Any fans of David Clement Davies read his latest fantasy book "Scream of the White Bear"? What the hell happened to this one?

Fire Bringer, his 1st novel, is one of my very favorite books. SWB is at least his 4th book and somehow the worst written. It has a large and embarrassing amount of typos, rambling and confusing dialogue...so much of the writing just ssSUUUUUCKCKKS

I want to bite into David Clement Davies' fucking arm every single time he makes a character say another character's name repeatedly in dialogue, or add the word "though" to his sentences like infinite sandwich toppings. STOP THAT!! I can't follow half of what your character say about their mythology, which they treat like a deep religion and Lore(tm) but is just 1 single, convoluted meandering ass story.

The characters talk about their lore endlessly like its very deep but it's just. Not. They meander on about philosophical Maybes and like. Talk about their Jesus figure and an ancient warrior class who we are supposed to sometimes like and sometimes not like. The overarching story is interesting to me but the dragging, convoluted and dumb ass writing is a slog to get through. Mostly the dialogue.

Allow me to simulate some dialogue.

"Yes" Character answered the bear though "and perhaps it came from an old lore from within the ice itself, bear. Yet perhaps it was told to change the stories themselves too, Bergo*, and it shall change darkness into light as the world dies and turns our dreams themselves dark, bear. The world goes mad though, and gods whisper much abed the shores like my father. But in the Great Story we know our peace, you and I are one abd the same though bear."

*T/N Bergo means bear. Bellarg also means bear. I think Barg also means bear.

I have to wonder if this book was written under some sort of intense time crunch or out of financial desperation? I know it was an ebook first. You'd think that would be a chance to clean up typos before printing physical copes, but NAH

And the audacity to begin each chapter with quotes or snippets from the likes of W.B. Yeats and Shakespeare, when you published this I-never-kill-my-darlings first draft??!??

"Whatever little light came would not be great" oh is that so, is that bc there's little light u just said? Good bears are getting murdered by the villain and girl bear says "Oh Uteq it's so terrible!" is that ur best dialogue when u witness murder?

"Our quest within as well just begins then," said Sorgan though---I AM HAVING A FUCKING STROKE

I try to read so many sentences and rambling, half-coherent paragraphs of this ice lore shit and I'm like David STOP!! David shut up!! David think about what you're doing! PleasE! DaVIIIIIIID!!!!

HE WROTE FIRE BRINGER AND SIGHT!! I KNOW THIS MAN CAN WRITE FANTASY EPICS AND ENGAGING, ETHEREAL PROSE, AND THE BONES ARE THERE, BUT GOD WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS ONE!

I am 276 pages in and I'm probably going to finish it.

I think Trek asked something similar and I mentioned that…a lot of the stuff I watch is cooking related? So a lot of the books I read also tend to be cookbooks.

The best one I was going through recently was probably Alan Bergo’s Forager’s book of Flora.

I have about the same trouble you do with this kind of thing probably because most foraging books are written presuming temperate climates and I’m…in the subtropics.

He has recipes, flavor profiles, and just a lot of neat workable tips (like a full guide on how to make acorn flour—which is a PROCESS.)

But he’s also sensitive to the seasonal availability of things so most of the guides are suggestions or have alternate non-foraged options for making stuff.

It’s a really interesting read, and also probably the last book I checked out from the library and liked so much I went out and bought my own copy.

As for rocking out in my home…lol. I like the Hu same as you. And my kitchen playlist is usually divorced dad classic rock or James Brown and not much in between. Makes things feel more exciting and also gets less objection from other people walking in if I’m not doing it with headphones on. (Rare.)

On my absolute own?

Haggard.

Which…has a strange combination of baroque/medieval music and. Well. Metal. (Most people know them for their Italian cover of Herr Mannelig.)

It’s almost impossible to get this album anywhere for streaming in the states, so. I have it on a CD and sometimes set up with that.

Mari kita awali paragraf pembuka dgn mantra untuk menerima dan mempertahankan diri, "haaaah". First of all, aku sama sekali tidak membenci daerah Maluku. Tapi, pada kenyataannya memang daerah tersebut cukup membuat hati dan keadaanku berantakan. Deep inside my heart ketika aku ingat akan Maluku, sungguh menciptakan suatu bentuk rasa marah, cemburu, sakit dan kecewa. Masih begitu jelas segala bentuk ucapan, tulisan, respon dia akan salah satu perempuan manis dari pulau tersebut.

Aku hampir masih sering sesak ketika melihat, membaca, mengetahui informasi² mengenai Maluku. Rasanya mustahil sekali untuk membenci suatu daerah bahkan yg jelas² menyimpan banyak sekali keindahan alamnya. Namun nyatanya, ketika hati kita tersakiti.. hal² yg tidak mungkin ternyata mampu terjadi. Adalah aku perempuan yg sebentar lg meninggalkan jejak di seperempat abad usiaku, bertubuh gendut, paras tak semanis dan seteduh perempuan dari timur. Mungkin juga berbagai perangaiku yg jauh dari kata baik jika dibandingkan dgn perempuan yg masih belia itu.

Ternyata menjadi perempuan tidaklah mudah. Batas-batas waktu, kualitas serta kuantitas kaum hawa yg semakin hari semakin bertambah banyak dan baik.. haaah dunia oh dunia.

Mendapati hari dgn setumpuk pikiran negatif berlebih tentu membuat fisik menjadi jauh lebih mudah lelah. Seperti halnya sore ini, aku membatalkan jadwal mengajar les karena ku rasa tak sanggup lagi. Ditambah posisi perut lapar, sungguh paket kombo menyulut emosi. Malamnya, tak ku sangka tak ku duga menemui seorang laki² yg dia memanggilku dgn "bu". Bisa dibayangkan bagaimana kesalnya diriku? Menahan berbagai hal agar tak memenuhi pikiran negatif, namun ternyata justru harus menemui seseorang yg semakin menambah kadar emosi.

Sebelumnya aku jarang mempermasalahkan panggilan "bu" dari orang² asing. Atau terkadang akan ku respon dgn "saya belum ibu², kak". meskipun kesal sekali dgn ucapannya. Namun hari ini karena sudah lelah sekali dgn Maluku, energiku habis dan tak sanggup lagi untuk sekadar basa basi atau merespon laki² si penjual matras tadi. Padahal aku bukan tipe orang yg seperti itu. Biasanya aku pasti yg akan lebih dulu menyapa dan menanyakan beberapa hal, akan tetapi malam tadi benar² berbeda sekali. Aku sama sekali tak menanyakan pertanyaan seperti biasanya; " asli dr mana mas? kuliah atau kerja? oh kok tau ini dari mana?". Aku hanya menunggunya yg sedang mencoba menyalakan kompor untuk mengetahui kondisinya hidup dan layak digunakan. Aku pun tak mengarahkan jalan pulang seperti biasanya. Justru laki² tadi yg banyak bertanya, untuk apa barang² yg dipesan dan dia jg menanyakan arah jalan pulang sembari berterima kasih dan mengucapkan "terima kasih, semoga berkah ya. assalamu'alaikum". Sempat tertegun, namun hanya ku respon dgn " aamiin, makasih".

Setelah ku pikir², ketika aku mengenakan khimar/bergo yg berukuran besar layaknya mukena.. memang banyak yg memanggilku bu. Namun ketika aku menggunakan pashmina atau jilbab segi empat dgn ukuran normal syar'i alhamdulillah masih dipanggil dgn mba/kak. Namun untuk hari ini, perkaranya tidak sesimpel khimar dan panggilan ibu. Tetap yg paling utama yaitu mengenai Maluku, sehingga membuat kondisi diriku sangat berantakan. Terkadang ketika mengingat sesuatu yg menyakitkan dan mengecewakan, justru yg terjadi malah perasaan bahwa diriku tidak berharga, diriku tidak layak bahagia, diriku tidak layak untuk siapa². Padahal sudah seharusnya kita mencintai, mengupayakan dan menerima dgn baik atas segala kondisi diri kita sendiri.

Ah, maafkan hamba yg masih sering lupa bersyukur akan banyaknya nikmatmu yaa Allah..
