The Story Behind the Portraits (A HTTYD/Riders of Berk Theory)
Hello, my fellow Furians! And welcome to another HTTYD article!
Today, we’ll be diving into the background and mystery behind the Portraits of the Chieftains and their Heirs!
This is a continuation, sequel, and expansion of my original post here.
We know very little about Berkian history aside from the fact that Berk has been around for 7 generations (8 if you include the Gang... maybe?) and that Berk celebrated their 400th Anniversary (more on that in my previous article here).
Other events and people in Berkian history that were mentioned were the Dragon Wars (for 300 years), the Berserker Wars (during Stoick’s father’s and grandfather’s time), the skirmishes with the Outcasts, the Rise of Alvin the Treacherous, even about the fame of Hamish the First. There are mentions of other noteworthy people that were part of Berk’s history (at least, I assume they’re part of Berkian history since Fishlegs mentions them), but to regale you of them when I haven’t watched the series in a while isn’t worth it.
However, there is one glaring absence among the row of portraits on the wall: there is no portrait of Hamish the Second and his son. Why?
Let us go through the events of the Riders of Berk episode “Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man” to find out, since that is where we will receive the story of Hiccup the Second.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/01982fb4b7061058a1303e611a196754/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-0f/s540x810/d8e63594655c0635115481b58ae4c6fbdd298052.jpg)
We know that Hamish the First was a famous chieftain in Berkian history, said by Fishlegs to have been: “the most successful and wealthiest chieftain in Berk’s history, who amassed a fabulous and massive treasury.”
However, there may be some conflict over who was actually Hamish the First, since according to the Wiki, the blonde Viking is NOT Hamish the First, but actually the first portrait on the wall, the dark-haired Viking, and that Hamish the Second was named after him.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/879104def2c932f39f3a7ad2397a8440/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-29/s540x810/5728b4f5b8952a20f8d8024999a84960882d5b3b.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1cf07d244b5922319ad8d47d1ea4228d/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-e7/s540x810/9ec43ae11c4e2c8f1b82a43a229e711d4f2b6474.jpg)
Of course, I’m not sure if the animation error is true or not. If Hamish the First, according to the Wiki, truly was the first chieftain to take his portrait in this, then it doesn’t make sense that Hamish the Second would put the treasury spanning from the First Chieftain into a secret place several generations later. But could it be that his (the first chieftain’s) son is really Hamish the Second?
I don’t know. It’s difficult to tell. I’ll leave that to you guys, and I’ll think about it a little more. I might even write another article about this apparent discrepancy.
While it may be a stretch, it's possible that Hamish the Second switched the portraits and that the first chieftain’s portrait was actually the portrait posing as the two Hamishes (the blonds) while the true portrait of the Hamishes was put into the First Chieftain’s portrait spot.
Anyway, back to Hamish the Second’s background.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0ff3a9a76a808dd33b32fb2124dc0eee/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-4b/s540x810/040f46136078b577ab7fe18a393b0e39d71a21c5.jpg)
After leaving behind a literal golden and colorful legacy, Hamish the First stepped down (or died), leaving Hamish the Second to succeed him as the 5th-Generation Chieftain of Berk. After that, he hid the majority of his father’s treasure hoards and created the labyrinth and riddles for the next “hiccup” to find in the future. We don’t know the later events or accomplishments of his reign — or anything else about him, for that matter — before the succession of either Stoick’s grandfather or father.
But here’s where it’s gets even more hazy.
The Case of the Missing Portraits
If you count all of the portraits in total, there are only SIX of them, including Hiccup’s portrait! We’re missing Hamish the Second’s portrait with his son.
Where is it? What happened to it? Why is it missing?!
In the intro to the HTTYD 1 film, Hiccup stated that they have lived on Berk for “seven generations,” so whether you include his own generation as the 7th generation, or if the 7th generation is Stoick’s generation while Hiccup’s generation is the 8th is its own topic altogether.
Though you could argue that only Hamish the Second's portrait is missing, since if you HAD included that, it would've been 7 generations of portraits, including Hiccup's portrait with Stoick, and, even IF Hiccup was the 8th generation instead of the 7th, there wouldn't be an 8th portrait until the coming-of-age of Hiccup's OWN children.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e51b9273946ecfc57d9eeb27debacf44/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-5f/s540x810/2678eac077239a1baff513462088e0448d3b9c4e.jpg)
We get an interesting hint by Fishlegs as they observe the line of portraits:
So according to him, Hiccup is one of the “few” who wasn’t killed by their successors — which usually implies that regicide was somewhat commonplace. Of course, “few” could just imply more than 3-4 individuals, and it’s possible that only a few in their history were actually killed by their successor.
Another theory is that Fishlegs is talking about successors and predecessors in general throughout the Archipelago in all of Viking history.
It’s not really stated what “the elite few” is referencing, whether it’s concerning the Berkian chieftain bloodline, or is including the chieftain bloodlines of other Tribes as well.
What do you guys think?
At any rate, let’s start with Hamish the Second.
Hamish the Second
Hamish the Second is definitely a curious individual in Berkian history, shown to be a nod to Grimbeard the Ghastly's son, Hiccup the Second, in the Books. Both are friends to dragons, both were Runts, both loved their fathers despite their grievances, and both their fathers were successful pirates who collecting a massive hoard of treasures.
Since after his father's death, Hamish the Second, being a brilliant engineer and nasty trapper and riddler, used his (presumedly) secret relationship with dragons to build a massive complex to hide his father's treasure (most likely due to the infighting over the said treasure, as was seen in HTTYD Book 2) and protect it from thieves and raiders.
That was his first job and project as the 5th(?) Chieftain of Berk.
So, if Hamish II became the next Chief, what happened to him and why isn't there a portrait of himself with his own son?
Well, we simply don't know, unfortunately. There are some theories and plausibilities that could explain its disappearance.
1. Hamish, much like his Book counterpart, perished at a young age — most likely as the victim of what Fishlegs mentioned as "being one of those killed by their successor."
2. Hamish could've died as a result of an accident, disease, injuries, battle, or even a shipwreck or a storm.
3. Hamish's secret of befriending dragons could've been discovered and was either killed or exiled for "betraying Berk". (Of course, this is assuming that Berk hadn't tamed dragons back then since Hamish the First obviously had time to raid and pillage to get this massive hoard of treasure without much problems with dragon raids. And the flashback with Stoick and Hiccup in HTTYD 2 and HTTYD 3 seem to support that.)
4. Hamish could've been killed or forced to leave due to people seeking his father's treasure.
5. Hamish could've had a son but, like Thugheart from the Books, decided to overthrow Hamish II and got rid of him.
6. Hamish, not wanting to endanger his dragon friends, pulled a Valka-move and either made it look like dragons killed him, or, like what Hiccup tried to do in HTTYD 1, decided to quietly leave Berk without telling anyone.
There might be more, but those are the main ones.
Heck, perhaps even one of these two portraits IS Hamish the Second and his son, presumedly Stoick's grandfather. Who knows? 🤷♂️
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/26b34b736cddb0caa17de2dfcd8741e4/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-24/s540x810/9254500c4c2c7e882bc170445eb1194237213429.jpg)
At any rate, for any or a combination of these reasons, this resulted in a tragic early death before having an heir, or he did have an heir but died before his son came of-age, thus the portrait couldn't be made.
Considering Hamish the Second is based off of Hiccup the Second from the Books, let's just assume the chieftainship was left vacant after his disappearance, for whatever reason it may be.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b12662f347739256c3dec113fdc94441/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-78/s540x810/667bff6f985621933b3ac66a92ec3fd886677413.jpg)
Of course, if this is true, does this simply mean that the portraits got switched? If so, then we can continue with the theory that a relative of Hamish the Second, Stoick's grandfather or father, became the new Chief of Berk — assuming there wasn't an upstart before that who tried to take advantage and take the throne for himself.
This would effectively make Stoick's family a new dynasty, even if they're part of the same family. Assuming that they're not just a family of Vikings that the residents voted in and that the official line of Berk ended with Hamish the Second.
If it's TRUE that the Hamishes WERE, in fact, the FIRST and SECOND Chiefs of Berk, then that would change things a bit.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f30f7fcb8e65fdff893e15fa749eb7cc/59fb88b9cd1daeaa-95/s540x810/697fde4fde694f7f605dc75807c455e6fc84d82a.jpg)
For instance, if we were to be loyal to the Books, after the deaths of Grimbeard and Hiccup the Second, and the disownment and exile of Thugheart, Chucklehead would become the new Chieftain of Berk.
Meaning that after Hamish the First's death, and Hamish the Second's early death/disappearance, Chucklehead would be the next Chieftain of Berk.
And if you look at the portraits, the one on the right looks like what Chucklehead would look like, doesn't he? 👀
Conclusion
To conclude with this rather long article, regardless of Hamish the Second's fate, or what timeline he truly hails from, he left a seat vacant, and the absence of his theoretical portrait of himself and his heir is likely due to his early death or disappearance, or, if he HAD an heir, or contenders, they might've dealt with him and got rid of the portrait.
The only reason why I didn't mention the possibility of his secret — that of his friendship with dragons — being found out, and that's what caused his downfall, is that if that had been the case, then why didn't they destroy the portrait of Hamish the First and Hamish the Second as well?
If the Hamishes were the First- and Second-Generation Chieftains, then the next chieftain would've been [insert Viking] (I'm going with "Chucklehead").
If not, and it was during Stoick's grandfather's or father's time, then it's possible that Stoick's grandfather and father were part of the continuation of the dynasty left vacant by Hamish the Second. Assuming they're not a new dynasty altogether, which is unlikely.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this article. If you have any thoughts about this mystery, or about Berkian history, please feel free to give your thoughts.
Thank you for reading. I hope you have a good weekend.
Long Live the Night!

boy; girl; dragon
Hiccup only needs two things. He knows he can rely on both forever.
masterlist
There is a boy, and he has a girl. And also a dragon.
The order matters. He had the girl first, even if he didn’t know it yet. She didn’t say a word to him about the feeling beating against the bars of her ribs like a dove in a cage, not until he did first. The dragon helped things along, surprisingly. Usually, fire-breathing reptiles can only complicate a situation, but when two young people are soaring through the sky with only the billowing light of the sun and stars around them to bear witness to the truths they have to tell, secrets end up not so secret anymore. Hiccup told you he loved you. You said the same.
The dragon watched, and listened, and waited. It, of course, had known the whole time. Almost everyone did. Tact is a rare occurrence among the Vikings, but the people of Berk could tell that interference in the story of you and him, him and you, would not bode well. You and Hiccup were something different, something special. You didn’t need anyone but each other. And the dragon.
Loving a Viking is dangerous. Loving Hiccup was so far along the line of adventure and risk that even your first kiss felt like throwing off your armor to embrace a knife in your chest. If this was pain, though, it was the loveliest anguish you had ever experienced in your entire life. Falling in love with Hiccup was brilliant, like dragonfire; exhilarating, like tumbling in freefall; unfailing, like the son of a chieftain knowing that he would send his entire village to keep you safe from harm or die trying. Staying in love with him was soft torchlight, quiet mornings, wispy clouds around your temples when he took you up to see the stars. Easy. Perfect. And yours, all yours.
The two of you are together now, sitting side by side on the edge of a cliff. Most of Berk is rocky with occasional splashes of slate blue or chestnut wood to break up the monotonous grey, but tenacious patches of grass have managed to crawl up to the top of the cliffside here, providing you with a threadbare emerald blanket on which you can rest your legs.
A cool wind whistles through the air, toying with your hair and clothes before plunging off the edge of the rock face. You watch it go, taking a few errant leaves with it, and consider the drop down to the sea below you.
“If I fell right now,” you say to Hiccup, “off the side, you would catch me.”
“I would catch you,” he affirms. “Dragon or no dragon.”
“What if I fell too fast and you couldn’t reach me in time?” You ask.
He takes your hand, voice soft and gentle in the early morning. You’ve heard him louder and more assertive when directing the villagers, but you like him best like this, when Hiccup’s peace is only ever meant for you. There is an entirely different young man who exists only when he’s alone with you, a Hiccup that no one will ever know as well as you do. It is a delight to keep the secret of this second, inner boy. It’s a treasure that will only ever be claimed by you, a sparkling spread of gold and jewels captive to one person and one person alone. Not even blood relations can claim that sort of glory.
“There is nowhere you could go that I would not follow,” Hiccup asserts. “Not off the cliff. Not into the sky. I would follow you past the sun, or a hundred thousand lengths in the sea. I would search the world to find you, if I had to, and I would bring you back with me. Always. Do you believe me?”
“I do,” you whisper. “Always.”
“Always,” he repeats, and presses a kiss to your temple.
This is loving Hiccup, then. Always. Always the guarantee of a heart beating in tandem with yours. Always the confidence that you will not be alone in this world of yours, even as it seems to stretch out forever, even as it looms to hide a hundred friends or a thousand enemies. If the odds are with you or against you, you will have Hiccup to guide you through the trials and tribulations of this life of yours. It is written in the stars, and it is sworn by the one you love. No promise could be greater.
The two of you will descend into legend, into myth, into folklore. Never in the world have any two people loved each other more, and never will they again. Every young pair thinks that they could have this, a love to last a lifetime, but you and Hiccup will do them one better and last a thousand more. You could love him in every universe, every incarnation of yourselves, and Hiccup has already promised to be by your side no matter who you two were. Gods, maybe. Heroes or villains. Ordinary lives or glorious ones. All of them will feature the two of you together. Always.
A shadow briefly blots out the sun overhead, a pair of jet-black wings soaring through the early morning skies. As it loops and wheels towards the two of you, its shade flickers across the trees, dappling them with night’s fury even as the sun climbs higher into the sky. It occurs to you that you’d like every day to start and end like this one, for each one of your hours to be filled with this sort of blissful joy. You don’t need riches, you don’t need a legacy. All you need is right here before you. A boy and a girl. And also a dragon.

If we’re going to assess the generational background of the gang from HTTYD, think about it…
The Haddocks: Essentially the royalty of Berk, and has a long line of chieftains. Stoick exemplifies what it means to be a Haddock—strong, tough, courageous, and physically imposing. Traditionally, the Haddocks were groomed to embody these qualities and were raised to hate and kill dragons before Hiccup shifted this perspective
The Jorgensons: Known as one of Berk’s most reputable and respected clans, the Jorgensons have a stellar reputation, particularly for excelling in tribal games. Much like the Haddocks, they are recognized for their physical power and strength. Spitelout is the epitome of what it means to be a Jorgenson, setting the standard for the clan’s image.
The Hoffersons: Renowned as skilled strategists, the Hofferson name was once a mark of respect. However, it suffered a blow due to the infamous Finn Hofferson” incident, which tarnished the family’s legacy.
The Ingermans: It’s revealed that the Ingermans have a darker history tied to dragon hunting, and as far as we know, this practice was still ongoing during the events of the franchise.
The Thorstons: Their lineage suggests they were voyagers and adventurers; probably not much for its heroism. This is supported by the fact that one of their family members is known to have traveled to the Dragons’ Edge long before the events of the series
This was until…
Hiccup and the gang came into picture and practically dismantled this whole belief system and changing it for the better by not following their ancestral patterns
Hiccup, as a Haddock, redefined the course of his lineage by uniting humans and dragons. Despite his smaller, less imposing figure compared to his ancestors, he still led his people toward a more peaceful and prosperous way of life.
Snotlout Jorgenson, raised to believe that strength was solely about domination and conquest, demonstrated that true strength also lies in serving his people and supporting his leaders. He also showed that masculinity isn’t measured by bruteness but by the compassion and loyalty he brings to those around him.
Astrid Hofferson, whose family name was once dragged down and disrespected, is now we can say is the most respected because of the hard work and determination that Astrid has done for her family. (We actually see this redemption story in an actual episode from Defenders of Berk)
Fishlegs Ingerman, once tied to a family legacy of dragon hunting, has completely broken away from that by embracing his love for dragons and redefined his family’s legacy, transforming the Ingermans into a dragon-loving clan.
Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorstons, while still as adventurous as ever, have proven to their family and the people of Berk that they are skilled dragon riders. Their courage and heroism have probably earned them a reputation, showcasing the strength and bravery that defines their family in a new light.
I love how the franchise didn’t just focus on the change from Hiccup’s perspective but also showed the impact it had on the gang and the family clans as well 🥹

Wasn't Thought Out
A/N - Fic 1 for the Hear Me Out Cake event held by the lovely @tickly-trashcan! This fic is for Astrid and Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon suggested by two different anons! I haven't written for these characters in forever, but I love them deeply. Please enjoy!
Word Count: 724
The ocean and the sky were almost matching hues of crystalline blue when Astrid stepped outside, her interest piqued by a curious noise resonating from the back of her home. A soft smile settled onto her face once she saw the perpetrator of the pitchy sound that had grabbed her attention. There in the yard, covered in a fine layer of pollen, was her boyfriend and his dragon best friend. Despite being the chieftain of Berk, the man was pinned to the ground, child-like expression of joy and good humor adorn his face as he laughed, playfully batting at the top of the dragon’s head while the Night Fury licked him furiously. Astrid stood off to the side, hands on her hips as she watched the scene unfold before her.
“Toothless!” Hiccup’s tone was higher than his normal one, pitch rising and falling between short bursts of unstifled laughter. When Hiccup was younger, back when he first encountered and befriended Toothless, he was anxious about his laugh, hiding it from the rest of the world. Toothless was the first individual he didn’t hide his face with, allowing the dragon to see his goofy smile and hear his full laugh. Astrid was next, having first witnessed it in a moment similar to this one. After Hiccup became aware of her presence and that she found his laugh adorable and charming, he became less restrained around her. Now, years later, after countless moments of mirth, many would forget how the boy would hide his joy behind his clasped hands.
Wagging his tail with great delight, Toothless switched tactics to gently paw against his rider’s belly, eliciting a cackling laugh which vastly differed from the prior squeaky laughter. Ears up and tongue lolling out the side of his mouth, Toothless radiated with a giddy aura, renunciant of a child on their birthday. The dragon must have sensed an air of negativity coming from Hiccup earlier, Astrid figured, as this was something Toothless often did with Hiccup when the young man was feeling down. Luckily for everyone, Hiccup never seemed to mind these playful attacks committed by his friend. Nor did he mind it when Astrid was struck by the same mischievousness that Toothless had been inflicted with and joined in on the fun.
“Where did you come from?” Hiccup let out a gasp as Astrid tackled him, rolling him away from Toothless. Respite from Toothless’ attack was short as Astrid made quick work of getting into a comfortable position, then resumed where Toothless left off. “He-hey! Noho fair!”
“You two having fun without me was unfair,” Astrid teased, taking her long braid in her hand to run the loose end beneath Hiccup’s chin, provoking the stream of giggles Astrid heard often before they laid down to sleep.
“This all wasn’t really thought out ahead of time,” Hiccup stated in such a way that Astrid had to laugh. Of course he had to keep stating the obvious, it was the most Hiccup thing to do at any moment, but as luck would have it, Astrid always found this quirk charming.
“Wasn’t it now?” cooing, Astrid began to dance her fingers along Hiccup’s sides, delighted by the change of his laughter’s pitch. Wriggling around beneath her, Hiccup smacked the ground repeatedly, long blades of grass caressing his fingers with each movement.
“Noho!” laugh as contagious as ever, Hiccup’s head was thrown back as Astrid laughed along with her boyfriend. “This wasn’t either though.”
Out of the blue, Hiccup’s brain managed to rewire itself into committing an act of retaliation. Reaching out quickly so Astrid could not take advantage of this new opening, Hiccup’s hands latched onto Astrid’s hips and began to knead into the sensitive spot.
“Hehey,” she yelped in surprise, though maintained her focus to keep her fingers latched onto Hiccup’s torso, her fingers migrating down to the center of his belly.
Tail wagging ferociously, Toothless smiled his typical gummy grin as he watched his best friend use all his strength to flip them both over. Before he could get her pinned, Astrid counter attacked by dragging his legs into her lap as Hiccup was on his belly. Without any way to fight it, Hiccup slipped into hysterics as Astrid dug into the back of his ribs, knowing she was not going to hold back with her revenge.

The description is down below. This is also on my Wattpad and Quotev! Enjoy!
Description: Fly High Dragon King | (You are Here) More about you: More about you Prologue: New Home From Across the Sea Chapter 1: Old Friends from the Starry Sky |TBW Chapter 2: The Chieftain's Decision | TBW Chapter 3: My Good Friend and Maybe Yours | TBW Chapter 4: Understanding This Way of Life | TBW Chapter 5: Convincing Her of Sky Bound Beauty | TBW Chapter 6: Lifelong Friends Over War | TBW Chapter 7: The Queen Faces the King | TBW
Growing up with dragons, Y/n became something like one. He didn't have wings or a tail, but he had the scales, teeth, and appetite of one. Not to mention his aging stunted. His body adapted to live with these glorious winged reptiles as he made his home in their nest. He was stuck, at the age of 2, living with these dragons for 10 years. These dragons would try to provide him some education; bringing him books from the vikings boats they had shot down. The dragons all cared for Y/n as their own, and he loved each of them dearly. All dragons knew him as the Dragon King. No dragon would defy him, not even the babies. Y/n would fly with them and would act like them. But after those 10 years, Y/n wanted to explore and figure out what made up vikings and why they would hurt the creatures he cared so much for. With the help of 2 night furies, whom he had befriended over those 10 years, they brought him to an abandoned ship and Y/n had sailed away. After a few months of sailing, his boat crashed into Berk, and he became a part of their community as he tried to understand the reason they killed those he considered family.

HTTYD Modern AU Ideas (Small Town + Cryptids)
I'm always a bit perplexed when the interpretation of modern day Hiccup is that he would be wealthy...yes his father is a chieftain, but he's the chieftain of a tiny, rugged island without luxuries, even for the ruling family. The Haddocks dress and live in the same quality of clothes/lodgings as everyone else, and Hiccup isn't treated better than his peers. In fact, I feel like him being Stoick's son only highlighted his inability to fit in during the first movie.
Anyway, there's very little status distinction going on in Berk past Stoick having more decision-making power. And pre-HTTYD 2, we don't see a large population on Berk or a focus on luxury or convenience (we can assume that this is because the period between HTTYD 1 and RTTE take place during and just after a state of constant war against the dragons.)
Keep in mind this is while there are contemporaneous cultures in the franchise (Like The Wingmaidens and the Defenders of the Wing) that make Berk look rustic and provincial in comparison. And for a real-life comparison, you can look at the wealthy kingdoms and empires that were flourishing elsewhere in the world at the same time as Europe's Viking Age/early middle ages.
Modern day Stoick to me is a community leader (frequently re-elected mayor, town manager, sheriff, etc) of a tiny middle-of-nowhere town. With the mayor option, Hiccup would certainly be well-off compared to many of his peers, but much closer to middle or upper-middle class. Apparently a mayor's salary can be dependent on how big the town/city is, so there's a good chance Stoick is making an average salary anyway. Either way, I think he would be so frugal that even if they had money, Hiccup wouldn't grow up knowing about it until his teens.
I'm thinking modern day Berk is either the Midwest (because a lot of people in the midwest have nordic ancestry and that would be a great way to represent the americanized viking vibe we get from the franchise) or the Northeast because those forests are haunted af and definitely where you'd find a downed dragon that is the offspring of lightning and death. Either way I'm putting it in the States, because the dragon riders are very clearly American teens (+1 Canadian) with a vaguely Viking aesthetic. Maybe the mascot of the local high school has something to do with Vikings (A Berserker? maybe Berk and Berserker Island are merged here so we can get the Berk Berserkers), so the town has a bit of a viking fascination.
also i think it would be fun if the dragons in the modern au were cryptids or aliens. Maybe instead of having a feud that lasted for several generations, it was more like a recent series of disturbances, which much of the town initially responds to with skepticism (like making fun of Hiccup for having a cyptid sighting and trying to catch them) and then ramps up to aggression when the cryptids/aliens make themselves unambiguously known. Bonus points if it takes place in the 80s. So not quite a modern AU I guess, but closer than the 800s.

Presenting two more characters and their redesigns in my HTTYD/The Deep story! One is more involved in the story, but the other makes PLOT, and neither really ever interact or connect to one another plot wise to my immediate knowledge in the overall story.
Introducing Savage and Eret!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a2fc9b754550233e45e4ac2c73173237/79d2e981f3e95114-92/s540x810/72cc1f216d2c01f0b1ada0f8eb9bbd6e485031d0.jpg)
Savage is not an Outcast and Alvins right hand man, but a true Berserker warrior, serving Oswald and his family for years. But when Oswald the Antagonistic becomes Oswald the Agreeable, Savage starts to grow restless. The Berserkers aren’t at war with the Berkians and surrounding tribes anymore, Oswald trying to maintain a semblance of peace in the dragon-war ridden Archipelago. Savage is a follower, not a natural born leader, but years of peace treaty after peace treaty, and babysitting Oswalds whelps has made him seek out other like-minded Berserkers, planning an uprising against the passive Chieftain. Oswald seemed to have caught on to what Savage was doing, escaping their attempted assassination, and now Savage is trying to commandeer the Berserker Tribe as a whole through sewing doubt amongst the tribe against Oswalds children, and trying to pit the siblings against one another in hopes they’ll simply get rid of the other for him. Savage isn’t good at thinking things through though, especially what the aftermath of his plans to stage a coup or civil war amongst the tribe to try and take leadership might be.
Eret son of Eret is a budding Dragon Trapper, partaking in his father’s business of trapping dragons and bringing them to Auction Markets run by the Grimborn brothers. Dragon Trapping was introduced to Erets family through his paternal Grandfather, with loans being taken from the wrong people, with no money to pay them back leading his Grandfather to Dragon Trapping. With similar habits being passed on to his son, Eret Sr, Eret has been taken on as crew for his fathers quest to pay off the debts his grandfather failed to pay, and his fathers own drunken mistakes. Eret isn’t sure how to feel about it all, his father pushing the looming mantle of Captain on to Eret as his eventual future, leaving whatever debts his father fails to pay before retirement for Eret to try and absolve, with old bedtime stories from his deceased mother and her side of the family speaking of dragons being more than wild animals. Eret’s been grappling with his internal struggles for a few years now, and a sudden interaction with some Archipelagon teenagers apparently riding dragons only rattles his inner beliefs even more.
I decided to go a bit of a different route with Savage in this story, making him a member of the Berserker tribe instead of the Outcasts. There are a lot of elements of his prior design still in this one, but he’s got a lead part in a lot of the early Berserker central arks and plots, especially in Heathers early story, and why she makes some of the decisions she does in Riders and Defenders of Berk, which has a sort of butterfly effect on the way she is in RTTE. He’s not a MAIN villain like the Grimborn brothers, Alvin, Heather, Drago, and a certain someone from the games, more of a small villain and a reoccurring nuisance. He gets his comeuppance however, as he’s not good at thinking things through, especially in the long run, and eventually gets revealed for all his nefarious schemes, and promptly exiled
Eret is a little different to the swashbuckling Dragon Trapper that’s in HTTYD 2, but he’s also nearly five years younger, a little older than Dagur and around the age that the riders were in RTTE. So, eighteen-nineteen-nearly twenty. He’s not Captain of the ship yet, and dealing with a lot of inner family struggles and trying to come to terms with what his future may hold. Generational and pawned off debt is how I play off (Headcanon wise) how he came to be under Drago’s employment in the films, and I’m playing with the setting of the early stages of how that happened here. With his grandfather and father both taking loans they couldn’t keep or pay back, and turning to Dragon Trapping to try and pay them off. Afterall, dragon parts and living dragons sell for a LOT of money. The Dragon Riders throw a bit of a wrench in things though, and Eret ends up being one of their first allies beyond Dagur and someone else in the Archipelago. He’s also a little shorter and not nearly as beefy as he is five years from then, not having the experience to build up that kind of muscle yet. I did this partly because of his age, and partly because Nico Marlets early concept art for him (whose HTTYD art I love and want tattooed to my brain) had him being a little more scrawny, and so I thought that was a nice callback
More characters to come…eventually, as it takes time to draw these, especially with the designing process I go through
#Savage isn’t the only character whose origins and general story I change#i mean i already changed Heathers a little bit#but i can think of one other character who’s a bit different than they are in the show in regards to setting#and another who is an antagonist when they weren’t in the films#i gave Eret the little beads he had in his concept art I love them so much#his mothers side of his family is going to be so much fun to dive into#they’re part of a whole arc in RTTE and Eret reuniting with that side of his family is going to be so much fun to write#the deep 2015#the deep cartoon#httyd#httyd/the deep crossover#Httyd savage#eret son of eret#there’s a few other characters im doing redesigns of appearance and plot for#aside from the characters of the deep who I have to sew into this world somehow#I’ve got Mala/Johann/eventually Drago and Valka planned#also chicken#can’t think of anyone else who would necessarily need redesigning/replotting#maybe Viggo and Ryker as they’re both five years younger#but their goals are relatively the same as they are in the show#with added plot on Viggos end and furhter exploration to their dynamic and operations#its gonna be so much fun tying everythign all together

Are the Hamishes Based on Book Characters? (HTTYD)
(Special shout-out to @yv-sketches and the link to this particular fanart here. I'll never stop looking at their book drawings, they're so good!)
Well met, my fellow Dragonmarkers! Here's another article for Character Comparison series, where I try to find a plausible, even possible, comparison between show and book characters of HTTYD.
Today, we'll be diving into the Hamishes. Very well-timed, considering what I had found recently.
Shout-out to @noctusfury and his article on the Hamishes and the Mystery of the Missing Portrait(s). Very good read.
Now, for those of you who haven't watched DreamWorks Dragons, or have forgotten who these two are, they are two of several Chieftains of Berk that is seen in the Riders of Berk episode "Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man".
The portrait below is supposed to be that of the two Hamishes.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/01982fb4b7061058a1303e611a196754/c25a3300dc99f1ba-a7/s540x810/42c9d1045b7f414f1f94aac3e7bf74740f997eea.jpg)
It must be said, of course, that there is some debate about that due to an apparent error that was made during production and that the portrait of the 1st chieftain and his son (the top left in beginning picture) was the real Hamishes, design-wise.
You'll have to read the post in the link above, since that gets into greater detail.
However, we're not here for that. We're here for who the Hamishes are and who are their closest comparison, in MY opinion.
Hamish the First was Berk's most successful and wealthiest chieftain, having been a raider and pirate and accumulated for himself a massive hoard of treasure. We can assume that his rule was a successful one based on the only description we have of this historic figure.
His son, Hamish the Second, was a Hiccup, in reality, and, after his father's death, and, presumedly after he was coronated as the new chief, he built a labyrinth of traps and riddles to protect his father's treasure, hoping that his successor, a future Hiccup, would be able to find it.
It must be noted that this young man was a rather masterful riddler and engineer — to the point that NOBODY was able to even FIND the labyrinth, much less REACH the treasure. He was also assumed to have been a friend of dragons, since it would've been impossible to build it without their help. Plus, he also knew dragon characteristics and intentionally built the labyrinth to be impossible to navigate without a dragon (you most certainly wouldn't have survived the fall without one).
Now, it is my belief that the two Hamishes — and this is rather obvious given their backstories — are based on Grimbeard the Ghastly and his son, Hiccup the Second.
Like Father, Like Son
When you think of it, everything fits — albeit, with SOME differences.
For instance, they were kings (Hiccup a prince), while the Hamishes were just chieftains — that we know of, anyway, from their VERY SPARCE backstory (come on, DreamWorks, get it together!). Hamish the First died before his son, while Grimbeard lived sometime after Hiccup (for certain - ahem! - reasons). Hamish the First had a successful reign as Chief while Grimbeard's rule as King ended literally in flames due to his crappy parenting. Hamish the Second was the one who hid his father's treasure, when in the books, Grimbeard hid his own treasure for his future Heir to find. Hamish the Second was also a genius engineer/architect, while Hiccup the Second was not, though both were excellent riddlers and writers.
And, while not proven, it is assumed that Hamish the Second wasn't your typical Viking, while Hiccup the Second, despite being a Runt, was your Viking's Viking, but with brains, beauty, and brawn (if yv-sketches' sketches are to be believed lol 😂).
That being said, there were several similarities.
1) Both Hamish the First and Grimbeard had successful reigns for the most part and were best known for their pirating and attaining massive wealth.
2) Both fathers had Runts for sons, but loved them dearly (probably at the expense of their thrones).
3) Both leaders had treasures that Vikings, greedy to acquire the hoard for themselves, tried to find but failed and even lost their lives over it. In fact, in both instances, the true locations of the hoards were hard to find in hard-to-reach places, were booby-trapped, and had dragon guardians watching over it.
4) Both Hamish the Second and Grimbeard had a LOVE for booby traps and hard riddles.
5) In both the show and in the books, it's shown how both Stoicks were greedy for the treasure, but later realize that their greatest treasure was their sons (Hiccup the Third).
6) Both pairs were Berkians and Hooligans.
7) Both Grimbeard and Hamish the First felt confined on Berk and preferred going to other places.
8) Both sons had a great love and loyalty for their fathers, and both, respectively, have shown that through their actions.
9) Both sons have had an ambiguous imprint on history that can't immediately be seen at first glance.
10) Both sons loved dragons very much.
11) Both likely met fatal ends due to schemes for the throne and the treasure. (There is no portrait of Hamish the Second and his son, so it's possible that, like Hiccup the Second, Hamish the Second could've either lost his life or was exiled because of the dragons he was friends with or simply due to the schemes of those who wanted the treasure and throne of Berk.)
12) While the TV show would've never had this in their content for viewer reasons, it would be interesting if both Hamish II and Hiccup II shared similar childhoods of being abandoned and then taken care of by dragons, only to be reunited by their fathers later.
13) Both pairs were likely succeeded after their deaths-cum-disappearances by their respective Chuckleheads as Chieftains of Berk, respectively.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f30f7fcb8e65fdff893e15fa749eb7cc/c25a3300dc99f1ba-84/s540x810/d319cfc52f3d018153e3e35b221ac3d7e2a7dc8f.jpg)
The Viking portrait on the right kinda looks like Chucklehead, doesn't it? 👀
Okey-dokey, I think that's everything. Interesting how I had a point for every Wilderwest King in the books. There are 13 points for 13 kings.
Anywho, that's all for this article.
What do you guys think? Let me know if you have anything to add that I missed or needs correction.
Thank you so much for reading and for your support. It's been VERY fun writing these posts for you guys! 😁
Have a wonderful week!

Long Live the Chief! by Noctus Fury
Hello, everyone! Welcome to my final round of edits based on this scene. This time, it's Dagur the Deranged!
Normally, I'd start with him first, but since there were several edits, I couldn't get this done as quickly as I wanted, so I started with the others first. (Skrill, Heather, Funeral, and Osvald)
The first edit above is pretty much the same as the others. The only difference is that Dagur is there, along with Osvald's helmet and shield. There's also blood splatter on it.
Scenario: Wanting to prove that he killed his father (which he didn't, apparently) after it's discovered that he disappeared without notice, Dagur grabs his father's helmet and shield and paints it in sheep's blood before presenting it before the Elders of the Tribe, making up the story that he killed his father in a duel in accordance to Berserker Law near the cliffs when Osvald fell off the edge and drowned. A couple of his supporters stand up as "witnesses" of said duel. The Elders then have no choice but to name Dagur the New Chief, since it's impossible to find and confirm the body.
Above we see the helmet and shield close to Dagur and covering his left leg. The reason being is that his foot is missing, since in the original photo I took this pose of Dagur from, Stoick's massive shoulder was blocking it.
Scenario: Dagur poses and shows off and brags of his glorious (made-up) victory over his father and had no qualms about elaborating and exaggerating every detail down to its goriest syllable, causing excitement to ripple among the Berserkers, who've been cruelly and unjustifiably forced to avoid battles and raids by the weakling Osvald, and were hungry for blood!
Here, Dagur gloats over his "victory" with the Berserkers watching in silence, listening to his every word. I added cheering Berserkers in the background outside the door.
Scenario: Dagur laughs maniacally, his blood flaring up in excitement at the prospect of more bloodshed, more battle, more glory.
"Would any of you wish to challenge me on this?" demanded Dagur. "SPEAK UP!! If any of you object to my becoming the New Chief of this honorable and glorious Tribe, PLEASE, SPEAK UP!!! I am willing to duel whomever disagrees."
There was silence. The younger Berserkers, eager to do battle after many decades of peace, looked at Dagur as one would a Hero from bygone days of yore in the Sagas. Some of the older ones, who had followed Osvald for a long time, were skeptical and looked on disapprovingly, but said nothing after reading the atmosphere in the room and judged prudently to keep their counsel.
For this final edit, I removed the helmet and shield in favor of just adding Dagur. In addition to the cheering Berserkers outside the door, I also added cheering Berserkers inside as well. (I took these from the View to a Skrill episode.)
I actually really like the aesthetics of it. Looks pretty good if I do say so myself. 🧐🍷
Scenario: It was silent, but soon chants of "Dagur! Dagur! Dagur!" and "Long Live the Chief!" and "All Hail Your Mighty Nuttership!!" began shaking the air with the thunder of scores of cheering Berserkers hailing their new lord.
Long live the All-Nutty Chieftain of the Berserker Tribe!
<><><><><>
What do you guys think? Did I do good or what? 😁 I hope you guys enjoyed my Berserker edits and my scenarios for these edits. Hope you have a lovely week! 🥰

In Defence of httyd3: the hidden World ❤️🔥
It’s a phenomenal finale with so much heart and passion put into it. It should get more respect on the high and emotional note it ends the whole story of Hiccup and Toothless. It’s full of scenes with a lot of depth. Take the scene where Hiccup looks sadly at the new buildings of new Berk, in this moment he knows nothing was getting the way he hoped it would. It’s the moment he realizes that he can’t change how it is now. His plan, moving the whole village to the hidden world wouldn’t work because there are so many wild dragons, who were aggressive in the first place as Hiccup and Astrid entered into the hidden world. It’s some kind of holy place for them, where they are safe from harm and the cruelty of humankind. And you can clearly see the whole weight on his shoulders as he comes to this conclusion. Or the goodbye scene which is the perfect way to end the franchise. It brings it to full circle with the hand touch but in reverse. It’s also very symbolic in many ways. It symbolizes Hiccups and Toothless‘ Friendship. How they look at each other after the touch, how Hiccups says that he loves Toothless and he wants him to be safe, even if it means that they have to part ways. They made this decision together, you can clearly see this on Toothless expressions towards Hiccup. Yes, this movie operates on Hiccup and Toothless as individuals but it never forgets what the heart of the franchise is. Their relationship. Like in the first movie they both have the most growth here, as Alpha and Chief as well as person and dragon. They had let them operate on their own merits.
The emphasis that was also taken to Hiccups and Astrid’s relationship. It never was as important as in this movie. They have grown together and now they had taken together the next big step in their relationship as Chief and Chieftess aswell as Husband and Wife and parents to be. Every character had its moment to shine, be it Tuffnut with giving dating advice to Hiccup or Fishlegs with his cute baby dragon Fishmeat and the fact that he was still crushing after Ruffnut. Also by the way, I love how Ruff was written here. She was silly in the scene with Grimmel but if you look into her eyes, you know exactly that she knows what she was doing because it also worked with Dagur. She, Tuff and Fishlegs are so underrated in this movie.
By the way in my opinion Grimmel is a fantastic villain. He’s very sadistic, is deep rooted in his philosophy about dragons and is somewhat of a darker, older version of Hiccup. He represents ignorance and intolerance in humankind, but also their unstoppable greediness. He wouldn't stand for or accept anyone else's beliefs but his own. He was set in his ways and had been for all of his life. He made quite the reputation for himself in the dragon killing business, and was most likely one of the best out there. The idea that a young Chieftain had of allowing dragons to live as equals made him feel disgusted. He had lived his life seeing these beasts as nothing but thieves and murders, making him profits was all they were good for. And yet, here was a young man trying to change everything this grisly old man believed to be right, and he wouldn't stand for it.
The flight scenes feel so beautifully weightless that you got, the feeling you were really in the sky with Toothless and the Light Fury when she leads him to the hidden world. And the ending was definitely worth the wait. It was beautiful and emotional at the same time. Yeah it has its flaws and it outshines them pretty well, but so does the first and second movie, no movie is perfect and we should not only appreciate them for being a great trilogy but also that everything is manmade. In times were AI gets more and more popular in our world in terms of movies, we should appreciate those who were made by people and not a program without feelings.

— hiccup found it quite odd, especially since viggo grimborn is not one to give up so easily. after surviving by a slim chance once again from one of his ferocious traps, hiccup and the dragon riders were left alone for a good number of days. he knew he shouldn’t be complacent, knowing exactly how viggo likes to play. the moment they lower their guard, he creeps up from behind to bite them back.
“hiccup, maybe viggo doesn’t want to be found.” they all gather at the clubhouse after the third moon has passed without viggo’s presence in the midst. while hiccup was restless, the rest are beginning to feel accustomed the serene days viggo has allowed them to enjoy. astrid spoke for the rest, gesturing towards the twins doing yet again another of their unpredictable tactics.
“i think it’s time you take a day off too. you need it.”
that was how she phrased it, and he knew she meant it, but hiccup was sure that astrid is also falling into this curse of complacency. it was him against everyone on it, and so he decided to actually think of something else to do the next morning.
the first person he came looking for? you.
since he was a scrawny teenager, you were always there supporting him in anything he wished to do. it was quite the funny pair, the berkians pointed out. you were always the most promising warrior in your generation, the little orphan girl, and hiccup was the helpless fool who was only ever known as the chieftain’s son. he didn’t have any feats under his belt at the time, yet you stuck around as if he’s the most interesting person in the archipelago.
to his dismay, hiccup failed to find you after the meeting at the clubhouse. as if you were a ghost who wished to stay hidden, he began to grow more worried than confused. he rushes over to astrid’s hut in hopes of finding your location, but even your partner in battle didn’t know where you could be. though, he did gain something to work with.
“recently, we only get to see her in meetings and meal time. other than that, she’s nowhere to be found.”
has this been going on since the first moon? was he that preoccupied that he failed to notice your absence when he’s tinkering or cooking up plans at the clubhouse?
he could only scold himself at the thought. you always had a habit of disappearing when you feel like it. thing is, you’re not in berk anymore. he knows where to find you if you were back in berk, but in the edge? you didn’t even have the time looking for a hideout because of the never-ending adventures and dangers you get yourself into. in a hurry, he mounts toothless and decided to take his search to the skies.
as his eyes studied the geographical structure of the island, hiccup began to narrow down the possible spots in which you set your new hideout. he knows you like the palm of his hand, and nothing in the world will be able to stop him from ever finding you. may it be anywhere in the world, he will always, always find his way back to you.
and track you down, he did. he should have known that there’s a cave by the beach, the perfect place to dump all of your heap of junk. with toothless behind him, he enters the cave and found a torch that only confirmed his theory. deeper inside, he finds a large space arranged neatly from projects to sketches. familiar weapons hung on one side of the wall near a long table filled with mixed liquids—some looking like monstrous nightmare gel and changewing venom.
as he takes one foot over the other, hiccup eventually found just the person he was looking for. on the far end of the cave was you, standing in front of a map you’ve drawn on a large piece of parchment that enveloped the entire wall. you have been working on your own discoveries yourself.
“sketching the terrains, noting spotted dragons on each island.” he stands beside you, admiring your work. “pretty impressive. you even got the edge’s geography.”
“it took you four moons,” you snicker, folding your arms smugly. “must i be placed so lowly in your priority ranking, haddock?”
hiccup avoided your eyes, guiltily scratching at his nape where the tip of his hair falls. “it’s nothing like that.”
you laughed, nudging him lightly with an elbow. “relax, i’m kidding.”
then your eyes fall back on your map. “the world’s such a big place, isn’t it?”
“indeed, it is.”
“i can’t wait to discover each and every piece of land out there.” you hand reached on to the map, feeling the rough surface of woody parchment at the tip of your fingers. hiccup noted how your eyes held an excited glint, as if you could be bolting out of the cave to find another island right now.
that’s when he was reminded of her—of how drastically she can affect him without even trying to. hiccup feels the same burst of excitement you held in his heart upon seeing you so determined. since you were children, you have always been his inspiration.
people always had their idols, and you happen to be his.
so fierce and fearless. nothing could ever stop you, not even him, and that’s what he always envied you for. every time he looks at you—whenever he witnesses the beauty of your existence—hiccup always wondered how having such a strong sense of freedom felt.
“do give me a warning when you’re off to wreak havoc in yet another island.” hiccup joked, earning a hearty laugh from the latter. you knew that he tends to feel overly worried when he finds you nowhere in your usual spots. it was your fault he’s snappy at times, but through the years, you both outgrew it.
well, hiccup simply adapted to your volatile lifestyle.
“you don’t even need terror mails at this point.” you grinned. “you always know where to find me, haddock.”
“that i do,” he takes your hand in his, gently tugging you closer to him as his chest faced yours, “and i will always be with you.”

respond to the following prompts out of character, then tag others you'd like to get to know a little bit better.
roleplayer name: lucien!
pronouns: deez / nuts. ( he / they. )
muse name(s): jackson overland frost. :3 his name is so fucking english i literally can't type this without giggling. he's got a korean name too, but im not revealing it because of plot.
preferred communication: discord or DMs. i'm still getting used to the mechanics on tumblr rn so. 😭😭 but there r some features in tumblr's DMs that kinda tick me off, so discord's the home place for communications for me. i run a shit ton of accounts on different platforms too, so if i don't reply it's bc im out of energy or im busy with work. 💔
experience: started in pokémon. got traumatized. went to animerp. also got traumatized. the cycle repeats for about 6 years.
preferred roleplay type: dependent on the day! i've always preferred writing something fluffy as opposed to angsty, ( but the lines are very thin for this muse ) only because jack's already a VERY angsty character and as a whole and i feel if i kept writing angst i'd run out of material quickly.
pet peeves / dealbreakers: forced shipping &&. self—inserts that seem too inserted, eg. forcing themselves onto my muses. ( i realize it's essentially the same thing but trust there's a difference. ) i've only ever shipped muses after messages of development and if i see potential. it's also a matter of personal comfort.
i've had past experiences where people took it too far with their muses and got personally affected by their relationship which is INSANELY unhealthy.
another one is just ship jealousy? i've personally NEVER experienced it as the receiver before, i hope i never do anyway, but we're all friends and grown—ups here im sure we could just write without any hidden agendas. i've had people close to me suffer from this before and it's incredibly sad &&. pathetic, y'all don't do that pls.
best time to write: evening or like. really early in the morning LMAOOO. i'm a night owl most of the times so if im not getting to anything in the morning or afternoon, it's mostly all churned out at night. ( but ofc that doesn't mean i'm not active during the morning or afternoon. )
are you like your muse?: to a large extent, definitely. i wouldn't go as far as to call us twins tho? even if some people do, there's just some things that we see differently.
for starters, unlike this loser, i can swim. /silly i got medals to back my claim.
i'm definitely not as dense to love as this dude is, and i'm able to differentiate platonic and romantic ties. this SUCKS so bad knowing he's also a womanizer in the last books .. i need his ass GONE.
in terms of similarities, i truly see him as something of a vessel to articulate my grief and anger as well as nostalgia through my boyo. :3 and since i've practically rewritten his ass to incorporate book and movie and mythology lore ( it gave me a MIGRAINE during my work i swear ;; the amt of effort i place into him needs to go widespread to my course. ) parts of me are also within to fill the plot holes. <3
i offer my jack frost to write with you all with my heart and soul on the line, so it really means a whole lot to me whenever people love him.
i got tagged by @lcafman ! WAAAHHH ELLIE ILYSM /p ONE OF MY POOKIES AND A GENUINELY GREAT PERSON TO GET TO KNOW. <33

Summary:
Being a big sister to Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is not something for the faint hearted... Especially when your little brother drags you into his gang of dragon riders and enlists you for an adventure. New dragons, old and new enemies, new emotions, it can all be overwhelming, unless you're a healer and your family is Haddock, then it's your everyday life. However, there is room for something completely new in all of this. After all, everyone deserves to be loved. Right?
Chapter 1: Old friendships, new problems:
Eira had never been fond of returning to Berk since she agreed to permanently join her younger brother's gang as their healer—or nanny, as Snotlout once put it. Naturally, there were many more reasons for her occasional reluctance to visit the home island she had called home for over twenty springs than her brother and his rather curious band might have realized. Her main reason, in the form of her father, was sitting right in front of her in their hut, watching her closely. Between them on the table lay a board for Maces & Talons. Finally, after a long moment, Eira extended her hand toward one of her pieces, deftly moving it to the other side of the board. Now, all she could do was wait for a reaction, and she hadn't even managed to take a sip of the remaining beer in her mug when her father's clenched fist struck the table. The pieces next to the board jumped and fell off, scattering in all directions.
"I could have predicted you'd trap me in one of your schemes again," he said, the sound of the chair being pushed back sharp in the prevailing silence of the hut.
"You taught me well, Dad," Eira replied, savoring the last of her beer. She looked at her father with her wild green eyes, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. "And since I won..."
Her father sighed in that particular way he did when he realized he couldn't even start an argument with someone. Years ago, he had understood that any quarrel with this young woman was futile. However, a smile appeared on his face, one of the few that was sincere and full of pride.
"I was going to send him away anyway," he said, crossing his arms over his chest. "You know, it's not just you he's irritating. From the son of the Chief of the Hymir clan, I expected... well, never mind. By evening, he will no longer be on Berk."
"You could have refused his offer," she set her mug on the table and stood up. "Dad, I... I know you want the best for me."
"But? Don't look at me like that; I know that tone," he leaned against the table and looked at her meaningfully.
"But you said I could choose for myself, right?" she began to play with the bead at the end of one of her braids. "I'd like someone who... well, you know. Someone who would treat me like you treated Mom."
Stoick wanted to say something, even opened his mouth but immediately closed it. In moments like this, he wished Valka was with him. His wife would have handled this much better. Eira was already a grown woman, and as the only daughter of the chieftain, she had to marry. However, over time, Stoick realized it was easier said than done. Traditionally, the news that the chieftain of the Hooligan Tribe was looking for a suitor for his daughter spread quickly. Not even a month had passed when more and more young men started arriving at Berk. And truth be told, Stoick was... disappointed. He wanted the best for his daughter, that was not up for discussion. Eira was his firstborn, his little girl, and as she grew up, Stoick saw more of Valka in her than he ever thought possible. Eira was tall for the women of their clan, strong, wise, and, thanks to her mother, intelligent and beautiful. The mere thought that someone could hurt her, use her, or not respect her as she deserved filled Stoick with anger. And each new suitor did nothing to calm that anger.
These men, if they could even be called that, were not what Stoick wanted for Eira. Most of them applied only thinking about the dowry, about how their position would rise if they became Eira's husband. But none of them so far had been interested in her as a person, which immensely irritated both Eira and her father. Stoick loved his children, which is why he knew that forcing them to choose a partner would only hurt them. He had been very fortunate in life. He loved his wife more than anything in the world, and her loss still pained him despite the many years that had passed. Therefore, he allowed Eira to choose, because he wanted her to be as happy as he had been with her mother.
He sighed, realizing there was nothing he could do for now. "I know why you flew with Hiccup." He raised his hand, seeing that she wanted to respond. "I understand, it's neither easy nor pleasant. That's why I thought..."
"Yes?" The spark of hope that flared in her eyes confirmed that he had to go through with it.
"I'll talk to the village elders. They aren't happy with the ones who are coming to the island either." His gaze drifted to the game board still on the table. "My daughter deserves better than those brats who think they're men. So, for now, I won't accept anyone. You can also find..." He paused as Eira hugged him tightly. "...find someone yourself." He finished, hugging his daughter in return.
"Thank you, Dad. You won't regret this." She stepped back, a wide smile on her face.
"I know, now off you go before I change my mind." He said it seriously, but the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
Eira hugged her father once more, promising him that everything would be alright. She grabbed the bag she had prepared earlier and left the hut. Stoick was left alone. He picked up one of the fallen pieces from the floor, then another, until all were back on the table. Carefully, he started putting them back in the box, and an idea began to form in his mind. When he closed the box, a small symbol burned into one corner caught his attention.
He gently traced it with his finger. For a moment, a memory returned to him, one of the few he didn't like to recall. Amid all the chaos of finding a husband for his daughter, he had completely forgotten that there was only one person in the archipelago whom Stoick might consider worthy of his daughter's hand. The thought quickly turned into an idea, which he swiftly dismissed, although... No, he couldn't do that now, not when he had just promised his daughter he would let it go for a while. But on the other hand, they were both of similar age, and if Stoick was sure of one thing, it was that Sigurd had raised his grandson well, so Eira would be in good hands. So... No, he couldn't, and that was final. Maybe in some time, but certainly not now. He put the game board on the shelf, perhaps a bit too forcefully, as the noise echoed in the empty hut. There was also another problem, one of those that couldn't be easily or pleasantly solved. Stoick and the entire clan of Berk no longer hunted dragons, thanks to his son. However, Stoick knew that the one he had in mind could not be convinced, not after everything life had put him through from a young age. Stoick knew better than anyone that sometimes a person is scarred in ways that do not heal, wounds too deep to forget, especially those marked by dragon fire.
With a sigh, he left the hut and slowly walked towards the Great Hall. He quietly thanked the gods that at least he wouldn't have such problems with his son. Hiccup could deny it all he wanted, but the Hofferson girl and he were more attracted to each other than they cared to admit. Stoick had even spoken with her parents, and they had already given their consent, so it was just a matter of waiting for their children to come together on their own. He stopped in front of the Great Hall doors, preparing for his conversation with the elders, knowing that no matter how the discussion went, he would end up with a headache.
Gothi had that specific expression she usually reserved for Eira when she correctly prepared a remedy. At first, Eira was puzzled, not understanding what was happening until she saw what was written in the sand right in front of her.
"I saw your father enter the Great Hall, and I know exactly what that means. When will you stop babysitting your brother and start seriously looking for a husband?"
Eira sighed in irritation, leaning against the stair railing. Gothi was the only person in the clan with whom she could freely talk about this. It wasn't just the ironic fact that Gothi couldn't tell anyone, but it was something more... personal. Gothi had been training Eira to be a healer since Eira was eight years old. Over time, they grew very fond of each other, and since Gothi had no children of her own, she treated Eira like family. As one of the elders and the village healer, she understood what Eira was going through and openly disapproved of all the suitors.
"Gothi, please, not today. I barely won against my father, and for now, I'm taking a break from all this." Eira lifted a sack full of packed herbs onto the table and began sorting through its contents. She sighed again upon hearing Gothi's staff scrape against the sand. She knew exactly what the older woman would say.
"I know that those who sailed to Berk are not suitable for you, but you're not getting any younger. If you spent more time on the island instead of flying around with your brother and his band..."
"We've talked about this, remember? If the only reason all these men are coming here is my dowry and who my father is, they might as well forget it. I won't be anyone's trophy." One of the pouches fell out of the sack, spilling its contents on the floor. Eira cursed under her breath and started picking up what had fallen. She heard the rustling of sand again.
"I understand that. But you are the daughter of our chieftain, and like your father, you have duties to our clan. I know Stoick allowed you to choose a husband, but that doesn't mean you can delay it until Ragnarok."
Eira took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. "I know exactly what I have to do. But I won't be a wife to someone who looks at me and only thinks about the size of the chest in which my dowry comes." She practically hissed the last words, trying to tie the herb pouch. "Besides, my father promised to take a break from this because he's as frustrated as I am. And I don't blame him since everyone is trying to buy me like... like a sheep at the market!" Her voice echoed. The sack contained everything she needed and even a few things she forgot to mention. She was about to take everything and say goodbye when Gothi started scribbling in the sand again.
"I have a proposition for you."
Those few words made Eira freeze. She had honestly planned to quickly say goodbye and leave, explaining that her brother was probably already waiting for her, but she knew what she was really doing. Eira was running away, and if she were honest with herself, she was tired of it. With unconcealed irritation, she leaned against the stair railing, waiting for Gothi to continue. What started to appear in the sand was... not what she expected.
"I have a distant relative in another clan, far to the north. If I remember correctly, she has a grandson about your age and if..."
"Gothi, with all due respect, I don't need matchmaking. I can manage perfectly well..." Gothi interrupted her, poking her with her staff.
"I see how well you're doing. This grandson is the chieftain of his clan. You could become the wife of a chieftain, which in your situation, is even advantageous."
"So, you dissuaded my father and the rest of the elders from all the suitors because you want to match me with your relative's grandson? I know you mean well, but for now, I'm done with this, understand? Maybe when the thought of marriage stops making me nauseous, we can talk about this grandson." She picked up the sack of herbs and started walking slowly toward the stairs. "And if you think this mysterious grandson is suitable for me, he should come here himself." She began descending the stairs without looking back. Gothi watched her with concern and worry until Eira disappeared from her sight.
Every time the gang returned to Berk, it involved a certain risk. Of course, flying on dragons, they covered the distance between their base and Berk in a few days, but their base remained unguarded, as did the dragons inhabiting it. However, the supplies they flew in for were essential to life at their base, making the risk worthwhile.
Eira usually didn't have to check what the gang took with them; everyone except the twins—for obvious reasons—always took only the essentials. Her dragon was already waiting for her, an old female Monstrous Nightmare named Firewing, who was a calm dragon, although Eira and the gang knew that if necessary, she could ignite, literally. After making sure all her belongings were securely fastened to the saddle, Eira leaned against the dragon and sighed.
Her brief moment of peace was interrupted by Astrid, approaching her with Ruffnut. Since Eira had left Gothi's hut and came within the gang's sight, she felt their watchful eyes on her. However, she had no intention of bringing up the subject she knew they would inevitably ask about. She didn't even need to turn around to sense Astrid's presence behind her.
"Eira, we all know you hate this topic, but we saw your father enter the Great Hall, and..." Astrid didn't know how to ask the right question. Eira sighed, knowing her friends were just curious. She turned towards them, leaning against the saddle.
"Okay, I'll say this once today, and I don't want to hear about it again for the next few days, okay?" She took another breath, rubbing her temple. "For now, the plan is to return to the base. Father is also tired of all these pathetic excuses for men who think they can buy me like cattle at a market, so until further notice, we're not accepting any proposals."
After she spoke, a pleasant silence fell. Even the twins decided to behave, knowing well that an irritated Eira was a dangerous Eira. She flinched slightly when Hiccup placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Listen, I know what you have to do isn't easy, but..."
"But what, Hiccup?" she looked at him, irritated. "Do you know how exhausting it is? The entire clan expects me to marry a wealthy, influential man so our clan can make an alliance. All I ever hear is how important it is for everyone, how Berk will benefit. But do you know what no one does?" She looked at him, at all of them, with frustration. "No one asked if this is what I want, no one even considered if I want to be a prize for whoever offers the most, for whoever presents the best deal."
She suddenly stopped when Hiccup hugged her tightly. Over the past few years, he had grown and was slightly taller than her. It was probably something she needed because she melted into his embrace, taking a sharp breath. Her frustration diminished, and after a few more deep breaths, she pulled away slightly to look at her younger brother.
"Better?" Hiccup looked at her with his sometimes exaggerated concern. Eira snorted, nodding.
"I needed that. You know, father was convinced to take a break from it; he was really upset with that guy from the Hymir clan."
"Oh yes, the guy was annoying." Hiccup hugged her again and then let go.
"You better pray to the gods I don't find someone who will love teasing you, little brother." She nudged him with her elbow, a mocking smile on her face.
"Eira, you wouldn't... right?"
"Ha! That would be hilarious. Surely there's someone in the archipelago who doesn't even have to try to make your blood boil. If he's handsome..."
"Eira, it's not funny!" He tried to be serious but couldn't hide how amused he was.
"Of course it is, just not for you, little brother." She wanted to say more but was interrupted by her father, who, along with Gobber, had left the Great Hall and was heading towards them, clearly displeased.
For a moment, Eira feared the worst, which in her case would be that the elders didn't agree to stop searching for a husband for her. Her father had that expression she knew all too well, and she knew someone was in serious trouble.
"Which of the usual suspects was sinking boats with their dragon this morning? I have my suspicions." Stoick threw an irritated glance at the twins.
"Boats? What boats?" Eira asked, curious, feeling a wave of relief wash over her.
"Bucket and Mulch saw everything, so don't even try to convince me that anyone else in the entire archipelago could have done such a thing!"
When her father wanted to, he could look terrifying. The twins immediately began confessing, but Eira and Hiccup knew well that whoever sank the fishing boats couldn't have been from their gang. They had all been packing supplies together since the morning and would have noticed if the twins had suddenly disappeared with their dragon.
"Dad, I know the twins sometimes cause a lot of trouble and damage, but even they aren't stupid enough to sink our boats. Besides, we've all been packing since morning."
Eira approached her father, placing a hand on his forearm. Since the day her mother was taken by dragons, it became clear to everyone that if there was anyone on Berk who could calm their Chief's anger, it was his daughter. Stoick sighed, clearly calming down.
"If it's not the twins, then we might have a bigger problem than I thought."
Finding the destroyed boat wasn't difficult. During the flight, it occurred to them that it could all be the work of just one person. Eira hadn't thought about Dagur since they sent him to the prison on Outcast Island. The mere thought that someone as crazy as the Berserker Chief could tame a dragon, especially one from the Sharp Class, which they discovered by finding sharp spines on the ship, made Eira feel a knot in her stomach.
They returned to Berk quickly and entered the Great Hall, wanting to discover as soon as possible which dragon they needed to look for. Stormfly's magnetic fire activated the Dragon Eye, while Hiccup and Eira carefully turned the rings until what appeared on the wall resembled what Bucket claimed had attacked his boat.
"That dragon is a Razorwhip!" Fishlegs, clearly excited about the new dragon species, immediately approached the wall and began reading the runes with Eira.
"Okay. Razorwhip. Sharp class dragon. Long, spiny, barbed tail," Fishlegs began, clearly pleased with himself.
Eira's smile waned as he continued. "Very aggressive. Very dangerous. This symbol indicates it can use its tail to wrap around a victim and literally squeeze the life out of them."
"Unless it's in a hurry. Then it just slices you in half," Fishlegs added with a flinch.
"Does it have any weaknesses, Fishlegs?" Eira asked, desperation creeping into her voice. "Maybe the eyes?"
"No, it has poisonous tears. This dragon has no weaknesses, I'm sorry," Fishlegs said, scanning the wall again but finding nothing helpful.
"Eira, don't worry, we'll find him," Hiccup said, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Fishlegs, where does this thing live? What does it eat? If we figure that out, we might be able to find it."
"I found it! Sea slugs! Hiccup, this dragon eats sea slugs!" Fishlegs turned to everyone with a broad smile.
"And it just so happens that we know several islands that abound in sea slugs," Hiccup said.
They had already searched most of the islands where the rider and his dragon could potentially be hiding. Eira looked at her younger brother worriedly. "Hiccup, what do we do when we find the dragon? It's very dangerous, and if it's Dagur flying on it, we have to be very careful."
"We'll worry about that when we find them. Guys, look! Smoke!"
"A campfire."
Eira decided to fly high with her dragon to survey the island from above, while the rest of the gang searched closer to the ground. After some time and not finding anything unusual, Eira turned Firewing back to the spot where the gang had found the fire pit. Landing, she didn't expect to see someone she hadn't seen in years.
"Heather?" Eira dismounted as soon as Firewing landed.
"Hi, Eira, it's been a while."
"Heather!" Eira ran to her and hugged her tightly.
It turned out that Heather was in trouble, and serious trouble at that. After Eira managed to persuade her to return to the base with her and the gang, Heather finally gave in and flew with them. When they landed and stabled their dragons, Eira declared that Heather could stay in her hut.
Eira's hut was located near the club and arena, partly leaning against a steep slope. The hut was cozy, with the entire ground floor dedicated to the herbs and medicines Eira made, with a bed for the sick. The entire upper floor was her bedroom with a large bed, a chest for clothes, and many shelves full of books and scrolls. When Heather sat on the bed on the ground floor, Eira searched her shelves for something to drink. Finding a bottle of juice, she poured some for herself and Heather.
"I heard you're looking for a husband," Heather said, never one to mince words around Eira, something Eira was sometimes grateful for.
"Don't even remind me. After three months, I'm coming to the conclusion that there are no real men in the archipelago."
They started laughing and had a pleasant evening, mostly gossiping and catching up. Eira complained about every candidate who dared to come to Berk, and Heather could barely keep a straight face. At some point, they both agreed it was late and they should go to bed.
Heather waited until Eira turned off the light in her bedroom, waiting a bit longer to make sure she was actually asleep. She sneaked out of the hut as quietly as possible, heading to the stables where her dragon was already waiting for her. Eira came out of her hut just in time to see Heather flying away. It irked her a bit that her friend still forgot Eira wasn't just a healer in the gang. Hiccup joined her quickly; they both had a feeling something was wrong with Heather. Wanting to find out the truth, they decided to follow her. They flew high in the clouds, so she wouldn't see them. Hidden on one of the rocks jutting out of the sea, they watched as Heather landed on a moored boat and spoke with someone. The moon had just come out from behind the clouds, illuminating everything with a pale light. To their surprise, standing on the boat with Heather was Johann.
