CAFE SUADA Cup 10 p47
I've certainly been in situations where I could get money for a project, but it didn't feel like the right way to get it. Sometimes I regret turning those avenues down, others I remember that I've retained a lot of control over my art and that feels good :)

When the harsh day ends in Olesya, those who truly live by night have a place to call their own at Caffè di Notte (aka Notte). The evening barista, Teddy, serves tea and other tasty treats to her regulars who normally lurk in the loathsome and lovely dark. To know what tales lay in wait, you only need to drink the story in. Reading this will make your day better.

I wrote up half of my Eisners roundup back in May and then my arm crapped out profoundly. But here is the rest of my thoughts about all the comics and graphic novels I read this year, of which there were many! As usual particular faves are bolded.
JAN
Delicious in Dungeon v6-12
FEB
MAR
The Chromatic Fantasy - HA
I think that if you are following me you will probably like this book. Great stuff on gender and sex and religion in a deeply fun art style. (Best I can describe it is the really trippy bits of Alice in Wonderland.)
Gleem - Freddy Carasco
Fluid, delightful linework.
APR
A Guest in the House - E M Carroll
E M Carroll has been doing some of the best horror comics in the business for about a decade and this continues the streak. Twisty, turny psychological horror
MAY
Where I’m Coming From - Barbara Brandon-Croft
Collection of Brandon-Croft’s wonderful 90s newspaper strips about Black womanhood.
Roaming - Jillian and Mariko Tamaki
Love letter to being messy and gay and young in the city.
Local Man v1-2 - Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs
This is a fun little deconstruction of comics tropes. Inga, the love interest slash female lead, is the best part of the comic.
Danger and Other Unknown Risks - Ryan North and Erica Henderson
Great story, great characters, great art. What if you were in charge of preventing the second end of the world, and also your mentor figure was SO dubious, and also you had the world’s biggest, cutest dog?
Family Style: Memories of an American from Vietnam - Thien Pham
First of a number of immigration memoirs nominated for the Eisners. The storytelling here is excellent; the art wasn’t my personal favorite.
In Limbo - Deb JJ Lee
I always have such a hard time judging memoir comics, but I think this walks a good line between gesturing at and directly portraying its fairly heavy subject matter, and the art is stunning.
Last on His Feet: Jack Johnson and the Battle of the Century - Adrian Matekja and Youssef Daoudi
Probably my favorite thing I read in this batch. Lyrical, poetic art that plays with paneling and pagination to incredible effect. Does not shy away from the everyday brutality of either boxing, racism, or Johnson’s personal life.
Messenger: The Legend of Muhammad Ali - Marc Bernardin
I read this right after Last on His Feet and boy did it suffer for it. Unfortunately, this is just an entirely forgettable bio of Muhammad Ali.
Sunshine - Jarrett J. Krosoczka
I wish I liked Krosoczka’s art. This did make me cry but it’s a memoir about working at a camp for kids with cancer, so it would be pretty hard for it NOT to.
Blackward - Lawrence Lindell
This would have been a perfectly serviceable 2010s-era webcomic. Not everything needs to be a book!
The Out Side: Trans & Nonbinary Comics
Graphic anthologies are deeply hit or miss for me but this one was extremely solid!
Frontera - Jaco -  Salcedo and Julio Anta
Excellent story about the violence of the border, deeply undercut (for me) by a very jarring ghost subplot.
A First Time for Everything - Dan Santat
Sweet little story about a class trip abroad with glowing art.
Shubeik Lubeik - Deena Mohamed
I'm so bummed I couldn't hear Mohamed speak at MICE because I LOVED this. Uses genies as a vehicle to explore the fault lines of class and politics in Egyptian society.
A Boy Named Rose - Gaëlle Geniller
Lovely art but this was entirely nothing. Remember Teahouse? This is that but sfw and also without any narrative tension.
Comics for Ukraine
Almost universally bad, with the exception of "Talking to a Hill."  I think sometimes the medium of superhero comics is not the one with which to tackle every issue,
Parasocial -  Erica Henderson and Alex de Campi
Tense paneling, solid art, I didn't care for the ending of the story.
Are You Willing to Die for the Cause? - Chris Oliveros
This relies almost entirely in first person accounts, which I like as a device for exploring who gets to claim historicity, but it means that the actual narrative is kind of incoherent.
The Great Beyond - Léa Murawiec
My other favorite from this batch! This is a story about celebrity and fame and being remembered, but the art is some of the most fluid and expressive stuff I've seen in years and the creativity of the conceit keeps it from ever feeling run of the mill.
Memento Mori - Tiitu Takalo
I am pretty down on illness memoirs, but I liked this more than I thought I would.
Swan Songs - W. Maxwell Prince et al
This collection of stories about endings was going to be a winner for me and then the final comic was SO bad it soured the whole experience for me.
Monstrous: A Transracial Adoption Story - Sarah Myer
This (like a lot of the comics in the teen category) did make me cry! The art is a little too scratchy for me at times- it's intentional, but not always deployed to best advantage.
Phantom Road v1 - Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Hernández Walta
Is this basically Alice Isn't Dead with a guy as the driver? Well, yes, but it is good. Lemire always nails creeping dread and Hernández Walta's art is ominously flat in an excellent way.
Black Cloak v1 - Kelly Thompson and Meredith McLaren
Compelling story undercut by webtoony art that's way too cute for the fantasy noir vibe of the narrative.
My Girlfriend's Child v1 - Mamoru Aoi
It's always kind of wild to me to see a completely bog standard teenage pregnancy narrative get nominations like this and then I remember that most people making these nominations do not like, know a lot of people who were pregnant as teens.
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons - Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda
This is simply not very good art or story.
The Cull v1 - Kelly Thompson and Mattia de Iulis
The story here is really intriguing! I wish we had a little more time to get to know the characters before getting thrown into Plot but it's real solid. I don't always love this hyper realistic 3D rendering but it works for the story.
The Summer Hikaru Died v1 - Mokumokuren
I could wish that the translator hadn't rendered all of the dialogue as weirdly southern but this is a really good gay rural horror. Came back wrong simply hits!
Mabuhay! - Zachary Sterling
Cute! Didn't really slam me but I would have had a lot of fun with this as a kid.
Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir - Pedro Martín
This was both lovely and deeply felt and also laugh out loud funny.
Saving Sunshine - Saadia Faruqi and Shazleen Khan
Extremely sweet sibling story.
Fire Power v1-4 - Robert Kirkman and Chris Samnee
The Good Asian v1-2 - Pornsak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgi
Eden II - Kenny Wroten
This has great moments and is also deeply irony poisoned. I would love to read a weird queer comic by someone who was not Online. Also I could not tell any of the characters apart, because they were all thin white-presenting people from fake Seattle. ALSO the speech bubbles were so clearly added in after the fact that it was often difficult to tell who was saying what. I'm not a purist about speech bubble rules or anything but I gotta be able to tell what order to read your dialogue!
Three Rocks: The Story of Ernie Bushmiller: The Man Who Created Nancy - Bill Griffith
The frame narrative is solid, but the best part of this was just the actual Nancy comics included within.
The Horizon v1 - JH
This is just apocalypse torture porn tbh.
Thing: Inside the Struggle for Animal Personhood - Sam Machado
Here's the thing. I think there are compelling arguments for animal rights. I would also like to see us put that same kind of energy towards ensuring full rights for people first. Also the art and writing here are simply not very good.
Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons - Kelly Sue deConnick, Phil Jiminez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott
I wasn't sure I would love this because of my noted Picky Feelings about feminist Greek myths but I liked it more than I thought! The art is phenomenal.
Superman (2023) v1 - Joshua Williamson
The annual is what was nominated, but the single issues are the actual stars of this trade. Williamson does a really solid job of situating Clark in community.
Wonder Woman (2023) v1 - Tom King
I find the story pretty grating (why does Diana need to be fighting the entire US government?)
Poison Ivy (2022) v1 - G Willow Wilson and Marcio Takara
YAY we love an ecoterrorist getting her due. Takara's art leans full Annihilation.
My Picture Diary - Maki Fujiwara
This suffered in comparison to last year's alt-manga diary comics from a similar era, Talk to My Back, which was one of my favorite books of the year. Fujiwara's art is very stolid and pretty simplistic and while it works for the subject matter it wasn't my favorite.
River’s Edge - Kyoko Okazaki
This is SO messed up! We are right in the violence and emotional mess of teenagerhood.
The Yakuza’s Bias v1 - Teki Yatsuda
This gets a little one note by the end of the collection but yakuza falls right into Kpop stan culture is such a funny premise that I didn't mind.
How to Love: A Guide to Feelings and Relationships for Everyone - Alex Norris
This is much cuter and more charming than I thought it'd be.
The Talk - Darrin Bell
Bell is best known for his political cartoons and this brings the same kind of incisive political wit to a longform piece while adding a great deal of empathy.
Transformers (2023) v1 - Daniel Warren Johnson
I am so sorry to DWJ who did his very very absolute best to make me care about Transformers. The art and writing are great I just don't go here.
Kill Your Darlings - Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan
Pretty mid dark fairytale.
PeePee PooPoo - Caroline Cash
Diversity win this lesbian alt comic is just as annoying as the straight ones!
Superman: Lost - Christopher Priest and Carlo Pagulayan
Ugh. Superman: Lost was one of my favorite takes on Superman and Lois last year and I still think the first like… five issues are phenomenal. As soon as we get the weird infidelity/assault/pregnancy narrative I was out.
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees - Patrick Horvath
I simply hate cutesy animal horror.
The Devil’s Cut, edited by Will Dennis
I know I read this but I have no memory of it. My notes say I liked it, and I'm generally in support of DSTLRY and creator-owned comics as a concept.
Marvel Age #1000, edited by Tom Brevoort
Deeply masturbatory.
JUN
Deep Cuts - Kyle Higgins et al
I liked this so much it was my end of the year staff pick! It's hard to do comics that really capture the collaborative and improvisational feeling of a good jazz session but this anthology absolutely does.
Somna: A Bedtime Story - Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay
Tula Lotay's art is absolutely gorgeous but I was kind of bored by "what if a Puritan housewife was fucking the devil."
Watership Down: The Graphic Novel - James Sturm
I think these rabbits are too cute to really capture the horror of Watership Down.
Delicates - Brenna Thummler
It's really difficult to tell a story about a kid who is bullying someone else and have it land sympathetically for both parties and Thummler manages it with an uncommon emotional depth.
Buzzing - Samuel Sattin and Rye Hickman
OOF this hit me right in the psych kid feelings. Very sweet and really captured the feeling of the complicated family dynamics that surround kids with mental illness.
#DRCL midnight children v1 - Shin’ichi Sakamoto
Insane choice to make Lucy Westenras a bishie.
Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise - Tradd Moore
Did not think I would ever be rooting for a Doctor Strange comic but this is the kind of psychedelic universe bending art I would love to see more of from his whole character premise!
Bea Wolf - Zach Weinersmith
Absolutely delightful adaptation of Beowulf for children. Weinersmith really captures the feeling of the old English language in a story about a bunch of little kids defending their treehouse.
HP Lovecraft’s The Shadow over Innsmouth - Gou Tanabe
I don't feel qualified to examine the choice by a Japanese artist to adapt a story about Lovecraft's fear of Chinese and Pacific Islander genes entering Massachusetts. I haven't read much actual Lovecraft but did we all know it was that racist? I mean, I knew he was racist but my god.
The Monkey King v2 - Chaiko Tsai
EXCELLENT adaptation of Journey into the West! I couldn't get v1 in time for voting but the art and the pacing here are just so much fun.
It’s Jeff! - Kelly Thompson and Gurihiru
This is extremely cute but it is ultimately just a cute animal comic.
Earthdivers v1 - Stephen Graham Jones and Davide Gianfelice
I hope you don't need me to tell you Earthdivers is good. It's good.
Birds of Prey (2023) v1 - Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero
I was so dubious about this one that I ended my yuri zine piece talking about it. And then it was in fact really really good. The team dynamics are excellent here and the art is perfectly suited to it (except for one issue with a guest penciller where the art is execrable.)
Shazam! (2023) v1 - Mark Waid and Dan Mora
Waid and Mora are sort of the DC powerhouse couple at the moment and I know that at any minute Mora is gonna switch to only doing covers, which will make me very sad. This was way more fun than I expected to have with a Shazam comic but the kids here are delightful without being cutesy and Waid does a great job balancing Billy being a real character and also a believable hero.
Four Gathered on Christmas Eve - Eric Powell, Mike Mignola, Becky Cloonan, and James Harren
Becky Cloonan's was the story that was nominated in this but unfortunately I didn't really care for it.
Spa - Erik Svetoft
This was hard for me to read because it is just body horror from start to finish. I think it runs a little long but as far as the horrors of capitalism and the tourism industry go it doesn't get much better than this.
JULY
The Most Costly Journey: Stories of Migrant Farmworkers in Vermont Drawn by New England Cartoonists
Really, really good cartooning and storytelling. Vermont is not really what you think of as the front lines of immigration but it's a farming community!
Green Arrow (1988) v1-9 by Mike Grell and others
Honestly the highlight of these for me is that the scans on (website redacted) maintain the letters pages! Grell's Green Arrow tackles a lot of capital I issues with mixed results but I do enjoy seeing the attempt. And it comes off a lot better than Batman comics of a similar vintage that attempt the same thing.
Robin (2021) v1-3 - Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov, and Roger Cruz
Honestly? Delightful. I love to see Damian come into himself and I love to see his cute little romance and I love to see him reading shoujo manga.
AUG
Are You Listening? - Tillie Walden
Tillie Walden always hits!
Hunter x Hunter v 1-13 - Yoshihiro Togashi
Sometimes you read 38 volumes of manga in two months after watching 130 episodes of the show and listening to hundreds of hours of podcast about it. And that's just what HxH does to you. It's normal, and fine.
The Yakuza’s Bias v2 - Teki Yatsuda
The bones of the premise are starting to show - I think this really would have been better as a single volume. Still very charming but probably not gonna pick up any third volume.
The Boy Wonder (as it came out) - Juni Ba
BOY WONDER COMIC OF ALL TIME! Wonderful take on Damian wonderful art wonderful Al Ghuls.
SEPT
The Summer Hikaru Died v2 - Mokumokuren
Hunter x Hunter v13-38 - Yoshihiro Togashi
OCT
The Concierge At Hokkyoku Department Store, v1 - Tsuchika Nishimura
What if working retail was not a horror show but was instead deeply fulfilling for everyone involved? This can only happen in a world where the customers are animals.
NOV
Iris: A Novel for Viewers - Lo Hartog van Banda and Thé Tjong-Khing
The gender of this is kind of crazy (derogatory) and it could not more clearly be from the 60s. I don't think I'd recommend it but I don't regret reading it as like, a historical document.
Space Mullet - Daniel Warren Johnson
DWJ really doesn't miss. This is a very classic grungy space noir in the vein of a Cowboy Bebop or an Expanse but I liked it quite a bit despite being made to feel sympathetic for a space Marine.
DEC
Nightwing (1996) v1-3 - Chuck Dixon and Scott McDaniel
Flush! Those! Blood pressure! Meds! Is Nightwing 96 a good comic? Who can say. Babs is there and Dick Grayson is experiencing the full spectrum of human emotion deep in his #failgirl 20s so I'm having a great time.

With all my heart I desire.
by xuejigeng A giveaway fic for xuanzens. Jiang Xichen, despite being the heir of Yunmeng Jiang, more so, the sect leader after Sunshot Campaign, opted to personally brew soups filled to the brim with fragrant ingredients special to their sect and nourishing meals for Lan Wanyin, given his Shizun’s weak constitution. He chose to seek out his Shizun at odd times of the day, settling next to his Shizun who tended to his own plants, to his own activities of sewing, knitting, or woodcarving, instead of going out to the town guarded by Lotus Pier with his shidi, Wei Wuxian for a bout of fun time. He’s never even seen Jiang Xichen look in the direction of a teahouse whose interior offered far more than its exterior. Lan Wanyin knew Jiang Xichen sought his approval all the time. He knew how hard the boy worked in order to get his approval. He’s seen how Jiang Xichen opted to continue training at the training grounds rather than joining his fellow sectmates in playing in the lakes under the hot sun. @evilminji , may I recommend the webcomic '50 Tea Recipes with the Dutchess' on Tapas? That comic taught me so much about tea!
I suspect the second floor of the Zone is an actual teahouse. (Lunch Lady is in charge of that area most of the time. She came up with a menu of tea refreshments that are Alfred Approved! She is THRIVING. Danny is also getting asked if he ships this stuff, so he puts Boxy in charge of that.) Danny also regularly hosts tea classes, where he teaches about how to brew a proper cup of tea. The Rogues are regular customers of his- especially Mad Hatter and Penguin (Ozzie orders from Danny in bulk- the Iceberg Lounge has several new tea cocktails on the menu). With the Bats coming around regularly? The Zone and the area around it has become a de-facto truce area between the two factions. So when Joker threatens it, he is quickly tackled by the tag team of both Red Hood and Killer Croc (the Sirens dragged him there once, and he ended up meeting his now-girlfriend Dorathea there. They regularly have dates at the teahouse. Hood was there because it calms the Pit for some reason.)
Okay, so maybe it's just me? Projecting my new Tea Phase?
Cause for med reasons, no more energy drinks, only Teeeeeeaaaaa~☆
But honestly? Now that I am an adult and ACTUALLY KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT? Really digging it! Am enjoying the Teas. Mmmmmmm~ leaf broth. I like the fruity ones.
So! IMAGINE~☆ If you will:
Danny. 14 and his parents are LOUD AS FUCK (CRASH BANG SMASH BANG WHIIII-) dispite it being, once again, a school night. This has been going one For Years. That STUPID fucking machine. All God damned hours. Crashes and bangs and powertools. Explosions.
When will it ever end!
He's... he's honestly used it.
Unknowingly? This is is a skill that will come in handy later. Living and functioning while sleep deprived. Healthy? Fuck no. But it's USEFUL. He IS the ten year old downing Monster drinks in the parking lot before school.
It makes him a jittery weirdo. Twitchy. Too much caffeine, not enough sleep, his parents either blew up or TOOK APART the washing machine AGAIN. He... he never stood a chance. It's a miracle the indoor plumbing hasn't been compromised yet... AGAIN.
His blood is more sugar, caffeine, and guarana or whatever those other things in the can are, then actual human blood. He doesn't CARE. He just needs too get decent grades, graduate, and become an astronaut. It's... it's FINE. This is normal. They're FINE.
(If they weren't... someone would have noticed, right? Would have DONE something. Cared. So it HAS to be fine. His family's just weird. It's FINE.)
But THEN...
The Accident.
And his biology CHANGES. Green goo, wrapped vicious and loving, around his very DNA. Like Kintsugi of the body and soul. In green, Green, GREEN. It... it's a lot. Everything changing all at once. Maybe that's why it takes him so long to notice.
Why he thinks "oh, I'm just tired cause I'm running more then usual. Fighting and flying. Doing ghost stuff."
When... when honestly? Some part of him always kinda KNEW. From the very moment he stumbled out of the portal. The aftershocks. The pain. Sam and Tucker crying, scrambling to help him up the stairs. Sam tearing her bag apart looking for her cramps medicine. Because... because pain medication is pain medication.
"It's gonna be okay, Danny. Please. Please god, just take it! I promise it's gonna be okay!"
How do you look your panicked, crying, strongest-person-you-know best friend in the eyes and tell her... you can FEEL it dissolving in your throat. Like the pills were dumped in a human shaped pot of acid. That... that the pain isn't changing... and you... you don't think it's going too.
When you're scared. Might be dying. And you can already tell they think it's their fault. W... when you're all just KIDS. And all you can think is... you can let them know how bad... how bad it hurts...
They'd never be able to live with that knowledge.
Yeah. Yeah, Sam. Thanks. T... The pills helped a lot. He feels better. You really saved the day. He lo... loves you guys so much.
...
.....
He thinks about that moment A LOT. About how much he realized and knew, before the denial kicked in. Before he got so... Tired. Fresh of all that energy. And? You'd think he realize. The mood swings. The irritability. The headaches that disappear the SECOND he goes ghost. That he's in caffeine withdrawal. But? Nope.
He kinda blames the constant ghost attacks for distracting him.
But see... Sam? Doesn't drink tea. Goes against her diet. Tucker was where he GOT his illicit borderline illegal energy drinks. And his sister? Big on flavored sparkling waters. Which are gross to him.
His PARENTS drink a thick tar they insist is coffee. It might be liquid fudge. Zone knows its nearly the same consistency. It's horrifying. No thanks, he wants to LIVE.
It's? Ironically? Mr. Lancer and his constant detentions, that help Danny realize somethings up. Because Mr. Lancer shares. If he makes a cup for himself, he'll make one for you. It's how he was raised. And, yeah, the after school detentions? Those were herbal blends. No caffeine.
But...
But they tasted nice. Were warm. The classroom was quiet and as frustrating as it was? The tea itself? Was always... the one exception to how shit the situation was. So Danny finally broke down and asked about it. Learned Mr. Lancer knew a? Surprisingly LOT about tea. Huh.
Then one day he gets SATURDAY detention. Oh joy!
Bright and early. One of the few times he could be trying, desperately, to be sleeping through his parents cacophony. Catching up on his desperately needed Zzz's. Here he is... getting a handed a new cup of different tea?
Breakfast blend? And a bagel..
N...none hostile breakfast? A quiet space to catch up on his homework? No Dash? Just... just a quiet classroom, some tea, and the sounds on a peaceful morning outside?
......oh.
It's the best time he's had in school in... God, in YEARS. He gets so MUCH done. For once can concentrate. And? Actually, now that he thinks about it? Feels... awake? Or at the very least, not as sleepy. And being a Fenton, whom to the LAST are a genius if eccentric family, it's pretty damn easy to put two and two together.
Tea.
He felt more awake after having Lancer's breakfast blend tea.
He obviously asks about it. Then, after detention is done. Calm packs up. Goes home. Drops his back in his room. Goes ghost. And SHOOTS for the Far Frozen with his phone and an energy drink. Because clearly he's missing something and it's time to ask.
The good doctors of the Frozen are... gently horrified. Clawed hands steeples infront of their mouths as they try to tactfully figure out how to word "Great One, WHAT THE FUCK!?!? Why would you DO THIS TO YOURSELF!?" Because that... is not professional. Breathe. In, out, in, out. We can do this.
They get the most patient and restrained of their elders to... CALMLY, very VERY Calmly, ask some medical questions. Listen. Without judgements! Because they are medical professionals. Who do NOT want to scream, forever, into the void. Certainly not. So Calm! (They are going to BURN THAT CAN IN-)
Which! Huh. Yeah, that explains the constant exhaustion. He was poisoning himself. Kinda. Not so much the GHOST but the human half. Putting to much strain and too much trace chemicals, minerals, and buckets of sugar. General "mmmm :/ Don't Like THAT ™" energy from the Goo causing it too try and constantly burning it all out of existence. Endlessly.
The more he put in, the more there was to burn. The more there was to burn, the more tired he became. The more tired he became... well, the more he put in. It was a slowly lethal starvation cycle. Big Yikes.
The TEA on the other hand? Those are leaves. The good recognizes leaves and water. Other various plants, dried or otherwise. It ignores them as "fine" until they reach a "problematic" threshold, apparently? So... *blank look at the doctor*
*sighs in medical professional*
Tea? Good. Satan Can of Halfa Poison? Bad. Please drink tea.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
And it's like MAGIC. He's suddenly BACK, baby! Ha ha ha! Skulker you fuckin THOUGHT?! Oh it's 2am? Well SUPRISE bitch! He's bright eyed and bushy tailed! His grades are up AND he's beating you like a drum! He has ice breakers for old people discussions now!! The local Tea Shops have NEVER been so well protected.
He actually manages to graduate with not just decent grades? But GOOD ones.
And the second. The INSTANT. He is legally his own man? Has his important paperwork squirrelled away and the go bags safely WELL outside of Amity. It's time. He meets OUTSIDE the house, because he's not an idiot. He's been practicing his Clones and has them ready to grab his parents so he can get out of there alive. Jazz is on video call from Star city.
His parents... suspected. Not at first, but as goofy as they are? They aren't ACTUALLY idiots. They've been watching, going over old research. Trying, failing, to get in touch with the League to have THEIR team test their research. Peer review is critical after all. They... they had been so certain. Are still somewhat certain.
But their research doesn't exactly ACCOUNT for this "halfa" phenomenon. So, there is a very real chance they are missing something. The one thing the DO know? Danny is their son. Stuck in some eternal mortally wounded state or not, he is a hero. And they weren't there for him.
They can't change their beliefs on a dime. But they've clearly missed a great deal. And refuse to fall to academic bias. The very thing that got them LAUGHED AT for decades. Mocked and belittled. This is their life's work. By God they WILL find out the truth.
It's? Better then he could have hoped. Not perfect. But better.
He helps set up safeties and a security check point at the portal. Both sides. He's kinda a big deal these days, mom, dad. Ghost scientists eager to work with them. A whole TEAM under their command. It certain endears ghosts to them a whole lot more. Then?
Copy of the blue prints, go bag turned into normal bags, Danny's off to college.
Bounces from major to major. Nothing really capturing his interest. As he aged, he's need less sleep. Gotten stronger. Grown into his father's height and grandfathers build. Tucker keeps calling him a dorito. Danny retaliates with Ancient Egyptian Cyber/Pharoah Twink allegations. According to SAM they are both dumbasses.
She's not WRONG... but hey D:<
Eventually? A really niche botany seminar run by Pamela Isely catches the attention of Tucker, who forwards it to him n Sam. Nice ™. It's being held in her Murder Park! Cool! Obviously they have to go. So off to Gotham they go. And? When they get there? Sam is APPALLED.
She may HATE landlords as much as the next activist.... but LOOK at all these run down, foreclosed, rotting buildings! Beautiful gothic infrastructure! Those could be businesses or homes! Danny, busy with signing them up, makes the mistake of tuning her out as she rants in fury. She does this some times. Needs to vent. Uh huh, you're very right. You should contact somebody. I agree. Mmmhmmm.
Hey, Sam, Ms. Isely needs your-....
Sam?
Oh FUCK ™.
By the time the Seminar come around? Sam has violently kicked in the door of more then a feel reality offices. Owns QUITE a few buildings. Danny is sweating. She... she's doing the THING again. The "gimme your Ghost Crew, I KNOW you have a highly specific Ghost Crew, don't you DARE lie to me or I take your knee caps, Danny" stare.
>.> Sam you can't keep doin- *stare intensifies* Yes Ma'am. *Pulls out Fenton phone* and so? Here come the renovation crew. The ONLY honest building Crew in all of Gotham. They cut no corners. Can't be threatened. Gangs, villians, and even local government office try to arrange... accidents on the build sites.
Nothing. Nada. In fact, it turns out more dangerous for THEM then this crew of outsiders!
Wtf!
Then? After these two College age weirdos finish Poison Fuckin Ivys HIGHLY SUSPECT biology seminar? Manson fucks off to who knows where! Leaving what HAS to be "the muscle" behind. Cause I mean? Look, at the guy! He's huge! And what does he do?
Goes building to building. Rents them out to low income families. Honest, hard working shop keepers. And? Eventually decides to settle smack dab in the middle of Gotham, in the shadow of Wayne fuckin tower, spitting distance from the Space museum..... and open? A tea shop? The FUCK?
"The Zone".
In a weird shade of green. With little ghosts, wearing crowns, because and I quote "it's funny"? Certainly crazy enough for Gotham. But like, it's loud as FUCK here. Crowded. There are gas attacks and shit. It'll never las-....
It stays untouched for MONTHS.
Sometimes being the ONLY building near it to be untouched. Gas NEVER getting in. The damn place a BUNKER. And? Despite looking like it's two floors? It's three. You enter and your actually on the second floor. No one's even sure where the fuck the guy LIVES, since he never seems to leave.
Not only THAT. But it... it's like one of those old school apothecaries. Big ol bank of drawers. Guy'll mix up your blend for you right as you watch. Tea nuts are actually risking COMING to Gotham to try his stuff. Writing articles. Apparently he has some pretty rare shit in those drawers.
Some UNKNOWN shit, according to one guy on ViewTube.
There's this whole debate on if it's Ultra Super Rare or that means it's just super cheap knock off crap. Some of them he won't make for people, even if they ask. There's a rumor it's for Meta's with specific diets. Or alien blends. But no one can verify that. Cause like?
Anyone who tries to cause trouble?
Can't fucking FIND the place. And if you're already inside? You just... drop. Stone cold unconscious. It's definitely magic but no one knows if it's HIS or Manson's? You know? He won't talk. Gets annoyed when harrased.
Which off course!
Leaves Only ONE gentleman for the job. An elite special forces trained expert. Polite, dignified, enjoyer of fine Teas. Alfred "Why do you chucklefucks keep forgetting I was in the Queens Service and a Registered Badass" Pennyworth.
After all! He DOES have the days shopping to do.

Favourite Webcomics So Far
1. Starfighter by HamletMachine
Tumblr media
“Set in an undetermined date in the future, a space station houses a starfighter fleet, each ship manned by a fighter and a navigator. Navigator Abel is assigned to the notorious fighter Cain, who kicks off their partnership by permanently scarring Abel to mark him as his property, then threatening him. Forced together by circumstance and military command, Abel does his best to be a professional partner and navigator to loose-cannon Cain, while entering into a brutal, messy relationship with him even as hints arise that Cain is even more dangerous than he appears.”
2. Crushed!! by Yaa
Tumblr media

3. Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu
Tumblr media
“Eric Bittle—former Georgia junior figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and amateur pâtissier—is starting his freshman year playing hockey at the prestigious Samwell University in Samwell, Massachusetts. And it’s basically nothing like co-ed club hockey back in the South. For one?
There’s checking.
It’s a story about hockey and friendship and bros and trying to find yourself during the best 4 years of your life.”
4. Always Raining Here by Hazel & Bell
Tumblr media
“Adrian is heartsick, Carter is horny. This is a story about their misadventures as awkward teenagers as they fumble through unrequited romances.”

Tumblr media
“Iris is a young man with the gift to bring pieces of artwork into reality. 5 years into an apocalyptic outbreak, he's holed up in a lab that shelters "problem" children. 8. Transfusions by Anni K.
Tumblr media
“It's a story about young media student Dylan and vampire Joa, who died in the 80's. Despite the rough start with threatening and snarking their relationship will develop from cute awkwardness to a beautiful romance.“
9. Victim. Gate of Spirits by Zombie Cinnamon Coffee
Tumblr media
“It is a yaoi (BL) webcomic about people, who live close to the swamp. We draw it because we love stories about fantasy, undeads, ancient mysteries and BL... If you also like it, we hope you'll have a good time!“
10. Breaks by Emma Vieceli & Malin Ryden
Tumblr media
“Everyone wears a mask. What we see of people on the surface is so rarely what’s ticking underneath. And, in Cortland Hunt’s case, what he’s hiding might just be more than Ian Tanner is prepared for.Breaks is the story of two young adults coming to terms with who they were, who they are and who they’ll become.
It’s a love story…but a little broken.”

Today’s To Do List:
-re-read Teahouse (have y’all heard of this webcomic? Sadly it was discontinued but it is the MOST BEAUTIFUL webcomic about a super fancy gay brothel. Also there is some politics. All the characters are balls-to-the-wall beautiful)
-Catch up on Unsounded (webcomic by Ashley Cope and it is BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING and just the artstyle is bonkers good, and from what I recall it updates pretty fast? Don’t know if it’s still GOING GOING but like. It’s worth it for the art alone. The story is a fantasy with SO MUCH COOL SHIT I can’t even)
Yesterday’s To Do List:
-Finish Starfighter (This one’s probably more popular around here, since it’s by @hamletmachine who’s on tumblr :) Amazing Sci Fi gay love story about PILOTS and INTRIGUE and SPACE. Recently finished, and there’s a GAME TOO???? I need to check that out. Maybe that’ll be my to-do list tomorrow)

So, I admit I am old. Not that old, but old. So here's my list of webcomics.
Webcomic: The pirate Balthazar
Author: Dedasaur
Link: https://thepiratebalthasar.blogspot.com/
Status: Complete - several spinoffs complete and ongoing
Synopsis: the infamed Pirate Balthazar is in need of a wife. He meets her, but he kidnaps her other 4 identical twin sisters. Chaos ensues.
Genre: historical fantasy
Comments: I absolutely adore this webcomic. The slides are available on nTapas, Deviantart and they can be downloaded for free as PDFs, so you can read them anywhere at any time. Language is both English and Italian. The author is an artist and art teacher in Singapore, if I remember correctly. Please check her other webcomics too, in particular "The Mark of Cain".
Webcomic: The Gardener
Author: Marc G
Link: https://thegardener-comic.com/
Status: ongoing
Synopsis: Ambrose Archibald, a young wealthy and refined man, retired to his family mansion to recover of some health issues. There, he spends some peaceful days until he meets Leo, the gardener in charge of the domain. Ambrose then faces a man that is nothing like him but who will kindle a strange sentiment in him.
Genre: Comedy, queer
Comments: 20something years old me was craving webcomics and I followed the link from a different webcomic. It is such a fun reading, full of second-hand embarassment and cheesy romance tropes, but they WORK!
Webcomic: Spectre
Author: the Avenier Brothers https://www.avenier.org/
Link: https://archive.org/details/Spectre-webcomic-online
Status: incomplete (?)
Synopsis: this is horror/thriller set in a dystopian universe where machines have triumphed over nature.
Genre: Horror, queer
Comments: I don't think the actual website is still up - maybe the two authors took it down. I believe it was left as incomplete, but Marcus and Felix Avenier have Patreon, so maybe it is back there. A warning: this is not for the faint of heart, their style is whatever the opposite of vanilla is, so yeah.
Webcomic: Starfighter
Author: HamletMachine
Link: http://starfightercomic.com/
Status: complete
Synopsis: we are talking about fighting a war in space against aliens. the most competent fighter, Cain, gets a new navigator, Abel.
Genre: Scifi, action, queer
Comments: again, this is not exactly vanilla, but the storyline is very interesting. There is a game and there is a soundtrack, it is a lot. Highly recommended.
Webcomic: Romantically apocalyptic
Author: Vitaly S Alexius
Link: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/56990/romantically-apocalyptic-webcomic
Status: ongoing
Synopsis: Charles Snippy finds himself lost and alone at the end of the world. He makes a wish for a friend and meets Zee Captain, an eccentric lunatic luminary, who drags him on an adventure through the eldritch, deadly, questionable and limitless post-apocalyptic world of tomorrow, a place where Goodness makes the rules and everything has purpose and passion.
Genre: Scifi, action, queer
Comments: I can't really describe this. It is an Experience(C), the whole comic is done in mixed media ranging from traditional art to digital, to animantion, to realism. It's definitely worth reading <3
Webcomic: the teahouse
Author: Emirain
Link: https://www.comic-rocket.com/read/teahouse/1
Status: incomplete
Synopsis: it's about a teahouse/brothel, their workers and their clientele.
Genre: victorian fantasy
Comments: I remember being very heartbroken when it was left as incomplete, but Emirain did put the full synopsis that would go into detail as to how they were planning to end the webcomic.
Webcomic: A broken Winter
Author: Kale Night
Link: http://www.abrokenwinter.com/index.html
Status: ongoing (?)
Synopsis: I admit I have not read the whole4 thing in a long time, but I remember parts of it.
Genre: dystopia, scifi, fantasy, queer
Comments: I don't remember a lot of this one, but I remember being captivated. It is very angst.
Webcomic: The Ferrin
Author: @unusualjuggernaut
Link: http://theferrin.com/
Status: complete
Synopsis: The main character finds a creature, a ferrin. I have to reread the whole thing, but I love the art and the storyline.
Genre: scifi
Comments: another one I have to reread :p
Webcomic: Lucky Penny
Author: Yuko Ota & Ananth Hirsh
Link: https://johnnywander.com/
Status: complete
Synopsis: I admit I haven't checked them in a while, sorry, but they managed to publish the comic and I am happy for them
Genre: slices of life, comedy
Comments: another one I have to reread :p
And that's about everything, hope you enjoy these <3

Note
dude im just
hanging on
i was reading the tyrants guardian is an evil witch but i hope to GOD that the male lead isnt the person she raised I AM BEGGING OML PLEASE JUST MAKE HIM REALISE ITS FILIAL LOVE HES EXPERIENCING NOT ROMANTIC IM HANGING ONTO THAT HOPE- 😭😭😭😭😭😭
You know if Freud could time travel, he really would have a blast in the modern age.
I know this isn't suppose to be taken super seriously - but I received it during work hours and since I couldn't take time off to reply to it instantly, I spent too much time thinking about it. I went on an introspective journey and I just- gotta put it somewhere else it'll echo in my brainchambers for too long.
but tl;dr and short answer: your gut feeling is probably right. if it makes you uncomfortable it’s alright to move on.
Tumblr media
if you guys are still here and reading, welcome to the teahouse - I appreciate your curiosity in learning about my 3am thoughts - obviously everything written next is of my own opinion and everyone is welcome to pitch in with their own arguments and opinions.
My first reaction to this ask was pretty much the same as you anon. I actually have read through a bit of “Tyrants Guardian is an Evil Witch” and once there were hints of it the MC falling for his guardian, I pretty much stopped reading. Family is incredibly important to me, and the relationship I share with my family is on another level, I just can’t imagine or invest myself fully in any scenario where familial love turns into romantic love. It is also one of the reason why FEFates flopped for me as well (look nintendo, if you’re going to introduce them as my siblings, I’m not going to start drooling over their tiddies even after you reveal that there’s no blood relationship between MU and them). It wouldn’t be the first time a webcomic turned the tables on me 50+ chapters in when I’m fully invested in the characters and plot (*cough cough* Beware of the Brothers *cough cough*) and unfortunately, I have to put them down after a while because I just can’t get over the sense of discomfort it caused.
Which made me think- why am I feeling uncomfortable?
Many of these stories/comics/manga that tread the line (poorly) of romantic relationships between families often use the plot armor: “Not related by blood!” Theoretically, if family is only determined by blood relationship, then that plot armor would definitely be an all invincible armor and I should be appeased by that reasoning. But more often than not, I’m not convinced-
And that’s because the concept of family is a social construct. Naming relationships between one another is a thing that is only done by human species. Categorising them into a ‘family’ also a thing made and done by humans. The concept of ‘family’ has evolved through the years to not just include your typical nuclear family but also same sex families, single parents, adopted families, etc. The concept of family is much more of an emotional and cultural societal thing than it is about science.
But if at the end of the day, if it’s an emotional connection that binds one another as a ‘family’, then aside from health concerns of the next generation from blood related incestuous relationships (in that case, strict birth control will help eliminate that risk), if we remove all labels and look at the bare bones of a situation, what we have is just two people who love each other (keeping in mind, I’m talking about consensual adults in a relationship.).
Emotionally and culturally, I’m conditioned to find romantic relationships between family weird. Regardless of whether or not they share blood between them or not.
Logically, it shouldn’t be any different from any other normal relationships that aren’t the nuclear family model. It’s not like we’ve never heard of 40 year age gap marriages or adopted siblings relationships.
Honestly, at the end of the day, if they’re not harming others, not harming me, they can do their own thing. I’ll still find it uncomfortable and if it’s a story I’m reading, I can just move on.
And if someone I know came out to me about this? well. they’ll have to know i’ll find it weird but I’ll at least try my best to change my thoughts on it.
please share your thoughts on the matter.
