder or a downloader that's in my blind spot? I want to make edits and gifs and all the wonderful things, but I don't know how to get the movie into my software ;-;
I never screen record, the best option for high quality video is to have an actual video file. First off, I have a big collection of things on disc so some of them are ripped from discs (there are loads of tutorials online). But in all honesty the best way to get high quality films and tv is to learn to torrent so you have an actual high quality video file. It’s also an important skill with how many films/tv are hard to get, out of print, erased from their home service. Remember to get a vpn :)
And for YouTube/vimeo a good video downloader is a must no screen recording required.
For games I’m currently fighting for my life against the fact that Xbox removed the direct way to get your videos from your console to your pc and I’m going to beat Microsoft with a hammer.

hi magz, you seem to know a lot about technology. is there any good free anti-virus software you would recommend for the average person to use? no worries if not. thank you
If on Windows 10 - 11 For personal computer (not enterprise n servers) ...
Average Windows user should use Windows Defender and Windows Security (default built-in), turn on setting. update every so- so often. and let run checks every once while.
As Windows default currently better for Personal, than most anti-virus, unlike decade ago - where windows defender was subpar n malwarebites free was best-ish for personal. have change.
most important part actually everything else beside anti-virus !
so follow other digital privacy + safety guides have recommend for other parts. especially for browser n downloads, as that how most malware come thru. (some other reccs should be in magz pinned post, some need update info tho) example:
use adblockers, most recc ublock origin. not adblock plus free version, as those allow ads by companies that pay them. -
Use mullvad browser even if not have VPN, for incognito. -
For firefox users, check "Arkenfox - firefox hardening wiki" especially 'extensions' section (especially especially ublock origin part of 'extensions') - but would not recc average person use arkenfox as-is, just check some infos n change browser few settings that are ok with change. Only use arkenfox.js if really really prefer privacy security more than... anything (not most people). -
n if are worry of security n malware more - use virtual machines on computer or tailsOS on USB stick, whenever do risky stuff. for most virus risk, won't memory of what do, n not infect whole PC. -
edit: oh yah @instantmessage remind. VirusTotal exist for scan malware links, files, n sus stuff. n can be use with browser. (people also use those for send queries on if something for real a virus, on reddit.)
Other operating systems? other time.

For all the EU girlies, guys and others that are crying over not getting TWD:DD on Netflix outside of the US. I feel your pain.
Go be a pirate, reddit will tell you how if you're not familiar with websites. (Addblock is your best friend.)
Get a VPN and watch it on Netflix anyways. (NordVPN is great, we have it too)
Buy the DVD and play it on a pc/laptop (those aren't region locked, unlike dvd players and consoles)
I know it's amazing to be lazy and have everything available to stream, but we all know AMC hates us. 💔

Also you mentioned a VPN, but are there any free ones? Specifically like a Firefox extension or something like that? I can't pay money for one, and i'm gonna switch to Firefox soon anyways (long story). Also ik I said this before but thx for the kitties :D
I'm not very knowledgeable on PC VPNs but I found this article linking some
What you've got to be aware is that if they're free they're always gonna have limitations.
For your phone I'm only knowledgeable on Android. Opera has a built in limited VPN. It works only on the Opera browser though.
However I've found an app that basically works as a VPN for your whole phone
It's limited in servers and I recommend you keep checking the VPN symbol from time to time as after a while it automatically turns off the VPN I think but it works for all apps that use your location which is really good.
I went looking and found this one that has a bunch more server options
It can have very long ads but that's the price for being free. Using it right now and it works 👍
I've now also tried this third option
At first it may appear like it has more options than the last one but don't be fooled! Most of the servers are premium. It does have better options if you want your location to be the US or Canada but that's mostly it. The Super Unlimited Proxy is better for European server options.
Well that's what I found for free! I hope it helps even if I know it's probable that you have an Apple device instead of Android because that's the US norm. —_—

Day 9 of Whumptober 2024: Hey, Warrick
No. 9: OBSESSION Broken Window | Bruises | “Frame me up on the wall, just to keep me out of trouble.” (Fall Out Boy, Irresistible)
AO3 got banned in my country and VPNs have not been working well on my PC lately, so I am not going to post these there for now. But hopefully I can do that at some point.
This is taking place in my own DnD/fantasy world.
Barnaby is a fungal mage who loves mixing drinks. A mycologist mixologist, if you will.
Tumblr media
--------------
Hey, Warrick
Barnaby is pouring wine for a new customer as he watches one of his regular customers fly through a closed window into his bar, shattering it into pieces, scattering the high-quality glass all over the floor and scaring away nearby drinkers.
"Hey, Warrick!" He waves at the old man with a welcoming smile.
Poor old Warrick must have gotten into gambling again, he thinks.
Warrick slowly gets up from the floor. Somehow. He falls back on his ass after taking two steps towards him and the bar. This throw is clearly far from the first hit he's taken this night. Half of his face appears to be one big bruise, which has clearly not come from his current rough landing. His one open eye looks at Barnaby, silently pleading for help.
The front door flies open as half a dozen ruffians spill inside, making the nearby patrons move out of the way. They all turn to look at Warrick and start walking towards him without another word. Barnaby feels ignored. How rude.
"I am assuming you are here to pay for the broken window?" He asks in a singsongy tone with a tight wide smile.
"I wouldn't ask for that again, if I were you," one of the grunts warns him barely looking up at the bartender.
"I see… Well, then I won't ask."
All six men stop in their tracks simultaneously, unable to lift their feet from the floor. Old man Warrick uses this opportunity to scramble away into a corner, knowing he should be careful when this power is used. He has seen a similar scene a couple of times before. He has an idea about how this is going to go.
"Oi! What's wrong?"
"You bastard!"
They look down only to realize that their feet are trapped by patches of mushrooms that have grown seemingly out of nowhere all over their feet. Four of the attackers try, without success, to lift their feet, while two of them whip out hand crossbows, immediately sending two bolts at Barnaby who does not need to get out of the way due to their lousy aim. Instead, he jolts towards the bolts as a thick layer of mushroom armor grows under his shirt on his chest, taking both shots. The armor does not let its owner get hurt, but Barnaby's mouth spreads in a sinister smile.
"You almost shattered one of my best bottles…" He pronounces distinctively through almost gritted teeth, pointing at a board at entrance. "Rule 4. Do not use weapons in the bar."
The mushrooms at their feet have climbed up their legs to their knees already, making some of the ruffians whimper in fear. One of them tries to chop at the growths, hitting himself in the leg in the process and crying out in pain. The crossbow wielders drops their weapons and raise their hands in an attempt to surrender.
Barnaby shakes his head.
The mushrooms grow even more. Their caps enlarge until in unison they release a large cloud of spores. They struggle, losing more and more of their consciousness with each breath taken. In a couple of seconds, they all drop like flies.
"I wouldn't come back here again, if I were you," Barnaby chuckles. "Warrick, my dear friend. Could you do me a favor and throw them away? They are blocking the entrance... And bring me everything you find in their pockets… I do need to fix this."
He nods at the window as the mushroom armor dissipates.
"Of course, Barns. You really saved my ass there… Thank you."
The old man nods eagerly, hurrying to drag the unconscious bodies out of the establishment. The older patrons erupt in laughter and excited chatter, and Barnaby can hear some coins being placed on the table. No doubt there was a bet made as to which of the attackers would drop first or something along those lines. He turns to his bottle collection, making sure he did not miss any damage. The finest of the finest drinks. He should really invest in some thick glass or maybe even a protection charm to keep these shelves safe.

Just a reminder yall you can mod baldurs gate if you’re on pc. Lemme get you started with an Aasimar mod.
Download Vortex mod Manager, this’ll be your best friend when it comes to installing mods. You can find it here: https://www.nexusmods.com/about/vortex/
Follow the prompts to get it set up and you’re good to go. If you have any trouble just look up ‘downloading vortex’ on YouTube. There’s a plethora of tutorials uploaded regularly with each update.
Next, download your mods. For this one let’s use the Aasimar mod I’ve been most interested in recently https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/4159?tab=description
It allows access to race based perks, wing and facial customisations etc just like any other race in game.
Next, check the mod requirements. Some mods require other things to work smoothly, especially for things such as character animations, unique dialogue trees or more:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one requires the improved UI mod you can download here: https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/366
If you’re confused on how to download said mods here’s a simple way. Click download with vortex, and click on slow download if you’re not paying for the premium service. It’ll ask to open vortex, click open vortex and the mod manager will do the rest of the work.
Or if it’s a manual file. Don’t be scared. Click download and open up where the file was saved in your files. Then simply drag and paste into vortex manually. The mod manager will configure the data and install it from there without any further input needed from you.
Remember there’s more tutorials available online, I’ve just seen a few people afraid or unsure where to start. And you can do this for a variety of games so long as you’re downloading mods specific for those games. Don’t try loading a baldurs gate mod into skyrim your pc will cry etc.
AND! Most importantly. Don’t be afraid of viruses. All these mods go through EXTENSIVE checks with nexus and they or vortex will filter out any thing dangerous. It’s completely safe but if you are nervous, a vpn or any virus protection software will keep you safe where they fail.
But with that said, happy modding! A new adventure awaits!

Hi! How do you make your gifs? Do you have any tips or tutorials for beginners?
Hello! <3
I am really just a beginner myself to be honest, I already knew how to use photoshop a bit and how to download the episodes but this is the amazing tutorial that I followed when starting out: THIS ONE
To download the episodes I use uTorrent (I advise you to search how to make it work faster online by copying the parameters to download faster) and get them in high quality 1080p from this site here and I can connect to that site because I'm using a VPN - mine is called browsec and it's a web extension for Firefox - if you don't know how to use torrent here is an explanation
after I have the files in my pc I downloaded the video player GOM and I use the option to take automatic screencaps and make folders in my pc with the frames I need to make the gif then I follow all the steps you can find in that tutorial
I use Adobe Photoshop cc2015 that I may have taken already cracked from a torrent too if you know what I mean lol search online how to download cracked programs for pc and follow what the internet says because I do not know how to explain this and I don't want to make you break your pc somehow with bad advice
you can find many many photoshop tutorials on youtube on how to make gifs and how to use it in general, after you learn the process it's faster if you learn how to create ''Actions'' on photoshop to do everything faster so that you don't have to repeat all the steps all the time but I just learned this yesterday so like, I'm not the best one to teach others yet lmao
this is one to learn how to blend two gifs in one
for the caption and to make colourful text
to have what they say in the gif faster you can find transcripts of the episodes here, sometimes it's wrong but not often, I usually check the dialogue in the video and see if it's the same before captioning and then make it fit with when they are saying that
hope this helps!! :)
