Reflection on UKZN's Occupational Therapy Curriculum
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) offers Bachelor of Occupational Therapy program which is designed to give students skills and knowledge to practice occupational therapy in different places including community and primary health care levels (PHC).
The curriculum extends over four years of full-time study with all modules being compulsory. This helps students to be exposed to all areas of occupational therapy. The curriculum also includes the practical experience. This experience helps students to prepare for real-world practice after they become professional healthcare workers. UKZN OT curriculum teaches students to be holistic.
At UKZN OT students get exposed to PHC and community-based practice during their final year of studying (Naidoo. et al. 2019). During the first year of study, students do community studies in the second semester. This is a basic foundation of what they should expect in community settings when they finally work there. The lack of continuity of community-based studies at the UKZN OT curriculum for a second and third year makes it challenging for students to track the progression of applying knowledge and skills.
According to Rensburg (2021), South Africa has a two-tiered, highly unequal healthcare system. Only 17 in 100 South Africans have medical insurance, while 82 out of 100 largely depend on public healthcare, see https://www.statssa.gov.za/?p=10548 for more information. This means a large number of people cannot access hospital care. UKZN OT curriculum should be using this platform to help address these health inequalities as early second year of study. Allowing students to be in community can align their learning and training with the country’s health system.
According to Naidoo and Van Wyk (2016), PHC promotes a holistic approach to health care, which is what OT is about. It helps students to consider the whole person, including physical, psychological, and social needs. This helps OT students to experience community engagement and understand social determinants of health. Washington University's Occupational Therapy Degree program uses the curriculum model to explain why community-based practice is important. https://www.ot.wustl.edu/education-104#site-search-dropdown
Naidoo and Joubert (2017) wrote about to main things in their study, challenges faced by disabled community and appropriate opportunities for intervention in PHC by occupational therapists. the community faced social and physical inaccessibility challenges, including physical and sexual abuse, discrimination and marginalisation. The focus of UKZN OT curriculum on PHC and community based-practice in first and fourth year is a good thing because it provide students with understanding the difficulties faced by these communities and helps to develop appropriate intervention.
UKZN occupational therapy staff has postgraduate degrees which serve as assurance that students are learning from experienced professionals in the field. Exposure to fieldwork practice from second-year study is good because it helps students to have a clear understanding of what OT is from the early phase.
Although the UKZN occupational therapy curriculum is the best in training students to face real work, I feel as if they could close the gap between first and fourth community studies, they must integrate it throughout the curriculum. This is because community-based practice is where you find your feet as an occupational therapist, the beauty of our profession because most health professionals wait for patients to come to them, but in community-based practice, you go to people, see their living conditions, and with scarce resources and still make an impact.

As a graduate student in the U.K., Li will pursue the MASt degree in pure mathematics at Cambridge University, followed by the MSc in mathematics and foundations of computer science at Oxford University. Li aspires to become a professor of mathematics.
Li has written 10 math research articles, primarily in combinatorics, but also including discrete geometry, probability, and harmonic analysis. Since his first-year fall, he has worked with Adjunct Professor Henry Cohn in the MIT Department of Mathematics and has authored two papers based on this work.
Li works on sphere-packing and coding theory, a famously challenging mathematical problem that has applications in error-correcting codes, which are ubiquitously used in the digital age to protect against data corruption. He currently also works with Professor Nike Sun in the MIT math department on probability theory and Professor Jim Propp of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell on enumerative combinatorics and statistical mechanics.
Li has worked as a course designer and teaching assistant for Professor Jim Orlin of the MIT Sloan School of Management and Professor Muhamet Yildiz in the Department of Economics, and is currently head teaching assistant for class 6.7900 (Machine Learning). Li received the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and a Morgan Prize Honorable Mention for his undergraduate research. In his free time, he enjoys watching movies and playing strategy games with friends.

More Indian Students Choose UK With Post-Study Work Visa
The number of Indians that migrate abroad is increasing day by day!
Among the countries abroad, the UK stands as a top choice for many students and freshers. Over 98,000 Indian students were reported moving to the UK in 2022, which was a 90% increase from the 2021 figures.
The UK is believed to be the best place in the whole world to study, work or build a life. We can owe this to the near-perfect educational and health care systems offered by the UK to its residents and immigrants alike.
The number of Indians migrating to the UK proves that it is one of the popular places for Indians to set up a career after their studies.
Through UK visa agencies, aspiring candidates can apply for post-study work visas and find jobs that suit their skill set.
Reasons to choose the UK for work
As a destination for international students from all over the world, the UK is diverse in its culture and community. The welcoming community has attracted a lot of Indian students to migrate to the country in search of jobs and career opportunities. Among the many reasons Indian students are opting for the UK as the ultimate destination post-study are, a few of them are given below.
1. Post-study work experience:
The Graduate Route, also known as GR, is a UK initiative that was started in 2021 and enables Indian students to immigrate to the UK as soon as they have completed their education. They can receive world-class facilities and good work experience outside of their native country fresh out of college.
Rules of GR simply state that any international student with a bachelor's degree or higher can seek employment in the UK for almost 2 years. This post-study UK work visa helps fresher’s gain experience and get placed in reputed institutions in and out of the UK.
The GR launch has also enabled Indian students to not wait years to gain experience in beginning their careers professionally. Along with employment, it helps them to become more refined in their professional career.
2. Health and safety:
Universities and institutions in the UK provide healthcare plans to their students, both domestic and international. These treatment plans ensure every immigrant has access to good quality treatment and a safe environment while they are in the UK. The employment opportunities are no different in this regard. They focus on giving a holistic environment with physical, mental, and social health to tackle any issue the immigrants may face.
3. World-class education
The UK is home to some of the world's top universities and companies. Every student enrolled is guaranteed to receive well-rounded coaching with a focus on real-life exposure and skills. The faculties and infrastructure provided are unparalleled in quality, paving for candidates to polish their skills to become better every day.
The institutions also give international exposure to enhance their skill set. Students who recently graduated with no real-life exposure can benefit a great deal from employment and a UK visa agency can help them out.
4. Stand out among a crowd
The degrees and experience certificates offered by the UK are valid worldwide. In a future interview, these certificates will give an edge to the candidate and help secure a better job with impressive packages than their classmates.
What to do with a UK post-study work visa?
If you are wondering how to proceed after securing a post-study work visa to the UK, it is better to get your facts right from a UK visa agency. The GR initiative has led to an increase in the number of international students choosing the UK for their higher education and work.
A student with a graduate degree can apply for a UK job visa and stay for almost two years in the country to find job prospects. Doctoral candidates get the duration of three years.
Being an appealing study option for students across the globe, the UK helps aspiring students to study and work in the country. Since getting a job soon after graduation is difficult for a major portion of the students, a post-study work visa is proving beneficial.
To know more about the implications of the visa, getting in touch with UK visa consultants would be the best course of action.
Eligibility for a post-study work visa
A few factors, that decide the eligibility for a post-study work visa such as
The applicant must be in the UK at the time of applying
The applicant needs to have a student visa or general tier 4 visa
The applicant must have completed any degree course from a recognized university in the UK
The course must be completed fully in the required time. If the course is for 24 months, the study period must be the same, not less.
When should you apply for a post-study job visa?
The post-study work visa is applied before the expiry of a candidate’s student visa. The course must be completed, and the institution must acknowledge the same for successful application and approval.
The visa can be applied for online with the submission of all relevant documents proving that they completed the course. The online process for a graduate visa in the UK involves an application fee and a healthcare charge.
The degree certificate is not a mandatory document to have while applying, as many institutions provide the certificates later. A student can stay in the UK during the approval period, which might take as long as 8 weeks.

Kaushik Pandey-Archer-Rising Sports Star of India-IISM Mumbai
In June 2021, when the world was slowly recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, my family and I visited a trekking site. There, I stumbled upon a stall that had a bow and arrow. The idea was to hit the bullseye and win prizes.
Being a big fan of the DC Universe character "Arrow," I was immediately drawn to the idea of shooting an arrow myself. As I aimed and released the arrow, I felt an unparalleled rush of adrenaline. The experience left me craving for more.
As soon as I came back from the trip, I looked up where I could practise archery in Mumbai and came across Poisar Gymkhana. I immediately registered and have been regularly practising at the gymkhana ever since.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would compete in formal matches while practising, but not only did I participate, but I also won a few medals. The sensation of shooting an arrow calms my nerves and is one of the best feelings I've ever had.
As I pursue my Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, I am thrilled about continuing this journey and honing my archery skills.
Studying sports management at IISM has given me a greater grasp of how to look at archery from a management and operations standpoint, which has further fueled my love for the game.
I hope to continue feeling the exhilaration of shooting an arrow as I progress in my archery journey and professional career.

On Labels
It's intriguing how someone can readily make an assumption about yourself, even with the smallest hints possible.
I was in my quarantine hotel as part of the UK immigration procedure, when I met these new people during the exercise break. As any other normal people, we introduce ourselves and try to get to know each other. We talked about where we studied, where we worked and what we do for a living (funny how basic conversations always lead up to where you gain your capital from). Of course when the question about place of study come up, people was always fascinated to hear that I studied abroad since bachelor degree.
"Oh so you already stayed in Europe since your bachelor degree?" "Yes" "Which scholarship did you get?" "Ah, no I luckily had my parents paid for me" "Oh...okay"
Then there is an abrupt change in tone as if the conversation is not interesting anymore. That I am just another spoiled brat who got everything she needs on a silver platter, so it might be best not to be friends with someone so spoiled. Little did they know that my parents gave up most of their savings for their daughter's education, and I made a promise to pay it back. Not financially, but figuratively speaking.
Then I go on telling a story about how I tried to make ends meet by doing various side jobs, including giving piano lessons for children. I don't know why I said this but perhaps I feel the need to clarify myself.
"Yes, I usually teach piano lessons to children in my free time. But I am not a professional piano teacher though. No license, just trying to utilize what I can do to get some side income."
"Oh, so you teach Do Re Mi kind of stuff?"
I never think of myself teaching children piano lessons as "Do Re Mi" since I find it degrading and diminishing my own interest in piano. Besides, that's not the point. However at the same time it felt too much trouble for me to explain what it really was, so I just let it pass.
"Ah, yes, you might say so", I said casually.
Then there she goes with another topic. Again, an abrupt change of tone from being interested to a "fairly ok" label on my forehead. As if your first meeting with other people is your only chance to hand out free labels.
Strange, I felt this kind of feeling before. A feeling that you are given a chance to prove yourself but once you fail to reach the threshold, you're immediately out. This happens in something as superficial as a casual conversation in a hotel rooftop.
I genuinely don't think it's wrong for people to give labels on the first encounter with other human being. After all, it's a basic mode of survival. You have to know who to trust and not, who can be of great help when in need and who's not. It also simplifies our way of thinking, our brain likes simple things. The easier it is to get into conclusion, the more favorable it is for our brain to choose that option. But I also must say that not every label have pleasant implications.
On the contrary it's also possible that these labels are just my perceived, imaginary concept that only occur in my mind. Maybe people never really give these labels at all. Maybe it was just my coping mechanism to put accountability on other people when in fact it was myself that I need to deal with. Maybe.
Who knows.

Article: Chisako Oga Is Soaring to New Heights at Boston Ballet
Date: May 6, 2021
By: Karen Campbell
Chisako Oga is a dancer on the move—in more ways than one. From childhood training in Texas, California and Japan to a San Francisco Ballet apprenticeship to her first professional post with Cincinnati Ballet, where she quickly rose to principal dancer, she has rarely stood still for long.
But now the 24-year-old ballerina is right where she wants to be, as one of the most promising soloists at Boston Ballet. In 2019, Oga left her principal contract to join the company as a second soloist, rising to soloist the following year. "I knew I would have to take a step down to join a company of a different caliber, and Boston Ballet is one of the best companies in the country," she says. "The repertoire—Kylián, Forysthe, all the full-length ballets—is so appealing to me."
And the company has offered her major opportunities from the start. She danced the title role in Giselle in her very first performances with Boston Ballet, transforming a playful innocent into a woman haunted by betrayal with dramatic conviction and technical aplomb. But she also is making her mark in contemporary work. The last ballet she performed onstage before the pandemic hit was William Forsythe's demanding In the middle, somewhat elevated, which she says was a dream to perform. "The style really clicked, felt really comfortable. Bill drew something new out of me every rehearsal. As hard as it was, it was so much fun."
"Chisako is a very natural mover, pliable and strong," says artistic director Mikko Nissinen. "Dancing seems to come very easy for her. Not many have that quality. She's like a diamond—I'm curious to see how much we can polish that talent."
A Life-Changing Opportunity
Oga began dancing at the age of 3. Born in Dallas, she and her family moved around to follow her father's job in IT. Before settling in Carlsbad, California, they landed in Japan for several years, where Oga began to take ballet very seriously. "I like the simplicity of ballet, the structure and the clear vocabulary," she says. "Dances that portray a story or have a message really drew me in. One of my favorite parts of a story ballet is diving into the role and becoming the character, putting it in my perspective."
In California, Oga studied with Victor and Tatiana Kasatsky and Maxim Tchernychev. Her teachers encouraged her to enter competitions, which she says broadened her outlook and fed her love of performing in front of an audience. Though highly motivated, she says she came to realize that winning medals wasn't everything. "Honestly, I feel like the times I got close and didn't place gave me perspective, made me realize being a dancer doesn't define you and helped me become the person and the dancer I am today."
At 15, Oga was a semifinalist at the Prix de Lausanne, resulting in a "life-changing" scholarship to the San Francisco Ballet School. There she trained with two of her most influential teachers, Tina LeBlanc and Patrick Armand. "She came in straightaway with strong basics," Armand recalls, "and working with her for two years, I realized how clever she is. She's super-smart, thoughtful, driven, always working."
She became a company apprentice in 2016. Then came the disappointing news—she was let go a few months later. Pushing 5' 2", she was simply too short for the company's needs, she was told. "It was really, really hard," says Oga. "I felt like I was on a good track, so to be let go was very shocking, especially since my height was not something I could improve or change."
Moving On and Up
Ironically, Oga's height proved an advantage in auditioning for Cincinnati Ballet, which was looking for a talented partner for some of their shorter men. She joined the company in 2016, was quickly promoted to soloist, and became a principal dancer for the 2017–18 season, garnering major roles like Swanilda and Juliet during her three years with the company. "There were times I felt insignificant and insecure, like I don't deserve this," Oga says about these early opportunities. "But I was mostly thrilled to be put in those shoes."
She was also thriving in contemporary work, like choreographer-in-residence Jennifer Archibald's MYOHO. Archibald cites her warmth, playfulness and sensitivity, adding, "There's also a powerful presence about her, and I was amazed at how fast she was at picking up choreography, able to find the transitions quickly. She's definitely a special talent. Boston Ballet will give her more exposure on a national level."
That was Oga's plan. She knew going in that Cincinnati was more stepping-stone than final destination. She had her sights on a bigger company with a broader repertoire, and Boston Ballet seemed ideal.
As she continues to spread her wings at the company, Oga has developed a seemingly effortless artistic partnership with one of Boston Ballet's most dynamic male principals, Derek Dunn, who Oga calls "a kind-hearted, open person, so supportive when I've been hard on myself. He's taught me to believe in myself and trust that I'm capable of doing whatever the choreography needs." The two have developed an easy bond in the studio she likens to "a good conversation, back and forth."
Dunn agrees. "I knew the first time we danced together we had a special connection," he says. "She really takes on the artistic side of a role, which makes the connection really strong when we're dancing onstage. It's like being in a different world."
He adds, "She came into the company and a lot was thrown at her, which could have been daunting. She handled it with such grace and confidence."
Perspective in a Pandemic
The pair were heading into Boston Ballet's busy spring season when the pandemic hit. "It was really a bummer," Oga says. "I was really looking forward to Swan Lake, Bella Figura, some new world premieres. When we found out the whole season was canceled, it was hard news to take in."
But she quickly determined to make the most of her time out of the studio and physically rest her body. "All the performances take a toll. Of course, I did stretches and exercised, but we never give ourselves enough time to rest as dancers."
She also resumed college courses toward a second career. Oga is one of many Boston Ballet dancers taking advantage of a special partnership with Northeastern University to help them earn bachelor's degrees. Focusing on finance and accounting, Oga upped her classes in economics, algebra, business and marketing. She also joined Boston Ballet's Color Our Future Mentoring Program to raise awareness and support diversity, equity and inclusion. "I am trying to have my voice inspire the next generation," she says.
One pandemic silver lining has been spending more time with her husband, Grand Rapids Ballet dancer James Cunningham. The two met at Cincinnati Ballet, dancing together in Adam Hougland's Cut to the Chase just after Oga's arrival, and got married shortly before her move to Boston. Cunningham took a position in Grand Rapids, so they've been navigating a long-distance marriage ever since. They spend a lot of time texting and on FaceTime, connecting in person during layoffs. "It's really hard," Oga admits, but adds, "We are both very passionate about the art form, so it's easy to support each other's goals."
Oga's best advice for young dancers? "Don't take any moment for granted," she says without hesitation. "It doesn't matter what rank you are, just do everything to the fullest—people will see the hard work you put in. Don't settle for anything less. Knowing [yourself] is also very important, not holding yourself to another's standards. No two paths are going to be the same."
And for the foreseeable future, Oga's path is to live life to the fullest, inside and outside ballet. "The pandemic put things in perspective. Dancing is my passion. I want to do it as long as I can, but it's only one portion of my life. I truly believe a healthy balance between social and work life is good for your mental health and helps me be a better dancer."
