The Bell Gargoyles are more than they seem
The Bell Gargoyles are probably the first “wall” a lot of players will encounter in Dark Souls - not only the first boss to consist of more than one enemy, but also a boss that ideally will teach you about the importance of not always locking on to one enemy. Took me a few tries to learn that lesson let me tell ya.
Design-wise, there's also interesting stuff going on. Gargoyles are a kind of architectural ornamentation, they're water-spouts designed to lead rain-water away from buildings and protect them from erosion, but they are also grotesques, which is a type of sculpture typically depicting monsters or demons that serve to... either ward evil spirits away from a building, or to frighten the faithful by offering them visions of the devils that await them in Hell should their faith waves. It depends which scholars you ask.
The Gods of Dark Souls absolutely slather themselves in medieval European Christian aesthetics of authority - and so it makes sense that the Bell Gargoyles are designed after architectural features originally invented to protect Christian buildings and assert the power of the Christian faith. They serve Gwyn in that exact same capacity. This is why you encounter them again in Anor Londo, protecting those buildings as well.
It's a clever bit of visual storytelling, I think, one of the things that makes Dark Souls so fascinating to analyze.

RACHEL RANKS: DARK SOULS TRILOGY BOSSES FROM WORST TO BEST
Tumblr media
#26: Bell Gargoyles (Dark Souls)
“The gargoyle, an enchanted creature that guarded the Bell of Awakening in the belfry of the Undead Church.”
The real Dark Souls starts here! The Bell Gargoyles are most likely the first duo fight new players will face in the trilogy, and it's a very solid one. With the Asylum and Taurus demons serving more as tutorials than true bosses, this fight is the first true stumbling block in the DS1 experience. I know multiple people who dropped the game after getting stuck here, and on my first playthrough I was one of them! But after leveling up and finally upgrading a weapon, I was able to take them on in a tough but fair fight. It's not the most special fight in terms of music or move variety, but it's a great test of skill that's undoubtedly one of the most memorable moments of a first playthrough.

Book 7 is comming soon but I’m mentally stuck in Fleur city still… (and I havent started book 6 yet out of cowardice)
So yeah, new lil guy at noble bell college, got carried away and added unnecessary siblings, I really love doing chara design hhhhh
The Nostradamus family comes from a long line of bell founders and are still smelting to this day.
Aimé’s unique magic skill is a bit like Kalim’s. Useful in specific circumstances only, and for Aimé’s it is in smelting. Although he could brobably do like the dwarves did against the dragon in the second hobbit movie…

UB-08 Echo and UB-09 Cling have evolved! Full 'Dex entries and thought process below the cut.
If you're wondering why the first-sighting details are so specific... I'm working on some AU stuff. I'll post the details once I get the info sheet done. But for now, let's just say I missed the train by about 8 years. Better late than never >:3c
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a rough idea of what UB-08 Resonance looked like since I first conceptualized the line years ago, but it was after finalizing Echo's design that this one really came together. The face could easily be adapted to look like both long ears and cool shades, and the cloak transitions nicely into a full-on bell. (Said bell was fairly difficult, being geometric and all, but I think it turned out alright.) I wanted to go for a vibe like ancient and mysterious space tech, in keeping with the alien tropes the Ultra Beasts have in their designs. I imagine it being physically tanky, but mainly using special attacks.

UB-09 Snare's line went through a bunch of iterations, none of which seemed to stick (*rimshot*) until very recently. I knew from the beginning that it was gonna be a sundew. They're just really freaky and cool. Most of my attempts looked way too "alien" for a hypothetical starter, until I added the reptilian alien trope to the mix. I also decided to give it markings that suggest a snazzy space-explorer uniform. And with Naganadel having a bit of Xenomorph vibes in its design, I thought it'd be neat to throw a bit of Predator into one of its counterparts. I'm really happy with the result. It's so satisfying to nail a design that you've been stuck on for a hot minute. Anyway, this one's more of a glass cannon, with good Speed and decent offenses on both sides (leaning towards physical).

"Nice protagonists are boring" Meanwhile, nice protagonists be like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These people be pulling some of the rawest imagery you ever seen one moment and then be sitting down to have a nice chat with you about stupid stuff like snowball fights or something in another.
I mentioned before when talking about Adam that I find confidence one of the most appealing traits a character can have, and one way to enhance this trait even more is by giving it to a kind character.
Confidence + kindness is one of my favorite character combos, and when pulled off well, it leads to some of my favorite types of characters who in turn get some of the coolest moments in a story.
Who's your favorite nice protagonist? 🤔

Imagine Rollo ascending the Bell Tower like any usual school day, to carry out his regular tasks, and on one of those days it's like he encounters a rare spawn event and Malleus is there, talking to the gargoyles.
Giving 0 heed to self-preservation, Rollo shooes Malleus away like he does the bell tower birds the first couple of times he visits, but then eventually he gets used to him being there and ignores his presence.
Sometimes Malleus brings Yuu or one of his guards with him. Yuu he doesn't mind, but Sebek Zigvolt is loud, and Silver keeps falling asleep in inconvenient places while Rollo is trying to clean.
Sometimes Malleus sees that Rollo has had a rough day. If Malleus is being petty, he casually slips the words "Bell of Salvation" and "sins" into a conversation with Rollo, as a small jab to his ego. But when the future heir of Briar Valley is feeling particularly merciful, he reminds Rollo that they, his companions, are here to listen.
Rollo isn't sure if Malleus is including himself in that, and he doesn't want to know. To him, when Malleus is in the Bell Tower, he's just another thing made of stone, for all he cares. At least, that's what he tells himself.
