Weight Loss Tips For Pcos
PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is referred to a condition in which cysts develop on the ovaries. Between 4–20% of women in their reproductive phase of life may suffer from this condition. This condition is characterised by hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance, inflammation, etc. All these together can make weight loss difficult, especially for those women who also have thyroid disorders. PCOS is also the leading cause of infertility in women.
Following are some tips for losing weight with PCOS:
Reducing carbohydrate intake
PCOS is often associated with insulin resistance (35% to 80% cases). In insulin resistance, the cells of the body are unable to absorb glucose from blood in normal amounts, leading to high blood sugar levels. This in turn can lead to higher conversion of sugar to fat in the body and weight gain. Reducing simple carbohydrates intake can directly lead to lowering of insulin levels, thereby reducing carb conversion to fat. At the same time, consuming a low GI (glycemic index) diet reduces insulin resistance and fat storage around the belly area.
Increase protein intake
Protein intake has been shown to improve blood sugar management by giving a feeling of fullness for longer. In addition, it also helps in losing weight. But remember that total protein intake should not exceed more than 40% of total calorie intake, as very high intakes can cause increased stress on the kidneys.
Include nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are powerhouses of healthy fats, vitamins and minerals like omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, iron, selenium, etc. Seeds like pumpkin, sesame, flax and sunflower have been shown to bring about a balance between the reproductive hormones.
Reduce sugar consumption
Refined sugar, jaggery, honey all are high calorie foods with high glycemic indices and thus should be avoided. Added sugars also increase weight and insulin resistance. Research also shows that women with PCOS have higher blood sugar spikes on ingestion of sugar as compared to women without PCOS.
Get physically active
Exercise has been shown to help at multiple levels; be it weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, better hormonal health, etc. Therefore it is important to invest at least 30–40 minutes daily for exercise.
Get adequate sleep
Inadequate sleep increases levels of hormones like cortisol and ghrelin, that increase the feeling of hunger. It also leads to increased inflammation in the body. Our bodies carry out repair of damaged muscles and detoxification while we are asleep. Thus getting enough sleep is an important part of not just your weight loss, but also your health journey.
If you have PCOS and would like to lose weight, or improve your fertility, and are looking for help in planning and meal prep ideas, contact Kanupriya Khanna, one of the best Dietitian and Nutritionist in Delhi.

What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a hereditary disorder that affects the connective tissue in the skin, joints, and blood vessels. It is caused by a faulty gene that leads to a defect in collagen, proteins that add strength and flexibility to the connective tissue in your body.
The disorder can be passed from one parent to a child in either a dominant or recessive genetic inheritance pattern. Both types of the syndrome are caused by a defect in the collagen gene.
Most people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have very flexible and stretchy skin that can bruise easily. Some types of conditions cause abnormal scarring, as well.
Many types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome can cause easy bleeding or rupture (perforation) of a blood vessel or organ, such as the heart or large intestines. These complications can be fatal if not treated immediately.
Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
This type of Ehlers-Danlos causes a weakening of the wall of your heart's largest artery (aorta) and other large blood vessels throughout your body. It can also weaken your uterus or large intestines, so you may develop easy bruising, internal bleeding, a hole in the wall of your intestine (intestinal perforation), and stroke.
These vascular EDS symptoms can be more severe in children than adults. They can also develop kyphosis or scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine) and low bone mass.
Some forms of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome affect the clear covering of your eyes or cornea. They can lead to tearing or rupture of the cornea (bluish tint in the white part of your eyes) and retinal detachment. These eye problems can cause nearsightedness, blindness, and a bluish tint in your eyes.
Other types of Ehlers-Danlos can affect the muscles, bones, and fluid in your body. They can make it difficult to breathe and may lead to a blockage in the airway or lungs, such as a pneumothorax.
In most cases, these conditions are not serious and can be managed with medication or physical therapy. A healthcare team that understands each person's symptoms is key to managing Ehlers-Danlos.
A medical doctor, physical therapist, and dietitian are the primary providers for people with Ehlers-Danlos. These specialists can help you understand your condition and guide you through treatment and management strategies.
The best way to avoid a complication is to follow your doctor's recommendations for medication, monitoring, and physical activity. It's also important to discuss any underlying medical problems that may have an impact on your Ehlers-Danlos condition.
Pregnancy and Birth
Women with Ehlers-Danlos and a related hereditary syndrome called hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) should talk to their doctors about managing pregnancy. This includes discussing the risks to a woman and her unborn child and understanding the options for family planning.
During pregnancy, a woman who has Ehlers-Danlos and HSD should be monitored closely for complications. During delivery, the baby can become distressed and have trouble breathing.
Most children with Ehlers-Danlos have an inherited tendency to sprain or dislocate their joints. In rare cases, this can lead to broken bones or a spinal cord injury. Fortunately, these injuries are very rare in children with Ehlers-Danlos.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome cause is a genetic defect in the body's connective tissue. These connective tissues provide support and structure to your body's organs, bones, blood vessels, and skin. These tissues are made of collagen, a protein that is essential for healthy joints and cartilage.
People with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome have abnormal collagen. This can weaken the connections in the body's tissues, which makes them unable to keep their shape and flexibility.
It also can make them more prone to injury and other problems, like joint pain, premature aging due to sun exposure, and slow-healing cuts, bruises, or wounds. This can lead to a lot of frustration for people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and their families.
There are 13 types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, each characterized by its own set of symptoms. Doctors classify them based on their most notable features and the parts of the body where symptoms appear.
Type I – Hypermobile (hEDS)
The most common form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is hEDS, which causes overly flexible joints and soft, velvety skin. It is caused by a gene mutation that changes the way collagen is made in your body.
Your doctor will examine your joints and skin to determine if you have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. If you do have this condition, your doctor may refer you to a genetic specialist.

CW: brief mention of eating disorder communities
Not a registered dietitian, but I majored in food science so I know BASIC nutrition. (empashis on basic, nutritional science is a whole separate degree)
Yes the replies are funny, and I know we all need a laugh right now, & most of us recognize this as being ridiculous. I'm chuckling too.
But we as a culture also encourage people (especially women, but also men) to starve themselves to be thin. I remember pro-ana being a common tag in weight loss circles, & thinspo. I also know several people who struggled with eating disorders (including men- not a bash on women, but men do get overlooked in this topic).
This type of thinking is dumb because we ARE meant to eat everyday. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE IN PUBERTY. The mechanisms we have evolved, such as ketosis (the state people strive to be for keto) are there for times of famine. Maintaining homeostasis, generating all the thousands of chemical reactions in your body, fighting foreign bacteria, replenishing cells/ blood/ tissue/ etc - that all uses up energy. Energy you need to replenish. If you've grown up impoverished or had a few bad months where you're living on Ramen, you can FEEL it. Inability to focus, tiring easily, just wanting to sleep. Your body doesn't WANT to be in that state. It WANTS calories, it wants nutrients. It wants to live. (I'm separating body & mind here.) We need fat to live. The past 100 years is the FIRST time in human history where a decent chunk of the population isn't constantly worrying about starvation, those primal instincts about needing to put on weight just in case aren't going anywhere. Societal beauty trends can fuck themselves.
So please remember to do your best to eat & take care of yourself. And I mean YOUR best; if that means eating a slice of 80 cent white bread, or beans, or pasta, then so be it. If you have an eating disorder, I know several people who have overcome multiple disorders. It is possible to enjoy life, be healthy & attractive, and eat what you want. You deserve to be happy & have access to health.

Risks and the Best Ways to Manage Gestational Diabetes in High-Risk Pregnancy
A pregnant woman with gestational diabetes has high blood sugar levels, which usually arise during pregnancy and go away after giving birth. Healthcare professionals, particularly those working in high-risk obstetrics, should be aware of the dangers of GDM and know how to successfully manage it. Let’s examine the main dangers and some useful care techniques.
What dangers does gestational diabetes pose?
Maternal risks: A woman with gestational diabetes has a number of difficulties. Her pregnancy becomes more complicated as conditions like preeclampsia and high blood pressure develop. Additionally, there is a higher likelihood of requiring a cesarean section and a higher chance of type 2 diabetes in later life.
Risks to the fetus: Excessive development in the unborn child might result from high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. We call it macrosomia. This may cause issues during giving birth. Close observation is necessary since newborns may also have respiratory distress or low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Long-term risks: After birth, gestational diabetes may still have an impact. Children born to mothers with GDM may be more likely to grow up to be obese and to have type 2 diabetes. Early detection and treatment of this illness are therefore essential.
Techniques for management
Early diagnosis and screening: It’s critical to screen for GDM as soon as possible. Between weeks 24 and 28, all pregnant women should get screened, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
Lifestyle changes and nutritional management: Working with a qualified dietitian can assist in developing customized meal plans that will stabilize blood sugar levels. To improve insulin sensitivity, patients should be encouraged to engage in regular physical exercise, such as walking.
Blood glucose monitoring: It’s critical to teach patients how to keep an eye on their own blood sugar levels. Verify that they comprehend their objectives and how to modify their food and exercise regimens properly.
Pharmacological intervention: When lifestyle changes are not enough, pharmacological treatment may be required. It may be beneficial to use oral hypoglycemic medications or insulin therapy. Frequent follow-ups are essential for assessing the effectiveness of treatment.
In high-risk obstetrics, gestational diabetes is a serious worry, but you can genuinely improve your patients’ lives if you use the appropriate techniques. StudyHRO is available to assist healthcare professionals who want to improve their ability to handle high-risk obstetric patients. Our professionally taught courses are intended to give you the information you require.

Oh Baby! Achieving a healthy pregnancy after bariatric surgery
Finding out you’re pregnant is a big moment. For some it will spark excitement and joy; for others it will bring anxiety and fear; for most, it will be somewhere in between.
Whatever you’re feeling, one thing is for sure – pregnancy adds a pile of new things to the to-do list.
While booking an appointment with your GP, finding yourself a team of midwives and doctors and perhaps a doula to support you through pregnancy and birth feels like a no-brainer, going to see a dietitian might not even be on your radar.
Research shows that mum’s nutritional status prior to conception and what she eats during pregnancy has a huge impact on a baby’s growth and development, yet it is not common practice to get expert advice from a pre-natal dietitian when planning a family. Optimising mum’s nutritional status before conceiving is especially important if she has had bariatric surgery, as surgery has significant implications for her nutritional requirements and ability to meet them.
It is advised that women wait 12 – 18 months to fall pregnant following bariatric surgery to allow their weight to stabilise. However, the hormonal shifts that occur with significant weight loss often mean women find themselves more fertile than they were before surgery.
While there are many benefits to achieving a healthy weight prior to pregnancy, bariatric surgery comes with the risk of nutritional deficiencies on its own without the added nutritional demands of pregnancy. What’s more, babies born to mothers post bariatric surgery are at increased risk of fetal growth restriction, being small for gestational age, pre-term birth, still birth, congenital abnormalities and NICU admission. To help avoid these complications, it makes sense to get expert nutritional support which has benefits for both mum and baby.
If you are a woman who has had bariatric surgery and are hoping to start a family, there is great benefit in adding a pre-natal dietitian to your pregnancy care team. Pregnancy is perhaps the most important time in a woman’s life to eat well, so get in touch and find out how we can help you and your baby have the best possible start with tailored nutrition advice that works for you.

Pregnancy After Bariatric Surgery: Benefits and Health Implications
Bariatric surgery is a life-changing procedure that offers a way to healthier living for people struggling with obesity. Alongside significant weight loss, this surgical intervention can restore fertility, reduce pregnancy-related complications, and improve overall well-being. However, navigating pregnancy after bariatric surgery requires careful planning, monitoring, and collaboration with a bariatric surgeon in Ahmedabad to ensure the safety of both mother and child. In this article, we will explore the benefits, challenges, and practical considerations of pregnancy post-surgery, empowering women to embrace this transformative journey with confidence.
Benefits of pregnancy after bariatric surgery:
Enhanced fertility:
Obesity can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to infertility and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Bariatric surgery helps normalise these hormonal imbalances, improving ovulation and increasing the likelihood of conception. Studies show that post-surgery, many women experience restored reproductive health within months.
Healthier pregnancy outcomes:
Significant weight loss reduces the risks of pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and hypertension. These improvements not only promote maternal health but also ensure better conditions for fetal development. According to bariatric surgery lowers the likelihood of obesity-related pregnancy complications, leading to healthier babies.
Reduced neonatal risks:
Pregnancies at higher weights can result in macrosomia (large baby size), which can lead to delivery complications. Post-bariatric surgery pregnancies show lower incidences of such risks, increasing the chances of a smooth delivery process.
Improved lifestyle for motherhood:
Weight loss achieved through bariatric surgery can enhance physical mobility, energy levels, and mental health, helping women manage the physical demands of pregnancy and motherhood.
Key considerations and health implications:
Optimal timing for pregnancy:
A bariatric surgeon in Ahmedabad recommends waiting at least 12 to 18 months after bariatric surgery before attempting conception. This period allows for the stabilisation of rapid weight loss and nutritional levels. They suggest conceiving too early may increase risks for both mother and baby due to unstable nutrient levels.
Addressing nutritional deficiencies:
Bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass, can limit the absorption of essential nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin D, and B12. These nutrients are essential for fetal development, and deficiencies may lead to complications like anaemia or low birth weight. Regular blood tests and targeted supplementation help mitigate these risks.
Weight management during pregnancy:
While maintaining a healthy weight post-surgery is vital, gaining the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy is equally important. A bariatric surgeon in Ahmedabad uses body mass index (BMI) and other metrics to determine optimal weight gain for a healthy pregnancy.
Increased monitoring for potential risks:
Despite its benefits, pregnancy after weight loss surgery Ahmedabad can pose unique challenges, such as intestinal block or dumping syndrome. Regular check-ups and coordinated care between bariatric specialists and obstetricians ensure early detection and intervention.
Best practices for a healthy post-surgery pregnancy
Comprehensive prenatal care:
Collaboration between bariatric surgeons, dietitians, and obstetricians is paramount. This multidisciplinary approach ensures nutritional adequacy, optimal weight management, and monitoring of any complications.
Nutritional optimisation:
Post-surgery, women should follow a nutrient-dense diet rich in protein, fibre, and vitamins. Including foods like lean meats, dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified cereals can help meet increased nutritional demands during pregnancy.
Supplements and vitamins:
Specialised prenatal vitamins are designed for bariatric patients to balance any deficiencies. Iron, folic acid, calcium, and vitamin D are emphasised to support maternal and fetal health.
Hydration and meal planning:
With reduced stomach capacity, staying hydrated and consuming smaller, frequent meals can help prevent nausea and dumping syndrome. Monitoring sugar intake is extremely important for avoiding sudden drops in blood sugar levels.
Engaging in safe physical activity:
Regular low-impact exercises, such as walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga, improve circulation, reduce stress, and support overall well-being during pregnancy.
Emotional support and counselling:
Adjusting to pregnancy after weight loss surgery Ahmedabad can bring emotional challenges, including body image concerns and dietary changes. Accessing counselling or support groups can help manage these transitions effectively.
Challenges and how to overcome them:
Mental health adjustments:
Post-surgery pregnancies can be emotionally demanding due to hormonal changes and evolving body image. Seeking mental health support and maintaining open communication with loved ones can ease this transition.
Managing morning sickness:
Bariatric surgery patients may experience heightened morning sickness. Eating small, bland meals and staying hydrated can help relieve symptoms.
Addressing dumping syndrome:
Rapid sugar intake can cause nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Avoiding sugary foods and focusing on protein-rich meals can prevent this condition.
Monitoring for complications:
Rare complications, such as intestinal obstruction, require immediate attention. Understanding warning signs like severe abdominal pain or unexplained nausea ensures timely medical intervention.
Conclusion
Pregnancy after bariatric surgery is a remarkable journey marked by restored health and enhanced fertility. With proper planning, medical supervision, and lifestyle adjustments, women can experience safe pregnancies and healthy outcomes. By prioritising nutritional health, timing pregnancies wisely, and leveraging support systems, mothers can navigate this life-changing chapter with confidence. Weight loss surgery Ahmedabad not only transforms physical health but also opens doors to fulfilling parenthood, proving that with the right approach, challenges can be overcome. For further guidance, consult our expert, Dr.Anand Patel, to make informed decisions about pregnancy post-surgery.
