And you wonder what sort of van Beegle Beagle drives The Great Grape Ape around on the roof (and just hope the roof has serious supports considering his purple pal's size and weight).

On the sidelines (as it were) of the late Braham Pie Day Character Convocation
[Mise en scene: Huckleberry Hound and Beegle Beagle, pretty much "peas from a pod" in a way, in conversation over pie and coffee] HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, somewhat fascinated at things of this sort: Perhaps I'd be interested in knowing how you found this Great Grape Ape of yours. BEEGLE BEAGLE, trying to be clear about it: You might say, Huck old bud, that my purple pal came about by way of a second-rate circus which suddenly went bankrupt and was unable to pay its performers after performing in some one-horse town out Kansas way. Said circus had this rather substantially-sized simian of purple colouring that (as it was explained to me) was becoming something of a headache for the circus to maintain. HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: I presume it was because of the ape's size. BEEGLE BEAGLE: How correct you are in this respect! And at any rate, being something of a small-time showman myself, I was able to procure the purple ape for literally pennies on the dollar when the circus went into a liquidation sale not long afterwards ... and for some reason, took a liking to yours truly. HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: Then what, Beegle Beagle? BEEGLE BEAGLE: Heading into the next town after acquiring my purple pal, I started to realise something of an eccentricity with that massive simian--his going crazy in the presence of purple table grapes, how such was bound to cause serious excitement in him! HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: Not to mention crowds, I take it. BEEGLE BEAGLE: Naturally, my chuckleberry friend! No wonder we have to be especially careful close to supermarkets and fruit markets; after all, purple table grapes make The Great Grape Ape go-- [Whereupon The Great Grape Ape "himself" stoops down so his face is at eye level with Huck and Beegle Beagle, somewhat bewildered at the remark] THE GREAT GRAPE APE: What exactly were you saying there? Grape Ape! Grape Ape! HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, stunned at how close he is to the giant simian's face: Awww, shucks ... I can't help but sense how fascinated he gets! THE GREAT GRAPE APE: Awwww ... Grape Ape! Grape Ape! BEEGLE BEAGLE: Still, I wonder if they still make Grapette soda, mainly to see how fast my purple pal could down a bottle of the stuff; otherwise, he prefers table grapes or grape juice. But considering how crazy the simian gets over purple grapes, I usually give him red or white such. HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: And I take it your purple pal, as you like referring unto him, prefers red grapes.... BEEGLE BEAGLE: At least it doesn't drive him too deep into excitement! THE GREAT GRAPE APE: You can say as much again ... Grape Ape! Grape Ape!

83/?? Childhood TV Shows You Should Watch
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title: The Great Grape Ape Show
Seasons: 1
Episodes: 16
Run Time: 20 Mins
Original Air Date: September 6 - December 13, 1975
Synopsis:
The title character is The Great Grape Ape, who is a 40-foot purple gorilla with the mind of a child. He travels the countryside with his canine pal Beegle Beagle, whom he calls "Beegly Beagly".
They usually ride around in a small yellow van driven by Beegle Beagle with Grape Ape sitting on the roof which can somehow support his weight.
My Rating: 7/10
My Reasoning: I definitely like this show, so for nostalgia purposes I would like to give it a higher score. However, I have to be honest that it's not that great of a show. It doesn't have a whole lot going on for it plot wise. The running gags are kind of lame compared to other shows. I feel like it's also not super memorable, at least, for most people. I remember it and I'm sure some other people do too. I just don't think the vast majority of people really remember this show.

Meanwhile, over coffee and pecan pie with real whipped cream
BEEGLE BEAGLE, boon compadre to and promoter of The Great Grape Ape: Believe you me, Magilla ... things seem to get rather fascinating whenever we step into some one-horse town as is otherwise in some sort of decline ... and for but a few hours, me and my purple pal could be considered "stars of the show," as it were!
MAGILLA GORILLA, adding his quarter's worth: Myself, I have to admit that I do live up to my name, which happens to be Yiddish for "crazy," in case you didn't know that!
BEEGLE BEAGLE: Haven't I seen you somewhere--underwater, I assume?
MAGILLA GORILLA: In case you didn't know it, I just so happen to be one with the Peter Potamus' Travelling SCUBA Par-tay, as is committed to showing the sociability and fun which diving can bring about!
BEEGLE BEAGLE, his memory now stimulated: Now I recall where I've been seeing you, and why you seem to be in dive gear every so often!
MAGILLA GORILLA: Care for some diving lessons sometime? My card ...

Great Grape Ape headcannon
Even with the Paul Bunyan legend claiming that the hoofprints of his faithful blue ox, Babe, created the Ten Thousand Lakes of Minnesota, it might be fascinating to imagine the 40-foot-tall simian wading into one such to about chest height therefor (provided the lake bottom was about 20-25 feet deep) and imagining the reactions of the summer crowd as much as Beegle Beagle, the purple simian's promoter.

This Day in Toon History
1/12/1975: Today, the TV show, The Great Grape Ape, about a 40 foot tall purple gorilla and his beagle buddy begins filming. It’s mostly about a lot of tongue twisters and hijinks. We met this guy many times… To quote character Rosie O'Lady, “if you’ve seen one 40 foot purple ape, you’ve seen them all”, so Grape Ape riding on the back of a yellow van driven Beegle Beagle ain’t an unfamiliar sight in Toontown. Many toons, even those who don’t know the show cause it’s so obscure almost compulsorily say “YEOW! It’s a gorill-ill-ill-ill-la!” Like the original actors did in the show. Just another Tuesday in Toontown. -Greasy

Toon Talk Weekly - Episode 254 - “The Great Grape Ape Show”
youtube
On episode 254 of Toon Talk Weekly, Jake and Brad relive the Saturday morning cartoon experience when they discuss the 1975 series “The Great Grape Ape Show.”
Listen to the episode above or download the MP3 (28.8 mb).
The Great Grape Ape Show was directed by Charles A. Nichols and produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1975. The series originally ran alongside Tom and Jerry and contained one season and sixteen total episodes. The series aired in syndication until 1978.
The show follows Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle as they find themselves in comedic situations all over the world. Anywhere they go, people are initially frightened by the presence of a large, 40-foot purple ape but his calm, friendly demeanor usually wins the day in the end.

Imagine Magilla Gorilla in such a pose. Or even The Great Grape Ape, with his companion Beegle Beagle off to the side.
