Blooms of October 1st
It’s October 1st and “only” 80°F, so summer should be coming to an end soon. The season’s blooms are mostly gone, but I thought I would have a look around the yard to see what was still blooming; this is one of just about everything—and some bonus fauna.
Gardenia, black-eyed Susans, Chinese forget-me-not, phlox, crape myrtle, vervain, marigold, zinnias, beefsteak plant, camphorweed (yellow) and late boneset (white), vinca, spider flower (cleome) with bonus gulf fritillary butterfly, brown-eyed Susans, “volunteer” yellow cherry tomato plant.
And bonus full-sized (red-shouldered, probably) hawk, ~20 feet in the air in a pecan tree, from ~50 ft away through the screen of my bathroom window, max digital zoom. Terrible photo, fun visitor! (This hawk is 3x to 4x the size of the hawk I posted yesterday!)

Very proud of myself. I got all of my gardening goals met for my days off this week.
I cleaned up a bunch of the mess that was piled up all over. I found ot all homes, or I got rid of it.
I spray painted almost all of those random planters black, so it's looking a bit neater where the plants are grouped together.
I planted 3 different lemon grass pots, 12 Marigolds (some in-ground, some container) for companions to the three different types of tomatoes that I got planted in the first raised bed.
I planted, Black Krim, Beefsteak, and Brandywine varieties of toms next to those Marigolds.
I also got my dill, oregano, and cherry toms potted in more permanent containers.
I had a bunch of flowers grown from seed, but I put them outside too soon and they died. I learned from them to expose my baby plants more slowly to the garden.
Anyway, I have been picking up some flowers sporadically over the last 3 weeks from nurseries and home improvement stores.
Portulaca, pansies, blue cone flowers, Marigolds, and not pictured I also potted up primroses, snapdragons, 2 artichoke plants, wild flowers from seed, and a pretty purple bell plant.
Stage 2 will be getting the peppers (mixed, Sweet, Serrano, Hot) into their larger and more permanent containers.
Also, getting the cucumbers planted into the second raised bed.
Anyway. I worked hard today, and I'm so happy right now! Can't wait until it all becomes more full and mature.

Oh yeah just because I feel like rambling
If my garden plans work out as intended it's gonna be absolutely banging this year. The only thing that could stop me is my bad watering memory skills, my bad weeding skills, and my tendency to step on things on accident.
But even with just the vegetables and fruits the plan is
Tomatoes. Hoo buddy the tomatoes. Last year I had 12 tomatoes (6 romas and 6 beefsteaks) but the 6 cells I picked up had extras in them, which means if I separate them well enough I can get 7 beefsteaks and 14 roma tomato plants. I'm gonna have to find space. But goddammit I will find space.
Peppers. Just sweet banana peppers this time for now (bellpeppers grow too slow for too little reward imo) but I picked up a 6 cell of those. I've also still got some plants that hung on for the entirety of winter (Florida for the win) so whether or not those stay where they're at is. A Decision I'll have to make tomorrow.
I've already planted carrots and peas that are starting to come up, but I might plant more because I didn't get as many as I was hoping for by the tomato cages. I also planted lettuce seeds, cabbage seeds, and green onion seeds that I've seen not much results from so if those pop up they pop up but otherwise I think its a bit late to plant more? I'll recheck the extensions site.
I'm gonna try growing watermelon again!!! I got 3 bags of compost and at least one and a half of those bags is gonna be dedicated to making a nice mound to plant seeds in. The year we used fresh compost was the year they grew best, but trying to reuse the same mound in later years yielded not much in the span of results. Time for new compost on a new mound.
I'm gonna try growing zucchini and squash again this year! Some in my bins (might need a soil refresh, hence more compost) and some in the ground (we'll see how it goes). Hopefully if I start them now instead of waiting till April (I did NOT know I could plant them as early as late Feb until like 3 weeks ago in my area) then they'll get to a decent size before the snails and slugs get voracious. If not. We'll see what happens.
I might try growing cucumbers but idk man.
All this on top of my plans for growing swamp milkweed, purple coneflowers, rudbeckia, and more. I also still have rights over the front yard landscaping, so I'm responsible for finding more butterfly weed and liatris plants at the plant sales in April (the ones I planted in October are either still dormant or dead. Out of the 5 liatris I planted then I only see signs of 1 coming back, and none of the butterfly weeds. Fingers crossed though.)
All this to say. I'm excited! Fingers crossed, everyone!

garden update // july 23, 2024
good thing i got photos this morning, 'cuz its a thunderstorm now.
have had a lot of new visitors in the garden lately. unsure if the end of the drought brought them in, or if like it's hatching season?? idk anything about insects except we need more. so it's nice to see more. definitely seeing more variety of moths and butterflies and wasps this year than in past years, so that's good.
i know i posted about the baby pumpkin earlier, but like... it's crazy how big the plant itself is, and so far, only one has popped up. debating now if i let all the pumpkins keep going, or just rip up the other 3 plants since they haven't had even one female flower yet... legit dunno what to do about it yet.
the tomatillos... yeeesss the tomatillos are CHOPPED AND OUTTA HERE!! MWAHAHAhaha... well, the plants are. i still got about 4lbs to process for seeds. then i'll be done for good. so this week, my plan is to prep these barrel pots for the swiss chard i already started from seed. my farmer momma (not my biological one, but the one who has taught me a TON about farming for produce) suggested that i start the rainbow swiss chard in paper towels because even the roots show the color. never grown or eaten them before, so this is fun!! i'm gonna be a branding butthead and only grow yellow and white varieties for seed, but sell all the colors as transplants at the market. the 6-packs have always been popular at the markets, so im gonna have a 6-pack with all colors. starting seeds this way means i can put certain colors in certain cells. will post a photo later when they've grown to show.
more babies. cantelope on the left, beefsteak bush on the right. both growing for the seeds. got about 15ish cantelope babies so far... hope all my neighbors like cantelope!! only 2 beegsteak so far, hope more pop up soon.
