Happy Father's Day: A Tribute To My Loving Dad

When I was very young about three years old, my Mom was sent to attend trainings in other countries and all over the Philippines. Basically, it was my Dad who was taking care of me then. I can also recall spending time with my Lolo and Lola in San Pablo City whenever my Dad needed to work and someone had to take care of me.

We were living at the Manzano’s Compound then when I was young. Then in 1981, my parents decided to build their own home at San Isidro Village. Due to lack of funds, my Dad was forced to work outside the country. He went to Dammam, KSA to work as I believe a Telephone Operator. Then after a year or two, he was transferred to Riyadh, KSA to work as a Computer Operator at Saudi Telecommunications Company.

I only got to see him once a year whenever he would have his vacations in the Philippines. Those were very short vacations which I neglected to enjoy.

Back in 1982, I was bullied in school. My classmates were teasing me up to the point that I had to skip classes and spend the afternoon at the waiting shed. Then someone, a Teacher perhaps, asked me what I was doing there, and I told her everything. This prompted my Mom to have me take an exam in a different school for which during the exam day, the primary bully also took the exam.

I never left my elementary school and continued my studies there. I remember those instances where in my Dad and I during his vacations would wait for my Mom to get out of the office and spend our time eating a burger at Burger Machine.

Then when I was in first year high school, my Dad was able to apply us for family visas and I was able to have short vacations in Riyadh, KSA twice a year. I remember there was this one Christmas vacation when I was there and my Dad got laid off. We stayed at my Aunt’s place then and with his savings he gave me a Swatch watch and Nike shoes as his Christmas gift for me.

Looking back, I was you could say, NOT an ideal daughter. I would have fights with him and even ran away once when we had a terrible fight. Such an ungrateful daughter, right? When this man had practically sacrificed his whole prime years away from his family just to put food on our table and fund the unfinished home we had back then.

Ama, if you are reading this now, do know that I love you with all my heart and that I’m very grateful to God that I have you as my Dad. No one could ever replace you and for me, you’re the best Dad in the whole, wide world! Thank you for the unconditional love you have shown me since I was little. You never stopped loving me even though I have been rebellious before. Although you lose your patience on me sometimes, I believe any Dad would have done the same.

You are my HERO… that one person besides Ina who I know I could ALWAYS count on. I LOVE YOU PO and Happy Father’s Day!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

Vlaanderen uit de NAVO, de NAVO uit Vlaanderen!

Vlaanderen in een multipolaire wereld We leven steeds meer in een multipolaire wereld. Toen de Koude Oorlog beëindigd werd aan het eind van de jaren ’80 en de Sovjetunie vervolgens onverwachts implodeerde, werd Amerika de enige supermacht ter wereld. Voortaan regeerde de Pax Americana. Francis Fukuyama kondigde het einde van de geschiedenis aan, de Amerikaanse president Bush sr. verkondigde het ontstaan van een nieuwe wereldorde. De daaropvolgende decennia zouden gekenmerkt worden door een liberale wereldorde, die desnoods manu militari werd opgelegd. Amerikaans interventionisme in het Midden-Oosten (Irak, Afghanistan), Latijns-Amerika (Haïti, Nicaragua) en Oost-Europa (Joegoslavië) bracht alle regimes ten val die in ongenade vielen en niet langer bruikbaar waren in de strijd tegen het wereldcommunisme, of die restanten vertoonden van ideologieën die niet langer binnen het kader van de nieuwe wereldorde bestaansrecht hadden (zoals het Arabisch socialisme in Irak of de restanten van het twintigste-eeuwse communisme in Joegoslavië). De bankencrisis maakte een einde aan deze zeepbel. Het westers economisch model bleek niet langer zaligmakend, andere landen werkten zich steeds meer op tot een niveau waarop ze een zelfstandige koers konden beginnen varen ten aanzien van de VS en West-Europa, waarbij vooral de rol opviel van de BRIC’s (Brazilië, Rusland, India en China). In het daaropvolgende decennium zou China zich verder ontwikkelen tot een economische grootmacht, terwijl Rusland dankzij haar herwonnen assertiviteit eerst militaire successen afdwong in haar eigen periferie (Zuid-Ossetië, Donbas, Lugansk, de Krim) en daarna ook in het buitenland (Syrië, Venezuela). Tegenwoordig projecteren de nieuwe grootmachten van Eurazië (China, Rusland, Turkije en Indië) nieuwe geopolitieke macht dankzij economische initiatieven (het Belt & Road-programma van China of het Russisch atoomagentschap Rosatom) en diplomatieke successen. Oude rivalen groeien naar elkaar toe, vroegere bondgenoten van het westen worden minder betrouwbaar (zoals Saoedi-Arabië) of vallen langzaam weg (zoals Turkije). Zo wordt de rol van Halford Mckinder’s continentale hartland nieuw leven ingeblazen, terwijl de Atlantische randzone aan belang is aan het in boeten. Zoals de Engelsman Mckinder voorspeld had (en gevreesd!) in de negentiende eeuw, speelt connectiviteit op het Eurazisch continent hierin een zeer voorname rol. Het is echter dit keer niet de hegemonie van het Britse koloniale rijk die hierdoor wordt uitgedaagd, maar het westers liberalisme en haar wereldorde, die bewaakt wordt door de Noord-Atlantische Verdragsorganisatie (NAVO). In ieder geval lijkt een wereldwijde globalisatie naar westers model een bijzonder ijdele gedachte geworden. Het is daarom des te meer verwonderlijk dat sommige staatslieden en prominenten nog steeds beweren dat diegenen die haar afwijzen aan “de verkeerde kans van de geschiedenis staan”. Daarentegen krijgen we steeds meer een uitsplitsing van de wereld in geopolitieke clusters, beschavingen zo men wil, waarbij een toenemende polarisatie tussen oost en west opnieuw centraal staat. In deze nieuwe wereld dient een soeverein Vlaanderen opnieuw een weg te vinden. Het beste kan het hierbij op zoek naar partners waarmee het een gemeenschappelijk ideologisch kader deelt en complementaire geografische belangen heeft. Het atlanticisme en occidentalisme die tot op de dag van vandaag de mainstream blijven en door links noch rechts in twijfel worden getrokken, hebben hierbij niettemin hun beste tijd gehad. De NAVO als verouderd machtsinstrument Na het eind van de Koude Oorlog is de NAVO blijven bestaan, hoewel het gaat om een verouderd, imperialistisch instituut. De NAVO ontstond in 1949 als een alliantie tussen de West-Europese landen en de VS en Canada. De bedoeling was om te verhinderen dat het door de Tweede Wereldoorlog ernstig verzwakte en geruïneerde West-Europa door het Rode Leger onder de voet zou worden gelopen. Nochtans hadden de landen van Oost-Europa zelf heel wat wonden te likken. De Sovjetunie verloor tussen 25 en 30 miljoen van haar inwoners, zowel soldaten als burgerbevolking. Ook Polen was zeer zwaar getroffen en verloor tussen de 15 en 20% van haar bevolking. Buiten de Europa waren de verliezen het grootst in China, dat zwaar geleden had onder de Sino-Japanse oorlog. Ook in Estland, Letland, Litouwen, Hongarije en Joegoslavië waren de verliezen bijzonder groot. In Oost-Duitsland hadden de geallieerde bombardementen en de bittere gevechten met de Sovjets diepe sporen nagelaten. Het valt dus zeer te betwijfelen dat in deze landen de motivatie en slagkracht te vinden was om een militaire invasie in het westen op poten te zetten. In 1954 stelden de Sovjets op de Conferentie van Berlijn voor om zelf toe te treden tot de NAVO. De Amerikanen zouden in deze nieuwe militaire veiligheidsorganisatie het statuut van waarnemer krijgen, samen met China. Uiteraard namen de VS hier geen genoegen mee. Hoewel de Russische minister van defensie Molotov stelde dat hierover te onderhandelen viel, strandde het voorstel al snel op de onbuigzaamheid van de Amerikanen. Als reactie hierop richtten de landen van Oost-Europa vervolgens het Warschaupact op. Een IJzeren Gordijn liep vanaf dat moment dwars door Europa. Een waanzinnige wapenwedloop volgde daarop. Omdat de conventionele legermacht van het Warschaupact op termijn een duidelijk overwicht begon op te bouwen ten aanzien van die van de NAVO, werd nucleaire proliferatie dé manier waarop het westen haar macht probeerde door te drukken. Maar ook hier overvleugelde het Oostblok het westen vanaf de jaren ’70, zij het dat dit overwicht eerder symbolisch was aangezien beide kampen ondertussen een arsenaal hadden opgebouwd dat groot genoeg was om tot Mutually Assured Destruction te leiden. Er was niettemin een zekere discrepantie in de aanvalsplannen van de NAVO-bondgenoten ten aanzien van deze van het Warschaupact. Nog in het begin van de jaren ’80 oefenden deze laatsten een aanvalsscenario aan de hand van een oorlogssimulatie waarbij in negen dagen tot aan de Rijn zou worden opgerukt. Hierbij was de strategische inzet van kernwapens weliswaar aan de orde, maar daarna zou de oorlog voornamelijk conventioneel worden gevoerd. De Amerikanen koesterden daarentegen reeds van in de jaren ’50 het plan om het hele grondgebied van Oost-Europa onbewoonbaar te maken door middel van totale vernietiging en kernbommen op iedere grote en middelgrote stad in Rusland, Polen, Tsjechoslowakije, Hongarije, Roemenië en Bulgarije. Een onderscheid tussen burger- en militaire doelwitten werd niet gemaakt, collateral damage was hetzelfde als structurele schade. Ondertussen werden in de Derde Wereld proxy-oorlogen uitgevochten tussen door het westen gesteunde autocraten en nationale bevrijdingsbewegingen met materiële en militaire steun van Cuba, Tsjechoslowakije en de Sovjetunie.

"Mutually assured destruction" Aan dit alles kwam een einde toen de Koude Oorlog beëindigd werd. Geheel in tegenspraak met de afspraken die gemaakt waren met Mikhail Gorbatsjov, breidde de NAVO aan het eind van de jaren ’90 stevig uit in oostelijke richting, waarmee de fundamenten werden gelegd voor de conflicten die Georgië en Oekraïne tot op de dag van vandaag verscheuren. Toen de Amerikaanse war on terror uitbrak, werd het grondgebied van de nieuwe lidstaten misbruikt om martelingen en mensenrechtenschendingen uit te voeren (waaronder het beruchte waterboarding). In de oostelijke NAVO-landen werd tevens aan een raketschild gewerkt, zogenaamd om aanvallen uit Iran te weren waar nochtans geen enkele pertinente dreiging van uitgaat, noch zijn er aanwijzingen dat dit op enige denkbare termijn ook maar ooit het geval zal zijn. Hiermee werd Rusland steeds verder geprovoceerd tot de assertieve houding die het de dag van vandaag aan de dag legt. Nochtans werd er aan het eind van de jaren ’80 duidelijk de hand gereikt vanuit het oosten om een gezamenlijke vredesorganisatie uit de grond te stampen, die voortaan gezamenlijk de stabiliteit van de wereldvrede kon garanderen. Men kan zich voorstellen wat dit allemaal betekend zou hebben voor de wereldorde, en hoe het mogelijk zou zijn geweest om met een dergelijke organisatie te bemiddelen in belangrijke conflicten in de Derde Wereld en het Midden-Oosten, waar nu het westers interventionisme unilateraal haar dictaten heeft proberen op te leggen. Een multipolair samenwerkingsverband in plaats van het slappe optreden van de Verenigde Naties, dat een grote genocide in Rwanda niet kon verhinderen, had als niet-imperialistische, pluralistische vredesorganisatie waarin zowel oost als west verenigd waren veel steviger kunnen ingrijpen. In 1989 werden de feiten van 1954 dus nog eens herhaald. Nochtans kon nu bezwaarlijk worden aangehaald dat het om een valstrik van de Sovjets zou gaan. Daarenboven werd het aanbod van de Sovjetunie om een wereldwijd totaalverbod op kernwapens te realiseren afgeslagen door Bush sr. en zijn administratie.

Amerikaanse troepen in Afghanistan In de plaats daarvan ontvouwde zich een westerse, uitgesproken kapitalistische – maar niet noodzakelijk liberale – geopolitieke as tussen Washington, Brussel, Tel Aviv en Riyadh, die de daaropvolgende decennia de balans in de wereld zou bepalen. De belangen van het IMF en de Wereldbank gingen hierbij voorop. Latijns-Amerika bleef hierbij meer dan ooit de achtertuin van de VS, tot in 1999 de Bolivariaanse revolutie in Venezuela daarin een zekere kentering teweeg kon brengen. Grote delen van Afrika vervielen in de jaren ’90 tot chaos. De failed states van Sub-Saharaans Afrika vormden een ideale kweekbodem voor radicale tegenbewegingen zoals het islamitisch fundamentalisme. In Oost-Europa werden de laatste resten van het communisme opgeruimd met de bombardementen op Servië. Dit precaire evenwicht kreeg een symbolische deuk toen de aanslagen van 9/11 in 2001 de Amerikaanse wereldhegemonie uitdaagden. Het westen reageerde met een totale war on terror. De invasies in Afghanistan en Irak waren het directe gevolg. Deze laatste gebeurde op grond van valse voorwendselen, leugens over massavernietigingswapens waarover het Ba’ath-regime van het land zou beschikken werden aan de westerse wereld voorgeschoteld om een moreel draagvlak voor de invasie te creëren. De Verenigde Staten als “politieman van de wereld”, die schurkenstaten opruimde met de bescheiden assistentie van haar hulpsheriffs, de landen van de NAVO, of ‘old Europe’ zoals Donald Rumsfeld het op de vooravond van de Irak-oorlog het welhaast schertsend omschreef. De filmscenario’s van de Hollywoodindustrie dienden werkelijkheid te worden in het posthistorische tijdperk. Toen de Arabische Lente uitbrak werd dit voor een laatste keer geïllustreerd in Libië, waar de Europeanen gewillig het vuile werk van de Amerikanen opknapten. Rusland en China In de multipolaire wereld van vandaag wordt het concept van de global governance met de VS als imperialistische politiemacht echter uitgedaagd. Kort na de bankencrisis van 2008 viel een hernieuwde assertiviteit te signaleren bij Rusland, dat in het najaar van datzelfde jaar met het grootste gemak een conflict over Zuid-Ossetië in zijn voordeel wist te beslechten in een korte oorlog tegen het prowesterse regime in Georgië. Rusland was gedurende decennia in het westen afgeschilderd als niets minder dan een failed state;een Derde Wereldland met kernwapens die lagen te verroesten in instortende legerbarakken uit lang vervlogen tijden. Nu kon alleen een voor de Georgiërs nadelige wapenstilstand verhinderen dat de Russische tanks in enkele dagen oprukten tot in Tbilisi. Toen het westen vijf jaar later nog maar eens een kleurenrevolutie trachtte door te drukken in Oekraïne, werd opnieuw door Rusland zeer assertief opgetreden. De annexatie van de Krim en de onafhankelijkheid van de volksrepublieken in Donetsk en Lugansk zijn hiervan het gevolg. Internationaal wist Rusland nieuw aanzien te creëren door diplomatiek en militair in te grijpen in Syrië en meer recentelijk ook in Venezuela. Het westen ziet hierdoor zijn macht om regimeveranderingen af te dwingen ernstig ingeperkt. Verschillende malen leken regeringen, die enkele jaren daarvoor nog met grote zekerheid ten dode zouden zijn opgeschreven zoals nog het geval was in Libië in 2011, nu veel levensvatbaarder dan kon worden vermoed. Ondertussen timmeren de Russen aan het ontstaan van een Euraziatische Unie. Een mogelijke fusie met Wit-Rusland wordt door beide landen in het vooruitzicht gesteld.

Met hernieuwde assertiviteit sluit Rusland weer aan bij haar Koude Oorlog-profiel China maakte sinds de regering van Deng Xiaoping een gestage economische groei door. Vanaf het eind van de jaren ’80 werd duidelijk dat – met het succes van de veel kleinere Aziatische tijgers in het achterhoofd – deze groei er vroeg of laat toe moest leiden dat China de Verenigde Staten naar de kroon zou steken als economische supermacht. Aan het eind van het tweede decennium van de eenentwintigste eeuw komt dit stadium eindelijk in zicht. Het Belt & Road-initiatief creëert nieuwe zijderoutes dwars over Eurazië en de Stille Oceaan. Wereldwijd neemt de Chinese invloed toe, waarbij de Chinezen investeringen en infrastructuur als ruilgeld gebruiken in plaats van “Europese waarden” of “freedom & democracy”. De VS proberen om hun tanende macht te compenseren met protectionisme en handelsoorlogen. De plotse nadruk op de Amerikaanse soevereiniteit, die door Trump zogenaamd met hand en tand wordt verdedigd, is niet meer dan een symptoom van het feit dat de belangen van de VS voor het eerst in meer dan honderd jaar niet langer gebaat zijn bij expansie en global governance, maar bij een terugplooien van het land als grootmacht op zijn eigen hemisfeer, het Amerikaanse continent.  Vanuit dit perspectief wordt de NAVO ook voor de Amerikanen stilaan een atavisme, waarvan ze zich gaan afvragen of de kosten nog wel de baten dekken. Het Midden-Oosten: van revolutionair Arabisch nationalisme naar reactionair salafisme Nergens laat de geopolitieke instabiliteit van het huidige systeem zich sterker voelen dan in het Midden-Oosten. Gedurende de Koude Oorlog was de regio eveneens het toneel van de geopolitieke rivaliteit tussen oost en west. De verzwakte West-Europese grootmachten boden een kans aan de volkeren van het Midden-Oosten om het koloniale juk van zich af te werpen. Onder visionaire leiders als Gamal Abdel Nasser wisten Arabische landen zoals Egypte hun eigen belangen te ontworstelen uit de klauwen van de koloniale machten, zoals werd bewezen door de nationalisatie van het Suezkanaal. De Arabieren ontwikkelden in de Levant en Mesopotamië hun eigen variant van het nationalisme en het socialisme, aangepast aan de historische en geografische omstandigheden van hun regio. In schril contrast daarmee stonden de reactionaire regimes op het Arabische schiereiland, waar oliesjeiks slapend rijk werden dankzij de consumptie- en groeidrang van het westen. Deze regimes kregen actieve steun van de VS, in zoverre zij hun doelstellingen om de Koude Oorlog te winnen konden helpen realiseren.

moslimfundamentalisme verving het nationalisme en communisme als ontvoogdende Derde Wereld-ideologie Symbolisch voor de nieuwe wereldorde was de eerste invasie in Irak in 1991, nadat dat land zich meester had weten te maken van de oliebronnen van het Koeweit. Nationalisme, socialisme en communisme gingen in het Midden-Oosten samen ten onder. Het door de Amerikanen om strategische redenen gesponsorde islamfundamentalisme, ontsponnen aan staten als Saoedi-Arabië en Qatar maar regelmatig ook gesponsord door het westen, bijvoorbeeld om de Sovjets te dwarsbomen in Afghanistan, maakte vanaf de vroege jaren ’90 een steile opgang door en verving de eerstgenoemden als mobiliserende en ontvoogdende ideologie. Grote delen van de Derde Wereld raakten erdoor besmet, met chaos, anarchie en tribalisering van desintegrerende nationale staten tot gevolg. Hoewel vaak gepresenteerd als grote tegenpool van de decadente westen, gaat het eerder om de schaduwzijde ervan. Israël en Palestina Een belangrijke partner voor de belangen van het westen in het Midden-Oosten werd altijd gevormd door de staat Israël. In 1948 gesticht in voormalig Brits-Palestina, heeft de Israëlische staat zich geleidelijk meester weten te maken van een groot deel van de zuidelijke Levant. De Balfour-verklaring van 1917, door de Britse Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Arthur James Balfour geschreven aan de joodse bankier Lionel Walter Rothschild, was een tactische zet die de Europese joden aan de kant van de geallieerden diende te krijgen. Hierbij werden concessies gedaan aan de Zionistische Beweging, met de belofte van een joods tehuis in Palestina in het vooruitzicht. In schril contrast met het latere verloop van de geschiedenis, gingen Arabisch nationalisme en zionisme aan het prille begin van het post-Ottomaanse tijdperk na afloop van WO I hand in hand. De Faisal-Weizmann-overeenkomst, die werd ondertekend op 3 januari 1919, voorzag in de uitbouw van een dergelijk joods tehuis in Palestina. Faisal I was een van de drijvende krachten achter de Arabische opstand tegen de Ottomanen en werd na de Eerste Wereldoorlog kortstondig koning van Syrië, tot hij in 1920 uiteindelijk door de Fransen werd verdreven. Uiteindelijk werd hij koning van het Brits mandaatgebied in Irak tussen 1921 en 1934. De pan-Arabische staat die aan zijn vader door de geallieerden was beloofd, werd echter nooit gerealiseerd. In plaats daarvan sloten de westerse imperialistische machten het Sykes-Picot-verdrag, waarbij de Arabische wereld werd opgedeeld in mandaatgebieden. Chaim Weizman was een jood van Wit-Russische afkomst, die in het kader van zijn universitaire studies na tal van omzwervingen uiteindelijk in Groot-Brittannië terecht kwam en het Brits staatsburgerschap verkreeg. De overeenkomst tussen beiden moest leiden tot een hechte Arabisch-joodse samenwerking, maar beide partijen werden door de westerse koloniale machten verraden. Noch de Arabieren, noch de joden verkregen een eigen stuk land in Palestina. Later zou blijken dat hiermee de kans op een harmonieus samenlevingsmodel tussen beide gemeenschappen in de regio meteen definitief was verkeken. Door de verslechterende situatie in Europa nam de joodse migratie naar Palestina toe, en dit werd uiteindelijk gekanaliseerd in een concreet en versneld initiatief om een eigen staat uit te bouwen in het Midden-Oosten. In tegenstelling tot wat in bepaalde kringen werd verwacht, ontpopte het land zich uiteindelijk niet tot een socialistische staat. Nochtans was de rebellenbeweging die in Palestina een oorlog was begonnen tegen de Britten in belangrijke mate het product van een alliantie tussen zionisten en socialisten. In de praktijk zouden bepaalde recepten uit het socialisme wel worden geïntroduceerd, zo was het collectieve landbouwsysteem van de kibboets, dat werd gebruikt om land te koloniseren en door joden te laten ontginnen, in essentie gebaseerd op de ideeën van de Russische anarchist en bolsjewist Kropotkin. Maar uiteindelijk werd Israël vooral een bondgenoot van het westen, waarbij het zijn belangen wist te verweven met die van invloedrijke lobby’s in de Amerikaanse en Europese grootsteden. Een kantelpunt werd gevormd in het jaar 1942, toen de Verenigde Staten – in plaats van de Britten – de nieuwe bondgenoot werden waar de Zionisten hun hoop op vestigden voor de vorming van een joodse staat in Palestina. Vanaf dan verschoof het accent van een migratie en kolonisatie van – een deel van – Palestina door joodse inwijkelingen naar een dominantie van Palestina (en later de gehele regio) door de nieuwe joodse staat. De stichting van de staat Israël in 1948 ging gepaard met de Nakba, de gedwongen migratie van 700 000 Palestijnen met hulp van het Britse leger. Vanuit de Arabische bevolking van Palestina (islamitisch zowel als christelijk) ontstond een tegenbeweging van verzet, die in 1964 cumuleerde in de oprichting van de PLO. De gebiedsuitbreiding van Israël was tevens een doorn in het oog van de nieuwe Arabische landen, zoals Egypte, Syrië en Jordanië, die zich eveneens van het koloniale juk van de Engelsen en Fransen hadden weten te ontworstelen. Twee oorlogen in 1967 en in 1973 leidden echter tot een militaire triomf voor Israël. De Zesdaagse Oorlog deed zo’n 200 000 Palestijnen vluchten naar Jordanië.

Met de val van het IJzeren Gordijn en het ontstaan van een unipolaire wereld, hebben de Palestijnen en de Arabische buren van Israël geen sterke bondgenoten meer. Tegelijkertijd wordt het land vanuit Tel Aviv geregeerd door de uiterst rechtse regering van Benjamin Netanyahu. De gevolgen laten zich in duidelijk voelen in Palestina. Venezuela Nergens wordt het einde van de unipolaire wereld beter geïllustreerd dan in Venezuela. In 1999 werd daar Hugo Chávez tot president verkozen. De Bolivariaanse ideologie van het chavismo daagde de internationale wereldorde van het IMF en de Wereldbank uit. Na de dood van Chavez ging het economisch echter snel bergaf. Deels had dit te maken met het feit dat Chavez’ opvolger Maduro een zwakker beleid voerde dan zijn voorganger, maar ook met een gerichte overproductie aan olie door de Amerikaanse bondgenoot Saoedi-Arabië, die de Venezolaanse economie – volledig afhankelijk van de olieproductie - deed instorten. Een tijdlang dreigde een Amerikaanse militaire interventie die zou moeten uitmonden in regime change, nadat de rechtse oppositieleider Guaidó zich met westerse financiële steun tot tegenpresident liet uitroepen, hierin aanvankelijk gesteund door een deel van de bevolking.  Hoewel dit laatste sterk werd opgeklopt door de westerse media, bleek deze steun veel uiteindelijk veel minder massaal dan verwacht en mislukte een poging om de macht via de straat over te nemen. Opvallend was dat de steun voor beide tegenstanders in belangrijke mate uiteen leek te vallen in een westers blok, bestaande uit de meeste landen van de OAS en de EU, en een Euraziatisch blok, met daarin als voornaamste spelers de vier continentale machten Rusland, China, Turkije en Iran. Ook verschillende socialistische landen in Zuid-Amerika, zoals Cuba, Suriname, Bolivia en Nicaragua bleven Maduro erkennen als rechtmatige president van Venezuela, terwijl Mexico - dat vorig jaar een linkse president verkoos in de vorm van Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador - samen met Uruguay aanbood om te bemiddelen en dus een soort van tussenpositie innam. Deze complexe belangenverstrengeling maakt duidelijk dat regime change er anno 2019 niet zomaar meer met een vingerknip in Washington komt, ook niet in haar eigen achtertuin.  Terug naar de pacifistische wortels van de Vlaamse Beweging Toen de Vlaamse beweging van een cultureel-nationalistische naar een politiek emancipatorische beweging evolueerde, was het in essentie een pacifistische beweging. Uit de ellende van de Eerste Wereldoorlog was het inzicht ontstaan dat de nationale staten en haar elites haar bevolking in een diepe tragedie hadden meegesleurd, en dat het Vlaams proletariaat enkel als kanonnenvoer had gediend. Hieruit ontstond in 1919 de Frontpartij, die de gedachte “nooit meer oorlog”, “godsvrede” en “zelfbestuur” in het vaandel droeg. In schril contrast hiermee staat de taal die veel hedendaagse Vlaams-nationalisten aanslaan met betrekking tot de aankoop van NAVO-gevechtsmateriaal, het Belgische leger en de inzet van “boots on the ground” in internationale interventies en regime change-missies. De N-VA toonde zich in het verleden een enthousiast supporter van de NAVO. Zo steunde de partij de bombardementen in Libië en Syrië. Het is tevens onbegrijpelijk dat extreemrechtse populisten in Europa – zogenaamde nationalisten die opkomen voor de soevereiniteit der volkeren – met groot enthousiasme tegen dit brute Israëlische beleid, dat indruist tegen het meest elementaire volkerenrecht, aan blijven schurken. Het meest karikaturaal wordt dit geïllustreerd door de Nederlandse PVV, dat een monomane vorm van islamofobie weet te combineren met een geopolitiek en cultureel Zionisme, waarvan het symbolische belang voor het programma van de partij welhaast even groot is als de eerder kleinburgerlijk aandoende versie van de Nederlandse identiteit die het in haar campagnefilmpjes tracht te projecteren, voornamelijk een kwestie lijkt van eerder toeristisch aandoende clichés zoals windmolens, klompen, ijsschaatsen en de Nederlandse vlag. Weliswaar minder uitgesproken en monolithisch, kent bij ons ook het Vlaams Belang gelijkaardige lobby’s van smakeloos, door Pamela Geller & co geëxporteerd anti-islamisme gecombineerd met – vaak eenzijdige – liefdesverklaringen aan de joodse gemeenschap in Antwerpen. Waar het op Vlaams-nationalisme aankomt, kiest deze echter liever voor de N-VA, getuige de recente stap van Joods Actueel-hoofdredacteur Michael Freilich als kandidaat voor de partij.

Nooit meer oorlog, een oude maar vergeten eis van de Vlaamse Beweging? Een soeverein Vlaanderen kan echter alleen dan beschikken over de sleutels van haar toekomst, als ze zich los kan maken van het internationale kapitaal en haar politiemacht. Een soeverein volk dat helpt om andere soevereine volkeren in het gelid van een globale wereldorde te bombarderen, kan niet zelfstandig worden genoemd. De herinnering aan grote staatslieden als Camille Huysmans, socialist, flamingant en pacifist, wordt maar al te graag vergeten door zowel links als rechts. Nochtans ligt daar een blik op de toekomst verscholen. Een anti-imperialistisch en sociaal Vlaanderen dat samen in de wereld staat met andere, gelijkaardige sociale naties, en deze waar nodig ondersteunt in hun nationale bevrijding van het internationale grootkapitaal. Barista competitions and brewing exhibitions. Tasting challenges, coffee cocktail showdowns, and roast curve battles. You can expect to see events like these when you attend a global Specialty Coffee Association event—but there’s one more competition afoot that fits in a different way.

We’re talking about the World Cezve/Ibrik Championship, which rewards the best handlers of a small brewing pot known as a cezve or an ibrik, sometimes known colloquially as “Turkish coffee.” This past June in Budapest, the Cezve/Ibrik Championship took place under the same roof as four other international barista games as part of the World of Coffee Events portfolio. It was last staged alongside other WCE events in 2014 in Rimini, with new rules since implemented and updated for this year’s event in Hungary.

It’s been a long road to this point for the competition. Since the CIC’s official debut in 2009 in Cologne, some countries “have struggled to find enough competitors to run a national championship in the past,” reported the SCAE’s Café Europa spring 2016 edition. Written on behalf of the CIC working group, the same article outlined revised rules and regulations to “make this competition more attractive and accessible for baristas who had no experience with this brewing method” as well as “easier to evaluate by judges experienced in other barista competitions.”

A year later, those intentions were incarnated in Jeremy Challender, the UK’s 2016 Brewer’s Cup Champion serving as a 2017 CIC judge. “We used to see dancers on stage, or drummers,” he recalled, addressing the competition’s earlier reputation for flamboyance. “It’s slowly getting pulled into World of Coffee [specifications], which I don’t think makes it less interesting—it just probably makes it easier to judge. So the spectrum is maybe a little bit narrowed, but I would still stay it probably gives you the most creative scope.”

Last year’s fusion of the Specialty Coffee Association’s American and European organizations seems to be facilitating a more robust, inter-hemispheric backing of the CIC. “With strong ties to the region, the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe has been the primary organizer and promoter of the Cezve/Ibrik Championship, keeping it close to its roots,” WCE marketing manager Alex Bernson wrote in an email. “The World Coffee Events team has been able to more directly collaborate with the European team on the Cezve/Ibrik Championship.” In Budapest, the CIC shared the floor with the World Cup Tasters Championship, “a great opportunity to expand the audience for both championships,” Bernson says.

As the ten contestants each took 15 minutes to make a simple drink and a signature drink, the crowd was rapt. Besides many a proper copper coffee pot, 2017’s CIC included very now tools of the trade—AeroPresses, whipping syphons, and culinary syringes, to name a few. Presentation music ranged from traditional loud instrumentalization to “Stairway to Heaven.” To capture their hopefuls on film, supporters hovered heavily over the rope cordoning. National flags were waved and draped.

The 2017 gold trophy went to Karthikeyan Rajendram, a quality controller at Raw Coffee Company in Dubai, whose own personal trajectory reflects the ibrik’s increasingly global and globalizing orbit. Originally from southern India, the 23 year old represented United Arab Emirates, where he had moved to work for McDonald’s. Rajendram told Sprudge he was still “making burgers” upon entering—and winning—UAE’s national CIC in 2014.

Of his now-favorite technique, he said, “It can get a better taste and tactile balance, better than an espresso.” Living in an Islamic country has upped his game, too. “[Most Muslims] don’t drink alcohol,” he explained. “Coffee—that’s their only choice—so if you can make it right, people love that.” He won with a natural Yirgacheffe produced by MoPlaCo and used glass ibriks because “it looks very sexy” when you see the water boiling.

Also iconoclastic, at least in the modern-era arc of this half-millennium-old method, was second place winner Dionisis Mousits’s coffee choice. The Greek contestant’s Panama Geisha sourced from La Lajones Estate full-on pooh-poohed the old stereotype of an ibrik prepared with low-quality beans and multiple boils that produces a bitter, burnt taste demanding sweeteners.

Reflecting on the event a couple weeks later, 2014 CIC champion Turgay Yildizli shared mixed feelings. “It’s good and bad for this competition to be with the other competitions. There are a lot of people visiting these trade shows and the competitions, and they see the cezve/ibrik,” he told Sprudge. However, sometimes “people pay [more] attention to these [simultaneously staged] competitions and then the cezve/ibrik stays on the sidelines.”

As to how she felt after Rajendram was declared winner, “I am very satisfied,” said CIC events manager Annemarie Tiemes. “I would love to have had a woman winning something—there’s quite a number of women competing in the ibrik competition—but in the end, it’s the best ambassador who should win, and I’m 100 percent sure that Karthik will be that ambassador.”

Half of this year’s six finalists were women, with Marina Khyuppenen ranking highest, in third place, just 4.5 points behind second. The Russian contestant owns Moscow’s Cezve Coffee, and she also, in another way, owned the iconic pot. She wore it as the gold-embroidered logo of her business on a white chef jacket, heart side, and as a pair of earrings in copper.

Sixth place’s Sara Al-Ali, a Riyadh-based barista currently running pop-up That Coffeeshop, described her Cup of Excellence-awarded coffee from Finca Los Azahares in Chiapas within a narrative of personal and timely relevance. Inspired by “Muslims around the world” observing Ramadan, Al-Ali explained, “Coffee is no longer a morning ritual, so I wanted to create a beverage that continues that state of serenity and meditation throughout the night of Ramadan.” Later asked if she, a Saudi woman who wears a headscarf, felt compelled to fulfill an ambassadorial role, she replied, “I want to represent my country, my culture, and of course my religion. Many people see me covered and think that I have limitations but, no, here I am in the competition—world competition. I’m going around and doing everything like anybody else.”

At the time of writing, WCE had no information to share about a 2018 CIC location, though hoped to do so “very soon.” This year’s edition, meanwhile, seems to have ignited an interest in seeing the ibrik’s diaspora spread beyond the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe.

Australia-bound judge Jeremy Challender, for one, could not hide his fervor. “I’m bringing it Down Under, so don’t be surprised if you see an Australian Cezve/Ibrik Championship relatively soon,” he told Sprudge, before adding, “And I’m pretty disappointed if you don’t do the same in the States.”
