Young Entrepreneur in the Book Publishing Industry - Divya Trivedi
Divya Trivedi is the Founder and CEO of Kitab Writing Publication. Her hobbies are writing, singing, and cycling. She eventually started her writing journey on 9th November 2020. And she published her first book titled "The beauty of quotes" on 4th of April 2021. As a writer, Divya Trivedi was always curious about how publishing companies are printing and listing the books. Like the processes behind it, what makes a publication at best, the processes of start-up, what kind of impact it creates in the reader’s community, etc.
After learning and getting to know everything one by one, she decided to start her publication, not for anything else but just to Spread Goodness Spread Happiness around the world through books. And she also started working under publications from 10th of May 2021. Divya Trivedi's dream was to Spread Goodness and Spread Happiness. That's why she started a publication named SGSH Publication. SGSH publication was started on 30th October 2021 founded by Miss Divya Trivedi. She worked really hard to establish a well-known publication with a good mission like SGSH but later she realised publication is a business and in business sometimes we have to be strict, we have to be bold, we have to say Truth. But with SGSH name she was uncomfortable working in publication so she decided to Change the SGSH Publication to Kitab Writing Publication on 4th of March 2023. Till now, she has published 300+ solo books, 200+ anthologies and 1000+ books printed by her publication which is not possible without her constant and dedicated efforts from her side. Divya Trivedi aims no matter what always stay real and honest with customers. She wants to achieve this only with sincerity, honesty, and hard Work. She knows there are thousands of Publications, many even at top positions, but for Kitab Writing Publication she aims not just to provide publishing services but also she tries to provide writers Motivation and to Spread Truth. She is following one of her quotes "Pain also gives you pleasure when you love what you are doing."
She has recently been awarded multiple and prestigious titles mentioned below:

2. National book of records
3. Fastest growing publication in 2023 from World wide book of records

She publishes books and anthologies. Her publication is unique because of her Honesty, Hard Work and consistent efforts. In her opinion, earning money from the business is a little easy but when she has authors coming to her again and approaching her to publish their write-ups with full happiness and satisfaction is what makes her unique. Each of her team members are very happy to work. More than a work and for money, they too are inspired by the mission of the publication and work for that. So not just the founder herself but every last member of her team is working for the same motto and writers are happy. She just sees this publication as the Best Publication in this world and also she sees herself as a Best Motivational Speaker for writers and Best Entrepreneur in the world. With her constant dedication she is going to reach the skies beyond the limit with flying colors. Her journey was a bit up and down, but setting up this publication is one of the best choices she have ever made.

World Science Festival Brisbane
Provocation
Project for World Science Festival Brisbane
Unpacking the provocation
Outline your initial impressions and thoughts around the provocation (Please note this is not about outlining ideas, rather about identifying impressions, interests and possible opportunities to explore).
After the presentation by Sally McRae for the World Science Festival Brisbane, it is clear that the festival has been successful in attracting a wide range of audiences as a result of their extensive variety of exhibitions and attractions. World Science Festival Brisbane has grown to be a well-established annual event whose vision is shared and supported by the Queensland Government. It has become a major tourism drawcard bringing in millions into the state’s economy as it celebrates creativity, innovation, science, technology and art in Queensland (WSFB, 2020). The festival itself lends access to audiences with little interest in science and art as well as audiences passionate about science and art. Throughout the provocation, it was evident that the festival aimed to develop their reception towards the young adult audiences predominately adults around 18-25 years old (McRae, 2020).
Sally seemed to be very interested in attracting the audience through means that are outside of the regular screen and to use technology that is more immersive and engaging e.g. VR, AR or online gaming. She was also interested in the idea of collaborating with global partners to celebrate natural events around the world e.g. earth hour, comet sightings, interactive satellite imagery. The hopes that were drawn out of the provocation towards WSFB were that they aim to deliver a different form of the festival rather than scaling it down and were also passionate about having sustainability at the forefront of it all (McRae, 2020).
As WSFB encompasses a wide variety of science and art exhibitions, we as a group were excited to find out which area we wanted to develop and build upon. There is an obvious draw to bring the festival on an online platform but we as a team were more interested in how we could accommodate a physical celebration within the limitations and scope of the situation with COVID-19.

Contextual information about the Partner
Write a short statement outlining what the industry partner does.
WSF Brisbane is a production of the World Science Foundation who are a not-for-profit organisation headquartered in New York City. Each year the World Science Festival Brisbane takes science out of the laboratory and into the streets, parks, museums, galleries and performing arts venues of Brisbane and regional Queensland. The Festival brings some of the world’s greatest thought leaders to Queensland, showcase local scientists and performers from around the Asia Pacific region, and host the brightest and the best from previous events in New York (WSFB, 2020).
What sector does your industry partner work in?
WSFB is a festival presented by the Queensland Museum with generous support from their partners. Since the first annual festival in 2016, the event has grown to become a major tourism drawcard in its own right, attracting more than 700,000 visitors injecting more than $32 million into the state’s economy. It is one of the many highlights on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar, worth $880 million to the state’s economy in 2020 (WSFB, 2020).
Where and when does your industry partner operate?
The festival itself is held annually usually around March however it is assumed that WSFB and their partners would operate throughout the year in preparation. WSFB have grown to allow its festival and events to be held in many more regional areas within Queensland. The full list of cities involved in this year’s festival include Brisbane, Chinchilla, Gladstone, Toowoomba, Townsville and Ipswich (WSFB, 2020).

Key motivations, outcomes and engagement
Why does your industry partner do what they do?
World Science Festival Brisbane states in their FAQ’s page that their mission is to “…help create a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future” (WSFB, 2020). As such, we can understand that WSFB intends to use science to engage many parts of the community. Also, due to their use of practical events, we can understand that WSFB intend to create a space in which their varied audiences can interact with science in fun an engaging way.
What forms do their outcomes take? Analogue/digital? Performance, artefacts, exhibition, discussions etc.?
does your industry partner engage with their audience/clients/users?
WSFB outcomes take on all sorts of formats, however in the past, these formats have been primarily physical or analogue. Which presents an issue in COVID times as they want all their content to be accessible online. During the Provocation meeting, it was noted that all the online content that WSFB has produced in the past has not done as well as they wanted (McRae, 2020). In regards to their audience, there is a large focus to families and children, often lacking access to the young adult audience.
How do they engage with their audience/clients/users?
WSFB uses various social media outlets to engage with their audience. Between Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, Facebook is definitely the standout in regard to engagement which aligns with their local outreach and general audience demographics. As was discussed in the Provocation meeting, WSFB has also trialled live events on these sites and has often struggled with this as an engaging space (McRae, 2020). As well as this, WSFB also circulates analogue advertising across the city – flyers, banners, signs etc.
How is this engagement measured?
It can be understood that WSBF hopes that this engagement with audiences will present in outcomes of ticket sales, shows and venues selling out, crowds, and word of mouth. These are all very physical outcomes that WSFB is very comfortable with. For example, one event that WSFB had planned for the 2020 festival was Answers from the Ashes (WSFB, 2020), which was a talk that was set to be hosted at QPAC’s Concert Hall, a big prestigious venue that WSFB would only book if they were confident that their engagement would reflect in ticket sales.

Scope
Identify the scope of their work. How many people do they reach/engage/employ?
World Science Festival Brisbane is popular among children and typically engages a large family audience, along with attracting some curious adults and academics with an interest in science (McRae, 2020). In 2019 over 200,000 people attended the festival, with almost 300 participants, performers and activity providers also involved in the festival. WSFB enlists a number of guest speakers each year including scientists, astronauts, astrophysicists and a variety of professors. WSFB is also supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and Arts Queensland, alongside Queensland Museum Network and a number of other festival partners within the industry (WSFB, 2019).
How frequently do they run?
The World Science Festival originated in New York in 2008. Queensland is currently the only global extension of the festival, with the Brisbane event first appearing in March 2016 and running annually ever since. The Queensland Museum Network has exclusive licensing to host the World Science Festival in the Asia Pacific up until 2021 (WSFB, 2020).
Are there other ways to measure their scope?
Attendees and volunteers of WSFB in 2019 expressed that they were more excited and willing to learn about science, STEM and possible career pathways after attending the festival. Partners and participants collectively agreed that WSFB makes an important contribution in STEM engagement and learning (WSFB, 2019). WSFB encourages greater STEM participation from under-represented groups, with 86% of attendees from these groups indicating that their willingness to learn more about science increased after attending the festival (WSFB, 2019).

Key stakeholders
Identify your industry partner’s key audience/clients/users
Does your industry partner have any key investors/partners/collaborators?
The main audience of World Science Festival Brisbane is a wide range of age groups, including students, families, curious adults and seniors (McRae, 2020). In 2019, more than 7,100 students attended WSFB as part of a pre-planned school excursion (QMN, 2019). The 2019 program was held with 297 participants, activity providers and performers in six locations including Brisbane, Gladstone, Chinchilla, Toowoomba, Townsville and Ipswich. It has also collaborated with more than 30 partners from the government, academia and the private sector who have contributed $3 million in cash and in-kind donations (QMN, 2019). In addition to support from Queensland Museum Network and Queensland Government, WSFB collaborates with partners to build shared visions, clearly defined results, and relationships that are premised on measurable and rewarding impacts on STEM (WSFB, 2020).
Does your industry partner have links to the community?
WSFB hosts regional programs every year. The program offers a number of free events for all ages and aims to show the way to a future career by interacting with rural and remote communities (WSFB, 2020). For example, WSFB worked with their community partner, QGC, to provide an opportunity for local participation in the Queensland community in 2017. The program provided residents in and around Gladstone, Chinchilla with the opportunity to explore the wonders of science. This has allowed their community members to understand the mysteries of past and present environments to shape the future (Future Makers, 2020).

Mapping the context
What is the broader field that your partner works within?
The content presented in The World Science Festival is key focused upon intertwining modern science with fun forms of education. These broader fields are executed through the use of creative practice.
What are the key ideas, considerations and trends in their field?
The scientific field is constantly expanding, this gives the festival new content each year. With the trend of environmentalism growing, science based events (including World Science Festival) are targeting audiences with eco friendly activities.
The stereotypes surrounding science have impacted how the general public perceives events such as the world science festival. The trend of science being ‘boring’ or only ‘highbrow’ needs to be broken down in order to entice regular families; students or workers to participate.
Whereas the new methods to successfully involve target audiences through interactive education as a trend that greatly support the fun but education goal off these events.

https://www.worldsciencefestival.com.au/about/about-the-festival/
Investigate other creative interventions/projects
Is there anyone else working in the same area as the industry partner?
Within Australia there are numerous Science festivals that aim to excite and educate the general public. While The World Science Festival is the largest: Curiosity; Pint of Science and National Science Week run similar themed projects. Though the programs all aim to spread scientific interest they execute this objective in their own ways.
Are they doing anything different? Addressing different sectors? Using different forms? Can we learn or adopt anything from them?
For example, Pint of Science Week successfully targets an adult audience by partnering with beer breweries. Pint Of Science Week, uses this to entice attendees into fun but educational programs. This works because it draws in the intended audience and goes against the negative stereotypes of science events.
The World Science Festival could use this method by using something their target audience (18+) are already interested in to intertwine with the science theme. This would not only draw in people who are interested in science, but also those who enjoy the other element. An example of this would be to partner Science with film.
National Science Week provides an App that can track the science events in each area. Given the current global Covid 19 situation online usability and design is more important than ever. If The world Science Festival were to use an app to bring most of its content online, it would be modern, helpful and extremely adaptive to the times.

Key opportunities and challenges
Outline the potential opportunities and challenges identified in the provocation presentation.
There were a number of opportunities and challenges identified in the provocation presentation for the World Science Festival Brisbane. The greatest challenge outlined was maintaining audience attendance at the festival within the limitations of COVID-19. While outside gatherings are limited during this time, WSFB would ideally like to uphold the scale of the festival and present some outdoor events where possible (McRae, 2020). How international guests, panel discussions and workshops could remain incorporated in the festival are other concerns that come with the COVID-19 limitations. The solution to these challenges must also be affordable to accommodate the festival's reduced budget (McRae, 2020).
With the expectation of an online platform comes the opportunity of being accessible to a wider range of people, uniting and engaging audiences on a global level. This also provides an opportunity for the festival to expand their age demographic, specifically towards teenage and young adult audiences (McRae, 2020).

5 Leadership Lessons By M.S Dhoni For Success!
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the most brilliant captains in Indian cricket history. An outstanding batsman, an excellent wicket-keeper, and a powerful leader- “the captain cool” is famous not only for his calm and composed demeanor, but also for his power-packed batting style. When Virat Kohli was selected to lead the national cricket team of India, he made it clear that replacing Dhoni was not an easy task because Dhoni has left a remarkable legacy as a captain.
He has developed an extraordinary reputation for being one of the greatest leaders that the game of cricket has ever seen. He has shown that leadership is not just about passing out orders, but a sheer willingness to make tough decisions and go out of the way to achieve your designated goals.
Not just an extraordinary captain and leader, Dhoni also swiped many awards and bagged several records including the most wins by an Indian captain in Tests and One Day Internationals.
India won the 2007 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20, the Commonwealth Bank Series of 2007–08, the 2010 Asia Cup, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy under his captaincy.
His list of achievements is so long that we can write a book on that. But there is one amazing trait of our former Indian captain that deserves special mention is his leadership skills.
M.S. Dhoni has an arsenal of leadership skills that entrepreneurs can certainly apply both personally and professionally. Here are five incredible leadership traits that are a useful template for business captains too:
1. Stay Confident & Grounded
Confidence is the key to success and M.S Dhoni is the best example of that. Even though he comes from a very modest background, he never let that hold him back from achieving his dreams. On the field or off the field, Dhoni is always confident and forthright and often surprises his fans, audience, and media with his witty comments.
Staying true to yourself will not just take you aheadin the sporting world, but also in the corporate as well as the business world.
2. Stay Cool & Composed
M.S. Dhoni has earned the title of “Captain Cool” due to his calm and composed demeanor on the field even during nail-biting moments. Even when severely tested, he manages to not lose his temper which used to influence the entire team to resist caving in. He kept inspiring the team like the best motivational speaker to perform at par no matter what the situation is.
This is one of the most crucial leadership skills for entrepreneurs to keep calm and not give up when the situation is not in their favor.
3. Don’t Let Success Get Over Your Head
Dhoni received fame, name, and wealth at the very initial stage of his career. But he was and still is, humble and modest. He did not let the success get over his head while maintaining a steady path.
We often see that entrepreneurs who gain success too early often lose their focus and balance. They are unable to maintain the poise that is required for the business's success in the long run.
4. Don’t Lose Focus
To remain focused on your goals amidst all the criticism is no child’s play. But Dhoni showcased his indomitable spirit of remaining focused on what is important during the Champions Trophy amidst the controversy that surrounded the Indian Premier League.
An ability to cut through the clutter, distraction, and negative energy is one of the best marks of a strong leader in every situation. If you want to become a powerful leader, you can hire one of the best leadership speakers in India- Dr. Vivek Bindra.
5. Handling Failure
Handling failure is as important as handling success. And no one has ever done it better than the former Indian captain M.S Dhoni himself. In the 2011 World Cup, Dhoni and his team were performing spectacularly but then suffered a string of losses. However, the captain cool fought back by showcasing a world-class game of cricket combined with his high spirits.
Ups and downs are part of an entrepreneurial journey. Businesses tend to suffer some degree of failure at some point or the other. But, if you want to be successful, you will have to have the courage and strength to bounce back without losing faith in your dreams.
Entrepreneurs should feel safe to experiment and fail if they need to. Managers must also come to terms with the fact that no organization or department can achieve its goals without its respective team members.
M.S Dhoni is known not only for his famous ‘helicopter shot’ and his excellent class of game but also for his unmatched leadership skills and team spirit. Young entrepreneurs can learn big lessons from him about how resilience and focus can help their businesses to grow.

There are moments in life, that you have dreamt about for years. Doing a TEDx talk and becoming part of the inspiring global TED community was one of them. And then, as the saying goes, "Life is what happens, while you are busy making other plans".
Whilst I could prepare the message of the talk, I was unable to deliver it in the way I had pictured it. After I have agonized until today about whether I should share the experience and message or not, I decided to post about it anyway.
Although after several attempts I had to use my notes to deliver the talk, although neither mentally nor physically I was feeling at ease that day, I stand by my decision to go forward with the talk on that day and not cancel.
Despite the subpar performance, the message is much bigger than these 18 min, bigger than my personal failure, bigger than my individual limited lifetime. It`s about human community and how we can all come together to protect the ocean. Thank you dear TEDx UniMannheim team for inviting me on 10th October to "Perfectly Imperfect" and showing such understanding, compassion and support.
Thank you to the other speakers, who cheered me on that day, especially Gigi. And thank you to my brothers, who showered me with positive energy as always are also responsible for the best gift I have ever received - my spirit animal Totoro, who of course was also with me on the red carpet.
Here is the video, in case you want to watch it. Unfortunatly due to technical glitches the quality is not so good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoeefnFIlN4 Below is the complete text of the talk. I hope I can bring the message across this way. #
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is allowed to save the ocean?
Good afternoon everyone, for the duration of the talk, I want you, dear audience, to imagine that you are the ocean:
You are vast, beautiful, strong. You are home to around 70% of all life on earth. You are mysterious - 91% of ocean species, your children, are unknown to humanity. You cover 71% of the Earth’s surface. You are the cradle of existence, life began in you, around 3 billion years ago. Thanks to YOU, all life on Earth can breathe and exist.
Oh what's that, you feel unwell? Climate change is making you warmer, rise up, acidic.Humans are polluting you with plastics, noise and chemicals.Your children, the plants and animals, are being captured, killed andencaged.
How can you be set free from these worries and problems? How can you feel secure and happy? So you need help, right?Who will rescue you?Aliens? Cats? Or maybe – Batman?Jokes aside. The pain you are suffering is caused by humans. So it would have to be one of them who decides to come to your rescue. So a human then.Who would you like to be saved by?How would they look?Does it even matter?Chances are, the only ones that will show up for your rescue, no matter what your answer is, are white humans, most likely men.
So you wonder, dear ocean, what happened to the rest?Weren't they motivated enough to help you?Let me explain to you, why they could not show up:When humans hear the word „human“, the first thing that comes to their minds is a white man, or a white person.White people are what is seen as the standard, the norm.Search Google for „marine conservationist“, and images of mostly white people pop up.Yet, Earth currently accommodates 7.8 billion people, of which nearly two-thirds live in Asia and 17% in Africa.
Biodiversity, which is linked to the health of ecosystems, is something that human conservationists focus on.But human diversity itself is missing. How can humans acknowledge the worth of other beings, if they fail to do so in each other? These “other” humans want to help you too, dear ocean, but it will take them longer to get to you.
Let's imagine, being able to protect you, is a prize at the end of a game.I know, don‘t blush, it is very flattering. When I was little, my family used to play a game called „snakes andladders“.It's a game where there are ladders that help you to advance faster, and snakes that slow you down.Whoever makes it to the end of the playing field, dear ocean, as weassume in this case, can contribute to your rescue.
The game stands for the ups and downs of my life:My quest to marine conservation, the struggles in terms of women's rights and racism, as an example for a Woman of Color.I also explore systemic obstacles Women of Color are more likely to face when they want to protect you.You will see, dear ocean, how everything is connected and why a large portion of humanity currently cannot come to your rescue.BTW, I love snakes, so please, dear snakes, don`t take it personally that you are playing the villain in this scenario.
My parents fled Sri Lanka in 1983 because of the Tamil genocide. The snake was already rearing its head. They ended up in a refugee camp in Germany. That is when I was born. And then later, my two brothers. In the picturesque village in Southern Germany we moved to and called home, our family didn't have the privilege to be treated as favorably as the only two other things that were named Black – the Black Forest and the Black Forest cake.
Although there were people who welcomed us warm heartedly, I will never forget being called the N- word for the first time, which was when I was still in kindergarten. My father did what he could do to make a living, working night shifts in a factory and my mother cleaned houses, and mostly stayed home. They knew, education was the only currency that could make a future for us children in a foreign country. So they told us to work extra hard.
Growing up in a very conservative family, as the eldest and onlydaughter of a Tamil household, I was constantly shifting between the outer German and the Tamil world. In the outer world, in school, I was the outsider.Being the only person of color at the whole school, until my brothers later joined me, some classmates made racist jokes within earshot.
At home, I realized that a Tamil girl is expected to behave very differently from a German girl:Whilst other teenagers talked about love, I was to sit still at functions where relatives came over to ask when I was ready for arranged marriage. It was at home where my fight for women's rights began – fighting for my own freedom.
Fast forward to university, in a bigger city. One day, I was out, waiting alone for the tram at night.Suddently, several Nazis started to throw beer bottles at me.They yelled: „Tomorrow the headline of the newspaper will read ‚A dead n- b- found cut up in a trash can‘“.I survived because I ran for my life.
Yes, dear ocean, that is scary.Recently I watched Lovecraft Country, a show that is a take on H.P.Lovecraft (a brillliant writer) and racism. The author, Misha Green, mentioned that „being an ‘other’ in this world, you’re walking around in a horror movie at all times, you’re always on the edge, wondering when the monster is going to jump out and get you.“This is exactly how I feel – the exhaustion of always having to fightagainst racism, it never stops.
In 2004, I enrolled at another university – the very university that has invited me to speak today, my alma mater, the University of Mannheim. Here, I heard about "Gender Studies" for the first time through a female professor, who became my mentor.About the same time, I joined a women's association. And it was here I learnt about the importance of who can and cannot ask questions in academia and politics- questions that then become the basis of what „we“ should „know“ about how the world works. The male gaze, who decides on what is important, while the rest of the world is willingly ignored.I became aware of how I was part of the fate that millions of girls and women face.
These women, in academia and the political sphere, were the ones who helped me climb the long ladder of knowledge and consciousness in the fields of gender and racism.Of course the snakes were around:E.g. I struggled to make ends meet, had to take up student loans and juggle several jobs.Once I explained to a political science professor that I was unable to participate in group work every evening of the week because I had to work, he replied: „You should not study if you can't afford it.“
So, dear ocean, where exactly do you come in? Why is all this woman's rights and racism talk important to your survival?
It was in 2008, in a little town in Peru.Back then I was volunteering for a women’s rights NGO in Lima. The towns income was based mostly on small- scale fisheries. You know, where humans go out in little boats to fish mostly for their own sustenanceI noticed a local woman with bruises on her arms. She opened up and told me about the domestic abuse that was affecting her and other women, for the men of the town could not catch enough fish to provide the livelihood of the families anymore.Something that, as I learned later, happens all around the world. So, you see, dear ocean, how because the men didn‘t catch enough fish, the women suffered.
I understood that it would make more sense for me to find out more about you, before continuing my path.I started to reach out and talk to humans who work in marineconservation.I was lucky enough to find people who helped me to learn more about you.Other questions arose:Do I have to study marine biology to protect you?Do you care if you are saved by a scientist or by a non- scientist? Can you afford to turn someone away who comes to your rescue?
I grew tired of seeing you, the ocean, as a place that was solely there to supply us humans with resources. Then the best thing ever happened:I read about Marine Protected Areas.
Yes, I know, you are getting all excited about them. They are a place of rest and happiness, a safe haven for the fauna and flora that you created. But, the more I learned, the more I got concerned:Unfortunately a lot of Marine Protected Areas are mere “paper parks”, snakes in disguise for you, dear ocean, as they only offer protection on paper.
I needed to find out more and really connect with you, dear ocean. So, with the help of skilled and understanding teachers, who happen to be Men of Color, I learned even more:First, how to swim, at the age of 33 - a skill many people living on your shores, especially People of Color, don`t have.Shortly after how to dive.
From November 2017 to October 2018, I undertook the first ever world trip to Marine Protected Areas, to see for myself how the situation was.The focus was on the Caribbean, one of your most beautiful partsIt was during the trip that the „snakes“ got me in the most unexpected moments:
While participating in a sailing course before the trip, I was ignored because I was the only one in the course who could not just hop on their family boat for the weekend to practise. With the hope of a more inclusive experience, I went sailing with a crew, with the sad outcome of being bullied by a fellow crew member because of the color of my skin. While diving in Australia, a dive Instructor mentioned, I didn't have to worry about being assaulted, because I looked like an Aborigine.Another dive instructor did a racist greeting while walking by, as if it were the most normal thing to do.
As you know, dear ocean, swimming, diving, sailing, all these skills are key to get in touch with you and do the actual work in the field. During the trip, other “snakes” became visible:
Institutions, where white staff were in charge, not giving locals the knowledge nor the power to operate on their own– a kind of white savior complex. After the trip, I learnt that Women of Color are more likely to experience e.g. microaggressions, disrespect, misogyny and white fragility – in marine conservation and life in general.Gatekeepers, who decide who is worthy of a fellowship, job etc. areeverywhere.Often, Women of Color are the first ones and the only ones in their families pursuing a career in marine conservation, sometimes a career in general.A mentor can be a „ladder“ and is very helpful to overcome the hurdles, the „snakes“.
Even if someone from a minority gets access to university, can that human afford the unpaid internships and volunteer opportunities?Free labour is a huge issue.Environmental jobs are advertised and accepted through established networks. When back in Germany, I sat down with a coach to prepare for a job interview. She opened the NGO website: „You don't stand a chance to get the job. Look, all the superiors hired someone who looks like their younger self.“
So, imagine, a human from a minority gets hired – congratulations, you would say dear ocean. Or not?It depends on which position the human ends up in, how much influence and power they have: Are they glorified interns, part of the senior staff, member of the board?Studies show that the higher in the hierarchy, the lower the diversity is.Sadly, some People of Color are hired merely as tokens of diversity, to make the institution look inclusive.
How about the working conditions? How about the salary? Is it the same salary someone gets, who is not a minority and has the same qualifications?Generally, the salaries in conservation are low.Yes, some humans claim that it is „working in the conservation field is rewarding enough to justify the sacrifice“.Again, a privilege not everyone has access to. Why? Because of "black" or "brown tax“:This means, dear ocean, the money that professionals of color are expected to give to support their families. It causes financial distress to middle class professionals as they usually have no savings left.It is a financial burden on households of color and can rob a person of the ability to attain financial security.
How about the relationship with the non- minority people at work?Imagine, ocean, there is something called „racial gaslighting“:When humans who have never experienced racism, tell the ones that do and share their feelings, that they are exaggerating, making them doubt themselves.Imagine the mental strain of minorities, who carry this burden.
So, you see, humans who are against diversity, are not only hurting other humans, but they are also hurting you.It seems as if human society does not want a lot of people to protect you.
Looking at our game of snakes and ladders, all humans in marineconservation are on their way to the “win”, to help you.But in reality some get a headstart while minorities lag behind.
I am a marine conservationist.I am part of an industry that does not look like me.Not only am I a woman, I am a Woman of Color.I represent two significantly underrepresented groups.Representation matters:Through creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce in Marine Conservation, young people from underrepresented groups are empowered and enthused to make you, the ocean, feel secure and happy.
I hope through sharing my story of resilience, you can understand what numerous humans have to go through if they want to help you.
Dear ocean, I invite you look into the future with me:I see a world, in which there are more ladders than snakes.I see a world where all humans care for your wellbeing.I see a world in which marine conservation is a welcoming field.I see a world in which all humans are allowed to save you, the ocean.

December 2018
Iglo Veggie love with broccoli, buckwheat and black beans. Quick and easy.
The TEDxTUM event was pretty inspiring. I loved how they organised it and some of the speakers were amazing. Seeing all the cool stuff other people are working on actually motivated me to try and achieve great things myself. I'd like to learn about something new, start a project or volunteer.
Pick Up Limes videos.
The way Cher sings the word Memphis in her cover song.
Seeing Frank for the first time in four months. Having a good time at the Uncle Acid concert, getting a beer at Flex. Even though meeting him always causes some kind of emotional turmoil it might actually help to solve a few things I've been stressing over this time, for example that whole deal with Claudia.
Spending two hours in the kitchen on a Sunday morning. Preparing a summer and a winter curry. Pre-cutting salad. Listening to Tai Chi music. Baking these divine buckwheat chocolate cookies - absolutely delicious even though I forgot to add salt. Kinda healthy, too! It's grain-free (I even used groats) and I substituted part of the sugar with honey.
Gift ideas for rock collectors and mycophiles.
A spotted woodpecker in our backyard.
Dalmatian Jasper. Such a pretty stone.
Blinded by the Light. And a trip down musical memory lane. Making a nostalgia mixtape. Singing, enjoying the sound of my voice (as long as I hit the right vocal range).
Drawing owls. For hours. Using my Polychromos coloured pencils. I'm currerntly working on two owl-related projects, designing a logo for coffee roasters and making my friends' wedding invitation. Drawing owls like lovebirds is such a satisfying thing to do. Also: making my students come up with new ideas! Some actually drew some owl logos, too!
Tetris.
Reading books I don't understand. By people who are smarter than me. A very humbling experience. There is so much more to learn, experience and achieve.
Franzi's elegant coat and her ice crystal earrings. She's pregnant but she is skinnier than before and looks great. We cuddled up on a rooftop and had Kinderpunsch.
Practising The Pogues' Fairytale of New York for for karaoke night. I never hit the NYPD choir note quite right. My neighbours must hate me.
Taking a mental health day. Starting the day with baking cookies, making vegan sushi rolls. Reading, taking a nap. Yoga in the evening. Feeling really happy and relaxed. One of those rare inspired days when everything just falls into place. I kept revisiting beautiful places and memories during Shavasana. And I LOVE my yoga teacher more and more each week. So sad she is leaving the studio.
Taming your temper - tips for anger management.
Another coincidence. I wondered when the next Bilderbuch record will be released when I was looking at Mavi Phoenix at her concert - that girl is the female version of Maurice Ernst. A few hours later I found out that Bilderbuch actually had released a new album one day ago. WHAT.
Mirror tape.
Being a fluffy little red cat's human of choice. We sat in a cat café, no animals in sight. After a while a cat walked up straight towards me, sat down on my yellow scarf and kneaded it. Later she demanded attention and purred while I scratched her jaw. Apparently this was quite a rare occurence because she is said to be really shy and hard to handle. Weirdos unite!
Making Bhindi Masala, a vegan okra curry. Spicy and intense - delicious! Oh, and sushi rolls filled with avocado, veggies and fancy tofu/tempeh. Now I have a whole container waiting for me in the fridge.
Practising yoga for 20min on a gloomy Monday morning. Lighting a candle, drinking a cup of Ayurvedic Kapha tea with honey and lemon.
Tom, who inspired me to learn more about Ayurveda. And to rewatch The Darjeeling Limited because let's face it - Wes Anderson really knows how to make one of the poorest countries in the world look gorgeous.
We become what we think about. It's impossible to be successful without having a destination.
Quotations from Siri Hustvedt's The Blazing World: 1 / 2
"Smelling you almost makes me cum."
Running around with a fake septum piercing. I kinda like the look. I'm actually considering getting a real one but so far I'm fine with the clip-ons. The good thing is that you can't see the ring's ends anyway in that kind of piercing.
Spending time with the old friends. The best ones. The ones you don't have to speak to and it's still not uncomfortable. The ones you can be super weird around and they embrace it. The ones you can tell your strangest ideas and stories.
There is a new Turkish supermarket right around the corner! Fresh cilantro whenever I want! YES!!!
Heavy snowfall. It does look kinda pretty, I admit.
Many questions, not enough answers at the ESO Supernova exhibition/planetarium. / Making another cat friend over breakfast. / Seeing my foxy ginger lady Anika again after such a long time! / Orange marzipan lebkuchen and roasted coconut almonds (they taste like Raffaello). / Finding the perfect earrings and a beautiful head band at EDITED - The Label. / Performing Fairytale of New York live on stage with Manu. Being able to curse at somebody through song is perfect, I had a lot of fun. Also, he promised me his art teacher sweater as a Christmas present.
A knitting project with rainbow wool.
Making a clay sculpture for my mum. Taking it out of the oven at 80 degrees, wrapped in a dish towel like a baby.
The honey marzipan nougat bar from dm bio.
Meeting Manu at his office. Receiving the most awesome paint palette sweater as a Christmas present! And he let me spend a full hour in virtual reality! He has such an amazing programme which lets you draw in 3D and float around in space (with VR goggles). I'm absolutely fascinated and intrigued. Gotta visit him more often.
Meeting Tobi, Maike, Lena and Christian at Märchenbasar. Being drunk after some Feuerzangenbowle with rum (Pfeffi in Manu's case) and white mulled wine. Taking the long way home.
Buying Paulaner Spezi for my class. Supermarket trips with the kids before 8am. Schrottwichteln. Watching random goat videos and intros to children's series.
Having a drink at Goldene Bar in Haus der Kunst. Such a gorgeous place. I'm trying to get into a workshop on the museum's architecture at the end of January.
Making random people want to kiss me. Having no desire whatsoever to actually kiss them.
The Harry Potter round (on special request) at the pub quiz.
Reading Stephen Hawking's short answers to some of the big questions. I have to admit, I know nothing about physics or cosmology and at times his explanations were super hard to understand (fine, I probably didn't understand most of it) but I love creating a need to use my brain in uncommon ways.
Vivid dreams. About dangerous skyscrapers (just different floors stacked loosely on top of each other), a kidnapping in a futuristic car by very glamorous gangsters, lesbians on a scooter trying to save me, travelling through Asia and the US with Sash, a sinking ship (but all the passengers swam back to the surface after a short period of unconsciousness), ATMs, fancy drinks, meeting strangers with beautiful eyelashes at a restaurant.
Discovering the Trouvelot astronomical drawings (1882) on the darkest day of the year, winter solstice. Watching the night fade away ever so slowly in the morning from the kitchen window, squeezing fresh oranges to make juice for breakfast. Bright orange and midnight blue is a great colour combination.
ASMRctica.
An article about a dear friend of mine appeared in Süddeutsche Zeitung! So happy for him.
Spending time with very old friends right before Christmas. Tobi, Sash, Michi, Yanic, Fischi and his wife... Playing MarioKart on SNES with Peter and taking weird selfies together. I had a very nice evening.
Managing to get a look at downtown Chicago during my layover. I uber-ed into the city centre (watching the skyscrapers getting larger and larger), walked around Millenium Park and along Lake Michigan. I spent quite a bit of time at Blick, an amazing art store, before I took the train back to the airport.
Arriving in Mexico in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve. Seeing the city sparkling from above. Watching a bunch of kids beating a pinata well after midnight. Arriving in a beautiful artist's apartment in Condesa.
The Anthropology Museum in CDMX made it on the list of my favourite museums ever. I could have spent days there. I kept sketching some of the funny masks and Maya figurines. There were plenty of creepy tombs and skeletons, depictions of weird Gods, handicrafts and woodcarvings. It was just so interesting, probably because I had never seen a lot of South American / Aztec culture before and I love learning and exploring new things.
Christmas day in CDMX: sunshine, tacky glitter decorations, pointy balloons and spiky pinatas. Dancing, ancient smoke rituals performed by a Mayan community.
Mexican street food, especially the vegetarian street food tour with David. Meeting the Blue Corn Lady (her quesadillas are with cactus and beans and they're incredibly delicious). Flatbread, corn, fruit with chili and lime. Pulque and Mezcal. Finding out that the green salsa is actually worse than the red one. Tacos, Enchiladas, Tamales. If you go to Mexico just for the food you'll still have plenty to explore.
That evening with the pink sunset. Walking through the old used book store in Roma. Reading an interesting take on Lars von Trier's Melancholia. Meeting the resident cat.
Lucha Libre! Watching the luchadores, especially the small people in the second round. Laughing about the Mexican boy next to me swearing at the top of his lungs. Getting a mask as a souvenir.
Climbing the sun and moon pyramid at Teotihuacán. Getting a sunburn. Enjoying the atmosphere. It's a very impressive site.
Diving in Cozumel with Brooke-Anne (a librarian from Las Vegas who was raised by Mormons), Cynthia from Quebec and Lucie from Toulouse. Entering some coral formations underwater. Eating cantaloupe melon and chocolate cookies after the dive. Spending the evening with another Canadian, Jussi from Finland and that other dude from Puerto Rico. And some Indio beers.
What I loved most about Tulum were the ruins (right next to a gorgeous beach) and the health food restaurants (La Hoja Verde and Co.Conamor).
And this year I don't really have a good New Year's Eve story because I fell asleep at quarter past eleven in a little village west of Tulum. All alone. Could be worse though, I had an amazing year.
