Let's talk about owning up

It’s easy to blame other people for things that appear to be their fault. I have found that, in reality, I often have played a roll in whatever I’m blaming the other person for. I’ve been trying to look at things in the perspective of “what can I do different next time?”. I can’t control the actions of others, I can only choose how I react to situations.

I find this happens at work often. I often feel I do much more than my coworker in the morning. I’m pretty sure he thinks he does a ton of work. It’s all perspective. Complaining to my boss isn’t really productive (although I have). So instead I wrote out all the cleaning we (meaning I) do in the morning and am going to politely, but firmly state I will do half and he can do the other half.

I identified my problem (I’ve been enabling my coworker by doing all of the cleaning and just expecting him to chip in without actually requesting it), I came up with a solution and now I can stop being so pissy in the morning.

Sometimes we have expectations in our head without actually verbalizing what we want. Often I think “ I shouldn’t have to ask, they should know”. People aren’t mind readers. And yes, some people are lazy. Being mad about it every morning was not doing me any good, so I decided to be a part of the solution and not the problem.

So what does that have to do with self-love?

For me standing up for myself goes hand in hand with feeling confident. Doing it in a way that is respectful and allows me to listen to the other person tends to earn me respect. Sometimes people get defensive and that’s natural. I do it too. Remaining calm and explaining in a different way often solves it and shows me how I’ve come a long way with my communication skills.

Communication skills will take you a long way in life. When you can effectively verbalize hour needs or wants you are more likely to get those things. Often I feel fat people are dismissed. It unfortunately can go hand in hand with the “lazy fat person” stereotype. Or “big, bold, obnoxious” fat person stereotype. Sometimes you have to be loud to be heard, especially when you historically aren’t. I find the less loud I am, however, the more likely I am to be heard.
