Israel Has Created a New Standard for Urban Warfare. Why Will No One Admit It? | by John Spencer
The Israel Defense Forces conducted an operation at al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip to root out Hamas terrorists recently, once again taking unique precautions as it entered the facility to protect the innocent; Israeli media reported that doctors accompanied the forces to help Palestinian patients if needed. They were also reported to be carrying food, water and medical supplies for the civilians inside.
None of this meant anything to Israel's critics, of course, who immediately pounced. The critics, as usual, didn't call out Hamas for using protected facilities like hospitals for its military activity. Nor did they mention the efforts of the IDF to minimize civilian casualties.
In their criticism, Israel's opponents are erasing a remarkable, historic new standard Israel has set. In my long career studying and advising on urban warfare for the U.S. military, I've never known an army to take such measures to attend to the enemy's civilian population, especially while simultaneously combating the enemy in the very same buildings. In fact, by my analysis, Israel has implemented more precautions to prevent civilian harm than any military in history—above and beyond what international law requires and more than the U.S. did in its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Tumblr media
The predominant Western theory of executing wars, called maneuver warfare, seeks to shatter an enemy morally and physically with surprising, overwhelming force and speed, striking at the political and military centers of gravity so that the enemy is destroyed or surrenders quickly. This was the case in the invasions of Panama in 1989, Afghanistan in 2001, Iraq in 2003 and the failed illegal attempt by Russia to take Ukraine in 2022. In all these cases, no warning or time was given to evacuate cities.
In many ways, Israel has had to abandon this established playbook in order to prevent civilian harm. The IDF has telegraphed almost every move ahead of time so civilians can relocate, nearly always ceding the element of surprise. This has allowed Hamas to reposition its senior leaders (and the Israeli hostages) as needed through the dense urban terrain of Gaza and the miles of underground tunnels it's built.
Hamas fighters, who unlike the IDF don't wear uniforms, have also taken the opportunity to blend into civilian populations as they evacuate. The net effect is that Hamas succeeds in its strategy of creating Palestinian suffering and images of destruction to build international pressure on Israel to stop its operations, therefore ensuring Hamas' survival.
Israel gave warning, in some cases for weeks, for civilians to evacuate the major urban areas of northern Gaza before it launched its ground campaign in the fall. The IDF reported dropping over 7 million flyers, but it also deployed technologies never used anywhere in the world, as I witness firsthand on a recent trip to Gaza and southern Israel.
Israel has made over 70,000 direct phones calls, sent over 13 million text messages and left over 15 million pre-recorded voicemails to notify civilians that they should leave combat areas, where they should go, and what route they should take. They deployed drones with speakers and dropped giant speakers by parachute that began broadcasting for civilians to leave combat areas once they hit the ground. They announced and conducted daily pauses of all operations to allow any civilians left in combat areas to evacuate.
These measures were effective. Israel was able to evacuate upwards of 85 percent of the urban areas in northern Gaza before the heaviest fighting began. This is actually consistent with my research on urban warfare history that shows that no matter the effort, about 10 percent of populations stay.
As the war raged on, Israel began giving out its military maps to civilians so they could conduct localized evacuations. This, too, has never been done in war. During my recent visit to Khan Yunis, Gaza, and the IDF civilian harm mitigation unit in southern Israel, I observed as the army began using these maps to communicate each day where the IDF would be operating so civilians in other areas would stay out of harm's way.
I saw that the IDF even tracked the population in real time down to a few-block radius using drone and satellite imagery and cell phone presence and building damage assessments to avoid hitting civilians. The New York Times reported in January that the daily civilian death toll had more than halved in the previous month and was down almost two-thirds from its peak.
Of course, the true number of Gaza civilian deaths is unknown. The current Hamas-supplied estimate of over 31,000 does not acknowledge a single combatant death (nor any deaths due to the misfiring of its own rockets or other friendly fire). The IDF estimates it has killed about 13,000 Hamas operatives, a number I believe credible partly because I believe the armed forces of a democratic American ally over a terrorist regime, but also because of the size of Hamas fighters assigned to areas that were cleared and having observed the weapons used, the state of Hamas' tunnels and other aspects of the combat.
That would mean some 18,000 civilians have died in Gaza, a ratio of roughly 1 combatant to 1.5 civilians. Given Hamas' likely inflation of the death count, the real figure could be closer to 1 to 1. Either way, the number would be historically low for modern urban warfare.
The UN, EU and other sources estimate that civilians usually account for 80 percent to 90 percent of casualties, or a 1:9 ratio, in modern war (though this does mix all types of wars). In the 2016-2017 Battle of Mosul, a battle supervised by the U.S. that used the world's most powerful airpower resources, some 10,000 civilians were killed compared to roughly 4,000 ISIS terrorists.
And yet, analysts who should know better are still engaging in condemnation of the IDF based on the level of destruction that's still occurred—destruction that is unavoidable against an enemy that embeds in a vast tunnel system under civilian sites in dense urban terrain. This effects-based condemnation or criticism is not how the laws of war work, or violations determined. These and other analysts say the destruction and civilian causalities must either stop or be avoided in an alternative form of warfare.
Ironically, the careful approach Israel has taken may have actually led to more destruction; since the IDF giving warnings and conducting evacuations help Hamas survive, it ultimately prolongs the war and, with it, its devastation.
Israel has not created a gold standard in civilian harm mitigation in war. That implies there is a standard in civilian casualties in war that is acceptable or not acceptable; that zero civilian deaths in war is remotely possible and should be the goal; that there is a set civilian-to-combatant ratio in war no matter the context or tactics of the enemy. But all available evidence shows that Israel has followed the laws of war, legal obligations, best practices in civilian harm mitigation and still found a way to reduce civilian casualties to historically low levels.
Those calling for Israel to find an alternative to inflicting civilian casualties to lower amounts (like zero) should be honest that this alternative would leave the Israeli hostages in captivity and allow Hamas to survive the war. The alternative to a nation's survival cannot be a path to extinction.
John Spencer is chair of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute (MWI) at West Point, codirector of MWI's Urban Warfare Project and host of the "Urban Warfare Project Podcast." He served for 25 years as an infantry soldier, which included two combat tours in Iraq. SR Ortho Shroud - Apprentice Chef Vignette
"Master Chef"
Tumblr media
[Cafeteria – Judging Venue]
Master Chef ― Ortho Version ~Let’s Make Loco Moco 1~
―A short while before cooking begins
Ortho: ―Energy inspection complete. All functions, including the cooking and processing units, are operating normally.
Ortho: Everything activates without a hitch, great. I tried to make my exterior look similar to my brother's outfit when he took the class, does it look weird at all?
Azul: It looks fantastic on you, Ortho-san. However, I never expected to see you take an interest in cooking… I'm a little taken aback.
Ortho: It's only recently piqued my interest. Sometimes I hear my classmates swapping kitchen horror stories, you see.
Ortho: When someone said, "cooking is way too high level for newbies," it suddenly made me want to try to win against it… Which resulted in this gear being developed.
Azul: I see. And if you are to do a trial run of that gear here, the Master Chef course would be the best opportunity to do so.
Ortho: Exactly! I knew you'd get it, Azul-san.
Ortho: Not only can this gear cook food, but it's built with many other functions to manage proper nutrition or count calories and the like.
Ortho: I plan on getting the expert chef to check out my functions and test out what all would be useful for cooking!
Azul: I can see you're raring to go. Then, I'll wish us both luck.
Ortho: Yeah!
Tumblr media
[Kitchen]
Ghost Chef: We'll have you make the "Loco Moco" dish for us today, Ortho-kun.
Ghost Chef: First, we'll have to prep the onions that'll be mixed into the hamburger meat. Do you know how to mince?
Ortho: Okay, I got this!
Ortho: ―Begining cooking procedures. Activating the Cooking Gear's Food Slicer Unit.
[whirrr… fsshhh…!]
Ghost Chef: H-HUUUUUUUUUUH!? HE TRANSFORMED!!?
Ortho: First, I need to adjust the shape so it will be easier to prepare. I need to swing vertically over the onion and… slice it in half!
Ortho: Great, looks like my knife is sharp enough! Umm, since this is for mixing in with hamburger meat…
Ortho: ―Executing command: "Target ingredient: Onion / Processing Method: Mince / Configuration: 3mm Squares"
Ghost Chef: W-Wow… The onion was finely chopped up in no time flat…!
Ortho: …Whew, I've finished with the onion. Will these be sufficient?
Ghost Chef: Y-Yeah, it's cut expertly, but… What exactly is that round blade that came out of your glove…?
Ortho: I took an industrial-grade cutter and downsized it so it could be used in cooking.
Ortho: It releases water as it cuts. This removes the necessity to clean both the blade and the ingredient.
Ghost Chef: You've sure come up with something interesting. But this is just too far removed from traditional cooking methods… Hmm.
Ortho: Different tools shouldn't cause any deviation from the recipe, though… Or should I have used a knife?
Ghost Chef: Well, I guess for your case, you have to cook like that… So I'll make an exception this time.
Ortho: Yay~! Okay then, I'm ready for the next part of the class!
Tumblr media
Ortho: ―Activating Heat Sensor Camera. Calculating the temperature of the stir-fried onions… 38.2°C. Current temperature is 41°C lower than last measurement.
Ortho: According to my database, the best temperature range to continue cooking at after letting the dish simmer down is between 38~44°C. Chef, can we continue with the next step?
Ghost Chef: Sure, that's fine. So, next, take the ground meat, onions, and spices to form your hamburgers.
Ortho: Understood! ―Executing Command: Deploy Hand-Coating Gloves.
Ghost Chef: Woah! And now suddenly there are gloves attached to your hands. Is this another one of your technological applications?
Ortho: I'm using something similar to shrink wrap for this. It'd be pretty tough to do maintenance if my joints got dirtied.
Ghost Chef: Ah, that I can understand. It's just like how it's troublesome to have to wash everything that climbed up inside of an eggbeater.
Ortho: I thought as much. In the future, I'd like to equip some functions that would handle this effectively, but… This time, I want to try to knead it by hand
Ghost Chef: And why is that?
Ortho: It sounds like when my brother took this course, he didn't like this specific task.
Ortho: So I thought it'd be good to know the source of his stress, so I could factor that into the eventual kneading function…
[squish…]
Ortho: Hmm, maybe he didn't like how it felt when he touched it? Probably means if I can automate this task, everything'll be solved!
Ghost Chef: Sounds like you've figured out your answer, Ortho-kun.
Ghost Chef: By the way, your brother is Idia-kun, right? Has he changed at all since taking the course?
Ortho: Hmm, I don't think anything changed. He still doesn't really care about food at all…
Ortho: …Oh yeah! Maybe I can use this Cooking Gear to help improve his eating habits.
Ghost Chef: Eh!? You made all these functions without actually knowing what you'd use it for in the first place?
Ortho: Ehehe, so actually… I just made this because I wanted to "win at cooking!" So I didn't really have a particular use for it in mind.
Ghost Chef: Well, I guess that's a good enough reason to start. Also, even if it is an afterthought, I'm glad that you have a goal to strive for now.
Ortho: Yeah. Alright… Now I have to start improving this gear so I can make food that my brother'll want to eat!
Tumblr media

Master Chef ― Ortho Version ~Let’s Make Loco Moco 2~
Ghost Chef: While we wait for the hamburger to cook, you can prepare the toppings. We'll garnish with cabbage and mini tomatoes for this dish.
Ghost Chef: The cabbage needs to be shredded, so… Are you able to adjust your cutting size in 0.1mm increments?
Ortho: By design, I should be able to. I would like to test it for myself, so could you tell me the specific size you're looking for?
Ghost Chef: Then, if you can, slice at 1.6mm.
Ortho: Got it!
Ortho: ―Executing command: "Target ingredient: Cabbage / Processing Method: Slice / Thickness Configuration: 1.6mm"
Ghost Chef: Woooah, very good! It was surprising when I first saw all this, but now it's really nice to see how quick and accurately you can cut.
Ortho: Simple tasks like these are a machine's strong point, after all! …Okay, I'm done! I wonder how the hamburger is coming along?
Ortho: ―Activating Heat Sensor Camera. Frying pan is holding steady at 16°C. Hamburger internal temperature: 34.5°C.
Ghost Chef: That's a pretty handy function, too. You don't need to take the lid off the frying pan to check how it's cooking, so there's no drop in temperature.
Ghost Chef: …Ah, oops. I let myself get a little too distracted watching your really neat functions.
Ghost Chef: Normally, it would take more time to prepare the toppings, but you're moving along smoothly.
Ortho: Ah! Then, while we wait for the hamburger to cook, can you explain to me more about the toppings?
Ortho: Cause toppings are kind of like power-ups from a video game, right? You don't really need them but it's better to have them.
Ortho: That's why I bet if I could know which toppings are the most filling, I could make my cooking even more efficient.
Ghost Chef: Hmm, that's a difficult question. It can vary depending on what you have on hand, and what you feel like using.
Ghost Chef: For example, I wanted to make sure there was nutritional balance, so this dish uses vegetables as a topping.
Ortho: If we were to remove the vegetables from this recipe… The vitamin intake would be reduced by 75%. It really would lose that nutritional balance.
Ghost Chef: In the past, I would serve it as a salad on the side, but there were so many kids who wouldn't even touch it, because they didn't want veggies.
Ortho: I get it, you revised the process fundamentally to help resolve your problem. I think that's a very reasonable method.
Ghost Chef: Haha, thank you. Yes, I'm glad I changed it up like this.
Ortho: Changes, hm… If I want to be able to add that as a possible function to the Cooking Gear, I'll have to gather a lot more data.
Ortho: If I can learn to swap out ingredients, it might help in dealing with my brother's bad eating habits.
Ortho: The more I learn about cooking, the more I can see all sorts of possible challenges, just like in a video game.
Tumblr media
Ortho: ―And finally, I set the egg on top… Done! It's made to look like the dish I saw as the top hit in an image search.
Ghost Chef: Nice, you've plated it so beautifully and deliciously. I guess it's time for you to take it to the judging venue, then.
Ortho: Okay! I can't wait to see how the judge will react~
Tumblr media
[Cafeteria – Judging Venue]
Leona: Ughh… What a pain. Why do I need to be a judge for this Master Chef thing…?
Ortho: Sorry to keep you waiting! Oh, I see you were the one to order this dish, then.
Tumblr media
Ortho: Here you go, this is the Loco Moco you requested! Please, enjoy!
Ortho: I want to use your assessment of the dish to help improve my Cooking Gear, so please be as candid as possible.
Leona: …Hey. Why're there vegetables in this loco moco? There wasn't any last time I ordered it.
Ortho: I heard this was a change made to help people eat their veggies. Great, right?
Leona: …Tch, way to do something completely unnecessary.
[bite, chew, chew, chew…]
Ortho: I followed the recipe exactly as it was written, so there shouldn't be any issues with the flavor… What do you think?
Leona: The hamburger and the gravy sauce taste fine. But because of all the veggies you threw in there, it shouldn't even get a single point.
Ortho: Ehhh, why!? I made sure to follow the recipe and throw in the right amount, size, and cooking time for all the ingredients!
Leona: Why should I care? All that matters is the judge's opinion, yeah? The recipe means nothin' if it don't suit my taste.
Ortho: …So without considering any of the general judging criteria, this dish "doesn't taste good" to you?
Leona: Basically. But hey, maybe you coulda gotten high marks if you'd just left the veg out like it's always been made.
Ortho: By adding the vegetables, it gave the dish a better nutritional balance. But Leona-san would have preferred no vegetables…
Leona: Geez, can't believe you'd just ruin a good meal like that. Since the judging's over, I'm outta here.
Ortho: Ah, he left…  I can't really understand how someone could say a dish that satisfies nutritional needs "doesn't taste good."
Ghost Chef: Leona-kun must really hate vegetables, if he couldn't get past even this small addition.
Ortho: Ah, I should have asked why he hates vegetables to help me with figuring out how to change up recipes!
Ghost Chef: Ortho-kun… Are you actually happy with that result?
Ortho: Yes! The more data I can gather on any issues, the better I can improve my Cooking Gear!
Ghost Chef: Well, I guess I'm glad you're not sad after hearing that, but… Why does that make you that excited?
Ortho: Leona-san was already unhappy with the dish even before tasting it. That means he had already decided it wouldn't taste good just from looking at it.
Ortho: The challenge rating just shot up, now that I have to keep an eye on visual aesthetics, taste and nutrition… Of course that gets me super pumped up!
Ortho: I might be a long way away from being able to tackle my brother's bad eating habits, but… I'll definitely do my best to make my Cooking Gear even better!

Instead, the U.S. and its allies should be studying how they can apply the IDF's tactics for protecting civilians, despite the fact that these militaries would almost certainly be extremely reluctant to employ these techniques because of how it would disadvantage them in any fight with an urban terrorist army like Hamas.
The predominant Western theory of executing wars, called maneuver warfare, seeks to shatter an enemy morally and physically with surprising, overwhelming force and speed, striking at the political and military centers of gravity so that the enemy is destroyed or surrenders quickly. Like Knightmare, Like Pilot
Hey, Larry! Did you notice that the design and armament of Knightmares reflect the personality and attack style of their pilot? Don't believe me? I'll prove it to you. But I'm going to focus on the unchangeable features that were installed in the first version, since Knightmares are updated as the series progresses and, if I stop to analyze the new implements, I'll never finish. Besides, it won't be necessary.
Tumblr media
Let's start with the Gawain (the same one that Shinkiro is based on, which is the Knightmare that Lelouch operates in R2). The Gawain has a tracking system called Druid since it was created specifically for the purpose of investigating the structure and function of Thought Elevators. However, after the Black Knights took possession of it, that system was used to track the possible movements of enemy units, which makes this Knightmare a perfect unit to command others. These characteristics are perfectly compatible with Lelouch's leading and strategic nature. Lelouch is the commander of his military unit. He is the brain that designs all the plans and strategies because he can predict the enemy's and prepare an effective counterattack.
At the same time, Gawain is the first Knightmare to have a pair of hadron cannons installed on each shoulder, allowing it to emit continuous streams of destructive energy at prodigious ranges. Therefore, it is a Knightmare that can execute long-range attacks. This type of armament makes it the perfect Knightmare for Lelouch. He needs to fully and thoroughly visualize the entire battle and anticipate his opponents' attacks in order to design effective strategies to neutralize them. He can know and measure the effects that his Knightmare's long-range attacks will have. He is a long-term strategist.
The Hadron Cannons give Gawain great destructive power and, due to their blooming effect, Gawain fires in an erratic manner. This is matched by the chaos and devastation that Lelouch causes. The boy is so immersed in his revenge that, at first, he doesn't see what and who he is taking out. As you may recall, Gawain also has two seats and is usually controlled by two people: C.C. and Lelouch. She is in charge of navigation, while Lelouch has access to the weaponry because, as Schneizel said about chess, Lelouch "is an offensive style player" (he wasn't going to act any differently on the battlefield).
Gawain doesn't have an ejector seat, unlike other Knightmares, since it is an unfinished prototype. I interpret it as Lelouch's willingness to die for his goals and what he believes in. "Only those who are willing to die should have the power to kill." That's his credo.
Despite its incredible capabilities, Gawain is a rather slow battle unit and can be easily outmatched by other small, fast Knightmares (like Cornelia's Knightmare, which isn't as technologically advanced a prototype as Kallen's and Suzaku's, but is fast and fierce in hand-to-hand combat, fitting the belligerent character of Britannia's best warrior princess). This translates into Lelouch's weaknesses. The boy needs to think before acting, and if he doesn't take into account some variable that may appear later or nothing goes according to his plan, he's lost, because Lelouch doesn't know how to adapt to situations. He doesn't know how to improvise. See, every time he's in check it's because he's thinking about what he can do (and his intuition tells him that nothing works) and unfortunately the battlefield isn't a place where you can stop and think.
Tumblr media
But you know who can adapt well to situations and improvise better than anyone else? Yes, Kallen.
Guren is the complete opposite of the Gawain, as it is a short-range attack Knightmare by virtue of lacking long-range weapons and instead being equipped with a knife, a custom pistol, the Slash Harker, and of course, its main weapon is its right hand, which houses the Radiant Wave Surger, which is a powerful microwave radiation emitter. So Guren needs to get close to its opponent in order to grab them and fry them. Thus, Guren takes to the field as a Knightmare as a melee unit and with an aggressive, direct and opportunistic attack style.
Kallen is well suited to that fighting style (and that type of Knightmare) as she is direct, spontaneous, impulsive, and practical. But all of this means that Kallen takes a lot more risks, and since she can't predict the consequences of her own or her opponents' attacks, her Knightmare is more vulnerable to damage, and indeed, when she is outmatched, it's because her Knightmare has been affected, things that are out of her control (not because she ran out of ideas or was surprised by something she didn't see coming, like Lelouch).
The fandom believes that Kallen isn't a strategist and is just pure brute force. In reality, she is a good tactician. She doesn't stop to think: "I won't do this because the Guren's arm will be damaged." No, that's Lelouch who is comfortable planning the entire battle in his mind to prevent possible setbacks before taking action. She simply connects to her environment and responds to the stimuli, as they arise in the moment, in what is happening. A good example of this can be seen in episode 9 of the first season. Kallen is in a Sutherland and is outnumbered by a police Knightmare, but she manages to win at the last minute when the Knightmare is about to give her the coup de grace. How did she do it? Because Kallen fires her Harken Slash, grabs onto some infrastructure and pulls, so that the Knightmare crashes into the infrastructure and the pilot dies. I mean, Kallen worked with the elements she had at her disposal.
By the way, something that was emphasized quite a bit in episode 10 of season 1 is that Guren is the first Japanese Knightmare and Kallen identifies herself as Japanese, so the Guren reflects her identity. But, after Lloyd and Cécile had access to it, it was reconfigured, modified, and updated. So we can say that Guren, who is a Knightmare made using Japanese and Britannian technology, and Kallen, who is the daughter of a Japanese woman and a Britannian man, are mixed-bloods. Did you notice that, Larry?
Also, the Knightmare has blue eyes and is red in color. Kallen is a redhead with blue eyes (and sometimes wears red clothes).
Tumblr media
Now, what about Suzaku?
Lancelot is a Knightmare that has different weapons: two Vibrating Maser Swords, a VARIS particle rifle, two shields (called Blaze Luminous, in case you didn't know, Larry), two data sphere sensors, and four Slash Harkens, which are, roughly speaking, projectiles, and the curious thing about these Slash Harkens is that they have experimental thrusters called Harken Boosters that can improve Lancelot's speed and allow it to change direction in mid-flight. And what is Suzaku's best quality in combat? No, Larry, it's not being "annoying." It's his speed. The guy is so fast that bullets don't hit him when he's running (he has to stand still for them to hit him). The Guren has the Landspinner propulsion system, only it's built into its legs, while the Lancelot has it in its feet, so this Knightmare is as fast as its pilot.
Regarding the different weapons, I think about the training Suzaku has received throughout his life. In the flashback with Tohdoh, he's training with swords (Katanas, surely). In the army, he would have received training on the use of firearms. (Guren, by the way, only had one knife, and Kallen carried a pocketknife hidden up and down her body throughout the first season - coincidence? I don't think so.) If you ask me, Lancelot has the bearing and weapons of a medieval knight, which reflects not only Suzaku's chivalrous attitude, but also his rank as a knight in the Britannian army (first as Princess Euphemia's knight, and then as one of the Knights of Rounds).
As you can see, this is another Knightmare that doesn't have long-range weapons. They're short-range, too. So, the Lancelot is a melee unit just like Kallen's Guren. Suzaku and Kallen are trained in self-defense, mind you. On the other hand, the Lancelot lacks an ejection system like the Gawain. Leaving aside that Lloyd is so excited about installing weapons and upgrades that he forgets to install an ejection seat and that he doesn't care enough about the physical integrity of his pilot, I associate it with Suzaku's kamikaze will. Even if he had one, he might not use it because he wants to atone for his sins through death.
Aside from that, the Lancelot has green eyes and is white. Suzaku also has green eyes and his uniform is white.
In short, Gawain is the right Knightmare for an INTJ like Lelouch, while Lancelot and Guren are ideal for Suzaku and Kallen respectively, who are two Sensors (he's ISFJ and she's ESFP), meaning they pay more attention to their physical reality (Lelouch is more focused on reading situations between the lines).
Anyway, you guys might have more to contribute to the conversation since you like mecha and are more familiar with it than I am.

I was playing around with the idea that maybe Alder isn't actually even that powerful as a witch, but reviewing the evidence in the show does point more towards her being at least above average. First of all, we have to consider if "power" is a meaningful concept. Raelle's case seems to indicate that, yes, it's not just about producing wavelength patterns (as the Camarilla are able to reproduce technologically), there is a magical depth of capability that affects the reach of Work. Two people with the same vocal control will produce different scales of effect depending on their power. Jem Bellweather can create storms of a certain magnitude by herself, which would require collaboration by less powerful witches. (Although, there is a bit of the show playing coy about power levels due to budget constraints. Bridey mentions Razor Hail being thrown at them by enemy witches in the Andes, but by S3 Petra says that no Bellweather has been able to pull Razor Hail off. Maybe Razor Hail is normally only a collaborative Work? Ditto for the dual tornados seen in the pilot. ) Going back to Alder, we have a couple of points of comparison. First, both Alder and Petra affect the weather with their moods, causing storms to brew and thunder rumbles when angry. Second, we have Alder herself calling Khalida powerful, and the two of them share being First Song Stewards (as well as with Jem/Abigail). In 1x10, though, what we see is Alder mostly using the collaboration way of being powerful, utilizing the coordination of the Biddies to pull off highly complex Work. This is why I played with the idea that maybe Alder wasn't even that powerful by herself, but just rode off of the novelty value of revealing Work to the public at all, and then just having increasing experience advantage over time, and then the Biddies giving her further edge. But if she unleashed her piece of the First Song on the scaffold, then it probably was a truly powerful storm that she unleashed. Still, there is something to be said for the fact that power wouldn't really be the thing that carried her for 300+ years. I once compared Alder to a sports team coach already, and that would remain apt. In a basketball AU, Alder would have to be good enough to make it into the NBA and a regular, but that doesn't mean she had to be one of the headlining stars during that time before becoming a coach of a legendary roster afterwards. It would be more about her ability to direct. To see what the strategy and tactics should be, to make the troops under her understand that vision, and to cultivate those troops' potential in order to execute that vision to the best of their ability. To overcome cultural conventions around secrecy in favor of standardization and optimization of the Work with the most utility, developing the best training and educational programs to outfit the troops and officers. And more on the admin side of things, it would be about her ability to handle the politics, both within her own organization and with the external parties. Not just in fending off challengers for her position, but in ways that don't compromise the military operations. The 1700s were already beyond the time of generals leading as warriors from the front (although witch powers complicate that transition, of course), where a leader's resource management ability was the better indication of success than how they would do in a combat bracket. That's why I'm a bit sad that the show ultimately shoots down my idea of an Alder who isn't actually that powerful, but nonetheless becomes the greatest witch of all time because she was able to inspire the real heavy hitters to follow her command, to organize and maintain a large institution. (And then developing the power hacks she needed over time to stop bluffing in the field.)

Charting the Course to SAP HANA Cloud
The push towards SAP HANA cloud shift stems from the need for agility and responsiveness in a dynamic business climate. The cloud promises reduced infrastructure expenses, robust data analytics, and the nimbleness to address changing needs quickly. However, for many companies, transitioning from on-premise SAP HANA to the cloud involves navigating concerns around data security, performance, and potentially relinquishing control of business-critical ERP systems.
SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud: A Tailored Offering
In light of these challenges, SAP presented the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC), a private cloud service designed expressly for mission-critical workloads. HEC advertises no compromise on performance, integration, security, failover, or disaster recovery. It spotlights versatility, strong customer support, and end-to-end coverage - from strategic planning to application management. This offering intends to provide the cloud’s agility and innovation under SAP’s direct guidance and expertise.
Actual Delivery of HANA Enterprise Cloud
Despite SAP’s messaging, the HEC’s delivery involves a consortium of third-party providers, including HPE, IBM, CenturyLink, Dimension Data, and Virtustream. SAP collaborates with these partners, who bid on projects often awarded to the lowest bidder, to leverage specialized capabilities while upholding SAP’s standards.
Weighing the Pros and Cons
Partnering with competent vendors ensures clients receive secure, best-practice SAP hosting and support. HEC’s comprehensive solution integrates licensing, infrastructure, and support with touted scalability and integration.
However, several customer challenges emerge. Firstly, leveraging SAP’s brand for cloud hosting and SAP managed services risks diminishing anticipated cost savings. Secondly, the lack of direct engagement with third-party providers raises concerns about entrusting critical ERP operations to unseen partners. This dynamic obscures visibility and control over SAP HANA migration and management.
Furthermore, the absence of a direct relationship between SAP HANA users and cloud suppliers may complicate support, especially for urgent issues warranting rapid response. While SAP’s ecosystem aims to guarantee quality and security, intermediation can hinder the timely resolution of critical situations, affecting system uptime and operations.
SAP HANA Cloud: A Strategic Decision
As SAP systems become increasingly vital, migrating SAP HANA is not simply a technical or operational choice but a strategic one. SAP HANA transcends a database or software suite – it constitutes a competitive advantage that, when optimized, can spur tremendous innovation and success. This migration necessitates meticulous planning, execution, and governance to ensure the transition empowers rather than compromises SAP HANA’s strategic value.
In this context, selecting the ideal cloud model and service providers represents critical decisions. Companies must scrutinize partners beyond cost, evaluating track records, SAP skills, security protocols, and the aptitude to deliver personalized, responsive service.
The Future SAP HANA Cloud Trajectory
As we advance into 2024, the SAP DATA Cloud Analytics landscape continues evolving. Innovations in cloud technology, security, and service creation provide new prospects for migration planning. Firms must stay updated on cloud service advancements, SAP’s strategic direction, and cloud shift best practices to navigate this transition successfully.
To accomplish this, companies should:
Collaborate cross-functionally to align SAP HANA cloud plans with broader business goals and technology roadmaps.
Ensure chosen cloud environments and suppliers meet rigorous data security, privacy, and regulatory standards.
Assess infrastructure ability to support SAP HANA performance requirements and scale amid fluctuating demands.
Institute clear governance and support structures for effective issue resolution throughout and post-migration.
Transitioning SAP HANA to the cloud is complex but ultimately rewarding, unlocking efficiency, agility, and innovation when executed deliberately. By weighing the strategic, operational, and technical dynamics, businesses can drive this migration smoothly, fully capturing SAP HANA’s power to fuel future prosperity.

Lockheed endorses new engines for the F-35, even after USAF suspends this update
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/23/23/23 - 09:55am Military
Lockheed Martin, manufacturer of the F-35, thinks that the Pentagon should reverse course and seek the more expensive but technologically advanced Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP) for future versions of the fighter, instead of the more incremental upgrade of the F135 engine core chosen by the U.S. Air Force in its 2024 Budget.
A Lockheed Martin official said the manufacturer is ready to “support and continue to work with the U.S. government on capacity and performance upgrades, including an engine upgrade, which best meets its requirements for the F-35 in the coming decades.”
However, AETP engines – each developed by GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney – will provide more power and cooling capacity than Pratt & Whitney's Engine Core Upgrade (ECU), “which is needed as we modernize the F-35 beyond Block 4,” the spokesman said.
It is the first time that the main contractor of the F-35 has evaluated the ongoing debate on how to provide the necessary increase in power and cooling for the Block 4 version of the stealth fighter. The government grants contracts for the F135 engine separately from the structure of the F-35, and the engine is supplied to Lockheed as government-supplied equipment.
Tumblr media
In an evaluation of the F135 released in May, the Office of Government Responsibility (GAO) stated that "the cooling system is overloaded, requiring the engine to operate beyond its design parameters. The extra heat is increasing engine wear, reducing its service life and adding $38 billion in maintenance costs."
The GAO also urged the F-35 Joint Program Office to build a better business case to upgrade the F-35 engine, although it agreed that the ECU is the least expensive and least risky approach.
The Lockheed employee noted that the F-35 fleet should serve by 2070, "which will require more updates". To stay ahead of the projected threats, "the F-35 will need even greater capacity, readiness, range and thrust, which will require an updated engine".
Tumblr media
Greg Ulmer, executive vice president of aeronautics at Lockheed, told Breaking Defense in an interview at the Paris Air Show that he thinks it is "myopic" of the government to abandon the AETP option when it will not only provide greater power and cooling for Block 4 of the fighter, but also for future versions.
"I think there are elements within the Pentagon speaking in the sense that there will be a Block 5 and a Block 6, and there will be other considerations in the future," Ulmer said.
Pentagon officials said that the choice of the ECU was motivated by its lower development cost and the fact that a new engine would force the creation of a new logistics train. But the cost suggested by Ulmer should be less important than dealing with threats and major power and cooling upgrades will probably be needed in the future anyway.
Neither Ulmer nor the Lockheed spokesman endorsed a specific AETP engine for the F-35.
Under AETP, a technology development effort administered by the U.S. Air Force, GE Aerospace developed the XA100 and Pratt developed the XA101, both using third-flow bypass airflow to develop engines that would be more efficient in both on-demand thrust and cruise.
Tumblr media
However, Pratt successfully advocated an upgrade of the engine core to its F135 engine, which would slightly improve the performance of the F-35, but not to the extent that an AETP engine would. The two AETP engines offer about 30% more range than the current F135 engine of the F-35, along with approximately 20% more acceleration and twice the cooling power.
On the other hand, an AETP engine would probably not fit in the F-35B STOVL (Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing) version of the fighter, which means that the U.S. Air Force would have to pay the cost of a new engine alone.
In budget briefings earlier this year, USAF Secretary Frank Kendall said he was disappointed with the choice of ECU, but agreed that it was the best for the Department of Defense in general, noting that "you can't do everything you want".
The choice of the ECU instead of an AETP option effectively gave Pratt a continuous monopoly on the work of the F-35 engine.
Tumblr media
However, the U.S. Air Force maintained the AETP development program, as the service said it will provide the base capacity for the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter. The new engine development effort is called the Next Generation Advanced Propulsion (NGAP) program.
The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers (Republican of Alabama), added $588 million to AETP as part of his marking for the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024, in order to preserve the F-35 engine options.
In a statement, Pratt & Whitney said that AETP is now “a technology program that will power the sixth-generation hunting platforms”. He criticized Lockheed's comments, saying that the F-35 manufacturer “wants to put an unproven adaptive engine into a single-engine jet fighter, regardless of the large cost and significant delay in delivering critical capabilities to the combatant at a time of urgent need.”
Lockheed's push for AETP “undermines the decision of the Department of Defense to move forward with the upgrade of the F135 engine core, a decision that has been studied, validated, sent and fully funded in the government budget,” said a Pratt spokesman.
Tumblr media
“Block 5 does not exist as a defined set of resources at this time,” the spokesman added. “But regardless of which block we are discussing, the F135 ECU paired with an updated PTMS [thermal and power management system] can provide 80 kilowatts or more of cooling power for the F-35, which will exceed all power and cooling needs for the F-35 during the life of the program.”
In its own statement, GE said that adaptive engines “represent the future of combat engines that will power the air force in the coming decades”. GE worked with Lockheed "to ensure that our engine is optimized for the needs of its platform today and in the future. The continuity of AETP ensures that this technology can be matured to completion, establishing a usable model for future needs and programs".
The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, in an upcoming report, says that AETP offers “a much more aggressive solution” to the growing power and cooling needs of the F-35.
“Congress is reassessing the issue,” said retired Lieutenant General David Deptula, dean of the Mitchell Institute. "It's an incredibly difficult choice, with Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall commenting: 'If we had the opportunity to reconsider this, I think it would be something I would like to have another chance.'"

How Financial Analytics is Revolutionizing the Finance Industry
Tumblr media
In today's fast-paced financial world, data analytics is no longer a luxury—it's a necessity. Whether it's investment banking, risk management, fraud detection, or financial forecasting, analytics plays a critical role in shaping financial strategies. By leveraging data-driven insights, financial institutions, corporations, and investors can make more informed decisions, optimize operations, and drive profitability. In this article, we explore how analytics is used in finance and why learning this skill can be a game-changer for professionals. We'll also highlight the benefits of enrolling in the best Investment Banking Course offered by the Boston Institute of Analytics.
The Power of Financial Analytics
Financial analytics involves processing and interpreting data to uncover trends, predict future outcomes, and enhance decision-making. By integrating statistical models, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, finance professionals can analyze large datasets with precision. This allows businesses to improve investment strategies, mitigate risks, and enhance customer experiences.
With cutting-edge technology evolving rapidly, financial analytics is becoming a must-have skill for anyone looking to succeed in the finance industry. Whether you're working in banking, corporate finance, or asset management, mastering data analytics can set you apart.
How Analytics is Used in Finance
1. Smarter Investment Strategies
Investment banking and asset management rely heavily on analytics. By assessing historical market trends, macroeconomic indicators, and company performance, financial analysts can make more informed investment decisions. Predictive models help identify promising stocks, optimize portfolio diversification, and enhance overall return on investment.
Additionally, algorithmic trading—an advanced form of analytics—uses automated systems to execute trades at optimal prices. This high-frequency trading strategy helps financial firms maximize profits while minimizing risks.
2. Risk Assessment and Management
Risk management is a crucial function in finance, and analytics has revolutionized how risks are assessed. Financial institutions use sophisticated models to evaluate credit risks, market risks, and operational risks.
For example, banks use analytics to determine whether a borrower is likely to default on a loan. Credit scoring models analyze past financial behaviour, debt-to-income ratios, and other factors to provide risk assessments. Meanwhile, financial organizations rely on Value at Risk (VaR) calculations to estimate potential losses in volatile market conditions.
3. Fraud Detection and Cybersecurity
With increasing digital transactions, financial fraud has become a major concern. Analytics plays a vital role in detecting fraudulent activities by analyzing transaction patterns and identifying anomalies. Machine learning algorithms can flag suspicious behaviour, allowing financial institutions to act quickly and prevent financial losses.
For example, if a customer’s spending pattern suddenly deviates from their usual behaviour, the system can automatically trigger security alerts or block the transaction until further verification is done.
4. Financial Forecasting and Budgeting
Accurate financial forecasting enables businesses to plan their budgets and allocate resources effectively. Data analytics helps predict revenue streams, optimize cash flows, and anticipate market shifts.
Time series analysis and AI-powered forecasting tools enable companies to make data-backed financial decisions. For instance, businesses can predict seasonal revenue fluctuations and adjust their marketing or investment strategies accordingly.
5. Algorithmic and High-Frequency Trading
Algorithmic trading, also known as algo trading, has revolutionized financial markets by using data analytics to execute trades with speed and precision. By analyzing market conditions, price trends, and news sentiment, trading algorithms make split-second decisions that maximize gains while minimizing risks.
AI-driven trading systems are also capable of self-learning, meaning they improve their trading strategies over time based on market performance and historical data.
6. Customer Insights and Personalization
Banks and financial service providers are increasingly using analytics to enhance customer experience. By analyzing transaction history, demographics, and behavioural data, they can offer personalized financial products and services.
For example, predictive analytics helps banks identify potential loan defaulters early and proactively offer solutions such as restructuring repayment plans or suggesting alternative financial products that better suit the customer’s needs.
Why Learning Financial Analytics is Essential
With the financial landscape becoming more data-driven, professionals who understand financial analytics are in high demand. Mastering analytics tools like Python, R, SQL, and Excel can help you land lucrative roles in investment banking, financial risk management, and corporate finance.
Boston Institute of Analytics’ Best Investment Banking Course
If you’re looking to build expertise in financial analytics, the Boston Institute of Analytics (BIA) offers the best Investment Banking Course in Thane tailored to equip students with in-depth knowledge of finance, investment strategies, and data-driven decision-making.

The 4-Hour Timeframe & Adaptive Algorithms: The Underground Playbook for Precision Trading The Secret Sauce of the 4-Hour Timeframe (Why Most Traders Miss It) If you’re still stuck in the land of 1-minute charts, frantically clicking buttons like a gamer in a Call of Duty deathmatch, it’s time for an upgrade. The 4-hour timeframe is the unsung hero of Forex trading—long enough to filter out the noise, yet short enough to capture powerful market moves. Why the 4-Hour Timeframe Works: - Reduces Market Noise: Say goodbye to the whiplash of tiny price swings that wreck your nerves. - Perfect for Swing & Intraday Trading: A sweet spot that captures both momentum and reversals. - Institutional Footprint: Smart money operates on this timeframe—follow the big players, not the noise. But here’s where it gets really interesting. To truly unlock its potential, we need to blend it with adaptive algorithms. Adaptive Algorithms: The AI Power Move You Should Be Using Imagine having an AI assistant that adapts to market shifts better than your buddy adapting his excuses for why he missed a trade. That’s the power of adaptive algorithms—they adjust dynamically to volatility, trend strength, and liquidity shifts. How Adaptive Algorithms Give You the Edge: - Auto-Adjusts to Market Conditions: Unlike static indicators that fail when markets change, adaptive algorithms shift in real-time. - Eliminates Human Emotion: No more gut-feeling trades based on ‘it just looks like it should go up.’ - Optimized Entry & Exit Points: Increased precision, lower drawdowns. Now, let’s get into the ninja tactics of merging the 4-hour timeframe with adaptive algorithms. The Underrated 4-Hour Strategy: The Algorithmic Sweet Spot Step 1: Identify Institutional Zones Institutions operate on higher timeframes. Adaptive algorithms scan for volume clusters and price imbalances—areas where smart money is likely to step in. Tools to Use: - Volume Profile Analysis: Shows where institutions are placing their bets. - Order Flow Data: Look for shifts in buying/selling pressure. Step 2: Adaptive Trend Filtering Forget moving averages that lag harder than a dial-up connection. Instead, use adaptive moving averages (AMA), which adjust dynamically based on volatility. Pro Tip: Combine an AMA with an adaptive RSI filter to time precision entries. Step 3: Dynamic Risk Management Risk management is where 90% of traders fail. Adaptive algorithms help by adjusting your position sizing and stop losses in real time. How to Do It: - Use Adaptive ATR Stops: Instead of a fixed stop loss, let the ATR dynamically adjust based on market conditions. - Position Sizing Adjustments: Scale in and out based on adaptive risk-to-reward calculations. The Secret Weapon: Combining AI with Human Intelligence No matter how powerful your algorithm, you still need a human touch. The best traders blend AI-driven analysis with their own pattern recognition skills. Example: - Algorithm identifies a high-probability setup. - You validate it using price action and market context. - Trade execution is automated for precision. Real-World Results: Adaptive Algorithms in Action According to a 2023 study by the Bank for International Settlements, adaptive algorithms outperform traditional indicators by over 27% in volatile markets. Major hedge funds, including Renaissance Technologies, use machine learning-driven adaptive systems to stay ahead of retail traders. Next Steps: Mastering Adaptive Algorithm Trading Want to go from amateur to algorithmic assassin? Start with these: - Forex News & Market Insights – Get real-time updates. - Free Forex Courses – Learn adaptive algorithm strategies. - Join the Elite Trading Community – Get access to expert analysis and alerts. - Smart Trading Tool – Optimize your strategy with AI-driven insights. Final Takeaways (Elite Trader Checklist) ✅ Use the 4-hour timeframe to filter noise and capture institutional moves. ✅ Implement adaptive algorithms for precision trading and market adaptability. ✅ Combine AI with human expertise for the ultimate edge. ✅ Leverage risk management tools that adjust dynamically. ✅ Stay ahead of the curve by joining an elite trading network. —————– Image Credits: Cover image at the top is AI-generated Read the full article
