Favorite first kiss?
Favorite First Kisses!
Doozie of a question. Here we go...
1 Until We Meet Again
I mean COME on. How could this not be the #1 best first kiss? It's so gentle and so good and so hot and just... EVERYTHING a first kiss should be in life. A++ romantic
2 Old Fashion Cupcake
THE LONG SHOT. The desperation. The finger bite. The oozing THIRST. A++ quality desire incarnate
3 Why R U? Korea
Korea, scooping in a top spot? It's just the body language, the striding in, dropping the backpack, the surprised MUTUAL response (no flinching), and all the yearning. A++ want
(Foreshadow: This may... or may not... be my top kiss of 2023.)
4 Bad Buddy
Seriously boys, BOYS! You had to make it so beautiful and so painfully heartbreaking at the same time? Thanks for that. A++ pain
(They may have a light kiss before this one, I can't remember. I keep meaning to do a BB rewatch but I have to gear up for it.)
5 Semantic Error
I mean, well, OBVIOUSLY. Just A++ they perfect, no notes
6 Second Chance
I am pretty sure this one got best kiss of 2021. All you KinnPorche stans are sleeping on this little gem = Tong delivering what amounts to BLs best drunk kiss ever. FIGHT ME. A++ confused needy babies
7 About Youth
Speaking of sweet af first kisses from first timers. This one drips in sweet innocence including a rainbow and some smiles. A++ first sweethearts
8 HIStory 2 Crossing the Line
Okay the actors kiss for a dream sequence before this but this is the characters' first kiss, so that kinda counts, right? It's just such a pretty kiss. A++ stay on target, stay on theme, utterly unique
9 My Dear Gangster Oppa
Ya know this show is just so much fun and so solid and this pair deserves more accolades then their previous series afforded them. A++ finally, well done you
10 I Feel You Linger in the Air
Okay it's just all the dialogue and execution around this kiss is great and then the kiss ALSO doesn't disappoint. Plus permission and snark and so much more. A+++ class & storytelling
Also, whaan (sweet) is a really good word to have seared into one's brain in Thailand. Useful when ordering drinks.
Okay they kinda kissed before but this is the one that counts:
I didn't know how else to put this category but I had to include it so I could include this kiss:
We Best Love
The crying bridge-top kiss. I mean COME ON. One of my favorite kisses of all time. I love it when the weep+smooch.
La Pluie
Honestly? All their kisses are good so I can't remember if this was their first but, it great. Frankly, off all their kisses it's not my absolute favorite, but they deserve a mention because... wow boys. Just... wow.
The Eclipse
Because of their dynamic I am pretty sure there was something before this one, but this one lives in my head.
Be Loved In House I Do
I'm not sure this counts as their first because I can't remember the sequence in BLIHID (he through line is a bit wonky in my brain) but it is a killer kiss.
There should be more Taiwan but...
The thing is, once a Taiwanese BL starts delivering great kisses they just keep it up. So unless the narrative puts particularly strong plot intent on the "firstness" of that first kiss, they just get all sexy domestic muddled in my head.
Honor the Crumbs - Sides & Shorts, Best First Kisses
Some More
"You can kiss me, heong."
2 Moons 2 - MingKit
It's just such a sweetly perfect first kiss of the very first time variety. Before About Youth, we had these two.
Cutie Pie - NueaSin
Kissing the kiss that won them their own series. No other audition needed. In the land of amazing kisses, and up against Zee, this ONE stood way out. Very good boys. Very good indeed.
kiss x kiss x kiss - perfect scandal (AKA the office ep)
Look, this is the kiss we should have gotten in Cherry Magic. It's great, both the hesitant "permission given" first part and everything that comes next. Track this down if you can, it's a lovely little short from Japan.
My Secret Love - TimMai
Very minor side dishes but they were all I cared about in this show. They gave me the kiss I wanted even if they didn't get the screen time the deserved.
You're My Sky - SanAi
We all know they stole this show, not that there was much to steal.
Kiss Me Again - PeteKao
Maybe not the best as a kiss, but it was 2016 and this was SO SIGNIFICANT to the fandom, to the plot of the show, to coming out, to EVERYTHING. This is THE TayNew kiss. I will never forget it. Never.
I don't have a good screen cap but MarkOuwen's kiss in the taxi in Love is Science? was also fantastic.
(source)
Kisses as of Dec 2023. Not responsible for great first kisses that come after this date.
Opinion and preferences based on these ideas of good kiss chemistry.
I want you thoughts, RT and add your favorites or leave a comment. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

A/N: For the Kingdom Hearts Halloween Zine! Twitches was my favourite Halloween movie as a child.
…
…
…
…
There were many, many exciting things Sora thought of when he considered October. The obvious—Halloween, pumpkins, candy, and spooky movies. The less obvious—the crunchy leaves, the bright colours, the warmth of his snuggly sweater. The most important—his birthday. All of these were just off the top of his head. If Sora needed to, he could come up with a hundred-page manifesto of why October was amazing. Except that sounded a lot like homework and he’d rather enjoy October than write about it.
Still, no matter how long that list was, the one thing that would never be on it was being cooped up inside the library studying. They weren’t even near a window, so Sora couldn’t even see the colourful trees. The only thing on the table in front of him were books and a mountain of lined paper. Grumpy, Sora rested his chin on his hands and stared across the table at his best friend, Riku. “Come on,” he whined, sticking out his bottom lip to make his pout even sadder. “Let’s do something fun.”
The stick-in-the-mud that he was, Riku completely ignored him, instead flipping through his notes like Sora hadn’t said a word. Of course he’d do that. The guy didn’t know the meaning of fun. Even his hair was white, devoid of any colour.
Sora was adaptable. If one best friend couldn’t answer the call, the other would. Turning to his right, Sora gave his biggest puppy eyes to Kairi. He should have done this from the start—she was his usual partner-in-crime, after all. “You’re bored too, right, Kairi?”
And while every other time she slacked off with him immediately, this time she sadly shook her head. “Sorry, Sora.” She groaned, burying her head in her hands. “I’m seriously going to fail calculus. And Mom said if I get anything less than a 60 in the midterms, she was going to take back my car.”
“And that’s why you’re studying now, so you don’t fail,” Riku finally responded, looking up. He gave her a sympathetic nod. “I’ll help.”
“Thanks.” She smiled at him gratefully. “I can’t believe I’m so bad at this. I was great at math in high school. How is this,” she gestured at the textbook in front of her, “so much harder?”
“It’s university.” Sora shrugged, idly picking up his notes and flipping through them. They were mostly doodles and thus utterly useless. He’d have to steal Riku’s later. “Isn’t it supposed to be harder?”
“And aren’t you supposed to study more?” Riku retorted, his tone disdainful. He plucked one of Sora’s notes before he could react, rolling his eyes as he saw the stick figures. “Seriously, Sora, you’re going to fail if you don’t study.”
“I study enough,” Sora argued, crossing his arms. They’d had this same argument since high school. He was certain they’d have this same argument when he was 80, though he wasn’t sure what for. Sora would be ‘too lazy’ and Riku would be ‘perfect’ and one of these days, Sora would actually win the argument. Maybe that would also happen when he was 80. “We’ve been studying all day, we can take a little break.”
“The test is in two days.” Riku looked at him incredulously. Reaching forward, he tapped on the book in front of Sora. “You haven’t made it past the first chapter.”
“It’s a hard chapter!” Sora defended himself, yanking the book out of reach. “And I haven’t been sleeping well, so you know, it’s hard to focus.”
“You haven’t?” Concerned, Kairi leaned closer and inspected his face. Whistling softly, she frowned and squeezed his shoulder. “You have raccoon eyes! What’s wrong?”
“He’s been playing video games again,” Riku snarked immediately, but despite his tone, he was also watching Sora.
“It wasn’t that!” Sora growled. “I had this really weird dream…” He bit his lip, trying to put together the scattered images he’d seen in his sleep. “There was this tall, white castle filled with these white, uh, noodly monsters. And this boy—he kinda looked like me, you know, but also not really. Like, his hair was blonde, and he was sitting on this throne fast asleep.”
“A dream,” Riku stated slowly, giving him a long look. “You’re crying over a nightmare.”
“I’m not crying and it wasn’t just a dream,” Sora mumbled lamely, feeling foolish even as he said that. In the light of day, the dream felt far away. “It was like I was actually there.”
“Vivid dreams are kinda scary,” Kairi agreed, taking his hand gently. She pressed the pads of her fingers against his skin, massaging his palm. “I thought I took the test already and when I woke up, it took me a while to figure out where I was.”
“Want me to hold your hand tonight, Sora?” Riku smirked, condescension dripping in his tone. “Or do you need a nightlight?”
“I’m not a kid!” Sora grumbled, wanting nothing more than to sink into his chair. Maybe it had been only a dream, after all. Sure, it had felt real at the time—the sound of his steps in the white castle, the way the monsters invaded the castle. There had been two other boys there with him, two boys that looked identical, but he could never see their eyes. One was always asleep and the other—every time Sora turned to look at him, he woke up.
But it had only been a dream. He should never have told Riku; he had never let go of anything in his life. Sora would hear about this until they were 80 too.
Maybe he should think about getting a new best friend.
Sensing his glumness, Kairi suggested brightly, “Hey, why don’t we get some snacks? We have been working a long time. A little cake and coffee wouldn’t hurt anyone.”
“Didn’t you get a cavity recently?” Riku pointed out, raising a brow. “And you want cake?”
“It goes well with coffee.” She smiled disarmingly, and Sora felt a pang of envy. Kairi was so good at convincing Riku to agree; he could only do it when they argued. Well, that was why they worked together, but he wanted to get better at tricking him.
“And I’m hungry,” Sora added, moaning softly as he rubbed his belly. “Brains need sugar, right?”
“Is that the only thing you picked up from biology? And you’re always hungry, idiot.” Riku rolled his eyes, not convinced. He also wasn’t saying no either, so it would only take one more push.
“I’ll grab the cake, Sora gets the coffee, and you can guard the books.” Kairi patted the table. “And we’ll be back in like, twenty minutes, and then we can study.”
Riku snorted, shooting them a look of disbelief. “You’re just going to goof off.”
“I never goof off.” Sora clutched his chest dramatically, mortally wounded. “You just don’t know what fun is.”
Before Riku could argue, Kairi batted her eyes and smiled innocently. “I said no to Sora earlier, remember. We won’t go anywhere else, just there and back.”
“Please,” Sora pleaded and they both gave him identical puppy eyes.
Riku frowned. Brow furrowed and utterly doubtful, he looked from one to the other before sighing. “Fine. Fifteen minutes.”
“Perfect!” Kairi hooked an arm through Sora’s. “We’ll be back soon.”
And then she promptly dragged Sora out of the library. Sensing some sort of scheme, he kept quiet until they were safely away from prying eyes. “So?”
“So we get coffee and cake.” Kairi let go and shrugged. “You go to Starbucks, I’ll go to that cute bakery I’ve been dying to try.”
Sora stared at her, not buying it. “Starbucks?”
“Yes, the one that’s at the corner of Twilight and Destiny.” Kairi smiled angelically.
He wasn’t fooled in the least. “There’s a closer one.”
“Yes but…” she trailed off purposely, leaning forward. When he obliged and leaned closer to her, she whispered, “There’s a guy there that looks just like you. It’s really freaky.”
“Seriously?” Sora gaped, unable to imagine it. A guy who looked just like him—for a moment, he remembered his dreams, that aching familiarity of it all, but that was silly. It had only been a dream. “Why didn’t we go earlier?”
“Because it took me forever to figure out his shift! I only bumped into him randomly, when you weren’t there.” Kairi shrugged. “You’re bored anyways, right? I’m doing you a favour, really.”
Somehow, he doubted that.

A white castle stood, surrounded by darkness. No, not darkness—from the parapets, Roxas could see tiny pricks of light against the black. It was a mass of shadow monsters, of Heartless, and they threatened to overrun the castle gates at any moment.
“We have to go!”
Someone grabbed his hand. In the gloom, Roxas could barely make out the stranger’s brown hair. He knew this person. There was an aching familiarity to it all.
“We have to save Ventus.”
He didn’t know that name. He did know that name. Somehow, both facts were true at the same time. An image flashed across his mind, of a white throne and a boy identical to him sitting on it. The boy was asleep, surrounded by a mass of white monsters.
“We have to—”
Roxas stared at the ceiling. At a bare minimum, he’d hoped to wake up less tired than yesterday, but that was asking for the impossible, apparently. No, instead he had to have yet another strange dream. He held up his hand, staring at it. It was strange; it had felt so real. Even now, he could feel that other person’s hand in his own.
Yet, it had only been a dream.
“Roxas! You’re going to be late!” Aqua yelled. The scent of burnt toast wafted into his room, even though the kitchen was on the opposite side of the house. How she managed to do that every morning, he didn’t know.
“What time is it?” he groaned, rolling over. He stared at his wall, covered end-to-end with his drawings. He’d sketched the castle and Ventus so many times, but he could never find the real-life place that must have inspired the dreams.
“Nine,” Aqua shouted back. “Do you ever set an alarm?”
“I turn it—” Roxas froze. Nine. He only had an hour to get to work. Scrambling out of bed, he ran to the bathroom. “Why didn’t you say anything earlier?”
He was skating on thin ice as it was with his manager. If he was late yet another day—he shuddered to think about it. It was hard enough paying for college on his own; his part-time job just barely helped them make ends meet. While his friend Namine shared a shift with him today, she was a terrible liar and any cover story she gave would be torn apart in minutes.
Jumping down the stairs, he dashed into the kitchen. There, his adoptive sister was calmly sitting at the table, munching on black toast as she watched him. Slyly, she reached out and ruffled his hair. “You’re a mess.”
“Hey!” He swatted her hand away and stepped back. Glaring at her, he smoothened his hair. “You know how long that took!”
“Maybe you should wake up earlier?” Aqua took another bite and gestured at the second plate she’d set up for him. It was relieving to see that it didn’t look half as charcoaled as hers. “Like, if you actually went to sleep at night, you’d wake up with your alarm.”
“I know, I know, it’s just…” Roxas rubbed his arm, not sure how to explain it. There was just this energy in him at night, something that felt almost magical. There was a reason he’d always done his homework and art in the middle of the night but saying it as an adult felt silly. “I’m just…more awake at night.”
“That’s because your sleep cycle is ruined.” Aqua frowned, noticing his eyes. “Did you have another one of those nightmares?”
“Yeah. It’s the same as last time.” Roxas shrugged, not wanting to get into it. It wasn’t like talking about it could change things.
“You’ve been having it for years, maybe we should get someone to look into it.” Aqua sighed, reaching over to squeeze his shoulder affectionately. “But we’ll talk about that later—you’re running late.”
Roxas swore.

Sora stood in front of the Starbucks counter, staring at the cashier. He smiled back awkwardly. “What would you like to order?”
First point, Sora was never that nervous or awkward around anyone. So it couldn’t be personality that made Kairi say they looked the same. It couldn’t be looks either—the cashier was blonde and Sora was a brunette. Did Kairi become colour-blind when he wasn’t looking? Their eyes were kinda similar, maybe, but that’s just because they were both blue.
“Um, are you going to order?” the cashier asked again, looking extremely uncomfortable.
Well, at least no one else was in the store to complain if he didn’t. Sora glanced at his name tag. Roxas. That didn’t even sound like his name! All they had were some of the same letters. “Is there another cashier?”
Roxas’s brow furrowed for a moment before he gave a carefully blank expression. “Namine isn’t on right now, but she’s not interested—”
“Whoa!” Sora held up his hands immediately and shook his head. “I w-w-wasn’t asking for a date.” Ok, maybe he did get nervous sometimes. Clearing his throat, he clarified, “I mean, do you have a cashier that looks like me?”
Roxas looked even more confused, if possible, and he slowly shook his head. “No.”
“And you’re the only one working now?”
“Yes.” Now Roxas was looking at him as if he’d grown two heads and Sora couldn’t blame him. Honestly, this all sounded really crazy. “Are you going to order?”
Sora sighed. Kairi must have pranked him. When he got back, it was revenge time. “Can I get—”
What happened next could only be described as magic. Above the counter, a glowing circle appeared, looking like a sci-fi hologram. The wind picked up—they were inside a building, how could wind pick up?—and napkins and paper cups swirled around them. It was like standing in the eye of a storm.
Suddenly, two figures fell out of the circle, crashing on the counter hard. And just like that, it was over. The Starbucks goods fell to the ground. The wind stopped. The two strangers stayed.
“WHA—?” he yelped, stumbling backwards.
“Gosh, Donald, do you think we got to the right place?” One of the prone figures slowly got up, looking around.
“Of course we did, I’m never wrong,” the other snapped back, rubbing his head after rolling off the counter.
Sora rubbed his eyes. It didn’t change anything. In front of him stood a giant, humanoid dog and a short, angry duck. They spoke English. He glanced at Roxas, who looked as dumbfounded as he did. “Do you see…” he trailed off, gesturing at the creatures.
Roxas pinched his cheek before nodding. “Yeah.”
Standing now, the fully clothed dog-man pounced on Sora before he could react. “Gosh, Sora, you’re so big now!” He turned to Roxas and started to sniffle. “You too, Roxas.”
“Of course they’re big, it’s been years!” the duck angrily quacked. He was only wearing a shirt. Did that make him half-naked? Sora wasn’t sure if he wanted to follow that thought. “And quit crying, we don’t have time for that.”
“We always have time for hugs, Donald,” the dog argued, letting go of Sora and chasing after Roxas. For something that big and clumsy looking, he was surprisingly fast and almost fell on Roxas in his attempt to hug him.
“No, we don’t!” Angry, Donald the duck marched over to Sora and grabbed his hand. Donald had hands. Not wings, hands.
Sora wondered if he’d just fallen asleep at the library and the last fifteen minutes were a dream.
Still embracing Roxas tightly, the dog waddled toward them. “We do! Times infinity!”
“Goofy, I am going to—” Donald took a deep breath and shook his head. “No more distractions! We need to get to Castle Oblivion.”
“Castle Oblivion?” Sora shook himself out of his stupor. Why did that sound so familiar? The image of a white castle flashed before his eyes. His dream. His recurring, realistic dream.
“Your home! Ventus is waiting for you guys!” Goofy chimed in, letting go of Roxas. Unintentionally, the four of them now stood in a circle now.
“Ventus?” Roxas repeated, looking utterly shocked. “But…that’s a dream?”
“A dream?” It couldn’t be, could it?
“You can’t have forgotten Ventus.” Goofy looked despondent as he grabbed Roxas’s and Sora’s hands. “You’re triplets, you can’t forget family.”
“TRIPLETS?” Sora and Roxas shouted at the same time.
Before they could get any answers, another white circle appeared above them. The wind picked up. The last thought that Sora had before he disappeared was Riku’s going to kill me.

Nailed It! Thai BL edition
The main host is Mark. Because Mark has basically already hosted his own game show and there is absolutely no way he would turn down a chance to watch people fail at baking and making commentary.
The expert host is, of course, our darling Pharm. He gives very good advice and is maybe a little too nice? But he tries his best. Lots of hiding his laughter accompanied by wincing when the contestants make a particularly bad mistake. Constantly being reminded that no, he can’t go help them.
Now, there’s always a different guest judge. And this is hard because it could be anyone. But Mark is the host. So he drags Kit on. Like, pretty literally. Physically drags Kit onto the show for every first episode. Kit grumbles the entire time but provides the BEST snark so they just keep letting Mark drag him on.
The first contestant is Can. Because... man, the boy WANTS to bake. He wants to make sweet treats for all his friends and family. But, as his video shows, he cannot make anything. He can’t even come close. Most of his interview is him calling himself stupid and Tin, patiently off-camera, scolding him for it.
The second contestant is Team. He only agreed to this because Pharm is hosting and Win is working behind the scenes and this is his newest challenge to himself. He hates it. But he also wants to impress Win and learn from Pharm, so fine. His interview video involves potato chips being dunked in frosting.
The third contestant is Kongpob. He’s determined to do this as a surprise to Arthrit so he can prove that he can handle helping in the kitchen as well. It’s not even to win. Just to prove that he can be allowed to help out on cooking, since Arthrit is still convinced he’ll burn anything he touches. Arthrit is not wrong.
The first part is making a cupcake based on their bed at home. They sent in pictures of their sheets and pillows and the cupcakes are meant to look exactly like the head of the bed, including the headboard, pillow and blankets.
Team wins the golden cap. He’s the only one who didn’t burn the cupcake. Can gets the button because his cupcake managed to be both burnt and raw at the same time. Kongpob is right in the middle because he cooked the cupcakes but also burnt them pretty badly.
More interviews and Can is handling being the worst the way he always does: calls himself stupid but then shrugs because he just knows he is stupid. Team is absolutely shocked, has no idea what to do with himself and contemplates just leaving. Kongpob is totally okay with this. This part doesn’t really matter, does it?
The second challenge, the BIG part. It’s a cake that looks like the staircase at the college and has an engineering student, in the smock, pinning another uniformed student against the wall in the middle of the stairs. There are decorations up all over the walls next to the stairs and there are lots of little posters advertising various BLs in the decorations.
Kongpob wins this one. His cake isn’t the best, but his decorations are the best because he gets really into the details. Team is a close second because his cake was actually good but his decorations just weren’t there and everything kind of fell apart. Poor Can’s cake was burnt and his decorations were rushed and sloppy because he got distracted and unfocused thanks to stress.
(Honestly, if y’all send me four BL characters, I am perfectly willing to do this again and again.)

Isn't interesting that KC was noticeably absent during SDCC? If the upcoming redemption for BS and vengeance for Quentin aren't something talked about at sdcc, could it be that BS/LL 2.0 aren't going to be relevant storylines going forward?? Or is it just wishful thinking that KC might be leaving the show, 2 years since her character was killed off?
Anon asked: Hello Jen just saw the s7 sizzle reel and confused and a bit annoyed that the writers are dragging along another season with BS. It seems she is still pretending to be LL and in what seems to be 1summer has gotten a law degree. So how do you think this redemption arc is going to work? BS is seeking absolution as someone else? Makes no sense. The one character that connects her to the narrative is dead, now she’s seeking vengeance for QL. How they twist the plot to fit BS? What’s ur take on this?
Anon asked: Hello Jen - Big fan of your blog and all your insights. I just read that they’re bring back KC as a regular next season. Why is it harder to get rid of L*rel/not L*rel from Arrow than getting gum off one’s shoe? I still love Olicity but after the loss of Thea and Lance, I’m definitely not too excited for next season. Your thoughts?
Uhhh… when was the last time KC’s character was relevant? When she died?
I don’t know the reason for KC’s absence, something about family commitments. I don’t think it’s a tip off that she’s leaving the show like it was at SDCC 2015. The lack of discussion around her character says to me she’ll have as much relevancy as she’s ever had, which ain’t much.
If the season theme is redemption then I’m sure BS will be trying to redeem herself to honor Quentin’s sacrifice (still so much ridiculousness). Quentin died for BS because he wanted to die for his L*urel, but couldn’t.
What the man really needed was copious amounts of therapy, but what’s done is done. Arrow killed off the one character BS shared the most screen time with so I anticipate she’ll be playing a smaller role because of it. I’ve been wrong before, but time will tell.
Do I think it makes sense for BS to stick around and pretend to be LL? No. Quentin was her last “familial” connection in Star City and it was tenuous at best. I’d prefer to see BS on Legends and watch Sara grapple with the woman who wears her sister’s face, but is nothing like her. I’m sure I’m in the minority though.
I think the BS redemption will be a cycle of ups and downs. Sometimes she’ll be the better person and sometimes she won’t. The only real interesting element to the character is that she is evil - that she’s not Laurel.
So, I think it would be a mistake for the show to ignore that completely and I don’t believe they will. From my perspective BS is the new Malcolm Merlyn. Merlyn always promised he changed, and every so often even did the right thing, but more often the character was working an angle that benefited him. And Oliver Queen never trusted Malcolm Merlyn.
Beth did say a little something about Bl*ck S*ren’s storyline at SDCC:
“The demise of her father’s Earth-1 counterpart is a huge story point moving forward. She will try to live up to the L*urel L*nce legacy to make him proud. But her alter ego, Bl*ck S*ren, has her craving vengeance.”
Source: @legends-of-today
The real question for me is where does BS start the season? If she’s been on the straight and narrow for the last five months, pretending to be LL, then she’s starting out high. The pendulum will swing the other way. So, her arc could be trying to be a better person, but ultimately failing by season’s end. Just because the season’s theme is redemption doesn’t mean everyone will achieve it. This would be the more interesting route to me because it keeps the evil angle in play.
Look at it this way - what happens if Arrow fully redeems Bl*ck Sir*n? Her character arc is over the same way LL’s was over once she became Bl*ck C*nary. The writers are right back where they started, which is why they killed her off in the first place.
So, this redemptive tug of war is one of the few storylines that keeps Bl*ck Sir*n interesting. Possibly.
Quite frankly, I was woefully disappointed in her character arc in S6. We started off with a bang in Season 5, but ended in a whimper. The writers relegated a powerful meta human to a damsel in distress. Bl*ck Sir*n was a ping pong ball Lance and Diaz batted between them. It was bizarre.
And let’s keep in mind Bl*ck Sir*n’s need for revenge is a primary reason Diaz is free. She screwed up Oliver’s plan something big, so now his family is in witness protection while he sits in prison absolutely powerless to protect them.
BS isn’t winning any popularity contests with Team Arrow, no matter how many law books she crams or nice suits she wears. She’s an uncontrollable element, an X factor. That’s the only way she adds drama to the show. Remove that and there’s not much else.
Also, if you are expecting her ability to practice law to make sense may I remind you the writers thought LL was ready to fight crime after a couple boxing lessons. After they completely erased LL’s self defense classes, of course. Don’t try to make sense of it. Logic doesn’t apply to any version of this character.
Of course, my investment in Bl*ck Sir*n is biased because I am thoroughly apathetic about the character, just like I was with LL by the end. I own that. But let’s address what the LL fans really want. They want Bl*ck S*ren to be redeemed and become LL 2.0, take back the mantle of Bl*ck C*nary, and be in a romantic relationship with Oliver.
1) Bl*ck S*renwill never be L*urel L*nce because she is a different character.
She comes from a different world with an entirely different life experience. I’m not just saying this because it’s a LL doppelganger. If another Roy from a different earth arrives in Star City would we say that’s our Roy? OF COURSE NOT. Our Roy is off living his happily ever after with Thea wiping out Lazarus Pits. Is Nazis Oliver the same as our Oliver? NOOOOO!
BS is a different character because it’s a different character. Anyone who cannot accept that can’t accept logic.
2) Bl*ck S*ren will never be Bl*ck C&nary because Arrow already has a new Bl*ck C*nary (Dinah Drake). PIPE DREAM.
3) Forget all that for a second. Let’s say Bl*ck S*ren becomes this unattainable 2.0 version of LL as KC fans desire. Let’s say she takes back the Bl*ck C*nary mantle. Oliver Queen wouldn’t touch BS with a ten foot pole. He wouldn’t touch L*urel with a ten foot pole by the time she died.
That’s just fact. If you need additional reassurance then the writers have said many times Bl*ck S*renand Oliver Queen are never going to happen. Oliver’s endgame is and will always be Felicity Smoak.
So what’s the real impact to a BS redemption story? Not much. It’s the same equivalent of giving L*urel the motorcycle or whatever other crumbs they tossed her fans. Give it to them. Or don’t. It doesn’t really matter either way.
Arrow killing off L*urel was one of their ballsier moves, and yes it’s disappointing to see them circumvent it with this doppelganger nonsense. It lessens the impact of death which was one of the many reasons they killed LL. They needed to raise the stakes for the superheroes and show the audience they can die.
Do I think Arrow will kill off KC’s character again? No. I don’t. The writers say they have new ways to utilize the actress with this different character. I think that’s partially true. I also think KC has nine lives and a hell of a team of lawyers.
But the truth is she will never be the female lead again.
BS will continue to be a supporting character like the newbies. And, like the newbies, function best in a B (or C) storyline that ultimately supports the leads - Oliver, Felicity and Diggle.
I know there are many who are frustrated BS is still around. I know any version of this character drives you up the wall. If there are those who enjoy the character then great! For those who don’t, you can always fast forward. But her impact is null and void for me. Would it be better if her screen time went to other characters? Absolutely, but I’m not wasting my energy stressing about it. My apathy is a peaceful place.
The upside for me is the writers are never shy about directing snark at BS, which gives me a free pass to be equally as snarky in my reviews. And that’s nifty.

A Run Down of the Faction Dynamics in Mayview
Paranatural has a complex political landscape despite the humor and cartoony style. Let’s see if we can organize it all out. I will update this and reblog it as new information comes out. This is really fuckin long so let’s put a lil Keep Reading there. Also, this also covers some interpersonal relationships. I hope this is lucid enough- let me know if the Activity Club paragraphs are too difficult to read, I’ll figure something out, hopefully.
The Activity Consortium
Named Members: Boss Leader (Leader), Agent Walker, Richard Spender, Agent Day, Mina Zarei(?), The Doctors Burger
Unnamed: Manlizard, Gangster Lady, Day’s Mentor, the two spectral guarding the ghost train
Affiliations: Maxwell Puckett, Zarei’s Faction
Alliances: Cousinhood of Man (Temporary), Activity Club, Zarei’s Faction, Guerra’s Dojo
Enemies: Cousinhood of Man (At least disliked), Angel’s Faction (Currently Unknown)
Overview: A large organization of spectral run by the enigmatic Boss Leader, true identity unknown, who united them all with her spirit’s dream powers. It works to keep spirits under control and from causing damage on a worldwide scale. Suspicious of Mayview and of Spender- possibly of Zarei as well. Thinks the Cousinhood of Man is “like, really super icky” and “dangerous”, but is investigating Mayview to satisfy them. Keeps Isaac in the dark, describes this as “unfortunate”. Attempted to recruit Max as a spy against Spender. Spender says that the person who created the barrier is an old colleague of his, but it’s unknown whether that colleague was part of the Consortium. They have sent Agent Day, pupil of Agent Walker (not her first mentor), to investigate all of Mayview’s mysteries.
The Activity Club
Named Members: Richard Spender (Leader), Isabel Guerra, Edward Burger, Isaac O’Connor, Maxwell Puckett
Alliances: Varies from member to member. Activity Consortium is official. Dmitri Danger (Previous Member)
Overview: Honestly, I barely count the Club as a faction. Each member has their own set of complex relations with each other and the others around them, and they don’t seem to function as a cohesive unit at all. They have a couch in their club room, though it’s not allowed, and have tapped school security. Each member seems to count as their own faction, and this will be represented by a bulleted list. Spender created it- and if you believe Lucifer, it was out of loneliness.
Max- Max seems to have no faith in, trust for, or respect for Spender, and will not act loyally towards him. -- While Max is technically a member of the Activity Consortium, he does not follow their orders and doesn’t seem to consider himself a part, despite having his own room, but also has complied with BL’s request to keep their meeting and his membership a secret from Spender and Isaac- though he has not trusted any of the other members with it either. Affliliation. -- Max seems to have the closest positive relationship with Isabel after the events of chapter four, but all relationships are still new with him. Alliance. -- Max’s most complex relationship among the club is with Isaac- despite having interacted the most frequently, Isaac seemed to make Max uncomfortable at the beginning, frequently snarking. (This has been recognized as a defense mechanism by Isaac- “Max scared. Max lash out. Max words.”) However, Max seemed to grow more comfortable with Isaac over time- they’re currently in the middle of a spat, though Max has shown a want to be friends with Isaac and has reached out to him. Max joined the Club on Isaac’s behest. Also seems protective of Isaac and very in-tune with his emotions. Alliance. -- Max doesn’t seem to have any relationship with Ed, as they’ve barely interacted. Affiliation. -- While Max’s relationship with Johnny got out to a rocky start, he seems to have befriended the bully and earned his respect, and seems to be very fond of Johnny- this will be considered an Alliance. -- Maxwell is being hunted by Suzy for not joining the Journalism Club, and is still possibly being sought as a member. He has been blackmailed by her and doesn’t seem to like her whatsoever- this dislike also seems to extend to Collin, making the J Club overall an Enemy. -- Max seems to get along with Dmitri well enough, due to his more chilled out personality compared to a lot of the other Mayview students. However, Max also doesn’t seem to have much of an opinion on him. Max will work closely with Dmitri, and seems offended to think that Max would reveal Dmitri’s identity as a spectral, making this best categorized as an Affiliation with Dmitri. Max is being blackmailed and controlled by Lisa- he seems freaked out by her and dislikes her charging practices, though he also seems to have a healthy relationship for her and her power. Lisa is an Enemy. -- He’s friendly with Alex, and though he doesn’t trust her, he has apparently extended a hand of friendship, making her a tenuous Ally. -- Max and the Student Council consider themselves Enemies, though the SC seeks his membership. -- Max doesn’t know of the extent of Cody’s membership in the SC, though seems to consider him decent enough while not trusting him whatsoever, making this a likely Affiliation. -- Sam and Damien (”Doghouse”) are Max’s old friends from the “big city” of Baxborough, and though he hasn't informed him of his new status, he wants to see them again and still holds them close to his heart- this is an affiliation, but also a potential alliance if they come into prominence in the story. -- Max seems to know Day fairly well, and it’s theorized that she is the babysitter in his flashback- if so, this is an affiliation. -- Max doesn’t know BERG is possessing him. BERG’s intentions are unknown, so this is an affiliation. -- PJ and Lefty live with Max, and Max has situated himself as one of PJ’s defenders and seems to think of him as a little brother. They are an alliance, though PJ will likely feel incredibly betrayed if Max chooses not to give PJ access to a tool or can’t provide one after building up his hopes. This could possibly cause a break of alliance, despite PJ’s eagerness to help Max out and his assistance through chapter 5.
Isabel- Isabel seems to have grown up with Spender and holds him in high respect, referring to him as an “action hero”. She trusts him implicitly and has his back- this is an alliance. -- Isabel’s best friend within the club is Ed. Though they’re going through a tough time as of chapter five, it seems that Isabel is in the process of forgiving Ed and their friendship is restored- this is an alliance, though one which has been untrustworthy in the past, it seems to be more reliable than ever. -- Max is Isabel’s second best friend within the club, and she seems to be fiercely protective over him now that Eightfold has sacrificed herself for Isabel to save him- alliance. -- Isaac is Isabel’s rockiest friendship, and they seem to argue in their conversations more than anything, especially now that Max is in the picture. While they seem to get along well in calmer moments- “you look like a brooding anti-hero”- this mostly seems to be due to Isabel’s attempts to reach out, and it’s shown that she’s getting fed up with his attitude, and justifiably so. While they can get along and work together, it’s more precarious and they don’t seem to want to be around each other. Isabel is shown to pay a decent amount of attention to Isaac’s interests in an attempt to reach out as well. However, Isabel also seems traumatized by whatever happened to do with isaac in the club and has repressed those feelings- and it seems she feels her emotions on that regard have been neglected as well, by Isaac especially. However, she still considers Isaac a friend. Affiliation. -- Isabel’s relationship with her grandfather has been shown to be very negative, with Francisco holding her to impossibly high standards compared with the rest of his students, especially Ed, and he tends to devalue the things that she likes, including the people that she likes. His cruel view towards spirits has subconsciously rubbed off on her, as pointed out by Eightfold, though it’s more subtle. Guerra’s relationship with her is a very negative, possibly abusive alliance. -- Isabel lives alongside her Grandfather’s students. Though not much is known on that end overall, they’ve never stuck up for her, whether out of fear of her grandfather or not, use her greatest fears against her with no protest, and have been shown to mock her. This is a negative affiliation. -- Eightfold was Isabel’s original spirit partner, and was lost beneath the Earth in chapter four. However, she is not classed as deceased, just lost. Despite Isabel’s upbringing, she and Eightfold had a very positive relationship, considering each other ‘best friends’ and being willing to risk their lives for each other. Though Isabel is only just realizing and overcoming the prejudices she was raised with, she and Eightfold have a very positive alliance. -- Flipflop is Isabel;’s newest spirit, and the ‘replacement’ for Eightfold. While Isabel doesn’t seem too impressed by Flipflop, this is likely due mostly due to her grief for Eightfold. Isabel has been shown to be somewhat encouraging towards Flipflop and their relationship is starting out positive. Alliance. -- Isabel thinks Zarei is creepy, but was helped by her. While Isabel’s opinion started to turn while Hijack was still disguised as Spender, it’s likely reverted now that Hijack’s deception has been revealed. No relation currently, though Zarei wants to build an alliance. *Additional note: we haven’t seen any of Isabel’s social life outside of the AC. It’s possibly being implied that she doesn’t really have friends, merely acquaintances. Though, she is referred to as one of the cool kids by Alex. Also, it’s implied that at least Isabel’s father is still alive and familiar, but her mother is unknown Isabel’s dad and her grandfather do not get along- they “hate” each other, or at least Francisco hates him.
Ed- Ed is the student in the Activity Club we know the least about. He seems to be friends with Jeff, Cody, and Violet, though he’s not as close to them as he is the other members of the Activity Club. Ed is self-described as having “lots of friends”. This can be considered an affiliation. -- Ed seems to get along well with Max, but the most thoughts we’ve seen about Max seem to be of the jealous variety, with Ed not seeming to be considering Max much at all outside of the club. This is an affiliation. -- Ed doesn’t seem close to Isaac, and we haven’t seen much of their interactions. They seem friendly enough. Affiliation. -- Ed seems to trust Spender, though their relationship doesn’t seem to be to the extent of Spender and Isabel’s. Affiliation. -- Isabel is Ed’s closest friend, and they live together with Francisco. They’re shown to be a cohesive team and are very rarely shown apart unless they’re somehow separated, like in chapter four with the split teams, or in the training scenes where Ed isn’t involved. Ed seems to want to be by Isabel’s side whenever he can, even if it’s tactically disadvantageous. He broke Isabel’s trust before, but he has earned it back. Considers himself a Guerra. Strong Alliance. -- Muse is Ed’s spirit. Muse doesn’t seem fond of Ed, though Ed looks up to Muse and asks for advice. Muse is borderline disdainful, and Ed is either ignorant or ignoring that. Despite that, they work together and Muse seems to be invested in Ed’s growth. Alliance. -- Fransisco is raising Ed, likely as a favor to the Consortium after the disappearance of the Doctors Burger. Fransisco seems entirely uninvested in Ed and openly dislikes him, referring to him as the ‘freeloader’ and neglecting Ed’s training, and likely Ed’s wellbeing in general. This is a negative affiliation. -- Ed recently has formed a positive relationship with Johnny and RJ. Johnny confided his thoughts in Ed, and RJ allowed their backstory to be told to him. They worked together and parted on a positive note, despite Ed causing them to get detention. Currently classed as an alliance.
Isaac- While Isaac is resentful and angry towards Spender for his unexplained treatment of Isaac and poor field teaching methods, Isaac also is shown to crave Spender’s attention and praise. Isaac is also frequently dismissed and put down by Spender. Spender seems entirely ignorant towards this and the way Isaac’s emotions have been festering towards him and the team, though Isaac would not betray the team- he longs for their acceptance, and feels that he “broke up the team” and takes responsibility for the rift between them. He feels the entire team, including the responsible adult, mocks him. This is a negative alliance. *Note: this is classified as an alliance due to Isaac’s reliance on Spender for information. While it isn't a relationship of willing help, it’s more than just an affiliation. -- Isaac seems to think Isabel and Ed hate him, though he may have realized due to recent arguments that this is not the case. Regardless, he resents them for this perceived hatred and disdain, and for how they keep him in the dark with Spender. It seems that while he longs for their approval and friendship, he also wants to split off on his own ,a d has expressed that he could “easily destroy them both”, implying that his resentment has been at the place where he put thought into that outcome. His relationship with them is a tense negative affiliation. -- Isaac’s friendship with Max has been rather hot and cold. Isaac seems to see their friendship as one made of favors to be traded around, while also genuinely wanting him and Max to be true friends. He saw Max as his only ally within the Club before their argument, but they seem to be making up and forging a much healthier and more sustainable friendship. Has reached out to Max, and it’s likely a full make up is soon or implied. Due to many factors, I’m classing this as an alliance. -- Isaac’s relationship with King C is iffy. Isaac seems to have a lot of genuine dislike for King C, especially with King C’s encouragement of the qualities Isaac doesn’t like within himself- his overwhelming anger and penchant for violent outbursts- and how he puts down one of the only positive figured we’ve been shown for Isaac, Doorman. However, King C is likely the reason Isaac knows Doorman in the first place. I’m unsure of how to class this one, but my gut says affiliation. -- Doorman is one of the only two more positive figures in Isaac’s life that we’ve been shown, alongside Max. Doorman acts as a mentor figure towards Isaac, and Isaac holds no small amount of loyalty and love for Doorman. Doorman seems to want to “do good by” Isaac, and genuinely cares, though Doorman’s conversations with Isaac can be interpreted as manipulative, depending on the reader. This is a strong alliance, though Isaac is ignorant to Doorman’s faction activities. -- Isaac hasn’t interacted with Zarei much, but he seems to have inklings of respect and interest in her, as she subtly reached out to him in chapter 5. However, this relationship cannot be classed as of yet.
Spender’s Faction
Named Members: Richard Spender (Leader), Lucifer, Mr. Garcia (Possibly an affiliation)
Affiliations: Shadow Spirit, Guerra, Dr. Zarei (Potentially)
Alliances: Zarei’s Faction (Potentially)
Overview: The goals of Spender’s faction is unknown, though it seems to be involved with an incident that happened thirteen years ago when Spender was a child, and protecting the secrets of Mayview. It also has something to do with the shadowy, extremely powerful spirit that possesses Spender. Lucifer is a mentor and ally, and Garcia is Spender’s boyfriend, though it’s unknown how much Garcia is involved- Spender seems to want him staying out of Spectral business. While Spender is rejecting Zarei’s help, Lucifer is attempting to engineer an alliance using Hijack as an ambassador. Spender also confides in his former mentor and teacher, Francisco, though Francisco holds no loyalty towards Spender and Lucifer views the trust Spender’s put in the old man as extremely ill advised. Spender believes he is working for the greater good, but fears that he’ll accidentally stray to evil. However, he seems to wander a lot- Lucifer spells this out clearly. Lucifer apparently saved Spender from drowning thirteen years ago- or as he puts it, “pulled out of that lake”. Spender says that the person who created the barrier is an old colleague of his, but it’s unknown whether that colleague was part of the Consortium. Spender believes the barrier is very necessary, though it’s unknown if it’s keeping something out or in. Spender and his own know of something horrible that happened in Mayview thirteen years ago involving as of yet unexplained supernatural phenomena, and know it will happen again- Spender is working to either prevent it or to make sure Mayview survives it. To “save” Mayview. Seems to have some sort of petty grudge against Zarei, who used to be a close friend and ally. Lucifer seems hopeless about the situation and believes them all doomed, as if he knows or has realized something Spender doesn’t, hasn’t, or refuses to acknowledge.
Angel’s Faction
Named Members: Doorman, King C, Nin
Unnamed Members: The Ninja Bunnies, The Angel (Leader)
Affiliations: Forge, Isaac O’Connor
Enemies: BERG’s Faction, Activity Consortium/Spender’s Faction, The Cult
Overview: The Angel’s goals and motivations are unknown. She seems to be viewed as some great good by the spirits associated with her. She seems to want a good deal of power inside Mayview, and a way in and out, having brought in King C, Forge, and others besides them- King C is referred to as a “storm god”, and the bunnies make reference to a “sorcerer”. Forge was being brought in as a mercenary, hoping the Angel can give him what he wants. Doorman seems to view BERG as an enemy that should not be either in Mayview or in this world at all, and seems genuinely frightened of them. Though it’s implied that most of the imported spirits have been taken down by Spender, and this within Mayview view him as a renowned enemy, Spender doesn’t seem to know of their presence, and it’s unknown if the Consortium is their enemy, if Spender is a genuine enemy, or if they’re just troublesome obstacles. They seem at odds with the Cult, as they don’t want the vile spirits around them. It’s possible that the Angel doesn't feel fear, as suggested by BERG’s dialogue. They consider themselves the good guys. Angel is supposedly an angel of life and beauty. However, Angel’s faction also doesn’t seem too positive on humans. *Note: King C’s presence in Isaac seems to be the reason Isaac is being kept in the dark. As King C can see and hear whatever Isaac doesn't, the only way to keep important information about the Consortium from leaking is to keep Isaac in the dark. This is what BL means by saying that Isaac’s situation is “unfortunate”. This is also why I’ve placed Angel and the Consortium as enemies.
Davy’s Faction
Named Members: Davy Jones (Leader)
Affiliations: Cody Jones, Lisa (Possibly), Lefty (Possibly), PJ (possibly)
Alliances: Student Council (In a way)
Enemies: The Witch, Cousinhood of Man
Overview: Davy is a vampire, and a former spectral. He claims to keep some sort of peace in Mayview, though that doesn’t seem to involve spirits, implying that he keeps it peaceful in relation to something else. Cody Jones is his son, and their relationship seems somewhat tense in the scenes we’ve seen. It’s theorized that Davy and PJ are related in some way, and that Lefty is the ghost of Davy’s missing hand. PJ seems somewhat old fashioned, and he possibly died a while ago- time is unconfirmed. Lefty also has grey energy, like Davy. It’s also theorized that Lisa is related to Davy, possibly as Lisa’s sister. He references a witch that he wishes to keep power from, and as he and Cody are monsters, they want to avoid the attention of the Cousinhood of Man. Davy and Cody must follow vampire rules, though it is unknown which ones Cody has to follow. It is confirmed that Cody must follow any of Davy’s orders. Monsters, regardless of type, are known as “corrupted humans”. Davy apparently owns a local business and possibly provides the school with funding. Davy claims the entire town as “his”- though it’s unclear in exactly what fashion he views it as belonging to him- likely economically in some way due to dialogue, but it definitely has to do with how he “keeps the peace” for Cody. Davy also may have some psychic connection to Cody, as he claims he came to the school after feeling Cody’s heart beat quickly.
The Student Council
Named Members: Cody Jones (Leader), the 12 Black Saint Councilor-Guardians (all currency unnamed), The Six Dozen Black Saint Sub-Councilor Lieutenant Generals, Serge
Unnamed Members: the two members with faces, unnamed unclear silhouettes on CH5P288
Affiliations: Principal, Vice Principal
Alliances: The Witch (Possibly), Journalism Club
Enemies: Lisa’s Rebellion, Journalism Club
Overview: While it used to be a normal student council, after the “secret ballot” election and the rise of Cody Jones to Council President, it has become a militant organization that passes “COLLIN QUOTE” and exploits the council’s powers. While under the influence of the Principal, she has no real power. The Vice Principal, who seems to be the Witch, is aligned with the SC and works with them frequently to take down troublemakers and to fill detention with students. Cody’s motivations on this are unclear. It’s unclear whether the school counts as Cody’s territory or the Witch’s, though it seems to act as Cody’s territory when it comes to vampire rules. It’s notable that if the VP is indeed the Witch, then Cody seems to work with her while his father works against her to keep her from gaining any more power. Lisa’s Rebellion is in direct opposition to the SC’s iron grip on the school, and while the J Club seems to be attempting to find out the SC’s secrets, if Collin’s Comments are anything to go by, the SC also seems to use the J Club as a trusted source of information and allows them to exist. The student council seems to be gearing up for some kind of massive power struggle within the school, and it’s mentioned very ominously- very likely to come into serious play later. *Note: It’s possible Cody doesn’t have as much power as its theorized he does. While he may technically have control, quotes such as “You forfeit all your power when you don’t act the way they want you to” and “Point me in the right direction... that’s all I’m good for” suggest that, unless Cody’s acting and lying in those panels, he might be under the thumb of another being- possibly the Vice Principal/Witch. However, he does also say that he will “find a way to handle things myself if (the AC’s actions) proves insufficient” also seem to contradict those- unless Cody’s talking about risking it all for Jeff. This might also have something to do with Jeff getting out early from detention of good behavior- Cody pulling some strings.
Lisa’s Rebellion
Named Members: Lisa (Leader), Ollie Oop, Maxwell Puckett (reluctantly)
Unnamed Members: Bully silhouettes shown behind her in her rebellion intro
Affiliations: Violet
Alliances: Jang (possibly)
Enemies: Student Council, Journalism Club
Overview: Lisa leads the rebellion against the SC, and most of her members are wrangled bullies. The hub is the saloon-like student store, where Lisa works as barkeep and employs Ollie as a guard to keep the SC out. Notably, Cody seems allowed in despite his SC membership. There seems to be a bit of bad blood between Lisa and the Journalism Club, due to Suzy making popular knowledge of the secrets Lisa gives her. Lisa, while making drinks and leading the rebellion, also works as an information broker and knows almost everything about the school. It is unknown if, and how much, Lisa knows about the supernatural goings-on of Mayview. She seems to know that there are powerful, scary people in the school. She does not seem to know that Cody is the SC president. She is currently blackmailing Max, and it is unknown what she will use her influence over him to do- she has mentioned using him for debt collection. Violet is a personal friend of Lisa’s and drinks for free.
The Cousinhood of Man
Named Members: None
Alliances: Activity Consortium (Temporary)
Enemies: Activity Consortium (At least disliked), Davey’s Faction
Overview: The Cousinhood of Man is an organization of monster hunters. Not much is known about them, other than this and the fact that the Consortium strongly dislikes them. They currently want in to Mayview, as they (correctly) suspect there is a monster (though they’re wrong on this count- there are multiple) inside. Referred to by Spender as “frenzied vigilantes”. Possibly wear uniform trenchcoats. Apparently, the monster population is dwindling. The barrier around Mayview is apparently supposed to keep monsters from crossing, as well as Cousinhood operatives. They also apparently used to be quite troublesome in Consortium affairs.
The Evil Cult
Named Members: None
Affiliations: Pixelhounds/Vile Spirits
Enemies: Angel’s Faction, Consortium
Overview: Almost nothing is known about these cultists. They follow someone who must be “the most evil being around”, as this being can command the vile spirits. The vile spirits are inside the barrier, though it seemed they were trying to escape Mayview in chapter four. Their motivation is unknown. Interestingly, they are shown in Dad Puckett’s imagination at the beginning of chapter 3- possibly implying a connection, as Mayview is dad puckett’s hometown. He calls them “death cultists”. They actively work against Doorman gaining any strong spirits at his side, and see fit to attempt to turn Doorman and Spender against each other.
BERG’s Faction
Named Members: None
Unnamed Members: BERG
Affiliations: Maxwell Puckett
Enemies: Angel’s Faction
Overview: The least is known about BERG’s faction, as BERG is the character we arguably have the least information about. BERG is referred to as a broken riddle god by Doorman, who fears them, and BERG seems to think this fear is justified- and that the Angel should fear them too. BERG is in a certain faction and seems to be associated with pyramids and the desert. BERG is humorless and currently possessing Max, though Max is unaware of this. BERG has some sort of title that begins with an ‘s’.
Zarei’s Faction
Named Members: Mina Zarei (leader), Hijack (Deceased?), Hotwire, Thirteen (Deceased), Patchworm, the Ghost Train, Toolbox
Unnamed Members: King Doctopus, an emotion controlling big millipede spirit,
Affiliations: Richard Spender, Activity Consortium
Alliances: Spender’s Faction (Seeking)
Overview: The reason for Zarei’s disloyalty towards the Consortium is unknown. She is a spectral, spirit, and ghost doctor, and has the ability to create spirits. She currently lives with her parents while she’s trapped in Mayview. She seems to worry for Spender, and seeks to align herself with him, hinting that she may know more about Mayview than she lets on, or distrusts the Consortium for some reason. She may know something about the disappearance of the Doctors Burger. She appears to be well known within the Consortium. It has also been revealed that she has a bad past with the Witch, who seems to be the Vice Principal- bad enough that it makes her nervous to even be in the school, and terrified of the VP. She thought that she had previously defeated the VP/WItch, and was unaware of her presence. Something happened between her and Spender, and Spender’s petty grudge keeps them from reclaiming their friendship. Doctor Zarei is somewhat under investigation due to odd behavior such as never sharing the results of her paranatural research with her Consortium colleagues. This research is likely to be her ability to create spirits, which she wants to keep from Boss Leader for unknown reasons. She fears for the safety of her “assets”. Zarei also seems to be known by Ms. Baxter, and a friend fo Baxter’s named ‘Sophie’, and was notable enough to have an email sent out about her return. It’s also likely that the Ghost Train’s lantern was stolen from Zarei by the waitress Penny when they bumped into one another. Agent Day is attempting to use Zarei’s growing crush on her for information, though is possibly worried about developing or worsening current romantic feelings or ideations for Zarei. Zarei also seems to have lost a previous spirit companion in the form of, possessing, or represented by a sock puppet of sorts that was a close loved one and confidant when she was younger.
The Journalism Club
Named Members: Suzy (Leader), Dmitri Danger, Collin Sloinne
Unnamed Members: Faculty Advisor
Affiliations: Lisa’s Rebellion, Student Council
Enemies: Activity Club, Lisa’s Rebellion, Student Council
Overview: Suzy leads the Journalism Club. They have a hands off Teacher patron. The newspaper is largely underfunded and unprofessional- referred to as a pamphlet, and they have no readers. Suzy has been shown to take drastic measures in order to get a story for the pamphlet. Despite the lack of, well, everything but passion, the news seems to be treated by the Council as a reliable source of information. Collin is Suzy’s self-described slave, who seems to be the most normal person in the Club, and the one who’s likely put up with Suzy the longest. Despite his general attitude, he does seem to actually take pride in his work as a reporter and enjoy the Journalism Club. Suzy seems to have a secret that she doesn’t want getting out that Lisa knows, which is implied to be her surname. The Journalism Club apparently also spies on all the other clubs. Suzy also doesn’t believe that the paper needs to tell the truth.
Subtopic: Dmitri Dmitri is the third and final member of the Journalism Club, and a spectral. Dmitri is a former member of the Activity Club, and references to him can be seen hidden through various panels up to his reveal. Dmitri, when he first became a spectral, didn’t have anyone to help him through and apparently “flipped his nuggets”. Dmitri is possessed by a ghost-like spirit called Peekaboo, who he seems to be scared of. It’s implied that something may have happened to make Dmitri very angry at Peekaboo- though the incident might be what led to Dmitri’s apparent fear of Peekaboo as well. It’s unknown whether it’s tied to the incident that’s mentioned to do with Isaac. He doesn't seem to think the AC is that bad, though.
Guerra’s Dojo
Named Members: Francisco Guerra (Leader), Isabel Guerra, Edward Burger
Unnamed Members: Ghost Pupil, Various other pupils
Affiliations: Richard Spender (Previous Pupil), Activity Club, Spender’s Faction (shaky)
Alliances: Activity Consortium
Overview: Fransisco Guerra runs a training dojo on the outskirts of Mayview by the forest, where he trains students for the Activity Consortium and raises his granddaughter and the possible orphan Ed.While he’s retired from the Consortium and no longer has any obligation to them , he still works for them. However, he seems reluctant to take any more students currently. He dislikes and distrusts spirits, and claims that using their powers is weak. He is specialized in the weaponization of spectral energy. He has previously mentored Spender and seems to greatly dislike him, despite keeping his secrets and possibly offering counsel.
The Witch
Named Members: None
Unnamed Members: The Witch
Alliances: Student Council (Possibly)
Enemies: Davey’s Faction, Zarei’s Faction (Possibly), Lisa’s Rebellion (Possibly)
Overview: As of Ch5P---, The witch is implied to be the Vice Principal. She seems to inhabit the school and works closely with the SC to keep order within the school and is very offended by the idea of wearing normal clothes on pajama day. She is implied to be related to a spider, with references to her legs made, and with the school referred to as “the spider’s web”. She seems to have tormented Zarei when she was a young girl, and both Zarei and Davey seem very concerned with her.
The Jang
Named Members: Johnny Jhonny (Leader), Ollie Oop, Stephen, RJ
Affiliations: Forge
Alliances: Max, Ed
Overview: This troupe of bullies consists of the four members, led by Johnny. Johnny isn’t very smart but is known for being very strong and very resilient- Zack once made a reference to Johnny hanging himself up horizontal on a flagpole and acting like a flag. Stephen has a scar that was attained in an unknown way, and is referred to in his character bio as half hyena, though it’s unknown how literally to take that as of this moment. Stephen is known for being a huge conspiracy theorist, and has a tendency to deconstruct social norms. RJ is a silent metal rocker, and Ollie is the son of the gym coach, and the most openly intelligent of the bunch. They all are known as huge bullies, but are also remarkably friendly for bullies, with Johnny giving Max change for a dollar when collecting bullying money. They are very close emotionally and create “friendship fusions” which tend to be rather useless. They have all four seen the Activity Club, Spender, and Day riding the ghost train (aka floating), but they only recognize Max and Ed for sure- they know Isaac as “the orange haired kid”, and Spender as “the sunglasses teacher”. Johnny is possessed by Forge and is becoming a medium due to this, for which Forge feels apologetic- Forge’s intentions with Johnny are unknown, and is currently in the stage of seeing shades in pulses. Forge has been in Mayview before. Johnny has a longing to be Max’s friend, and he and RJ seem fond of Ed. The Jang seems to be the group the least politically connected and are rather ignorant of the goings-on, outside of Ollie being aligned with Lisa.
#paranatural#pnat#HOOOOOOOOO BOY#pnat politic post#this literally took all day + some breaks#and now it's 3 am and i finally finished#fuck me sideways#this ended up being both a politic and interpersonal relationship post so.... yea#god this is so fucking long

Favourite Webcomics So Far
1. Starfighter by HamletMachine
“Set in an undetermined date in the future, a space station houses a starfighter fleet, each ship manned by a fighter and a navigator. Navigator Abel is assigned to the notorious fighter Cain, who kicks off their partnership by permanently scarring Abel to mark him as his property, then threatening him. Forced together by circumstance and military command, Abel does his best to be a professional partner and navigator to loose-cannon Cain, while entering into a brutal, messy relationship with him even as hints arise that Cain is even more dangerous than he appears.”
2. Crushed!! by Yaa

There’s checking.
It’s a story about hockey and friendship and bros and trying to find yourself during the best 4 years of your life.”

10 Favorite Moments of Snark in BL
This one came is as an ask from the lovely @solitaryandwandering and there are tons of options so I just picked some of mine and labeled them top 10. I reserve the right to change my mind if a remember better.
Quite a few of these came from truly terrible BLs, I wonder if that has to do with me remembering them. Like they stood out as moments of delightful charm in a sea of sewage?
1. Just talk!
Ae getting annoyed with TinCan in A Chance At Love.
Of course it’s MAME first, but the idea of her using one of her most popular characters (whom she fucked over) to criticize miscommunication as a narrative driver (which is her fucking calling card) was just the ironic poop version of a chef’s kiss. (Sorry, I don’t know how else to put it.)
2. Saucing out of jealousy
Let’s just get MAME out of the way, shall we? Type (in TharnType) is an absolute banger at the pithy quip in a very agro way and I love a lot of his lines. I mean calling your lover “crybaby” when you finally tell him you love him? Epic snark. Also the “you can finally stop complaining about us” to Techno is so good.
But my personal favorite, hands sown, is the throwing a sauce bottle. Talk about product placement. (Although said senior’s snarky, “It’s fun to see a big baby agitated” about Type, was also pretty darn great.)
3. I’m so gay
In Rainbow Prince, the fact that Art’s focused pursuit is patently obvious and his subordinates are still careful about it was just really funny to me. It reminded me of my youth when friends got surprised when I came out. Don’t get me wrong, my coming out was perfectly serviceable at the time, but also the ones who were surprised I was like...
4. Ate the phonebook
Bright in SOTUS (played by Off) is a wonderfully snarky character. I love the way he is self deprecating about being a bad student, even in front of his juniors, and the time he leads them in prayer? So funny.
But my favorite is his one shot “Did he eat the national register” when Kong is showing off his memory for names in one of the hazing sequences.
Shout out to the one I do have a screen cap of, this from SOTUS S:
Like serious moment of scripted brilliance.
Ah me, back in the days when most Thai BLs had really good scripts....
5. Goodnight, you fucker
Kao’s fandi-way in the Kiss series.
This is a linguistic one. It’s just I already had grocked the notion of fandi na as being a cute thing couples use with each other (kind of like “sweet dreams, please?”) to see Kao make this super rude when Pete is begging him for it, is so much THEM, their dynamic, it’s particularly snarky and on character.
Also, you know me, i had to pick a linguistic one.
6. Rome getting his own back
Rome in Puppy Honey is such a sweet soft character but also so much owning his own identity, and so steady about it. It was just really fun to see him get one up on Pick.
Even if they both know it’s actually a compliment.
Also should out to Porsche’s moment of quip, “I enjoy this scene a little too much” when he catches his bestie rolling around in paint with cute boy.
7. Invitation?
Tian actually has quite a few moments of snark in Tale of a Thousand Stars. (”You know how to sweet talk now?’). But honestly this is a phrase I use constantly IRL so I was just happy to see it show up in a Thai BL.
8. Just alpha bitch bitching it up
Look is this level of confrontation actually considered snark? I don’t know but Miriam’s defense of Chon in Tonhon Chonlatee is epic. Top level. It’s a real pleasure to watch a female bestie take out an evil femme fatale machine-gun style.
Yes there are others, the bffs (best female friends) in Together With Me and Dark Blue Kiss spring to mind.
9. Calling out the industry moments
There are quite a few of these, and a BL that is already bad and full of tropes has to be careful because they are reviewing themselves badly. And yet they do it anyway. This example comes from one of this years worst, My Secret Love:
Our Days has
“Can I love you, my tsundere”
“This year so many Y series came out”
“I think the script writers are at fault”
“Your acting skills suck”
all of which come off as more rich and inappropriate than snark in such a terrible show.
It’s not always bad show tho.
Cherry Blossoms After Winter scene card calling out the “only one bed” trope.
And in on of the Taiwanese BLs there is a moment where a side character tells on of the leads that “tsundere is so out of fashion” but I can’t remember which show.
10. Seme subscription service
Best of the best (IMHO) comes from Korea, who generally specializes in earnest, not snark. But...
Semantic Error is one of my favorite BL’s because the two leads are nearly entirely comprised of snark. SangWoo’s “if my heart wasn’t beating I’d be dead” was perfection, since it also takes a common trope to account.
And when JaeYoung is grouchy and says "No lettuce, eat perilla leaves instead” I bark laughed. Also the “oops my hand slipped” after he shot that dart at the drunk asshole in the pub. Both of these also involve physical comedy moments, so they aren’t strictly just snark they're visual gags but still? *kiss kiss kiss*
But I had to pick seme subscription service as my favorite moment of snark from this series. Because it is both of them, snipping back and forth.
And that’s it. That’s my top 10.
Other good ones?
KinnPorsche Pete has a few the time at the table with the minor family and the time in chains when he’s reading a book.
Most of Team’s responses to Win in Until We Meet Again. from “You’re so picky” to “Don’t even think about it.”
Half of what Pond says in Love By Chance.
All of what Pure says in My Gear and Your Gown.
I don’t love Theory of Love but Third’s internal dialogue (when he’s not whining and pining) and his occasionally take downs are pretty darn great.
Adachi’s internal reactions to Kurosawa’s thoughts in Cherry Magic, especially after they are dating. “Everything is so mushy.”
Akoi’s internal dialogue and self criticism snark in My Love Mix Up.
TangYi’s “too soft” in H3: Trapped.
Noh’s “Fine, yes” at the end of Love Sick. Not a snarky character in general, just a wise and sweet one, but at the end, yes, snark.
NamGoong in Light On Me, the sweetest side character of snark.
Pretty much all of Mob’s thoughts and dialogue in Absolute BL.
This post dated mid 2022, not responsible for snark that came after.

Note
all of them for embla!
I’m skipping questions that aren’t applicable
1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?
Embla Blomqvist. Embla means elm tree, and it’s also the name of the first woman in Norse mythology. It might not have an apparent meaning at the surface, but who knows? Maybe it’ll be significant at some point?
Blomqvist means flower-twig, continuing the plant theme. And with such a strong plant theme in her name, her personality and the fact that she’s a changeling, you’d think she’d be a log changeling, but she is in fact a troll changeling with a somewhat ironic name. Part of why I chose it was because rhytmically, it flows pretty well because of the two ‘bl’-sounds, at least if u ask me
3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory?
Her childhood was… decent. She grew up somewhat detached from people, and not always by choice, but she also didn’t have anything to compare with, so she didn’t actively suffer either. Things got better when she met Berri, tho
4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents?
This is where things get… complicated. Berri kind of acts like a parental figure, but aside from him, the closest thing Embla has to a parent is her adoptive mother who is not ideal. The mother is married to her job and constantly overachieves even though money is not an issue at all, so she usually leaves Embla to her own devices and has done so on a regular basis from a very young age.
Embla never met her biological parents and they are kind of an enigma. It’s hard for even me to pin them down, so let’s just say they’re kind of all over the place morally speaking
6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?
During the events of TFTF, Embla has just graduated 8th grade. Again, she’s not super good unfortunately. She does pick up a lot of facts and trivia, but she’s bad at contextualizing it in a lot of situations, meaning her school performance suffers. Her grades hover around Es and Ds depending on the subject, maybe a few Cs sometimes. Not sure what her fave subject is but she dislikes math and science in particular
7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood?
She doesn’t have a lot of friends but she likes it that way. She’s kind of a loner and people around her respect that without ignoring her (god I wish that were me). But at the beginning of TFTF, she has two close friends in Aminah and Berri, and she befriends more in the Faelands.
8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals?
It probably doesn’t count but with some good will, you can consider Berri to be a pet. She does like animals, dogs in particular.
9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?
It’s a 50/50 thing. Some animals like her, but some are frightened by her.
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/ect?
She’s not super fond of infants, but she definitely likes older kids and she’d probably like to have kids in the future!
12. What is their favourite food?
Okay so under normal circumstances, Embla usually eats very simple foods that somebody her age can easily cook, she is fond of anything fancy since those foods are kinda rare in her life
14. Do they have any specific memories of food/a restaurant/meal?
When Embla first met Tristan, one of the first things he did was offer her a freshly killed rabbit bc well, Tristan’s quirky like that. Embla initially declined but then reluctantly accepted the rabbit
15. Are they good at cooking? Do they enjoy it? What do others think of their cooking?
She’s decent, as I said she cooks on a regular basis. She doesn’t really cook for others, tho
18. What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else
She likes anything that’s engaging honestly, no matter the genre
20. Do they like musicals? Music in general? What do they do when they’re favourite song comes?
If she’s in the mood, yeah? But since she’s rather stoic, she doesn’t do much more than just bob her head to a song she likes
21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper?
She’s p patient, but if she’s pushed enough, her usual reaction involves rambling and yelling
22. What are their favourite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someone’s back?
Embla is p feisty actually! If you annoy her or do something she doesn’t think makes sense, she will make jokes at your expense and snark at u
23. Do they have a good memory? Short term or long term? Are they good with names? Or faces?
Her memory is okay in most ways except faces, she can be awful at faces.
24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?
She’s average I guess, she doesn’t usually remember her dreams, she doesn’t snore and she prefers soft mattresses
25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humour? Are they funny themselves?
She thinks it’s fun to make fun of ppl, not in a malicious way, but when she thinks they need to be taken down a notch. So some think her humor is a lil mean spirited
26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions?
She might hum sometimes, but as I said before, she’s p stoic. Not that she hides emotion, but she just doesn’t show clear signs of emotion all the time
27. What makes them sad? Do they cry regularly? Do they cry openly or hide it? What are they like they are sad?
She’ll usually just stay quiet when she’s particularily sad
28. What is their biggest fear? What in general scares them? How do they act when they’re scared?
She was initially pretty scared of the idea of going to the Faelands because yeah, her life may not be perfect, but she didn’t know what’d await her in the Faelands and she didn’t like the idea of giving up everything she’d known and stuff
She doesn’t really fear a lot after coming over it though
She gets kinda shaky and talks fast if she’s scared
29. What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very over protective?
Okay that kinda depends
Tristan is scared of corvids because valravn are a thing in the Faelands. Embla understands why somebody would be wary of murder ravens, but when Tristan’s fear gets the best of him and he jumps at the slightest sign of corvid activity with no way to prove it’s caused by valravn, Embla will tease him
30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-work out and post-work out?
She might take a stroll sometimes, and that’s so light of an exercise that she doesn’t have any special preparations or aftercare for it
31. Do they drink? What are they like drunk? What are they like hungover? How do they act when other people are drunk or hungover? Kind or teasing?
She’s a minor, so nah
32. What do they dress like? What sorta shops do they buy clothes from? Do they wear the fashion that they like? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear makeup? What’s their hair like?
She wears p casual, plain clothing, usually in muted dull colors since bright colors tend to hurt her eyes.
She usually just wears her underwear to bed, she doesn’t wear makeup except on special occasions. Her hair is elbow-length and she usually doesn’t do anything special with it
33. What underwear do they wear? Boxers or briefs? Lacey? Comfy granny panties?
Lacey, most of the time. Also sport bras
34. What is their body type? How tall are they? Do they like their body?
She’s 173cm/5′8′’ and kind of average body type wise. She does have a soft tum though! Her self image fluctuates but it’s not bad, she might be a little insecure over her tum from time to time but she usually recovers quickly
36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing?
She’s like. Real good physically speaking. Not that she’s athletic or anything, but in the Faelands she has to take some punches and she takes them alright, and learns to dish some out as well
Her hobbies involve the kinda stuff you’d see a contemporary teen enjoy, stuff like movies and video games, sometimes she likes casually enjoying nature.
She can sing, she’s average, she doesn’t really enjoy singing a lot.
37. Do they like to read? Are they a fast or slow reader? Do they like poetry? Fictional or non fiction?
She’s a p slow reader, and she is inclined to fictional stuff.
38. What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had?
She absolutely admires Aminah’s intelligence and she wishes she were closer to her level.
39. Do they like letters? Or prefer emails/messaging?
She prefers emails and IMs
40. Do they like energy drinks? Coffee? Sugary food? Or can they naturally stay awake and alert?
She’ll usually just go for a soda for her caffeine fix.
41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship?
Embla is bi. She doesn’t have any real preferences physically, but she does like people with soft fluffy hair. Mentally, she’s attracted to kind, brave people, and she 100% needs a partner who makes her feel loved and cared for that poor baby girl
42. What are their goals? What would they sacrifice anything for? What is their secret ambition?
Her main goal is to find Aminah, since she’s gotten lost in the Faelands. She does get involved with helping others reach their goals too. She’s super loyal and her devotion to her friends can reach shonen protagonist levels sometimes
43. Are they religious? What do they think of religion? What do they think of religious people? What do they think of non religious people?
She’s not religious per se, and her opinions on religion boil down to “one of my best friends is a talking winged cat-dragon, this world can be so fucking weird that I can see why somebody would want to contextualize it with faith, you do you”
44. What is their favourite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most?
She doesn’t have any strong preferences, as long as it’s not sunny she’s happy. Sunlight doesn’t hurt her per se, but she gets sunburns p easily and it can make her somewhat sluggish.
45. How do other people see them? Is it similar to how they see themselves?
People will usually see Embla as a loner, sometimes they think of her as hostile due to her wit, but she believes herself to just be an average joe
46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves?
Again, her wit might leave a bad taste in some people’s mouths, that or they might think of her as a stick in the mud. Yeah, those impressions aren’t too accurate
47. How do they act in a formal occasion? What do they think of black tie wear? Do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event?
God she avoids formal stuff like the plague
48. Do they enjoy any parties? If so what kind? Do they organise the party or just turn up? How do they act? What if they didn’t want to go but were dragged along by a friend?
If she’s in the mood, yeah she might, but she’s still an introvert at heart and might just hang out on the sides with friends she already knows, and that still applies if she was forced to tag along.
50. If they could only take one bag of stuff somewhere with them: what would they pack? What do they consider their essentials?
She did this in canon! She packed clothes, basic hygiene equipment, a water bottle and a knife

Bookshelf Briefs 10/10/19
Animeta!, Vol. 1 | By Yaso Hanamura | J-Novel Club – Nineteen-year-old Miyuki Sanada never had anything to be passionate about until she encountered a certain magical girl anime. Now, she’s managed to get hired at the studio that created it, but training is grueling and the pay is abysmal (and her fellow new hires are jerks). Her skills aren’t great, but Miyuki’s a heroine with enthusiasm to spare and already makes some progress in this first volume. I really know very little about how anime is made—particularly nowadays, where digital technology plays a part—so all of that information and the handy flowcharts were fascinating. Miyuki is somewhat of a cipher as a character, but for now I’m okay with that. I look forward to seeing her skills develop and learning along with her. – Michelle Smith
Anonymous Noise, Vol. 16 | By Ryoko Fukuyama | Viz Media – This always seems to end up on the end of my list of Viz when it comes out, but it’s a credit to the title that it still remains riveting regardless. Yuzu dominates this volume, finishing the concert by leaping into the audience (giving their handlers a heart attack), and then asking the band to go on hiatus for a year so that he can sort out his family issues. We also hear about the fate of his father in greater detail, and see that he and his mother have essentially been pushing at each other without listening. That said, when a band takes a year’s hiatus—especially one not that famous yet—it’s the kiss of death. The solution? Get the new single to number one. This is ending soon, and it’ll be a race to the finish. – Sean Gaffney
Blue Exorcist, Vol. 22 | By Kazue Kato | Viz Media – The majority of this volume is a flashback, as the cover might indicate. Still, we also write out Shiemi in this volume, at least for now, and as she’s realized that maybe she does like Rin romantically after all. I’m not sure I trust her in the hands of her family, however. Meanwhile, Rin and Mephisto are going back into the past to see about Father Fujimoto’s past, as well as that of his mother, Yuri. It’s the classic combination of “asshole” and “plucky,” and is quite interesting, despite Mephisto continuing to point out that, being a tragic backstory, there’s only tragedy ahead. I’ve heard this flashback lasts a number of chapters, so next volume should delve deeper into Fujimoto and Yuri’s story. Good stuff. – Sean Gaffney
The Golden Sheep, Vol. 1 | By Kaori Ozaki | Vertical Comics – Years ago, my husband and I were watching Freaks and Geeks when we had a realization: it was undeniably excellent, but it was simply too effective at portraying the shitty things kids do to each other to be fun. The Golden Sheep is like that. Tsugu Miikura has returned to her hometown after six years away to find her former friends much changed. Yuushin has become a delinquent who regularly beats up Sora, who feels like he deserves it for abandoning Yuushin during a time of family crisis. Asari acts on her spiteful jealousy when Yuushin pays attention to Tsugu, leading Tsugu to be ostracized by the rest of the class. It’s painful for readers and characters alike, but mercifully there’s a surprise change of venue at the end of the first volume. I hope everyone’s able to move past their adolescent trauma in the two volumes that remain. – Michelle Smith
Interviews with Monster Girls, Vol. 7 | By Petos | Kodansha Comics – It appears “once a year” is the new schedule for this title, so it’s probably both good and bad that it ends on such a cliffhanger. Before that, though, we get the introduction of a new character (she’s on the cover): Kaoru, a kijimunaa who allegedly can read people’s minds. She’s had standoffish relationships with her prior classmates, which she thinks is because of this but also may be due to her misreading them entirely. No matter, there’s no way she’s not going to be accepted by this group. Meanwhile, she can also see that Tetsuo and Sakie are very much into each other, and this nudges the dullahan girl into a confession that he pretends not to hear—at first. Excellent title, but man, long wait to get here. – Sean Gaffney
Kaze Hikaru, Vol. 27 | By Taeko Watanabe | VIZ Media – For the most part, I quite enjoyed this volume of Kaze Hikaru. It mostly centers around Kamiya serving as Hijikata’s attendant and following his orders to pretend they are in a relationship in order to discourage Councillor Ito, who has gone into full-on predatory homosexual mode. While I’m not fond of this characterization, I do like that the situation forces Kamiya to get to know Hijikata better. As she witnesses some of his vulnerabilities and moments of supririsng humility, her hatred of him begins to fade. I’m glad of it, as this mindset has led her to make too many impulsively foolish decisions in the past. Alas, Ito turns out to have something more substantial on his mind than bedding Hijikata, and we’re reminded that the collapse of the Bakufu is just around the corner. Too bad it’ll be another year before we get the next piece of the story. – Michelle Smith
Missions of Love, Vol. 18 | By Ema Toyama | Kodansha Comics – Perhaps being told that it’s time to wrap this up, Toyama finally comes through after a couple of substandard volumes and gives us an excellent one, mainly driven by Yukina finally getting up the nerve to a) tell Hisame to get bent, and b) tell Shigure that she’s written her book using their own romance as the basis. This stuns him, naturally (his mother collapsing during the filming does not help), but I suspect he’s going to take it pretty well, especially after he reads it. Hisame, meanwhile, is acting like an immature brat, as literally pointed out by Mami, and Yukina’s actions end up driving him to his own writer’s block. I’m, actually looking forward to the nineteenth and final volume. – Sean Gaffney
The Promised Neverland, Vol. 12 | By Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu | VIZ Media – A new arc begins in this volume, and because various things are set into motion, it feels a little disjointed at times. Emma and the others make contact with a supporter in the human world and wait for further contact, but it never comes. Meanwhile, they continue their search for the Seven Walls and suddenly, a year and seven months have passed since the destruction of Goldy Pond. I liked getting a glimpse of what’s been going on with Phil and it was neat seeing some human antagonists, too. I also like that Lucas and Yugo have come to care about the kids so much that they’re willing to sacrifice themselves so the children can get away when the enemy finds them. I guess I’m just a little bummed about the time jump and all the clever strategizing we didn’t get to see. Still, this remains a really good read. – Michelle Smith
The Quintessential Quintuplets, Vol. 5 | By Negi Haruba | Kodansha Comics – Given that she’s had probably the least development of the heroines to date, it’s no surprise that this volume leans heavily on Yotsuba, who also gets the cover. She shows off a few sides that should be surprising but aren’t really, notably a tendency to put the needs and desires of others ahead of her own needs—does this include her feelings for Futaro? And then there’s the girl from his past, who is clearly a Quintuplet but the hair and false name make us wonder which one. (Honestly, she reminded me of Teasing Master Takagi-san, and it distracted me). Compared to other shonen romcoms like, say, the one I’m reviewing further down, this fires on all cylinders. Well done. – Sean Gaffney
Takane & Hana, Vol. 11 | By Yuki Shiwasu | Viz Media – The resolution of the kiss on the nose actually ends up being the lightest part of the book, as we introduce what amounts to the series’ first serious villain. Takane’s cousin Yakumo is back in town, and determined to ruin Takane’s life. Oddly, merely exposing he’s engaged to a high school girl never seems to occur to him. Instead we end up with kidnapping, blackmail, and attempted rape. This left something of a sour taste in my mouth, though the sheer ridiculousness of the helicopter did end up distracting me so that I forgot about it. Sadly, I doubt we’re finished with this guy, and I want to get rid of him and get back to Takane and Hana snarking at each other. It’s what the series does best. – Sean Gaffney
We Never Learn, Vol. 6 | By Taishi Tsutsui | Viz Media – Reading this at the same time as Quintessential Quintuplets is probably a bit of a mistake. Magazine has always done better romantic comedy/dramas than Jump anyway, and this is definitely a weaker volume for We Never Learn, as it has no drama to speak of. Instead there are gags about confusing Rizu’s test score with her cup size, a “whoops we’re all naked in the same bathhouse” chapter, and an introduction to Kirisu’s sister whose highlight is that she doesn’t seem to fall in love with Nariyuki—yet. Again, I have heard that the teacher is by far the most popular character in this manga, which worries me—teacher/student romance is not how I want this to end. Maybe a figure skating ending instead? A weak entry. – Sean Gaffney
The Wize Wize Beasts of the Wizarding Wizdoms | By Nagabe | Seven Seas – Out of all of the manga series currently being released in English, The Girl from the Other Side by Nagabe is consistently one of the most striking in both storytelling and illustration. I was therefore very excited to see more of Nagabe’s work licensed. The Wize Wize Beasts of the Wizarding Wizdoms is a collection of eight short BL stories featuring anthropomorphic animals who either attend or teach at an academy for wizards. The stories are largely independent from one another, although they do share the same setting and there are a few recurring characters and events as well. Tonally, Nagabe has achieved a remarkably effective balance between lightness and darkness with these tales. There are moments of levity and endearment, but the narratives frequently also have unsettling undercurrents to them. The result is a collection that can be both delightfully charming and subtly (and occasionally not so subtly) ominous. – Ash Brown

And the battle goes on: "Friends will be Friends" edition! Who are the truest friends? Friends that support and connect with one another?? A protective friend?? When he's in need of love they give you care and attention?? aaanndd the contestants are:
Puth vs. Thurs
Miriam vs. Yihwah
Fong vs. Ni (TonChon)
Tum vs. Hin
Fujisaki vs. Pang (TonChon)
Two vs. Tul (ATOTS)
Tsuge vs. Rokkaku
Kao (Oxygen) vs. M (SOTUS)
Man vs. Bone
Waan vs. Pond
Duean vs. Ram
Mueang Nan vs. Longtae
Mark vs. Ming
Win vs. Team
Manaow vs. Tiffy
Khiem (HCTM) vs. Jack (Nitiman)
Na vs. Boss (2gether)
Zhao Zi vs. Mon
Jack vs. Inspector M
Oat (MoD) vs. Ai
BoXiang vs. ZhiGang
Shou Yi vs. MuRen
Zon vs. Champ
Saifah vs. Pearl
Kit (Gen Y) vs. Beam
Goodluck!
Puth vs. Thurs
Puth wins this because he's been such a supportive friend to many of his friends. Also, the stupid way he helped Sun and Nuea get together? Adorable and stupid and that special kind of manipulative that only friends get to be.
Miriam vs. Yihwah
Miriam is just amazing, okay? She stood up for Chon on so many levels and helped out Ai and Ni just... she was basically an angel and supported all her gaybies and made sure everything was okay.
Fong vs. Ni (TonChon)
Look, this at least partially because I liked THCT way more than 2gether. And also because Ni was an amazing friend and supportive and there and patient like a saint. So... yeah, he takes it.
Tum vs. Hin
Hin stood up for Gene. Hin risked his job for Gene and he did it in front of the world. Tum did as well but later and behind closed doors and while I do respect him as well... Hin put so much more on the line. And he did it so, so well and with tears in his eyes and I love him.
Fujisaki vs. Pang (TonChon)
We stan Fujisaki in this house. No questions, no substitutions allowed. Pang is awesome and she does her best but does she go on a roof and set off fireworks after the show was canceled to insure that her friends have a good date?
Two vs. Tul (ATOTS)
Tul is a great friend. Absolutely fantastic. But Two stands beside Third with such willingness and such openness and takes his side so thoroughly... He wins by the tiniest bit.
Tsuge vs. Rokkaku
Rokkaku was ready to throw down Tsuge for the sake of thinking he had hurt Minato. Like, I can't pick anyone over Rokkaku. Tsuge is amazing but Rokkaku would do anything for a friend. Also, he's adorable beyond measure.
Kao (Oxygen) vs. M (SOTUS)
M is such a good friend but Kao scales the side of a building to rescue his friend from being held hostage by his father. Like, M, love ya but you can't compare.
Man vs. Bone
I just love Man. He's the best part of 2gether, okay? So he wins this.
Waan vs. Pond
Pond is fun but he's more comedic relief than good friend. Waan really does his best. Though I do think he should have talked to Pai more rather than keeping all the Itt stuff secret. But whatever. At least he really tried.
Duean vs. Ram
Ram is willing to get into a boxing match for his friends. Duean is a good brother and a good friend but I think Ram edges him out simply by being a bit smarter. Duean might have him on loyalty but Ram can solve an issue with thinking.
Mueang Nan vs. Longtae
No one from FUTS is gonna win, okay? Also, Mueng Nan is a good wingman but that doesn't mean he's a good friend. A good friend would be talking to Mork about how stupid he's being. Longtae listened and learned and opened his heart and seriously he was so, so good and so understanding and so supportive.
Mark vs. Ming
Honestly, I think part of this is when the shows aired? The friendships in Thai BLs have been increasingly important and Gen Y did come after 2moons/2moons2. But also Mark just gets some of the absolute best friendship moments with Yu so he's gotta win.
Win vs. Team
This one was HARD. They're both amazing friends and exactly what their friends need them to be... but I think Team's support edges out Win just a little bit in terms of friendship.
Manaow vs. Tiffy
Tiffy kinda got fucked over by the show so... gotta give it to Manaow. I think Tiffy had all the potential in the world but the show just kept pushing her in the wrong direction.
Khiem (HCTM) vs. Jack (Nitiman)
Both fantastic hetero buddies! But Jack and his adorable willingness to play wingman despite being in the love with the girl he's pointing towards his playboy friend? So sweet.
Na vs. Boss (2gether)
I had to pick Na. I love Na. And his willingness to sacrifice his love for the sake of friendship? And then everyone joining him on the beach and the sheer comfort there? Ughhhh so gooooood.
Zhao Zi vs. Mon
ZZ is just an angel, okay? I love him dearly. And get this one because Mon is adorable but he's also so, so sassy and maybe not always the most supportive. He has good friends, though. But ZZ? ZZ was ready to throwdown just at the thought of someone judging ShaoFei for being gay.
Jack vs. Inspector M
Jack wins this because he's got his scary switchblade tricks. Also he's a friend the entire time. Inspector M is close, though. No denials. But there's something about Jack's support and the way his friendship turns to love as well... he wins.
Oat (MoD) vs. Ai
Another hard one! This one is so, so hard. I don't wanna choose. Whyyyy. But Oat helped cover up deaths and saved people and I just had to give it to him. But it was close! I've gone back and forth over and over again. Because they're both amazing friends.
BoXiang vs. ZhiGang
Honest statement, I feel like I haven't watch either of these BLs recently enough to tell you. Sorry.
Shou Yi vs. MuRen
MuRen is just such a soft, sweet friend. And then the occasional little snarks as he takes care of them? He has to win. What a darling.
Zon vs. Champ
This was also a challenge. But I feel like Zon had more good friends than he was a good friend for the most part. So it goes to Champ. Who was a very good friend as well.
Saifah vs. Pearl
Pearl's own show might have been a little fucked (which is sad because it was GL and it had potential but just went nowhere) but she was an amazing friend at all times. So she takes the gold here.
Kit (Gen Y) vs. Beam
I just adore Kit. Beam as good and he did his best and he was a good friend but Kit nearly destroyed his own romantic relationship to help a friend. Was it a good choice? No. Was it true friendship loyalty? Yes.
#make me choose#make me choose anon#ilu anon#holy fuck so many#thaibl#thai bl#thai bl friendship#thaibl friendship#bl friendship#holy shit so many#ahahahah#did it though

Will Small Companies Beat Large Corporations if They Use Blockchain?
An American startup is building a blockchain agnostic protocol in a bid to provide small businesses with affordable access to new technology, and drive the mass adoption of blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
Opporty, with experienced founders from the U.S., has also set up a “trusted and verified services marketplace” on the Ethereum blockchain, with features such as smart contracts, decentralized escrow, and lead generation. The company believes its platform helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete with large corporations, without requiring large investments in technology and marketing.
Widespread coverage
By now, Opporty has launched its platform’s localizations in China, the UK, Canada, the USA, and Australia. As the company reported to Cointelegraph, currently there are approximately up to 10 registrations per day, by new providers on the platform. “Therefore, we observe that SMEs are ready to grow and benefit with Opporty, an online Marketplace that cares,” added the company’s representative.
First providers already signed up
In the beginning of 2018, Opporty has acquired two new clients in New York. Both offer crypto payment options on their websites.
Universal Accounting Systems, uses the company’s platform to allow its clients to pay with Bitcoin and Ethereum for tax preparation and other services. It uses Opporty’s smart widget to offer its clients a simple view of its services, and allows them to pay with cryptocurrency.
Hudson Law Group, a midtown firm headed by David Treyster, has posted some customized crypto-based offerings for its clients using the Opporty marketplace. It also uses the smart widget and has already begun receiving crypto transactions through it.
The company says, the amount of U.S.-based providers which registered on the platform has increased. The Australian version, which has recently been released, already has new providers that accept crypto payments, including OPP, the company’s token.
The widgets by Opporty allow users to receive payments from customers. Companies that have listed their crypto-based offers at Opporty, get smart widgets on their websites. Once the widget is placed, consumers can choose from several payment options, including ETH and BTC.
“Small business owners now realize that cryptocurrencies can give them a head start over their competition,” Opporty founder Sergey Grybniak said in a release. Opporty enables anyone to use cryptocurrency, and the attendant benefits of blockchain, without having to master the underlying technology, the entrepreneur added.
Opporty’s Plasma Protocol
In March 2018, the Opporty team decided to implement Ethereum’s Plasma Protocol to “resolve the trust issues in business transactions and lack of privacy in traditional blockchain solutions.” The First backend version of Opporty’s Plasma solution allowed users to process around 5,000 transactions per second, the company said.
“Then we have decided to come up with our own solution for Plasma Cash, an enhancement technology for Plasma Protocol. After tireless work, our developers managed to enhance the technology to achieve the highest public test, which was more than Alipay at peak,” reported the Opporty team to Cointelegraph.
Opporty’s B2B platform allows providers to list their offerings on the B2B services marketplace in a targeted manner, post requests for proposals, receive bids, and execute deals.
The company claims that it resolves trust and sustainability problems between counterparties by storing business transaction data, including transaction quality, on the blockchain. It enables verification and validation of counterparty trustworthiness by implementing the Plasma Protocol. Its benefits position Opporty as a reliable option for domestic and cross-border transactions using cryptocurrencies, which can be used in supply chain risk management, corporate transactions and government procurements. The PoE protocol allows integration with other blockchain-powered platforms.
Big Achievements
Opporty’s project is constantly acquiring new updates and features, such as BLS threshold signatures and Delegated Proof of Stake, zk-SNARKs.
Right now Opporty is in its beta development, with MVP (Minimum Viable Product) already available for application and use. The open-source code has been released on GitHub.
Opporty is a member of China Cooperative Trade Enterprise Association, and the company is advised by Mr. Daniel Wu, who is a Deputy Director of One Belt One Road Development center.
In April 2018, Opporty joined the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA), the world’s largest open source blockchain initiative. EEA is a non-profit organization that supports Ethereum-based technology best practices and the whole industry.
The company is proud to be a partner of InfiniVision Network Technology (Shanghai) in the fields of big data and blockchain integrations.
In 2018, Opporty has scored two Bronze Awards, a renowned reward among entrepreneurs and innovators. It won the Stevie International Business Competition in the following nominations: Company of the Year — Business or Professional Services — Small category, and Online Marketing Campaign of the Year category.
Understanding that an online marketplace could be something much more than just a business product, Opporty has become a UN Global Compact participant. Taking part in this initiative, the Opporty team conducts research work in the fields of resolving issues of poverty and unemployment.
OPP, the company’s token, is already available on several exchanges, and the list is being updated.

Awards
The Sequel Show of the Week: New Game!!
The exclamation points symbolize my excitement for this show. Because it’s back, with those colorful characters we all know and love! This episode started off a bit... questionable with the whole fanservice scene but otherwise it was nice start to the series’ second installment. Not to mention my favorite character from last year’s back and better than ever, with the new goal to overcome her shyness (Hifumi if you don’t know). Who knew that crippling social anxiety could be so cute?
Otherwise there’s not much else to say about the show for now. It’s still super colorful and the storyline with the new game (heh) sounds like it could be a nice platform for the characters to develop further. I’m excited to see the new characters shown in the OP too, though also a bit weary knowing all too well how one bad character can ruin a show for me (Stella no Mahou, Hinako Note).
The Old School Sports Show of the Season Award: Nana Maru San Batsu
I mentioned this last week, but it was reaffirmed with this week’s episode. Because this week we get introduced to “rival who’s better than everyone and knows it”, and “old childhood friend who’s now on the opposing team”. Wao, how creative.
On an unrelated note, I actually dropped this show at first when they introduced the rival. But then I gave the show a second shot, and hey it wasn’t too bad. It’s definitely got the feel of a sports shounen, which I’m not really too keen about given I don’t usually like these shows. But I’m sticking around for the quiz questions and to learn more about quiz bowl. Hopefully we get more of an emphasis on that.
The “Something’s Off” Award: Centaur no Nayami
Finishing the episode, I didn’t know what to feel. Because it wasn’t really that bad of an episode. Sure, there were a few moments that were questionable, like the whole dress-up thing with Akechi or the wing-cuddling scene with Akechi or just any scene with Akechi (who’s apparently become my least favorite character in the show). But IDK, I wouldn’t say it was boring or a bad episode of anime. Yet there’s something that felt... off about the show. I don’t know what it is exactly, but there were a lot of factors in the show that made it feel kinda weird.
The first thing I noticed off the bat was the lack of BGM. It can be good if used correctly, but not here. The silent moments felt awkward and didn’t really contribute to anything. Another thing I noticed was that the pacing of the show was off. An example of that was the sudden jump from the main trio to a random couple in the background: it was pretty jarring, even with the somewhat cute payoff in the end. Finally, and the most important, was that it just lacked emotion. I went through the whole episode, and in the end I felt... nothing. Like I was just sitting in my chair for 23 minutes doing nothing. All of these problems could probably be traced to a lack of good directing, which makes sense given the director and the studio behind the show. With all that in mind though, I’ll still continue watching this show. It isn’t terribly boring to me and there were some enjoyable moments despite what I said literally a few moments ago. And honestly that makes it better than a lot of shows I’ve given a shot this season, so it’s still a nice Sunday watch for now.
The “I Guess It’s a Thing” Award: Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni
I guess this is a reoccurring award now. At least until the season settles in and I have a static list of shows.
So yeah, this show with the isekai and smartphone. It was a thing. One thing that was on my mind the whole time was that this show reminded me a lot of Flying Witch, and not in a good way. For those of you who don’t know, Flying Witch was a show I didn’t like, and for a somewhat silly reason. That reason? It just... feels off. Like the characters are “too happy” for lack of a better term. I mean every character in that show lacks any snark/sarcasm and everybody’s so positive and happy. Coming from someone who hangs out with some sarcastic self-deprecating people, it’s weird.
So we come back to this show, which had that sorta same vibe. The main character felt... off. He wasn’t overly positive, but he kinda took everything thrown at him a bit too calmly. Sure, he did the right things by showing a willingness to learn stuff like magic and reading/writing, but he wasn’t very interesting. Like the shows below, I’m strongly considering dropping this, but I’ll give it a few more episodes to see how the other characters are. But so far it’s not particularly an interesting watch.
The “Red Flags” Dropped Show of the Week Award: Several shows below starting with...
Hajimete no Gal
Just... I’m not about that lyfe. Ecchi shows aren’t really my thing and on top of that the character design is pretty questionable and I really don’t like the main character’s friends. I didn’t get very far into this show (like 4 minutes in), but it was enough to know that there are better shows that I could be spending my time on.
Dive!! and Gamers!
Boring. That’s really what it boils down to for these two shows. Funny considering the total number of exclamation points in both of the titles.
Konbini Kareshi
Technically I should’ve watched this show last week but I didn’t like having the voices come from only my left earbud. Well I found a legitimate source (AKA I renewed my premium Crunchyroll subscription) and finally watched the episode. And... then I dropped it. You know that type of character design that’s present in a lot of BL-type media? Well that was a thing with this show. I didn’t let that stop me though, and continued on. In the end it was the fact that this show, like the two shows above, was pretty boring. Plus romance isn’t really in short supply with the shows that have it this season (well show), so it’s not too necessary for me to watch this to get my romance fix.
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e
Before watching this episode, I saw comparisons to Oregairu. Well, that’s not really true. This is the second time I’ve watched an anime because of Oregairu connections, the first being Gi(a)rlish Number. The problem with this show was not with the characters, but with the premise. Character-wise I can see how people compared it to Oregairu: the MCs of the two shows are kinda similar, there’s the long black-haired ice queen, and there’s the genki characters. But with this show, the whole idea of the show didn’t attract me too much, and I didn’t get very far before deciding to watch the next show on my list.
Best Episode of the Week: Isekai Shokudou
One word: WHOLESOME. This week’s episode single-handedly put this show all the way up to #1, and the reason for that is how wholesome it was. Apparently watching people enjoy eating good food is comforting. Who knew?
But yeah, that was a dang good episode of anime. I was smiling the whole time watching the people eat, and I got emotional both halves of the story when the girl was talking about her dead grandpa (relative?) and when the guy was rushing back to the restaurant with the biggest grin on his face for frickin fried shrimp. It’s still too early, but so far this show’s risen up to be my favorite of the season, and dare I say year? Well, that might be a bit premature. If there’s one thing I don’t like about the show so far though it’s the fantasy elements during the beginning of the storylines, but that’s kinda nitpicky since those help to create a backstory for the character so there’s more impact when we see them enjoy the food. I’m also a bit worried about the dragon character from last episode (with her whole treasure = restaurant thing potentially causing issues down the road) and there’s also the concern of how the other characters’ll be. But for now, I’ll just enjoy the show and the food.
And that’s all for this week! Hopefully with only one more show on my radar for this season, the rankings above should be fairly solid (give or take a few shows). So far this season’s off to a good start; hopefully it stays good. As always thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in the next post!

Okay so what are some shows you'd recommend if you like bad buddy
This is always hard to ask because I need to figure out why you liked Bad Buddy (I know, but not everyone did). Here's what I liked about it:
university setting,
great acting & complex characters,
interesting friendship groups,
enemies to lovers,
angsty coming out,
high production values,
decent chemistry,
GL side couple (RARE),
decent queer rep,
light seme/uke,
twisted tropes but lots of them
So I am going to rec based on those criteria. But what I rec isn’t going to be able to tackle everything. (My full ep-by-ep snark fest is here)
10 BLs to Watch if You Love Bad Buddy
1. Seven Days (grey)
(what? don’t look so surprised)
High school setting, great acting & complex characters, not much friendship groups, opposites attract (not enemies to lovers), no coming out (it’s Japan), high production values (hair is cray cray), great chemistry but tame kisses, no side couples, no queer rep, light seme/uke, twisted tropes but not many of them. Also it’s only two movies so much shorter than BB. No triggers.
One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses. Full review here.
2. We Best Love (WeTV)
University setting (part one), great acting but relatively simple characters, not much friendship groups, but they are there. Enemies to lovers, angsty coming out for one character (but that’s in the second part), decent production values (it’s Taiwan, they are realistic more than stylized), FANTASTIC chemistry, 2 BL side couples one of which ends happily but not the other, very good queer rep, seme/uke but not really heterosexually dysmorphic at all, lots of tropes but all classically executed. Shorter and faster paced than Thai BL. No real triggers except for some light manipulation and possible dub-con (I will ague about this, tho.)
Brilliant acting save this show from a messy (pretty classically manga) narrative with a lot of angst. You have to buy in to a yaoi aesthetic with this one, accept that things move fast and occasionally confuse but that everything will be okay. It’s the ultimate pining seme meets the ultimate tsundere uke and WBL successfully manages to combine the best elements of Korean, Thai, and Japanese BL as it exists right now. Couple that to the insane chemistry from the leads, and we have one of the greatest BLs of all time, cooking higher heat to a recipe I doubt anyone else will ever be able to replicate since only Taiwan is this flexible.
3. Semantic Error (Viki)
University setting, great acting fun/unique (if not exactly complex) characters, one interesting/fun friendship group, enemies to lovers, no coming out (this is Korea), very high/STUNNING production values, great chemistry, bisexual rep but no side couple, very strong seme/uke, twisted tropes and lots of them. Shorter than Thai BL. No triggers.
Korea hit it entirely out of the Parks with Semantic Error by doing a university set BL featuring everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. It has Korea's signature quality executed perfectly, and added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL. Full review here.
4. Utsukushii Kare AKA My Beautiful Man (GaGa)
High school & university setting, great acting and very complex characters, no real friendship groups, not really enemies to lovers this is the whipping boy trope, and that’s a BIG buy in, so this is where it might not work for you. No side couple, no coming out and little queer rep but very high production values (it’s Japan after all). Much better than normal chemistry for a JBL and higher heat content. Twisted seme/uke and twisted tropes but very few of them. Shorter than Thai BL, trigger warning for bullying and stalking.
One of the best most Japanese BLs to release in the last decade, as weird and as messed up as any 2000′s yaoi: emo af and hella warped, entirely true to itself with no attempt made to modify its POV for modern sensibilities or current BL fandom. It used seriously old school problematic and kinky tropes, like whipping boy, for a truly uncompromising piece that also manages to hit up themes of communication, consent, and self acceptance. It’s a wonderful BL but uniquely dirty and harsh, in the best possible way - Japanese cinema, uncompromising. Full review here.
5. Blueming (iQIYI)
University setting, great acting and complex characters, not much friendship groups but some home live (rare in KBL), enemies to lovers, angsty coming out (sort of), high production values, decent chemistry, no side couple, no queer rep, light seme/uke, twisted tropes but not many of them. Shorter than Thai BL but a little longer than other KBLs.
It’s a tiny bit dark and a tiny bit bittersweet, almost too honest to a university experience and first love for BL. I wasn’t into it at first, but the leads are solid and by ep 5 it got really good, becoming a narrative about self discovery meets understanding and accepting others people’s flaws without hurting them. Ultimately we witnessed two characters maturing because of each other and their mutual affection, without that affection becoming the conflict point. Instead tension was built around other aspects of identity, popularity, and self-worth. While production values were a touch lower than usual, Blueming included decent kisses and other forms of intimacy and a satisfying ending (all unusual for Korea) plus there’s judicious and very elegant use of tropes, (which is expected for Korea). Full review here.
6. SOTUS (GMMTV’S YT channel)
The university BL to end all university BLs, great acting and complex characters, fabulous friendship groups, enemies to lovers, angsty coming out (to friends not family), high production values, not great chemistry, lesbian rep but not couple, het side couple. Strong seme/uke btu not as bad as Thailand can get. This the BL that launched a thousand tropes. Same length, style and production company as Bad Buddy. This was their first.
This is the BL that launched a hundred BLs. No literally, It was SOTUS’s international success that pretty much built the Thai BL industry into the juggernaut it is today. People have baggage around SOTUS, I have nostalgia. Review here. Trigger warning for bullying.
7. Addicted Heroin (Viki)
High school setting (university aged actors), great acting and complex characters, weird af friendship group and family dynamics, enemies to lovers, no coming out, high production values, great chemistry, no side couples really, no queer rep (this is still China), strong seme/uke, twisted tropes and lots of them. Same length as the Thai stuff but strongly manga influenced, so yaoi trigger warnings around ROUGH sex, dub-con, and kidnapping for love.
Unfinished due to censorship but still very good, well acted and shot, rich kid falls madly for the genius poor kid in his class, starts an aggressive pursuit, includes obsession, stepbrother trope, plus some “cheating.” I love this one but it has rough edges. Stop watching right after the make out in baby’s new car.
8. PeteKao - Dark Blue Kiss (GMMTV YT channel)
This was actually the first thing I thought of when you asked this question. Here’s a suggested watch order for this one. They have three installments of begin a side couple in Kiss Me Again provided as a BL cut by GMMTV and then their own series, Dark Blue Kiss. You should watch both.
University setting, great acting and complex characters, one of my favorite friendship groups, friends to enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers, multiple angsty af coming out, including a long stretch of a secret relationship. High production values, good chemistry, BL side couple, not much queer rep, light seme/uke, lots of classic tropes and some great domesticity.
It’s a long involved complicated story, but there is one, and I think if you like Bad Buddy this is probubly your best bet.
9. Why R U? (Viki)
University setting, decent acting & complex characters, good friendship groups, enemies to lovers, angsty coming out, good production values, fantastic chemistry, two BL couples, okay queer rep, strong seme/uke, all the tropes, soem cheese and soem cringe. Some bully triggers but much lighter than SOTUS. Long Thai treatment but story waffles.
It’s pretty clear Fighter is hella gay for Tutor and just can’t work his shit out, and that Saifah has a crush on Zon, but it takes them all a while to flirt their way into lovers, so they coudl sort of be thought of as enemies first? The story on this one is messy, but you can’t fault the chemistry, and it is one of the best high heat BL we’ve ever gotten from Thailand in terms of things like consent.
10. TharnType (Viki)
I don’t rec TT often (here’s why), but it fits the criteria so it made the cut.
University setting, great acting and complex characters, interesting friendship groups, enemies to lovers, seriously angsty coming out, high production values, AMAZING chemistry, multiple BL side couples with all the issues, damaging queer rep, strong seme/uke and husband/wife language, classic tropes and lots of them. I don’t know your triggers, but if you have them, all the trigger warnings on this one (dub con, rape, mental illness, bullying, rough play etc...) Long Thai treatment but story waffles.

Thai BLs That Feature a Popularity+Beauty Contest & Talent Show
I think this is a popular trope for the same reason proms are a popular trope in YA romances. A good dramatic event gathering is always useful to drive narrative.
It’s origin is probubly the 2 Moons y-novel but it first visually shows up and became popular for Thai BL in SOTUS. It’s called various things: Star Contest, Moon Contest, Moon & Star Contest, King & Queen Contest.
What it amounts to is a popularity + talent + beauty contest like prom King/Queen.
I think we’d seen even more of them in Thai BL but because they require a crowd scene and lots of speaking roles, they’re too costly.
SOTUS
How it showed up?
In conjunction with freshy games, and hazing as a kind of quest to be won.
How the boyfriend to be reacts?
Result?
He won.
2 Moons
How it showed up? As a kind of talent show that had to be practiced for and gave the wild doctors and chance to flirt.
(Anyone else mis pinkmilk’s snark subs? good times)
How the boyfriend to be reacts? Buys him all the red roses in the world so he wins the popularity side of the contest. Takes him home.
Result? He won Mr Popularity. His best friend Ming wins Star. Boyfriend takes him home. Smooches.
2 Moons 2
Same as the above, only prettier.
My Gear and Your Gown
How it showed up? As a mostly off screen beauty contest.
How the boyfriend to be reacts? Arranges to throw the contest so baby wins. Arranges a photo display of their past, smooches him silly in front of his homophobic parents.
Result? He wins but doesn’t much care about it.
Oxygen
How it showed up? Mostly as a talent show and excuse for sing your feelings, that Solo resents having to attend but is the reason he finds out more about Gui.
How the boyfriend to be reacts? Smiles lovingly from the audience, holds his hand.
Result? Solo wins but more importantly to him: Boyfriend!
Star in My Mind
How it showed up? Another mostly off screen kinda thing. A vehicle for the cohabitation trope and establishing of a friendship group.
How the boyfriend to be reacts? Gives him all his own red roses so he wins the popularity side of the contest. Takes him to the beach.
Result? He won Mr Popularity. The love rival wins the contest and tries to steal the boy. DRAMA.

Not exactly an ask but I just wanted to offer a very hearty happy new year and a lot of joy from the past year's snark, our shared opinions that weren't widely and the general joy of this corner of the internet in general. It's been a wild year and it's been a joy and honor to share so much with you.
What can I say, I'm sentimental. May the year be good, the BL full of marriage equality and the actors discover chemistry in their kisses that works for you.
Aw, you as well! You know it's partly your presence on tumblr that convinced me to reboot this blog.
So this could all, in the end be your fault!
May your BL 2023 be full of lap sitting and domesticity and at least one really great VBL!
It has been an honor and a joy to share this crazy little pop culture journey with you, my friend.
Oh and I will be in your city in a few months, so I demand best restaurant or other c-town foodie tips!!
