Andreas Pietschmann in Dark (2017) Zwischen der Zeit /In Between Time
S3E7
Across three centuries, residents of Winden continue their desperate quest to alter their fates and save their loved ones.
*This episode reveals that Silja had an important place in the family tree of the people of Winden. Originally known as the "Girl from the Future" who knocks Jonas unconscious at the end of season 1, it is now revealed that she was actually Bartosz's wife, Noah's mother, Tronte's grandmother, Egon's daughter, Claudia's half sister, Martha's great-great grandmother, Jonas's half sister & great-great-great grandmother and the unnamed's great-great-great-great-grandmother, yet she was "the girl from the future".

Period drama week 2023- Day 1: Favourite adaptation(s).
a) The North Yorkshire lass in me can't not say all creatures great and small for at least one (both the 1978 and 2020 versions). More modern than most would think of for periods, but I think pre ww2 can still be called period. Great shows, casting, acting, theme song, everything... the whole show just feels like home and hugs.

b) Pride and prejudice (1995 version), bit cliche I know but can't argue with a classic. Acting, costume, great representations of characters. It's all round gold.

So many many more I want to list. Too many!

so I'm on this app, Marco Polo, where you stay in touch with people by means of sending video messages. (there are probably other features, but I'm a free user, so I remain blissfully ignorant of them.) mostly I use it to annoy my sister. ("BITCH WHAT IF I GOT A PHALLOPLASTY AND HAD A BABY SHOWER FOR MY DICK. WE COULD HAVE ZUCCHINI FRITTERS. DICK-SHAPED PASTA. BANANAS FOSTER. DO U SEE MY VISION")
anyway, during the Hell Year of 2020, I saw my childhood best friend (let's call her Lee) was on this app. and like.
when I say "my childhood best friend", I mean the Weird Girl next door, who saw the Weird Girl that I was. I mean the girl I played with from age five until just shy of eleven, when my family moved away. I mean the girl I played with every day, for hours and hours, making up all kinds of elaborate scenarios involving our menagerie of stuffed animals. there were multiple overlapping, soap opera-style plotlines that lasted for years. there was drama. heartbreak. glory. she was the first friend I remember having. she was the first girl I ever loved, in my five-year-old way.
well, I hadn't seen Lee in at least 20 years and I was like, "holy shit! Lee!!!" so I sent her a "hey, nice to see you here, how you been" message.
again, this was late 2020.
now, I had been on T for a scant three months when I sent the first message, so I was a mere baby child, relative to the gruff manly man I am now. no beard, my voice had only started to wobble, still had tits... you get it. keep this in mind, it'll be important later.
I never heard back from her, but we're both Old, so I was like "eh, she probably forgot she installed the app" and forgot about it. we'd exchanged text messages at some point during the Hell Year, but like many people my age she doesn't really text, and I'm not calling anyone if I don't have to, so our communication had been sporadic, at best.
well. today I got a notification that she sent me a reply on Marco Polo.
I figured, well, she's replying to me 3.5 years late, but better late than never. I have ADHD and no friendship degradation mechanic, so I'm excited! yay! friend! :D
and then I remember. "...oh shit. she doesn't know I'm trans."
so. the thing is. I'm from Mississippi, which is. very very fucking conservative. I know Lee grew up Southern Baptist. I also know she's still living in the same town where we grew up and where she eventually graduated from high school and college. last I checked she was still attending the same Southern Baptist church where she grew up and her remaining living parent is still living in Lee's childhood home.
so this is either going to be Fine or it's going to be a disaster. lol.
in thinking it through, I figure either she's seen my updated profile pic, where I have the beard etc., or she hasn't. so either she's going to acknowledge this change or she isn't. okay. these are the possibilities. so I watch the message.
...the secret third option is... she seems to not realize when I sent the message? "sorry, I missed this when I was at work!" girl. what? I mean, you probably did miss it while you were at work... three and a half years ago. possibly she meant to reply to someone else and got me instead?
whatever. who knows. doesn't matter.
because I have the opportunity to do the funniest fucking thing in the world now

writing tips
cultivate the no-mind, a state of emptiness in which you can easily become a vessel for creative forces outside of your control or understanding. The Buddha nature is the first step to being a writer
cultivate your own style by reading other people who do what you want to do and living eternally in their shadow. Your voice should be a totally unique imitation of people you will never measure up to
you'd be surprised how far a solid pushup bra will get you. how do you think steven king got so big? honkers, baby
anyone who edits your work is a parasite in your perfect body. You should make them roll around in shit like a dog for your approval
they don't all have to be winners. Most writers never write anything good, and I'm told they live just fine; there's a sort of submissive dignity to it
"write drunk, edit sober" is 20th century advice. Best practices in the 2020s include amphetamines. Crank, ice, what have you
Don't write around the dialogue tags "said" and "asked". You will sound like a Hardy Boys novel the entire time. If you're doing a Hardy Boys novel ignore this advice and only this advice, as it would be a disaster to write a Hardy Boys novel without tweaking off your tits
An important principle of ancient Greek drama was hubris - that humans' pride would leave them with no choice but to defy the will of the gods and be destroyed by their own actions. While obviously things have changed a lot in the last 2000 years, hubris is still an indispensable part of the writing process today. If you don't have hubris, cultivate it
You're going to find money very difficult to come across, even in exchange for your best work. According to every expert in the field I've talked to, the solution to this is simple: destroy capitalism

what are your favourite catalan movies?
I'm going to be very mainstream here but I loved Casa en flames (A House On Fire) so much. I think it's the best movie I've seen this year 2024 (not best Catalan movie, I meant best movie of any nationality). Btw, this movie is now available on Netflix with English subtitles! It's a comedy-drama about a family that meets in their holiday home before selling it and all the problems and secrets are brought up, revealing the character's insecurities. It's very well written and shows again how Emma Vilarasau is such an amazing actress.
Tumblr media
Another movie I absolutely adored was El mestre que va prometre el mar (The Teacher Who Promised the Sea). I doubted on including this one as Catalan movie or not because it's a Catalan production with a Catalan actor as main character representing a real Catalan man, but the movie is mostly in Spanish since most of the events take part in Spain and not in Catalonia, but I think it still counts. Either way, it's a beautiful movie and definitely my favourite movie of 2023. It's explained from the view of a woman who wants to find out what happened to her grandfather's family and ends up visiting a mass grave being dug up in central Spain (context note: the state of Spain is the 2nd country in the world —after Cambodia— with a highest number of disappeared people because of all the people in mass graves during the civil war and the early years of the dictatorship, thousands of families are still looking for their relatives). It leads her to uncover the real story of Antoni Benaiges, a teacher from Catalonia who was sent to teach in the landlocked Spanish countryside in the early 1930s (pre-Civil War). It's a very heartwarming antifascist story about what a teacher can be, about children's freedom, and a reminder of the importance of historical memory. I really recommend everyone to watch it. (The movie can be streamed in Movistar+ and rented in many other international platforms.)
Tumblr media
Other Catalan movies that I liked a lot are La Vampira de Barcelona and Salvador.
La Vampira de Barcelona (The Barcelona Vampiress) (2020) is a thriller with drama and some horror based on the real story of a woman who lived in Raval (poor quarter in Barcelona) who was accused of being a serial killer kidnapping children to use their blood in the early 1900s. I really liked this movie because I think we've all heard the legend but here the filmmakers went for a more historically-accurate version of what happened and how she was used, with a strong social critique, so it was a very interesting take on the story. It talks about very heavy topics though including children kidnapped to be forced to prostitution. (It looks like in some countries it's on Prime Video but I don't know what subtitles or dubbing it has been.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Salvador (2006) is a biopic showing the events that led the 25-year-old Catalan anarchist Salvador Puig Antich to be sentenced to death in 1974. It's been years since I watched it now, but I remember when I saw it as a teenager it impacted me greatly even though I already knew the story. (The whole movie is on YouTube but without English subtitles, for streaming platforms it's on Filmin but it looks like it doesn't have English subtitles either, but there are downloadable subtitles online.)
