Haussmann’s Paris
Tumblr media
Georges-Eugène Haussmann (1809-1891), was a French official chosen by Emperor Napoleon III to renovate and renew a large portion of central Paris to make it more au goût du jour.
The first project was to improve the sanitation, water supply and traffic circulation of Paris. As the population of the City of Light had doubled, the improvements included a redivision of the map to include eight more arrondissements, or districts, and new sewers were installed. Two new railway stations, a produce market, a hospital and the Paris opera were built, and four more parks were created. Old buildings have been destroyed to be replaced by a specific style of neoclassical architecture, all the same height and faced with cream-coloured stone, to create a uniform look on Paris boulevards. He has treated buildings not as independent, but as pieces of a unified landscape. This style of architecture became known as the Haussmann style.
The ground floor is usually by businesses, as is often the mezzanine. The second, third and fourth floor are residential units, and the fifth floor features a single, continuous balcony. The mansard roof, angled at 45° was occupied by lower-income tenants and concierges.
Outside, stone paved carriage entrances that connect to a courtyard were used as entrances by the nobility to enter with their horse-drawn carriages.
The chimneys that were originally used for heating now symbolize the iconic rooftops of Paris in movies. Also note that the tiny balconies offer some of the best views of Paris.
The interiors typically feature herringbone and chevron parquet floors, elaborate plaster moldings, tall windows, built-in wardrobes and bookshelves, marble fireplaces, and French doors. It is  the quintessential Parisian-style apartment.
How to replicate this typical Parisian neoclassical style
If you ever desire to add a little bit of Haussmannian charm to your own apartment, consider investing in a golden framed mirror. It is usually placed above the marble fireplace, but you could choose a full-length mirror for your dressing area in your bedroom. Also, add golden candlesticks or ceiling lights to match. Most walls are usually white, which can make things a tad easier for renting tenants with restrictions from their owners.
If your budget allows, introduce an ornamented marble fireplace to your living room, as well as elaborate plaster moldings, and warm wood floorings. It gives european flair to the room, and increases the potential value of the property on the real estate market. Match the marble fireplace with a porcelain vase with your favourite flowers for a romantic flair.

Exploring Ghana: A Comprehensive Guide for Travelers
Ghana, the West African gem, has captivated the hearts of travelers from around the world with its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality. Whether you're planning a business trip, a family vacation, or a solo adventure, there are a few key things to know before embarking on your Ghanaian journey. In this comprehensive guide, we'll dive into the essential information to ensure your trip to Ghana is both memorable and seamless.
Visa and Entry Requirements
One of the first and most important steps in planning your trip to Ghana is securing the appropriate visa. Ghana offers several visa options, including tourist visas, business visas, and e-visas. The application process can vary depending on your nationality, so it's crucial to research the requirements well in advance. Additionally, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the dates of your planned trip.
Currency and Exchange Rates
The official currency in Ghana is the Ghanaian cedi (GHS). It's advisable to have a mix of cash and debit/credit cards for your expenses. Major credit cards are widely accepted in larger cities and tourist areas, but it's always a good idea to have some local currency on hand for smaller transactions and cash-only situations. Be sure to check the current exchange rate before your trip to budget accordingly.
Accommodations and Transportation
Ghana offers a diverse range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels. Consider your travel plans and budget to choose the best fit. When it comes to transportation, Ghana has a well-developed network of buses, taxis, and domestic flights. For longer distances, the intercity bus system is a popular and affordable option. Taxis are readily available in major cities, and Uber has also gained a presence in Ghana's urban areas.
Climate and Attire
Ghana enjoys a tropical climate, with generally warm and humid weather throughout the year. The coastal regions tend to be slightly cooler, while the northern parts of the country can be hotter and drier. It's essential to pack lightweight, breathable clothing that can withstand the warm temperatures. Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings, and don't forget sun protection, such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Cultural Etiquette and Traditions
Ghana is a culturally rich and diverse nation, and it's important to be mindful of local customs and traditions. Greet people with a warm smile and a handshake, and be respectful when visiting religious sites or attending cultural events. Avoid public displays of affection, and dress modestly, especially in more conservative areas.
Safety and Health Considerations
Ghana is generally a safe destination for travelers, but it's always wise to take precautions. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas, and be cautious when withdrawing cash or using your electronic devices in public. Regarding health, it's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional about necessary vaccinations and preventative measures, such as malaria prophylaxis.

Top Attractions and Activities
Ghana offers a wealth of incredible experiences for visitors. Some must-visit attractions include the vibrant capital city of Accra, the historical Cape Coast Castle, the tranquil Volta Region, Mole National Park and the stunning Kakum National Park. Immerse yourself in the local culture by attending a traditional drumming and dance performance, exploring the bustling markets, or participating in a cooking class.

Sustainable and Responsible Travel
As a responsible traveler, it's important to be mindful of your impact on the environment and local communities. Support eco-tourism initiatives, patronize locally-owned businesses, and engage in ethical and sustainable practices throughout your trip. This not only enriches your experience but also contributes to the long-term well-being of Ghana.
By keeping these key considerations in mind, you'll be well-equipped to plan an unforgettable and enriching trip to Ghana. Embrace the country's vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality, and create lasting memories that will inspire you to return again and again.

When things link up …..
While I was recently working on a home deco project. I was greatly looking forward to reaching the stage when I could take a trip to a large hobby store. To seek out something attractive to house some empty bottles I wanted to display.
This trip was going to take place when the project was complete, other than adding the display bottles. Also I was greatly looking forward to doing some hobby art projects, once I completed the home deco project. I didn’t want to go to the hobby store and get distracted before near completion.
As I was coming close to the end of the project, storm Ashley arrived. She caused some minor, yet urgent, work that needed attending to. This minor disruption brought about some very fortunate luck, by way of finding an excellent work man. Who repaired the urgent work, did another task that until then proved difficult to find the right person to carry out. He also added a finishing touch to the home deco project, I wasn’t expecting to get done until further down the line.
Although I wasn’t completely finished with the project. I did take the trip to the hobby store, I found the perfect items to house the bottles and goes without saying, came away with some lovely artwork pieces to work on.
During the summer months of 2024, I really enjoyed picking up iced coffees from the supermarket fridge. I found I couldn’t part with a selection of the bottles, as I rightly thought, they would make a lovely display.
The yellow “open happiness” bottle was a special anniversary edition, at one of my favourite London stores, some years back. Which I’ve kept all those years and have now found a perfect spot for.
Now onto the South African empty wine bottles, which have been with me now for 25 years. Yes that’s right, 25 years! They came back home with me from a magnificent trip to South Africa which included a 5 day safari and trip to the wine lands.
Earlier today, Saturday 9th November 2024, I finished the Giraffe artwork, purchased at the hobby store. It’s really a card, but I mounted it inside a frame. Its multitude of cheerful colours with the light in the eye, is a wonderful constant reminder now, of those wonderful 5 days on safari in Africa. A dung beetle rolling a large ball of dung, a scorpio and then a family of giraffe’s were the first spotted on safari. Following on from the night time arrival on camp when we were greeted with a pack of wild dogs eyes illuminated in the darkness, all those years ago.
Still a tiny amount of work outstanding with the home deco project, today, the bottle displays were added. Even though this particular room is on the small side, a lot of thought and creative thinking has gone into the project. I dread to think the amount of time and thought that interior designers need to invest in their large scale projects. Yet I think, if they are not under too much pressure with a deadline, they can thoroughly enjoy the process. Adding existing pieces from their store and taking plenty of shopping trips to add other elements. Just never underestimate the amount of work involved in their work and your own personal projects.
I’m loving all the stories attached to many elements and the memories they evoke in this project, just a few touched upon here.
