x
The best thing about living in the apartment at the end of the hallway is that you’re far enough away from the other neighbors that you hear them. There is an apartment right across from you and one to your right which is at the very end. To your left is the stairwell as well as one to the right of the apartment across from you. So, besides those two apartments, there are stairs separating you from everyone else.
No one lives in the apartment across from you, and you’re pretty sure the person to your right is dead. You never hear him inside his place, and he never comes out. He must have his groceries delivered because you once saw someone drop them off, and the next hours or so, they were gone. It’s been quiet for nearly a year, and you hope it stays that way.
You’re sitting at your desk at work playing a game on your phone when you get a notification from your Ring doorbell. Movement. Out of curiosity, you open the app to see who might be in front of your place. Maybe it’s your Amazon package you’ve been impatiently waiting for.
It’s not Amazon, but it is a man you’ve never seen before. He’s bringing boxes into the apartment across from you.
“Huh, someone finally moved in,” you say.
“Is he hot?” your coworker who sits next to you, asks.
“I don’t know. All I see is back. It’s a hot back.”
“Let me see.”
Emily scoots her chair closer to you, and you angle your phone to show her. Her eyes widen and a smile breaks out on her face.
“Hubba hubba. That guy is hot.”
You look at your phone to see the man facing your camera. Hot doesn’t even begin to describe him. He’s not too bulky but not too lean, he has a trimmed beard, he’s tan, and he has cute bow legs. He’s going to be your neighbor? A taller man with shaggy hair steps out of the apartment and grabs the last box to bring inside.
“There’s two of them,” you smirk.
“Lucky bitch. My neighbors are either too old, married, or children.”
You’ve never wanted to get home as much as you do than in this moment. At the end of the workday, you practically jog to your car. You check the Ring Doorbell and see that the hallway is cleared of all boxes which means he’s all moved in, at least for now. You start your car and open your music app to pick a playlist when you get a notification from Ring.
You open the app to see the mysterious stranger standing in front of your door holding a Nerf gun. You press the button that allows you to talk to whoever is at the door. The stranger looks even more beautiful up close.
“Can I help you?”
“Yeah, hi. My name is Dean Winchester, and I just moved in across the hall. I have this tradition where I play Nerf wars with my neighbors. I’m just going to leave this here. Feel free to shoot me at any time.”
Dean sets the Nerf gun on the ground and walks to his door. He waves goodbye before entering his apartment. Okay, that’s a new one. It’s such a wholesome way to get to know your neighbors, so you’re not not liking it. You try not to speed the rest of the way home, and the Nerf gun is on the ground where Dean left it.
“This is so weird,” you mutter with a smile.
You pick up the gun and walk inside your apartment. As weird as this is, this is going to be fun. You’re very competitive. It’s Friday which means you can sleep in tomorrow because you don’t have to go back to work until Monday. You have forgotten about the Nerf gun until you see it on your kitchen counter. You walk over to the door and peer through the peephole, but there is nothing in the hallway.
You walk away from the door with a smirk, already forming a plan inside your head on how to get Dean. A few hours later, you’re sitting at your computer playing some games when you get a notification from Ring about movement at your front door. You open the app and see Dean approaching his door. You jump out of your seat and grab your Nerf gun on your way to the door.
There’s no better way to do this than to just go all in. You yank the door open and start shooting at him, and he jumps from the sudden intrusion. He finches back as if the bullets actually hurt, and he struggles to get his key in the door.
“Surrender! I’ve won this round!” you laugh and continue to shoot him.
He manages to pry his door open and grabs the Nerf gun sitting by his door. He turns and shoots at you but misses both times. You jump back with another laugh and run back into your apartment. Not only is Dean shocked at how beautiful you are, but he’s also surprised he actually got you to participate. Usually, his neighbors aren’t into this kind of thing.
You lost most of your bullets but it was worth it. He can hear your laughter come from inside your apartment, and he knows you’re watching him from your Ring doorbell.
“Alright,” he laughs. “Game on, sweetheart.”
Every time you and Dean get home, the other starts shooting. You bought a bunch of bullets from Amazon to keep your supply stocked, but you also grabbed the strays from your battles. This has been going on for weeks, and it’s honestly the highlight of your day. You’ve got some letters from the neighbor to your right about the noise, but you don’t think you’re being that loud. Plus, the police haven’t been called yet so you’re going to continue to have fun with Dean. One Friday night, you leave the apartment with your trash in hand. The only reason you’re going out is because you know Dean has his brother over.
You don’t think he’d interrupt his evening with his brother to get you, but you’re about to be proven wrong.
Dean’s door opens and he steps into the hallway with a gun in hand.
“Y/N!”
You barely have time to turn around before he’s shooting at you. You squeal and try to run away but think better of it and turn back to Dean. You swing the trash bag around to try and deflect some of the bullets, but most of them hit you. Dean jumps back into his apartment when you run after him.
“Not fair, Winchester! I’m unarmed,” you laugh.
Dean opens the door but holds up one hand to show you he’s calling a truce right now.
“If I win this next round, you gotta go on a date with me.”
“What if I win?”
He smirks and leans against the doorframe. “You’re not gonna win.”
“You’re going to feel bad when I do.” You turn to leave when Dean shoots your ass. “Oh, it’s on!”
You take the trash out and are on your way back when you spot Dean in front of the elevator when it opens. You didn't know that the next round would happen now.
“No, this isn’t fair!” you squeal.
He lunges at you but you dodge his attempts to hit you. You take off running down the hallway while laughing, and he runs after you. The logical thing would be to go inside your apartment, but you’re not thinking clearly. All you’re thinking about is getting the hell away from Dean. The first thing that pops into your head is to go inside his apartment.
“Why are you in my apartment?” he laughs. He opens the door and walks inside. “Get out of my apartment.”
“Truce, Dean,” you laugh.
“Okay, fine.”
You come out of hiding. “Really?”
Dean smirks and shoots you once in the stomach. “Nope. I win.”
“No, you cheated! That’s not fair!”
“There were no rules, sweetheart. So, I guess I’ll pick you up tomorrow at seven for dinner. Sounds good?”
You can’t help but smile at him. He’s making it so damn hard to be mad. Not like you were ever mad.
“Fine. Seven.”
Dean watches you enter your apartment with a smile. He can’t wait for tomorrow night. It’s all that’s going to be on both of your minds. Tomorrow comes faster than you think, and you’re just about ready for the date. You’re putting the finishing touches on your hair when you get a notification from Ring.
“Hey, I’m almost ready. I’ll be out in a minute,” you say into the app.
“I told you I was going to win,” he smirks.
You shake your head with a smile and pin up the last piece of hair. You’re dressed in a pastel pink silk shirt with black jeans that don’t look like jeans. You barely have on any makeup because it’s hot and you don’t want it to melt under the humidity. You grab your purse and join Dean in the hallway who takes a step back from shock at how good you look.
“You look… beautiful. Wow.”
“You’re not so bad yourself, Winchester,” you smile. “Where are going?”
“Somewhere woodsy.”
“I wore my good silk for this. Should I change?”
“We won’t be getting out of the car.”
“Okay.”
You turn to lead the way when you feel something hit your back. You gasp and turn to see Dean holding a smaller Nerf gun he must have been hiding in his jacket pocket. You lunge at him to playfully fight when Dean puts his hands up in defense.
“Shh, shh.” He points to the neighbor at the end of the hallway with his gun. “This neighbor fucking hates us.”
“He’s written me so many letters about us,” you chuckle.
“That wasn’t him. That was me.”
“You bitch,” you laugh.
Dean escorts you to the parking garage where a beautiful ‘67 Impala is. Normally, your dates are spent in a movie theater, a restaurant, or someone’s house. Never have you ever gotten takeout food and eaten it on a cliff overlooking the city. Dean is a lot of things but boring isn’t one of them. He’s nothing like your ex-boyfriends, but maybe that’s a good thing.
“So, I’m assuming that tall man I see you with is your brother?”
“Yeah. His name is Sam. We’re retired. He has a family while I’m just trying to keep busy.”
“Retired? You can’t be more than thirty-five. What did you do before?”
“Thirty-seven, actually. We traveled the country and helped people who needed it. You know, pests and stuff like that. We got a hefty inheritance from our family, so we are able to live on that.”
“You don’t have any hobbies or anything?” you ask and take a bite of food.
“I like working on cars. I got a job as a mechanic. What about you?”
“I work at a law firm as a criminal attorney. Or I’m trying to be one. I’m still in my internship at the firm. You know, shadowing people and getting to know the ropes. I just got my degree even at thirty-four.”
“It’s never too late to pursue your dreams.”
“You got that right.”
This date has been more interesting than any of the ones you’ve been on in the past because of Dean. You connect more with him than you have in all of your relationships. The date only lasts an hour, and Dean takes you back home. It’s nice living across the hallway from your date, but you hope the relationship doesn’t tank. It’ll suck if you have to see him when there is heartbreak.
“That was fun,” Dean grins.
“It was. I had a good time with you.”
You stand in front of your Ring camera and look up at Dean through your lashes. A moment passes before Dean pulls you in by your waist. He doesn’t have to ask permission to kiss you because you’re already leaning in. Sparks fly is such a cliche thing but it’s exactly what’s happening. Something awakens inside of you, something you’ve never felt before.
Part of you is glad you did this in front of your Ring camera so that you can replay this moment over and over again.
Though, the night wouldn’t be complete without a bit of sneaky fun. As you’re kissing him, you carefully take out the small Nerf gun you stored in your purse for this exact moment. You aim at his chest and fire, and he freezes when he feels the foam bullet. He pulls away with a shocked look on his face.
“You’re not winning the next round.”
Dean can’t help but laugh. “Would you like to come in?”
“Yes.”
He kisses you once more before opening his door for you. You can see this relationship lasting a long, long time.

i.
working is stressful enough. and driving 30 minutes just to get home can make you feel like killing yourself. those traffics. people breaking for no reason. people driving above speed limit as if they're in a drift competition. but oh well, except for today.
you decided to take a longer route home today even if that means you will be spending extra 10 minutes on the road to reach home. but with your current life, you know needed those 10 minutes because it's literally the only time that you have for yourself. accompanied by nothing but the hum of your tyres and the sound of the car engine. that little white noise somehow makes you calm than the sound of the ocean meeting the shore.
there were a lot of things you are thinking right now but for once, it's not about money. you have some savings enough for the next four months (you've been saving up since your first year at an engineering company in the city centre). so even though you're now only working as a barista, you don't worry about money much. and with your father's condition, the financial assisstant given by the government are quite enough for his medication and to pay for his caretaker.
in the car, your mind takes you back when you were little. how you were always in your father's shadow. despite being a girl, you would always be seen with bolts and nuts, spanners, hammers, car spare parts in your hands. oil and grease on your face. instead of playing with dolls, you'd play with karts, toy cars, nerf guns, video games. the amount of time you spent with your father's colleagues in the hotels. you would follow everywhere your father goes. you would often be seen at the ferrari's garage, surrounded with ferrari engineers and mechanics, asking them this and that. watching them like you're the boss.
but the clouds aren't always clear. things would always crumbling down while you're at the highest of high. it's like the god is calling you and to humble you down. after getting a phone call from your neighbour who told you that your father was always found at the police station, they suggested you to get your father diagnosed. he has alzheimer's disease for a year now and it's not getting any better. if anything, it gets worse and fast deteroriate.
because yesterday specifically, he didn't remember who you are. he didn't remember your name. he wasn't sure why you were in his house. he even called his mom (who died many years ago) and kicked you out of the house. you know your neighbours saw what happened. you just hope they didn't get the wrong idea about your family because you know your father will not kick you out of his house if he didn't lost his mind. good thing annie the caretaker lives with you. she sedated your father. when everything's calmed, you locked yourself in your room and cried.
yesterday was not the first night you cried since your father was diagnosed. but it was the most painful yet. to witness your father calling his mother who was dead for years. to see an unknowing look when he sees your face. your name didn't give him a clue of who you are. he said something about calling andrea. and you know who andrea and that's where you know you're fucked. because both you and you father hate your mum.
all of the times you spent together with him got deleted from his memory just like that. you remember when you were younger. you used to get mad at your father for not giving you enough attention but if you knew your father was going to get alzheimer's and that he won't remember you ever, you wouldn't beg your father for attention.
so what now? you can't just make a conversation with him now. you can't get straight to your point because every time you will try tell him something exciting, you will have to tell him from the start. from before the news. the concert your favourite is going to make. your plan on seeing them. when the ticket purchasing is open and you got yourself the very expensive one (the package includes meet and greet with the band backstage before concert, a handful of merchandise that include lanyard, rainbow light stick, bracelet, photo album from the first few concerts, free drinks.) the songs list. though at one point, you stop talking.
"nevermind. you won't remember it at all," you'd tell your father.
"i'm sorry."
"it's okay."
no. it's never okay. because he used to remember things that you like, love and hate the most. he remembered things that made you cry and laugh. he knew the bad jokes just to put a smile on your face. both of you used to say bad things about your mum and laughed about it. now he talks about her.
and he definitely hates you now. you know it's his routine to go out at 11 in the morning to meet his friends somewhere in the neighbourhood. he would usually be back home by lunch time. he would walk home since most of his friends are also too old to drive. but after a few times being found by the police and your neighbour had to fetch him at the police station, he's banned to leave the house without a partner even if he's not meeting his friends. annie will usually tidy and clean the house in the morning and you work in the morning until five. like a teenager, he's in a rebellion phase where he doesn't want to talk to you though he's still being friendly with annie.
you're lost. you don't know what to do. you tried asking the doctors some advice. you tried asking a community for a solution. you tried inviting his friends over to your house instead but at the end of the day, your father still wants to go out during the time that neither you nor annie were available. it hurts you everywhere realising that you lost your lovely father.
you feel your eyes sting. they water a little bit before you blink them away. but it's not like you to cry on a daylight. so you sit in your car as you drive within speed limit, head hurts from holding back your tears. the traffic is as normally heavy today but you're not stuck. you enjoy every second of the drive until a big dog crosses the road. you to slam your break. your tyres screech.
luckily you were already inside a rich neighbourhood. the familiar, quiet and deserted neighbourhood where there are less cars, more trees, big and well-maintained park. you rarely come here unless you're visiting one of two of your rich friends. shocked, the dog doesn't move. he stays in front of your car in the middle of the road, crying for his mistake. you pull your handbreak and press the hazard light button before you leave your car to check up on the dog.
"hey, buddy."
the dog whines. he watches as you approach him, gives you his best puppy dog eyes so that you would not be angry at him and help him instead. he belongs to someone because there's a collar around his neck though without a name and a phone number. smoothing your fingers through the dog's fur, you help him calm down.
"oh, thank god, you're okay," you'd say. "are you supposed to be here, little buddy? where did you come from, huh? where's your human?"
the dog whimpers while you continue to caress his neck, his back, his head. you can feel him shaking uncontrollably under your palms. instantly, you feel bad for him even though it's not your fault to make him scared in the first place.
"augustine!" comes a male voice from over the dog's shoulder. "augustine. oh thank god! there you are! you got me worried sick about you!"
every problem you had about your life was gone when you see the dog and when you had to hit the break paddle but now as the familiar blonde-haired man with blue eyes is in front of you, you feel your heart explodes. something caught in your throat. your blood withdrawn from your face. you feel like your world is crashing down and rebuilding with a new kind of good problem. out of the many places and times, why must you see mick schumacher now?
mick was your childhood bestfriends. since he's inseparable with his sister gina and since your age is not so different with her, you're best friends with her too. and being bestfriends with the siblings is like being the third child to their parents corinna and michael. so they know you. you know them. your father is a friend of michael and he was one of the few people that was allowed to see michael when he got into that tragic accident. things changed when mick got so busy with his formula siries career and you're busy studying to be an engineer. it's been years since you last saw him. well, until today.
mick, who has yet to notice you there, lets out a long sigh. you watch him as he puts his attention on dog---augustine. he kneels in front of augustine, checking his body for cuts and bloods. when there's nothing serious, he sighs one more time. relieved, his shoulders relaxed.
"augustine... what did i tell you about running off the street?"
the dog shoves his muzzle into the male's underarm, hiding his face and continues to whimper. it's as if he is apologising to mick that he's being reckless and maybe promise not to do it again.
"you could've been killed, do you know that?"
mick looks up at you now after feeling like it's enough to scold augustine. plus, they're still in the middle of one side of the road. and his reaction mirrors you when you first found out that it's mick in front of you.
"catherine?"
"hi, mick."
you smile. you feel like being a high school girl again for having your crush looking right at you. he is exactly the kind of prince charming most girls used to dream of when they were children. only you have had met your prince charming ever since you were little.
mick's eyes studies your face that he hasn't seen in a few years. "h--- hi."
things get awkward. you didn't know what else to say. you keep smiling.
"i'm--- uhh--- i'm sorry about augustine," mick stutters a little. "we were just playing freebies. at the park. and then she thought we lost the freebies so she went hunting for it."
so agustine is a she.
"don't worry about it." you wave a hand. "what's important is that she's fine, isn't she."
"a bit traumatised, i bet. but other than that, she's fine, yeah." mick smiles at you even though his eyes are on augustine who is sitting like a good dog near his leg.
a short silence falls between you and mick again until mick feels augustine nudges his leg.
"i--- i should get going."
get going? five minutes ago you're sure you felt like running away when you saw mick. in face, you didn't want to meet anyone you knew who lives in this street because you hate telling stories about your father. the shock in their faces. the simpathy. they send condolences but they never meet their hearts. because none of them never experienced what you're experiencing now. but when mick stands up, pets his dog to follow, turns around towards the direction they came, you feel like stopping them. because when interacting with them you weren't thinking about your problems for once. it feels fresh.
but despite that, you didn't have the courage to call mick even though you were his childhood bestfriends. even though you grew up in the same village. even though both of you used to play with dirts together at the horse barn at your neighbour's. all of your learned how to ride a horse together with your neighbour's kids but only gina turned out to make it a career. how he would follow you and your father hunting in the woods. you were there when he decided to be serious with karting. you would reconsider to do it if you still had that dream job, one where you and mick weren't having that huge gap in terms of your career. but it's different now. mick is a succesful formula one driver and you're just a barista. it sounds crazy if he wants to go out with you.
but you haven't seen him for years! you could kill yourself if you didn't go out with mick for at least once in your youth. to see how he is like as a someone closer than just a friend. if it didn't work out, it's okay, you think. you can still be friends with him like he is friends with justine. so you open your mouth to call mick. you were glad nothing came out because before you could find your voice, mick stops on the road divider. augustine follows just as when he stops. he turns around and approaches you once again.
"sorry." he chuckles nervously. "i know this sounds a bit crazy but i'm free for the rest of the day today. and i was wondering if... if you'd like to have some coffee with me."
you heart blossoms. "i would if you don't mind me driving for you."
you definitely didn't plan to say that though. it's just that your car is kind of brand new so it's hard to put a trust on somebody else to drive your car even though he is an f1 driver.
mick chuckles. "i don't. new car?"
"kind of," you answer as mick inspects your car. the tyres. the sportrim. the skirting. the tinted windows. the custom colour of your car. "it's two years old though but it till feels like it's new."
mick is definitely in love with your car.
"look at how shiny your car is."
mick rounds your car, pushes augustine into the back of your car and apologises when augutine's legs cause a dirts on your seats. though you wish you brought old towel or newpapers, but you dismiss mick and drives him back to the park (though you have make to u-turn) for him to collect his belongings that he left when chasing after augustine. good thing nothing was stolen.
you ended up settling down at a coffee shop in the city centre with mick beside you and augustine comfortably lying on her stomach by mick's foot. you recognise this particular coffee shop because a year ago you were one of their regular customers to get coffee first thing in the morning before work. their coffee never felt expensive to you.
until now...
"the fact that we haven't seen each other for years, i feel like i should introduce myself," mick jokes.
"we just haven't seen each other, mick. we're not strangers."
mick laughs. "how have you been doing?"
to be honest, you don't know how to answer mick's question. well, how do you answer when a year and a half ago, you learned that your father has alzheimer's disease. and then you have to resign from your old company, say goodbye to your dreams, pack your bags and return home. you weren't ready for what comes next. nobody from your circle told you what to expect when your father has alzheimer's. so when he starts to forget about you, it hurts so bad.
"i'm... good."
"the delay doesn't sound good."
"i don't have anything else to say."
mick stares at you for a few seconds. it feels like he is reading your mind. it feels as if he already knew what happened to your father but didn't want to feel like he knows everything so he keeps quiet. you're damn sure he is waiting for you to tell him but the question is, are you ready? even if he already knew about your family?
didn't feel comfortable, you gulp and look away before returning your gaze to him.
"enough about me. how about you? how are you doing? how's your career?"
mick doesn't look pleased with the question. he presses his lips together. as trained, he answers "there are many ups and downs with the teams. didn't manage to finish last race but we're looking forward to the next race and definitely we will work harder."
"seriously? you're using that voice with me?"
"what voice?"
"your working voice," you state. "when you're answering interviews. you have this kind of voice. and that staged answers--- i know you memorise them. come on. tell me something i don't know."
mick wonders and he wonders a lot. and you definitely didn't know what you don't know and mick decides to wait and see if he's right.
"well, seb is visiting us next week."
"really?"
your face lights up hearing sebastian vettel's name as you're close to him too. his kids are a bundle joy. though you only meet them when he's visiting mick but they remember you and that's what matters. having a father who was once a part of the motorsport team gave you a lot of advantages and experiences a normal girl didn't have.
your father was michael's mechanic at ferrari. and michael was close to him at home but closer since they spent so much time together around the globe. and michael was close to sebastian so that makes your father closed with sebastian. and you too. at some point, all of you are connected.
you thought of bringing your father to see sebastian at mick's house but your face falls as soon as you remember that your father isn't going to remember who sebastian is despite being close. those times he and michael spent with sebastian in the red bull garage after both of them retired. those times they spent together watching junior drivers in their go-kart, standing outside of the go-kart circuit with hands behind their backs, judging other people's kids. your father isn't going to remember them all.
"hey, what's with the sour face?"
you give mick a small smile. "nothing. i probably should head home."
"but we just like here like... three minutes ago."
"i--- i just feel like to be alone. i'm sorry, mick."
"o--- okay."
mick gathers his belongings and you gather yours. he pulls augustine up by the leash and minutes later, all three of you are inside your car again and on your way home.
*
mick's house is exactly how you remember it used to be. the same colour. the same gravel road that leads to his house. the same frontyard with a little garden on the left though corinna have few different flowers and trees now. his mother or gina might have traded their old cars but other than those, nothing really changed. as you slowly pull your car in front of the house, you see gina at their front porch, reading while her dog roger is chasing the butterflies away.
"thank you for the coffee. i really appreciate it."
"ah, it's nothing," mick scratches the back of his head absent-mindedly. "i think we should do it again."
"you think?"
"no. we should do it again."
yes. you wanted to do this again even though at first, you didn't think there is "again" especially when you were being hard on mick. close to being rude to him when he was nothing but a sweetheart to you. he even paid for your coffee when normally you would your own meal when you go out with your friends. and even a few guys you dated back then.
you're not sure where this is going. you wished to go out with mick for at least once in your life. but god is giving you another chance with mick so you definitely isn't going to say no. right? wrong! just when you thought you finally found your happiness, a thought about your father crosses your mind. you've been neglecting him for hours now. a part from his rebellion about you not allowing him to go out without supervision, he could be sulking now at home because you've been neglecting him. another reason for him to hate you.
"i don't know, mick."
"you're worried about your father, aren't you?"
this is what mick has been waiting for you tell him about. he's been itching to hear them from your own mouth. he didn't dare to ask you himself in the first place because he knows what it feels like to talk about something you hadn't truly accept. but the reason mick is asking now is because he wants to see you more and he cannot bear the fact that you keep saying no becaue of your father as if he didn't understand your situation.
he understands alright!
your eyes instantly water. "how---how do you know?"
it hurts to see you cry because the catherine he remembers was always laughing. if you're not doing that, you'd be smiling. even if not that, you'd be mischievously smirking at him with gina. both of you were quite pranksters back then. even if you weren't doing any of the above, you were not crying.
"mum told me." mick pauses. "i didn't believe her but last week i found your father at my old karting club with annie. i tried to talk to him but he didn't remember me. and that's when i know."
you wipe your tears on your cheeks.
"is that why you've been distancing yourself from me?"
"no."
mick raises his eyebrows. "are you sure?"
"maybe."
"why else?"
"well, isn't it obvious? that you're always busy and constantly traveling. meanwhile i'm here struggling with double hours and taking care of my father that i barely had time for anything."
"aren't you an engineer?"
"were," you say. "i have to leave them behind, mick. right when my father was officially diagnosed with alzheimer's. i came back home. and i'm now a barista."
you lift up a logo on the left side of your uniform.
"i'm sorry you have to through this, catherine."
"i'm... getting used to it."
"you know what, why don't you come with him when seb comes next week?"
"thanks but he won't remember anything, mick. he doesn't even remember me."
"shit."
mick looks down. mourning. mourning for you and all of your memories you had with your dad.
"but this isn't going to be the last time we ever see each other again, okay? i'll see you tomorrow at your house. i want to see your father. i don't care if he doesn't remember me. i still want to see him."
"no. you don't have to---"
"maybe i'll bring gina along. we'll see." mick smiles. "bye."
you watch as mick opens the back car door and whistles to augustine. as soon as mick and augustine step foot onto their frontyard, roger barks happily at them as if announcing to the people who live there that mick and augustine are back from the park. gina puts down her book and looks up. she smiles brightly as soon as she recognises it's you in the car and waves at you. you wave back, returning home.
when the next day comes, mick didn't tell notify you that he's on his way to your house. good thing you are on your off-day and you just finished having your late breakfast when your door bell rings. your father doesn't move from his seat. he didn't ask you to get the door. it's as if he didn't hear the bell. or maybe he is sulking about yesterday. meanwhile you and annie exchange looks.
"did we expect any visitors today?"
"uh. i think that's mick."
"mick? as in the schumacher?"
you nod your head.
"you didn't tell me he's coming? i didn't prepare anything."
"and i haven't taken my shower," you say. "that's alright. i'll get the door. he's here to see dad."
when you finally open the door, you realise that mick isn't alone. a beaming gina is one step behind mick's shoulder. while mick is wearing a jumper and jeans, gina is wearing a button-up shirt tucked into her trousers and her trousers are tucked into her horse-riding boots. she must be from the barn. as usual.
"were you at the schmidt's the whole morning?"
schmidt is your neighbour. the who one has the horse barn where all three of you---including schmidt's children---used to play together when you were kids. the way all of you used to play like there's no tomorrow. not worrying about pimples and acnes and allergies. while the fathers would be watching over you, drinking coffees (because it's not a good moral to drink alcohol with kids around) and talking. sometimes they'd be working on an old tractor that they know was not going to work but still tried to make it work.
gina chuckles. "do you mind if i use your bathroom. i just finished---"
"yeah, yeah. go ahead. you know where the bathroom is. my turn next."
gina leaves her boots outside, enters your house without any more words, leaving mick in confusion as he watches his older sister making your house like her second house. just like how you did to theirs.
"is she always like that?"
you smile guiltily.
"how come you're still close with her and not with me?"
"i don't know, mick. i guess it's easier when you're always home."
mick doesn't like that sound. he's home as much as he can when there's no race. his manager tries to accept less interviews, appointments, photoshoots to free his schedule and let him home because he understands mick's family situation. and when he's home, he is home. and yet, he never stumbled into you before.
mick enters your house and the sense of familiarity hits him. every precious moment he created with you and the house when he was a little boy hits his memory core. the kitchen where you'd all eat cereal despite it being pass breakfast time. the silly arts on the wall are still there. and then there's the living room where all of you used to watch cartoons. your father travels alot when he was a ferrari mechanic but somehow always manage to reserve this old house foor the sake of the memories. miracle.
then mick sees your father sitting on the single chair, staring into nothing. mick glances at you.
"ever since he... you know... he doesn't like noise. he hates the tv because he says he cannot understand whatever the hell they're saying. though i think he is particularly quiet today is because i was not home early."
"mum says you'd walk with him on your off-day."
"that's true. but in the evening. i--- uh--- i usually woke up late on my off-day."
as if somethng clicks in his mind, mick's eyes catch an abandoned set of bowl and mug on your kitchen island. "you just finished your breakfast, aren't you?"
you sheepishly smile at him. you know mick and his family are early risers. maybe it's in their genes but it's also might be because they're athletes and with their training schedules, diet, mental health they're trained to sleep early to wake up early the next morning.
because it doesn't feel foreign inside your house so without being offered, mick takes a seat in front of your father, you in front of him so you can see the day his blue eyes dilate with hope as he opens his mouth to greet your father.
"good morning, herr erberhardt."
when your father looks at mick, there is the smiliar confusion he has with you. the first time felt like thousands of knives impaling you and though it still hurts to see the same unknown look on his face when he looked at you this morning but since you have accepted it, you stopped feeling sorry for yourself. and it amazes you with how fast you could accept.
"who are you?"
"i'm mick. you know my father michael."
"michael?"
"schumacher?" mick's face falls but he doesn't look hurt that your father didn't recognise him and his father. "you were his best friend and mechanic."
"oh."
mick quickly pulls out his mobile phone. you watch as mick presses some icons for a while until you finally understand what he's doing. he opens his camera roll, picks one picture and shows it to your father. you lean closer to look at the picture. and though mick didn't slightly turn his phone for you, you can see the picture clearly. your father and mick's. both of them are wearing the familiar red t-shirt.
your father definitely have tons of pictures of him at work but not this one. based on the quality, you would know that it's from one of the least photographers who was allowed to enter the paddock back then.
"see. this is him. the one on the right. and this is you. it was both of your last day with ferrari."
you weren't there on your father's last day with ferrari but you remember him coming home with lots of gifts from brasil. and you still have them in a big box in the garage where you keep good ol' stuffs there.
mick continues to tell stories to your father. and it was at this exact moment that you know why you weren't allowed to follow him to brasil because he knew there were having a farewell party and he's going to get drunk and not able to take care of you. maybe it's better to find this out as an adult because otherwise, you wouldn't want to speak to your father again if you found this out when you were little.
it looks like mick doesn't care at all that your father doesn't remember anything that he's telling as your father listens to them without showing any interest at all. mick keeps his composure well and you wonder how he does it until you remember that his father is sick ever since he was 14. when you were 14, you still had your father to help you with a guitar.
gina comes into the living room, smelling like your shower gel and hair shampoo, when mick is telling a story about him and sebastian. and you excuse yourself because it's your turn to take a shower. and you could've missed mick glancing at you if you hadn't turn towards them at the living room.
*
when it's time for lunch, gina was first to be seated at the dining table, too hungry from her session at schmidt's barn. everyone eats only when everyone is seated at the dining table---including annie---and gina is treating herself as if she's at her family's house. not like you mind though because her presence brings a little joy in the house.
mick on the other hand is embarrassed with his sister's behaviour even though he too is used to having lunches and dinners at your house. but that was several years ago. to be able to do this again feels like he's starting over with you and your family. but maybe with gina there he can get used to this sooner.
everyone is doing their own part at the dining table. one asks questions. one answers the questions. one more person makes fun of the person who asked the question because she likes to make fun of her little brother. the late-30 woman is keeping an eye on an old man who is feeding himself slowly. for a moment, everything looks so perfect at the dining table until the old man stops eating, leaves the dining table and starts hunting for something.
four of you stop eating immediately. everyone wears a worried look on their faces as you watch your father looking around the house for something. he stops in front of the tv where the coffee table sits. he upturns the rattan bowl, rummaging through its content scattering on the table. then he takes out everything inside the sofa remote holder. when he didn't find what he's looking for, he moves towards the tv cabinet.
he opens the tv cabinet, takes out every cd, dvd, book, extension wire, more remote controls and dust. you hear him mumbling something but he still hasn't found it.
"dad, what are you looking for?"
you dad doesn't answer you.
"dad, do you need help?"
"ma! where's my... where's my..."
mick knows you have no one except your father, though when you were little, diana (your nanny) was in the picture and annie came only when your father was diagnosed with alzheimer's. your father's mother died before you even existed. maybe mick's father knew her but not the next generation. now it makes you wonder how far back his memory is deleted from his brain.
but it seems that even by calling for help from his mother, he doesn't know what he's looking for. you get up from your dining table and approaches your dad. you try to tell that it's okay to forget what he's looking for now and that he can try and find it later when he remembers. the house is already a mess like there was a thief here but your father is not giving up.
"dad, why don't you sit down for a minute. i'm sure it'll come back to you if you calm down."
"no. i can't," he says. "it's important."
"why don't you tell me what you're looking for and i'll help find it?"
"i--- i don't remember what i'm looking for but i will know when i find it."
frustrated, your dad starts hitting himself. this is not the first time, though. it has happened a few times before. though it's only been a year since your father was diagnosed but this disease is eating him way faster than the doctors claimed.
while you try to stop him form beating himself (you getting beaten in the process), annie jumps out of her seat to get the seductive in her room while gina plays a soft, melancholy music in the background. once again, mick is left in horror as he watches everything unfolding itself in front of his eyes. what's more surprising is how his sister looks like she knows what she's doing.
mick certainly doesn't know what to do in the situation and how to offer any help. it's hurting him to watch your father hitting himself just because he cannot remember what he's looking for. and seeing you gets beaten... by the time your father calms down, he watches you slumping onto the ground with a loud thud. he sees your eyes wet. you look tired despite the fact that you just had your lunch.
gina helps annie carrying your father to his room while mick approaches you.
"hey. are you okay?"
you feel mick's hand squeezes your hand gently. you hear his voice breaking though you did not understand why. you nod your head to answer mick's question.
"annie and gina already brought him to bed. do you want to take a walk?"
"okay," you answer without actually understanding what mick was asking you.
mick stands up and pulls you up with him. mick helps you put on your jacket and shoes after doing the same for himself. you're still too tired from tending your father to speak and to think so while your mind is empty, you let mick leads you out. you follow wherever mick is taking you, talking hand-in-hand in silent, looking at the greens and blues and yellows. some cars pass by but you don't care.
"i'm sorry you have to see that," you finally speak after 30 minutes of walk.
"your father doesn't bother me," mick says.
you made a sound that you didn't know it was coming from your throat.
"gina did."
"why?"
"i don't know. maybe the fact that gina knows about your father. not me. and the fact that she knows what to do when herr erberhardt starts misbehaving tells me that she knows for awhile now."
"i'm sorry, mick. i just didn't want you to worry about me."
"so you told gina not to tell me?"
you sigh. hate to hear the irritation in mick's voice because you know you're wrong. he is your best friend. if augustine hadn't cross the road yesterday and you hadn't almost hit her, you probably is still not ready to tell mick about your father because you're just insecure with yourself now. you lost your dream job while mick is striving. people can't tell you that you're wrong to feel insecure about that.
mick knows not to want to argue with you especially when you're tired, so he drops the topic. that's okay, he thinks. he can ask you next time he sees you. it not tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, he has next week. because he will be seeing you again next week when sebastian comes to visit him and his family even if you didn't bring your father (he hopes you will) because you're close with sebastian like how he is closed with sebastian. but either way, mick knows that he will want to keep seeing you for as long as he can work this out.
when both of you get back to your house, gina is sitting at the front porch to wait for mick to get back home together. annie is nowhere to be seen but you bet she's inside, cleaning up the house after the hazard.
"don't forget next week, okay? i'll ask mum to cook your favourite cheesecake," mick says while hugging you.
"and tell us if you need anything. you know we're always ready help you whenever you need us."
you nod your head and smile at gina. "thanks."
when the siblings are out of your vision, you turn around where your house is. the house that holds thousands of memories and one who doesn't remember them at all.

The Heathers + Veronica go to the Arcade
They're gaymers, get it, gay-mers
Being a small town, there isn't really that much to do in Sherwood
Besides the mall and the movie theater, the main place that people go for recreational activities is the local arcade
Yes, there somehow is still a honest-to-god arcade operating in the year 20XX
And being the incredibly irresponsible and immature people that they are, the Heathers and Veronica spend a lot of time there
It's not the biggest or best arcade out there, but it's what they have
When they arrive they head straight for the prize counter
It's the same junk you would expect at any arcade, you got your plushes, candy, Nerf guns, animal toys, etc.
They each figure out what they are aiming for and head to the token machine
Chandler used to say that they shouldn't spend that much and that they can just buy what they want on Amazon right before her gfs got 500 bucks worth of tokens each
Now she just internally sighs before also getting an absurd amount of tokens
They get so many that they bring one of those giant plastic tubs to carry all of them
They get so many, in fact, that the arcade simply does not have enough tokens to give all of them at once, and once they are done with the first batch the employees have to go and get the tokens from the machines to give back to them
They'll give out some of their tokens to the kids who are there, they really don't need all of them
Same thing with prizes, if they see that some kid is upset because they didn't get enough tickets to get what they wanted, they'll get it for them
They each have a particular style of game they gravitate towards
Veronica goes to the coin pushers
The arcade has a Spongebob, Willy Wonka and Marvel machine
She tends to go to the Willy Wonka one because even though each card individually is worth less, the complete set is worth more compared to the other two
She'll just stand in place for hours, hitting the button over and over again
She enters an almost catatonic state, hypnotized by the coins
One time Chandler came by just to check in on her and see how she was feeling, and when she tapped her on the shoulder she jumped and almost punched her
She plays it over and over and doesn't stop to play something else bc then someone might jump on and win all the cards she pushed forward
Onetime she won all of the cards out of it and when she tried to ask the employee to put more in they told her that she won all of them and that they didn't have any more to put in the machine
Then she moved on to the other two and cleaned them out as well
Duke plays games of chance
Stuff like Big Bass or that Pirate Spin Wheel one, she lives for the thrill of landing on that Big Bass Bonus
She plays them so much that she knows when the machines are about to pay out and so she'll wait, watching all of them, until she sees the signs of a pay out and rush over and get it
While she waits she'll go over to the classic cabinents, stuff like Pac-man or Galaga
Her and Chandler have a 'friendly' competition going and by friendly I mean downright vicious
If she sees that Chandler has beaten one of her high scores she will abandon all ticket-making endeavors to secure her rightful place as Queen of the Arcade
Her name on the machines is HDK and Chandler's is HCN
Speaking of Chandler, she focuses on games of skill
Stuff like Quik Drop, where you have to get all of the balls into moving cups, things where skill plays a major part in how many tickets you get
With these she can rack up a lot of tickets very quickly, her output far surpassing that of her gfs
Bc of that she feels like she can spend her time on games that don't give out tickets, like the classic arcade games
Mac isn't as ticket hungry as the others, she knows that they'll have more than enough for whatever they want to buy, so she does a little bit of everything
She is godly at Skee Ball, always landing in the 100 loop
She spends a lot of time at the claw machines, but she isn't very good at them so she usually ends up getting frustrated and walking away, before getting Chandler to come over and win whatever she was trying to get
DDR is probably her favorite, and she always drags her gfs to play with her
None of them can stand up to her might, and they usually step down breathing heavy and covered in sweat
She also holds the highest score on Pac-man, a record which Chandler and Duke have tried to beat for years but never have been able to
They usually stop around lunch time and order some food
They get two large pizzas, one for Veronica, the other for Mac and Duke to split
Chandler gets a salad bc she thinks their pizza is too greasy
Once they've spent all their tokens they put all of their tickets into the ticket eater, a process which takes close to 45 minutes to complete, and they go help the poor employee at the counter count out all of Veronica's coin pusher sets
They get an average of 200,000 tickets
They split the amount up 4 ways and each get what they want
Duke usually goes for the big expensive prizes, for example one time she was able to get a PS5
If there aren't any bigger prizes, she'll get all the nerf guns and insist upon having a nerf war when they get home
Chandler shudders at the thought of picking up nerf darts in random areas for months
One time she decided to just see how many of the 10 ticket mini army men she could get, just for fun
She ended up leaving with 5,000 of them, and they now sit in a box somewhere in her closet, just waiting for the day Duke comes up with some scheme
Mac likes going for the big stuffed animals
She has a whole collection, her room is just covered in them
Chandler tells her that she has enough and Mac says 'preposterous, you can never have too many'
She also gets the tiny animal toys
Veronica, like Duke, goes for the bigger prizes, but if they have any pokemon cards she'll get those, open them, and regret getting them because she pulled nothing
Chandler usually gives her tickets to her gfs because theres nothing she's interested in, but she occasionally gets something
One time she found this Mickey Mouse toaster that burned his face into the bread, which she thought was just fucking hilarious for some reason
She got it, expecting it to last a few weeks at most
It ended up lasting them 3 years, and they all got kinda upset when it finally stopped working
Before they leave they head into the photo booth
Chandler insists on having one normal picture and they can have two silly ones, but her gfs don't listen and always do something silly
She keeps each and every one of the photo slips
She pins them to a board in her room, and whenever she gets stressed out or angry or upset with her gfs, she goes to the board and looks at the photos and just thinks about how much she loves them, even if they can be infuriating and immature at times

You picked up a habit of doing crosswords in newspapers
Eddie's always there to help you with more difficult words but he has a secret: he checked the answers to the ones even he didn't know
Watching Jeopardy or Who wants to be a millionaire gets competitive but still fun
The mutual "WHY WOULD YOU KNOW THAT??"
If you take any medication, you can be sure Eddie is going to remind you to take it
Tic-tac-toe with fridge magnets on days when you two are busy and rarely get to see each other even while living together
If you're gone for the night, visiting someone maybe, he cuddles your shirt while sleeping (it smells of you, so...)
Don't ask him an opinion about your outfit because it's always going to be the very same "You're perfect"
If you like scented candles, you might have just ruined a certain smell for Eddie. Oh, you buy vanilla-scented candles? Congrats, whenever and wherever Eddie smells vanilla, he thinks of you
Nothing you ever do, think, say or feel is in any way weird to him
Watching cartoons together (Scooby-Doo slaps at any age)
Polaroids of you two just hanging about and being two idiots in love
You bought him a mug with a question mark on it and now he won't drink out of anything else
If you have long hair, Eddie definitely would learn how to do braids
He makes random remarks about you to his followers
Maybe he remembered something thoughtful you said or something you like that was relevant to the topic he was rambling about
Matching necklaces!!!! Nothing over the top, thin chainlink and a small yet meaningful pendant
Because he (most probably) doesn't have a dish that he associates with childhood, you regularly make him something that someone used to make for you
Whatever you're currently obsessed with, Eddie listens with genuine interest
He probably keeps pictures of you in multiple places: his wallet, on his phone (obviously), inside the bedside table, on a corkboard among his planning and research
If you're away from each other, you get on a video call and just sit kind of together. Not necessarily talking to each other, just doing your own things but being in the other's presence as much as possible at the time
If you're upset with him about something, he's either going to deny his agency ("I had no choice/It wasn't my fault") or is seconds away from getting on his knees and begging for forgiveness
You're probably a lot of his firsts
Before moving in together, he keeps your favourite drink and/or snacks at his place, just in case you come by
Whenever he speaks negatively about himself, you shoot him with a nerf gun
Avantgarde cognitive-behavioural therapy
He tries his best to cook for you
Lowkey considers breaking up with you when the whole lark with Batman starts
Just to ensure that you're as far away from that ordeal as possible
But you told him that you're in this together and he can't do anything to make you change your mind
You nag at him to take a break once in a while, go for a walk, clear his head
If English isn't your first language, you can be sure Eddie will study your mother tongue
He'd definitely be into being called pet names in your first language
There's always some homemade dessert in your fridge
Your compliments always make him giddy
Despite you openly supporting his Riddler persona and everything that comes with it (maybe not the murder part), Eddie doesn't want you to actually know what his planning
For your own safety
He's the type of person who'd pick up a phone call at 3 AM and be at your front door in record time
If you're insecure about something, he's just straight-up confused because how?? why??
Always gives you a bite/sip of his food
Learns weird skills just in case you need help with something one day
The first time he's hanging out with you and your friends he's genuinely surprised that they're nice to him and are friendly and curious about their friend's boyfriend
Because he's never had lovely friends like that?? He thought people are in general shit??
But it makes so much sense that you have open-minded, easy-going, welcoming friends
Super awkward about periods but willing to buy pads/tampons, snacks and painkillers
You need his help so of course he's going to deliver
Carries your bag for you
You often catch him just staring at you with that deep-in-thought look
He's admiring, okay
At some point, the ex-lovers talk has to happen
Eddie gets visibly uncomfortable thinking about you possibly being more experienced than him and comparing him to other people you've been with
You have to remind him several times that it doesn't matter as much as he thinks. Now you're with him, it's him you want to be affectionate with. Besides, no one's born with knowledge in the dating/relationship/PDA department. You have to be inexperienced and awkward before you know what you're doing
The most important thing, you tell Eddie, is the willingness to communicate and learn. And the enthusiasm!
Oh, that he definitely has when it comes to you
Whenever you feature him on your social media, there's a cringy amount of heart emojis but who cares
He's got a bit of chub, so you love to lay on top of him
Tabletop game nights. Not Monopoly tho
Playing Mario Kart on stormy weekends
He hates losing and is really fast at coming up with successful tactics
Back hugs when you're doing something around the kitchen
You, on the other hand, give him back hugs to calm him down when something's not going the way he wanted to
You pack his lunch and no matter how many times he tells you that you don't have to, you're reminding him that you want to
Sharing desserts
Making him healthy food and he discovers a whole new palate
He can be a little pushy when you're clearly upset about something, wanting you to finally tell him what's up
Eddie's messy let's be honest
You nag at him about keeping the place a little clean and he's trying his best
He never cared for plants, cushions or fairy lights but since you moved it, he realized that they make the flat a lot more homely
Now your existence is just written all over the furniture and you're there even if you're physically gone
You visit him regularly at Arkham and he's on the verge of crying when the visiting hours are over and you have to go

Spooky Month OCs pt. 1: Ben and Noah
I have a lot of characters but more specifically I have 4 of these guys!! they're in duo's tho so two posts it is. heres the first two, descriptions and artfight links under the cut! (my af is Kats_Creations!)
Ben:
He/Him ll 15 ll Gay
Obsessed with "Nef" guns (in universe nerf guns), and always carries at least the pistol. Chaotic and brash, but nice enough. Shotgun Man's nephew; he looks up to him a lot. Best friends with Noah. Definitely just besties what are you talking about haha (theyre gay for eachother). Goes to the same school as the hatzgang, Susie, and Asher (another OC, see pt 2 post or af page below).
Noah:
He/Him ll 16 ll Bi Athleic kid, more specifically basketball. Still super dorky tho, could probably ramble for several hours about his favorite webcomics. Chill and kind, but has a pretty big competitive streak and can be pretty snarky when he wants to. Best friends with Ben. Crush? What crush haha he doesn't have a crush (thats a lie he has a big fat crush on ben and they get together eventually)! He at least knows of the Hatzgang and Susie (as well as Asher) considering they're at the same high school. He knows and is friendly with Robert, who sometimes helps him record trick shots with Ben.

April 2010: "Capture the Flag"
One of the final assignments for the creative writing class I was in at this time was to revise one of the pieces we'd done earlier in the semester, so this is the revised version of this short story.
Capture the Flag
Jason inspected his troops from dirt-smudged face to bandaged knee. “Listen up!” he said. “The red team ain’t gonna lose to no stinkin’ blue team, y’hear? Not this time! This time we’re gonna get my brother’s flag and bring it back here, and we’re gonna kick his butt! Marlene, you’re gonna have to set up some traps. Make it hard for them to get our flag.”
Marlene, wearing pigtails and overalls, had cluttered her pockets with various tools and miscellaneous useful-seeming objects, such as several lengths of rope, that she had scavenged from her family’s garage. She nodded and burst into giggles, her eyes already seeking out ideal locations for traps.
“Chris,” Jason continued, “I want you to find a good spot to hide in. Y’gotta slingshot anyone who gets too close to our base.”
“You got it, boss,” Chris said, grinning mischievously. He had recently fashioned a slingshot out of a particularly ideal Y-shaped stick and the elastic off an old pair of underwear. Armed with small rocks, plastic bottle caps, and some especially stale marshmallow Peeps, he was prepared to bruise his enemy, preferably from the safety of a tree.
Jason nodded. “Alex, you’re with me. We’re gonna go get the flag, and I want you to take down anyone who gets in our way.”
Alex, armed with a brand new, rapid-fire Nerf gun and a hefty, fully loaded Super Soaker, let out a hearty laugh, taking the Nerf gun in his pudgy hands and shaking it above his head.
Jason pushed his baseball cap farther back on his head. “Alright boys – and girl – we’re gonna capture us a flag!” He whooped, leaping and waving his hat over his head. The others followed suit, letting their excitement fly off their tongues. A mocking response to their hollering cut over the roof of Jason’s house, and the group fell silent. Jason curled his lip, sneering at the sound of his rivals’ enthusiasm.
“We’re gonna beat them,” Jason muttered. “Once and for all!”
The group nodded excitedly, shouting various affirmatives and sharing cocky smiles.
Jason grinned. “Alright, let’s do this thing!”
The red team dispersed. Marlene shot off to turn the backyard into an obstacle course as Chris climbed into a tree that would allow him a full view of the backyard and the underside of the porch where they had stashed their flag. Jason and Alex ran around to the house’s side yard where Chad, Jason’s older brother, waited.
Jason approached his blue counterpart with a swagger. He eyeballed the preteen and barked a laugh. So what if his brother and his team were older? Jason’s team was better. They had made a careful plan of attack, working on it for days ahead of time, trying to find the best way to beat Chad and his friends. This would be the day that Jason finally won in a battle against Chad. He had failed in almost every other competition, whether it was putting the dishes away faster or winning a game of Monopoly. He and his friends lost to Chad and his friends at kickball and manhunt, soccer and football, and nearly every other game the two groups had played against each other. Pride would not allow them to lose to Chad at capture the flag. Today they would win, and Jason would show himself as worthy of his brother’s respect.
Alex lowered his Nerf gun. “You ready to lose, Chad?”
Chad shook his head, laughing. “Not a chance in hell. Don’t cry when you lose again, ladies.” He darted between Jason and Alex, rushing toward their flag.
Startled, Alex pulled out the Nerf gun and fired the foam darts at Chad’s back. Jason shook off his surprise and sped around to the enemy side of the house, plunging into the unknown, thinking only that he must capture and secure the blue flag before his brother could obtain the red flag. In his distraction, he immediately tripped over a strategically placed skateboard. Stunned, he flew up into the air and landed on his back, becoming temporarily winded. A girl with a pixie cut and a blue sweatshirt sauntered over.
“Real smooth,” Ellen said, pointing a water gun in Jason’s face.
Jason squeezed his eyes shut against the water, only to reopen them as he heard the girl yelp. Alex had whipped back around after Jason’s fall and now fired the Nerf gun at Ellen. “Run, Jason!”
Jason scrambled to his feet and began to sprint, heading for the driveway where he hid himself behind one of his parents’ cars, frantically scanning for the blue team’s remaining member while trying to locate the blue flag.
There were numerous possibilities. His house and the surrounding area were rife with hiding places. The back and left side of the house, from which he had just come, were bordered by woods while a large lichen- and moss-covered rocky mass rose on its right side. The front of the house saw a view of the street, but a large portion of yard stood between the front door and sidewalk. This segment was primarily bare with only the half-circle driveway and a large pine tree in its grassy middle to decorate it. Even so, the borders of the yard were not off-limits and there were plenty of hiding places for the blue flag if Chad had been clever about it.
Looking over the decidedly flagless front yard, Jason was not so sure that his plan was half as solid as he had believed.
As Jason contemplated his next move, Marlene finished her traps. She had littered the grass with marbles and strung rope between trees and the posts supporting the porch. Now, she tied the flag down where it stood, inventing knots as she bound it to nearby protruding objects. When she and Jason had concocted this plan, he’d said that if Chad’s team got by her traps, they’d at least be stuck trying to pull the flag from its place while Chris pelted them with pebbles.
Presently, Chad came around the corner. He ran toward the porch, leaping over Marlene’s ropes only to stumble on the marbles and fall to the ground face-first. Marlene jumped into the air, pleased with her success. “Yes!”
Her glee was short-lived, however, as Chad elected to obtain greater stability by forsaking bipedal movement in favor of crawling on all fours. In this fashion, he crossed the field of marbles and made it to the flag. Marlene briefly attempted to fend him off, only to have Chad shove her to the side with a derisive grunt. The fact that the flag had been tied to the porch’s supports in a nonsensical web of rope seemed to startle him. This pause gave Chris enough time to shoot a pebble into his arm
Chris cackled to himself. “Yeah, that’s it. Just stay right where I can see you.” He fired another pebble at Chad who glared in his direction then reached for Marlene, wrapping one arm around her and attempting to use her struggling body as a shield while he grappled with the knots binding the red flag in place. Chris hesitated, then pulled out the kinder of his three ammunitions, the stale marshmallow Peeps, and began to fire them at Chad, wincing whenever he hit Marlene.
Jason had left his hiding place behind his parents’ cars and headed for the rocks bordering the yard. They were fairly easy to climb, and, he reasoned, a pretty good place to hide a flag. He glanced toward Alex’s continuing struggle with Ellen; the two were locked in hand-to-hand combat, each trying to wrestle the other’s weapon away. Ellen appeared to be winning. With a frown, Jason picked up his pace.
The climb up the rocks was surprisingly trap-free, and their absence caused him to second guess his belief that the flag was hidden there. A thorough search of the brush atop the rock revealed no flag, though it did turn up another of Chad’s friends, a boy named Matt. He was armed with a suction cup bow and arrow set, probably stolen from Jason’s room, and clearly had intended to protect the true location of the flag from afar. Jason yelped when he stumbled across him by tripping over his legs, and the other boy gasped, swinging around and blindly firing his one arrow at Jason. The suction cup failed to stick to Jason’s T-shirt, and, weaponless, the would-be sniper stared blankly at Jason who, after a moment, jumped atop him, shouting, “Where’s the flag?”
“Get off me, you little twerp!”
“Tell me where it is!”
The older boy threw Jason to a mossy patch some feet away before bolting down the rock’s face. Jason got to his feet, not bothering to brush himself off, and followed Matt, only to meet with Ellen’s determined frown. She had, apparently, defeated Alex.
“Gotcha now,” she said, leering. She squirted water in his eyes, distracting him sufficiently to get him in a headlock. Rubbing her knuckles in his hair, she laughed, saying, “How do you like that, huh?”
Jason attempted throw her off of him, pushing against her arms with all that was in him only to find, much to his embarrassment, that he was weaker than a girl. In spite of his shame, he called for help.
Alex, winded from his struggle with Ellen, began to head toward Jason, only to be stopped by Matt who simply tackled him to the ground and sat on him.
Jason’s call did not go completely unanswered, however. The sound carried over the house to the backyard for his two remaining teammates to hear. It provided enough distraction for Marlene to blunder out of Chad’s grasp and dash away from him. She ran to Jason’s aid, calling his name.
Chad snarled. Refusing to lose to mere kids, he pulled at Marlene’s knots as Chris rained bottle caps on his shoulders.
Ellen’s back was to Marlene as she came around to the front yard. She had the element of surprise. Matt saw her coming and attempted to yell a warning to Ellen, but his call was cut short by a sudden thrashing from Alex, whose attempts to escape Matt and help Jason hadn’t ceased.
With a running start and a bit of inspiration from kung-fu movies, Marlene leapt and kicked Ellen in the rear clumsily. Ellen’s grip on Jason loosened, and he, breaking from her arms, ran toward the pine tree, guessing that to be the flag’s true location. Ellen started after him, but Marlene threw herself at the backs of the girl’s knees and brought her down to the ground, forcing her to deal with the tiny pig-tailed tomboy who, while not strong, was certainly persistent.
With Marlene and Alex buying him time, Jason sped to the tree and began to scale its heights, climbing from one branch to the next as quickly as he could. The tree was littered with traps; the net from an old home soccer goal had been drawn across some of the branches, preventing an easy climb up to the top of the tree where, Jason could now see, the flag resided. Alternate routes had been coated with grape jelly, and Jason was ultimately forced to choose between potentially slipping and falling down the rather tall pine or losing time by attempting to remove the net.
The image of his brother running back into the front yard, the red flag in hand and a triumphant smile on his lips flashed through his mind. The thought of losing sent a throb of nausea through Jason. He chose to risk injury by taking the jelly route, and, sticky-handed, he climbed breathlessly. He could hear Alex and Marlene struggling and slowly losing to their older counterparts as he neared the top. His hand closed around the flag’s shaft, bringing it to his chest. He caught a yelp from Marlene; she had been cast aside, unable to contain Ellen any longer.
His pulse quickened, shaking him so that he could hear the faint rustle of the blood pounding in his ears. Full of adrenaline, he half slid down the tree, accepting scrapes and bruises in exchange for speed. With a quarter of the tree left for Jason to descend, Ellen appeared below and began to clamber up to apprehend him. Rather than face her another time, Jason took a breath and leapt from the tree, pushing off its trunk and out into the open air. His descent seemed curiously slow and allowed him time to observe that, though Alex still occupied Matt, he would not be able to hold him off for much longer, that Marlene lay crumpled against the rocks to the right of the house, and that Chris’s voice came over the roof: “Hurry, Jason!”
Jason allowed instinct to take over as he neared the ground. He rolled when he reached it which enabled him to run immediately rather than struggle to get up. This made all the difference as a mere moment later and Matt would have broken from Alex in time to stop Jason’s flight; all would have been lost, and Jason would have been proven, definitively, as the lesser brother. As it stood, Matt barely missed his chance, and Jason sped by, through the left side yard and into the backyard where he passed his brother, recently victorious over the ropes. Their eyes met as they passed, both frantic to be the victor in this brothers’ feud. Then Chad was gone toward the front yard, fighting to reach the tree before Jason could reach the porch.
Jason forced his legs to stretch farther and move faster. Rather than fight the traps he could see Marlene had laid, he leapt up from the grass to the porch’s stairs, ran up them to the spot directly above where his flag had been located, and forced a syllable from his heaving lungs: “SAFE!”
He knew he had won when, a moment later, he heard Chad’s not-so-quiet curse. Faintly, he could hear his mother opening the front door and beginning to chastise her eldest for this profanity. Jason grinned, catching Chris’s eye.
“Safe,” he panted.

Dance, Dance, Romance
It was a huge bummer when it rained. The group was gonna go down to the beach, get some ice cream, and stargaze before school started again. But mother nature had other plans for this last week of break, good thing we did too.
Instead of completely canceling the beach thing Arden suggested we go to the arcade. Then to his parents beach house for the night. After checking with parents, we came to the conclusion that it would work for everyone.
Currently, I was kicking Braidy’s butt at Dance Dance Revolution.
“Ugh! Screw you and your dance lessons!” Braidy exclaimed, sounding frustrated but with the biggest smile on her face.
Braidy and I met at a dance studio. We danced together for three years at that studio. But then Braidy’s parents pulled her out to do a “real” sport. Even with several parents telling them that it was in fact a sport, they still pulled her out and put her in softball. If it wasn’t for her encouragement, i’d be playing softball too. Instead she told me, “Keep going with dance, you’ve got something there.”
“I still have to go to one of your recitals, Dianna.” Cleve had been clapping as I took my bow off the DDR machine.
“The recitals are more for the little ones, I do the competitions. So yes, you still have to watch me win a dance competition,” I pause, looking over to Braidy, “again.”
I looked over at Arden. He was smiling at his phone, texting someone. I walked over to him. The closer that I got I realized his face had turned red, and I immediately changed my path toward the prize booth.
I looked at my options to choose from, the space I had left in my bag, and tickets. 5260 tickets. I looked to my right and saw a Nerf gun for 2800 tickets. Bingo. I pointed to it and handed over the tickets. I stuffed both the remaining tickets and prize into my bag and zipped it up before my friends saw what I grabbed. It would be a surprise later tonight at the beach house.
“Hey Dianna!” I turned to where I heard my voice come from. All my friends had gathered at the arcade doors, Cleve had an umbrella in his hand. “We’re headed out!”
“Be right there!” I replied. I watched them step out as I put my raincoat on.
I jogged to the door and stepped outside. Braidy and Cleve had taken the backseats of Arden’s car, leaving me shotgun. Braidy and Cleve swore to Arden and I, and on our own, that they had zero feelings for each other. “It would ruin the friend group! Why would we do that?”
After I got settled in the car I leaned over to Arden and whispered in his ear, “They haven’t ruined the friend group yet.” When I sat back he had a smirk on his face, agreeing with my statement.
For about a year now, I’ve thought of Arden as more than a friend or a best friend. I’ve thought of him as my brother, to make it simple. It’s so easy to hangout with him. We play Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Mario Kart, and there’s nothing awkward between us. At Least I don’t think there is.
Recently he’s been texting someone a lot and his face goes red every time. I suspect it's a girlfriend. But I don't ask about her. If he wanted me to know, then he would’ve told me. Everytime I see it happen, I do get a small awkward feeling. But then it’s gone as soon as he puts the phone down, or I walk away from him.
“Sleepover time!” I hear Braidy yell from behind me, followed by her screams as she opens the car door and runs into the rain.
I grab my stuff and follow her out, a little quieter than her.
~~~
After rooms had delegated and beds set up, we turned on Jaws on the living room TV. Cleve had his arm around Braidy. Arden and I tried to take pictures of them for when they started denying their feelings again.
“Guys, it stopped raining. We should go do something outside!” Braidy paused the movie and started running, Cleve right on her trail.
Arden went to the door, “Dianna you coming?”
“Yeah, checking my phone. I’ll be out in a minute.” I smiled at him. He gave me a soft, kinda cute, smile in return.
I almost grabbed the Nerf gun, but something inside me said not to. So I headed on outside where everyone had already gone down the steps to the sand. Once I joined them in the surf, a splash fight had begun between Braidy and Cleve. I let them have their moment and went to my own little spot to start doing a dance with the water.
“That was gorgeous. Wow.” Arden spoke breathlessly. I felt that awkward feeling again.
“I bet gorgeous is the word you use the ‘gorgeous’ wit your girlfriend to, huh?” I teased him, the awkward feeling was gone.
I saw the silhouette of his face contort. “Girlfriend? What do you mean?” He took a step toward me.
“You were texting her earlier, at the arcade.” I took a step toward him.
I felt a droplet of water hit my arm. The rain would start again soon, I could feel something like electricity in the air.
“No, I was texting my brother, the one currently deployed. He was teasing me about this girl I like.” He spoke, not defensively though, almost like he wanted me to know more, to ask about more.
I took two steps forward. The awkward feeling was back.
“Would I know this girl?” I asked, taking him up on the offer to know more.
“Yes you would, just not the way I know her.” Arden took two steps forward.
“How would I know her?” I took my last step. We were so close our chests almost touched, but not quite. “Is she a perfectly poise girl your parents would love?”
“No. Not at all.” He took an unexpected step forward. Arden grabbed my hands and held them by my side. “She’s gorgeous, graceful, genuine, but above all she is competitive. She’s a friends stick together type of girl. She’s a prankster type of girl. She’s a girl who’s such a wonder, she is named after Wonder Woman.”
He stopped talking. The awkward feeling had turned into something more. I looked into Arden’s eyes and didn't see a friend, or a best friend. I didn't see a brother, but I saw a lover.
“Arden, is this girl you like, is she, me?” I spoke curious.
“You didn’t need to ask. You knew all along.” He chuckled. I looked down, embarrassed.
I felt more rain droplets. Coating my arms, my head, my face once I looked up. I felt a tear fall out of my eye.
“I didn’t know. I had to ask. Arden, for the past year I’ve thought of you as a brother. I’ve looked at you texting your supposed girlfriend and felt awkward. I couldn’t describe the awkward feeling so I called it brotherhood.” I paused, inhaling. “I know what it is now though. Because of you I know what I had been feeling was love.” I let go of hands and threw my arms around his neck.
Arden wrapped his hands around my waist. We stood there on the beach for a few moments, letting the rain fall around us and on us.
“Thank you Arden.” I spoke into the spot where his neck met his shoulder.
“Dianna, I love you.” He pulled out of the hug, still holding me at my waist, and looked into my eyes. “May I give you a gift, Dianna?”
“What kind of gift?” I felt bad for wanting to tread carefully, but I’d only discovered that I had a crush on Arden about two minutes ago.
“A kick-ball-change, inside turn, shuffle, slide.”
“A, what?” I was so confused.
I thought over the words he'd told me, as the rain picked up density. Arden loved to give me puzzles to solve, and I had another one to add to the book of solved.
I quickly raised my lips to his and kissed him. After a couple seconds I broke the kiss and answered his question, “Yes. Yes you can give me a kiss!”
Arden moved his hand to hold my head. “That's my smart girl.” He brought my face to his and, unlike last time, our tongues shared a dance under the rain.
There was a small flash of light that caused the dance to break. Braidy and Cleve had gotten a picture of us.
“I’m gonna get you for that!” I yelled at them.
They started to run, and I almost chased them, but Arden held me back. “Give them a head start. Dance with me instead?”
So, sure the rain had been a bummer, but by the end of the night Arden and I had turned that bummer gun into summer fun.
Nerf is debuting on Tuesday a new type of ammo that — unlike the toy-maker’s famous foam darts — doesn’t require any picking up. The new Nerf Pro Gelfire Mythic Full Auto Blaster fires out Nerf’s new gel-based hydro rounds and can shoot them at a rate of 10 per second.
The gel blaster’s design looks similar to that of a paintball gun, but the rounds are different. The polymer rounds are soaked in water before being loaded into the blaster’s feed hopper, which holds up to 800 of the 10,000 rounds. Once fired, the hydro projectiles burst and dissolve when they hit a target, eliminating cleanup.
The gel blaster was announced ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, which starts later this week, and it’s scheduled to be on shelves by Nov. 1. Priced at $80, the blaster is currently available for preorder at Target and Amazon. It’s recommended for those ages 14 and older.
Earlier this year, Nerf announced a Star Wars themed blaster, specifically modeled after Boba Fett’s EE-3 blaster, and the Ultra Speed blaster, which fires seven darts per second.
The hydrated rounds fire from the automatic blaster at a high velocity and burst when they hit a target. No need to pick up rounds! The Nerf Pro Gelfire Ghost blaster features a removable boost barrel for distance targeting and an extendable buttstock. The integrated hopper has 100-round capacity. Includes 5,000 dehydrated Nerf Pro Gelfire soft super absorbent polymer projectiles. The blaster’s innovative design combines exceptional quality and style. Nerf blasters make great gifts for teens. Includes protective eyewear and trigger lock. Outdoor use recommended. For ages 14 and up. Nerf and all related properties are trademarks of Hasbro.
I'm working on getting stuff together for a LARP that uses nerf guns, and I am glad I did a live fire practice test. Both of the nerf blasters I had wanted to use were kind of... very underwhelming. One kept having darts fall out (alas, poor Roughcut), one kept spiraling shots (alas, poor Maverick).
Only one that seems worth it was the one that also isn't the super best performer, but is pretty and very paintable (huzzah, hammershot!). It was reliable, and while it wouldn't win me any gunfights it sure was a lot better than the other options.
I'll get together a better blaster when I have more time and money. I've got some blasters that kick face in, that I use for HvZ or serious competition, but those look like a modern rifle and aren't any good for a LARP where the main goal of a blaster is looking 19th century ish.
One day I'll make that hand finished wooden stock for a nerf gun. It will be a very silly, very good day.
So mad that Logia is losing to some guy I can promise you is not as good a dad
That is because no one can surpass Dadmom
But yeah, the positive comments make me feel better
😭😭😭😭
the thing is that i've heard our rival is also a very good dad and everything (apparently he's a father figure who also watches over his adopted children over the multiverses. It really was the multiverse dads battle), but like. Cards on table, i had the notification turned on on the poll at all time so i saw every single addition, and our rival's fans didn't really bother giving me a big idea of what's up there.
So yeah in the end even if i want to be fair bc i do not know the guy.......
Orologia was our parent in 570 Millions lifetimes 😭 they wrapped and changed reality 570 Millions times just to keep us safe and happy 😭😭😭😭
In my heart i know no fictional parent will ever be on Orologia's level. They went too hard. They'll never be topped. Sorry it's true!
But alas gbf being more niche than not always nerf us in this type of competition polls, so alas...
but still, man, we legit fought hard for Logia, i honestly didn't expect the overall small gbf community on tumblr would manage to unite for this one. and threaten their non-gbf friends to vote at gun point. We probably got a lot of votes out of that but hey we gotta do what we gotta do-
but yeah, i've been seeing the comments in the tags and it's honestly super touching to see people being just THIS dedicated in trying to have Logia win. I know they're going to lose this turn, but personally i won, to have seen so many people loving them so hard, trying so hard to have the world see how good Logia is.
I've seen some comments of people who read my propaganda too and started to get emotional for Logia as a result despite not knowing gbf and that's my greatest pride as it is. I even saw someone mention the propaganda made them care for Logia so much they wanted to play gbf, and then i saw them reblog the post days later being upset Orologia is losing, and it's like... if it was just the base post it would be one thing, but that it impacted enough that you're coming back to check on them? i'm going to cry.
that's Logia's impact on us all, i guess.
We still managed to get steady with only 10% of distance with our rival. And it still made 300 of us trying so hard to vote for them. I say, we did good. We did as best we could.
So we have nothing to be upset about!
(and honestly i've seen poll battles turn bloody, this one has been super chill even if we're losing so i'm at peace at least)
but man. Logia............ we know you're the best dadmom.... we know... sobs...
