Introduction: A Journey Through Faith and Doubt

Growing up in the Philippines, being part of a deeply religious culture is often more than just attending mass; it shapes how you see yourself and the world. For me, being raised in a devout Catholic household was filled with traditions: rebultos, statues of saints, stood watch over our home, their gazes unblinking and ever-present.

Like the serene Child Jesus or the Virgin Mary, they saw as each guest brought their stain on our floors. Supposedly, they can eavesdrop on our private conversations and snatch them up as they pass through telephone lines. Despite that, I had to whisper and cover my mouth as if the statues were actual people with keen eyesight and sensitive ears. 

God was watching. God was listening. He observed every action, thought, and word. This belief gave me comfort as a child, thinking that an All-Powerful Being was protecting me. But as I grew and my understanding deepened, it became a source of inner conflict, especially when my own thoughts began to diverge from what was considered “right”. It was later I realized that some of our beliefs were just self-righteous.

The Emotional Weight of Questioning Beliefs

I was taught early that questioning faith was wrong. It was a sin that could invite punishment, whether divine or parental. To my conservative, religious family members, the mere act of questioning and doubting was already blasphemy. But how could the gift of human curiosity and intellect be seen so? The expectation was clear: obey without doubt, limit desires, and strive for heavenly rewards. It was a paradox I struggled with: how could we be free if even our thoughts were monitored and judged?

Still, I tried my best to be a good Catholic boy. I didn’t want to disobey my parents. So I prayed the rosary with my grandmother and recited nightly prayers. None of these erased the unease I felt under the sense of surveillance from an Omnipotent Being. How can I be comfortable with the idea that even showering or private moments were under divine watch? I had to flush the toilet with the seat closed when taking a dump. I had to close the curtains while I hurriedly put on my underwear and shorts. This constant awareness that "even my thoughts were sins" led to self-censorship and anxiety. For a child, this burden can be suffocating.

Experiencing Religion Beyond Home

When I moved to Riyadh and later returned to the Philippines to attend a Catholic school, the teachings became more rigid. Religion transitioned from personal devotion to mandated routines, where worship was no longer an act of love but an obligation. One was not a good Catholic if one failed to meet certain criteria–power-hungry men made criteria I suspected with nothing better to do.

We were told that every blessing was solely God's doing, leaving little room for recognizing our own achievements. My questions resurfaced, intensified by seeing that faith wasn't just shared by Catholics. How could we claim to be the only true path when there were Muslims, Buddhists, and others?

The Clash Between Faith and Personal Identity

My greatest struggle came with understanding my sexuality. I was a teenager at this point. For years, I tried to deny that part of myself, feeling only guilt, fear, and isolation. Every lingering glance to any handsome boy in the class scorched me with guilt, making me recoil.

In my mind, I was not just different. I was inherently flawed, an "abomination" unworthy of God's love. This shame made every moment of teenage curiosity feel like a prelude to condemnation. While all teens face discouragement for exploring their identity, being LGBT compounded this pressure, making me believe that acceptance and safety were unreachable.

Finding Truth Beyond Religion

College opened my eyes to a world outside religious constraints: philosophy, science, art—contributions from diverse minds that religion alone couldn't offer. I began to see life beyond strict dogma, realizing that the world was far more colorful than black-and-white beliefs. I listed my grievances: how could anyone be sure of an afterlife? Why was it acceptable to judge others harshly under the guise of faith? I saw relatives who were fervent in church but quick to gossip or judge others' choices, highlighting a painful hypocrisy.

Over time, I learned that who I am and what I feel is normal, and I embraced that. The freedom to accept myself brought a sense of peace that religion had denied me.

Conclusion: Moving Forward with Understanding

This journey taught me that true morality is not defined by blind faith but by understanding, empathy, and authentic living. To anyone struggling under the weight of religious guilt, know that goodness comes from who you are, not just from attending church. Your worth isn't determined by following every rule but by finding your true self and being kind to others. We can honor traditions and our past without being trapped by them, creating a world where faith, identity, and personal truth can coexist.

Happy Father's Day: A Tribute To My Loving Dad

When I was very young about three years old, my Mom was sent to attend trainings in other countries and all over the Philippines. Basically, it was my Dad who was taking care of me then. I can also recall spending time with my Lolo and Lola in San Pablo City whenever my Dad needed to work and someone had to take care of me.

We were living at the Manzano’s Compound then when I was young. Then in 1981, my parents decided to build their own home at San Isidro Village. Due to lack of funds, my Dad was forced to work outside the country. He went to Dammam, KSA to work as I believe a Telephone Operator. Then after a year or two, he was transferred to Riyadh, KSA to work as a Computer Operator at Saudi Telecommunications Company.

I only got to see him once a year whenever he would have his vacations in the Philippines. Those were very short vacations which I neglected to enjoy.

Back in 1982, I was bullied in school. My classmates were teasing me up to the point that I had to skip classes and spend the afternoon at the waiting shed. Then someone, a Teacher perhaps, asked me what I was doing there, and I told her everything. This prompted my Mom to have me take an exam in a different school for which during the exam day, the primary bully also took the exam.

I never left my elementary school and continued my studies there. I remember those instances where in my Dad and I during his vacations would wait for my Mom to get out of the office and spend our time eating a burger at Burger Machine.

Then when I was in first year high school, my Dad was able to apply us for family visas and I was able to have short vacations in Riyadh, KSA twice a year. I remember there was this one Christmas vacation when I was there and my Dad got laid off. We stayed at my Aunt’s place then and with his savings he gave me a Swatch watch and Nike shoes as his Christmas gift for me.

Looking back, I was you could say, NOT an ideal daughter. I would have fights with him and even ran away once when we had a terrible fight. Such an ungrateful daughter, right? When this man had practically sacrificed his whole prime years away from his family just to put food on our table and fund the unfinished home we had back then.

Ama, if you are reading this now, do know that I love you with all my heart and that I’m very grateful to God that I have you as my Dad. No one could ever replace you and for me, you’re the best Dad in the whole, wide world! Thank you for the unconditional love you have shown me since I was little. You never stopped loving me even though I have been rebellious before. Although you lose your patience on me sometimes, I believe any Dad would have done the same.

You are my HERO… that one person besides Ina who I know I could ALWAYS count on. I LOVE YOU PO and Happy Father’s Day!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

Opinion: The biggest potential danger to Jordan’s King Abdullah II is himself

Perhaps there’s a real coup plot amid the rumors that have been swirling around Jordan’s King Abdullah II and his charismatic half brother Hamzeh bin Hussein. But what’s certain is that we’re watching a riveting episode in the Jordanian version of “The Crown” — in which the messy family politics common to most royal dynasties are afflicting the Hashemites.

The most worrying aspect of the Jordan flap is that Abdullah may have contracted the obsession with imagined social-media enemies that has destabilized other Middle East leaders, from Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi.

Tuesday’s order by Jordan’s public prosecutor banning the media from discussing his case seems just the latest example of Arab royalty’s social-media panic. If it continues, it could signal a transformation of Jordan’s soft but generally benign autocracy into something more sinister.

The Hashemites had seemed to have patched over their royal breach Monday in a dynastic family hug. Former crown prince Hassan, now 74 — painfully removed from succession by his brother Hussein in favor of Abdullah just weeks before Hussein’s death in 1999 — mediated a truce between the current monarch and Hamzeh, who was in line for the throne until Abdullah sacked him as crown prince in 2004 and installed his own son.

Hamzeh pledged allegiance in a dutifully respectful letter signed Monday: “The interests of the homeland must remain above all else, and we must all stand behind his majesty the king and his efforts to protect Jordan and its national interests.” But social media posts by his supporters continued, along with a leaked audio of Hamzeh on Saturday dismissing an emissary from the palace, and the king evidently got the jitters.

Amman could compete with Hamlet’s Elsinore Castle or Cesare Borgia’s Rome as a center of intrigue. The palace is surrounded by conniving courtiers, ambitious princes and princesses, needy tribal chiefs, meddling neighbors — and wily intelligence chiefs spinning gossip about coup plots, real and fanciful. The king never has enough money for all the family coffers, so corruption in high places is an inevitable fact of life.

Abdullah has been king for 22 years, but the palaces that dot the hills of Amman are haunted, still, by memories of the late King Hussein, his charismatic father. Hussein gave his own memoir the Shakespearean title, “Uneasy Lies the Head” (that wears the crown). In a story about him 40 years ago for the Wall Street Journal, I counted nearly a dozen coup and assassination plots. Conspiracy talk is ceaseless in Amman, but sometimes it’s real.

Hamzeh seems to threaten Abdullah partly because he looks and sounds so much like their late father. Hamzeh compounded this anxiety over the past year by reaching out to the Bedouin tribes that bolster Jordan’s military and intelligence services — and by maintaining a visible social media presence. That culminated in an abrupt visit Saturday from Maj. Gen. Youssef al-Huneiti, the chief of the Jordanian military, who ordered Hamzeh to keep quiet, which friends say only rankled him more.

What set the gossip buzzing was the string of prominent people arrested at the same time Hamzeh was visited by the military chief. The list included two members of the powerful Majali tribe, a former head of the royal court and a well-connected businessman-fixer with close ties to Saudi Arabia’s crown prince. Several well-placed Jordanians told me they doubted that this amounted to a real firestorm of sedition against Abdullah, but it certainly provided some smoke.

Another wild card: Jordan’s current intelligence chief, Ahmed Husni (like all his predecessors known by the Ottoman honorific, “Pasha”), is a Circassian who has served in the post less than two years. Some Jordanians contrast his tough demeanor with the gentle style of his predecessor, Adnan al-Jundi. The new pasha is loyal to Abdullah, perhaps to a fault.

Monarchies present an image of stability, but it often masks deep anxieties. The House of Saud, for example, has always had a brotherly rivalry with the Hashemites in Jordan, because of Riyadh’s fear that Muslims might view the Hashemites, who as descendants of the prophet Muhammad ruled Mecca and Medina for centuries, as the true guardians of the Holy Places.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is perhaps the best example of a reform-minded royal who subverted his dreams for his kingdom by listening to courtiers’ talk of alleged plots against him on social media — by Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi, among others. Uneasy lies the head . . .

Whatever conspiratorial talk may be buzzing around Amman now, the biggest potential danger to Abdullah is himself — if he listens to voices telling him to muzzle dissent, crush potential rivals and wreck the foundations of modern Jordan’s stability. Only a very unwise monarch would choose that course.

The room isn’t exactly as he left it. Clint isn’t surprised, given that it’s been five years. Someone’s been through and picked everything up off the floor, neatened the shelves, even the long-forgotten clothes in the hamper have been laundered and put away. There’s only been one person at the facility for years now, so it’s not much of a stretch to guess that Natasha is the one who’s been in here. The thought twists his chest, and out of sheer instinct he shoves that emotion down, works it into a cold knot of anger. Then he stops. He doesn’t have to do that here. Not here, and not with her.

He showers, and gets into bed. After five years of sleeping rough most nights, it’s a pleasant feeling to be somewhere he knows he’s safe, and to be able to lie here without planning his next assassination. Without those processes, though, his mind drifts, and after an hour of tossing and turning Clint gives up on sleep and sits up in bed.

He flicks on the lamp, and reaches out to open the drawer in his nightstand. He has a vague recollection of a novel he was reading all those years ago. Maybe it’s still here. He grasps something book-shaped, and pulls it out of the drawer. It’s not a novel. It’s a notebook, and there’s a pen clipped to the cover. Clint blinks, trying to remember if this is his. He opens the cover.

The first page is a list of names, with his right at the top. Several are crossed out, some are circled. His own name is circled heavily and followed by three question marks. As he reads down the list, he realises that this is Natasha’s handwriting, and it’s a list of the dead. He turns the page, and the list goes on. It takes up the first eight pages of the notebook, front and back. She must have written this in the first days of the Snap, Clint realises. He imagines what it must have been like - writing out a list of all the important people in her life, and finding out one by one that they were gone. Each page of the list makes his heart sink further. He flips to the page after the list.

He looks up. Natasha is standing in his doorway, frozen at the sight of the notebook in his hands. He sets it down on the nightstand, and gets out of bed.

“Don’t worry about it,” she says, but her voice wavers for a moment. Clint crosses the distance between them like it was never there at all, and wraps her in his arms. She doesn’t hesitate, and hugs him back as tightly as she’s wanted to for five years. It’s not over yet, and they have so much left to do, but just for a moment, everything is alright again.

“I’m sorry,” he says.

“It doesn’t matter now,” she tells him, finally pulling away enough to breathe. “We can talk about this after we’ve done what we have to do. Just… get some sleep, okay? We’ve got work to do in the morning.”

She goes to his nightstand and takes the notebook, then she leaves him alone in his room. She’s right. Tomorrow they will attempt what no human has ever done before, and if they succeed, well- Clint doesn’t want to think about that just yet. Hope is not a feeling he’s felt in a long time. He settles down to sleep. Nothing can go wrong tomorrow, not as long as Natasha is by his side.
