Inside William’s Next Act: Tatler’s May issue goes behind the scenes as the Prince of Wales is rising above the noise — and playing the long game
The burden of leadership is falling upon Prince William, but as former BBC Royal Correspondent, Wesley Kerr OBE, explains in Tatler’s May cover story, the future king is taking charge
By Wesley Kerr OBE
21 March 2024
Tumblr media
When I first met Prince William in 2009, he asked me if I could tell him how he could win the National Lottery.
It was a jokey quip from someone who has since become the Prince of Wales, the holder of three dukedoms, three earldoms, two baronies and two knighthoods, and heir to the most prestigious throne on earth.
He was, of course, being relatable; I was representing the organisation that had allocated Lottery funding towards the Whitechapel Gallery and he wanted to put me at ease.
William is grand but different, royal but real.
At 6ft 3in, he has the bearing and looks great in uniform after a distinguished, gallant military career.
He will be one of the tallest of Britain’s kings since Edward Longshanks in the 14th century and should one day be crowned sitting above the Stone of Scone that Edward ‘borrowed.’
William, by contrast, has a deep affinity with Scotland and Wales, having lived in both nations and gained solace from the Scottish landscape after his mother died.
He’s popular in America and understands that the Crown’s relationship to the Commonwealth must evolve.
The Prince of Wales has long believed that ‘the Royal Family has to modernise and develop as it goes along, and it has to stay relevant’, as he once said in an interview.
He seeks his own way of being relatable, of benefitting everybody, in the context of an ancient institution undergoing significant challenge and upheaval, as the head of a nation divided by hard times, conflicts abroad, and social and political uncertainty.
We might recognise Shakespeare’s powerful line spoken by Claudius in Hamlet: ‘When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions.’
With the triple announcement in January and February of the Princess of Wales’s abdominal surgery and long convalescence, of King Charles’s prostate procedure and then of his cancer diagnosis, the burden of leadership has fallen on 76-year-old Queen Camilla and, crucially, on William.
Tumblr media
The Prince of Wales’s time has come to step up; and so he has deftly done.
In recent months, we have seen a fully-fledged deputy head of state putting into practice his long-held ideas, speaking out on the most contentious issue of the day and taking direct action on homelessness.
Last June, he unveiled the multi-agency Homewards initiative with the huge aspiration of ending homelessness, backed with £3 million from his Foundation to spearhead action across the UK.
He is consolidating Heads Together, the long-standing campaign on mental health, and fundraises for charities like London’s Air Ambulance Charity.
He was, of course, once a pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance services – a profession that had its downside: seeing people in extremis or at death’s door, he found himself ‘taking home people’s trauma, people’s sadness.’
Tom Cruise was a guest at the recent London’s Air Ambulance Charity fundraiser, William’s first gala event after Kate’s operation.
And more stardust followed when William showed that, even without his wife by his side, he could outclass any movie star at the Baftas.
There’s also his immense aim of helping to ‘repair the planet’ itself with his Earthshot Prize: five annual awards of £1 million for transformative environmental projects with worldwide application.
This project has a laser focus on biodiversity, better air quality, cleaner seas, reducing waste and combating climate change. Similar aims to his father; different means to achieve the goal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the issue which has caused huge convulsions – the Middle East conflict – William’s 20 February statement from Kensington Palace grabbed attention.
He said he was ‘deeply concerned about the terrible human cost of the conflict since the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October. Too many have been killed.’
There were criticisms – along the lines of ‘the late Queen would have never spoken out like this’ or ‘what right does he have to meddle in politics?’ – but it was hard to disagree with his carefully calibrated words.
His call for peace, the ‘desperate need’ for humanitarian aid, the return of the hostages.
The statement was approved by His Majesty’s Government, likely cleared with the King himself at Sandringham the previous weekend and also backed by the chief rabbi of Great Britain, Sir Ephraim Mirvis.
Indeed, William and Catherine had immediately spoken out on the horrors of 7 October.
William followed up the week after his Kensington Palace statement by visiting a synagogue and sending a ‘powerful message’, according to the chief rabbi, by meeting a Holocaust survivor and condemning anti-Semitism.
This is rooted in deep personal conviction following William’s 2018 visit to Israel and the West Bank, says Valentine Low, the distinguished author of Courtiers and The Times’s royal correspondent of 15 years, who was on that 2018 trip.
‘William was so moved by his visit to Israel and the West Bank, he found it very affecting, and he was not going to drop this issue – he was going to pay attention to it for the rest of his life,’ says Low.
‘He must feel that… not to say something on the most important issue in the world [at that moment] would be a bit odd if you feel so strongly about it.’
Tumblr media
There was concern from some commentators about politicising the monarchy, but this rose above the particulars of party politics.
As Prince of Wales, like his father before him, there is perhaps space to speak out sparingly on carefully chosen issues.
On this occasion, his views were in line with majority public opinion.
On homelessness, news came that same week that William was planning to build 24 homes for the homeless on his Duchy of Cornwall estate.
‘William’s impact is very personal,’ says Mick Clarke, chief executive of The Passage, a charity providing emergency accommodation for London’s homeless.
‘Two weeks before Christmas, the prince came to our Resource Centre in Victoria for a Christmas lunch for 150 people.
He was scheduled to stay for an hour, to help serve, wash up, and talk to people.
He ended up staying for two and a quarter hours, during which time he went from table to table and spoke to every single person.’
Clarke continues:
‘William has an ability to listen, talk and to put people at ease. During the November 2020 lockdown, he came on three separate occasions to help.
It gave the team a boost that he took the time; it was his way of saying: “I support you; you’re doing a great job.”’
Seyi Obakin, chief executive of Centrepoint, one of the prince’s best-known causes, adds:
‘People associate his patronage with the big moments like the time he and I slept under Blackfriars Bridge.
The things that stick with me are smaller in scale and the more profound for it – in quieter moments, away from the cameras, where he has volunteered his time.’
It is a different approach from the King’s.
As Prince of Wales, he was involved in the minutiae of dozens of issues at any one time, working into the night to follow up on emails, crafting his speeches, writing or dictating notes.
Add to that much nationwide touring over 40 years (after he left active military service in 1976), fitting in multiple engagements, often being greeted formally by lord lieutenants.
This is not William’s style. He has commended his father’s model, but he does things his own way.
Although patronages are under review, William has up till now far fewer than either his father or his grandparents.
Tumblr media
Charles is sympathetic to William’s approach and his desire to make time with his young family sacrosanct.
They are confidantes, attested by the night of Queen Elizabeth’s death.
They were both at Birkhall with Camilla, reviewing funeral arrangements while the rest of the grieving family were nearby at Balmoral, hosted by the Princess Royal.
Charles has had almost six decades in public life and is the senior statesman of our time, with even longer in the spotlight than Joe Biden.
After Eton and St Andrew’s University, where he met Catherine, William served in three branches of the military between 2006 and 2013, finishing as a seasoned and skilled helicopter rescue pilot.
His later employment as an air ambulance pilot stopped in 2017, when he became a full-time working royal.
At that time, not so long ago – with Harry unmarried, Andrew undisgraced, and Philip and Elizabeth still active – William shared the spotlight.
Now, after the King, he’s the key man.
He can look back on the success of his first big campaign initially launched with his wife and brother in 2016: Heads Together.
‘We are delighted that Prince William should have become such a positive and sympathetic advocate for mental health through his Heads Together initiative and now well-established text service, Shout, among other projects,’ says the longtime CEO and founder of Sane, the remarkable Marjorie Wallace CBE.
‘It is not always known that he follows in the footsteps of his father, the King, whose inspiration and vision were vital in the creation of our mental health charity Sane.
As founding patron, he was instrumental in establishing our 365-days-a-year helpline and was a remarkable and selfless support to me in setting up the Prince of Wales International Centre for Sane Research.’
'Indeed,' says Wallace, 'this is where Prince William echoes the work of his father, showing the same ‘understanding and compassion for people struggling through dark and difficult times of their lives and has done much to raise awareness and encourage those affected to speak out and seek help.
We owe a huge debt to His Majesty and the Prince of Wales for their involvement in this still-neglected area.’
Just as I saw all those years ago at that early solo engagement in Whitechapel, William still approaches his public duties with humour and fun.
‘He defuses the formality with jocularity,’ says Valentine Low, citing two public events in 2023 that he witnessed.
In April last year, while on a visit to Birmingham, William randomly answered the phone in an Indian restaurant he was being shown around and took a table booking from a customer – an endearing act of spontaneity.
On his arrival later that day, the unsuspecting diner was surprised to be told exactly whom he had been talking to.
Tumblr media
In October, Low reported, William ‘unleashed his inner flirt as he hugged his way through a visit with Caribbean elders [in Cardiff] to mark Black History Month.
As he gave one woman a hug – for longer than she expected – he joked: “I draw the line at kissing.”
And while posing for a group photograph, he prompted gales of laughter when he quipped: “Who is pinching my bottom?”’
Low believes that when William eventually becomes king, he will be more ‘radical’ than his father but wonders if people will respond to ‘call me William’ when ‘the whole point of the Royal Family is mystique and being different.’
However, William has thought deeply about his current role and is prepared for whatever his future holds.
For now, there is a decision to be made on Prince George’s secondary schooling. It’s said that five public schools are being considered, all fee-paying.
Eton is single-sex and boarding but close to home. Marlborough (Catherine’s alma mater) is co-ed and full boarding. And Oundle, St Edward’s Oxford and Bradfield College (close to Kate’s parents) are co-ed with a mix of boarding and day.
As parents, William and Catherine aspire to raise their children ‘as good people with the idea of service and duty to others as very important’, William said in an interview with the BBC in 2016.
‘Within our family unit, we are a normal family.’ Which may be one reason why he is so resistant to their privacy being compromised either by the media or close family members.
Tumblr media
The 19th-century author Walter Bagehot wrote:
‘A family on the throne is an interesting idea also. It brings down the pride of sovereignty to the level of petty life… a princely marriage is the brilliant edition of a universal fact, and, as such, it rivets mankind.’
If hereditary monarchy is to survive, it must beguile us but also demonstrate its utility, that it is a force for good.
William said in that 2016 interview, ‘I’m going to get plenty of criticism over my lifetime,’ echoing Queen Elizabeth II’s famous Guildhall speech in 1992 ‘that criticism is good for people and institutions that are part of public life. No institution – city, monarchy, whatever – should expect to be free from the scrutiny of those who give it their loyalty and support, not to mention those who don’t.’
William saw close up his mother’s ability to bring public focus and her own personal magnetism to any subject or cause she focused on.
He admires his father’s work ethic, the way he ‘really digs down,’ sometimes literally (I understand that gardening is giving the King solace during his cancer treatment).
But the biggest influence for William was Her late Majesty, as he said on her 90th birthday.
As an Eton schoolboy, William made weekend visits to the big house on the hill, being mentored by Granny rather as she had been tutored in the Second World War by the then vice-provost of Eton, Sir Henry Marten.
William said in 2016:
‘In the Queen, I have an extraordinary example of somebody who’s done an enormous amount of good and she’s probably the best role model I could have.’
That said, his aim was ‘finding your own path but with very good examples and guidance around you to support you.'
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II had a brilliant way of rising above the fray and usually being either a step ahead of public opinion or in tune with it.
If you are at the helm of affairs in a privileged hereditary position, your duty is to serve and use your pulpit for the benefit of others.
In a democracy, monarchy is accountable.
The scrutiny is intense, with an army of commentators paid for wisdom and hot air about each no-show, parsing each announcement, interpreting each image.
William takes the long view. He has ‘wide horizons,’ says Mick Clarke.
‘There are so many causes that are more palatable and easier to achieve than ending homelessness, but his commitment and drive are 100 per cent.’
The prince seeks a different way of being royal in an ancient institution that must move with the times. His task? To develop something modern in an ever-changing world.
He faces all sorts of new issues – or old issues in new guises.
Noises off from within the family don’t help – Andrew’s difficulties, or the suggestions of prejudice from Montecito a couple of years ago (now seemingly withdrawn), which prompted William’s most vehement soundbite: ‘We’re very much not a racist family.’
William is maybe a new kind of leader who can keep the monarchy relevant and resonant in the coming decades.
Queen Elizabeth II is a powerful exemplar and memory, but she was of her time. William is his own man.
He must overcome and think beyond ‘the unforgiving minute.’
Indeed, he could seek inspiration in Rudyard Kipling’s poem, If.
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch[…]
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

2016 VoicePlay fall roundup — projects galore, frequent travels, and holiday cheer
As summer rolled into autumn, VoicePlay just kept rolling on their various creative fronts.
While the other guys were cruising in the northeast, Tony and Layne were hard at work back home, prepping and filming PattyCake's first Halloween video.
Tumblr media
.
California schemin'
Once the sailors were rested up, most of the guys headed for the west coast. They spent two days in Los Angeles filming collaboration videos, first with Kurt Hugo Schneider and then with AJ Rafael.
Tumblr media
On the upside, their absence from Florida meant that they didn't have to take shelter from Hurricane Matthew. Unfortunately, Tony wasn't involved in the videos (for reasons that would soon become clear) and was supposed to be on a later flight than the others. He didn't make it out of Orlando before the airport was shut down.
From L.A., the guys hopped up the coast to San Francisco to perform at a benefit concert for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation hosted by the Alpha Epsilon Phi fraternity at Stanford University. With Tony stuck at home, the fellas called in their old buddy Paul Sperrazza from Vox Audio to pinch hit as their baritone for the night.
Tumblr media
.
Squeeze me in
After a few days at home, the guys hit the road again. They started with three days of student workshops in eastern Ohio.
During the week, they set their social media followers the challenge of finding them among the crowds of students and faculty at some of the schools. (Can you spot them all? The kids make surprisingly good camouflage.)

Zoarville, OH — Tuscarawas Valley Elementary School
On the final day, they worked with the choirs from two local high schools, who then joined them for a show at Kent State Tuscarawas the following night.

.
From there, the guys headed south to West Memphis, AR for another concert and a workshop at the local high school the day after that. One crafty fan brought them homemade VP logo cookies.

Next they flew up to NYC to perform at a fundraiser for the Lupus Foundation of America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Then they scooted upstate to Rochester for a show at Nazareth College before finally heading home.
Tumblr media
.
Happy holiday-ween
Once they returned to Orlando, it was time to buckle down on rehearsals for their second year at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, so that they'd all be able to hit the stage running in November. (Layne did take the time in the middle of the week to have dinner with their old friend Jeff Thatcher and introduce him to Doris, though.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The extra twist this year was that, on top of getting themselves and their backup guys ready to perform their holiday setlists, these performances would also be their next step toward formally acknowledging Tony's departure. He wouldn't be joining the other guys on stage in Tomorrowland this season. Instead, they would alternate between two replacement baritones, Erik Winger and J.None, who would continue performing with them into the new year, until the group could decide on a new permanent member.
.
No trick, all treats
At the end of the month, Geoff & Kathy announced that baby Castellucci was on the way at long last. They shared a short video documenting some of their challenging road to parenthood on Geoff's personal YouTube channel.
Tumblr media
and baby makes three… er, five?

WARNING: This video contains footage of Kathy receiving many injections in her belly and buttocks. As a result, she engages in some pain-induced swearing. Understandable, but probably NSFW.
.
One of the pumpkins from the baby reveal was then repurposed to create VoicePlay's social media posts for the day of Halloween.

.
North to South (Carolina)
After a week and a half at home, the guys moseyed up to South Carolina for a pair of shows in Aiken, this time with Erik Winger as their substitute baritone.
A group of fans, perturbed by some negativity they'd been seeing directed toward the guys in YouTube comments and on social media, had been conspiring amongst themselves to counteract that energy. They'd created a book of positive messages and images. The two friends who had volunteered to collect and deliver everyone's submissions also documented the presentation during the post-show meet and greet on the first night so that all the contributors could see the guys' initial reactions.

The second day also held a few surprises.

Sing, laugh, and be merry
And then it was off to the races. VoicePlay began their second annual residency in Tomorrowland for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney World in early November. For nearly 100 performances over the course of six weeks, they once again entertained thousands upon thousands of visitors to the Magic Kingdom.
Tumblr media
.
Hardcore mode
In between MVMCP shows, the guys continued doing their other jobs. Among other things, that meant Earl was lucky enough to be playing Crush in the Nemo live show when iconic professional wrestler Mick Foley was in the audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earl meeting Mick Foley // the VP MVMCP B-team — Tony F., Antonio, Deejay, Joey, & J.None
Having a full cast of replacement singers came in handy during the second week of Disney World shows. VoicePlay had also booked a holiday concert down in Delray Beach for the Friday before Thanksgiving. So, while Winger filled in for Tony on the road, J.None and the rest of Echo took to the Tomorrowland stage in full force.
Eli and Ashley even left a day early and took a detour to attend a Carrie Underwood show in Tampa on the way.
.
VoicePlaying for Gamecocks
At the beginning of December, VoicePlay headed up to South Carolina with Winger once more for their last non-Disney holiday concert of the year at USC.
Tumblr media
.
Bubblicious
In early December, some of the guys finally got to meet the British music blogger who had been singing their praises for several years when his vacation itinerary brought him to the Magic Kingdom.
Tumblr media
.
Caroling we roll along
Their final video shoot of the year was also the final entry in their first set of PartWork videos, a gentle rendition of "O Little Town of Bethlehem". With the announcement of Tony's departure drawing closer, the other four guys were all featured in this video in their usual roles, and Geoff did double duty to cover the baritone part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
VoicePlates
As a fun little end-of-year treat, their pal (and former 4:2:Five tenor) Danny Alan stumbled upon some holiday paper goods that bore a surprisingly familiar looking design.
Tumblr media
.
The guys finally took the last few days of the year to relax and rest in preparation for their hectic start to the new year, but those are stories for another time.

Democrat Stacey Abrams, who raised more than $100 million in her second failed attempt to become governor of Georgia, seems to have left more than a few disgruntled staffers in her wake.
Multiple staffers told Axios that they stopped receiving pay one week after Abrams lost to Gov. Brian Kemp, R., with some staffers telling the outlet that they were struggling to even make rent on time.
"People have told me they have no idea how they’re going to pay their rent in January," one former staffer told Axios. "It was more than unfortunate. It was messed up."
Axios reported that "money became so tight that most of the 180 full-time staffers were given an abrupt paycheck cutoff date — just a week after the November election."
Another former Abrams staffer told Axios that they were banking on some portion of the $100 million campaign treasury being able to pay their salaries, saying, "I figured, $100 million? They should be able to pay me until December."
But even that eyepopping fundraising amount wasn’t enough to keep the Abrams campaign from going into debt. Campaign manager Lauren Groh-Wargo confirmed to Axios that it still owes more than $1 million to vendors. She blamed "negative press and negative polling" for causing fundraising to dry up in the final months of the campaign.
"We did not just lose, we got blown out," Groh-Wargo said. "It was the most sub-optimal situation to be in. And we will be dealing with that situation for some time."
She stipulated the campaign provided insurance benefits through November and worked to place affected staffers in other jobs after the race. Although the rematch of their 2018 campaign received national attention and favorable press for Abrams, Kemp led Abrams in polling throughout the race and cruised to victory.
The report led to Abrams and her team getting heat on Twitter.
"She raised more than $100 million and still managed to end up in debt - after losing by 7.5 points!" RealClearPolitics president Tom Bevan tweeted.
Tumblr media
Axios reporter Lachlan Markay summed up Abrams campaign’s money troubles on Twitter: "Stacey Abrams' lavishly funded campaign ended in serious debt and quickly cut off paychecks to staffers."
National Journal's Matt Holt argued that Axios was engaging in "remarkable spin… considering they raised more than $100 million."
Officials for losing Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker claimed to Axios that they would pay campaign staff through December.
"Gov. Brian Kemp’s campaign staff was paid through November, plus bonuses. Staff for both Herschel Walker and Sen. Raphael Warnock are being paid through December — all according to campaign officials," Axios reported.
Abrams has not tweeted from her official account in almost a week, sharing on Dec. 14 that she is "teaming up to produce a music documentary for Discovery+" with pop star Selena Gomez.

The Great Hunterdon Rubber Ducky Race
Tumblr media
For 35 years, the Clinton Sunrise Rotary Club in Clinton, New Jersey, holds a popular fundraiser for the benefit of a chosen charitable institution. The Great Hunterdon Rubber Ducky Race, features hundreds of yellow rubber ducks “racing” along the Raritan River, and it is anticipated by the community.
On July 14, 2024, the Clinton Sunrise Rotary Club successfully held the 35th edition of the Rubber Ducky Race. At the event, spectators sponsor ducks for $10.00 each. In return for their sponsorship, the sponsors received duck hats, beads, and shirts, adding color to the event. “Baby ducks” were also sold around the vicinity of the race. The money raised through this fundraiser went entirely to the Rotary Club’s chosen charity.
The participating rubber ducks started at the south side of the Raritan River near the Hunterdon Art Museum. The first 16 ducks to cross the finish line each earned a prize for their sponsor. The sponsors of the first and second place finishers received $1,000 and $500 travel vouchers, respectively, from Mary Beth Sullivan-Cruise Planners World Traveler Vacations. The sponsor of the third place finisher received a $450-value gift basket courtesy of the Clinton Guild. The sponsor of the last duck to cross the finish line also received a prize. In addition to the Last Duck Trophy, the sponsor received a $100 gift certificate from the Gansfuss Insurance Agency.

Chanel Spring 2022 Couture
Close your eyes, you're 63, a man, wearing $4000 calf skin formals and most probably an Armani suit, you're a mid level investor in Vogue Paris. Fashion shows aren't really your thing, but when you retired with near enough a billion in the bank from the post-crash-cash bubble, you needed to start putting it somewhere. Alas, your trendy friend Tim (who you’re sure was always into you) says that Fashion magazines are a solid investment and come with some nice benefits, “supermodel boat parties, need I say more *nudge*”. So, you listen to Tim and stick 30 mil into Condé Nast stock - cause hey, if the fashion stuff doesn't work you've got The New Yorker to fall back on.
Once or twice a year; to keep on top of the ever-changing clothing business that you rely on for cruise money but have very little interest in; you'll go to visit a Runway Show. Usually something that Tim recommends but this year your wife suggests the Chanel show, she read in the paper that Chanel is “the only brand that truly cares for capital C Culture anymore”. The show is in the afternoon on a Tuesday, little traffic and you wanted to visit an old school friend in Lyons anyway so you though “why not”.
You arrive to Grand Palais or one of the other big halls there are in central Paris; the driver that took you from the airport didn't mention it either. A woman in her late twenties, early thirties wearing a Vogue Paris lanyard greets you at the car, she looks very flushed, sweaty almost and calmly rushes you to your seat inside; she knows you by name. You're in the second row, right on the corner, a man wearing a strange hat in front of you blocks the majority of your view; you never saw yourself as short, just not very tall that's all, “nothing to be ashamed about” you think.
The lights dim, a man wearing a sparkly jacket and no socks plays a strange quasi xylophone made from metal straws, it’s hard to tell whether he's good at it; there's not much to compare to. Out comes the first look, an elegant woman riding a rather large horse, you haven't seen that before, “better than just walking I guess” you think. It trots around the first corner, gliding, what a beautiful horse; you wonder whether it’s one of Claude’s (a Parisian horse dealer you purchased two mare’s from for your daughters’ 8th and 12th birthday). You watch intently as the steed turns the corner to face you; the music picks up now. The shiny jacket man starts really going for it, throwing his arms left and right hitting any silver straw he can manage but whoops, he slips, hits a stray C#, the note rings into the air like silverware dropping in a fine dining hall. Heads turn and concentration is lost: the horse spooks. The stallion leaps in the air in shock, hooves leave the floor one by one - it is airborne. Each metal plated foot soaring in a flight-plan with a trajectory to the middle of your forehead, you've no time to react, you're still thinking about why the music man decided to go sock-less when BANG! You're head is taken clean off, a total decapitation, bare neck, a horses shoe for a necklace. Your well groomed but withered looking head rolls into the lap of a pair of tweed jodhpurs, the fallen rider. Your friend in Lyon won't be collecting you from the train station.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another season of Chanel Couture means another season of a Chanel Couture show split into two halves:
1st Half: Tweed suits for ladies to buy at the airport on their way to the Cap Ferrat Boat-Auction-Racing-Horse-Charity-Fundraiser-Ball-Club Dinner Party as they forgot their purple two piece at the Cinque Terre house. And anyway, this one has a different pocket trimming than last season.
2nd Half: Virginie getting through the last 20 looks after exhausting herself redesigning her 300th tweed suit (it’s in the contract). This year she went for a mix of Molly Goddard and Hedi (when Hedi was in his cutesy era circa like 2014 SLP), and with the megsuperstarprincess esque eye shadow, the whole polished Slimane grunge aesthetic really politely peaks through.
Exhibit A:
Tumblr media
Honestly a totally gorgeous dress: down the yellow brick road to a sexy feathery tin-woman. The cog-like sequins that embezzle the one-strapper turning and working with each other to dazzle the audience, oh yeh! I like to think that the rest of the ostrich that the skirt is made out of is hiding up under the dress so that Chanel can get around the new fur laws without plucking the poor guy.
Tumblr media
If you know me, you don't, I capital L-O-V-E, LOVE a bridal look: if there's no bridal look, its RTW, case closed. The model is mesmerising, a true beauty and without her this dress would be a miss for me; however the flowers and the bowey headpiece can stay. I just hope to G-d those black toes are lightly quilted.
Say no more.

Fashion in the time of COVID
Tumblr media
WILL THE PANDEMIC LEAD TO A MORE ETHICAL, SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY?
"We went way too far. Our reckless actions have burned the house we live in. We conceived of ourselves as separated from nature, we felt cunning and almighty. We usurped nature, we dominated and wounded it."
Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of Gucci
Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele posted 1,200 words of poetic, impassioned diary excerpts on Instagram, making one thing abundantly clear, Gucci, and possibly the fashion industry as a whole would never be the same again.
The COVID-19 pandemic hit the fashion world hard, gravely impacting all of its global capitals. Even before the virus struck, the industry was ailing. What happens now that no one's compelled to dress up from the waist down? And with our precarious place in the world coming into sharp relief, shopping for season “must-haves” seemed not only frivolous but immoral.
In March, Vogue partnered with the Council of Fashion Designers of America to set up A Common Thread, a pandemic-relief initiative that has raised $4.9 million to date. By May, more than 1,000 companies applied for aid, with even the biggest names on the precipice of an uncertain future.
In the interest of damage control, there has been industry talk of pushing the unreleased 2020 collections to 2021. It's curious that this requires we literally disavow the concept of fashion itself; that amorphous behemoth that tells us whether midi skirts are in or out this season.
With no end in sight to this state of flux, could this be an opportunity for the industry to ask itself some serious existential questions?
THE PROBLEM WITH FASHION
"We didn't respect the planet until now and in a way this [pandemic] is a message and unfortunately it's a very, very heavy message. Change had to be done. Everyone thought that the change would happen gradually, but that's not the case. Change has to be done now, and done quickly."
Sara Maino, Deputy Editor in Chief of Vogue Italia
Before the fashion world spiralled out of control, you had four seasons in the four major fashion capitals - London, Paris, New York and Milan. But the emergence of fast fashion accelerated the situation to a dizzying degree. Brands were sucked into the vortex of insatiable consumer demand. The pressure on luxury and high-street alike to drop new trends at higher speeds and lower costs had designers in a hamster wheel trying to outpace the copycats. "We were out of breath", admits Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, referring to fashion's unrelenting schedule of up to eight collections per year.
In her book, 'Fashionopolis: The Price Of Fast Fashion And The Future Of Clothes', Dana Thomas takes an unflinching look at the catastrophic environmental and human cost of this obsession with newness. Fast fashion refers to the production of masses of cheap, trendy clothes at breakneck speeds. Thomas refers to this as "a dirty, unscrupulous business that exploited humans and Earth alike".
Fashion is one of our biggest global polluters, "responsible for nearly 20 per cent of all industrial pollution annually" and "10 per cent of the carbon emissions in our air". Deep down, we knew our clothes often were made by desperate people in unthinkably dire situations; how could we forget the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh that took the lives of more than a thousand factory workers? Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic has made the human cost of fast fashion devastatingly clear. Crowded, unhygienic environments coupled with exploitative employment and a shady supply chain left brands with no accountability and employees with no pay.
According to Thomas, we buy five times more clothes than the previous generation, with the average garment being worn only seven times before being thrown on the scrap heap. There's no escaping the pangs of guilt that many of us experience with these suspiciously cheap garments. However, there is also no denying that slow fashion can be prohibitively expensive.
Should caring about the environment be a privilege afforded only to the haves, with the blame being placed squarely on the have-nots? And should the onus fall on the consumer to fix the deep-seated problems in the fashion industry or should corporations take responsibility for their exploitative behaviour?
THE SEASON OF DISCONTENT
"At a certain level, most of us were forced to make what the industry told us to make, but it's already proven that the industry is broken. We will now concentrate more on making what we want to make and how we want to make it."
Sonia Carrasco, Fashion Designer and Brand Owner
There are calls for reform, with designer Dries Van Noten urging leading industry figures to sign an open letter setting out some demands. Van Noten wants to reduce the number of runway shows, and the preposterous volume of clothing produced, and sell collections in real-time. That is: bikinis in S/S and coats in A/W. Have you ever been shopping for summer staples, only to find all the season's rejects already relegated to the sales rack? Fashion moves at its own pace darling, a pace at odds with customers' needs. Van Noten says this is about making collections "more environmentally and socially sustainable" with a move towards sustainability throughout the supply chain with less product, less waste and less travel.
Not that Chanel is paying attention, taking customers and press to Capri for its Cruise 2021 pre-collection in June, in the midst of the COVID pandemic. The French fashion house is resolutely old guard, announcing it will stick to six shows: two ready-to-wear, two couture, as well as cruise and Métiers d'Art. Chanel is not alone, with Dior also showcasing its cruise collection physically in Southern Italy.
In response to COVID-19, the British Fashion Council and the Council of Fashion Designers of America released a joint statement, echoing many of Van Noten's concerns. It urges brands, designers and retailers to slow down, with appeals for changes that will benefit customers, improve the wellbeing of the industry and have a positive effect on the environment.
FASHION IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC
"I try to ask myself what is the meaning of my actions. It's a vital and urgent questioning for me, which demands a careful pause and a delicate listening."
Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of Gucci
The big players in luxury fashion produce between six and eight collections per year, spending an eye-watering amount of money on each show. But is fashion week, with all its excesses and spectacles, gone for good?
The pandemic has led to a cascade of reflection and introspection, and fashion's big players were not unaffected. Saint Laurent announced plans to '"take control of its pace and reshape its schedule". Alessandro Michele has reduced the number of Gucci shows from five to two, nixing both seasons and gender. He writes: "I will abandon the worn-out ritual of seasonalities and shows to regain a new cadence, closer to my expressive call. We will meet just twice a year, to share the chapters of a new story".
After the cancelling of June's men's fashion week in Paris, Louis Vuitton disregarded both the industry's European home-base and its calendar, taking its latest men's show to Shanghai, a big change that signals a significant move towards a consumer-first approach. Which makes perfect sense with shoppers from Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America accounting for the bulk of luxury sales. Is it time to admit that Eurocentric fashion shows are so last season?
Many brands have gone "phygital", which is the somewhat awkward portmanteau describing the hybrid of physical space and digital technologies. With Shanghai and Moscow both fully embracing digital for their fashion weeks in March and April, and Helsinki adopting a purely digital format with innovations such as 3D shows. If more fashion houses go off-piste with localised, digitally amplified events, this could be the death knell for fashion week as we know it.
Another big IRL fashion event on the calendar is the Met Gala, an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City, and the most-watched fashion/society event of the year. It's usually an occasion for a (very) select few to dress-up in response to the year's theme, in a grand display of fashion as art, with the results ranging from the sublime to the ludicrous. This year it was postponed.
The show must go on, as they say, and it was a group of Gen-Z internet kids known as High Fashion Twitter (or 'hf twitter', because they're too cool for CAPS) hosting the biggest fashion party of the year. On May 4th, instead of the exclusive, highly branded, extremely profitable, marketing opportunity the Met Gala has become, hf twitter brought us an inclusive online celebration of self-expression and diversity. Whether dressing themselves, collaging or using other visual means, the guests shared their 'looks' on Twitter with the hashtag #HFMetGala2020, taking fashion out of the hands of the establishment, if only for a day.
High Fashion Twitter is a loosely structured mix of fashion fans and aficionados, who share inspiration and knowledge while being vocal about industry issues such as representation, sustainability and accountability. And for the event, they purposefully excluded any brands they deemed problematic, such as those known for cultural appropriation.
FASHION AND SOCIETY
"I understand that, for many, the purpose of a fashion magazine is about escapism, about providing beautiful images of beautiful people in beautiful clothes […] But there are moments when this feels weird. And this is one of those moments."
Emanuele Farneti, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia
The effects of a global disaster of this magnitude amplified many social justice issues, notably resulting in the backlash over tone-deaf comments from fashion brands about the Black Lives Matter Movement, or their conspicuous, deafening silence. There was nowhere for the industry to hide.
While taking any political stance wasn't de rigueur for most major fashion houses, it's now not only accepted but expected to be in touch with issues facing the wider community. In fact, for some, this out-of-touchness is seen as impossibly callous in a world confronted by human tragedy and economic devastation.
There have been attempts to meet the moment, with efforts such as Vogue's new web series "Good Morning Vogue", fashion's self-proclaimed "wake up call". If the last decade has shifted the discourse around issues such as racism and climate change, then the global pandemic has accelerated it.
FASHION GOING FORWARD
"Through the creation of less product, with higher levels of creativity and quality, products will be valued and their shelf life will increase. The focus on creativity and quality of products, reduction in travel and focus on sustainability […] will increase the consumer's respect and ultimately their greater enjoyment in the products that we create."
The British Fashion Council
Driven by a new generation of socially and environmentally conscious consumers who care where the things they buy come from and where they'll end up, brands have upped their sustainability game. And with the threat of this pandemic acting as a call to action for the fashion industry to slow down and scale down before we find our selves facing a much bigger existential threat.
COVID-19 has caused a significant shift in the mindsets of both brand and consumer, teaching us all to slow down and reset. And should this pass, the things we learnt to value, such as our health, our freedom and hopefully our planet, may eclipse our desire for any conveyor belt of trends.

2018 VoicePlay winter wrap-up — conclusions, adventures, and fortifications
The guys started the year by recharging from the rush of the holiday season, releasing more of the previous year's music, and working on some personal projects before they hit the road again.
.
Hot and cold
First up was J.None's feature on ATK's single "Guilty" on New Year's Day, followed the next day by VoicePlay's "Waving Through A Window" collaboration with Kurt Hugo Schneider that they'd filmed in October, and a fun animated version of "Happy Birthday" for their fans a couple days after that. J also completed filming for his nephew's first music video with some help from family and friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Amid the celebrations, though, they also lamented that Florida was experiencing some actual winter weather that their homes weren't built for.
Tumblr media
.
Luckily, they had an escape planned, in the form of a quick cruise to the Bahamas aboard the familiar Disney Dream. J.None livestreamed part of their drive to the ship, and recorded a short Instagram video in the port.
Tumblr media
.
Business and pleasure
Once they were back home, they announced the release of their "Look What You Made Me Do" video with pocket.watch, then headed even farther north for their annual trip to the Association of Performing Arts Professionals conference in NYC. During a day of showcase concerts, they spent some backstage time with the Plain White T's and singer/songwriter Eric Hutchinson. Once they were done, they met up with their fellow Floridians in Vox Audio and The Edge Effect for some hang time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
The conference seems to have paid off in interesting ways, since it led to this vague Twitter conversation:

While the other guys tended to things at home, J.None headed to Los Angeles as part of the workshop week for Disney's new touring group DCappella, under the musical direction of Deke Sharon.
The first wave cast that emerged from this process was Morgan (soprano), Shelley (mezzo), Sojourner (alto), RJ (tenor), Orlando (baritone), Joe (bass), and Antonio (percussion). That lineup was featured in music videos and live shows.
J.None was chosen to sing baritone in the second wave cast, which ultimately didn't end up touring, but those members were still featured on some of the group's audio recordings, and some later cycled into the touring cast as the original members retired.

Meanwhile, Layne and Tony finished up PattyCake's long awaited "Grande Mermaid" video and released it into the wild, then got to work filming their next project, "The Disney Showman".
.
Hey there, cats and kittens
Once J.None was back on the East Coast, VoicePlay spent a Saturday morning entertaining animal medicine professionals as part of the opening day of the annual Vetinary Meeting & Expo. They even met fellow animal lover Michael J. Fox, who spoke about the emotional benefits of pets to his quality of life as a disabled person.
Tumblr media
It's unclear whether the guys got to spend any time with the animals that were on site for hands-on educational sessions, or the pets attendees had brought with them to participate in a 5K fundraiser fun-run. At least most of them got to go home to their own furry friends afterward.
.
Southwest adventures
The next weekend, VoicePlay headed west. Their show in Oakland, CA was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict at the venue, but they still had a grand time in Tempe, AZ and Las Vegas. Especially since they got to see several Patreon patrons in person. (And some fans continued the tradition of gifting them with snacks.)

Back to the grind
The following weekend was bookended by business time. After facing disappointment at a restaurant on Friday, they played it safe for their weekly planning meeting on Monday by gathering at Casa Lucci.

Positive vibes
J.None spent the Presidents' Day holiday filming an anti-bullying music video with Alexis Taylor Kritsky, his big sister and nephew, a local activist, and a group of volunteers.
.
The next day, DCINY announced the featured singers for their annual Total Vocal a cappella concert, including VoicePlay.

While that was happening, the PattyCake guys teamed up with their old friends at Entertainment Central Productions to film a fun video for their grown-up girl group, 4Eva29.

Oh no, Mister Bill Earl!
February ended with a little more excitement than expected when Earl wound up in the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. But through a combination of his otherwise good health, stubbornness, and the wonders of modern surgical techniques, he was back on his feet in just a couple days. The guys didn't even need to postpone their shows at the beginning of March.

Midwest trip
With their tenor on the mend, VoicePlay headed toward the Great Lakes for a loop through central Indiana, western Ohio, and eastern Illinois.

They returned there a year and a half later as part of their 2019 Warm Up holiday tour.

Sing for me!
The PattyCake guys started the next week by filming a Greatest Showman / Phantom of the Opera mashup video with classical singer Fernando Varela. They recruited Leah Lowman from their rotating "Unexpected Musicals" cast to play Christine, and Tony dusted off his mask and cape to cameo as the lurking Phantom.
.
A couple days later, Layne lent a hand — and his home studio's equipment — to one of his girls and her friends to record a song for a video project they entered into a student film contest at their school. (And they won!)
.
When the weekend rolled around, VoicePlay headed over to the Gulf Coast for a show in Tarpon Springs.

In the middle of the week, the guys gathered at Rayne's Room to get nostagic with a new "Aca Top 10" countdown featuring the cartoon themes of their childhoods.

They spent the next day performing at a private outdoor event in Palm Beach (and communing with some of the local wildlife).

Big Apple time
In advance of the Total Vocal show, Layne and Cyndi took their older girls and Layne's parents to NYC for a couple days of spring break family time, seeing the sights and a couple Broadway shows.
The rest of VoicePlay flew up on Friday to rehearse for the concert on Saturday and perform on Sunday. A grand time was had by all as they reunited with Deke Sharon and other aca-friends from DCappella and Vocalosity, and met new friends from Pentatonix and the Pitch Perfect movies.
.
Work, work
After flying home and getting a little rest, it was time to get back to business, planning their video projects for the coming months.

.
From four to five once more
VoicePlay capped off the season by finally formally welcoming J.None to their permanent ranks.
Since J had started appearing at concerts even before Tony officially left, had guested in four music videos before they stopped crediting him as a featured singer, and was included as a member of the group on the liner notes for their new holiday album, this was more of a confirmation than an announcement, but it was a very welcome one.

DEI Cruise-In to Benefit Avon Lake’s Newest K9 Officer
Tumblr media
AVON LAKE, OHIO -The dog days of summer are a great time for a car show—especially one that benefits a special K9 officer. Design Engineering, Inc. will host its annual DEI Cruise-In on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, across the street from its company headquarters in Avon Lake, Ohio. Along with some of the area’s greatest classic-and-specialty vehicles, plus food, music and family fun, the event will serve as a special fundraiser for an important animal: new Avon Lake K9 officer Lex. Another exciting feature of the DEI Cruise-In will be Lex performing some training exercises as well as a ceremony to present him with his official officer's badge. “We’re thrilled that our annual Cruise-In, which was started back in 2016, will continue to celebrate our great community and benefit a worthy cause at the same time,” said Steve Garrett of DEI. “This year we’ll be asking for a $10 donation per vehicle to help pay for training and safety equipment for Lex.” “The City of Avon Lake looks forward to the DEI Cruise in every summer,” said Ted Esborn, Community Development Director. “It is a great event not just for car enthusiasts but for the whole family.” Spectators are free to enter and view some of the hottest cars, trucks, SUVs, race cars, motorcycles and classic vehicles around, while enjoying music, events, vendors and a police K9 demonstration featuring Lex. The first 300 participants will receive a free commemorative gift. “We are grateful to DEI for putting on this event that brings people into our community and provides a fun-filled day for our residents,” Esborn said. Funds raised at the Cruise-In will go toward purchasing a kennel, a K9 trauma kit/bag, a bite suit, training aids and a vest. The Cruise-In runs from 4-8 p.m. at the Weiss Baseball Fields, 33401 Webber Road. For event updates, visit facebook.com/DEIcruisein. Read the full article

Come one, come all!     To the Annual Policeman’s Benefit of Westport, GA.
This year our annual charity event is being upgraded from the overused city hall accommodations in an effort to drum up both more intrigue and a rather sizable turn out compared to prior years. Sponsored by the town council and a couple well meaning philanthropists, illustrating how everyone’s tax dollars are truly being spent, the concept for this year’s fundraiser is that bigger truly is better. Hosted on a rented cruise liner for a full weekend, the ship will travel up and down the coast while housing various citizens from Westport who reserved themselves a space ahead of time.
Despite efforts to drastically alter the yearly traditions, certain aspects of Westport’s events never actually change. Per usual, the Annual Policeman’s Benefit is done to show the town’s gratitude for their protectors in blue and to raise money for new equipment, software, and vehicles so that they might continue to keep Westport safe. However, this charity drive is particularly controversial due to Alexis Hawthorne’s murder and ongoing investigation. Residents find themselves with mixed opinions on even hosting such a lavish fundraiser when the perpetrator still walks free and the pursuit of bringing them to justice remains slow moving.
Though as is human and gluttonous nature, these concerns are forgotten rather quickly upon boarding the cruise liner and being informed of the various amenities awaiting their use. The ship is essentially a five star floating hotel, impeccably clean from bow to stern and astonishing in its service. The decorations are nothing new to fawn over, but the various activities and room accommodations are definitely enough to take pause with an agape mouth. Everyone’s home for the weekend includes a private room, with one or two beds depending upon your booking and who is with you, and room service on call. There is an outdoor pool and hot tub combination with a swim up bar, a water slide, a black lit indoor karaoke bar, a 3D theater, a spa, exquisite dining, and so much more.
The extravagant features might just be enough to quell everyone’s concerns over hosting the controversial event; perhaps people will even forget that a murderer still walks in their midst.
Citizens, please enjoy your stay aboard the ship and always check behind you before leaning over the guard rails...
After all, every deadly confrontation started with just a little push.
Here it is! Our first big event since the music festival and we hope you all enjoy it! Please don’t be bashful and make sure you’re reaching out to your fellow residents of Westport so that you have plenty to do while aboard the ship. Obviously we are in charge of plot drops and keeping it moving, but we always want to make sure that IC drama is flowing. IC event dates: Friday morning July 13th - Sunday evening July 15th. OOC event dates: Thursday July 12th at 5pm EST - Monday July 16th.
Please tag all starters with wrp.cruise to keep things organized and have a blast!!
