Riflessioni sulle ferie Le società capitalistiche prima riducono in povertà una marea di persone e poi incaricano i sociologi ed i professori di statistica di fare delle ricerche sulla povertà ed è così che si scopre che i poveri in genere non hanno molti soldi, sono numerosi, sono di solito poco istruiti, anche se non sempre, provengono in genere dalle zone povere del territorio e così via dicendo, spendono poco, vanno poco a teatro, non vanno in ferie, sono volgari, si lavano poco, e chi più ne ha, più ne metta. 'I’ve just read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I enjoyed it but it is quite complex on several different levels. It has been quoted as being based on the fact that Elizabeth Taylor married several times, but the basic thread is that the heroine is gay, so that several of her marriages were to gay men so that both partners in these  marriages could have secret gay relationships. There were other threads, the heroine becomes an acclaimed film star and there is quite a lot about the film world.’

Alexander Muruo – Good Health

Project Description

Research suggests feeling ‘average’ has become the new norm for a huge proportion of the country. The pace of modern life contributes to all sorts of health issues, amplified by the ongoing effects of COVID-19. Working with agency Hello we created a campaign for "GoodHealth" that holds up a mirror to our daily lives and demonstrates the stresses many of us are under. This is a montage of moments from the campaign.

Kristin and Lucy sought a wedding stationery suite that captured their unique story in a non-traditional way. As a couple who value experiences and moments, I identified the theme of international living and travel, brought to life through memories made along the way.

The suite was executed through formats that connected to their lives. With passions and professions in print and design, the visual language and illustrations communicated key milestones in their relationship. Enhancing a minimalist yet detailed approach, technical print production played an essential role in the suite.

Biography

Becca Aiken is a New Zealand illustrator, designer, and brand developer living and creating in Christchurch, NZ. She is inspired by my surroundings and has worked with a range of different clients from personal commissions to larger corporate bespoke pieces. Aiken currently works as a Senior Brand Manager at Giesen Group Limited.

Ben Galbraith – Neptunes Pizzeria

Project Description

Founded in 2020 Neptunes pizzeria is a family run business based in Gisborne, New Zealand. Leah and her team source the best local produce and hand make everything from scratch - this provided a great opportunity to create a bold, crafted and memorable icon, which stands out from the fast food franchises further up the street. Positioned within casting distance from the Fishing Port, the brand takes on a nautical theme with a colour palette inspired by the east coast. The identity centres around a hand drawn Neptune icon rising from the waters of the East Coast with a slice of pizza speared onto his trident. By going against the current Neptunes Pizzeria has developed a cult following of their legendary pizza!

Biography

Ben Galbraith is a designer with over 15 years’ experience. He’s worked for some of the top design studios in the UK, Australia and Singapore. His strength is in storytelling, adding personality, humour, and creating brands that stand out. He loves building new brands from the ground up or helping established brands win new markets and increase sales.

Chris Flack was born and raised in Dunedin. During his first year at Otago University he saw a flyer for a graphic design course at the Design & Arts College in Christchurch. This course also offered a scholarship, so he applied and got it. He is currently a design director at Strategy, an independent, strategy, branding and product company, with offices in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.

"No, we're not going to discuss him and friend is far from what he is, you saw that." The very last thing she wanted to think or talk about was Barlowe because now she was faced with wondering just how much of a fool she'd made herself out to be tonight, to women he'd slept with and she'd been an oblivious, pretty little idiot. "I know the world you live in Angelo.. I don't need the introduction to it, I'm very aware who you are... but did you stop and think who I am to be brought here?" her hand rest over her heart, her brows pulling into a concern. "I'm just a bakery girl Angelo, I'm not..." she gestured back to that grand hall. "I'm not cut out for that kind of... of.." she was getting nervy, that little repetition the pre warning that her stutter would start to come out with her frustrations.

"Your world is dangerous, that much I know for fact." How could she not? Ben was shot just one street away from her home, he was shot and he bled out and it was Eden there screaming for help, it was her with blood on her hands and she'd never done anything so yes, she was well aware of his world and how you had to be. That's why she'd got smart with Adelaide. It's why she shuffled behind Angelo when Barlowe came near. "I think bringing me here is painting a target on my back Angelo, and I'm not talking about Barlowe I am talking about Adelaide.." she pressed her lips together. "She is more than I can compete with and if she decides to tear me to shreds? What would I do? She'd do that, just to get back at you and then what, where does that leave me?" Eden paused, waited and then dared to ask. "Is that the only reason? You think I'm not aware of the world you live in? To.. what remind me you're not good, to scare me or something?"

She didn't mean to get upset. Eden didn't mean to hear the way he spoke about Adelaide and let it bother her but all she could think about, when he had hold of her chin and made her look up at him, was that he was going to talk about her that way, maybe he already thought it. Maybe she shamefully thought that.. bringing her here was more than just showing off his new toy. She wasn't a fighter, she didn't like to argue and she wasn't tipsy enough to let her mouth start running off yet. Actually, maybe more champagne would help her not think about it so much. "I'm..." she sighed softly. "Sorry, I think I'm just a bit overwhelmed by it all. I'm not used to this kind of.. thing. I'll go freshen up, get another drink, might feel better with everything then."

Part of her brain made her let it go, she had to.. she could still remember being a little girl, her hand gripped like a vice by her Father, pulled through events like this, men in suits that stank of cologne, women that clinked glasses and fake laughter. She had to be good. Eden had to behave because somewhere in the back of her her brain a child's voice screamed at her that she kept quiet, she behaved, she had to be good, or she'd be in trouble. "Sorry." her voice was smaller, more timid. "I'll be quick."

Eden hadn't been gone too long yet, but long enough that of course some other talker found Angelo outside. "Long time no see Angelo!" chimed in Hale Galbraith. His Father was old money, dirty money, mafia money and he sat as the prince of it all happily living an expensive and flamboyant lifestyle. That explained the gold rimmed martini in his hand. Now that he was outside he loosened his bowtie. "How goes business Angelo? You're clearly doing something right. Fancy telling me your secrets with that?" right now he was asking respectfully but he'd pry, see he was good at that. That was Hale's one resounding talent, he could get blood from a stone when it came to talking.. he made for a fantastic negotiator and that was an asset to his Father. He wiggled his way in by finding secrets, secrets he could trade in, bargain information between foes. He was especially good with smooth talking women

At that moment, Adelaide recognized that this woman was far from foolish or innocent. Through her sharp comebacks and subtle yet direct body language, Eden made it clear that she noticed Adelaide's disdain towards her. However, Adelaide's attempt to provoke the young woman had backfired, causing her to feel nothing but distaste and dislike towards Eden, especially as she observed the affectionate way Eden treated Angelo. Moreover, Angelo's sharp gaze from the outset indicated his stance. If his previous words to Adelaide hadn't made it clear that their affair had ended, he had no qualms about reminding her. Adelaide's jaw tightened as she noticed Eden's fingers intertwining with his own, and how Angelo seemed so open to her advances and receptive to her affections. Her gaze subtly narrowed once more, indicating her disdain.

In Angelo's mind, this woman was clearly foolish; pretending to possess someone when they weren't truly hers. He felt amused and pleased with Eden's reactions to Adelaide's attempts at belittling her, which he himself had noticed. He was well aware of Adelaide's tactics, her mannerisms, and how she pretended to be pleased with something when she wasn't, and how she would make sure to express her discontent one way or another. Angelo found satisfaction in the way Eden seemed to handle herself confidently despite Adelaide's provocations. When Eden addressed him with affection, his head turned towards her, and he decided to play along so they could be freed from Adelaide's grasp. "Of course, my dear," he smiled at her, then turned to Adelaide. "I hope you enjoy the rest of the evening, Adelaide," he said, not bothering to pretend he was pleased to see her because clearly, he wasn't.

Adelaide cast a glaring look at Eden the moment she made such a comment, before silently turning and heading toward her husband. Meanwhile, Angelo made his way outside to the gardens beside Eden. He frowned at her question, then turned to face her as he pulled out a box of cigarettes, extracting a stick. He presumed that this was clearly about her encounter with Adelaide. "We're not going to discuss your friend from earlier, are we?" He pulled out a lighter and ignited the end of the cigarette, keeping his gaze fixed on her as he began inhaling the smoke, then let it out slowly through his nostrils. He didn't need explanations, but if the man was trouble, he needed to know to ensure he wouldn't be near her. "Eden, I believe you don't need the answer to that, but I'll give it to you if it makes you feel better." He held the cigarette between slim, long fingers, the same ones that have been inside her. Deliciously.

"I need you to understand the world I'm involved in, and you should be aware that I'm not exactly a good man, especially since you asked me for money," Angelo stated bluntly, making no attempt to hide his true nature. He knew he was perceived as evil, the epitome of a devil to many people, especially those who had borrowed money from him. "I'm not a Samaritan. I do lend money, and I give people ample time to repay me, but that money is meant to come back to me. If it doesn't, then unfortunately, I must act accordingly." He pursed his lips briefly, raised his brows at her, then took another drag of the cigarette. "If that woman made you uncomfortable, then I apologize dearly. Adelaide's a fucking bitch. Did I fuck her? Yes, plenty of times. Enough that I got tired. She's got a boring husband, and she needed a good fuck, that's all. No strings attached. She's obsessed with me, but I'm not obsessed with her." He shrugged his shoulders and then let out a laugh at the thought of it. God, he found it amusing when women like Adelaide were desperate to have affairs. "I had my fun with her, that's in the past. If she tries anything with you or with me, then I'll send her a good warning." He took a step forward, reaching for Eden's chin to grab it gently with his free hand. "Come on, babygirl. You shouldn't be jealous of that old slut. Leave her be."

Zseniális bűnözők és briliáns nyomozók

Idén tavasszal a GABO Kiadó lebilincselő krimiket és tényirodalmat hozott az izgalomra vágyó olvasóközönségnek. Az írók között olyan nagy neveket találunk, mint Maurice Leblanc és Robert Galbraith, miközben Richard Neville és Julie Clarke, kissé megkésve, most válhat elismertté Magyarországon.

Haladjunk a könyvek keletkezési időrendje szerint, így az első a Netflixen világsikerré vált Lupin sorozat alapjául szolgáló novellagyűjtemény. Az író, Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc 1864. december 11-én született, és már életében Arthur Conan Doyle francia párjának tekintették munkásságát.

Az általa alkotott különc karakter, Arsène Lupin egy úri csirkefogó, az álcázás mestere és ravasz szélhámos, akinek történetei eleinte a Je sais tout folyóiratban, majd 24 önálló kötetben jelentek meg 1905-35 között. Nem lehet elmenni a mellett a tény mellett, hogy Doyle Sherlock Holmes történeteivel egy időben íródtak Lupin kalandjai, sőt kifejezetten főszerkesztői kérés volt a hasonlóság létrehozása. Érezhető, hogy Leblancra jelentős hatással voltak az angol nyomozó kalandjai. Egy történetben meg is jelenik Sherlock Holmes, majd szerzői jogok miatt a továbbiakban Herlock Sholmes-ként szerepelt.

A párhuzamok ellenére Lupin egy erős, önálló karakterré nőtte ki magát, összetettebb kalandokat él át, nem csak a gazdagoktól lop, hanem börtönbe kerül, majd onnan megszökik, egy másik esetben saját bűnügyét fejti fel, és van, hogy elkapja az őt meglopó tolvajt is.

Több mint száz évvel az első megjelenése után is szórakoztató, Arsène Lupin, az úri betörő  szellemes párbeszédekkel és bonyolult cselszövésekkel teli kalandjai óriási hatást gyakoroltak a krimi zsánerére, és méltán nevezhetők a műfaj klasszikusainak.

Arsène Lupin legjobb történetei közül kilenc most új, modern és teljes fordításban jelennek meg.

1979-ben jelent meg először Richard Clive Neville (1941-2016) amerikai író és az ellenkulturális OZ magazin alapítója és Julie Clarke ausztrál újságíró közös munkája A kígyó (The Serpent), amely a főként nyugati turistákra vadászó sorozatgyilkos, Charles Sobhraj életrajza. Megjelenését követően a tényirodalmi kötet világszerte bestseller lett, és nemrég Sobhraj igaz története alapján a BBC készített minisorozatot amelyet április 2-ától magyarul is láthatunk a Netflixen.

A vietnámi anya és indiai apa gyermekeként született, Franciaországban nevelkedett Charles Sobhraj sehol sem jutott állampolgársághoz, így országról országra, kontinensről kontinensre vándorolva sodródott, miközben rendkívüli intelligenciájának és szexuális vonzerejének köszönhetően egyre több embert vont irányítása alá.

Az ördögien karizmatikus férfi útleveleket hamisított, drogokat és drágaköveket csempészett Ázsia-szerte, többször is rács mögé került, de újra meg újra sikerült megszöknie. Ahogy egyre jobban elmerült a bűnözés világában, áldozatokat is hagyott maga után: nyugati turistákat ölt meg a hetvenes évek Ázsiájának „hippiösvényén”, az utána induló nemzetközi embervadászat során pedig az Interpol körözési listájának élére is felkerült.

A legfiatalabb író és a legújabb megjelenés Robert Galbraith ötödik regénye, a Zavaros vér, amely a Cormoran Strike sorozat legújabb kötete. Talán mostanra már köztudott, hogy Robert Galbraith J.K. Rowling, a Harry Potter-sorozat és az Átmeneti üresedés szerzőjének írói álneve. A négy előző Strike-regény, a Kakukkszó, A selyemhernyó, a Gonosz pálya és a Halálos fehér mind az angol és a nemzetközi eladási listák első helyéig jutottak, és a Brontë Film and Televison meg is filmesítette őket.

A legtöbb kritikában Rowling karakterépítését dicséri, mind a háttértörténetek, mind az összetett személyiségek miatt. Cormoran Blue Strike sem mondható hétköznapinak, egy híres rocksztár törvénytelen gyermeke, akivel édesanyja gyerekkorában folyamatosan költözött, majd a brit Királyi Hadi Rendőrség különleges egységének felderítőjeként megjárta az afganisztáni háborút, ahol egy bombatámadás miatt jobb lábát térdtől lefelé elvesztette. Robin Venetia Ellacott pedig a morózus Strike asszisztensének jelentkezik, majd éles eszével, empatikus képességével, nyomozói vénájával és vezetési stílusával hamar Strike munkatársa, a nyomozói iroda partnere lesz. A különböző bonyolult esetek és a gyilkosságok okozta feszültség mellett még kettejük egyáltalán nem egyértelmű kapcsolat miatt is izgulhatnak az olvasók.

A Zavaros vér című új regényben Strike épp a családját látogatja meg Cornwallban, amikor egy nő a segítségét kéri az édesanyja, Margot Bamborough ügyében, aki orvos volt és rejtélyes körülmények között tűnt el, éppen Strike születésének évében, 1974-ben. A doktornő feminista volt, míg korábban nyuszilányként is dolgozott, összetett és bonyolult élete ismétlődik Robin helyzetével, aki éppen egy küzdelmes váláson megy keresztül, nemsokára harminc éves lesz, egy másik férfi is érdeklődik iránta, nem tudja hogyan fogja egyszer veszélyes munkájával összeegyeztetni az anyaságot, miközben a Strike iránt táplált érzéseivel is viaskodik.

Strike sosem nyúlt döglött aktákhoz, főleg nem olyanhoz, amely negyven éve megoldatlan. És bár kevés esélyt lát arra, hogy a végére járhat, mégis elvállalja az ügyet a számos másik mellé.

Strike és Robin nyomozása Margot eltűnése után pokolian bonyolult üggyé alakul, tarot-kártyákkal, egy pszichopata sorozatgyilkossal és megbízhatatlan szemtanúkkal. A gyanúsítottak közé tartozik egy nővé átalakuló beteg, aki komoly érzéseket táplált orvosa iránt, egy passzív-agresszív férj, aki azt akarta, hogy felesége hagyjon fel munkájával és kizárólag anya és háztartásbeli legyen, és egy szadista sorozatgyilkos, akit Rowling valódi életből vett bűnözőkről mintázott. Secondo l’Istat, invece, in Italia un milione e 400 donne sono state vittime di stupro o di tentato stupro. Le denunce oscillano tra il 6 e il 12%. Cambiamo continente: le statistiche dell’Fbi e del Dipartimento di Giustizia Usa raccolte dalla Rainn (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) raccontano che in media su 1000 violenze sessuali solo 230 sono denunciate alla polizia. Di queste solo 46 portano a un arresto e solo 4,6 arrestati vengono condannati. Perché le cose vanno così? Lo spiega in modo mirabile e agghiacciante la miniserie in onda su Netflix Unbelievable (Incredibile), che traduce in immagini un’inchiesta giornalistica pubblicata da ProPublica che nel 2016 ha vinto il premio Pulitzer per il giornalismo investigativo. Gli autori T.Christian Miller e Ken Armstrong nell’inchiesta An unbelievable story of rape (Un’incredibile storia di stupro) ricostruiscono una serie di casi di stupro verificatisi tra il 2008 e il 2010 tra il Colorado e lo Stato di Washington. Il centro dell’attenzione è su quell’unbelievable: una ragazza di 18 anni che denuncia uno stupro a Lynnwood, vicino a Seattle, non viene creduta dai poliziotti al punto da convincerla a ritrattare e a farla condannare per falsa testimonianza «perché ha fatto perdere tempo alla polizia». Marie, questo il nome vero della vittima nella realtà e nella fiction, alla fine troverà il suo riscatto grazie al lavoro di due detective donne a migliaia di chilometri di distanza, in Colorado, Stacy Galbraith e Edna Hendershot, che con ben altra professionalità e sensibilità interrogano le vittime di stupri con caratteristiche simili, trovano delle connessioni e si mettono sulle tracce di un unico colpevole, un ex militare che verrà riconosciuto responsabile di 28 stupri e sarà condannato nel 2011, secondo l’uso americano del fine pena mai, a 372 anni e mezzo di carcere. Tra i trofei delle sue vittime il criminale conserva anche indumenti e foto delle violenze, compresa quella di Marie, che così due anni dopo la sua condanna per falsa testimonianza riuscirà ad ottenere giustizia, un cospicuo risarcimento dallo stato e le scuse imbarazzate di uno dei poliziotti. ...La parte più dura, pornografica, è seguire Marie, sotto shock, che nel giro di 24 ore dallo stupro, viene di nuovo spogliata e fotografata più volte dai medici, poi, completamente da sola, costretta a ripetere infinite volte quello che le è successo a poliziotti maschi che la interrogano senza nessuna empatia. Il contrario di quello che viene mostrato accadere ad un’altra vittima, di cui “si prende cura” la detective Edna Galbraith (nella fiction Karen Duvall) lasciandola parlare senza incalzarla, in un luogo appartato e sicuro. A Marie invece bastano piccole esitazioni per portare gli agenti ad avere un atteggiamento inquisitorio, mentre lei si chiude sempre di più. Abituata a non poter contare sugli altri e soprattutto sugli adulti, la ragazza alza un muro che viene preso a pretesto per mettere in dubbio la sua credibilità. La sua vita emarginata si trasforma in uno stigma che condiziona lo sviluppo dell’indagine....Marie, che ha collaborato alla fiction, l’ha giudicata eccellente. La sua vita ha preso un’altra piega, fa la camionista, è sposata ed ha un figlio. I poliziotti che l’hanno costretta a ritrattare non hanno avuto nessuna punizione. Molti passi avanti anche in Italia sono stati fatti, moltissimo resta da fare, se accade ancora che la Cassazione debba intervenire, come avvenuto quest’anno, per annullare una sentenza che aveva assolto due stupratori perché la vittima era ritenuta troppo brutta, quindi “non stuprabile”. L’altro aspetto su cui riflettere è che il giornalismo, se è buon giornalismo, è ancora un potente agente di cambiamento.
