I’m gonna take Kipperlilly from some of yall 👀 you can like a villain without trying to clear their name. She objectively is a murderer and a villain this season. It does not make you a “””””bad Person””””” if you like her. You do not have to try and age her down or make her out to be innocent or gentle or sweet or misunderstood. You do not get to use her mental health to excuse her actions either.

At this point, a lot of these post are getting into slippery slope territory, especially concerning mental health. You can be mentally ill and still understand right from wrong. Infantilizing people struggling with their mental health can cause harm. There are mentally ill people that can/will/do go their entire lives without blaming and trying to harm others because of what they’re going through.

Like I feel like we’ve officially hit Joaquin Phoenix Joker levels of ‘we live in a society’ discourse. Yes, there are things that suck and living with mental health issues and having that make your life harder sucks. But then funneling that feeling of unfairness and frustration into harming other people is not okay or justifiable. It’s a clear sign that someone went untreated or their mental health was not taken seriously enough soon enough.

There are a lot of young and impressionable people in the d20 community (a community that is overwhelmingly very supportive and cognizant of mental health) that will see the KLCK discourse and take some of these things to heart. Please be mindful in what you post. She is a fictional character and in context of the story, instead of getting further help or seeking better treatment for her mental health, she chose to harm people. Some responsibility does fall on her in that regard. Not all, but some. There is a point where things get very concerning when you become a danger to yourself or others, Kipperlilly is in that place to be very clear. She needs help.

Yes she is underage, and I do think Jawbone has a heavy responsibility to either reach out to her parents to report her behavior and figure out a treatment plan for her immediately. This never happened, even when she admitted to wanting to kill Kristen. She continued on, untreated and without her rage issues not being fully addressed. Then she murdered someone.

Infantilizing Kipperlilly to absolve her of her wrongdoing isn’t the convo we should be having. Figuring out where she falls on the morality scale does nothing, she’s one of the villains of the season, by that metric, she’s not a great person (not because of her rage disorder, because of her actions.) There are complexities to her. The conversation we should be having is why not a single faculty member or adult that interacted with her and witnessed this behavior didn’t say “woah hey, let’s pump the breaks and get you assessed for a few things and get to the root of what’s going wrong.”

When you see someone struggling, reach out, assess the situation. If you’re an adult and are in a position to help, don’t hesitate to do so or notify a parent or guardian in their life so they get them help. If you’re underage and see a peer struggling, check in and if something sticks out to you as concerning, reach out to an adult that can help or find someone to help. Don’t enable violent or harmful behavior. /Please/ that person can end up hurting themselves or someone else.

Headcanon that macaque keeps opening old wounds literally. He scratches and messes with them making the scars worse and re opening/keeping wounds open. It’s an emotional reflex and he mostly does it when he’s feeling any negative emotions even though it really hurts. The main one being the eye wound from his death. He literally and figuratively can’t heal from that fight and he hates it.

A thoughtful 'looking at a bad Daniel moment' - Cobra Kai Season 3 (and 1)

Okay so this is a small 'this moment is bad' and a lot more 'this moment is lazy.' Overall this is about Miguel talking to Daniel about Johnny's version of events for Karate Kid. This post is mostly about where the Daniel scene (S3 Ep 9) falls flat, but I do need to set the table with the Johnny scene (S1 Ep 8).

Cut for length, not so much for spoilers.

Johnny's side-

I need to start off by saying that, for the purposes of this little talk, Johnny is being sincere about how he saw events in high school. There's room to interpret he's more ashamed of who he was in high school, but it doesn't really mesh with his overall demeanor. Kay?

The one place he is absolutely ashamed and totally without question lying by omission is not mentioning the illegal strike to the knee. Which is cemented as his big regret with 1x10 (how he reacts to everything Aisha, Hawk, and Miguel are doing with the Cobra Kai teaching) and further hammered home in the start of S2 with Kreese back.

Johnny saw himself as the good guy (or at least the okay guy), and Daniel as some upstart punk. This isn't to say Johnny's version of events is factual, merely his memory and experiences of the story. Two people can agree on all the things that happened, and still have two very different reads on things.

That's called being human.

So, Daniel now-

Daniel rejects Johnny's events outright. This is lazy, it's more of 'Daniel sees only his version of the world and nothing else' which isn't wrong, exactly. If you want this to be his flaw you can do it. That's basically always his flaw. The big road block to Johnny and Daniel working together in Season 4 and Season 5 and Season 6 is Daniel's absolutely inability to give an inch. He is, without question, always right (in his own head).

So his explanation of the events isn't giving any room that maybe, maybe Johnny's experiences are what he remembers. Or any room to see how his behavior was a part of it. It's another moment Daniel might have given a little space to Johnny.

Much like my previous post where Daniel almost accepts he failed Robby before immediately blaming Johnny for Robby being genetically bad. Which was super cool and protagonisty of him.

Either Miguel could have defended Johnny's perspective, or Daniel could just realize other people have views on the world, either one would be fine... except for the tiny bad part.

The Tiny Bad Part

So like- Daniel before Miyagi started training him was a hot headed well meaning asshole (not as bad as Johnny, but just... still bad). And Daniel admits who he was, without Miyagi, kind of sucked (when talking about the events of Karate Kid Part 3). So there's no reason for him to go so hard in defending his behavior before the tournament.

Daniel not being willing to admit he wasn't perfect before Miyagi just makes this worse. It isn't like- top ten on the bad Daniel moments in the show or anything. It's just another symptom of 'this could have been a great moment to grow his character... except he doesn't do that.'

Please no more of this in the rest of Season 6, I beg you...

There is a moment of accepting they were alike (the both loved Ali) at the end, but it was after a whole scene of Daniel just- not having any space to see outside of himself. Unable to admit he was in any way wrong in the past. Again, this isn't bad, this is clearly the flaw they want Daniel to have.

...I just wish they'd actually do something with it.
